FOREWORD The Billingham Folklore Festival grew from entertainment provided in the Town Centre for Saturday

available to all. We therefore hold many concerts in the open air, at low prices, so that everyone may enjoy the music, colour, and excitement of the Festival. For the same reason the event is noncompetitive, so that the Groups can perform in an easy, relaxed atmosphere, and enjoy their stay

with

us.

We are also very proud of our contribution to international understanding. ln the past seven years we have welcomed Groups from twenty different countries outside the United Kingdom, and all have returned home firm friends of the people of Billingham, leaving many happy memories here.

But after seven years the Festival has grown and developed, and has gained a reputation far beyond Billingham and Teesside. Those with a special interest in folk music or dancing have an unrivalled opportunity to see and hear examples of the best performances from many different countries. No other non-competitive Festival in Great Britain offers such a range of folklore, and so many opportunities to

see

each Group's performances.

This year again, we welcome old friends and new. The Turk Folklore Kulubu, the Meersburg Boys Band, and the Tuna from Valencia, were all very popular during their earlier visits. We look forward

to seeing all the new groups, and especially welcome the groups from Bulgaria and Tunisia, as the f irst representatives of their countries to visit us.

I extend a very sincere welcome to all members of Groups taking part in the Festival. Our hope is that in providing enjoyment for us, you will also enjoy yourselves during your visit. Our many

helpers will work to ensure this, and the excellent faeilities of our Town Centre are at your service.

Finally may I thank allthe many people who help to organise and run the Festival, including Council Staff from Education and Recreational Departments, Forum Staff, and the hundreds of volunteers, including members of practically every organisation in Billingham. I am sure that once again the final verdict will be: "Even better than last year."

There can be very few people in Britain who either did not see, or at least, did not hear about the recent highly successful series shown first on B.B.C. 2 and more recently on B.B.C. 1, entitled "The Six wives of Henry Vlll," The B.B.C.'s decision to stage an exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, of the costumes used in the series was rewarded by an unprecedented response from the public, some of whom queued for as long as two hours to gain admission to the Exhibition. This tremendous interest in the exhibition is evident not only from the number of people but also visiting it in London as many as 4,000 a day saw it at the Victoria and Albert Museum from from the number of-requests from Museums and Local Authorities throughout the country, Aberdeen to Exeter, for a staging of the Exhibition in their own localities. ln view of such fierce competition, we in Teesside must consider ourselves extremely fortunate in being chosen as the next venue after the Victoria and Albert and Birmingham. Not only will

the Exhibition provide a unique opportunity for students of history, costume and design and indeed the general public, to see a truly first class exhibition on their own doorstep, it will also attract thousands of people into Teesside from the whole of the North of England.

The costumes themselves were designed by John Bloomfield, who spent an entire year gathering together his information in order to verify the accuracy of his designs. Prints of John Bloomfield's designs as presented to the wardrobe department will be on sale at the Exhibition, as well as records of the music used in the series and other souvenirs. 10

13th August for four weeks The exhibition is devoted to the contemporary Polish theatre. lts aim is to draw attention to the principal lines of development in Poland since the War, and to introduce the creative figures of the Polish stage, the directors, actors and designers. An exhibition cannot hope to be more than a showcase, presenting the theatre by means of photographs, slides, sketches, mock-ups and costumes. lt offers, therefore, a static picture of someifrlng i-hai is essentially dynamic, in which one of the basic element is the presence-and participation of liiing people, performers and audience. lt is in other words a two-dimensional image of a threedimensional'realiiy further animated by colour and light. The space alloted has also radically curtailed the choice and range of this illustrative material, limiting the purview. ln many cases it has

not been possible to do more than barely adumbrate some point of interest.

Nevertheless the organisers are anxious that the exhibition should help..the .British public to develop a general impresiion of the style and nature of the contenpolary Polish theatre, obtain a rough idtea 5t its pre-occupations and dbtect its variety and vitality. For it is a theatre which plays a proilinent role in the total pattern of Polish culture, an art that is adventurous, alive to the universal pioblems of the modern age, composite in its make-up yet very intimately linked with the concerns of the Poles and the native tradition.

BULGARIA

FOLK ENSEMBLE "SREDEZ" Bulgaria has been represented at the Billingham Festival and it is This is the first occasion -SOFIA rewarding to know that the leading Folk Ensemble in the country is coming to us. "Sredez" has a long history, having been formed in 1937. They give each year 60 concerts in the Capital, Sofia and also tour the countiy. They have a wide repertoire and many other groups in Bulgaria take "Sredez" as their model. The group has performed in Yugoslavia, Rumania, Hungary, Poland, U.S.S.R., Germany, Switzertand, ltaly, France, Algeria and Tunisia. This is their first visit to the British lsles. At competitive events both inside and outside Bulgaria, they have won many first prize awards. They have received the Order "Cyrille and Methode," the greatest artistic distinction in their own country. ln Dijon, France in 1966 they were awarded the "Collar of Gold." This premier award, at Burgundy's great Folklore Festival associated with the Wine Harvest, is probably the most difficult folk dance competition to win. On the occasion of "Sredez's" success the lsraeli group from Haifa were placed second. Regular supporters of this festival will know from this result just what standard to expect from these Bulgarians. Dances in a variety of costumes from all the regions of their country will be presented at Billingham as well as a wide selection of traditional songs and music. There will be 42 artistes in this ensemble. By arrangement with Teesside's Museums Department and the Bulgarian Embassy in London, we are able to present an exhibition of folk costume from this country during Festival Week. "Sredez" give the whole of the second part of the concert in the Forum Theatre on Saturday,

August

14th.

