The Youth Golf Program provides a wide array of opportunities for every skill level. Designed to bring the best athlete out of each player, the professional staff utilizes their enthusiasm and knowledge of the game to instruct all participants in a fun atmosphere. With experienced instructors, varied clinics, advanced technologies, and superb training facilities, we feel confident that your golfers will get the best instruction and the most out of their golf game here at the Big Canyon Country Club .

The Youth Golf Program enables the newest player up to those wishing to compete in high school and college, with the opportunities to learn and grow. This guide is provided to inform you of all of your choices in the program.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The objective of the Board of Directors, Golf Activities Committee, Youth Golf Committee, and our professional staff is to provide our members, their children, and grandchildren, with the opportunity to be exposed early in life to the game of golf. Through instructional clinics, weekly organized events, and a schedule of Club and team tournaments, we will teach the basic skills and etiquette of the game to as many children as possible. The emphasis of our program will be fun, enabling youth golfers to make new friends and learn a skill that will be enjoyed throughout their lives. Big Canyon Country Club is justifiably proud of its heritage in Youth Golf with some of Southern California’s finest youth golfers having grown up using our facilities. The Club provides practice facilities for the University of California Irvine Golf Team and the Newport Harbor High School Golf Team.

ELIGIBILITY

The Big Canyon Country Club Youth Golf Program is open to members’ children, grandchildren, and guests ages 5 to 18. Some parts of the golfing program have additional qualifications that are explained in each program’s description.

Instruction INDIVIDUAL LESSONS

Private or group golf lessons are available for up to five youth at a time. Open to children, grandchildren, and guests of all members. To book a lesson, please call the Golf Shop at (949) 706-5923, use the Golf Lesson link online at www.bigcanyoncc.org, or on the Big Canyon App.

YOUTH GOLF SATURDAY CLINICS

Open to children, grandchildren, and guests of all members. Youth Golf Clinics for experienced and enthusiastic instruction. Taught in a large group setting, specializing in being an athlete first and having a gameoriented approach. Both swingers and Gamers will utilize the American Development Model. This model builds athletes first. To learn more, please visit PGA.Coach. Little Swingers - 10:00 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Basics of putting, chipping, and full swing will be sprinkled in while developing athletes first. Gamers - 11:00 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. The next level, Gamers will dive deeper into the fundamentals of golf. Advanced techniques will be taught to prepare them to play. Reservations can be made online up to 24-hours in advance to enable skill levels to be grouped for optimum learning. $25 per session. If loaner clubs are needed, please specify when making the reservation.

TRAIN FORE THE GAME

Train Fore the Game is a monthly training program geared for youth golfers who want to take their game to the next level. Each player will be instructed and challenged in all facets of the game, including but not limited to swing mechanics, short game, course management, fitness, flexibility, strength, and endurance. Designed as an afterschool practice, participants will have access to three hours of coaching per week. Practice will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Each practice is designed to incorporate competition. Participants are encouraged to have been certified or are eager to become certified. Golf professional approval is necessary for entry into the program and must be able to play and walk five holes. $300 per person/per month from September 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. October 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. January 4, 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Feberuary 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. 3 | Big Canyon Country Club


DRIVE, CHIP AND PUTT PROGRAM

Open to children, grandchildren, and guests (space permitting) of all members. Sign up online or by calling the Golf Shop at (949) 706-5923. Saturdays: April 2, 9, 23, 30, and May 7, 21 Ages 5 to 9 (*Skill Based) - 10:00 to 11:15 a.m.. Members’ children and grandchildren $250; guests $300 Ages 10 to 14 (*Skill Based) - 11:30 to 1:00 p.m. Members’ children and grandchildren - $300; guests $350 Prepare your child, grandchild, or guest for an opportunity to go to Augusta National during Masters Week and compete at Augusta National Golf Club’s Drive, Chip and Putt Championship! The Drive, Chip and Putt Championship is a free nationwide junior golf development competition aimed at growing the game by focusing on the three fundamental skills employed in golf. Our Drive, Chip and Putt program is specifically catered to the format, skills, and structure of the national contest. The instruction will prepare our youth for the stresses of contest environments and the skills necessary to thrive. Expect to see contests, games, drills, prizes, and endless fun! All this culminates with a Big Canyon send-off on our final day with an end-of-year most improved, and overall prizes at a finale cookout on the range. The 72-hour cancellation policy is in effect. Sign up online or in the Golf Shop. Official event ages are as of April 1, 2022. Register for a local qualifier at drivechipandputt.com. *These are suggested times for these ages. Based upon first sessions, participants can be moved to a different time according to skill level.

