I am particularly happy to welcome the folk dancers and musicians who are taking part in the Billingham International Folklore Festival, the aims of which are to enable the residents of the town and elsewhere on Teeside to meet people from other towns and countries and to enjoy their folk music, singing and dancing. The Teeside Royal Scottish Country Dance Society, the Stockton English Folk Dance Society and the St. Leonard's Irish Folk Dance Society arewellknown, having danced on anumber of occasions in the Town Square. To them I extend a wailn welcome on their returtr. "Ensemble Csardas" from the University of Godollo, Hungary, "Kassari" Estonians domiciled in Sweden, "Orlyk" Ukrainians now living in Manchester, the McPeake Family from Belfast, the Eisenstadt Folk Dance and Song Group from Austria, the Juniper Green Dancers from Edinburgh and the Monkseaton Morris Men are all making their first visit to Billingham and to thern I express a warrn welcome and good wishes for an enjoyable stay'

The Council, on behalf of the residents of Billingham, are grateful to all the dancers and musicians who will be the guests of the town, and in return I hope they will have the pleasure of dancing and singing to large audiences.

In the past two years the Council have sponsored and encouraged folk dancing and other activities in the Town Centre at weekends and this International Folklore Festival is not ouly an extension of these activities but is a practical illustration of how the Urban District Council plans for people their leisure and er{oyment, and I hope that the people of the town will generously support the Festival.

will be an opportunity for dancers and musicians to see something of the town and the surrounding countryside and to take part in some of the other activities during the Festival There

Week.

Stoclgon Group of the English Folft Dance and Song Societg

ENGLANDStockton Group of the English Folk Dance and Song Society. This group was formed about ten years ago and has become one of the leading English Folk Dance Groups in the country. They have in their repertoire a wide range of Morris, Country, and Sword Dances.

The Sword Dances maintain an ancient North-East tradition, surviving amongst the coal miners and workers in iron, they are closely linked with Mummimg Plays. In this folk custom the "Sword" is a dance property rather than a weapon of offence. The Northumbrian Sword Dance is called a "Rapper". The Stockton Sword Dancers are known as the "Blue and Golds" Rapper team.

Music is provided by the "Waggoners", made up of an accordion, base guitar and two fiddles. The group has represented England at International Festivals in Ireland, Yugoslavia, Italy, Germany and Holland.
