FOREWORD Welcome to the fifth Billingham lnternational Folklore Festival.
I am delighted to welcome all the members of the many
Groups who are performing at the Festival. The members of Roque Nublo and Tine Rozanc who so delighted us in I967 are already old friends, and I also extend a special welcome to those who are visiting Billingham for the first time. Mast of you have travelled long distances to the Festival, and I know the whole Town is looking forward to seeing you, and will do everything possible to make your visit an enjoyable one. We are all looking forward to your performances, and you can be sure of having large and enthusiastic audiences. I also welcome everyone who comes to the Festival Concerts. It is your interest and enthusiasm which really creates the Festival atmosphere. ln this programme you will find full details of all the Festival events. and of all the dancers, singers and musicians taking part. Even if you have not visited the Festival before you will be impressed by the long lists of events, and the many countries which are sending Groups to entertain us. But those who have enjoyed previous Festivals will
know that photographs and the printed word only give
a
small impression of what the Festival is really like. The colour, music, and dancing have delighted us all in the past, and you can be sure that this year's Festival will eontinue the high standard we have always maintained. But the Festival is more than just the performances themselves. The setting of many concerts in the Town Centre itself, the
personal contacts with our visitors from home and abroad, and the Festival spirit in the whote Town-all these make the Festival a unique experience.
This year we have tried to make it possible for even more people to enjoy the Festival. We cannot enlarge our two Theatres, but we have doubled the number of reserved tiered seats available for the Town Centre concerts, which have also been lengthened. Visitors who cannot stay for an evening concert will be able to enjoy a good sample of Festival fare during the day-and can round off with a visit to the Forum. At the other end of the day, the Festival Club will provide a pleasant late-night venue where visitors and performers can meet informally.
Although its appeal is widening each year, the Festival remains essentially a Billingham event. lt is now promoted by the Teesside Council, but the Festival Committee and the hundreds
of voluntary workers are virtually all Billingham people, working to make the Festival a success in our own Town Centre and Theatres. The enthusiasm of our Billingham audiences has to be seen (and heard) to be believed. Finally, may I thank all those who have worked so hard to make the fifth Billingham lnternational Folklore Festival a succes,s.
I am sure it will be.

TATCHELL,

AVILES, ASTURIAS
Aviles is a sea port and industrial centre on the north coast of Spain. lt has a most interesting history most of which'is associated with the sea, exploration and fishing. The area of the town where the sailors and fishermen live is known as the Sabugo quarter and it is from here that our Spanish group derives its name. There were at one time several folk groups in the town and this now is thebnly one left, holding on firmly (Tente firme) to the traditions
of the past. The group consists of a choir, dancers and the two traditional instruments of the region the Gaita (P'ipes) and Tambor (Drum). Castanets and tambourines are also used for the dance accompaniment. The repertoire consists of items from the whole of the Asturias region with special accent on the songs and dances of Aviles and the Sabugo quarter. This group has a long history having been founded in 1910. They have.performed all over Spain and in lgOi visited Madrid to take pariin a television programme and to make two L.P. records which are most interesting. ln the same year they toured Portugal singing and dancing in Lisbon, Oporto and Estoril. They have also visited France and are preparing to visit. Central and South America at the..invitation of the Asturian societies in Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil.

FOLK ENSEMBLE "DOINA"

BUCHAREST
This group of folk dancers, singers and musicians is made up of students who attend the University of Bucharest. Dance arrangements are made by two outstanding choreographers George Baciu and lon Gubernico. The 15 piece orchestra consists of Violas, Violins, Double Bass, Cello, Clarinet, Cymbeline (A familiar sight now at this festival) and a traditional Pipe of Pan never heard at Billingham before. This unusual shepherd's instrument has a beautiful tone and attracted a great deal of interest when played by a member of the Rumanian State Folk Ensemble which toured this country in 1967. The Orchestra Leader is Horia Crisan and the Musical Director-Constantin Arvinte. Their stage Director is Nicolai Frunzetti.
No group has come to Billingham with a greater reputation than these young Rumanians. Wherever they have travelled in Europe France, Germany, Belgium, Turkey the audiences and- press response has been outstanding. The newspapers of every town in which they have performed gave them 'rave' notices and encore after encore was demanded by huge enthusiastic audiences. They offer us a colourful and exhilarating spectacle with a repertoire of items from every part of their country. Their exciting acrobatic dances will undoubtedly be one
of the outstanding features of this year's festival.
On Tuesday evening they give the whole of the second part of the programme at the Forum Theatre. This promises to be a memorable occasion. 42

FOLKLORE GROUP'CHINO ERMACORA'
-TARCENTO
For the third successive year we have the pleasure of receiving a group from ltaly. Once again we are grateful to E.N.A.L. (The ltalian Workers Organisation which sponsors the arts and leisure activities) for providing us with a group of singers, dancers and musicians.
'China Ermacora' come from Tarcento, a town north of Udine near the border of ltaly and Yugo-Slavia. They are comparative neighbours of the 'Tine Rozanc' group in Ljubljana which is only about 80 miles away. These ltalians will offer us the traditional music and dances of the region of Friuli. Their beautiful, colourful costumes have been modelled on the suggestions made by Professors Lea D'Orlandi and Gaetano Perusini in their works on the folk traditions of Udine. One of their dances entitled 'scottish' is an 8th century Venetian dance with Scottish steps and movements introduced by emigrants from that country.
This group has performed all over ltaly as well as in Austria, France, Switzerland, Spain, Holland, Czechoslovakia, Portugal. Earlier this year they have been in Germany and Luxemburg.
After the wonderful entertainment provided by 'Gioppini' from Bergamo and 'Canterini Peloritani' from Messina, we look forward to seeing 'Chino Ermacora' with keen anticipation.

The two new members whom we see for the first time are Dave Pegg and Andy Smith. This was Britains' first professional folk group in the contemporary revival and it has a distinguished record. They founded and still run Britain's largest and most successful folk club.
They have issued more records than any other group of this type. They have appeared on television and in concerts in most of the countries of Europe.
We have here five distinguished people each making a distinctive and significant contribution to every performance. The group tops an interesting bill for the Folk Song and Music Concert in the CollegeTheatre on Tuesday evening.
