ust 99 miles east of Los Angeles, our alpine island in the sky enjoys four distinct seasons, each offering an entirely new experience whenever you visit. Immerse yourself in the pleasures of vibrant autumn leaves, crystalline winter snows, rainbows of springtime wildflowers and the lake shimmering in summer as each season’s adventures delight.

Winter Hands down, Big Bear’s unparalleled trails and terrain parks at Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are havens for skiers and snowboarders. Between the two resorts enjoy 435 skiable acres, 26 lifts, four high-speed chairs, and more than 200 terrain features to ski or ride. But there’s more to Big Bear than its top-quality slopes. Strap on a pair of snowshoes or cross-country skis and venture into the snow-flocked forest, where you’ll brake only for the occasional squirrel crossing! In the Village, browse quaint boutiques and one-of-a-kind shops, then warm up with a mug of hot cocoa inside a cozy diner. Join the kids for classic winter fun sledding or tubing at designated snow play areas. Free your inner child making snow angels or building a snowman in front of your cabin. When the sun goes down, cozy up to a toasty fire as a fresh snowfall silently blankets the sleeping town.

about the gold-mining days and see how early Californians lived in the high country.

Summer Summer’s the time to chill out and soak up Big Bear Lake’s endless summer fun at its seven-mile lake, which features classic to cutting-edge aquatic sports. Water fun abounds from kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and parasailing to jet skiing and wakeboarding to lazy pontoon rides and supervised children’s swimming. Thrill seekers soon discover that Big Bear’s unique New Zealand-style Jet Boat rivals any theme park’s roller coaster. For an even milder, easy-breezy lake activity, come aboard the pirate ship or the paddlewheeler for a narrated tour of the history, Hollywood movie sets and celebrity homes of Big Bear, or catch a slow ride on the Scenic Sky Chair from the forest floor to the top of Snow Summit to treat your eyes to spectacular panoramic views. Hop back on the chair for the return ride, hike down, or venture out to mountain bike the trails. If kicking back is your style, long summer days are anything but boring in Big Bear Lake. Nearly every week,

concerts, festivals, car shows, and friendly outdoor competitions are held. If you’re pining for solitude though, head into the woods for a romantic picnic under the forest canopy, or relive Big Bear’s historic Old West on a sunset horseback ride.

Fall As Big Bear’s summer colors transform into russet hues, the air sharpens to crisp nights and golden days. Amid the vibrant evergreen trees are oaks, cottonwoods and aspens splashed in brilliant amber, yellow and pumpkincolored leaves. Bring your camera to capture autumn’s blazing beauty. The lake continues as the main attraction with fishing and boating activities. Rent a pontoon or let a fishing guide handle the messy work while you focus on reeling in plump trout and bass. Harvest time in Big Bear means picking from a bounty of fall festivities. The annual Oktoberfest kicks up a lively mood with brew, brats, competitions and dancing fun for the entire family. Big Bear Alpine Zoo takes visitors on exclusive nightime Flashlight Safari tours of the animals’ world in the dark.

Spring Hop into spring and embrace the sights and sounds of the pine-scented forest emerging from its snowy winter wrap. We promise that outdoor fun doesn’t melt with the snow: springtime forests come alive with birds chirping and kaleidoscopes of wildflowers blooming alongside alpine and lakeside walking, hiking and biking trails. Bring your tackle because springtime’s ideal conditions bring in the big catches! Trout and bass gulp just about anything in their paths after the long winter’s rest, making for great fishing for everyone from tykes to seasoned fishermen. For a little adventure, try off-roading on a guided jeep tour to the spectacular and historic backcountry. Hear stories 2013 OFFICIAL VISITORS GUIDE

Winter bliss.

LET IT SNOW.

