HISTORY
Big Bear Through the Years
From the Gold Rush to snow resorts, Big Bear boasts a storied past.
GOLD IS FOUND IN BIG BEAR In 1855, early settlers in Big Bear Valley discovered gold. A few years later, the first recorded mining operation began at Starvation Flats, near what is now the intersection of Division and Big Bear Boulevards.

1911–1925: HOLLYWOOD DISCOVERS BIG BEAR
1888–1911
With its scenic vistas of majestic mountains and tranquil forests, Big Bear Valley became an attractive backlot for the burgeoning film industry in nearby Los Angeles, driving a surge of tourism to the area.
THE BEGINNING OF A RESORT TOWN As a sign of the times to come, the Valley’s first resort lodging, the Bear Valley Hotel, opened its doors. New roads increased access to the Valley as well; in 1908, the first roundtrip through the mountains by automobile was completed in 13 hours and 17 minutes — a breakneck pace at the time.
HOLLYWOOD’S NATURAL BACKLOT Since its founding, Big Bear Valley has been no stranger to the silver screen. The region was featured in classics such as Heidi (starring Shirley Temple) and Gone with the Wind, and the Valley became a favorite destination for movie stars looking to escape the glitz and glam of Hollywood. Today, Big Bear Valley continues to serve as a scenic backdrop for hit films and TV shows, including Grey’s Anatomy and The Bachelorette. Catch sights of locations from some of your favorite movies and shows, or discover a production in action — and if you’re lucky, you just might spot a famous face or two.
1883
1860–1879: THE GOLD RUSH In 1860, a bear hunter named William Holcomb found gold in the backcountry after tracking a bear’s trail to a creek filled with flakes of gold. News of the discovery spread, and Southern California’s largest gold rush was on.
BIG BEAR LAKE IS BORN To supply citrus farms in Redlands with water, Frank Brown began construction on a dam across the Valley, creating a reservoir that became Big Bear Lake.
SAN BERNADINO COUNTY MUSEUM; SHUTTERSTOCK.COM; BIG BEAR VISITOR BUREAU
THE PIONEERS In pursuit of outlaws who had been raiding ranches in Riverside, Benjamin Wilson led a posse into the mountains. Once they reached the top of the mountain range, Wilson and his team found a valley swarming with grizzly bears, inspiring the moniker of Big Bear Valley.
1855 – 1859
SAN BERNADINO COUNTY MUSEUM (2); SHUTTERSTOCK.COM (2)
PRE-1840: THE NATIVES The first known inhabitants of Big Bear were the Yuhaviat (meaning “people of the pines”), who have lived in the Big Bear region for thousands of years.
1928–1949: THE (WINTER) FUN BEGINS The first winter facilities were constructed in 1928, when a ski jump competition was held just west of Big Bear Village. In 1938, a toboggan run and sling lift were developed behind the Village. The 1930s and ’40s saw an explosion in tourism as people flocked to the area to ski, and the first ski resort was built in 1949.
1958–1961: SNOW DAY! Hoping to extend the winter season, nearby Rebel Ridge Ski Area began experimenting with snowmaking technology. In 1961, Snow Summit was the first Big Bear resort to use the new advancements, churning up snow created from Big Bear Lake’s water supply.
In the late 1980s, snowboarding exploded on the winter scene, and Big Bear’s ski resorts became early adopters of the new sport. Snow Summit and Bear Mountain would serve as training grounds for some of snowboarding’s biggest stars, including Olympic gold medalist Shaun White. Fittingly, Big Bear would host the first ever Winter X Games in 1997.
1998: BIG BEAR DISCOVERY CENTER
Co-managed by the Southern California Mountains Foundation and the U.S. Forest Service, the center operated as a steward for the San Bernardino National Forest. Today, it services more than 190,000 annual visitors looking to explore this pristine landscape.
1988 – 1997
2002
SNOWY PARADISE Snow Summit acquired Bear Mountain and became Big Bear Mountain Resorts, creating an unparalleled mountain experience for skiers and snowboarders.
MOVING ON UP In 2014, Mammoth Mountain Resorts purchased Big Bear Mountain Resorts, consolidating the four major ski resorts in the area; three years later, Mammoth Mountain Resorts was acquired as part of what would become Alterra Mountain Company, a resort company boasting 15 destinations across the U.S. The annual IKON pass gives adventurers access to all 15 destinations, including 23 ski resorts.

SNOWSHOE SOLITUDE Whether you’re a backcountry explorer or a hesitant newcomer, snowshoeing is an ideal activity for all levels. Slowly work your way through the quiet backwoods of Big Bear to witness untouched beauty, or get your heart pumping with a brisk romp through some serious powder. Learn more about the mountain’s unique environment with a guided tour with Big Bear Discovery Center or Action Tours. WINTERTIME PEDALS Who says you can’t bike in the snow? For a cruise around
town or a challenging spin down snow-covered backroads, rent a fat-tire bike from Bear Valley Bikes. Also known as fat bikes, these two-wheelers are fitted with oversized tires to ride on soft, unstable terrain, so you can rest assured that your snowy cycling experience will be made easier. TUBULAR SLOPES From kids to teens to adults, tubing is entertaining for everyone. Make your way up the magic carpet before racing each other down the slope on colorful inner tubes. Big Bear has three tubing areas (Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain, Big Bear Snow Play, and Grizzly Ridge Tube Park), each with its own unique downhill courses. On Friday, Saturday, and holidays, Alpine Slide and Big Bear Snow Play offer glow tubing for some nighttime sledding.
1. STAY OFF BIG BEAR LAKE: The lake’s ice is extremely thin and not suitable for walking. Violators may be fined. Don’t put your life at risk! 2. CARRY CHAINS: It’s the law. Keep chains in your trunk from November to March and pull off to the side of the road completely to put them on. 3. DON’T FORGET YOUR KITTY LITTER: Bring a shovel and kitty litter to get out of icy situations. 4. APPLY SUNSCREEN: At 6,700 feet elevation and with more than 300 days of sunshine, it’s easy to get burned in Big Bear. Put on sunscreen and reapply often. 5. MORE H2O: You get dehydrated faster in higher altitude, so bring a reusable water bottle.

