• GEELONG: Gary Ablett. Two Brownlow medals. Six club champion awards. Eight All Australians. A man with that resume surely has nothing to prove - but not in Ablett’s intriguing case. Will his second coming at Geelong confirm him as a true legend or offer evidence he’s a fading force?

• RICHMOND: Reece Conca. Surely it’s make or break time for the talented yet sporadic 86-gamer, who falls off-contract at season’s end. Will he finally live up to his hype as a No.6 draft pick, and can he get through a season without injury? • ESSENDON: Jake Stringer. Few footballers will be under the microscope this year like the exBulldog and 2015 All Australian. At his best, a breathtaking match-winner; at his worst, a disinterested wanderer. Which Stringer will turn up? ... continued page 54 >>

Night firebomb trial in national first

MAN ‘KICKED CHEVY CHASE IN SELF-DEFENCE’

A A

n Australia-first trial in Victoria will determine whether firefighting aircraft can be used to battle blazes at night, potentially saving lives. The national trial, based at Ballarat Airport, combines technology including infrared systems and night-vision goggles with firebombing helicopters for the first time. Lives and property could be better protected during major bushfires if the trial is successful, Emergency Management Commissioner

Craig Lapsley said. “Fighting fires in the dark hours, in the cooler part of the night or in the early parts of the morning, would enable us to get on top of fires quicker, particularly those in remote parts of Victoria where access may be difficult,” he said in a statement on Monday. “We are very keen to trial this capability, and understand how it would work in a system, and how we would fly and make it safe to do so.” The trial, which has been

New York man says he kicked Chevy Chase in self-defence after the US comedian climbed into a vehicle and tried to punch him during a profanity-laced traffic dispute. Chase told police he was cut off by another driver on February 9. Thinking his car might be damaged, he followed the car across the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Both drivers pulled over in South Nyack. A truck passenger, Michael Landrio, told the New York Post that the former Saturday Night Live star got into their vehicle and tried to punch him. Landrio said that’s when he kicked Chase, sending him flying. A spokeswoman for Chase said the actor didn’t get into the vehicle and didn’t try to attack Landrio.

approved by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, will involve two aircraft, including one which will drop water on controlled fires after dark. Mr Lapsley said the results would be used to inform operations in other states and territories. Firefighting aircraft could take to the sky at night by next summer in Victoria, if the test is successful. Acting Premier James Merlino said Victoria was a global leader in firefighting.

VIC DRUG ACCUSED SEEKS MANSION REHAB

A

Melbourne man allegedly caught with a car-load of drugs en route to a dance festival wants to be released on bail to live in a “beautiful” mansion at an exclusive rehabilitation centre. Polysubstance addict Martin Mahoney, 35, was stopped at a service station near Ballarat in January and police allegedly found a variety of illicit drugs in his car. It’s alleged the drugs, which included cocaine, cannabis and MDMA, were bound for the four-day Rainbow Serpent Festival at Lexton. Mahoney, who operates a festival ‘glamping’ business, was arrested and charged with drug trafficking, He faced the Supreme Court on Friday for a bail application, seeking release from custody to stay at Bayside Private rehab in Melbourne’s south. Clients at the centre live in a two-storey “mansion” with a tennis court and swimming pool.

ALMOST 900 FIREARMS SEIZED IN QLD A Aussie surfers invent rubbish bin for sea

T

wo Aussie surfers have invented a rubbish bin for the sea and after finding success in Europe, will bring the you-beaut creation Down Under. The Seabin is a simple idea, similar to a rubbish bin in appearance, but fitted with a pump to draw in nearby floating trash. The concept started when Pete Ceglinski and Andrew Turton, both keen surfers, grew tired of spotting rubbish

in the waves. “Andrew was sick of being out there surrounded by plastic and pollution,” Mr Ceglinski told AAP. “He thought ‘we have rubbish bins on land, why can’t we have them in the water?’'” Sitting on the water surface, each bin has the potential to vacuum up more than 1.5 tonnes of rubbish and debris from harbours, marinas and ports each year.