YOUTH GOLF CAMPS

Open to children and grandchildren of all membership categories; guests accepted, space permitting. Youth Golf Camps are designed to engage juniors ages 5 to 15 in the game of golf. Through a specialized game-oriented approach, juniors will develop the skills needed to grow and enjoy the game for a lifetime. This year’s program specializes in a group learning environment where the golf professionals will organize games and competitions according to age and skill level. Each day will include instruction, team building exercises, sports stations, games, physical agility performance tracking, video analysis, rules, and etiquette. Thursday’s finale each week will include competitions, games, and at 3:00 p.m., food, and awards. Sign up online or in the Golf Shop. The 72hour cancellation policy is in effect. ELITE PREP

Taught by PGA members Travis Nelson and Chris Valeriano, Elite Prep is a specialized program focused on a unique practice schedule and nine holes of golf. This program will prepare highly-skilled youth golfers for competition. Most participants plan on qualifying for Team Play, SCPGA, AJGA, high school golf, and other events held around the country and at Big Canyon. To participate, youth golfers must be certified or pre-approved by one of Big Canyon’s PGA golf professionals. The program is open to the first ten approved golfers. Guests are welcome, space permitting, and must also be approved. Guests will be notified 48-hours in advance of their status. The 72-hour cancellation policy is in effect. Held Tuesday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Each session is $250 per golf eligible member child and $300 per guest (space permitting). YOUTH GOLF CERTIFICATION

Open to children and grandchildren of golf eligible members. All children under age 18 must obtain Youth Golf Certification prior to using any part of the golf facility without the accompaniment of an adult. Young golfers may receive beginning instruction and learn course etiquette at Youth Golf Clinics before taking the certification, during which a take-home test is given on the Rules of Golf, Rules of Play, and course etiquette. The test also includes a playing ability test which is by appointment only with a golf professional. The test consists of playing five holes with 10 strokes or less per hole and must be completed in one hour. Students who pass the certification test will receive a Big Canyon Certified Youth Golfer bag tag and have use of the golf course for play and practice without adult supervision. In addition, their name will be listed in The Approach newsletter. Clinics are offered twice each year. For 2022, they are scheduled on Saturday, July 23, and Saturday, August 13 from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required. The fee is $40 per golfer. YOUTH GOLF BOOT CAMPS

Each session is $250 per member child/grandchild; $300 per guest Tuesday and Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Session 1 July 12, 13 Session 2 July 19, 20 Let’s get after it! These two-day classes are an accelerated form of our regular camps. High energy, fast-paced, and lots of fun. Fundamentals will be a key component but more importantly, being an athlete in motion will be the focal point, encouraging speed, strength, and agility. Our youth must first be athletes to give them their best shot. Sign up online or in the Golf Shop. No registration deadline. The 72-hour cancellation policy is in effect.

KID CAMP SUMMER GOLF PROGRAM

Open to children, grandchildren, and guests of all members, ages 7 to 10. The Club offers an introduction to golf program for our Adventurers and Pioneers age groups on select days in July and August, as part of Kid Camp . Camp attendance is available on a weekly basis and includes lunch. Signups are taken through the Kid Camp Program. Contact the Activities Desk in Recreation or see page 18 on the reverse side of this book for more details.

SCPGA YOUTH GOLF ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP

Youth under age 18 years may belong to the Southern California Professional Golf Association (SCPGA), or the Junior Golf Association (JGA). Parents are encouraged to have their children involved in tournament play. Each tournament has separate entry fees that cover golf, prizes, and food. Tournaments are played in age divisions with no handicaps. Tournament entry forms are mailed out in advance by the SCPGA and JGA. For more information please see the SCPGA website at scpgajrtour.com. Youth Golf Tournaments YOUTH CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 36 HOLES

A 36-Hole Youth Club Championship will be held on the weekend of the Club Championships May 14-15. To participate, you must be 18 years old or younger and must be attending high school. Boys and girls are welcome. Tee times will be announced. Sign up online or in the Golf Shop no later than Tuesday, May 10. Entry fee of $90.00 includes prizes snd appetizers.