LET IT SNOW,

S

tep into our enchanted winter wonderland and awaken your childlike wonder from its own hibernation. The forest becomes blanketed in fresh powder and the azure of the lake rimmed in snow, the Village becomes resplendent in its winter white, and visitors and locals alike wear ear to ear smiles like a gingerbread man. It’s magical here in Big Bear Lake. Skiers and snowboarders can catch big air and magnificent views while cruising Big Bear’s pristine network of groomed powder trails. From your first step onto the chairlift, time stands still as you get in as many runs as possible before the sun sets. There’s a world of frosty fun beyond the slopes, too! Pack a picnic lunch (think hearty sandwiches and hot chocolate) and trek on snowshoes or cross-country with family and friends on trails valley-wide. With the snowy ground as your easel, be the first to make snow angels or build a snowman. You may even discover more than your own snowshoe prints, as the forest abounds with deer, squirrels, foxes, and raccoons, too. For over-the-top outdoor fun, take flight on a zipline high above the forest floor or race inner tubes in snow play areas where you can bank on plenty of the white stuff. Your kids will fill the air with laughter and beg for more.

Perhaps your idea of enjoying the great outdoors is from the warm indoors. Mosey over to a cozy Big Bear restaurant, get a window table and a hot toddy, and watch the scene outside that is reminiscent of a Norman Rockwell painting. Back in your cabin or condo, gather around a crackling fire and play games, read, or snooze.

Welcome to Cloud 9 At the tops of Snow Summit and Bear Mountain, you are transported to a wintry snow globe surrounded by views of sugary white-capped mountains and glistening lake views below. The time has come to conquer

the slopes! Whether it’s your first run of the day or 20th, you are bound for a dose of adrenaline! Anticipation builds as you chart your course down the mountain, with numerous well-marked runs snaking in all directions. The cool thing is that no matter what your ski or snowboard level, there’s a way down on easy groomers or through challenging bowls and chutes. So adjust your boots and bindings, chow down that energy bar, and push off down the mountain for a rush sure to bring a smile to your face and passion pumping through your veins, finding your rhythm on a perfect run to the bottom.

Whether you choose to play on the lake or just view it from atop an overlooking vista, its magnificence will automatically draw you in. The lake is stuffed to the gills with trout, bass, and catfish. It’s easy to get hooked on the great fishing dawn to dusk. If adventure on the water is what you seek, then you’re in for a treat. Just about every mainstream aquatic sport happens here, from motorized boats to people-powered kayaks and canoes. There are even some activities on the cutting edge, like New Zealandstyle jet boat rides and the Cable Wakeboard Park. Along the 22 miles of shoreline, several marinas provide all the gear you need to navigate your way on water. There’s plenty of action in town, too. Stop by for weekly and seasonal events and festivals, like the Cowboy Gathering, Antique Auto Show, Big Bear Renaissance Faire, and Art on the Lake. With so much to see and do, there

are numerous reasons to visit each and every season. Consider it an open invitation to have your fun in the sun.

Gateway to Adventure and Discovery The Big Bear Discovery Center is an educational and informational portal to the San Bernardino National Forest and is located within the heart of the Big Bear Valley. Its goal is to create awareness and teach you to become a more responsible caretaker of a national forest while increasing your enjoyment and knowledge of the great outdoors. Services include providing Adventure Passes, maps for hiking and biking and off-roading, camping information, and Forest Service permits. The Center offers naturalist-led interpretive tours such as snowshoe tours and bald eagle celebrations in the winter and Pacific Crest Trail hiking tours and Big Bear Lake canoe tours in the summer. T

he combination of a cool alpine lake, surrounding lush forests, and approximately 320 days of sunshine per year is a magnetic force that lures you to Big Bear spring, summer, and fall. Once Old Man Winter packs it in, the sun warms up the mountains, days become longer, and outdoor recreation blossoms! A walk or bike ride through the forest brings you face to face with colorful wildflowers and nature’s intoxicating, woodsy fragrance. Chattering squirrels and chirping birds bring the forest to life. You might even catch a glimpse of a deer darting through the trees. If you plan to take a trip with your significant other, swaying pine and oak trees provide a romantic canopy as you bask in conversation and share a private picnic for two. If you have children, introduce them to a real 3-D adventure they can grasp. The fresh mountain air will stimulate your kids’ senses as they scout out animal tracks along the trails. Imaginations run wild as shrubs and tree logs become forts and rocks become gems worthy of being stuffed into pockets.

