Insider’s Guide to Big Bear Lake Easy access points to the Pacific Crest Trail One of the best hiking trails in Big Bear Valley is the world-famous Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Approximately 39 miles of the PCT traverses through the Big Bear area, and there are several different areas to access this classic trail. Each section of the PCT in Big Bear Valley is mostly level with some climbs, and just a few steeps. The hikes are suitable for all skill levels, and best of all provide some of the greatest scenic views. The easiest access point to the PCT is off Highway 18 at Cushenbury Grade on the way to Lucerne Valley. Just a half-mile east of Baldwin Lake is a spacious turnout on the south side of the road, and across the road, on the north side, is a smaller turnout. Whether you choose to hike eastward or westward, you’ll get a well-maintained trail with plenty of great views. There is a portion of the trail that snakes along the rim of the mountain that overlooks the vast Mojave Desert. Other access points are found off Highway 38 on the north shore at Van Dusen Canyon Rd. (3N09) and at Polique Canyon Rd. (2N09). Parking is less convenient, but does offer more adventurous hiking. Hikers can also choose to start at the base of Cougar Crest Trail, which ascends to the PCT.

A vacation that sweeps you off your feet (literally) Can a vacation really sweep someone off his or her feet? Some destinations may claim to, but only figuratively. In Big Bear Lake vacationers are swept off their feet, literally. During the summer months Big Bear offers not one, not two, but three different ways to suspend visitors high above the Earth with nothing but air beneath their feet. Guests who want to add an extra boost above Big Bear’s already high elevation can go ziplining, parasailing, or ride the Scenic Sky Chair. Ziplining is the ultimate gravity defying adventure, where participants zip through forested landscapes and cross over rocky canyons to experience the sensation of flying. Big Bear Lake is the only freshwater lake in Southern California that offers parasailing. At 7,000 ft., parasailing is a one-of-kind experience that allows flyers to see Big Bear Valley’s immense beauty from a bird’s perspective. In the summertime, Snow Summit’s East Mountain Express chairlift transforms into the Scenic Sky Chair. Guests are whisked away, leaving their feet to dangle over the forest floor on a leisure 15-minute ride to the top Snow Summit. It only takes a day or two on the playing grounds of Big Bear to literally get swept off your feet.

Gold Fever Trail (a self-guided tour)
Big Bear Valley was once a gold mining mecca before it became a popular four-season resort. In 1860, a bear hunter named William Holcomb discovered gold in the backcountry after tracking a bear’s blood trail to a creek filled with flakes of gold. He tried to keep it a secret, but soon enough word got out and Southern California’s largest gold rush was on! From 1860 to about 1875 the area was swarming with prospectors. All that remains today are some relics and structures from the days of yore. Big Bear Discovery Center provides a self-guided brochure called Gold Fever Trail, which encompasses the Holcomb Valley. The Gold Fever Trail is ideal for folks who want to venture out on their own to relive the gold rush. Visitors will see actual remnants of the gold mining days and learn about certain points of interest such as Metzger Mine, Lucky Baldwin Mine (pictured above), Two Gun Bill’s Saloon, Hangman’s Tree, an arrastre (gold ore grinder), a pygmy cabin site and Ross’ Grave. Visitors can extend their gold rush experience by visiting the Big Bear Valley Historical Museum on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays during the summer months.
Family fun after dark Just because the sun goes down doesn’t mean the good times have to stop. In fact, Big Bear offers a variety of options for families to continue having fun after dark. During the wintertime, there are three options for tubing under the lights. Big Bear Snow Play lights up like a rock concert with a unique experience called glow tubing. The spectrum of colors adds another dimension to the amusement. Night tubing also happens at Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain with traditional ballpark-style lighting. Both locations offer tubing Fridays, Saturdays and holiday nights. More tubing under the lights is at Snow Summit’s Grizzly Ridge Tube Park. This tubing area has extended night sessions on select dates. Of course, Snow Summit is a great option to ski or snowboard under the stars. Once the holiday season kicks into gear, so do the lights at Snow Summit every Friday, Saturday and holiday night. High-powered lights illuminate Summit Run, Miracle Mile and Westridge Park. During the warmer months, Big Bear Jeep Experience offers a far-from-ordinary off-road tour when it flips its off-road lights on to conquer rock crawling after the sun goes down. Families looking for nighttime fun indoors should head over to The Bowing Barn for glow bowling, which is offered every night and has bumper bowling for youngsters. Mountain Room Escapes has kid-friendly escape room games and virtual reality every evening.

ALPINE PEDAL PATH
2.5 miles, very easy An asphalt path that wanders along the north shore of Big Bear Lake. Easily accessible for hikers, bikers, skaters, joggers, strollers and wheelchairs. It starts at Stanfield Cutoff and ends at the Solar Observatory.
2 WOODLAND TRAIL
1.5 mile loop, easy A unique nature trail with 20 posted stops. Pick up a pamphlet at the entrance and take the self-guided tour where you will learn about botany, geology and the wildlife of this woodland area. You can leave your car in the parking lot if it exhibits an Adventure Pass.
3 CHAMPION LODGEPOLE PINE TRAIL
.6 mile round-trip, easy The Lodgepole Pine Trail is on the south side of the lake and is a gentle walk down a path along a stream; ending up at the Champion Lodgepole Pine, one of the largest known lodgepoles in the world. Begin by driving up Mill Creek Road (Forest Road 2N10-dirt road) for 4.5 miles, turn right on 2N11 and continue one mile to the trailhead.
4 CASTLE ROCK TRAIL
2.4 miles round-trip, moderate Castle Rock Trail is one of Big Bear’s most popular trails. The trail begins one mile east of Big Bear Dam on Hwy. 18. On the south side of Hwy. 18 is a small brown sign that marks the trailhead. Park at the turnout along Hwy. 18. The elevation gain is 500’, making it a steep climb for the first .5 miles. The well-marked trail levels out for another .7 miles. At the top is an impressive granite rock outcropping providing 360º panoramic views.

PINE KNOT TRAIL
6 miles round-trip, moderate Hikers begin at the base of Aspen Glen Picnic Area, just south of Mill Creek Road. The trail meanders through stands of white fir and Jeffery pine. The trail leads to Grand View Point, altitude 7,784’. Avid hikers make the round trip hike in three hours or less. Mountain bikers take the Scenic Sky Chair to 2N10 west to 1E01 for a thrilling single track experience.
6 COUGAR CREST TRAIL
4-5.5 miles, moderate to difficult Starts .6 miles west of the Discovery Center on Hwy. 38. You will need an Adventure Pass to park in the trailhead parking area. On the trail you will walk through a wide variety of natural environments. The first mile is a gentle uphill climb, but after a mile or so you will realize you are gaining altitude. The Cougar Crest Trail ends at the junction of the world-famous 2,600-mile long Pacific Crest Trail.

13 miles, intermediate This trail starts with a short paved climb from the Fawnskin fire station up to 3N14. Continue 2.5 miles to Hanna Flat campground. From there, Grout Bay Trail starts at the back of the campsite and starts climbing. The trail climbs and descends, ending your ride back in Fawnskin.
9 JOHN BULL LOOP BIKE TRAIL
Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail Interpretive Trailhead Watchable Wildlife
14.9 miles, advanced to expert You’ll need stamina and basic navigation skills for this loop. Start at Van Dusen Canyon Rd. (3N09) and ride up 3.5 miles to Holcomb Valley to 3N16 turn left, to 3N07 turn right, to 3N43 turn left to “The John Bull Trail” (3N10). It’s about 3 miles of technical riding before you come to 3N32; turn right to 3N16; take another right at 3N09, which will lead you back to your starting point.

Access the trail on the east end where the pavement ends on Club View Drive, and on the west end just past the junction of 2N10 and 2N17.

WATERFRONT ACTIVITIES MAP Some of the finest freshwater fishing in California can be found in Big Bear Lake. There is an abundance of trout, bass, catfish, and blue gill to be caught. Big Bear Lake is also well known as a good trolling lake. You will need a fishing license, which can be purchased at sporting goods stores and marinas. You can rent a variety of boats, from pontoon, fishing, sail and speed boats to canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and paddle boats, or take a lake tour and enjoy a day in the sun at any one of the many marinas that surround Big Bear Lake’s 22 miles of shoreline. Permits are required for private boats and can be purchased at any marina.

