The Big Kahuna Derek Rabelo’s father prayed his unborn son would become a famous Brazilian surfer. But those dreams seemed dashed when Derek was born blind. Despite the odds, Derek embarked on a three-year journey of rigorous training that stretched him mentally, physically and spiritually. He not only learned to surf without sight, but he has even surfed Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, a surf reef break in Hawaii notorious for huge waves that break in shallow water. “Pipeline is basically the ultimate wave in a lot of ways — just a short, intense, dangerous wave that’s close to the beach,” said Kelly Slater, an 11-time World Champion surfer. “Many surfers with sight do not venture out even after they see that others can do it. With no eye sight, you’re literally in the moment of what the feel is right at that second, and that is all Derek had as he surfed Pipeline.” Derek credits his success to his faith in God and strong Christian values. The new film Beyond Sight captures Derek’s unique surfing ability and his passion for life that inspires both surfers and non-surfers alike. The film’s producer Bryan Jennings also founded ‘Walking on Water’, a non-profit ministry dedicated to sharing the gospel with the global surfing community. Well-known for its surf films, including Soul Surfer, ‘Walking on Water’ has been running Surf Camps for kids since 1995. Derek Rabelo will be catching waves and sharing his story this month in Manly, Wollongong, Avoca, Newcastle, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast. His trip will include Surfest Newcastle, NSW (from February 16th), the opening leg of the ASP World Champion Tour in Coolangatta, Queensland (from February 27th) and a special film screening at Avoca Beach Theatre. To mark Derek’s visit to Australia, Bible Society Australia and Heritage Films are offering a special package deal: Purchase the new Beyond Sight DVD for $24.95 and we’ll throw in the NLT Surfer’s New Testament for only $3 extra (RRP $7.95). We’re also dropping the price on the NLT Surfer’s Bible down to $20 (RRP $30).

down. It challenges all of our values”, says Tim. Foster’s critique of a “punitive” gospel might be challenging for some Christians, who might be focused on keeping the gospel “clear”. In an early chapter of Suburban Captivity he gives case studies of people ranging from “Kate” a heritage architect in the inner city to “Suzie” who lives on a housing estate and encourages us to think how we can engage in their “cultural narratives”. Or to put it in Christian-speak, “how the gospel can enter their lives”. He is saying that we need to understand them so that they can understand us. The gospel is much more holistic than a simple salvation equation. Tim says, “the gospel is about God realising his purposes for the creation. I am no longer at the centre, but God is, because it’s the recovery of his purposes. “The gospel is still about salvation, but it’s no longer primarily driven by the question of my personal salvation from judgement. Conversion becomes about getting on board with God’s purposes. It’s no longer an abstract conversation about me being under God’s wrath and facing judgement at the end time. Rather when we look at recovering God’s purposes for the world, we actually need to look at how those purposes are being realised, how they are being undermined and how they can be redeemed in a given culture”. This is contextualisation, and as Foster says in his book: The power of the gospel is felt when it is brought into meaningful engagement with the narrative of a culture. God has given us a job to do, and it is more than simply repeating the supposedly timeless words of well-worn tracts. We must better understand both the gospel and the culture we are seeking to reach, using our creativity and imagination to bring them into dynamic conversation (p. 137).

The Surburban Captivity of the Church
When Tim Foster made the 15km move from a suburban parish to an urban one, he didn’t anticipate just how much his understanding of the gospel would be challenged. Now the Director of Theological Education and Formation at Ridley College in Melbourne, he has penned his reflections in his new book, The Suburban Captivity of the Church. Aside from all the cultural differences, Tim says he was struck “by how hostile people were to evangelical Christianity and yet how many of their values were familiar to me from the Bible. There was a real concern for the marginalised, for social justice, for the environment, a real desire for community”. Observing this forced Tim to reflect on the way he had understood the gospel: “The gospel as I had come to understand it, aligned itself very strongly with suburban values”. Tim says that the gospel has been so contextualised to the suburban context that the two are inextricably linked. “Suburban people are fundamentally aspirational; what drives them is moving towards a settled, secure and safe existence. The suburban gospel suits this because it gives you eternal security,” Tim says. According to Tim, this vision is missing a critical element of the gospel: the critique of strongly held values. “It seemed to me that our gospel and church was being held captive to suburban context and values. “In reducing the gospel to becoming a ticket to heaven, evangelicals have developed a very under-realised view of the Christian life – so it’s all about what happens after I die, it doesn’t shape how I live. In Jesus’ life, death and resurrection a new order has come. There’s a new way to be human, a new way to be community, and this new order turns the world upside

