2012-13 BIG EAST MEN’S BASKETBALL PREVIEW BIG EAST AND THE FINAL FOUR Including Louisville in 2012, a BIG EAST team has made the Final Four 18 times in 33 years of competition. A BIG EAST squad has played in the national title game 10 times. The conference’s NCAA champions are: Georgetown (1984), Villanova (1985), Connecticut (1999, 2004 and 2011) and Syracuse (2003). Recent additional appearances were made by Louisville and Marquette just before both schools began competing in the BIG EAST in 2005-06. Louisville made it in 2005 and Marquette in 2003. Fourteen of the 15 league schools have played in the Final Four. LOUISVILLE KEPT BIG EAST IN FINAL FOUR NEWS Louisville’s trip to the 2012 Final Four gives the BIG EAST six Final Four appearances in the last seven seasons with five different teams. 2012 Louisville 2011 Connecticut 2010 West Virginia 2009 Connecticut, Villanova 2007 Georgetown ALL-TIME NCAA RECORDS BIG EAST teams finished 14-9 in the 2012 NCAA Championship. BIG EAST teams compiled a 13-10 record in the 2011 NCAA Championship. Since the league began play in 1979-80, BIG EAST teams own a 290-179 (.618) record in NCAA play. The BIG EAST has had only one season when its teams had a combined losing record in the NCAAs. In 1992-93, the league was 2-3. FINAL FOUR COACHES CLUB INCLUDES FIVE Five BIG EAST head coaches have reached the Final Four at least once. In 2009, Villanova’s Jay Wright joined the elite group. Connecticut’s Jim Calhoun made his fourth trip (2011, 2009, 2004, 1999). Louisville’s Rick Pitino is one of only two coaches in NCAA history to lead three different teams to the Final Four: Providence (1987), Kentucky (1997, 1996, 1993) and Louisville (2012, 2005). Jim Boeheim has been to the Final Four three times with Syracuse (2003, 1996, 1987). Georgetown’s John Thompson III led the Hoyas to the Final Four in 2007. LOUISVILLE WINS THE WEST Louisville won the NCAA West Regional with a come-from-behind 72-68 victory against Florida in Phoenix, Ariz. The Cardinals, who were seeded fourth, overcame an 11-point deficit in the final 8:16. In the regional semifinals, UofL eliminated No. 1 seed Michigan State 57-44. Freshman forward Chane Behanan was the West Regional MVP. BIG EAST LOVES THE WEST REGIONAL Louisville’s road to the Final Four through the West Regional has been a common path for BIG EAST Final Four teams. Eighteen BIG EAST teams have reached the Final Four and 10 have been West Regional champions. Additionally, when the Cardinals reached the Final Four in 2005, though a not a BIG EAST member yet, they also advanced through the West. NBA TAKES EIGHT FROM BIG EAST Eight BIG EAST players were chosen in the 2012 NBA Draft, including five first-round selections. Dion Waiters of Syracuse was taken fourth overall by the Cleveland Cavaliers, while Connecticut had a pair of lottery picks — Andre Drummond, who went ninth to the Detroit Pistons, and Jeremy Lamb, who was the No. 12 selection by the Houston Rockets. Maurice Harkless of St. John’s was the No. 15 pick, going to the

Louisville became the sixth BIG EAST team to play in the Final Four in the last seven years Philadelphia 76ers, while the Boston Celtics tabbed Syracuse’s Fab Melo with the No. 22 selection. For the past 12 years, at least one BIG EAST player has been a top-10 pick. THREE BIG EAST NEWCOMERS WIN GOLD WITH USA BASKETBALL U18 NATIONAL TEAM Three freshmen on BIG EAST rosters were part of the 12-man USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team, which won the gold medal at the FIBA Americas Championship in June. Forward Montrezl Harrell of Louisville, forward Jerami Grant from Syracuse and guard James Robinson of Pittsburgh were all part of the U.S. team, which won its five games by an average of 38.6 points, including an 81-56 win against Brazil in the final. BIG EAST MAINTAINED ITS ELITE EIGHT STREAK The BIG EAST is the only conference to place at least one team in every NCAA Elite Eight since 2002. Seven different squads — Louisville (2012, 2009, 2008), Syracuse (2012, 2003), Connecticut (2011, 2009, 2004, 2002), West Virginia (2010, 2005), Georgetown (2007, 2006), Villanova (2009, 2006), and Pittsburgh (2009) have reached the final eight over the last 10 seasons.

BIG EAST GRABBED NINE NCAA BIDS The BIG EAST received nine NCAA tournament invitations, the second highest total in NCAA Championship history, eclipsed only by last year’s BIG EAST total of 11. ESPN will provide exclusive coverage across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. All 12 games will be played at home sites with each conference hosting six games per year. The BIG EAST took the first edition of the Challenge, winning eight of the 12 games in 2011.