lmost 900 weapons have been seized in Queensland this month as police attempt to reduce the number of illegal firearms and related offences ahead of the Commonwealth Games. Police Minister Mark Ryan and Commissioner Ian Stewart announced 869 weapons had been seized since February 1 as part of Operation Quebec Camouflage. Commissioner Stewart said police regularly conducted operations to seize illegal firearms but with the Gold Coast Games starting on April 4 they had stepped them up. “It’s not a coincidence that we’re about to go into the largest

sporting event in Australia for this decade,” he told reporters in Brisbane on Monday. “It is very satisfying to have removed these firearms from the criminal environment. “But can I say that this is always targeted (by police) in order to make Queensland safer.” Police Minister Mark Ryan said the operation was a great success, however reiterated there were around 900,000 firearms in Queensland perfectly legally. “As long as guns are lawfully owned under the weapons act, people are entitled to access to those guns,” Mr Ryan said. “The number we are concerned about is the number of illegal weapons in the state.”

HIGHLIGHTER PENS USED TO SMUGGLE DRUGS Elvis’ daughter

A

27-year-old man has been refused bail after he was arrested for importing hundreds of kilograms of ephedrine in a shipment of highlighter pens into Sydney from China. Australian Border Force (ABF) agents detected “anomalies” after they x-rayed five pallets of stationery in Sydney on February 10. The shipment of 21,000 highlighters contained nearly 300kg of ephedrine powder, the precursor chemical to the drug ice. NSW Police will allege in court the chemicals could have made about 2.4 million hits of ice with a street value of around $120 million. ABF agents and the police Drug and Firearms Squad then delivered dummy packages to a storage facility in Sydney’s inner west. Three men, aged 26, 27 and 34, were arrested when they allegedly arrived to pick up the shipment. Investigators then raided a home at Glebe where they seized evidence relating to the case. The 27-year-old Yuhui Li, believed to be a Chinese

‘broke’, suing ex-manager

L

National, was charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled precursor. ABF Investigations Superintendent Garry Low said the case “highlights” the complex and creative methods drug importers were using to try and bypass the border. “It should serve as a warning,” he told reporters in Sydney on Monday. “We’ve upgraded our (x-ray) facilities but we are also vigilant in what we’re doing.” While the other two men were released without charge, Detective Superintendent Peter McErlain said further charges

were possible as investigators looked “up, down and sideways” to determine Li’s place in the criminal supply chain. “The seizure, last week, consisted of around two and a half million ice hits which would absolutely devastate Sydney, NSW’s regional areas if it was allowed to get out on the street,” he said. Li was refused bail when he appeared in Parramatta Local Court on Saturday and is expected to reappear at Central Local Court on Wednesday. He faces a maximum 25 years in prison as well as a fine of $900,000 if found guilty.

isa Marie Presley, the only daughter of Elvis Presley, says she is facing financial ruin and has filed a $US100 million ($A140 million) lawsuit accusing her former business manager of negligence and mismanaging her finances. Her former manager has filed his own lawsuit, accusing Presley, 50, of squandering her famous father’s inheritance because of her lavish lifestyle. The lawsuit seeks $US800,000 ($A1.1 million) in unpaid bills. The dueling lawsuits, filed earlier this week in Los Angeles Superior Court, follow the collapse in 2016 of Presley’s fourth marriage and her announcement that she was $US16 million ($A22 million) in debt. Presley was just 9 years old when Elvis died in 1977, leaving her his sole heir. Her affairs have been managed by Barry Siegel since 1993, when she came into her inheritance through a trust.

Cocaine charge dropped against Hunt

C

ode-hopping footballer Karmichael Hunt has avoided a conviction for possessing cocaine but his future remains unclear after his latest court matter was brought to an end. Prosecutors on Monday told Brisbane Magistrates Court there was insufficient evidence to prosecute the 31-year-old Wallabies player over allegations he was caught with cocaine in Fortitude Valley on December 30. Following the withdrawal of that charge, Hunt pleaded guilty to possessing alprazolam - a Xanax tablet - and for failing to attend a police station when required a week later. He was fined $600 but no conviction was recorded. During the brief hearing Hunt’s lawyer Adam Magill said a conviction would “stifle” Hunt’s