YOUTH CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 9 AND 5 HOLES

The 9- and 5-Hole Youth Club Championship is Saturday, August 6 - tee times start at 1:30 p.m. Boys and girls age 14 and under are welcome. Entry fee of $70 includes prizes and appetizers. Sign up online or in the Golf Shop no later than July 30.

YOUTH HOME AND HOME

New to the 2022 calendar is the Youth Home and Home. This is an opportunity to extend our youth competitive golfers an opportunity to compete against golfers from other clubs in our area. In this 9-hole competition, 2 players will qualify in each of the following age groups: 10-11, 12-13, 14-15. To qualify, players must complete a 9 hole qualifying score (verified by another youth golfer) no later than two days prior to the competition date. The scorecard must be attested and signed by another youth golfer. The official scorecard must also be signed, dated, and turned into the golf professional staff. PARENT/CHILD TOURNAMENT

Saturday, July 16 - Open tee times after 11:00 a.m. No age limit or course certification is needed to participate. Teams shall consist of any golf eligible parent-child combinations such as father/son or daughter, mother/daughter or son, grandparent/grandchild. Participation with multiple children is also encouraged! There will be three divisions, 18hole, 9-hole, and 5-hole competition. The entry fee of $90 per twosome ($45 per person if playing with more than one child) includes prizes and refreshments. The 72-hour cancellation policy is in effect.

YOUTH HOLIDAY INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT

Saturday, December 3 - Tee times from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Two-person teams. Please grab a partner or the professional staff will attempt to pair everyone up. 9 and 5 Hole Competition. This event is designed to be fun. Participants are encouraged to dress up in holiday attire. Prizes, awards, and food is included. $80 per team. The 72-hour cancellation policy is in effect.

YOUTH GOLF CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT

Youth Golf Course Certification is required for Youth Golfers under age 17 who wish to use the golf facilities without adult supervision or compete in tournaments. Please see the details on page 5. Youth Golf Program | 8

YOUTH GOLF RULES

Dependent children may play without an adult, subject to the following conditions: • • •

The child must be Youth Golf Certified by a golf professional Must display a certification tag Youth golfers with a handicap of 11 or higher may be granted golfing privileges at the discretion of a golf professional or a member of the professional staff. Youth golfers with a current Club handicap of 10 or less are subject only to the playtime restrictions of adults. Unless certified, golfers 10 years and under may not play without a golf eligible member or a golf professional. Children not accompanied by a golf eligible member must allow adults to play through on request, including yielding the first tee during hours allowed for play by youth golfers. All youth golf play shall be subject to the golf professional supervision. Play by youth at times other than those normally allowed for youth golfers may be permitted at the discretion of the golf professional if it does not interfere with adult play. Must check-in at the Golf Shop to receive approval to begin play. Play must begin at the first tee.

COURSE ETIQUETTE AND CARE

Every golfer should always be aware of proper course etiquette. Section I of the USGA Rules of Golf covers the fundamentals of the game including courtesy and priority on the course, and care of the course. All youth golfers are strongly encouraged to read the Rules of Golf before going on the course. Some suggestions are:

Always check with the Starter or Golf Shop staff before starting play Stop and look before making a practice swing Play from between the designated tee markers Stay behind other players until they have hit Be ready to play your shot Keep pace with the group in front (not the one behind) No running, shouting, or horseplay

Repair all ball marks plus one Avoid taking divots on practice swings Sand divots in fairways or kick in the sides Fill divots on tees with tee mix Rake bunkers Use appropriate trash containers

Attire GOLF COURSE ATTIRE

All persons using the golf course and practice areas must wear attire deemed appropriate for golf including golf shirts and golf shoes. The following are not permitted: • • • • • • • •

T-shirts, tank tops, sports jerseys, or any type of shirt with printed phrases or slogans. Ladies may wear a collarless top with sleeves or a sleeveless top with a collar, assuming it is conservative golf attire with the shoulders and back covered. Men’s shirts are to be tucked in. Shorts, skirts, skorts, etc., more than 4 1/2” inches above the top of the kneecap as well as men’s shorts below the bottom of the knee. Leggings are acceptable, assuming they are worn under approved shorts, skirts, skorts, etc. Blue jeans/shorts, cargo-style pants/shorts, and swimwear including board shorts. Sandals, unless specifically designed for golf. Golf caps worn upside down or backward. Please remove when indoors. Children five (5) years and older are subject to all of the golf attire rules listed above. It is requested that shoes not be changed or cleaned in the parking lot. Guest lockers and shoe service are available in the locker rooms. Members are responsible for adherence by their family members, their guests, and guests of a family member. The staff has a responsibility to advise members of violations and deny access to the course and practice facilities as they deem appropriate. Comments or objections to the policy are to be directed to the Golf Activities Committee or Board of Directors and not Club staff.