BIG EAST LEADS IN SWEET 16 APPEARANCES With four NCAA Sweet 16 teams last season (Syracuse, Marquette, Louisville and Cincinnati) the BIG EAST has had the most teams reach the regional semifinal round over the last 10 seasons. 2012-13 BIG EAST MEN’S BASKETBALL PREVIEW PITT, SETON HALL ALSO REACHED POSTSEASON Pittsburgh captured the title of the College Basketball Invitational. The Panthers defeated Washington State, two games to one, in a best-of-three format. Seton Hall was one of four No. 1 seeds in the National Invitation Tournament. The Pirates defeated Stony Brook in the first round before losing to Massachusetts. For the second consecutive season, 11 BIG EAST teams participated in the postseason. LOUISVILLE WON BIG EAST TOURNAMENT They entered The BIG EAST Championship as the No. 7 seed, but the Louisville Cardinals left Madison Square Garden in New York with the championship trophy. Louisville started with a 61-55 second-round win against Seton Hall. In the quarterfinals, the Cardinals stopped second-seeded Marquette 84-71. In the semifinals, UofL knocked off No. 3 seed Notre Dame 64-50. In the championship game, the Cardinals held Cincinnati to only 14 points in the first half and prevailed 50-44. Junior guard Peyton Siva won the Dave Gavitt Trophy as the Most Outstanding Player. NATIONAL SEMIFINALS ARE STILL SPECIAL After Louisville’s loss to Kentucky in the 2012 national semifinals, the BIG EAST has an 8-5 record in the Final Four semifinals against non-conference opposition. BIG EAST teams have played each other in the Final Four semifinals on two occasions — Syracuse beat Providence in 1987 (77-63) and Georgetown topped St. John’s in 1985 (77-59). SYRACUSE WON THE REGULAR SEASON The Syracuse Orange won the BIG EAST regular season with a 17-1 conference record. They are only the second team to post a 17-1 mark. Connecticut did it 1995-96. No BIG EAST team has gone undefeated in league play. At 31-2 entering the NCAA tournament, the Orange became the third team in BIG EAST to enter NCAA play with only two losses, joining Georgetown’s 1985 team and Connecticut’s 1996 squad.

SURPRISES FROM THE PRESEASON POLL Syracuse was picked as a co-favorite in the BIG EAST Coaches’ Preseason Poll and the Orange lived up to expectations by capturing the regular-season crown. Not every team finish followed the poll closely, however. USF was picked 14th and finished tied for fourth place with a 12-6 record. Georgetown was tabbed for 10th and the Hoyas ended up in a fourth-place tie with USF and Cincinnati. Notre Dame made it to third place at 13-5 after being placed ninth in the poll. 20 WINS REMAINS A GOOD YARDSTICK When a BIG EAST team reaches 20 wins by the end of conference tournament play, it has an excellent chance of receiving an NCAA invitation. Since the BIG EAST began in 1979-80, 155 of 161 teams with 20 wins received NCAA bids (96.3 percent). This year, eight of the nine 20-win teams made the NCAA Championship. Seton Hall, which played in the NIT, was the exception. MARQUETTE, CINCINNATI ALSO MADE SWEET 16 Marquette and Cincinnati joined Louisville and Syracuse as NCAA Sweet 16 teams. The Golden Eagles made their second straight appearance in the regional semifinals while the Bearcats were making their first trip since 2001. USF WAS BACK IN THE NCAAS The USF Bulls made their first NCAA appearance as a BIG EAST member in 2012. Their last NCAA trip came in 1992 when they lost a first-round game against Georgetown. This year, the Bulls, as a No. 12 seed, beat California in a first-round game before eliminating No. 5 seed Temple in the second round. The Bulls finished 22-14 overall and 12-6 in BIG EAST play. Stan Heath was named BIG EAST Coach of the Year. CROWDER WAS PLAYER OF THE YEAR Marquette forward Jae Crowder was named BIG EAST Player of the Year. The 6-foot-6 senior was one of the league’s most productive and versatile players. He finished the season fifth in the BIG EAST in scoring at 17.5 ppg, eighth in rebounding at 8.4 and second in steals at 2.5. Crowder helped lead Marquette to a second-place finish in the BIG EAST with a 14-4 record. SYRACUSE, LOUISVILLE WERE SECOND, THIRD IN NCAA ATTENDANCE Syracuse and Louisville ranked second and third, respectively, in national attendance last season. Syracuse averaged 23,618 fans in 19 home dates. Louisville averaged 21,503 in 20 dates at the KFC Yum! Center. Three other BIG EAST teams ranked in the top 40: Marquette was 13th (15,138), Connecticut was 26th (12,640), Georgetown was 35th (11,283). Additionally, the BIG EAST Championship at Madison Square Garden led all conference tournaments in both total (160,456) and average attendance (20,057). All eight sessions of the championship were advance sellouts.

Mick Cronin took Cincinnati to the NCAA Sweet 16 last season NON-LEAGUE RECORD STRONG ONCE AGAIN BIG EAST teams amassed a 175-58 (.751) record against non-conference competition in the 2011-12 season. It was the fourth consecutive season in which BIG EAST teams won more than 75 percent of their nonconference games and the 20th straight year with at least a .700 winning percentage. BIG EAST PREVALENT IN NATIONAL POLLS BIG EAST teams once again were prevalent in the national top 25 polls last season. The conference had at least five teams ranked in each week of the season and saw 13 of its 16 teams receive votes in at least one of the two major polls during the course of the year. Syracuse was ranked no lower than No. 5 through the entire season and spent six weeks as the nation’s top-ranked team. Marquette was ranked in the top 25 all year, while Louisville had a top-25 ranking in all but one week of the season. Six BIG EAST teams (Connecticut, Georgetown, Louisville, Marquette, Pittsburgh, Syracuse) spent time in the top 10 during the season.

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture Coach Mick Cronin has elevated the Bearcat program back into the national picture. UC has won 26 games in each of the last two seasons with last year’s club finishing 26-11 overall and 12-6 in the BIG EAST, including an appearance in The BIG EAST Championship title game. The season did not end until the Bearcats reached the NCAA Sweet 16 round. Cronin has to find a way to replace forward Yancy Gates and guard Dion Dixon, but he has three returning starters, including a pair of double-figure scorers and some other experienced players who appear ready to accept larger roles.

