FOREWORD The Bitlingham lnternational Fo[ktore Festival is a wonderful experience and an occasion to which thiousandi of people now look forward each year. Since it began, seven years_ago, .the Festival has grown in iize'and stature and is now one of the most important events in the Teesside calendar. /ts sTccess has been ensured by the very high standards of the performers, by the warm and enthusiastic reception that they'have received from Festival supporters and .by. the-.endeavours of the many volunteers who work efficiently behind the scenes. lt has amply iustified the faith and vision of those who pioneered it in the early days. It is particularty fitting that we should, this year, think back to those pione.ering dgVs. lred Dawson was at that time CErk to the Bittingham'lJrban District Council and it was largely due to hi, inspiration and boundless enthusiaim that our Festival tradition was successfully launched. Atihough he teft Biltingham five years ago to become Director of the North East Development Counc'il, he has remai"ned one oi the Festival's keenest supporters. This year he is to perform our opening ceremony and I know that it witt be a very great ioY for his many friends in Billingham to welcome him as a guest of honour. More than 600 perf ormers witl be attending the Festival this year, representing l4 different countries and I extend to them all a very warm welcome. lt has become our custom each year to invite at has not preuiously sent representatives and,..this year, we least one group "with' from a country which from Greece and Portugal. But we will also be very dancers time, for first us, the witt have La Ciamada Nissarda' glad to welcome back three groups who have attended previous Festivals Brazzaville who from Diaboua' Ballet'Les Folk in 1966; Festival at our second Tram Nice were came in 1 970 and the Falk Dance Group of Educacion Y Descanso Valencia who visited us in 1967. witl fottow the pattern which has now become established. Lunchtime concerts The programme 'be -held in the Town Centre each day if the weather permits and in the College or Forum witt Theatres if the"weather is not good. Seating arrangements for the Town Centre concerts have been further improved by the addition of a fourth stand. Evening concerts will be held throughout the week in the College and Forum theatres. The Festival is organised for the enjoyment of spectaiors and performers and as a means of fostering international friendship. I am confident that it will succeed in both of these aims.

GERMANY

THE ACCORDEON ORCHESTRA OF RHEINHAUSEN Each year we bring to Billingham some aspect of folk dance or music which is completely different to anything seen or heard at the Festival before. This year festival supporters areduefora most unusual and interesting experience when they attend performances by this famous group of musicians from West Germany. The accordeon is one of the most popular and common place instruments in the musical sections of folk ensembles. An accordeon orchestra, however, is something quite different to any of the musical combinations seen here in the past and is not normally seen in England.

The orchestra consists of 16 accordeons (2 of which are bass) 2 kettledrums and 1 other set of percussion. Under their conductor Guido Wagner they will play German folk music, light classical compositions and items specially composed for accordeon orchestras, These are, apparently,

fairly common on the continent especially in Germany and Holland. This Orchestra was founded in 1 950 and has established itself as one of the leading accordeon

combinations in Western Europe. Since 1960 when Wagner became their conductor the group has had many successes including victory in the German Championship in Heidelberg. They broadcast frequently and visit other neighbouring countries. ln 1970 they came to Durham as guests of the County Council and received tumultuous receptions at concerts given in Durham City and Stanley. Arrangements for their visit to Billingham have been made with their Business Manager, l. Schloss and their Chairman Harald Sefzig will be in charge of the group during their stay. 33

HUNGARY

FOLK ENSEMBLE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF ECONOMICS-BUDAPEST This ensemble was founded in 1948 when the University was established. The members are, in the main, undergraduates and graduate students. The group takes part each year in the various folklore festivals in Hungary and has achieved distinction on many occasion. Hungarian dancing, as festival supporters know, is spectacular, colourful and exciting. will maintain the high standard which we have come to expect by groups from this country. Their repertoire includes the famous Bottle Dance, Spurs Dance and other items depicting the various traditions of the country.

These young students are outstanding performers and

The ensemble has an 1 1 piece orchestra which will be led by Laszlo Gulyaswho has composed orarranged many of the items to be played at the festival.

ln addition to the orchestral music there will be performances on the Hungarian Bagpipe by Laszlo Fustoo. This instrument has not been heard before in Billingham. The group has travelled widely abroad appearing at the Salzburg lnternational Festival in 1965 and'the well known Balkan Folklore Festival in Ohrid, Yugoslavia in 1966. They have made three ltalian tours and gave a series of performances in Amsterdam last year. I

The group give the whole of the second part of the programme in the Forum Theatre on Thursday night. 35

ENGLAND

THE REGIMENTAL BAND AND CORPS OF DRUMS OF THE 2nd BATTALION THE ROYAL REGIMENT OF FUSILIERS (Appearing by kind permission of the Commanding Officer Lt. Col. J. C. Reilly) ln the year 1674len companies of Englishmen were raised under Sir Walter Vane to fight against the French in Holland. These companies were later formed into two Regiments-the Fifth and Sixth of Foot. Later two further Regiments were formed, the Seventh and Twentieth of Foot. All four regiments were armed with the "Fusil" or the French Musket. When Regiments of Foot were affiliated to counties of England the Fifth became affilliated to Northumberland, the Sixth to Warwickshire, the Seventh to the City of London and the Twentieth to Lancashire. By 1963 all four Regiments were formed into a Fusilier Brigade and on St. George's Day 1968 the Regiments ceased their separate identity and formed the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers with three Battalions. The Band of the 2nd Battalion returned from Berlin in July 1971 after a successful two year tour in that City and are now stationed in Catterick, Yorkshire. They performed on manycivic and military occasions and were popular with the Berliners for their lively concerts in and around the city. On one occasion the Band travelled to Potsdam in East Germany for an Anglo-Soviet reception. The-Winter of 1971-72 saw the Band in N. lreland where their prime function was to entertain troops. In addition to this they also carried out regular military duties along with other soldiers of the Battalion. During May and June of 1912 the Band will be in Western Canada on a Public Relations tour while the Battalion is on exercise. The Bandmaster is Mr. Rodney J. Parker who is an Associate of the Royal College of Music. The Band appears only at the Closing Ceremony on Saturday August 19th. 41
