Foreword

It

is a great pleasure

to welcome you to the 11th Billingham lnternational Folklore Festival.

The Festival is a happy and joyful.event, organised each year by the Festival Committee in co-operation with the Stockton on Tees Borough Council and with the support of Northern Arts. Its main purpose is to provide entertainmentfor the many thousands of spectators and supporters and I am confident that, with this year's programme, it will once again succeed in that aim.

I hope, however, that we shall all find here something more than just another week of entertainment. A nation's folklore is its traditional beliefs and way of life - its cultural heritage. The Billingham Festival offers us a chance to learn something about people from other lands through a means of communication that transcends the barriers of language. Here we shall see a portrayal of some of the traditions of other nations expressed in traditional songs and dances, through traditional music played on traditional instruments. Each performance, rooted in the ordinary things of life, reaffirms for us that in everyday activities, honestly conceived and executed with care, we can f ind beauty and inspiration and an expression of our common humanity. For its d*istence and its success the Festival must draw on us all. ln return it restores to us an enriching, joyful and joyous sense of family; a family which embraces all - performer and spectator, organiser and worker. Welcome to the family. KEN BATES Chairman

THE DAY THOU GAVEST

The day thou gavest, Lord is ended The darkness falls at thy behest, To thee our morning hymns ascended, Thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

3. As o'er

thank thee that thy Church unsleeping, While earth rglls onward into light, Through afthe world her watch is keeping And rests not now by day or night.

4. The

each continen,t and island, The dawn leads on another day, The voice of prayer is never silent,

Nor dies the strain of praise away.

2. We

sun that bids us rest is waking,

Our brethren 'neath the western sky, And hour by hour fresh lips are making, Thy wondrous doings heard on high.

5. So be it, Lord, thy throne shall

never,

Like earth's proud empires, pass away, Thy kingdom stands and grows for ever, Till all thy creatures own thy sway.

Bulgaria Folk Ensemble of Varna

Varna is a well known holiday resort on the Black Sea Coast and this group is the official Folk Ensemble of the town. They come to us through Anna Tritchkova who is the Director of the Artistic lnstitute for Amateurs in Sofia. She sent to us "sredetz" in 1971 and "Mayakowski" in 1973. These ensembles brought a newdimension to the Festival which has made Bulgarian folklore tremendousllL,popular in Billingham. The dancing is vigorous and exciting, the costumes varied and colourful; the music has a rhythm which is unforgettable. Like the previous visitors from Bulgaria the Varna Ensemble will present dances from every region of the country and this makes theirprogrammesfullof avariety of contrasts which never fail to hold the interest of the audience.

The group has had a distinguished past and made successful tours in recent years to the soviet Union, German Democratic Republic, Hungary, ltaly, Poland and France. They give the whole of the second part of the programme in the Forum Theatre on Monday evening and in the College Theatre on Wednesday night.

For people who have supported this festival since its early days it is difficult to realise that is almost 10 years since this group first danced and sang their way through our town square and began to create this exclusive, unique atmosphere *hi"t'l can only be-experienced in this town during Festival week.

it

"Roque Nublo" has won for itself a special place in the history of the Billingham Festival and the organisers will never forget the outstand'ing contributions made by this group in 1966 and 1967, the years which initially established this eient in the calendar of the region and proved that folk song, music and dance could be presented as a form of theatrical art.

The group last visited us in 1969 and were featured extensively in David Bean,s film made - the for B'B'C' that year. The photograph above carries many unfamiliar faces. Folk groups

are, however, mainly made up of young beople and like our football teams, the turnover in personnel is considerable. lt will be good to see Fabian and Jose Brito again and if the remainder are as talented as their predecessors, then we can look forward to a very gay week.

"Roque Nublo" present the folk traditions of their islands in their national dress. This is a most beautiful, interesting costume which will add a great oeat of colour to our Festival.

Hungary Folk Ensemble "Vasas" - Budapest

It is 4 years since we have had a group from Hungary and we are pleased to welcome "Vasas" who represent their iountry here this year. Regular supporters of the Festival will recall the brilliant music we have heard from Hungarian groups which have come here in the past. The outstanding string and cymbalom performances of tfeir orchestras have been a most popular feature. Who can forgettheviolin playing of Lazslo Berki and the singing of Gipsy Kate Madarascz in 1971. "Vasas" have a great reputation for dancing and will perform

a

wide repertoire of itemsfrom

every region.

-liVasas" was founded in 1946 and is supported by the Trade Union of Workers in the Steel, Metal and Electrical Power industries. The dancers are mainly workers in the steel industry, students and other union employees.'They rehease three nights each week for three hours each night and have a high standard of dance technique and artistic performance.

The group has toured Czechoslovakia, U.S.S.R., German Democratic Republic, Austria, Yugoslavia, Algeria, Norway, Spain and France. The group gives the second half of the concert in the College Theatre on Tuesday night.