Who’s Back Sean Kilpatrick, one of the BIG EAST’s top perimeter shooters and an All-BIG EAST Second Team pick, averaged 14.3 ppg while connecting on a league-high 92 3-pointers. The 6-foot-4 junior is the top returning scorer. Point guard Cashmere Wright returns for his senior season after averaging 10.9 points and 4.6 assists. Guard JaQuon Parker averaged 9.4 ppg and 5.6 rpg. The backcourt has depth with sophomores Jeremiah Davis, Ge’Lawn Guyn and Jermaine Sanders. Up front, forward Justin Jackson averaged 5.1 points and 4.2 boards while starting 20 games. The 6-foot-8 athletic junior runs the floor well and is a shot-blocking threat. Six-foot-10 senior Cheikh Mbodj averaged 1.7 points and 2.1 rebounds while playing just under 10 minutes per game. Six-foot-10 sophomore Kelvin Gaines saw limited duty.

Who’s Missing Gates was third on the team in scoring with a 12.2 average and first in rebounding at 8.9, which was fifth in the BIG EAST. Guard Dion Dixon averaged 13.0 points and was a prime contributor to the Bearcats’ gritty defensive play. Forward Octavius Ellis (2.3, 1.7) saw limited action.

Storylines The Bearcats have a solid core of players who also have winning experience, led by Kilpatrick and Wright. The team may try to get up and down the floor a little more this season. A pair of 6-foot7 newcomers, junior Titus Robles and freshman Shaquille Thomas, may help with that plan. Both could see plenty of immediate playing time. Cronin wants his team to continue to play strong defense and take care of the ball. The Bearcats held 29 of 37 opponents last season to less than 70 points. Last year, UC was third in the BIG EAST in turnover margin (+3.11).

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture Last year’s young team had to find a way to succeed without Kemba Walker, who helped carry the Huskies to the 2011 national championship. The 2011-12 squad did taste success, finishing 20-14 and earning an NCAA berth, its 22nd under coach Jim Calhoun. The challenge for the upcoming season is that UConn will be young again, but it will have to cope with the departure of two players who were NBA lottery picks and two other regulars who transferred.

Who’s Back The talented backcourt includes junior Shabazz Napier and sophomore Ryan Boatright. Napier was second on the team in scoring last year, averaging 13.0 ppg. Boatright was third at 10.4. Boatright usually came off the bench, but both players saw over 30 minutes of action per game. Napier was third in the BIG EAST in assists with a 5.8 mark and was eighth in steals at 1.7. Junior forward Tyler Olander started nine games and averaged 4.2 points and 3.9 rebounds. DeAndre Daniels and Niels Giffey both averaged double figures in minutes played, mostly at small forward. Daniels made 12 starts and averaged 3.0 points and 2.1 rebounds and showed some promise offensively. Giffey contributed more on the defensive end, while averaging 2.6 points. Enosch Wolf, a 7-1 junior, saw only limited playing time last year, but he will be counted on to help Olander close to the basket.

Who’s Missing Jeremy Lamb and Andre Drummond went in the first 12 picks of the NBA draft. The 6-foot-5 Lamb was the Huskies’ leading scorer with a 17.7 average that also ranked third in the BIG EAST. He also averaged 4.9 rebounds. Drummond, a 6-foot-11 center, averaged 10.0 points and a team-leading 7.6 rebounds. Another frontcourt starter, Alex Oriakhi, transferred. He averaged 6.7 points and 4.8 rebounds while starting 28 games. Forward Roscoe Smith also went the transfer route. He played 18.2 minutes per game and averaged 4.4 points and 3.4 boards.

Storylines Last year, the Huskies had to replace guard Kemba Walker, their scoring and emotional leader. This season, they can rely on a talented backcourt, but need frontcourt players to step up and hope that the injury bug does not bite. With the departure of four players from last year’s regular rotation, newcomers may get a longer look than usual to contribute. Up front, 6-foot-10 freshman forward Philip Nolan will push Olander and Wolf for immediate playing time along with 6-foot-8 forward Leon Tolksdorf who has followed Giffey and Wolf to Storrs from Germany. R.J. Evans, a senior transfer from Holy Cross, will contribute. Even with Napier and Boatright, rookie guard Omar Calhoun (no relation to the head coach) brings highly regarded shooting skills and a 6-foot-4 frame. He figures to help right away.

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture The Blue Demons showed significant improvement last year in coach Oliver Purnell’s second season. The cornerstones have been forward Cleveland Melvin and guard Brandon Young. Both will be juniors this season. Now, the Blue Demons want their continued improvement to translate into a move up the in the standings. The team returns six of its top seven scorers from last year.

Who’s Back Melvin, a 6-foot-8 forward, is the BIG EAST’s top returning scorer after averaging 17.5 points last season. He also averaged 7.4 rebounds while earning All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention recognition. Two seasons ago, he was the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year. Young, a 6-foot-4 guard, averaged 14.5 points and 4.7 assists. Melvin and Young were ranked among the top scoring sophomore duos in the country. Forward Jamee Crockett started 16 games as a freshman last year and averaged 8.6 points. Forward Moses Morgan was enjoying a fine sophomore season until he was slowed by a head injury in early February. He averaged 9.0 points in 26 games and made a team-high 54 3-pointers. Junior college transfer Worrel Clahar was an able reserve in the backcourt, averaging 6.0 points in 16.8 minutes of playing time. Guard

Charles McKinney started 15 times as a freshman and averaged 4.2 points. Forward Donnavan Kirk helped in the frontcourt, averaging 3.5 points and 4.0 rebounds. Who’s Missing Krys Faber was a rugged center who averaged 4.0 points and 4.7 boards. Guard Jeremiah Kelly averaged 8.6 points and 3.9 assists while serving as a perimeter shooting threat with Crockett.

