Toowoomba Community SILUpdates

House Renovations

We are excited to announce the renovations are nearing completion at Vanity St in Toowoomba with only some minor touch-ups to be made before it will be reopening to the public to be a SIL home once more.

Additionally, Thank you to all of the Toowoomba staff who are in our SILs. Thank you for your dedication and consistency and for attending any meetings that we may as of you. Moving forward, with Tahnee’s departure from BigDog I will be the main point of contact for anyone that Tahnee may have been coordinating.

If you have any concerns or need anything from me please reach out, if I don’t know something then unfortunately I am unable to fix it. Keep up the great work team and stay warm!

Hidden Gems

The talent that lies within BigDog never ceases to amaze me. With WPHS audits conducted on our Sil houses we had a small list of tasks that needed to be completed. Some general wear and tear repairs, signage and highlighting of trip hazards.

In our Cudgee Court residence there is a fireplace that is unused and had several broken tiles on it's hearth. Our resident artists Billy and Wade used the broken tiles to make a mosaic pattern repairing the damage. Mightn't sound like much but when you see the start and finished product the creativity and skill to deliver the finished product should be a feature "House and Gardens". Next time you're chatting with a co-worker, ask them what they have done and what they can do and use these skills when supporting!

"We have some real hidden Gems in the BigDog Family".

B i l l y

What an exciting month it has been for our Rockhampton Day service. Despite the chilly weather, June has been packed with excitement and new adventures. We have been super busy starting new woodwork activities, which included getting creative with some painting and gluing. We have also been working hard on following the instructions of each project by using the visuals provided whilst being assisted by our wonderful support workers.

ROCKY DAY SERVICE

Our weeks have also been filled with morning and afternoon walks in town and down the beach plus some epic boardgame battles at the comic store next door. We have also been testing our cooking skills by making various meals both in our BigDog kitchen and out in the community. This month we have cooked a BBQ at the park plus, sushi and mini pizzas in our BigDog kitchen.

In amongst our normal routine activities such as going to the library, 10 pin bowling and pub lunches we have spent some time playing sports at the Indoor sports arena, feeding horses and doing some State of Origin themed science.

We’ve also made some unforgettable memories whilst we have been out on some exciting excursions. This month we visited the Rockhampton Agricultural Show where we had the opportunity to feed baby farm animals, play sideshow games, eat some delicious show food and treat ourselves with show bags.

A few weeks later, we headed down to Byfield to visit the Cooberie Park Wildlife Sanctuary where we fed kangaroos, emus and peacocks and saw some other exciting animals like iguanas, snakes, crocodiles, cassowaries, koalas and wombats. We then finished off our day with a relaxing lunch down at Yeppoon main beach which was the perfect way to end our day.

Then, to end our jam packed month, we treated ourselves to an awesome performance at the Walter Reid Cultural centre Called ‘Whalebone’.

Overall, its safe to say that we have all had a great month. The month of July will be just as exciting so stay tuned!
