Golf is a very popular sport for all society groups, and golf courses have become a main attraction for tourists all around the World. Here in Thailand, we have many golf courses all around the country, such as in Bangkok, Hua hin, Phuket and Koh Samui. On Koh Samui, we have one of the most famous golf courses that being Santiburi Samui Country Club, that has been host to many international golf tournaments. One main competition; “The Asian Tournament” was held on June 5-8th 2008 We had the opportunity to interview Mr. Jakapong Thongyai Marketing Director of the golf course, about “ The Asian tournament” that was on this June.
Q: Good Afternoon, Mr. Jakapong and thank you for your time if you could tell us a little bit about this golf course. A: Santiburi Group has a long history about managing golf courses , the first golf course from the group is located in Chaeing Rai constructed ten years ago. Mr. Santi Pirompakdee, the owner’s vision was that Koh Samui has outstanding views being a main tourist attraction area in Thailand. It is for this reason that the Santiburi golf course is now located here and has held many international golf tournaments. This is the 4th year that we held the “Bangkok Airways Open” event. “I have myself had the opportunity to play in many famous golf courses all around America and I can assure you that Santiburi Golf Course is on the same level as them. The Golf course itself has stunning views and challenging terrains for golfers to show their expertise playing in this field. Q: With the tournament having just taken place, I would like to know how the event was organized.

A: The event has been held annually and the main sponsor of the event is Bangkok Airways. They send the golf officials to inspect many courses for qualification to hold the event and they have chosen Santiburi Golf Course to hold the event 4 year in a row. Q: In this tournament, how many professional golfers from around the World participated?
A: This is the Asian Tournament; there were more than 50 golfers that participated, not only Asian golfers but also the Europeans and Americans. This tournament is a main attraction for all the golfers around the World. Q: How does the Santiburi Golf Course promote the event? 14 THAILAND ESTATES PROPERTY LISTINGS I www.ThailandEstates.com
I ARTICLE A: It is the co-operation between Santiburi Samui Country Club, Bangkok Airways and Asian organizations to promote the event by press conferences both domestic and abroad and also web-site promotion also by the regular tournament schedule. Q: Beside the professional golfers that participate in tournament, do you think the event has attracted more tourists to come to Koh Samui?
A : Of course he said, Not only the golfers that will come to Island also will be their family members , organizers including spectators.
Q: What is your opinion about Koh Samui tourism at present? A: Samui has been developed a lot since I have arrived been over 25 years ago. There were no 5 star hotels, not even 2 star hotels at that time and everything was just only nature. Now Koh Samui has everything you can ask for including 5 star hotels , full infrastructure, Shopping Malls, however not all areas on Koh Samui have been developed. Part of it is still untouched which is also the reason that attracts a lot of tourists to Koh Samui. Q: Do you think that Koh Samui has been developed gradually affecting the golf course business? A: More tourists have come to Koh Samui because Samui is a paradise Island with unspoiled beaches with many activities on offer. Golf Courses are one of the facilities that have affected tourism in a positive way. While on vacation on the paradise Island they can also have sport activities to complete their vacation. Q: What is the marketing plan for Santiburi golf course to be known by tourists in the future?
A: In the past, our marketing strategy has not focused on promoting the golf course that much. We use word of mouth from our existing clients promoting the Golf course to the World. In the future, I think we will focus more on promoting our golf course with tourism. Q: Now there are many developments built around the golf course, we would like to know that in the future Santiburi Group plans to invest in the property business? A: At this moment, nothing has been planned yet, however in the future we might look into it because we have seen many of the international golf courses offer the completed property package. I think this will improve the image of Koh Samui and promote the tourism industry. Q: Would you like to give advise how to be make Koh Samui better for tourism industry?
