How quickly times passes. We are now about to celebrate the 31st Billingham Festival. A wonderful and joyous festival which continues to give us so much pleasure! Not only pleasure - one of the outstanding feature! of Billingham Festival is the way in which links are created between people from all parts of the world. Friendships - many of them strong and lasting are renewed and created during this very brief period in August.
It is very much a community festival when, even without the knowledge of each others languages, communities from Russia, from Martinique, from the Philippines, from Puerto Rico and many other countries join with the community of Billingham to share the colou4 the music, the joy and laughter of each others culture. A welcome ray of light shines out and for a brief moment the darkness of the world's troubles may be put to one side. We are all especially delighted to have with us again from Gran Canaria, Roque Nublo, the group which did so much all those years ago to bring to life the Billingham Festival. ln welcoming friends - old and new - from across the world, I wish to thank you the audience, our army of voluntary helpers and all our sponsors. You make the Festival!
"How far that little candle throws his beam So shines a good deed in a naughty
world."

MARTINIQUT LES BALISIERS DE MARTINTQUE
- FORT DE FRANCE
The folklore group was formed in 1985 and comes from the capital
city of Martinique, an island in the Caribbean Sea.
The group took its name from a small shrub which grows in the tropical forests, the
flower of which has a surprising petal formation, a charming colou4 and an astonishingly long life, resisting inclement weather. The Basiliers de Martinique are thirty cheerf ul talented young
people who depict the many racial mixtures in
the island's people. The ensemble has great appeal to tourists, natives and spectators from the numerous countries in which it has given performances Canada; U.S.A.; Panama; ltaly; France; Belgium; Holland; and Austria. Their dances, songs and music present a whirl of colour, exciting sounds and rhythms, allowing audiences to discover astonishing, mysterious, sorrowful, happy and boisterous feelings of Martinique. The group will wear authentic costumes, perform energetic dances including love rituals, episodes from history; customs and carnival items. Some of the items will reflect the French influence as well as African and West lndies.

MOLDOVA
"KARUTSA" . KISHINEV The Folklore Ensemble "Karutsa"
is
only eight years old but already it has established an outstanding reputation at home in Moldova and also in Europe, Canada and America. The success of the group, in such
a
short period, is attributed to Mr. Victor Tanmoshan, who selected
skilful and enthusiastic performers to present Moldovian folklore to a high artistic standard. Accompanying the dancers will be the "Vatra" orchestra. Together; their wonderful confluence of music and dance gives birth to an inspired and emotional world of movement. Dances are amusing, exciting and dynamic. One of the Orchestra's items
will be "Skylark." Moldova, a republic of the former Soviet Union,
is
situated close to Romania, hence the similarity of some
trad itions.

LEYTE KALIPAYAN DANCE COMPANY. TACLOBAN CITY Leyte is one of the many islands which make up the Philippines. The group comes from Tacloban City, which is recognised as the island's capital for trade and culture. The company was created in 1961 by the current director, Teresita Veloso Pil, with the help of two lrish nuns who served in Leyte at that time. To identify itself with the province which has given it support and encouragement, the company adopted in 1978 the name of "Leyte Kalipayan" a vernacular term which means "Joy and Happiness." Since 1978 the company has performed in most countries of the world, proving to be outstanding ambassadors of the Philippines.
The Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company's extensive
repertoire consists of Philippine traditional dances, songs, music and customs which gives its audiences a kaleidoscopic view of the Philippine culture through these particular vehicles of artistic expression. Members of the Leyte Kalipayan Dance Company and the people who support and work with them aim to continue to generate enthusiasm and pride in their national culture through the innate artistry of the Philippinos in song and dance. They bring the spirit of international brotherhood, through the sharing of Kalipayan (the joy of life) with the people of all the countries they visit. The group presents an extensive repertoire and brings numerous costumes to Billingham. Among the items they will present is the most famous of all Philippine dances, Tinikling, which comes from the Province of Leyte. The dancers hop in and out between rapidly beaten bamboo poles, in imitation of the tikling, a rice bird; Binaylan, a ritual dance, performed only by women during the full moon; Tahing Baila, a dance from Jolo, performers depict the movement of fish swimming. RUSSIA
SONG AND DANCE COMPANY OF KOMI "ASSYA KYA" (The Dawn) This yeari our Russian Ensemble comes from Komi, which lies north of the Ural Mountains on the Vychegda River. The company takes its name from an ancient song which has been passed from mouth to mouth by
several generations of Komi people.
"Assya Kya" is one of Russia's outstanding groups and has recently completed a season in Moscow.
Their songs, dances and musical instruments embody the customs, beliefs and national character of the Komi. The national costume with its crisscross adornment, characteristic design and geometric patterns, features also stylised human figures, reindeer antlers and fir trees. Many of the programmes will end with the Reindeer Breeders dance depicting young girls in embroidered parkas (the deers) and young men (the drivers) moving quickly across the snow covered plain (the stage) in a dynamic ancient northern dance which glorifies the sun.
Another beautiful item is the Northern Roundelay which features pretty girls clad in light silver blue robes whirling like a cloud of snowflakes. Their feet scarcely touch the ground, their tremulous motions are barely perceptible and onlookers witness the undulations of the scintillating northern lights. The ensemble carefully preserves a wealth of national art traditions and the legacy of professional composers and musicians who have, over many years lived and worked on Komi territory. Between the founding of the National Song & Dance Company in 1939 and the opening of the Musical Theatre of the Komi Republic in 1958, the ensemble was the sole professional artistic body developing and reflecting the musical culture of the Komi people.
Visiting Billingham, with the group, will be the Minister of Culture for the Komi Republic, Mr. Alexei Beznossikov.

AGRUPACION FOLKLORICA "ROQUE NUBLO" LAS PALMAS, GRAN CANARIA "Roque Nublo" has participated in the Billingham Festival on several occasions since its first visit here in 1967. The group remains a firm favourite with our audiences and we all look forward to receiving this colourful, lively ensemble in 1995. The group was founded in 'l 955 and takes its name from rock formation in Gran
a
Canaria. Dance, music and songs from the rich and varied traditions of the Canary lslands will be presented. Well remembered
items such as "lslas Canarias"; "Tartanero"; " Malaguenas"; and "Mi Canaria Adios" will be included in this year's programme.