Storylines Purnell wants to continue his running style and has more depth this season to execute that plan. The team returns 84 percent of its scoring, 79 percent of its rebounding and just over 77 percent of its minutes played from last season. Melvin and Young are veterans of the BIG EAST wars and now have more experienced comrades to help the Blue Demon cause. 2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture With 10 freshmen and sophomores on last year’s roster, the Hoyas nevertheless turned in what has been a typical season under coach John Thompson III. The Hoyas finished 24-9, 12-6 in the BIG EAST, and played two games in the NCAA Championship. The Hoyas lose their top three scorers from last year’s club, but most of Thompson’s younger players already have some solid experience and will try to maintain the Thompson level of consistency. A talented group of newcomers should have some opportunities to work their way into the rotation. Maybe more so than most programs, Georgetown has traditionally relied on seniors for production and leadership, but the 2012-13 roster contains no seniors.

Who’s Back Sophomore Otto Porter averaged 9.7 points and a team-leading 6.8 rebounds as a freshman. His statistics did not reflect the true value of his contributions. A heady young player, Porter averaged nearly 30 minutes per game while making eight starts. Nate Lubick, a 6-foot-8 junior, averaged 3.5 points and 3.9 boards while playing 18.4 minutes per game and starting all 33 contests. In the backcourt, Markel Starks made 25 starts and averaged 7.1 points, mostly at point guard. Jabril Trawick came off the bench at point guard as a freshman. He provided some energy and a 4.3 scoring average. Forward Greg Whittington played 20.1 minutes per game as a freshman. He averaged 4.3 points and 2.9 rebounds. Six-fooot-nine forward Mikael Hopkins (2.4) saw limited action, also as a freshman.

Who’s Missing The Hoyas will miss guard Jason Clark, forward Hollis Thompson and center Henry Sims. Clark was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection while averaging 14.0 points and serving as the team leader. Thompson put up a 12.8 scoring mark while leading the BIG EAST in 3-point shooting, making 43 percent. Sims averaged 11.6 points, 6.0 boards and led the team with 114 assists and 45 blocked shots.

Storylines For the second straight season, Thompson has three starters to replace. Porter and Lubick probably will be on the floor together more this season at forward. Hopkins will have the opportunity to become a regular near the basket, though he will be challenged by 6-foot-10 freshman Brandon Bolden. In the backcourt, Starks should slide into a full-time starting role at the point with Trawick continuing to back him up. At shooting guard, freshman D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera may get a long look to become a starter.

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture The Cardinals made it all the way to the Final Four last season and finished 31-6. It was the school’s ninth Final Four appearance and the second since 2005. The postseason run began in New York when Louisville, as the seventh seed, won The BIG EAST Championship by winning four games in four days. Then, the Cardinals headed to the West Regional where they knocked off, in order, Davidson, New Mexico, No. 1 seed Michigan State and Florida. The Cardinals have piled up nine straight 20-win seasons under coach Rick Pitino. They have advanced to at least the NCAA Elite Eight in three of the last five seasons. Since joining the BIG EAST in 2005-06, Louisville’s 81-41 conference record is the best in the league.

Who’s Back Pitino welcomes back three starters and their effective sixth man. Guard Russ Smith filled the sixth man role, scored 11.5 ppg and was third in the BIG EAST with a 2.2 steals mark while playing just more than 21 minutes per game. Peyton Siva returns for his senior season at point guard. He averaged 9.1 points and was fourth in the league in assists at 5.6. Siva won the Dave Gavitt Trophy as the Most Outstanding Player at The BIG EAST Championship. Forward Chane Behanan made the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team after averaging 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. Center Gorgui Dieng averaged 9.1 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.2 blocked shots. His blocked shot mark led the BIG EAST and he was third in rebounding. Mike Marra,

a 6-foot-5 perimeter shooter, returns after missing last season with a knee injury. Also on the wing, Wayne Blackshear got his feet wet in 15 games, averaging 2.5 points. Guard Kevin Ware had a similar experience. Sophomore Angel Nunez saw limited duty on the wing. Closer to the basket, 6-foot-8 forward Stephan Van Treese missed most of the season with a knee injury. Forward Zach Price saw limited action, playing 19 games. Who’s Missing Forward Kyle Kuric was the team’s scoring leader, averaging 12.6 points. Dependable guard Chris Smith averaged 9.7 points. Both were veterans who supplied strong leadership. Reserve forwards Rakeem Buckles (4.0, 3.8) and Jared Swopshire (3.3,

2.8) transferred. Storylines The Cardinals have appeared close to the top of early preseason national polls. The 2012-13 team appears deeper and more experienced than last year’s Final Four squad. Pitino will be looking for another strong season defensively. Last year, his team limited its opponents to 60 or fewer points in 23 of its 40 games. The Cardinals allowed an average of 61.0 points per game. Dieng returns to anchor the defense in the paint. Siva and Russ Smith are ball hawks in the backcourt. Offensively, Pitino appears to have more options at guard and forward. Freshman Montrezi Harrell is the most heralded newcomer. He will push Behanan at power forward.

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture Marquette advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the second consecutive season last March. The Golden Eagles finished 27-8 overall and second in the BIG EAST with a 14-4 mark, their best record since joining the league. The 2012-13 edition of coach Buzz Williams’ club will have to find a way to replace BIG EAST Player of the Year Jae Crowder and All-BIG EAST First Team pick Darius Johnson-Odom, though a veteran group returns. Offense may be a little more by committee this season. Marquette led the BIG EAST in scoring (75.4 ppg) with Johnson-Odom second individually at 18.3 ppg and the versatile Crowder fifth at 17.5. Both were NBA draft choices.

Who’s Back Three starters return including backcourt starters Vander Blue and Junior Cadougan. Blue, a 6-foot-4 junior, averaged 8.4 points and 4.5 rebounds while also excelling on the defensive end. Cadougan, a 6-foot-1 senior, is the point guard. He averaged 6.3 points and 5.4 assists, which was fifth in the BIG EAST. Todd Mayo played 21.1 minutes per game as a freshman and was impressive offensively, averaging 7.9 points. Sophomore Derrick Wilson backed up at the point as a rookie. Near the basket, junior Davante Gardner averaged 9.5 points and 5.3 rebounds while starting 12 games. He took over for Chris Otule who played eight games before going down with a knee injury. A strong return by Otule would make MU deeper and more experienced. Junior Jamil Wilson made 15 starts at

forward. He averaged 7.1 points and 4.1 boards. Forward Juan Anderson saw limited duty. Who’s Missing Crowder was one of the BIG EAST most versatile performers last year. He averaged 17.5 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.5 steals, which was second in the league. In addition to his 18.3 scoring mark that included plenty of clutch baskets, Johnson-Odom was a 3-point threat, making 38.5 percent. Reserve forward Jamail Jones played a supportive role.

Storylines A key addition could be Trent Lockett, a senior transfer from Arizona State who will be eligible immediately. He averaged 13.0 points and 5.8 rebounds for the Sun Devils last season and may find an immediate home on the wing. He shot 41.2 percent from 3-point range. Another transfer, 6-3 Jake Thomas, is also expected to help with the perimeter shooting. Freshman guard Jamal Ferguson will try to find some playing time in a crowded backcourt. Heralded freshman forward Steve Taylor is expected to make a strong run to make the regular rotation right away. Again, the Golden Eagles have important pieces to replace, but seem to have enough able replacements to put an experienced and productive team on the floor.

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture For the second straight season, the Irish easily surpassed preseason expectations. Picked ninth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll last year, the Irish finished third with a 13-5 mark. They were 21-12 overall after earning their fifth NCAA berth in the last six years. And last season’s success was achieved after All-BIG EAST forward Tim Abromaitis was lost for the season with a knee injury after playing just two games. Over the last two seasons, coach Mike Brey’s team is 27-9 in BIG EAST play.

Who’s Back With Abromaitis’ absence, the Irish can welcome back all five starters and will be one of the most experienced teams in Brey’s 13 seasons. The backcourt of Jerian Grant and Eric Atkins is one of the best in the country. Both averaged more than 12.0 ppg while Grant averaged 5.0 assists and Atkins’ assists mark was 4.1. Grant, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, made the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. Atkins has been a starter since his freshman season. Senior Joey Brooks (3.2) continues to back up both players. Jack Cooley anchors the frontcourt with his 6-foot9, 244-pound frame. The senior was voted BIG EAST Most Improved Player after posting averages of 12.3 points and 8.9 rebounds. Forward Scott Martin, who was awarded a sixth year of eligibility, averaged 9.5 points and played his usual strong defensive

role. Pat Connaughton earned a starting position as a freshman by midseason. A capable outside shooter, he averaged 7.0 points. Senior forwards Tom Knight (1.7, 1.6) and Mike Broghammer (0.5, 0.4) will continue their reserve roles. Who’s Missing As mentioned, Abromaitis only played two games before suffering his senior season-ending injury. He was the named the BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year for a third straight year. Reserve guard Alex Dragicevich, who averaged 6.6 points, transferred.

Storylines Notre Dame can boast an experienced lineup that is used to success. Brey’s team continues to be extremely formidable at home, recording a 16-1 mark last year at Purcell Pavilion. In addition to the returning starters, the Irish can look to senior forward Garrick Sherman, a 6-foot-10 transfer from Michigan State, to help around the basket. Six-foot-10 freshman Zach Auguste also will push to be noticed up front. Heralded freshman Cameron Beidscheid will back up Connaughton on the wing. 2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture The Panthers’ long streak of NCAA excellence finally ended last season. Pitt had earned 10 straight NCAA Championship invitations, which included five Sweet 16 appearances and one trip to the Elite Eight. The Panthers had won six BIG EAST titles. Their overall record last season was a respectable 22-17, but coach Jamie Dixon’s squad finished only 5-13 in league play. The season ended with a CBI title, but the Panthers are accustomed to NCAA trips. This year, the Panthers have to replace two veteran starters, but seem to be well equipped to bounce back into a contender’s role.

Who’s Back Five of the top seven scorers return. Point guard Tray Woodall averaged 11.7 points and 6.1 assists, which would have ranked him third on the BIG EAST leaderboard if had he played enough games to qualify. Woodall missed 11 games with groin and abdominal injuries. The Panthers lost seven in a row during Woodall’s absence. Forward Lamar Patterson averaged 9.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists, but came on strong in the postseason. The 6-foot-5 junior averaged 13.3 points in his final six games and was named MVP of the CBI. Forward Talib Zanna also finished well, averaging 11.8 points and 7.0 rebounds in his final six contests. Dante Taylor averaged 5.8 points and 4.9 rebounds while seeing time at power forward and center. Junior forward J.J. Moore (7.5) figures to

continue to provide some scoring punch off the bench. Backcourt reserves Cameron Wright (2.2) and John Johnson (4.2) are back. Who’s Missing Guard Ashton Gibbs was an excellent four-year performer who will be missed. One of the better outside shooters in the history of the BIG EAST, Gibbs averaged 14.6 points last year and made 42.5 percent from 3-point range in BIG EAST games during his career. Rugged forward Nasir Robinson averaged 10.6 points and a team-leading 6.5 rebounds while starting every game.

Storylines T h e Pa n t h e rs u s u a l l y p u t a n experienced team on the floor, but they were younger than usual last year. The injury to Woodall seemed to derail the season for a while, though Dixon found a rotation that sparked success in the postseason. Two newcomers are expected to make strong pushes for starting roles this year. Six-foot-5 junior transfer Trey Ziegler is eligible immediately. Ziegler scored 1,011 career points and owned a 16.0 ppg scoring mark at Central Michigan. Steven Adams, a 7-foot freshman center from New Zealand, is considered one of the nation’s top high school recruits and is expected to make a strong bid to start. Pitt’s 129-57 BIG EAST mark over the last 11 seasons is still tops in the league. The Panthers want to return to that level of excellence.

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture In his first season as the Friar head coach, Ed Cooley instilled his strong belief in discipline and pride. Providence was a more cohesive group last season and his players blossomed in that environment. Cooley will continue with his style, but he wants some more results in the win column this year. Last year’s squad finished 15-17 overall and 4-14 in the BIG EAST. Cooley has secured a strong recruiting class that will have ample opportunity to be noticed and help push the Friars up in the standings.

Who’s Back Vincent Council has developed into an elite guard in the BIG EAST. Last season, he averaged a team-leading 15.9 scoring mark and was first in the league in assists (7.5). He was an All-BIG EAST Third Team selection. Forward LaDontae Henton and guard Bryce Cotton each averaged 14.3 ppg. Henton also grabbed 8.6 rebounds per contest which earned him a spot on the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. Cotton tied for third in the league with 77 3-pointers and was second in free throw shooting, making 89.1 percent. Council and Cotton were first and second, respectively, in the BIG EAST in minutes played. Council played 38.7 minutes per game and Cotton was 38.6. Kadeem Batts, a 6-foot-9 junior, helped closer to the basket with averages of 6.2 points and 4.2 rebounds. Six-foot-9 Brice Kofane

played in 29 games as a freshman and helped defensively while averaging 2.7 points and 4.1 boards. Reserve forward Lee Goldsbrough (0.8, 1.7) saw limited duty. Who’s Missing Guard Gerard Coleman, who averaged 13.2 ppg while starting 21 games, along with forwards Bilal Dixon, who averaged 4.3 points and 4.1 boards, while starting seven times, transferred. Reserve forward Ron Giplaye (1.3, 2.0) also left the program.

Storylines Kris Dunn is a heralded freshman recruit who is talented enough of make an immediate impact, but a shoulder operation will leave him sidelined until December. The Friars led the BIG EAST in 3-point shooting and the team should be strong again from beyond the arc. With Council established as one of the nation’s top guards and Henton as an emerging star at forward, the Friars have some top-level talent that should make a difference. If some of the younger players can adjust quickly to the college game, then Providence could be poised for a big season.

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture Last year, coach Mike Rice had a roster that included seven freshmen and no seniors on scholarship. There were a couple of breakthroughs with top-10 wins against Florida and Connecticut, but there were also plenty of times when the inexperience hurt, especially in BIG EAST play. With that large group of freshmen becoming sophomores, the Scarlet Knights want the “breakthroughs” to increase in 2012-13. The core of the backcourt should be three secondyear players. The frontcourt has more experience, which should help Rice to keep the Scarlet Knights moving in the right direction in the league standings. Last year, RU was 6-12 in the BIG EAST and 14-18 overall.

Who’s Back The guard trio of Eli Carter, Myles Mack and Jerome Seagears got their feet wet right away and showed plenty of promise. Carter and Mack were the team’s top two scorers, averaging 13.8 and 9.8 points, respectively. Carter played big in the big games. He averaged 16.8 ppg against nationally ranked teams. Carter ranked fourth in scoring among BIG EAST freshmen. Mack is more of a point guard. He started 14 games, but was third in minutes played (26.6). Seagears started 25 games and averaged 7.7 points. Dane Miller, a 6-foot-6 senior, has been a versatile performer on the wing. Last season, he averaged 7.9 points, a team-leading 6.6 rebounds and was a surprising fourth in the BIG EAST in blocked shots with a 1.6 average. Junior Mike Poole averaged 6.5 points coming off the bench mostly

behind Miller. Six-foot-5 Malick Kone (3.3) was slowed by a knee injury. The Scarlet Knights have high hopes for Kadeem Jack (1.2, 1.6), a mobile 6-9 sophomore who missed the first 13 games of last season with an injury. As a freshman, 6-foot-8 Derrick Randall (2.5, 2.4) helped showed some promise around the basket. Six-foot-8 senior Austin Johnson (4.1, 2.1) has been a veteran role player in the frontcourt. Six-foot-9 sophomore Greg Lewis is also available. Who’s Missing Forward Gilvydas Biruta, who averaged 9.7 points and 5.3 rebounds, transferred. He was only RU player to start every game last season.

Storylines Rice has high hopes for forward Wally Judge to offer immediate help. A transfer from Kansas State, the 6-9, 250-pound forward is a former McDonald’s All-America prep player. He averaged 5.5 points and 3.8 rebounds while playing 15.2 minutes per game two seasons ago at Kansas State. Another newcomer, 6-5 wing Vincent Garrett, is a junior college transfer who is considered a strong rebounder and scorer. Despite its still-young roster, Rutgers returns 10 of its top 12 players from a year ago. The Scarlet Knights appear to have an improving team that wants to make headline-grabbing victories more than an occasional occurrence.