"The White Cockade" in the Albert HaI

THE LONDON FESTIVAL DANCERS This is the first English Dance Company to spend a full week at the Festival. lt comprises 60 young people who come from various branches of the E.F.D.S.S. in Southern England. They work together on Sundays at Cecil Sharp House. They are one of the main attractions at the succesful Albert Hall Festival organised each February by the English Folk Dance and Song Society. At Billingham they will be under the direction of Ron Smedley and Bob Parker who have done some unusually exciting productions with English Folk Dance as a basis. Ron Smedley is no stranger to the North East. At one time he was the Society's representative in the area. He now works as a Television Producer with B.B.C. Bob Parker is a Physical Education Organiser who has made dance a special study and spent a year at the Laban Movement Studio. Both he and Ron also teach folk dance to the students of the Royal Ballet School. They will present two main theatre productions which should not be missed. "The White Cockade" will be performed in the Forum Theatre on Saturday and Monday evenings. This is a a parade of songs sung by soldiers, to soldiers and about soldiers dramatisation of World War I lt was assembled for the 1970 Albert Hall Festival where it with suitable dance accompaniments. was acclaimed by press and public as the major success of that year. Ron Smedley sought the help and advice of Charles Chilton with this item. He was for many years a member of the English Folk Dance and Song Society and was the writer and pioneer of the radio programme "Long, Long Trail" which was to become Joan Littlewood's stage production of "Oh What a Lovely War" and Richard Attenborough's film. He also wrote and produced "Follow the Drum" for B.B.C. radio, a history in song of l Bth and 19th Century army life. Any resemblance to "Oh What a Lovely War" is entirely accidental and much hoped for.

This ensemble is an unusual combination of Jews and Arabs. The Jewish section'Hora' has Rachel Berenson as its Artistic Director. The Arab group known as 'Anwar El Kuds" is directed by Victor Sabella.

The'Hora'Dance group has been active in Jerusalem since 1960. In 1964 it was taken under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and in the same year did its first European tour, ln 1967 Hora became the municipal dance group of the city of Jerusalem.

lmmediately following the reunification of Jerusalem after the 6 Days War the Department for the city's Cultural Youth and Sports Activities began to organise activities amongst the youth of Eastern Jerusalem. The authorities set out to encourage folklore activities amongst Arab youth and bring closer together the youth of both parts of the city by having them become acquainted with each others folklore. Out of these activities emerged the Arab ensemble "Anwar El Kuds." The group's instructor is Mr. Victor Sabella a young Arab resident of Eastern Jerusalem who studied choreography in Lebanon for five years and who has a wide knowledge of Arab folklore. There are 27 dancers in the ensemble and six musicians who play accordion, clarinet, flute, guitar, durbake and trumpet. The singer is Pamira Avivi.

SPAIN

FOLK TNSTRUMENTAL AND SONG GROUP "TUNA UNIVERSITERIA DE VALENCIA" Few groups have received such a reception at their first appearance as did the Tuna from Valencia last year. The natural ease with which the group settled down here was almost incredible, when one considers this was for all of them, the first time they had sung for an audience outside their own country. The 'Tuna' which is an organisation to be found at most universities in Spain does not exist to give concerts to entertain the public. They aim to preserve their country's old tradition of serenading the ladies. Their activities consist of going around their own town on Saturday nights and feast days singing to the girls. This group from Valencia does it exceptionally well made.

-

so well that they have had an L.P.

The standard of their musicianship and singing was at times lost amidst the laughter their humour aroused last year. Having had one year's experience of the Festival (The first they had ever attended) we can look forward to even better performances this August. Their medieval costume attracted a lot of interest in 1970. The ribbons given to them by the girls whom they had impressed were a decorative feature much admired. FOLK ENSEMBLE OF HAMMAMET

The festival organisers have for two years tried to obtain a group from Tunisia and are at last become a reality. We owe our thanks to the Tunisian Embassy in London and the Ministry of Culture in Tunis for valuable assistance rendered in helping with t'he arrangepleased that it has

ments to bring this small ensemble to Billingham.

The exotic costumes of the girl dancers and the unusual instruments of the musicians will introduce a new medium to our festival. This will be the group's second visit to England in consecutive years. ln 1 970 they came to London to entertain at the reception given to mark the opening of the Tunisian Tourist Bureau. Their performance at the Hilton Hotel was an outstanding success and we feel certain they will be a very popular group with audiences here.

ISTANBUL

This group of students from lstanbul University made a profound impression on their first visit here in 1969. Not onty did they impress our audiences but also the B.B.C. Film Unit which made for television, a film of that year's event. Festival enthusiasts will remember both the 'Bursa Sword and Shield' and 'Spoon' dances which were featured in the film. This group is 48 strong. They have colourful, exotic dances and costumes from every region of their country, Their repertoire is interesting and exciting. The warrior dances, which will once again

be presented in town square and theatre, caused a greater sensation than anything previously featured here. Turk Folklore Kulubu aims at creating a cultural link between the people of its own country and the rest of the world. The group has toured in the U.S.A., West Germany, Spain and Central Europe.

On Thursday evening the group gives the whole second part of the Forum Theatre programme.