Disability pension spend to fall $4.8 bil

ability to travel overseas to play sport. Magistrate Barry Cosgrove agreed and warned Hunt he had to be beyond reproach. “You are a person in the public eye,” he said. Mr Magill said Hunt had been unintentionally carrying the Xanax in the right pocket of his shorts when he was out. Hunt had the prescription medication pill to help deal with stress and anxiety, the court heard. “He can’t sleep and he had a tablet for that purpose,” Mr Magill said. In explaining why his client had failed to return to the Fortitude Valley police station to provide fingerprints within a week of the charges, Mr Magill said he had gone into a self-imposed lockdown and “it simply slipped

his memory”. But when Mr Magill was contacted by police he phoned Hunt, who went to police immediately, the court heard. Outside court, Mr Magill said it had been a stressful period for Hunt and his family. “It’s been hanging over his head for a few weeks,” he told reporters. The utility back, who played six Tests for the Wallabies last year, had been stood down by the Queensland Reds after the incident and has been training by himself. When asked about Hunt’s sporting future, just four days before the start of the Super Rugby season, Mr Magill said it was still unknown. “He’s still got to make some inquiries with his manager,” he said.

ncome support for Australians living with permanent disabilities is projected to cost almost $4.8 billion less in 10 years time, as the government stems the flow of people onto the payments. The disability support

pension covers roughly 760,000 recipients and is one of the biggest areas of federal government spending, costing $16.3 billion or 10.6 per cent of the social security budget in the past year. But in a report released on

I

Hunt played seven seasons in the NRL with the Brisbane Broncos and four in the AFL with the Gold Coast Suns before switching to rugby for the start of the 2015 campaign. Not long after starting with the Reds he was charged with four counts of drug possession and suspended for six weeks, fined $30,000, stripped of the vice-captaincy and instructed to undergo counselling. He admitted it as a “terrible mistake” but denied he had a drug problem. Tuesday, the Parliamentary Budget Office has significantly revised down its medium-term projections for spending on the pension, tipping it will average one per cent annual real growth in 2027-28.

Call to BAN JUNK at supermarket checkouts P ublic health experts are calling for Australia’s supermarket giants to remove all junk food and soft drinks from their checkouts. A first-of-its-kind study conducted by the Global Obesity Centre at Deakin University has assessed the nutrition policies of Australia’s major supermarkets, finding they could be doing much more to encourage healthy eating. “Unhealthy diets and obesity are leading contributors to poor health in Australia. Tackling the issue requires a comprehensive societal response, including government policy and widescale action from the food industry, which includes our supermarkets,” lead author Associate Professor Gary Sacks said. Researchers rated the policies of Woolworths, Coles, Aldi and IGA out of 100 in the review which examined six key areas including nutrition labelling, promotion practices and product accessibility. The data included publicly available information collected until the end of 2017 plus policy information provided by the retailers. The information was then assessed using the ‘Business Impact Assessment - Obesity and Population Nutrition tool’ developed by INFORMAS, a global network of public health researchers that monitor food environments worldwide. Woolworths ranked the highest, scoring 46 out of 100, while IGA scored just eight points. “Their food labelling was where they scored pretty well, most of the supermarkets have committed to rollingout the government’s Health Star Rating system that makes it easy to see which products are healthy,” Prof Sacks said. Woolworths also scored “okay” when it came to promoting healthy food, but they

“fell down” due to the heavy promotion of unhealthy food, Prof Sacks said. “The supermarkets are quite vocal about being healthy places to shop but the reality is once you are in the store there is heaps of promotion of unhealthy food,” he said. “The end-of-aisle displays are typically filled with unhealthy products, it’s just chocolate and soft drinks at the checkouts; so it’s just really hard to stick to a nice healthy basket of food when you are surrounded by all of that.” In the UK several supermarkets have committed to providing healthy checkouts with no chocolates, soft drinks or lollies on display and the researchers are calling for Australia to follow suit. “The key is that those supermarkets have done it which means it’s feasible, they haven’t gone out of business and that is evidence that supermarkets can make that move and they are still viable as a business,” said Prof Sacks. The researchers have also called for the supermarkets to have fewer price discounts on chocolates and chips and instead make healthy, fresh produce for affordable.

VIC HOSPITAL TAKES STAND AGAINST VIOLENCE

F

ootage of a hostile patient throwing a chair at terrified staff has been released by a Melbourne hospital to raise awareness of increasing violence and aggression in the emergency department. The video from Royal Melbourne Hospital was released on Monday to highlight the daily harassment and abuse staff cop at work, including almost 7500 incidents last year. The collection of CCTV

footage and re-enactments, show patients hurling chairs at workers, throwing urine-filled bedpans on the floor and ripping computers from desks. In one incident, a man attempts to smash through a glass door with a chair to reach workers. “In healthcare we sometimes tend to think that occupational violence and aggression is ‘just part of the job’,” department manager Susan Harding said.