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture Last season, the Red Storm had to replace virtually their entire team because of graduation. Then, coach Steve Lavin was not able to coach in most games during his recovery period from cancer surgery. Still, St. John’s managed to compile a 13-19 mark overall and a 6-12 record in the BIG EAST. Lavin has brought in another large recruiting class to help rebuild the roster. The backcourt is in some experienced hands. Some fresh faces in the frontcourt will be counted on to offer some immediate help.

Who’s Back Guard D’Angelo Harrison was the BIG EAST’s top freshman scorer with a 17.0 average last year. He was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. Phil Greene was another freshman who was thrown into the BIG EAST fire. The 6-foot-2 point guard averaged 7.6 points and 3.0 assists. Sir’Dominic Pointer started 25 games and averaged 6.6 points and 4.6 boards, playing mostly at shooting guard and small forward. Rugged 6-8 forward God’sgift Achiuwa came in as a junior college transfer and posted averages of 9.4 points and 5.8 rebounds while starting 18 games.

Who’s Missing Forward Moe Harkless won the BIG EAST Rookie of the Year award after averaging 15.5 points and 8.6 rebounds. He was the league’s secondhighest scoring freshman and the top rookie rebounder. He left for the NBA and was a first-round draft choice.

Storylines The Red Storm are still young, but they should have more versatility this season. The backcourt appears stable with Harrison, Greene and Pointer. Six-foot-9 freshman Chris Obekpa is expected to make a strong run at a starting spot at center. Six-foot-8 freshman JaKarr Sampson could be a starter at power forward. He was a 2011-12 recruit, but took in another year of prep school. Six-foot-9 junior college transfer Orlando Sanchez can play either forward position. Some backcourt depth will come from 6-foot-6 Marco Bourgault, 6-foot-4 Felix Balamou and 6-foot-3 point guard Jamal Branch, a transfer from Texas A&M. 2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture Coach Kevin Willard guided the Pirates into the NIT last season, his second year at the Seton Hall helm. The team’s top scorers, seniors Jordan Theodore and Herb Pope, have departed, but Willard believes two quality transfers will help his young nucleus and push the Pirates higher in the league standings. After a 15-2 start, the 2011-12 squad finished 21-8 overall and 8-10 in the BIG EAST. The Pirates made it into the national polls for the first time in 11 years.

Who’s Back Fuquan Edwin, a 6-foot-6 wing, emerged as one of the BIG EAST’s most versatile players as a sophomore last season. He averaged 12.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and led the league with a 3.0 steals mark. Edwin also earned a reputation as one the BIG EAST’s top defenders. Aaron Cosby won a starting guard spot as a freshman and averaged 7.9 points. He was the top 3-point shooting threat, making 37.7 percent. Patrick Auda, a 6-foot-9 junior, averaged 6.8 points and 4.0 rebounds as a starting forward. The Pirates got reserve help from rookies Brandon Mobley (5.6, 4.4) at forward and Haralds Karlis (3.2) and Freddie Wilson (1.8) at guard. Backup center Aaron Geramipoor (1.4, 2.2), a 6-foot11 junior, also returns.

Who’s Missing Theodore put together an excellent senior season. He averaged 16.1 points and was second in the BIG EAST with a 6.6 assist average. Theodore was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection. Pope finished second in the conference in rebounding with a 10.4 average. He also averaged 15.1 points.

Storylines The Pirates are anxious to get 6-foot-6 Brian Oliver and 6-foot-9 Gene Teague, a pair of junior transfers who sat out last season, on the floor. Oliver is a dynamic scorer who is expected to be one of the top offensive threats. Teague is a bruising forward who will contribute immediately in the paint. Also, 6-foot-4 guard Kyle Smith has transferred from Iona as a graduate student and will have one season of eligibility. He is an able 3-point threat. If Edwin continues to improve, he should be one of the top players in the conference. Continued progress by Cosby, Auda and Mobley could help give Seton Hall its first winning season in league play since 2005-06.

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture Last season, the Bulls were arguably the biggest surprise in the league. Coach Stan Heath discovered a formula how to win close games with strong defense and a steely freshman point guard. Some of the results were program firsts. The Bulls set a conference record in scoring defense, allowing only 56.9 ppg in league games. No player averaged in double figures. USF finished 22-14 overall – a school record for wins -- and a bestever 12-6 BIG EAST mark. Heath was the BIG EAST Coach of the Year. The Bulls made the NCAA tournament for first time since 1993 and won two games. USF had never won an NCAA tourney game.

Who’s Back Anthony Collins was the rookie point guard who emerged as one of the league’s top young players. He averaged 9.0 points and 3.4 assists. Six-foot-4 senior Jawanza Poland averaged 8.0 points while showing tremendous athletic ability. Victor Rudd, Jr., is a 6-foot-9 junior forward who averaged 9.3 points and 4.8 rebounds. He came on strong for the Bulls late in the season. Sixfoot-eight senior forward Toarlyn Fitzpatrick is a veteran with some starting experienced and a surprisingly good 3-point shooter. He made 41.2 percent from beyond the arc. Shaun Noriega, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard, can be a dangerous 3-point threat. Guard LaVonte Dority (3.0) played 15.1 minutes per game as a reserve.

Who’s Missing Forward Augustus Gilchrist was the team’s leader scorer, though only with a 9.5 average. He pulled down 5.0 boards. Ron Anderson, Jr. was a dependable forward who averaged 6.9 points and 5.5 rebounds. Guard Hugh Robertson (6.5, 4.3) was a strong helper on defense. Backup point guard Blake Nash (3.4) transferred.

