What BICSc training is required for a cleaning operative to be safe and competent cleaning in a COVID-19 environment?
The expectation of the industry is higher than ever, with social distancing and business-restrictive measures in place, along with public concern around interaction (even at a distance) with others means there is an increased level of pressure. Commercial cleaning companies must provide the highest levels of cleaning services to maintain the confidence of the customer. This document provides the outline of the training and accreditation that a COVID-19 safe cleaning operative should hold. All cleaning operations will differ depending upon the facility or building being cleaned and, as such, we cannot cover every combination or requirement. The Cleaning Professional’s Skills Suite covers all of the skills that we can provide accredited training in. WE RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING SKILLS ARE TRAINED AS A MINIMUM: • Licence to Practice (LTP) • Base Units • • • • • • • •
BU1 – Dust control mop sweeping BU2 – Damp mopping BU3 – Vacuum cleaning BU5 – Emptying and cleaning waste bins BU6 – Damp wiping surfaces BU9 – Scrubber drying BU10 – Glass cleaning BU12 – Cleaning toilet facilities

• Additional Units • AU3 – Machine scrubber drying (with a wet suction machine) • AU5 – Washing surfaces • Specialist Units • SU2 – Bio-hazard decontamination cleaning (hard surfaces)
BU6 – Damp wiping surfaces
BU10 – Glass cleaning
This list of skills provides an all-round solution for a well-trained cleaning operative including how to deal with a bio-hazard outbreak on hard surfaces. As mentioned above this does not take into account all buildings or facilities.

IF THERE HAS BEEN NO OUTBREAK THE USUAL STANDARDS OF CLEANING ACHIEVED BY: • • • •
BU1 – Dust control mop sweeping BU2 – Damp mopping BU3 – Vacuum cleaning BU5 – Emptying and cleaning waste bins
• BU6 – Damp wiping surfaces • BU10 – Glass cleaning • BU12 – Cleaning toilet facilities
BU1 – Dust control mop sweeping
BU6 – Damp wiping surfaces
Should be sufficient to continue with, during this period. However, we highly recommend that, on top of the additional precautions to protect everyone, the touch point and sanitary cleaning frequencies are heavily increased to minimise the spread of the virus. SHOULD A CUSTOMER REQUEST A DEEP CLEAN THEN THE FOLLOWING SKILL CHANGES WOULD BE REQUIRED:
• BU6 – Damp wiping surfaces is replaced with AU5 – Washing surfaces • BU2 – Damp mopping is replaced with AU3 – Machine scrubber drying (with a wet suction machine) or BU9 – scrubber drying • SU5 – Carpet skimming is replaced with SU6 – Carpet extraction cleaning And so on… A deep clean is a periodic clean that addresses each surface with a more intensive clean than the usual daily clean.
AU5 – Washing surfaces
BU9 – Scrubber drying

IN THE EVENT OF AN OUTBREAK It is a BICSc recommendation that, in order to protect the operative, where possible a building is left for 3 days following an outbreak. Where this is not possible or after the 3-day wait the process discussed in the Control of Cross-Contamination Course should be followed. IN SUMMARY:
