TREASURER’S REPORT

by Clark T. Welton Treasurer and Finance Committee Chairman

As the Club’s Treasurer and Finance Committee Chairman, I am pleased to have the opportunity to report on the Club’s financial condition on behalf of the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors. I would like to begin by recognizing the efforts of this year’s Finance Committee, which is comprised of the following members: Mike Berchtold, Paul Casey, Geoff Coar, David Fishman, Matthew Foster, Mike Gomez, Brian Gooding, Bob Peterson, and Scott Shean. The Finance Committee works alongside General Manager Jeremy Samson, Director of Finance Patty Nydam, Food and Beverage Director Derek Domeracki, and Food and Beverage Controller Sola Adeleye to develop and monitor the Club’s annual operating and capital budgets while also overseeing the 10-year, long-term capital plan. We meet on a monthly basis to review performance and discuss forward-looking issues/ opportunities. At this time, we are eight months through our fiscal year and are projecting an annual operating surplus in excess of $300,000. Our projected operating surplus is a testament to the thoughtful approach that management, the Finance Committee, and the Board of Directors has taken to navigate these uncertainties. Management consistently searches for and identifies areas for financial efficiencies while remaining committed to providing outstanding member experience and value. Management, the Finance Committee, and the Board of Directors also hold an unwavering commitment to attracting and retaining the highest quality employees who collectively form such a significant part of the Big Canyon “family.” Our annual capital budget includes two primary sources of funding: 1) membership transfer and initiation fees and 2) a budgeted and pre-determined “depreciation transfer” from our annual operating plan. With four months remaining in our fiscal year, we have exceeded 90% of our budgeted inflows for the year due to strong demand in all categories of our membership. We anticipate completing the fiscal year with capital reserves in excess of $4.0 million. The Club continues to maintain a detailed 10-year capital plan that is revisited frequently with oversight of the Finance Committee, Long-Range Planning Committee, and the Board of Directors. Over the last five years, the Club has made significant capital improvements, including projects such as the completion of the Canyon Room remodel, the construction of the pickleball courts, and the remodel of the fitness facility. During such time, we have reduced our

bank debt by approximately $10 million, so the balance at fiscal year-end will be approximately $6 million- without any member assessments. In terms of the long-term capital plan, the Club remains on track to pay down the remaining amount of our bank debt by June of 2027. The Finance Committee is also working closely with the Board and the Golf Course Master Plan Committee to determine the operating and long-term capital considerations to the extent that the membership decides to proceed with a major renovation. We remain confident that the Club is well-positioned for long-term financial success. As I have stated in prior communications, we should all be very grateful that we are members of a club that has such a strong financial foundation. The Finance Committee and Board of Directors will continue to diligently work with management so that we operate the Club in a fiscally responsible way while delivering outstanding service and benefit to our members in addition to being an employer of choice for our highly valued employees/team members.

PUSH FOR

Pristine

Proper Divot Pattern on the Practice Facility

The Practice Facility at Big Canyon is highly utilized by members and guests throughout the year. To assist Director of Agronomy Bobby Gluck, the Golf Activities Committee would encourage members and guests to use a linear divot pattern when warming up or practicing can help keep the hitting area in great shape throughout the year. This pattern helps the grass to grow back in the shortest period and maintains a neat and organized appearance on the on the practice facility. 1. Linear: In a linear divot pattern, golfers aim to create divots in a straight line or in parallel lines. This can be useful for maintaining a neat and organized appearance on the driving range. It also helps to evenly distribute wear and tear on the turf. 2. Scattered: A scattered divot pattern removes the most amount of turf because a full divot is removed with every swing. Scattering divots results in the most turf loss and uses up the largest area of a tee stall. This forces the golf facility to rotate tee stalls most frequently and often results in an inefficient use of the tee. 3. Concentrated: A concentrated divot pattern removes all turf in an area. While this approach does not necessarily result in a full-sized divot being removed with every swing, by creating a large void in the turf canopy there is little opportunity for timely turf recovery. The goal is to offer an amazing golfing experience daily, this starts with everyone working together as a team and doing their part toward keeping our golf course and practice facility in the best possible shape. The golf professional staff and GAC of Big Canyon Country Club are thankful for your efforts in promoting proper golf etiquette throughout the year. We are more than happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the aspects listed above.

