In leaps and bounds Step 3 Set specific goals
Tip: What is your goal? What do you want to be able to do with your English? You can’t learn everything, so be selective. Identify the situations and tasks in which you’ll need English. Knowing what you want and need will help you to get it and to stay motivated.
“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.” Henry Ford “If you don't know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else.” Lawrence J. Peter
Adult learning is goal-oriented learning, and motivation is the key to achieving your goals. Identify what your current level is and what you need to learn for yourself and your job. Set yourself realistic goals and express them positively: ―I want to sound confident.‖ Decide how much time you can devote to achieving your goals. Then organize a manageable timetable and stick to it. Evaluate yourself regularly and check your milestones. Accept that making progress means constant repetition and recycling. Practise as much as possible and make mistakes. Don’t be demotivated when you make mistakes; they are a natural part of the learning process as long as you allow enough time for self-reflection. And, it’s never too late to find out what type of learner you are (whether, for example, you learn through seeing, listening, reading or writing) so that you know how best to improve that learning ability. There are plenty of online tests that can help you to find out what your learning style is.
The Positive Mind: Psychology for Every Single Day 5 Types of Co-Workers The first day you walk into a workplace, you can’t help but notice how everyone seems to be a certain kind of character. And each character comes together in that place where everyone would rather not be to make this weird microcosmic stew. Needless to say, getting to know and getting along with your co-workers can be an interesting game. To help you out, I’ve provided the following guide to five common types of co-workers:
The Guffaw Their loud laughter carries over every surface, every cubicle wall, so strong and crisp it sounds like they could be right next to you. Interestingly, the laugh is usually disproportionately large in comparison with the actual joke told. Often, there is no joke told at all, and the laugh represents the Guffaw’s confusion, embarrassment, or lack of intelligent things to say. Although an effective ice breaker at first, the Guffaw’s laugh quickly becomes an annoyance to co-workers as they catch on to its seemingly illogical pattern and especially when they are having a bad day. The Guffaw can vary in its appearance. Many Guffaws wear a large grin that seems ready to burst with laughter. Oddly, other Guffaws wear an almost melancholy expression most of the time until presented with a joke, an embarrassing or confusing situation, or an opportunity to end a conversation quickly, at which time their gloomy countenance bursts into eerily lively laughter.
The Jester Every workplace needs one. Since ancient times, kings have included jokers in their courts for the purpose of lightening the mood. The modern workplace does the same. The Jester continues to serve a vital function in today’s organizations: to keep everyone from throttling each other. The Jester gets most people to loosen up. Especially during very stressful times, the Jester gets people laughing and being themselves, providing very necessary distractions. They’ve always got a joke, a controversial comment, a drawer full of gags, and a bunch of dirt on every co-worker, which they jovially put to use for the greater good of the workplace. The Jester creates an essential counter balance to the corporate drive to turn all employees into automatons.

Are you a respectful co-worker? Your office is probably full of different personalities. No matter where you work, or what you do, respecting your co-workers is an essential part of being a strong professional. Your team is there to support and guide you. But if you don't treat others with the respect they deserve, you'll end up struggling all alone. Believe me - a little bit goes a long way! You don't have to be a pushover. You just need to be considerate and appreciative of those around you. Think about it: would you want to work with yourself?
If you're not quite sure of the answer, take this quiz and see if you're a respectful co-worker. Instructions Read each statement and select an answer that best describes what you would do in the situation. You may not find one that describes you perfectly - so just choose the one that works best. 1. You're having a hectic morning at home and you know you're going to be late. Your co-workers will have to pick up the slack until you get there. You... A) Call as soon as you realize you'll be late. You apologize sincerely and let them know when to expect you. B) In all the chaos, you forget to call, which you know has probably upset your co-workers. You decide to stop and pick up some donuts on the way in - who can stay mad when you're arriving with treats? C) Know your co-workers are going to give you a hard time about being late so you don't bother calling. When you arrive, you walk them through every minute of your crazy morning - just so they know it was beyond your control. 2. Because of a mistake you made, your entire department has to stay late reworking a project. You... A) Make an effort to apologize to everyone directly, and then work especially hard to get the project completed quickly. B) Laugh it off - mistakes happen. It's best to keep the mood light and positive. C) Explain how the mistake was not really your fault. Why should you take all the blame for this? 3. Your office shares one supply closet that is always messy and disorganized. When you go to pick up some Post Its, you... A) Take a few minutes to tidy up and post a note on the door asking everyone to do the same. B) Ask one of the interns clean it up - after all, they're supposed to be learning all angles of business! C) Grab what you need and go. It's not your problem. 4. Your sister is going through a difficult break up. She is calling you at work looking for support and guidance, which is very distracting to your co-workers. You... A) Talk with her for a minute and then acknowledge that you are at work and not available to chat. You make arrangements to call her on your break. B) Whisper quietly at your desk. Your co-workers will never know. C) Chat as long as your sister needs. This is family after all. Your co-workers should understand. 5. One of your co-workers is overwhelmed and stressed out. She ends up snapping at you one day, which is completely out of character. You... A) Acknowledge that you know she is stressed and offer to help out. B) Wait for her to apologize - snapping at you was uncalled for. C) Snap right back. Sure, she's stressed. But that doesn't mean she can take it out on you!