A: I would like to promote the good driving behavior and also we should promote Koh Samui more, co-operation of government with private business , and more events to attract tourists to come to our paradise Island. Authority gains valued support�
With ever increasing tourist numbers, safety is a main concern for the local authorities. Now with new procedures in place, there are more police check points with more police officers around Koh Samui, ensuring the safety of locals and tourists alike. Koh Samui Chief of Police, Major-General Dhammanoon Tritippayapong asked for the support of private businesses on the island to sponsor the construction of more police check points around the Island. Increased Arrivals a Boon to Samui Property Values! Koh Samui is rapidly catching up with Phuket in terms of accessibility by air which has resulted in increased interest and an upsurge in property investment on this beautiful and idyllic tropical island paradise. Bangkok Airways last year invested in a complete overhaul and upgrade of the Koh Samui Airport, bringing it into the 21st century. The new airport however has still retained its cozy tropical uniqueness while adding amenities for passengers including a walking street shopping mall, with the likes of Jim Thomson and Whittards of Chelsea as anchor tenants. Bangkok Airways is positioning Samui to be Thailand’s second international air base by adding several mid-haul international direct routes from Samui to; Dubai, Shanghai, KL and Bali with other destinations to follow. Hong Kong and Singapore are currently well serviced by Bangkok Airways and collectively represent the two primary markets for Samui properties. Also of interest is the arrival of Silk Air, which is planning to add regularly scheduled flights between Samui and Singapore. Additionally, Samui’s arrival numbers are set to increase by over 20% as a result of the allowance of larger aircraft landing here with greater passenger capacity, representing a 60% increase. Thai Airways have also contributed to increases in Samui arrivals by adding a twice daily SamuiBangkok flight service to its regular route schedule. These additional flights are expected to provide an additional 10,000+ visitors to Samui per
month, significantly raising the monthly average passenger numbers by 20-25%. The improved air services will be a key factor in supporting the growth of Samui´s property market as there is a direct correlation between a resort destinations arrival numbers and its property values (refer to graphs). Pool experts agree that the success of a pool project rests not with the salesman, sales brochure, or style you choose, but with the pool construction company you hire. Determine the main activity of your pool. A dive pool will be a different design than one for family fun. If children will be enjoying the pool, don’t hide it behind shrubbery. For safety’s sake, you’ll want to make sure the entire pool can be easily seen from your house.
Pick out a spot in a sunny part of your yard for the location. Avoid trees that will not only block the sun but drop leaves. Plan for easy access to your home for dressing and entertaining. Determine where the filter system and any pool supplies should be stored. On the practical side, locate your pool away from low spots that could flood. High water tables will require special accommodations. Know where the lines for water, sewer, gas, and electric are located on your property. Flag any underground phone and electric lines before excavation begins. Finally, never locate a pool underneath overhead lines or over underground sewer lines and pipes.
Selecting a Pool Style There are three types of in ground pools: fiberglass, vinyl, and concrete. Each needs a pump, filter, drains, returns, plastic piping, and chemical feeder. Fiberglass pools are noted for their relatively quick installation, non-abrasive finish that resists staining, and inert composition that inhibits algae formation. Fiberglass pools are manufactured in a variety of shapes. The one you choose will arrive preformed in one piece. Because it is delivered to your site and needs to be dropped into place with a crane, access must be available. Once the pool is in place and leveled, heating, filtration, and other systems are set up. The crew then backfills the site and fills the pool with water. If you choose fiberglass, you’ll want to compare the materials used, production methods, and warranties. Ask the company you are considering whether its crew is factory trained. Vinyl-lined pools, known for their smooth, stainresistant surface, usually come as packages. Design options may be limited, but they are typically less expensive than fiberglass and cement pools. Depending on the soil composition, once the excavation is complete, a wall system is constructed of wood, poured concrete, steel, or polymer. Ask pool companies how the wall materials will impact your pool’s longevity. Bottom material might be of packed sand that is free of stones or poured concrete. Once the vinyl liner is installed and systems are set up, the site is backfilled and the pool is filled. Liners may have to be replaced about every 10 years, depending on usage and location.

A concrete pool is the most popular choice for in ground pools. Cement pools take several weeks to set up, but the design possibilities are endless. In fact, these works of art are created on site. After a site is excavated and forms are set, gunite, or dry gunned concrete, is spray applied. Through pneumatic pressure, cement and sand blown through a hose are mixed with water at the nozzle. Since the operator controls the mix, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s critical that he or she be well trained. A crew follows behind as it is sprayed to shape it and smooth it to the desired form. The concrete must be worked within about 30 minutes. Stairs and swim-ins are shaped freehand. The cost of a concrete pool will vary depending on region, landscaping, and design. A concrete pool requires an interior surface finish which, with the various colors and textures to choose from, is limited only by your imagination. In June we attended the “Smart International Property Expo” at the Hong Kong Convention Centre. There were a higher number of exhibitors than last year and we found a great interest in Koh Samui.
With this exhibition we were able to educate the residents of London into the benefits and lifestyle, of investing in South East Asia’s pearl in the gulf; Koh Samui.
It was a great achievement to make it to Singapore as the monsoonal weather conditions forced us to rearrange all our travel arrangements at the very last minute!
Due to the success of this exhibition Thailand Estates Corporation is proud to announce that we will be participating in many more exhibitions in the future, especially in Europe, due to the High demand for competitive overseas investment opportunities.