There are multiple fishing charter services on the lake that offer expert knowledge, advice and techniques on how to catch trout and bass, and of course inside tips on where the fish are biting. Water-skiing, windsurfing, wakeboarding, parasailing and jet skiing can all be enjoyed on Big Bear Lake. Arrangements can be made at many of the marinas. Public boat launch ramp. The U.S. Forest Service offers tent camping in its National Forest campgrounds. RV camping is also available in the valley. Call 800-424-4232 for more information on RV parks. Make your next trip to Big Bear a breeze by visiting the Big Bear Visitors Center, located in the heart of the Village. This one-stop information center is your answer for where to eat, shop and play. Plus, it has up-to-date info about events and what’s happening in town. Here you’ll find free literature and brochures from various lodges, restaurants, shops, recreation, services and attractions. Pick up maps and guidebooks that’ll help you get around town, on the lake, or on the trails. The Center also sells day-use Adventure Passes for access to the wilderness. Get up-to-the minute weather reports and road conditions, too. The best aspect of the Visitors Center is there is a friendly, knowledgeable Big Bear local on-site to assist you. It’s like having your very own Siri or Alexa at your service, but in person, and with that special human touch, of course. The Visitors Center, located at 630 Bartlett Rd. (in the Village), is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. Also, the Visitors Center parking area offers free Wi-Fi, 24-hours a day, where you can log onto BigBear.com for more insight.

The Natives Yuhaviat People of the Pines The first known inhabitants of Big Bear are the Yuhaviat, a Serrano Indian word that means “People of the Pines.” These Native Americans have dwelled here for thousands of years.
1855-1859 Early Gold Gold is found in Big Bear Valley in 1855. By 1859, the first recorded mining is underway at Starvation Flats, near what is now the intersection of Division and Big Bear boulevards.

Big Bear Builds a Dam and Creates a Lake
Grizzly Bears Disappear
Frank Brown begins construction on a dam across the Valley to capture water in a reservoir to supply citrus farms in Redlands. The dam was 300 feet long, 60 feet high and held 25,000 acre feet of water. Water began flowing in 1885.
Due to unregulated hunting, the grizzly bear’s native population was killed off.
1845 Explorers Arrive Benjamin Wilson led a posse to search for outlaws who had been raiding ranches in Riverside. Their search led them into the mountains. Once they reached the top of the mountain range they found the valley was swarming with grizzly bears, which is how Big Bear Valley earned its name.

The Valley’s first resort lodging, the Bear Valley Hotel is opened. In 1908, the first circular trip through the mountains in an automobile was made and was completed in an amazing, 13 hours and 17 minutes. In 1911, construction is completed on a new dam, replacing the old rock dam and tripling the amount of water stored in the lake.
The Gold Rush In 1860, a bear hunter named William Holcomb discovered gold in the backcountry after tracking the bear’s blood trail to a creek filled with flakes of gold. Soon enough, Southern California’s largest gold rush was on. 800.424.4232

2017-2018 1911-1925 Tourism Escalates as the Film Industry Discovers Big Bear The fledging film industry discovered Big Bear as an inexpensive place to make films. By 1914, the Crest Highway was completed. By 1925, better roads and transportation helped increase a surge in cabins, resorts and campsites. The booming automobile industry and established highways paved the way for Hollywood’s natural back lot. See details to the right.
Alterra Mountain Company In April 2017, Colorado-based Aspen Skiing Co. and KSL Capital Partners purchase Mammoth Resorts, and in 2018 a joint venture of affiliates of KSL Capital Partners and Henry Crown and Company creates Alterra Mountain Company, which is comprised of 12 destinations that include Big Bear Mountain Resorts. The annual IKON pass gives access to all 12 destinations (23 total ski areas).
1958-1961 Snowmaking Keeps Ski Resorts Open All Winter Snowmaking proved a viable solution for the area when Rebel Ridge Ski Area began experimenting with it. Snow Summit was the first to install it extensively in 1961. Big Bear Lake’s water supply allowed for the ski resorts to operate all winter in the case of a lack of natural snow.
Hollywood’s Natural Back Lot Big Bear Lake has a history with the movie industry that dates back almost as far as the inception of filmmaking itself – and was once a popular escape for movie stars and other Hollywood elite. Today, this area continues to thrive as a top-notch filming location that attracts TV and film crews from all over the world to shoot against our scenic backdrop.