Marshall Field's Sets Record for Largest Box of Chocolates The history-making 15' x 7' x 2' Frango box weighs 3,226 pounds and is on display at Chicago's Field Museum
Marshall Field's officially shattered the Guinness World Record for the Largest Box of Chocolates today at The Field Museum in Chicago. The oversized Frango Win A Mint box contained 2,002 one-pound boxes of Frango Mint chocolates. The Frango box was weighed on a commercial scale and authenticated by Stuart Claxton, a Guinness World Records researcher; Dennis O'Brien, a CPA and partner at Pasquesi Sheppard in Chicago; and Francis Patch, Director of Food Protection at the Chicago Department of Health. With the help of The Field Museum, currently running the Chocolate exhibition, Marshall Field's will have a chance to be featured in the Guinness Book of World Records. "On behalf of Guinness World Records, I am pleased to announce that Marshall Field's 2,002 pound Frango Win A Mint chocolate box has shattered the record for the World's Largest Box of Chocolates," says Stuart Claxton, Guinness World Records researcher. (Master Foods Middle East for the Dubai Shopping Festival set the prior world record, of 1,888 pounds, in March 2001.) The one-ton box of endorphins was unveiled in a ceremony complete with the official signing of a giant Guinness World Records certificate. The World's Largest Box of Chocolates kicks off the second year of the Marshall Field's Frango Win A Mint game, which ran through December 24. The 15' x 7' x 2' record-setting box is an exact replica of the Frango Win A Mint Box. It was on display at The Field Museum until Sunday, November 17. Starting November 18, the huge box was on display at the Marshall Field's State Street store in Chicago. The 2,002 pounds of Frango Mint chocolates were donated to Chicago area charities and non-profit organizations through the Chicago Cares organization. About the Frango Win A Mint Game: Now through December 24, Marshall Field's guests had the chance to find one of four instant-win game pieces in specially marked one-pound boxes of Frango Mints worth at least $10,000. shatter - разбить вдребезги; разрушить, уничтожить authenticate - заверять, свидетельствовать; устанавливать подлинность CPA от certified public accountant дипломированный бухгалтер (имеет право выступать в качестве независимого аудитора, бухгалтера-ревизора) run - проводить (бега, гонки, скачки и т.п.)

BigChilli Bed-time Stories "I don't mind. I want you to be happy here." He was looking ahead at the road when he said this. Charlie wasn't comfortable with expressing his emotions out loud. I inherited that from him. So I was looking straight ahead as I responded. "That's really nice, Dad. Thanks. I really appreciate it." No need to add that my being happy in Forks is an impossibility. He didn't need to suffer along with me. And I never looked a free truck in the mouth — or engine. "Well, now, you're welcome," he mumbled, embarrassed by my thanks. We exchanged a few more comments on the weather, which was wet, and that was pretty much it for Conversation. We stared out the windows in silence. It was beautiful, of course; I couldn't deny that. Everything was green: the trees, their trunks covered with moss, their branches hanging with a canopy of it, the ground covered with ferns. Even the air filtered down greenly through the leaves. It was too green — an alien planet. Eventually we made it to Charlie's. He still lived in the small, two-bedroom house that he'd bought with my mother in the early days of their marriage. Those were the only kind of days their marriage had — the early ones. There, parked on the street in front of the house that never changed, was my new — well, new to me — truck. It was a faded red color, with big, rounded fenders and a bulbous cab. To my intense surprise, I loved it. I didn't know if it would run, but I could see myself in it. Plus, it was one of those solid iron affairs that never gets damaged — the kind you see at the scene of an accident, paint unscratched, surrounded by the pieces of the foreign car it had destroyed. "Wow, Dad, I love it! Thanks!" Now my horrific day tomorrow would be just that much less dreadful. I wouldn't be faced with the choice of either walking two miles in the rain to school or accepting a ride in the Chief's cruiser. "I'm glad you like it," Charlie said gruffly, embarrassed again. It took only one trip to get all my stuff upstairs. I got the west bedroom That faced out over the front yard. The room was familiar; it had been belonged to me since I was born. The wooden floor, the light blue walls, the peaked ceiling, the yellowed lace curtains around the window — these were all a part of my childhood. The only changes Charlie had ever made were switching the crib fora bed and adding a desk as I grew. The desk now held a secondhand computer, with the phone line for the modem stapled along the floor to the nearest phone jack. This was a stipulation from my mother, so that we could stay in touch easily. The rocking chair from my baby days was still in the corner. There was only one small bathroom at the top of the stairs, which I would have to share with Charlie. I was trying not to dwell too much on that fact. One of the best things about Charlie is he doesn't hover. He left me alone to unpack and get settled, a feat that would have been altogether impossible for my mother. It was nice to be alone, not to have to smile and look pleased; a relief to stare dejectedly out the window at the sheeting rain and let just a few tears escape. I wasn't in the mood to go on a real crying jag. I would save that for bedtime, when I would have to think about the coming morning. Forks High School had a frightening total of only three hundred and fiftyseven— now fifty-eight — students; there were more than seven hundred people in my junior class alone back home. All of the kids here had grown up together — their grandparents had been toddlers together.