General Rules and Policies CONDUCT

In the event that a youth golfer is misbehaving, their privileges to golf may be suspended. If it becomes necessary to request that a youth player leave the course or not return due to misconduct, the matter will be referred to the Golf Activities Committee through the Youth Activities Golf Chairman. The Golf Activities Committee may uphold, revoke or extend the action, as it deems appropriate.

CLUBHOUSE POLICIES

Persons 16 to 21 years of age are not permitted in the locker room bars except when accompanied by a member. Persons under 21 years of age may not consume alcoholic beverages. Children under age 12 are not permitted in the locker rooms, and those ages 12 to 21 are only permitted when accompanied by a member. Persons under age 18 may not be in these areas after 4:00 p.m. Children of members and guests 16 years and older may have the use of the locker rooms for brief periods before and after golf. Children under the age of 16 may have the use of the locker rooms, but only when accompanied by a member.

Meet the Golf Professionals ROBERT PANG, PGA - Head Golf Professional (949) 706-5282 • rpang@bigcanyoncc.org Robert joined the Big Canyon staff in 2006 as the Head Golf Professional. He served as an Assistant Golf Professional for ten years at The Los Angeles Country Club and became a PGA member in 2002. Robert is very service oriented and continues to work on creating an exceptional golfing experience for members and guests on a daily basis. CHRIS VALERIANO, PGA - First Assistant Golf Professional, Tournament Director (949) 706-5292 • cvaleriano@bigcanyoncc.org Chris joined the Big Canyon golf professional staff in 2008 and became a PGA member in 2013. As the Tournament Director, Chris is responsible for organizing and executing all tournaments. Chris enjoys developing our youth players and growing the Youth Golf Program. He is also popular with adult players. Before coming to Big Canyon, Chris worked as an Assistant Golf Professional at Tustin Ranch Golf Club. MADISON BUTLER- Assistant Golf Professional (949) 706-5923 • mbutler@bigcanyoncc.org Madison joined the Big Canyon golf professional staff in 2017 and is a PGA Associate in her final stage to becoming a Class-A professional. She attended the Golf Academy of America and completed her Golf Complex and Operations Management degree in 2010. Madison is responsible for organizing and carrying out WGA and Niners tournaments and enjoys teaching BCCC youth golfers and is active in developing the youth golf programs. She has worked previously as a golf professional at Aliso Viejo Country Club and Dove Canyon Golf Club focusing on teaching and tournament planning. 17 | Big Canyon Country Club


GLENN DECK, PGA - Teaching Professional (949) 375-6358 Glenn has taught golf for over 30 years and understands that every golfer is different in physical characteristics and capabilities and that there is no “one perfect swing” that fits everyone. His goal is to develop his student’s individual swing and putting stroke based on the student’s body structure, flexibility, strength, personality, and natural motion. He is a Golf Tips Magazine alumni member, Top 25 Teachers in the USA, So. CA PGA Teacher of Year, Titleist and Ping Golf Certified, CA PGA Teachers Hall of Fame. Glenn is available on Wednesdays and Thursdays. BOBBY LASKEN - Teaching Professional (714) 906-5100 • bobby@laskengolf.com Bobby has been teaching professionally for more than 20 years, taught over 30 tour pros, 40 collegiate players, and hundreds of youth golfers. He was named a Top 20 Instructor in the nation under 40 years of age by Maximum Golf Magazine in 2001. In 2009, he was named a Golf Digest Top 20 California instructor. Southland Golf Magazine rated Bob the Best 2007 California Golf Instructor. Bobby is available on Mondays and Tuesdays to coach all levels and ages of golfers. TRAVIS NELSON, PGA - Teaching Professional (949) 291-0530 • tnelson@bigcanyoncc.org Travis manages our Youth Golf Programs, teaches, and conducts a variety of member clinics. He came to Big Canyon from The University of Texas Golf Club in Austin where he spent four years managing the player service staff, assisting in tournament operations, and teaching.
