Good behaviour, however, depends on how well you understood your hair's potential and its problems. Most women who complain they 'can't do a thing with it' are giving it the wrong treatment. Foreword

IITelcome to the second Billingham International Folklore Festival.

-

Our first Festival, last year, was a great success, and gave pleasure to all who attended or took part in it. This year we have six groups coming from abroad and they will be ioined by several from this country. I hope that everyone in Billingham will come to at least one of the concerts listed in this programme. They offer colour, movement, music and singing, and will appeal to young and old alike.

The performers are travelling long distances to entertain us, and will be living in Billingham throughout the Festival Veek. Let us all show that they are really welcome in our town, not only at 6e concerts, but also as they move amongst us. Here is a real chance to improve international relations. The Council has arrarysd the Festival for your enjoyment. hands. Your wholehearted suppoft will give it the success it deserves.

Folklore Group "Trachtenverein" from Landreck in the Austrian Tyrol

rrir.rrarlrt!!!arra!rtir!trrtrrrtrrrrrrrrr

The folklore group .(Trachtenverein" comes from Landeck near Innsbruck, in the heart of the Tyrol. Their costume, dances and music are very different from the Austrian group which appe-ared at this festival last year.

Traditional Tyrolese dress will be worn. This costume is still worn to-day at festivals and on special ,occasions. The girls wear blue skirts, aprons and red silk neckclottri. lftre men leather shorts, braces and a belt on which is embroidEred the coat of arms of the town. All have white stockings.

The Group's special type of dances are the "schuplatter" which originated in the Austrian Alps and are the traditional heritage of the Tyrol. They are danced only by boys and are a unique expression of youthful vigour and "Joie de vivre." The folk

songs are mostly performed by the girls and there will be solos, duets and items by group. Alpine yodelling will also be a feature of their repertoire.

"Trachtenverein" was re-formed after the last war and aims at preserving Tyrolese traditions and passing them on to the young people of the region. They a.. *id.ly traielled and have performed at most of the great European Folklore Festivals. 22

CANARY ISLANDS

Folklore Group "Roque Nublo" from Las Palmas in the Canary Islands

The folklore group "Roque Nublo" comes from Las Palmas which has become one of the great holiday and cruise centres for Europeans seeking to miss the rigours of their winter climate.

Most visitors to this town rvill see this group which performs at one of the most popular cafes. They are not full time professionals; cab drivers, cobblers, joiners-they do their work during the day and entertain at night.

Their entertainment is the traditional folklore of their islands performed in the national dress. This . is a most beautiful and interesting costurr^, which will add a great deal of colour to our festival. "Roque Nublo" have toured in Europc in previous years and were a sensational success in France during a visit to 5 Festivals in 1963. They have been engaged for a week's cabaret while in the North East of England and after their visit here they go to Dijon in Burgundy to another International Festival. Canary lslanders Dancing

Ciamada Nissarda" is the official folklore society of Nice, capital of the French Riviera. It was founded in L925 with the aim of preserving the traditional dances and songs of the region this at a time when folklore was not generally popular. Now the society is strong and well known throughout France and Europe. In the last two years they have performed in 7 different countries.

The music is provided by the traditional instruments of the Nice country-fife and tabour to which have been added the accordion, flute, big drum and "pignata." Costume is.most coloarful and attractive. Men wear a red woollen hat edged with black velvet, a white linen*s'hirt and red collar. Trousers are of white linen and held in place with a red woolien sash. The women wear the costume of a Nice flower seller. The blouse is of linen with billowing sleeves and decorated with ancient lace. The corselet is black velvet, the skirt red and white or black with blue straps. IJnderneath are worn petticoats and pantaloons fastened to the knee. Their famous cafeline headdress of plaited straw and black mittens complete the costume. 26

The Haifa Students Folklore Group comes to Billingham under the direction of Zeev Sternberg from the Youth and Sports department of the Haifa municipality. Haifa is Israel's labour to-rrrn enf, gateway to the world. Here folk dancing is encouraged not only to preserve tradition and folklore but

to provide healthy recreation for young and old.

The dancers are all amateurs who devote most of their leisure time to furthering folk dance. The gro r! is known throughout Israel as one of the best and has established an excellent reputation

in many European

countries.

The dances are based on old and new tradition, some being influenced by the spirit of the Bible, some by tle of the Ingathering of the Exiles into Israel, and others by the dynamic and gay -dgq99s atmospherâ‚Ź of Kibbuty life. The costumes portray a develop-ment of new folklore traditions. Music is provided by flute, trumpet, clarinet, saxaphone, and a drum. 28