Answer to the riddle: Where does ―pelmeni‖ come from? Some people want pelmeni, others prefer dim sum. It would seem that there is nothing more Russian than pelmeni. Nevertheless, pelmeni came to Russian cuisine only in XVI century. There are several versions where exactly pelmeni comes from. I am personally in favour of Chinese version, according to which, progenitors of pelmeni are called dim sum. Dim sum, by the way, has perfectly settled down in Malaysia thanks to the Malaysian Chinese. I feel absolute indescribable love to dim sum, and there is not a situation when I could resist a small helping of these delicacies. Dim sum is a dish of Cantonese cuisine. In terms of Chinese language, dim sum means “to touch one’s heart” or ―to eat to one's heart's content‖. Treating with dim sum is a ritual itself, usually, separate from breakfast, lunch or dinner. In restaurants menu of dim sum appears on the tables from morning till lunchtime. Then, it is replaced with lunch menu. Variety of dim sum knows no bounds: You will be offered dumplings of all kinds of forms, colours and filling. Dim sum can be boiled or fried in oil, but the most favourite way is to cook it above steam in small bamboo-boxes. Paste for dim sum is made from rice or wheat flour and then it is rolled out in a very-very thin layer. It should be so thin that after being cooked over steam, paste becomes very soft and Dim-sum is cooked the same way as pelmeni. transparent, and filling can be seen through it. A small box usually contains three or four dim sums. You can come up to a counter and choose the kinds you like the most. They will be immediately sent to be cooked over steam and in a few minutes they will be brought right in a bamboo box to your table. Unlike more or less standard pelmeni, dim sum exists in endless variations. Rice paste is dyed in green, yellow, pink colours, and the dumpling itself is decorated with caviar granules, crab pieces, vegetables or eggs ―senchury‖. Stuffing can be most various: pork, chicken, duck, crab minced meat or vegetables. Filling is rarely from one ingredient only. As usual, it is a combination: stuffing and pieces of mushrooms, stuffing and pieces of shrimps, stuffing and vegetables. The usual situation is when four or five kinds of dim sum are ordered at one table at once. Among older generation of Malaysian Chinese, dim sum in the mornings after morning exercises is one of the most favourite tradiIt is easy to get dim-sum. They tions. And to gather the whole family for breakfast of dim sum on Sunday mornare available in any shop ing is a sacred affair. One doesn't need to go for dim sum to a specialized Chinese restaurant. Nowadays, dim sum is so popular that here, in Malaysia, it can be bought frozen in supermarkets or in 24hour stalls ―7-Eleven‖, where it is cooked immediately in microwave oven for You. In the evenings dim sum can be found in numerous Chinese cafes in a town or even in portable steam stalls that stand along the roads. Jalan Alor Street, which is near the center of Kuala Lumpur might not be a standard of wellbeing and safety, but here, in roadside cafes, truly incomparable dim sum is cooked! And for those, who still doubt about affinity of dim sum and pelmeni, here comes a photo from a booklet of culinary courses on cooking dim sum in Hong Kong. There are a lof of different kinds of dim-sum

How To Be An Action Learning Specialist? Hi! Cliff Bunning (1991) questioned: Why do some organizations which employ so many intelligent people continue with strategies which are obviously not working, or fail to take actions which are clearly called for, or repeat their mistakes, over and over? Why do some organizations put so much time and energy into not changing - into defending the past and avoiding the future?

