WhatsUp Pollies Everywhere Queensland Elections Congratulations to all the new and re-elected members to the Queensland Government, Trevor Watts LNP Toowoomba North and David Janeski LNP Toowoomba South and in particular to the Greens Michael Berkman, the first Queensland Greens MP. So now how about all the parties getting down to the task of governing this great state with a sense of responsibility and building firm regional futures with employment and investment opportunities and an infrastructure that doesn’t include another tunnel or bridge in greater Brisbane

Local Candidates The recent Queensland State Election saw a number of new faces enter the political arena and in particular the Toowoomba North and Toowoomba South Electorates.

It was encouraging to see Alyce Nelligan represent the Greens as well as people with a physical disability.

However in an embarrassing episode at the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce meet the Candidates event at the Downs Club, Alyce

couldn’t enter the building via the front or rear doors and had to enter via a service door.

Then she was not able to access the lectern or raised platform to make her presentation and room had to be made for her at the front where she could not be seen.

This is what’s coming and how it will affect you and your family across Australia.

Welfare $10 million will be set aside for treatment services for job seekers affected by proposed drug testing trials, despite the pilot program being blocked in the Senate People receiving single parent payments will have their relationships verified to make sure they are not claiming income support they are not entitled to Youth allowance will rise by at least $4.60 and student payments by $8.30, while disability support will increase by upwards of $7.00 Carers will receive an extra $2.40 a fortnight in line with inflation Education Schools will shift to the Gonski 2.0 funding model, with a sixyear transition for underfunded schools and a 10-year transition for over-funded schools Commonwealth funding for universities will be frozen at 2017 levels for two years

Student payments for vocational education and training (VET) will be restricted to courses deemed a high national priority, meeting industry needs, addressing skills shortages and aligning with employment outcomes

Health

Lifetime limits on Commonwealth assistance towards tuition fees will be capped at $104,444 for most students and $150,000 for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science students

Three medications, including a ground-breaking cancer fighter, will be added to the Pharmaceutical Benefit Scheme (PBS), slashing their price by thousands of dollars. Carfilzomib is used to treat multiple myeloma sufferers, while Alectinib is prescribed for lung cancer patients and Mannitol for those with cystic fibrosis. Around 1130 people are expected to benefit from the extra coverage, which comes at a total cost of more than $300 million. Instead of $138,000, multiple myeloma patients for example will be charged $39.50 a script, while concession holders will pay just $6.40.

A new vaccine against genital warts will be listed on the National Immunisation Program, guarding against more strains of the virus at a cheaper cost

Defence veterans will be given greater access to antibiotics as well as heart disease and stroke medications through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme The government will provide $5.7 million over four years to communities affected by contaminated water supplies following the use of potentially toxic firefighting foams at the Tindal RAAF Base in the NT Plastic Bag Ban Single-use plastic bags will be gone at the check-outs of

Woolworths and Coles in 2018.

Woolworths revealed it would begin phasing out the bags in supermarkets, Big W and BWS stores, with a total ban in place

by June 30. The move sparked Coles to agree to do the same less than two hours later. Harris Farm Markets has also supported the move to phase out their bags. Western Australia will be plastic ban-free from July 1, 2018, and Victoria plans to set a date for its own plastic bag ban in 2018. NSW is now the only state in Australia that has not taken action to ban or reduce the presence of supermarket plastic bags.

Permanent Residency under the Direct and Employer Nominated Transition Streams if their occupation is not on the long and medium term occupation lists. But those who held or applied for a 457 visa from 18th April 2017 will be still be able to apply for the transition permanent visa option after March 2018, even if their occupation is on the short list.

Cashless Debit Card

From February 2018, codeine medicines Nurofen Plus, Panadeine, Mersyndol and Codral become available only by prescription. Pain Australia has urged people who rely on these medicines to speak with their doctor to find alternatives.

As part of the 2017-18 Federal Budget, the Australian Government announced the cashless debit card would be expanded to a third and fourth location.

These two new locations will be the Goldfields region, Western Australia and the Bundaberg and Hervey Bay region, Queensland. Both were selected based on support from local community and high levels of welfare dependency. The card will come to these new locations from early 2018.

Migration VISAs In 2018, the current 457 visa program will be abolished and replaced with the new TSS visa program. The TSS visa allows stays of up to two and four years.

When Federal Parliament passed the Privacy Amendment (Notifiable Data Breaches) Act 2017 last year, it started a process that means from February 22, 2018, all entities covered by the Australian Privacy Principles will have clear obligations to report eligible data breaches within 30 days. If an eligible data breach is confirmed, entities must provide a statement to each of the

individuals whose data was breached or who are at risk, and notify the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC).

Pensioners From July 1 2018, to receive Age Pension or Disability Support Pension (DSP), a person will need: 10 continuous years of Australian residence including at least five years during their Australian working life, or 10 continuous years of Australian residence and proof they have not received activity tested income support for cumulative periods of five years or more, or 15 years of continuous Australian residence.

Child Care Parents get access to a New Child Care Package from 2nd July 2018, where a new Child Care Subsidy (CCS), will replace the current Child Care Benefit and Child Care Rebate.

The CCS will be supported by the Child Care Safety Net and is designed to be simpler than the current multi-payment system, and is expected to offer more help to low and middle income families. To be eligible to receive CCS for a child, the child must be aged 13 years or under and not attending secondary school.