This group comes to us under the auspices of the ltalian National Committee for folklore which is a section of E.N.A.L., the organisation which sponsors the country's cultural and leisure activities.

It

is the second Sicilian group to come to England and is rated as highly as "Canterini of Messina which proved to be very popular in 1968 and 1970.

Peloritani"

The group is lively, exuberant and gay. Their wide repertoire of songs and dances reflect the dynamism, joy of living and dreaming sadness of the Sicilian people.

l' l-

Agrigerrto is situated in the Valley of the Temples. lt is one of the oldest settlements in the Mqditerranean. Each year in February, it is the scene of a famous folklore event "The Festival of'the Almond Blossom". i'

The ensemble has four main dances - The Dance of Spring; A Ouadrille: a Mazurka and "U Chiovi" - the oldest Sicilian Tarantella. They sing the traditional and popular songs of their island and are accompanied by a folk orchestra which is made up of Pipe, Drum, Jew's Harp, Accordion, Guitar, Mandoline, and Ouartara - an earthenware jug which blown into is used as a contrabass. The costumes are very colourful with ribboned tambourines carried by the girls. Their gay will, I am sure, appeal to all sections of our audience.

dress matches the lively presentation which

The group, in recent years, has performed with distinction in Switzerland, Germany, France, Tunisia and Poland. We look forward to this, their firstvisit to England. 33

Poland The Folk Ensemble "Opole"- Opole

This Folk Song, Dance and lnstrumental group come from Opole in Silesia which is in South West Poland. They were specially recommended to us by Michael Kosinski, Vice President of the C.l.O.F.F. and a Senior Officer in the Ministry of Culture in Warsaw. He attended the Billingham Festival for the f irst time last year.

ln addition to specialising in songs and dancesfrom their own region, the ensemble has in its repertoire items from the whole of Poland. The presentation will be in the tradition of the "Kracowiacy" and "Wroclaw" groups which visited us in 1971 and 1973. Both had outstanding successes at this Festival. The brilliant, varied, colourful costumes;beautiful music and singing, dynamic dancing, all so skilfully arranged and'presented has endeared Polish Ensembles to the supporters of this Festival. "Opole" fiave taken part in many Festivals and competitions in their own country and other parts of Europe. They have won several major awards in Poland which rank the group among their country's best. Last year they were in Nice, France and in 1973 in West Germany and the Canary lslands. Their brilliant performances in these recent tours have brought outstanding Press notices and we arq sure they will be one of the most populargroups at Billingham this year. A Flamenco Group from Spain Danzas is Spain's largest folklore organisation with over 700 groups supported

directly by the government. The National Director is Maria J. Sampelayo whom we have to thank for sending us these two groups this year. ln a normal year between 30 and 40 dance ensembles from this organisation represent Spain at Festivals all over the world. This year they are holding their national tri-ennial festival and as this costs a great deal of money they can only send three groups abroad and one of these is coming to Billingham. When Mr. Conroy, the Festival Director, attended the last festival of "Coros y Danzas" in Madrid in 1972 he earmarked two Flamenco groups for future invitations to Billingham. One was thegnsemble from Seville who had an outstanding success here in 1973. The other is this group from Granada.

This is the Granada ensemble's second visit to England this year. ln March they performed at the New Theatre Oxford and the Albert Hall, London with two other Eroups from Andalusia and were very well received in both cities.

y Danzas exists to promote the true folk traditions of Spain. These dancers from will present pure Flamenco performed in the true style of their province.

The beautiful girls, gay costumes, dashing young men and brilliant musicians will be among the highlights of this year's festival.

The authentic traditional costumes of the various pro"rin..s will be worn to match the particular dances being performed. made modern Turkey

The Sword and Shield Dance from Bursa is one of the most spectacular items which has ever been seen at the Billingham Festival and will be included in this ensemble's repertoire. Another dance, for which the men wear military costume is that known as Kars and comes from the Caucasus region.

From Erzuzum we have a dance for girls only. Boys and girls were not permitted to dance together' The girls'dresses are those worn for-weddings in olden times and are very beautifully embroidered. The dresses were handed down from generation to generation. We wili also see the men's dance from this region. The leader of the group is the biidegroom dancing at his own

wedding.

Another men only item is the dance from Bitlis. From Silifke (South Anatolia) wewill the famous spoon ddnce performed in very old beautiful costumes.

The dance trom_Elaziz is very spectacular each dancer carrying two candles. Our Fire Regulations will not permit these to be used in the theatre and light bu-lbs will be substituted. Fr6m the Black Sea cbast region we will see a dance performed by t6e girls in the ensemble. ln this area the men were so jealous that they didn't dance with girls at all.

. An interesting variety of instruments will provide musical accompaniment. Most unusual of these are the Kemence a small three stringed instrument and theZurna, a pipe with a very harih tone. The breathing training involved in playing the latter takes 10 y.ears to perfect. The group gives the second part of the concert in the College Theatre on Monday night.
