FOREWORD
It is a pleasurable task for me to be given the opportunity of introducing the programme for Billingham's lnternational Folklore Festival. When one thinks back to our modest beginnings in 1965 and then considers the wide range of activities this year we realise the tremendous development which has been made in such a short space of time. This reflects great credit on the members of the late Billingham Urban District Council and its officials. Their enterprise and courage in sponsoring this festivat, unique in Britain, and making it such a great succe.ss, are an example to all local authorities taking an interest in the provision of cultural entertainments for their people. We can, I feel certain, look forward to the future with confidence. This year the festival is directly supported by the Teesside County Borough Council and we have the resources and staff of the Arts and Recreation Department to call upon for assistance. Given this backing, continuity and developmentt in the years to come seem assured. Development there witt have to be if Teesside's large population is to be given the opportunity to see the concerts of their choice. lt is clear that despite the use of two theatres each night many will be unable, for the second year, to gain admission to the evening concerts. I look forward to this year's festival with keen anticipation. We welcome old friends in the Valencia University Choir and the Haifa Students Folklore Group. Mr. Rezso Vegvari, the artistic director of the ensemble 'Avas', came here in 1965 with the first group of Hungarians to attend the festival. Our new visitors from home and abroad will, I am sure, be given a wonderful welcome from the Billingham audience whose enthusiasm has been one of the main reasons for the success of the festival. The friendliness and warmth of the festival supporters have in the past inspired our friends from overseas to give of their very best.
Long may this warmth of welcome, and this festival. continue so that Teesside, famous nationally and internationally for its steel, chemicals and ships, mzy achieve as great a reputation as a centre where, each year, the people of the world gather, forgetting their differences, to enfoy themselves in song, music and dance.

ITALY ,CANTERINI PELORITANI'- MESSINA, SICILY. This group, 30 strong. comes to Billingham with the reputation of being one of the outu standing folk ensembles of its country. lts services have been eagerly sought after for festivals outside its own country and they have visited in recent years France, Holland. Belgium, Austria, Czecho-Slovakia, Germany, Switzerland and the U.S.A. They present a wide variety of songs and dances traditional to their island, all of which
have been influenced to an extent by the various foreign powers which have occupied the country through the ages. Costume is colourful and interesting. lt is 17th Century dress which the peasants of Monte Peloritani used to wear on special occasions such as Feast Days. Marriages, Harvest Festivals, etc.
The instruments are also unusual. We have the familiar accordeons and tambourines used by so many folk groups, but the Scacciapersieri (An iron instrument with a plate of steel whose vibrations give a very distinctive sound). the Friscalattu (a bamboo cane flute played by the shepherds) and the Ouartara (an earthenware jug) are new to this festival. The group is gay. light hearted, colourful, and very attractive. Like 'Gioppini' who carne to us last yearfrom Bergamo 'Canterini Peloritani' are sponsored by E.N.A.L., the ltalian workers organisations which promotes sport and culture. 30

BELGRADE
This Cultural and Artistic Association is promoted by the Transport Workers Union and was founded in 1945. lt is named after a national hero, Branko Cvetkovic, a railway engineerarchitect, who was killed in action fighting against the enemy occupants of his country in 1941 The members of the Association are mainly railwaymen and boatmen and the members of their .
families.
Since 1945 the organisation has given 2170 concerts in front of more than 2 million people.
ln addition to performances in their own country the ensemble has visited ltaly. France,
Great
Britain (Harrogate and Llangollen), Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany, Austria. Rumania, and Hungary. There are 12-l members in the Folk Dance, Song and Music Ensemble. 40 of these will be at Billingham. Music and dances of the whole country are in their wide repertoire and the costumes of every region will be seen. There are two instrumental groups and all will welcome again another Tamburitza Orchestra and Tupan which were such an interesting feature of 'Tine Rozanc's performances last year.
For its outstanding contribution to the spread of culture and prt 'Branko Cvetkovic' has been awarded a special decoration by the President of the Yugoslav Republic. 31