Some of the finest freshwater fishing in California can be found in Big Bear Lake. There is an abundance of trout, bass, catfish, and blue gill to be caught. Big Bear Lake is also well known as a good trolling lake. You will need to have a fishing license, which can be purchased at sporting goods stores and marinas.

A number of picnic areas surround the lake. Bring your favorite sandwich and enjoy the day! S.S. Relief: Floating restrooms.

your head? Not much. When it comes to rest and relaxation in Big Bear Lake, there’s really not much to it. In today’s hectic world the best thing you can do is take a time-out and just chill. The mountains are 180 degrees opposite to the city. This is a world of serenity, solitude, and tranquility. Maybe you want to dip your toes in the lake, feed the ducks, and watch the sailboats drift by. Maybe you want to take a boat onto the lake and go with the flow. Maybe an afternoon nap on the porch looking at the trees and clear skies is what you need. Make it simple

hat’s better than lounging on your cabin’s deck, soaking up rays, feeding your nose with pine-scented aromas, and listening to the natural music of chirping birds? Not much. What’s better than being in your slippers and bathrobe with a cup of hot java, curled up next to a crackling fire reading the latest best-seller? Not much. What’s better than sitting in a steamy outdoor Jacuzzi frothing with bubbles, a glass of pinot noir in your hand, and snowflakes gently falling on

and let the warmth of the sun and coolness of the freshwater lake blend together to soothe your mind and soul.

Four Seasons to Unwind It doesn’t matter what time of year you visit Big Bear Lake because nature is always here to comfort you. In the spring, brightly colored flowers blossom, the lake sparkles like an engagement ring, birds whistle beautiful songs, and sunsets glow. Summertime is like a Zen master who will teach you how to appreciate the finer things in life. Come autumn, you’ll find bliss while surrounded by fluttering golden and auburn leaves. Daytime temperatures are mildly to moderately perfect for an afternoon walk in the woods, and at night there’s nothing like snuggling under a down comforter with your favorite warm beverage. In winter it’s a given that wood-burning fireplaces are the heart of cabins and lodges. Just peek outside, and you’ll see smoky chimneys up and down the street.

Spice up your wedding photo collection and capture the essence of enjoyment! Once your wedding is over, you have the choice to either pack away your wedding dress smothered in a plastic bag in your closet, or you can really shine and have fun with it! After your wedding day, put your dress back on to take part of a worldwide phenomenon known as “Trash the Dress.” There is no better place in Southern California to trash the dress than Big Bear Lake, with a wide range of terrain that includes a freshwater lake to take a dip or reel in a fish; snow-capped slopes to charge the mountain on skis, snowboard or sled; granite crags for some rock climbing; or backcountry forest service roads for ATV adventure. There are hiking trails, lush meadows, horse stables, and more. Big Bear provides the visual aid with stunning backdrops. Now it’s up to you and your photographer to dream up the most memorable photos that depict who you really are. Go on—trash the dress in Big Bear—it’s fun, and it creates a lasting impression that you can showcase on your wall forever. As a convenience, some of Big Bear’s wedding venues have teamed up with local photographers to create special Trash the Dress packages.

Groups, Meetings and Special Occasions For your next special occasion, let pine-scented forests, crystal-clear skies, lush meadows, and mountain vistas work in your favor as the visual aid. There’s no scientific explanation for the way Big Bear Lake refreshes the human spirit. Whether it’s a church retreat, corporate meeting, or family reunion, you’ll notice how everyone in your party tunes in with each other in this beautiful slice of heaven.

Group Meeting Facilities Please visit BigBear.com/event facilities for a complete list of meeting locations and group facilities.

