to welcome the new millennium with a flourish. Director Joe Maloney has been hard at work contacting groups and embassies in an effort to ensure that the year 2000 will see a festival, which will set a new standard of excellence for our event a dauntlng task. On the advice of the leader of the French group, which
performed here in 1998, Joe has successfully invited the Russian group 'Rus', which from the video provided will be the most brilliant Russian group we have every seen at Billingham. Another group committed to Billingham is
the Slovakian ensemble lanosik' bringing an echo of early fesitvals. TheY are from the High Tatra region from
which the first Slovakian group 'Urpin' came to the 2nd Billingham Festival. TheY have a very large repertoire of dances, songs and musical terms and a vast number of changes of costume. Two further groups from EuroPe have accepted our invitation' The Basque group 'ltsasi', another very versatile ensemble, and the world famous children's grouP from Belgium lan Pirrewit' are also committed to us. The Director is now looking world wide for exciting new groups to complete the line
up. Among the countries we would like to see represented are Cuba and Mexico but our main target is to persuade the Chinese to send one of their many spectacular companies here. ln addition the Festival Committee is hoping that the European grant, for which we have apPlied, will be successful and allow us to introduce a spectacular ltalian street theatre company in to
the programme. TheY will certainly be something quite new to the festival with their colourful imaginative and fantastic costumes, stilt walklng, fireworks and theatrical performances.