ISRAEL HAIFA STUDENTS FOLKLORE GROUP The many thousands of people who watched this group at Billingham in 1966 urill be looking forward to another series of brilliant performances by these dynamic young people who made such a profound impression here on their last visit. The group once again will be under the leadership of Mr. Zeev Sternberg from the Youth and Sports Department of Haifa Municipality. Choreographer and Artistic Director once again is Mr. Jonathan Gabai. Haifa is lsrael's gateway to the world and folk dancing is encouraged not only to preserve tradition but also as a recreation for young and old. Dances are based on old and new traditions; some being influenced by the spirit of the Bible; some by the dances of the lngathering of the Exiles into lsrael and others by the gay, dynamic atmosphere of Kibbutz life. The costumes portray a development of new folklore traditions. Music is provided by flute, trumpet, clarinet, saxophone. and drum. This group has a wide, varied lnternational experience. They have toured Europe on several occasions and after appearing in Billingham in 1966 went on to Dijon, France where they won the Golden Disc, one of the most prized trophies for folk dancing in the world. Last year the group was invited to Teheran to perform at the celebrations marking the Shah
of Persia's coronation.

IRELAND THE GREHAN SISTERS FROM BOYLE, COUNTY ROSCOMMON Marie, Francie and Bernadette Grehan come to us from a small town in Western lreland famous as a centre of traditional music, having staged the Fleadh Ceol, lrelands' annual festival of folk song and music twice in recent years. The sister were brought up in the family's hotel and their earliest memories are of traditional singing and dancing without which no social evening in Roscommon would be complete.
As a group performing traditional songs and music, their sound is exciting yet at the same time sensitive. They have the ability to arrange folk material with natural verve keeping clear of the mere sentimental or stamp and shout treatments. The girls have several records on sale and their appearances on T.V., Radio and the main concert halls of Great Britain are winning them a wide popularity outside their own country. ln 1967 they appeared at the Keele and Edinburgh Festivals. They can be seen at Billingham in both theatres on Sunday, August 18th and at the Billingham Arms Concert on Tuesday, August 20th.
JOHN DOONAN-Traditional lrish Flute Player Born of lrish parents in Hebburn, Co. Durham, John learnt his music in the traditional folk way at home, at his fathers' knee. He formed his own Ceili Band in 1946 and this has flourished to the present day. ln 1 966 John won the Flute Championship at the Fleadh Ceol
lreland's Annual Traditional
- at traditional festivals in Music Festival. As an individual performer he has been in great demand recent years. He has performed at Keele, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Cambridge. This year, in addition appear at Keele and Llangollen.

ST. LEONARD'S IRISH DANCERS This group is well known in Billingham, having participated in the 1965 and 1966 Festivals. They have also entertained in the Town Centre at Saturday afternoon concerts.
Their programme is.presented in two different costumes. The first part is in the dress used by the modern competitive and exhibition lrish Dance team; one item is in ordinary dress that you might see young people wear at their ceilis held every fortnight in Sunderland. The second part is peasant costume you might have seen worn in lreland prior to 1845. They wi'll dance to the music of John Doonan and his Band who have been associated with the dancers since they formed the St. Leonard's lrish Dance Society in 1949. This group performs at both theatres on Sunday night.

ENGLAND STOCKTON ENGLISH FOLK DANCE SOCIETY This group formed 1 5 years ago has become one of the leading Folk Dance groups in Britain. They have travelled more than 20,000 miles representing England in lnternational Festivals in lreland, Yugoslavia, ltaly, Holland and Germany. Their famous 'Blue and Gold' Rapper team will have been seen by many Festival visitors when they appeared here in 1965 and 1967 or in the television presentation of their performance at the Folklore Festival in the Royal Albert Hall in February last year. This was their fourth invitation to dance in the Albert Hall; an appearance here is regarded as the
highest honour in the Folk Dance and Song World. The Sword Dancers maintain an ancient local tradition surviving among the coal miners and workers in iron, and closely linked with the mumming plays which used to be a common feature of village life. ln this folk custom the'sword'is a dance property rather than a weapon of offence.
The Northumbrian sword dance is called a 'Rapper.'
