Council in the North East, a member of the Arts Council England and Chief Executive of Newcastle College.
was delighted to be asked to speak at the opening of this year's Billingham International Folk Festival. As a former resident of the area I know how significant it is to the cultural life of Teesside, and how it has carved out an enviable reputation internationally for the work it does bringing together folk artists from around the world. I am especially pleased that in recent years Billingham Intemational Folk Festival has received continuing financial support from Arts Council through our lottery funded Grants for the Arts programme. Arts Council values the strong cultural contribution that Billingham International Folklore festival makes to the region. Though celebrating their 50th year the organisers have ensured the quality of the programme remains fresh, exciting and relevant to audiences of today by featuring a contemporary dance programme that
celebrates the diversity of today's England and through their recently expanded participation and workshop prograflrme ensures that they are reaching audiences of tomorrow. Their commitment to developing talent is evident encouraging artistic exchange between international dance artists through cross art-form collaborations and numerous professional development opportunities throughout the festival. I hope everyone who takes part, audience members, artists and organisers alike, has a fantastic time enjoying this important event. Yours sincqrely

lement Arts Company use Salsa and Afro-Cuban, and Samba and AfroBrazilian, as well as Contemporary dance theatre to create an exciting blend of culture, music and dance. The Orixa Gods and Godesses from Cuba and Brazil, each with a character, a dance, a colour and an element also inspire the Company movement and repertoire. Element Arts Company was establishedin2OOT by Ella Mesma. Described by Donald Hutera (The Times) as, 'superb', Ella is a highly skilled contemporary dancer, B Girl and Latin dancer, training at LSCD and working with Russell Maliphant, Southpaw, Anthony Egea (Compagnie Revolution). Ella's three very different dance forms have inspired her to create a unique style combining Latin dance with contemporary and other forms to reach new artistic heights and share the Latin cultural heritage with new communities, as well as to progress the Latin dance scene in the UK. The Company have been commissioned by Billingham Intemational Festival to create two new works - these are...
Orixas:
Ella Mesma has worked with an extraordinary group of performers to create a unique style combining Latin dance with contemporary inspired by the pathways and life stories of six women and six orixas (deities). These deities are Elegua the protector of travellers who represents crossroads, pathways, chaos, trickery and temptation. Oxum who represents female sexuality, love, marriage, beauty and rivers. Oya the warrior spirit of the underworld, wind, hurricanes, change, transition and chaos. Ogun the god of war, iron, hunting, politics and community, and Oxossi the hunter, shaman and god of nature, earth and justice, and finally, Obatala the creator and god of wisdom. Orixas is performed to a newly commissioned score by composer, Matthew Olden and made in collaboration with lighting designer Ciaran Cunningham.
Birds of Paradise: Birds of Paradise mixes the dynamism of contemporary dance with powerful samba. Taking the exuberance and energy of Brazil to new places, through Samba- the costume, the spectacle, the prowess, the display and the malandragem to explore birds. Their characteristics, personalities, relationships- looking in particular at bird mating calls and displays alongside a look at the female, the influence of the media on our identity and our
journey in life. Birds of Paradise original score is composed by Ball Zee, taking the infectious rhythms and unique instruments of Samba to create a track made entirely with voice. Made in collaboration with lighting designer Ciaran Cunningham.-

between ATMA Dance's Artistic Director Mayuri Boonham and Sculptor Jeff Lowe. Boonham's increasing abstraction of the dancers' figures creates an expressive boundary with Lowe's striking sculpture - a place where form and abstraction merge. Every second of choreography, every viewpoint of the relationship between the sculpture and the dancers becomes a flowing living sculpture. Erhebung is a dance-sonic-sculpture installation with two dancers. Inspired by T.S. Eliot's Burnt Norton, the work is devised in collaboration with a team of international artists that include the American Sound Artist Bill Fontana and .

Natyam dance under Prakash Yadagudde at the Bhavan Centre, Institute of Indian Fine and Culture, London. Drawing on such varied sources as her upbringing in multicultural Britain, and early participation in courses with masters from India, broad artistic influences and seminal projects with contemporary artists such as Jonathan Burrows, Russell Maliphant and Wayne McGregor, Mayuri's work speaks for the current generation of the Urban South Indian Contemporary experience. Mayuri redraws choreographic boundaries with her visionary approach to Bharata Natyam dance, pushing the classical South Asian art form into new conceptual territories. Mayuri founded her company AIMA Dance in 2009 after being the Cofounder, joint Artistic Director and Choreographer of Angika from 1997 -2008. She was Choreographer-in-Residence at The Place from 2004-2006. In September 2012 Mayuri was appointed a Royal Ballet Affiliate Choreographer.