Storylines Heath has three starters to replace, but still has four other players who averaged at least 22 minutes per game of playing time. Only three opponents reached 70 points last season against the Bulls and Heath wants to maintain the strong defensive look, though he won’t mind some improvement on the offensive end. Six-foot-11 Waverly Austin comes in as a first team junior college all-America pick. Freshman Javontae Hawkins can help with the perimeter shooting. Junior college transfer Musa Abdul-Aleem, who will be a sophomore, is a shooting guard candidate who may press for a starting position. Zach LeDay, a 6-foot7 freshman, will compete at forward. At center, 7-foot-3 Jordan Omogbehin was redshirted for medical reasons as a freshman last season. Six-foot-5 freshman Martino Brock is a point guard candidate.

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture Last season, the Orange rolled up a 34-3 mark, the best record and most wins in school history. They won the BIG EAST regular-season crown with a 17-1 record and stayed in the top five in the national polls every week of the season. The season ended with a loss to Ohio State in the East Region final. Coach Jim Boeheim recorded his 32nd 20-win season, the most in college basketball history under one coach. For 2012-13, SU will have to find replacements for four outstanding players, forward Kris Joseph, guards Dion Waiters and Scoop Jardine and center Fab Melo. Still, most college basketball observers see another outstanding season ahead.

Who’s Back Dependable guard Brandon Triche returns for his senior year. A starter throughout his career, he averaged 9.4 points last season. Forward C.J. Fair started only nine games last year as a sophomore, but figures to earn starting duty this season. He played starter’s minutes last season, averaging 26.4 minutes and emerged as an athletic forward who averaged 8.5 points and 5.4 boards. James Southerland came on strong late in the season. The forward averaged 6.8 points and became a formidable 3-point threat. He should see more playing time as a senior. Rakeem Christmas was a starter as a freshman last season, though he averaged only 11.5 minutes. He averaged 2.8 points and 2.9 rebounds while showing to be a very strong athletic presence near the basket. Baye Keita (2.3, 2.5)

played similar minutes to Christmas and showed similar athletic duty, excelling on the defensive end. Guard Michael Carter-Williams (2.7) had trouble wedging himself into the guard rotation as a freshman, but showed exciting promise. Trevor Cooney, a promising shooting guard, was redshirted. Who’s Missing Joseph was an All-BIG EAST Second Team pick after averaging a team-high 13.4 points. Waiters scored at a 12.6 clip, made All-BIG EAST Third Team and was chosen BIG EAST Sixth Man of the Year. Melo was selected BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year. He blocked 2.9 shots per game. Jardine averaged 8.9 points and a teamleading 4.9 assists.

Storylines With four quality players lost from last year’s squad, prognosticators will not predict another 34-3 season, but the Orange will still be counted on for another stellar run. Some top reserves appear ready to accept larger roles this season. Triche will be the steadying influence in the backcourt. Two freshman forwards, DaJuan Coleman and Jerami Grant will press for immediate playing time near the basket. Grant, the brother of Notre Dame’s Jerian Grant, might be another athletic wing in a long line of Syracuse players at the small forward spot. He played this summer on the USA Basketball U18 Team. The Orange won with balance last year. Joseph’s team-high scoring average was only 20th in the BIG EAST.

2012-13 PREVIEW The Big Picture After seven straight 20-win seasons and seven straight NCAA invitations, the Wildcats hit a bump in the road last year. Villanova stumbled to a 13-19 overall record and a 5-13 BIG EAST mark. Coach Jay Wright wants his 2012-13 squad to regain its stellar reputation in the grit and tenacity department. An improvement in defense is definitely needed. Last season, the Wildcats were 15th in scoring defense in league games, allowing 75.6 ppg. Despite losing their top two scorers, Villanova expects to be better because of new blood in the backcourt and more experience and depth in the frontcourt.

Who’s Back Center Mouphtaou Yarou returns for his senior season. He is the team’s top returning scorer, averaging 11.3 points. The 6-foot-10 center led VU with an 8.2 rebounding mark. Yarou often teamed with 6-foot-11 Maurice Sutton at power forward to form a strong rebounding and shot-blocking duo. On the wing, JayVaughn Pinkston averaged 9.6 points and 5.2 boards as a freshman and appears ready to emerge as one of the BIG EAST’s top players. Junior James Bell will be angling for time at both forward spots. The team captain started 18 games last year and averaged 7.0 points and 3.8 rebounds, though his career has been slowed by injuries. Both starting guard positions are open with sophomores Ty Johnson, Darrun Hilliard and Achraf Yacoubou vieing for more playing time. All three earned some starting duty as freshmen.

Who’s Missing The guard tandem of Maalik Wayns and Dominic Cheek left after their junior seasons. Wayns was fourth in the BIG EAST in scoring with a 17.6 average. He led the league in free throw shooting, making 89.2 percent. An All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, Wayns also averaged 4.6 assists. Cheek averaged 12.5 points and led the squad with 57 3-pointers.

Storylines The Wildcat backcourt will have a new look in 2012-13. Junior Tony Chennault, a transfer from Wake Forest who will be eligible immediately, could grab one of the starting spots. He averaged 9.2 points last season and was a strong defender. Freshman Ryan Arcidiacono may be starting alongside Chennault. He is a point guard with long-range shooting skills. Johnson, Hilliard and Yacoubou will make it a strong competition at guard. Pinkston should continue to progress on the wing. If Bell can stay healthy, the frontcourt will be deeper and will help Villanova return to postseason play.