Tattoo is one of the most ancient arts in the world. It hasn’t disappeared in spite of numerous critics on the part of different institutions and society. It says us that tattoo has something special, something that is not within power of interferences. As it hasn’t just born ordeal by time, but it has changed a lot, making itself fit the tastes of society. Now people relate to it more loyal, realizing that tattoo is not a sign of criminal nature or being branded, but an ancient art with its rules and principles. Tattoos have become very popular recently, and tattoo salons carry a good choice of them. A lot of people are not sure about what they really want, they often think they found they had been dreaming about, and thus they want to tattoo it as soon as possible. But the art of tattoo doesn’t stand hurrying up. And not long after, imagining how it would look on their own bodies, they turn it down. And then continue looking for other samples of tattoos and pictures. The history of tattoo The art of decorating oneself appeared very long time ago. People used clothes, accessories, make-up, adornments or hair-do for this purpose. All these served as self-expression. Researchers claim that even in the very ancient times people didn’t wear clothes without purpose, but to express themselves and to stand out. Nowadays tattoo is very popular all round the world and it gives a person opportunity to stand out in a crowd and it lets one express oneself. Statistics says only people with high ambitions can give their consent to tattoo them. It might be the reason why there are so many poets, singers, composers and other creative people who wear tattoos. In many countries workshops on the topic of tattoos and all sorts of things connected with them are held. Any willing person may glean experience from his\her colleagues, or share his\her own experience, or show his\her own works. How to make a choice There are people who have clear vision of what they want. But they meet another problem: it is difficult for them to find the sample they need in tattoo galleries, catalogues. There are different ways how to make a choice:

Jay Rayner “I work on the assumption that food – and, by association, the restaurants that serve it – has to be trying bloody hard to kill you. Eating is not something you need insurance for. So denying yourself an edible pleasure just because you couldn’t safely remove someone’s appendix in the room in which it was prepared, seems just plain foolish, not to mention self-defeating.” Rayner is the son of legendary UK advice columnist Claire Rayner and Desmond Rayner. When he graduated in 1988 he had political journalism in mind but, luckily for UK foodies, was put to work at The Observer as the restaurant critic instead. Jay Rayner is an award-winning writer, journalist and broadcaster. He is currently restaurant critic of The Observer, a national British Sunday newspaper, where he is their restaurant critic as well as a feature writer. He has written for a wide range of British newspapers and magazines such as GQ, Esquire, Cosmopolitan, the New Statesman and Granta. In 1992 he was named Young Journalist of the Year in the British Press Awards. His sarcastic wit and liberal use of lowbrow vocabulary (his reviews are studded with words like "bloody," "sodding" and "bollocks") have made him a well-known character in the world of British food media and a much feared critic. Jay is also the author of four novels and two works of nonfiction. His latest is The Man Who Ate The World, a non-fiction account of his pursuit of the perfect meal in the new breed of luxury restaurants that have spread around the globe. He is also a notorious meat lover. During a week-long experiment with veganism, Rayner wrote, “It’s not that I actively seek the death of an animal. But hell, a little light slaughter does seem to make things taste better.” Of the veganfriendly restaurant Saf he wrote that he was happy that vegans had places to go but then again he was also happy that “fully grown men who like to wear nappies and pretend to be babies have clubs they can go to indulge their desires, too.” The experiment only lasted five days before Rayner gave up and went back to a steady diet of “light slaughter.” How much sleep do you need? "I need about eight hours but, being the parent of a small boy, I don't always get it. I can survive on six." How do you feel first thing in the morning? "If I only got six hours, lousy. Otherwise I'm one of those irritatingly Tigerish people who likes to get to their desk by 8.30 am, mostly because I'm no use to anybody by the middle of the afternoon." What exercise do you take? "As I make part of my living as a restaurant critic, and as I already had a large behind before someone started paying me to eat, weight is a serious issue. I am a member of a gym and I try to go at least twice a week, but sometimes I just don't have the energy to get in the car and drive there. Generally I use step machines." Are you careful about what you eat? "I'm very careful. I make sure to eat everything. My wife complains that I never eat green vegetables, which is only partly true. I admit to never eating broccoli but that's because I don't class broccoli as food."