trail etiquette TIPS for visitors
HELP PRESERVE THE AREA’S NATURAL BEAUTY. As an active participant in the Leave No Trace initiative, Big Bear asks all visitors to keep their impact to a minimum. LEAVE WHAT YOU FIND Leave rocks, plants, and other natural objects as you find them, and don’t touch any cultural or historic structures and artifacts you may come across.
INTO THE WOODS
During spring, summer, and fall, the region turns into a must-visit destination overflowing with recreational diversions. Whether you’re a nature lover, adventure seeker, or adrenaline junkie, head to the woods for an epic experience. Hike the trails in Big Bear Lake.
RESPECT THE WILDLIFE Do not approach or follow animals, and do not feed them — feeding wildlife can put their health at risk, alter natural behavior, and expose them to predators or danger. BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS Let everyone enjoy their time in the great outdoors. Keep loud voices and noises to a minimum, yield to other hikers, and step to the downhill side of the trail when encountering other groups.

We begin with breakfast at Amangela’s Sandwich & Bagel House, where the breakfast bagel — topped with a whopping three eggs and a choice of ham, bacon, or veggie sausage — is exactly the kind of fuel you’ll need for an unforgettable day in the snow. Stop by Goldsmith’s Sports to pick up the essentials for skiing or snowboarding (you can also rent gear at the ski resorts). If you’re an experienced ripper, take advantage of the store’s expert boot-fitting; if you’re a beginner, the helpful staff will get you set up to enjoy the slopes. ig Bear is Southern California’s favorite outdoors getaway — and just a short drive from Los Angeles, it’s the perfect spot for a three-day weekend. So, if you’re normally a winter visitor, or you’ve never been at all, check out our suggestions for great ways to spend a long weekend all year-round.

level. If your tyke needs a little instruction, sign up for ski and snowboard lessons at Adventure Academy, located at the base of both mountains. After your day on the mountain, refuel at The Bone Yard Bar & Grill, which offers over 40 brews on tap to pair with American fare. DAY 2: It’s easy to spend the whole weekend on the slopes, but if you’re looking for a different way to play in the snow, then take a hike! Big Bear Discovery Center and Action Tours offer hasslefree guided tours (equipment provided) into areas of wilderness inaccessible by ski or snowboard. For bike enthusiasts, consider renting a fat tire bike from Bear Valley Bikes. You might not clock up many miles, but the thrill of a snowy ride can’t be beat. After an active morning, grab a quick lunch at Dynasty, where tasty Chinese cuisine will warm you up for another few hours of fun in the cold. Try not to eat too much, though, because a trip to Big Bear Snowplay is in order. Featuring some of the longest tubing runs in the state, it’s perfect for the whole family to rocket down the ramps. (Tip: Stick around for “glow tubing” in the evening, or hit the slopes for some night skiing.) If you’d rather see your frozen water in the bottom of a glass, check out the excellent local nightlife. The Cave, Wyatt’s Saloon & Grill, and Big Bear Lake Brewing Company are all great spots to sip some cold brews and catch live music.

When the weather is nice, grab a sandwich from Amangela’s and enjoy a lakeside picnic. If it’s chilly, head to Himalayan Restaurant for authentic flavors of Nepal, Tibet, and northern India served in a relaxed setting. Summer fun DAY 1: With clear blue skies, Big Bear in the summertime is the top choice to escape the heat, with average daytime temperatures hovering around 78 degrees from June through August. Cool off with some water fun: Zoom down water slides at Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain, or stroll down to the lake and splash around with the family in the refreshing lake waters. For the most fun for your buck, check out Big Bear Watersports School. Offering one-hour, three-hour, and six-hour packages, the charter boat service

Grab dinner at the bowling alley, or go next door to Sweet Basil Bistro for light Italian meals perfect for a hot day. DAY 2: After a fun-packed day, it’s time to relax. Enjoy a leisurely game of golf at Big Bear Mountain Resort’s nine-hole course, where the majestic San Bernardino Mountains serve as an idyllic backdrop, or play under the stars with a round of glow golf. Afterwards, enjoy the wild side of the valley at Big Bear Alpine Zoo, a wildlife rehabilitation center featuring some of the region’s native species, including grizzly
bears and bald eagles. Top off your day with a savory dinner of seafood and steak at Captain’s Anchorage. DAY 3: Big Bear is the perfect place to experience the great outdoors. Thrill seekers will love the mountain bike trails at Snow Summit that vary from familyfriendly to hardcore terrain. For the more faint of heart, explore one of Big Bear’s many iconic hiking trails instead. Looking for that perfect Instagram shot?
