PNG clashes with Barrick, Zijin over fate of Porgera mine COURT
| PM threatens to end mining lease over social and environmental concerns BY CECILIA JAMASMIE MINING.com
B
arrick Gold (TSX: ABX; NYSE: GOLD) welcomed a court ruling on May 1 ordering the government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to review a requested lease extension for the Porgera gold mine. The Canadian gold producer and its Chinese partner, Zijin Mining, temporarily halted operations at the mine in Enga Province a week ago, following Prime Minister James Marape’s decision not to renew Porgera’s long-sought lease. The government hit back on April 27, saying it would be “forced” to take immediate control of the mine if it remains closed during the transition period. State-owned Zijin followed suit. It said that if PNG didn’t conduct negotiations to extend the mining lease in good faith, the issue could impair the country’s relations with China. See BARRICK / 2 PM40069240

OVID-19 has impacted the mining industry across the globe as governments enforce lockdowns and quarantines and companies halt operations because workers and contractors can’t get on-site due to restrictions. S&P Global Market Intelligence in a new report tallies the impact of these mine closures, showing Africa and the Americas hardest hit in terms of the number of suspended operations. South Africa had closed 54 mines See COVID-19 / 2