BCCC 50th Anniversary party Joanne and James Grant with Corinne and Martin Morgenstern

Martin’s 60th Surprise Birthday Party with Todd Meyer, Clark Booth, John Pierce, Bruce Nott, Martin Morgenstern, and Gregg Vorwerck

MEMBER CONNECTION Getting to know the Morgenstern’s with Martin and Corinne Morgenstern

History In 1976, I was first exposed to Big Canyon Country Club. It took 29 years to finally get the opportunity to join the Club in 2005. It involved getting a job, starting a career, moving from Manhattan Beach to Newport Beach, getting married, starting a family, and saving the money to join. We have been members for 19 years now and have enjoyed every day of it! Fun Story we have two to share In 2005, when we were preparing to join Big Canyon, we were also preparing to remodel our backyard. On the day of the membership committee and applicant meeting at 5:30 p.m., Corinne must have been running late because at 5:20 p.m., Peter Marr and I were sitting alone having a glass of wine. Thinking it would be a good idea to call Corinne and make sure she was on her way, I did, and she answered her phone. I asked her where she was and reminded her that we had a meeting in 10 minutes. She responded with, “I want to make sure there is enough money to finish the backyard before I show up for the meeting.” Before I could respond, she emphasized, “NOW”. Obviously, I said OK, and shortly thereafter, she walked in the side door of the old clubhouse where she had been waiting for my call and in time for our 5:30 p.m. interview. In 2010, Corinne planned a surprise birthday/golf party at Big Canyon for me. After showing up to play golf with just Bob Cluck, I bumped into several LA friends and a host of other local friends. I started to think “This is odd. How come I wasn’t invited to play with any of these other pals, and it’s my birthday?” Then suddenly there was Corinne laughing and saying, “HA HA GOTTCHA HAPPY BIRTHDAY.”

Golfing buddies - Steve Zotovich, Jim Anderson, Jim Sherman, Gregg Vorwerck, Kent Lucas, Bob Cluck, Alan Beyer, and Martin Morgenstern Paquita the Monkey on tricycle with Martin

First Job I started my career a little backward; in 1969 was drafted and was “lucky” enough to get a low number! So in 1972, after the service, I attended college and graduated 4 1/2 years later in 1976. My last year, I worked at Coldwell Banker as an intern for two college credits, where I met John Pierce, who became a mentor, friend, and a huge influence on my future. Coldwell Banker did not hire me after my internship but suggested I work for IBM for three years and then come back. I did, and after hounding Clark Booth for a year, he finally hired me in the Newport Beach office of Coldwell Banker, now known as CBRE. Clark was one of the early Big Canyon members and has remained a good friend all these years. Favorite Activities There are so many: dinners with friends, events with our sons Michael and Kevin such as the Fourth of July, Christmas, Easter Egg hunts, swim team; the gym, pool, and on and on. Shortly after joining Big Canyon, you realize it is more than a country club; it is really a lifestyle that becomes a part of your daily life. However, in my case, the golf course with the regular group of guys and all the other guys that play golf and are always inviting and ready to include you or be included in your group is my favorite activity. The golf course and clubhouse are first class, but it is the people that make golf my favorite activity. My favorite hole is 18; it’s either time for redemption by hitting a hero shot so I can say well, I played 18 good, or I’m just trying to par so I can post a presentable score. Pickleball is Corinne’s favorite activity. She has a wonderful group of people she plays with; they enjoy the comradery, but also the competition. Unlike my golf group guys who just enjoy being on the course and taking each other’s money, the pickleballers are all about winning and then drinking afterwards! Fun Facts When I was five, I had a pet monkey. I would take Paquita with me when I rode my tricycle around the neighborhood. If we were stranded on an Island, it would be either Anguilla for kickback casual or St. Barth for French steroids in the Caribbean. In either location, we would do just fine with two beach chairs, two umbrellas and two rum punches. We in fact do the above two times a year. We have two Pumans, puppies who think they are humans.