1928-1949 Winter Facilities are Built and Launch a New Era In 1928, a competition ski jump was built just west of the Village. In 1938, a toboggan run with a sling lift was developed behind the Village. The new winter facilities were a big success, causing more lodges and businesses to stay open year-round. The 30s and 40s saw an explosion of skiing, and the first ski resort opened in 1949.

BEAR ESSENTIALS FOR YOUR WINTER TRIP Once December, January and February roll around, it’s time to keep an eye on weather forecasts and get ready to experience a magical winter getaway. Mother Nature returns to Big Bear year after year to deliver beautiful layers upon layers of white goodness. When this occurs it’s time to prepare for a fun jaunt to the snow-covered mountains. Whether it’s your very first trip to the snow or even if you’re a seasoned winter pro, it’s important to pack the ‘bear’ essentials before you head up. One of the most necessary items of course, is warm clothing and headwear. Moisture wicking base layers are highly suggested. If you plan to spend an extended period of time playing in the snow, be sure to bring waterresistant outerwear (pants, jacket, gloves). You’ll want to keep your eyes protected with goggles or sunglasses. Remember, Big Bear is at a higher altitude, which means lips and skin needs extra protection. So check off lip balm and sunblock (SPF 30 or higher) from your winter checklist before heading up. You’ll want to make sure you have key components for your vehicle, too. Carry tire chains inside your vehicle from November to April, and be prepared to show the chains at all times. An ice scraper is a good idea to have just in case you need to clear the windshield. Last but not least, don’t forget your snow toys such as skis, snowboard, boots, poles, sled, snowshoes, etc. If you have the ‘bear’ essentials, your time in the snow will be much more enjoyable.

FROM LOS ANGELES AND ORANGE COUNTIES VIA HWY. 330 / HWY. 18: From I-10 East to the I-210 West merger in Redlands, or from I-210 East, exit Hwy. 330 in Highland. Merge onto Hwy. 18 in Running Springs and follow to Big Bear Lake.
• Use turn-outs to let others by! • No littering–please do not clutter roads. • Never throw cigarettes out the window.
Winter • Carry chains at all times from November to April. Be prepared to show chains at all times. • Chains go on drive wheels: front wheels of front-wheel-drive vehicles, and rear wheels of rear-wheel-drive vehicles. • Keep your gas tank full.
Summer • Keep air-conditioning off to prevent overheating. • Carry plenty of water with you. LISTEN TO FM 93.3 FOR UPDATES
ALTERNATIVE ROUTE FROM I-10 TO HWY. 38: I-10 East to Orange St. exit in Redlands. Continue straight for one block to the second stop light at Orange St. Turn left. After one mile turn right on Lugonia Ave. (this is Hwy. 38). Follow Hwy. 38 to the mountains. ALTERNATIVE ROUTE FROM I-210 TO HWY. 18: I-210 East to Waterman Ave. North exit in San Bernardino. Turn left at Waterman Ave. North (this is Hwy. 18). Take Hwy. 18 through mountain communities to Big Bear Lake. FROM SAN DIEGO COUNTY TO HWY. 330 OR HWY. 38: I-15 North to I-215 North, stay on I-215 North throughout the 60 West/215 North merger, to I-10 East. Follow above directions for either Hwy. 330 or Hwy. 38. FROM THE HIGH DESERT TO HWY. 18 (EAST ENTRANCE): I-15 to Victorville. Exit at Bear Valley Rd. East to Lucerne Valley. Hwy. 18 bears right (south) in Lucerne Valley. Take Hwy. 18 to Big Bear. FROM LAS VEGAS TO HWY. 18 (EAST ENTRANCE): I-15 South to Hwy. 247 South (through Barstow). Take Hwy. 247 to Lucerne Valley.