Teams Unite in the Great Outdoors Big Bear’s outdoor arena, at an altitude of 7,000 feet, provides the perfect location for you and your team to reach

new heights. The natural beauty of Big Bear Lake and a wide range of outdoor activities are unsurpassed anywhere else in Southern California. Our team-building programs help you achieve your goals of building morale, improving focus, and developing leadership. Programs are custom designed by professional organizations with years of real world experience, helping your team find its natural direction. Activities to unite your organization include high-adventure ropes courses, classroom based corporate development, kayaking excursions, mountain bike trips, and ziplining.

T

he natural alpine scenery that surrounds Big Bear Lake—from lakeside to the mountaintops— creates stunning backdrops GPS FWFOUT XIJDI FYQMBJOT XIZ TP many events are held each year at this mountain resort. Each weekend you can count on something happening in Big Bear Valley, whether it’s the call of brass horns, the cadence of thumping drums, the electric twang of a steel guitar, or harmonious voices of a theatrical chorus line. It might be lively characters in 16th-Century costumes causing a mighty stir, or it could be a troupe of tiny tots dressed in lederhosen and dirndls prancing around to polka music, or perhaps it’s a cowboy posse gathered around a campfire telling original stories, keeping the audience spellbound. One thing for certain is the folks of Big Bear know how to entertain. Guests can find out what’s happening around town 24/7 with a calendar of events readily available online or on a mobile device at www.BigBear.com.

Get This Party Started! Just what kind of mood are you in? Whatever it is, you better be ready for some good times, because once the sun goes down, the fun continues in Big Bear Lake. Maybe you’re in the mood to just lounge around at Big Bear Mountain Brewery with a group of friends to sip a brew and laugh at all the funny things that happened on the slopes; maybe you feel like a game of shuffleboard, ping-pong, or darts at Nottinghams’ upstairs pub. You might want to catch the big game at Diamond Lil’s or just stop by for happy-hour specials. There’s always a party at The Bowling Barn, which offers glow bowling every night, a full-service bar, arcade, and billiards. There’s plenty for the youngsters to do at the Funplex such as laser tag, video games, and a mini rollercoaster. f some friends told you they had just spent a fun-filled weekend at popular Southern California resort called Yuhaviat, you probably wouldn’t know what they were talking about. Yuhaviat is a Serrano Indian word that means “Pine Place,” and it was Big Bear Valley’s name for more than a thousand years. In 1845, Benjamin Davis Wilson rode into Yuhaviat Valley with a posse of 20 men. They were chasing Indians who had been raiding their ranches in Riverside. As they entered the valley, they found it swarming with grizzlies. That’s not a misprint, indeed they were grizzly bears! Wilson divided his men into twoman teams. Each team went out, roped a bear, and brought it back to camp. They had eleven bears at the camp at the same time. This prompted Wilson to come up with the name Big Bear Lake. However, it should be noted that Big Bear Lake is a man-made lake that didn’t exist in 1845. The lake Wilson named Big Bear was actually the natural lake at the east end of the valley, now known as Baldwin Lake.

Quite a “Rich” History Big Bear Lake was once a gold-mining mecca before it became a popular fourseason resort. In 1860, a bear hunter named William Holcomb discovered gold in the backcountry after tracking

a bear’s blood trail to a creek filled with flakes of gold. He tried to keep it a secret, but word soon spread, and Southern California’s largest gold rush was on! From 1860 to about 1875 the area was teeming with prospectors. Today, only a few relics and structures from the Gold Rush days remain. Big Bear Off-Road Adventures offers gold-mining tours all year round. Big Bear Discovery Center offers tours in the summer and provides selfguided-tour brochures for folks who want to venture out on their own. Visitors will see actual remnants of gold mines and learn about several sites of interest.

More Historic Facts Big Bear’s first dam, completed in 1884, was soon followed by the Valley’s first hotel in 1888. In 1949 the first ski resort opened, and sure enough, Big Bear Lake became Southern California’s favorite mountain getaway.