The child also must meet immunisation requirements and the parent or carer must meet residency requirements.

WhatsUp NDIS Plan Reviews Plan reviews are a normal part of the NDIS. Your plan review will help you to measure your progress against your personal goals, explore new goals and identify any changes in your life.

When you became a participant in the NDIS, you received a plan which funded reasonable and necessary supports that assist you in your daily living. This plan also helps you achieve your personal goals such as increasing your independence or learning a new skill.

Your plan review is the opportunity to check your supports are working for you and are helping you to progress and achieve your goals.

Depending on your needs and circumstances your plan review conversation will be conducted face to face or over the phone with an LAC at their office or over the phone or at an NDIS office. Your next plan will be developed based on your plan review conversation, and formally approved by the NDIA.

How can you prepare for your plan review?

You can work with your LAC, Support Coordinator, friend or family member to prepare for the plan review.

Have a think about your goals in both the short and long-term.

Knowing what you would like to work towards will help you to think about the supports and services you may need to achieve those goals and how you will use the funding in your plan to access the supports and services you need.

Support Coordination Not all participants will receive funding in their plan for Support Coordination. It is a special type of support and will only be deemed reasonable and necessary in certain circumstances.

If you have Support Coordination then you should contact them to assist you in completing a report that you can take with you to your NDIS Plan Review meeting.

The need for Support Coordination is expected to reduce as the capacity of the participant increases.

Talk to your providers about your new plan

Do you have to be under 65 to access the NDIS?

When you have completed your plan review, it is important you talk to your providers about the length of your plan and goals and your new supports.

Yes. The NDIS Act (external) has an age requirement that a person must be aged under 65 when they submit an access request.

I’m still waiting for my plan review – when is it going to happen?

If you access the Scheme for the first time before you’re 65, you have the option of staying in the Scheme beyond that point. You will discuss this situation as part of your regular plan review.

There is a lot of variables with this one. It is probably best to contact your Local Area Coordinator, or drop into your local NDIS office in the first instance to discuss your situation

People who are aged 65 years and over generally receive support through the aged care system.

WhatsUp Are iPads approved in a plan in special circumstances, and if so, can we buy it first and then get reimbursed?

Generally, the NDIS won’t fund the purchase of an iPad. If there are certain apps that relate directly to your goals and support needs, and are beneficial to reaching those goals, the cost of those apps can be funded by your NDIS plan.

All approved supports need to meet the criteria of Section 34 of the NDIS Act (2013) (external), which is about Reasonable and Necessary Supports.

In order to be considered reasonable and necessary, a support must:

The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2014-15) (external) reports that 86% of all households have access to the internet at home, with 62% of households accessing the internet via tablets. This is why they are considered everyday items.

The iPad may be more appropriately funded by other systems such as education and employment.

WhatsUp What is Pop Culture?

What are all your friends talking about right now?

A certain television program?

A type of clothing that your friends all are wearing?

All these things are part of pop culture.

Short for 'popular culture,' pop culture includes everything that regular people are talking about and are interested in.

Rather than movies that critics say are 'the best,' or books that highly educated people like, pop culture includes the attitudes, movies, books, art, and music of everyday people, usually younger people.

It is undeniable that pop culture has gone a long way in making the concept of “ global society� a reality by giving people across the world a common subject to talk about.

Who among the internet community heavily into pop culture can say that they have not made even a single friend overseas through fan accounts and chat rooms?

Enthusiasts happily share their potentially unusual interests with no reservation or thought of the stereotypes with which other people might associate them.

Say what you will, but fandoms attract and support independent thinkers who are accustomed to the potential isolation of the road less travelled.

However, we cannot just push away the fact that pop culture has negative influences as well.

The depiction of violence, blood and gore can have serious psychological repercussions especially on young children.

Some people can get so immersed into the fictional universes that it becomes difficult for them to distinguish between what is real and what is not.

The pop culture of the 1950s is different than the pop culture of the 1990s or now. Things that fascinate young people and make them stand out from their parents are the pop culture for each generation.

WhatsUp Star Wars - The Last Jedi 2017 highest reviewed Sci-Fi movie The Resistance, led by General Leia (Carrie Fisher), are on the run. As the First Order close in, their only hope is if Rey (Daisy Ridley) can tempt Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) back to the fight.

Luke Skywalker's peaceful and solitary existence gets upended when he encounters Rey, a young woman who shows strong signs of the Force. Her desire to learn the ways of the Jedi forces Luke to make a decision that changes their lives forever.

Meanwhile, Kylo Ren and General Hux lead the First Order in an all-out assault against Leia and the Resistance for supremacy of the galaxy.

The Last Jedi delivers everything you want from a Star Wars movie — fierce lightsabre action, space dogfights, exotic creatures, people off British telly as bad guys (hello, Ade Edmondson as a First Order Officer) — but layers it with story twists, character arcs and an emotional wallop that you could never have predicted.

And for my opinion, (alert spoiler ahead) Luke tossing away the lightsabre when Rey hands it to him reverently and then drinking ‘milk’ directly from a walrus type creature and stomping back to his island hut and closing the door showed him to be the whinger that he was in Episode IV represented how I came away from the movie.

It doesn’t all work, but it’s a long time since a huge franchise movie has delivered the thrills and feels in such surprising ways.

But please go and see it. The conversation that you will have after with other fans will be worth it.