If you’ve ever struggled with prolonged periods of severe illness or injury—or if someone you love has—you may well have been tempted by those Christian pastors who insist that complete physical and emotional healing is just a prayer (or a few dollars) away. Scott Blackwell has a different vision, a vision he finds in the pages of the Bible. For Blackwell, this is a deeply personal issue. The book begins with an account of Blackwell’s early life and young adulthood, during which he began to deal with the ongoing effects of childhood meningitis. The first half of the book is a strident rebuttal of ministries that Blackwell argues have elevated healing above the place given to it in the biblical witness, a critique developed further throughout the rest of the book. God never promises the Christian life won’t be hard: “The simple and ever-present fact is this: life is hard”. If this is the case, as the Bible says it is, then the promises of preachers who claim to have the spiritual insight or technique to eradicate all hardship in the present are clearly mistaken. The healing miracles Jesus performs point forward to the nature of the kingdom he is inaugurating, while his death and resurrection achieve the reconciliation of God’s whole creation to himself. The goal of God’s saving work in Christ is the healing of the whole cosmos, including human suffering. This healing has begun in Jesus; but we await its completion upon his return.
This picture of future wholeness, Blackwell argues, is the powerful knowledge we need to persevere through the hardships of life while we await Christ’s return. The concluding chapters reiterate the beauty of God’s promise: you will be healed. The book ends with an impassioned plea to recognize all that God has done for us in Christ, and to cling to that knowledge through trials. Perhaps the most important insight of the book is that knowing the future God has promised in Christ, knowing his love for us, and knowing his power to heal—even in the present, should he choose to do so—can, in fact, sometimes lead to deep disappointment. Sometimes, “[we] experience disappointment because we do believe”. The author’s own story, scattered throughout the book, provides a powerful picture of what it looks like to deal with such disappointment over the course of a life. A strong case is made for the importance of the communal life of the church in the healing process. The concluding chapter paints a picture of what a Christian community that cares for each member looks like, though it would be good to dwell on the practicalities of this at greater length. This book will be a helpful resource for those enduring suffering and for those seeking to endure it with them as together we await the healing to come when the Lord Jesus returns.
Before Amen by Max Lucado Paperback 9780718016371 $14.95 Reviewed by Janine Lawlor
When Jesus’s disciples requested a lesson on prayer, Jesus responded by giving them the Lord’s Prayer. Max Lucado confesses to being a recovering prayer wimp. To help he wrote a short new prayer he calls the “Pocket Prayer”. The pocket prayer is just six little lines - short and sweet: “Father, you are good. I need help. They need help. Thank you. In Jesus’ name, amen.” In Before Amen, Lucado expands each line into easy to read short but very sweet and tasty chapters. My favourite chapter was titled “Oh Daddy”.
Max encourages us to approach the Father in prayer like a child and have a heartfelt conversation: “If prayer depends on how I pray, I’m sunk. But if the power of prayer depends on the One who hears the prayer, and if the One who hears my prayer is my Daddy, then I have hope.” Max writes with the same humour and life examples that engage the reader. If you are looking for a fresh understanding of prayer and wish to draw nearer to our Daddy God then Before Amen is a recommended read.

$17.95 Reviewed by Steve Kryger My boss had previously expressed zero interest in Christianity. He was like many Australians - highly educated, intelligent, sheltered from tragedy and lacking little his heart desired. But he was rattled by one question he couldn’t answer: “What happens when you die?” This was the question posed to him by his 5 year old son after an unexpected death, and was perhaps the first question in his son’s life that he had no answer for. I was thrilled then, when he then told me that he was going to send his son to Sunday School to explore these questions that his worldview struggled to answer. As I write this, I have a 2-yearold son and a daughter, God willing, joining us in 3 months time. So far, the toughest question I have been asked by my son is if he can have more cake. But as you may already be experiencing, the broken world that we live in prompts children (not to mention adults) to ask difficult questions. “Why do people die?” “Why do people get divorced?” “Why do people fight and kill” “Why does God let natural disasters happen” Helping parents work through these difficult questions with their children is the purpose of a new book called ‘Answering Your Kids’ Toughest Questions’. Written by mother/daughter team Elyse Fitzpatrick and Jessica Thompson, this book explores the questions above and more, as well as how to speak with your children about the problem (sin), and the solution (the gospel). Speaking about the reality and nature of sin may not come easily. But I was encouraged as they shared why an understanding of sin is so important: “May we possess a strong doctrine of sin so that we can hold to the doctrines of grace with passion, just as the woman held the feet of her Savior, weeping, kissing, and rejoicing.” This is what we want for our children, isn’t it? What I found unique and particularly helpful about this book is the customised responses for different aged children. Different stages of maturity allow for more complex explanations, and so the authors provide an answer for preschoolers, children aged 5-10, and children aged 11 and up. They are careful to emphasise that this book isn’t a script - but as a conversation starter and helper, this book is a great resource.
