Papua New Guinea
Renewing the Tok Pisin Bible In response to requests from church leaders, this project is revising the popular Tok Pisin Bible translation for the people of Papua New Guinea, creating a more readable version more widely accessible, especially for the younger generation. Pioneer Bible Translators and SIL PNG have partnered with Bible Society, offering workplaces for translators, along with translators and translator consultant assistance. Initial portions of the revised text have already been used by churches for preaching and Sunday school.

Literacy for Life Bible Society is partnering with Mission Educate, running a Bible-based literacy project teaching people basic literacy, numeracy and life skills. The impact of this project is seen in the number of students who learn to read and write, gain improved life skills, understanding and engagement with the Bible and involvement in the activities of their churches.

Light Through Literacy Since 2014, thousands of non-literate Pakistani women each year have attended Bible-based literacy classes established by Bible Society Pakistan and run in partnership with churches around the country. Bible Society believe that if a woman is taught to read and write, she becomes a ‘beacon of light’ to her community with the word of God. Women who graduate develop confidence and self-respect, increase their income, can read the Bible and grow stronger in their Christian faith, as well as participate in church activities.

Trauma Healing for War and Earthquake Survivors Bible Society Syria is supporting parents, children, and others, aiming to lessen their suffering from the effects of war through trauma healing. Together in partnership with churches, schools, Christian ministries, and specialists in psychological assessment and care, Bible Society Syria runs trauma healing training, family support programs, and trauma healing support in a prison.

Support for Christians Bible Society Australia supports the Arab Israeli Bible Society (AIBS) to sustain its vital community work. The AIBS provides Bibles, resources, and fosters Bible engagement among families and communities. They also organise workshops addressing topics like 'Pain and Suffering,' women and family issues, school and youth programs, and creative evangelism during holidays like Easter, Christmas, and Mother's Day.

Bibles for the Young Bible Society Australia is partnering with Bible Society Kenya in providing Bibles to underprivileged school children. In collaboration with other Kenyan Christian groups and funded by various Bible Societies, this project is transforming children's lives by helping them excel in school and offering hope to both the children and their families through God's word.

God’s Word for Kids with Cancer The Bible Society of Nicaragua (BSN) offers continuous spiritual and practical aid to families with children undergoing cancer treatment in hospital. This includes providing Bibles and Scripture resources, training volunteers and medical staff, arranging prayer sessions, offering support with transportation, medication, nutrition, and even providing coffins when necessary.

Pitjantjatjara Old Testament Translation Project
In 2002, the Pitjantjatjara Shorter Bible (New Testament + 15% of the Old Testament) was published. Years later, in 2011, the Pitjantjatjara Old Testament Translation Project was initiated. In 2018, a multivoice audio recording of the New Testament was made and published online. And finally by 2023

First draft translations of 2 Samuel, Ezra, 1 Chronicles, and Proverbs are done, with Leviticus in the second draft, and final drafts of Zephaniah and Job.

Work commenced on first drafts of Exodus, Nehemiah, Lamentations, Hosea, 1 Kings, 2 Chronicles, Obadiah, Nahum, Amos and Ecclesiastes.

Three translation consultant workshops were held in August-September (Judges), December (Haggai and several Psalms), and March (17 more Psalms, almost completing Psalms 1-41).

Pitjantjatjara Bible Engagement Resources
The Pitjantjatjara translators are creating resources for their communities. Pitjantjatjara Ilustrated Children's Bible In collaboration with Iwiri Corporation and Emmaus Christian College, this project aims to create a Bible with 50 Pitjantjatjara-style paintings illustrating Bible stories. Currently, 48 paintings are done, awaiting professional photography, with 2 more in progress.
“Nami [a key Pitjantjatjara Translator] told people how she’d always had this dream of having a Children’s Bible with the stories told through paintings.” — Neil Blenkinsop, 61-year-old high school teacher from Emmaus Christian College, who rode his bike 1,400km to raise $30,000 dollars, to help finish the Pitjantjatjara Children’s Illustrated Bible project
Pitjantjatjara Devotional Prayer Book This one-year daily devotional, featuring a Scripture reading and a daily Pitjantjatjara prayer, is nearly complete in the first draft, with only 14 more prayers to be written.
“While working on prayers for the Pitjantjatjara Prayer Book one of the translators had been having a few quite stressful days, with difficult family relations and a sick relative. She said after working on the prayers that she was greatly strengthened. ‘These prayers have lifted me up,’ she said. This book seems to be a source of great encouragement and hope every time translators work on it.” — David Barnett, Translator and Bible Engagement Coordinator

The Noongar Bible Translation Project
The Noongar Bible Translation Project is helping to revitalise the Noongar language and culture through Bible translation. Bible Society Australia is supporting this initiative by providing Translation Consultancy support and coordination. •
Translation work continued on the Book of Matthew (chapters 1-4 and 7-8 were drafted, and chapters 5, 10, and 13 progressed).

Two children's Bible Storybooks, Jesus is Born and Jesus and the Big Storm, were translated by a Bunbury-based team of translators.

Jesus is Born was published and distributed in Noongar along with a Noongar translation of John 1:14 for a Christmas poster.

Training First Nations Bible Translators
BSA supports First Nations Bible translator training in partnership with Nungalinya Bible College in Darwin. •
The Certificate II Course in Bible Translation, approved as a government-accredited course in August 2022, was designed for a younger generation of translators without the same entry requirements as the Diploma level course.

In 2023, two language groups (Murrinhpatha and Yolngu Matha) began the course, completing their first intensives.
Additionally, BSA partnered with the Aboriginal Evangelical Fellowship (AEF), providing funding for their First Nations Ministers Training, including the Discipleship 1 Course for 10 students from Balgo, Western Australia, in September 2022. Indigenous Audio Bibles Bible Society Australia is working to produce audio Scriptures which provide the gospel in a format communities can readily access. In early 2023, the 1,000 audio players in stock were all distributed, and a new order for 1,000 placed to meet community needs. Pre-orders have already been received from hospital chaplains and church communities in various languages.

BSA supports chaplains in the Australian Defence Forces (ADF), providing camouflage Scriptures, ADF specialty books, and gospel materials through our annual Scripture Grant. BSA Publishing In the past year, BSA developed and published new and targeted resources to help people engage with God’s word.
‘Peace, Strength, Unity and Hope’ minibooks of Scripture were reprinted, and 2,500 have already been distributed to hospital chaplains, in response to their requests. The New Beginnings Bible was reprinted in the last financial year, due its popularity with churches in Australia, the South Pacific and Asia. Copies were distributed at a heavily subsidised price to allow for gifting to new Christians.

In both our international and national mission work, collaboration and partnerships are integral to fulfilling BSA’s mission. BSA is a part of the United Bible Societies (UBS) fellowship, and partners with Bible Societies worldwide, as well as other Christian mission organisations. Each year this group has met regularly for prayer and collaboration in the region, including annual gatherings such as the South Pacific Bible forum held in October 2022.