EASY ON THE FRIES: JAPAN WARNS BALD PEOPLE

J

apanese scientists have warned eating french fries will not cure baldness, after research was published suggesting that chemicals used in cooking fried potatoes could help fight hair loss. A research team at Yokohama National University succeeded in producing clusters of 5000 hair follicle germs (HFGs), the base organs that produce hair, with the aid of dimethylpolysiloxane, a material that was key to cultivating large numbers of HFGs. The team also succeeded in growing hair on the backs of mice after transplantation in a relatively short period of time. After dimethylpolysiloxane was reported as being used in oil to fry potatoes, researchers received a number of inquiries asking how many french fries people should eat to cure baldness. “No matter how many fried

potatoes you eat, you’ll never grow more hair. That’s a total misunderstanding that’s gone viral,” lead researcher Junji Fukuda told Reuters. Fukuda said the research, published in the journal Biomaterials this month, was a breakthrough as scientists had previously struggled to produce the large quantities of HFGs needed to generate significant hair growth. “Up until now we’ve only been able to produce a few dozen hair follicle germs at a time, but with this new technology we’ve developed a simple method to produce hundreds and thousands,” Fukuda said. The team have also received many serious inquiries from researchers and people seeking hair-regenerative medicine to offer their cells to test and develop the research, he said.

VIC SPRINKLER FITTER HAD BIG CANNABIS CROP

A

Melbourne fire sprinkler fitter has been jailed for for growing a “sophisticated” hydroponic cannabis crop in his home, and stealing electricity to run it. Jamel Mohtadi, 32, was arrested in May after police raided his two-storey home, finding 64 cannabis plants growing under lamps. The plants, weighing nearly 80kg, were growing in two bedrooms and an open plan living and dining room. An electricity bypass had also been set up so the power used was not recorded by authorities. But Mohtadi was not the mastermind behind the crop. He was a cocaine addict with a large debt to his drug supplier when he struck a deal to host a crop in his home. “It was a sophisticated set up,” County Court Judge Meryl Sexton said. “They had keys to your house and came with a truck and set everything up.” Mohtadi's role was to turn the lamps on and off, and keep the plants fed and watered. “You ensured the conditions were optimal for continued

growth - water, food and light,” Judge Sexton said. The organisers of the operation have not been identified. “The part you played kept the principal cultivators at arms length, and in fact allowed them to avoid detection,” the judge said. Mohtadi was jailed for nearly four years on Friday after pleading guilty to cultivating cannabis, stealing electricity, and drug possession. He was not home when police raided his house in May, but turned himself in the same day. At the time Mohtadi was a fire services technician and engineer, working for his brother. The judge commended his progress in custody where he has a paid job as a billet and has helped other inmates with drug issues. She said he had “very good” prospects of rehabilitation upon his release from jail, given he stays away from drugs. Mohtadi was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison with a non-parole period of 20 months.

Dr Matthew Falder, 29, a geophysicist employed as a researcher at Birmingham University in central England, has now been jailed for 32 years after admitting 137 offences, including encouraging the rape of a four-year-old boy. He duped victims by masquerading as a depressed female artist on forums and mainstream online advertising websites. He fooled them into sending him naked or partially clothed images of themselves before blackmailing them into sending more humiliating images by threatening to send the original pictures to their family, friends and employers. Using the names “evilmind” and “666devil”, he then distributed the images on "hurt core" websites, hidden forums devoted to discussing rape, murder, sadism, torture, pedophilia, blackmail and degradation. Britain’s National Crime Agency said he approached more than 300 people worldwide, with 45 victims represented in the charges against him. The NCA set up a global task force with law enforcement officials from the United States, Australia and Europol and

enlisted the help of the UK’s eavesdropping spy agency GCHQ during a four-year hunt to track down Falder, who had used specialist anonymising techniques to remain hidden. He was finally arrested in June last year and in October pleaded guilty to 137 charges which included encouraging rape, inciting sexual exploitation, making indecent images of children and voyeurism. “It is a tale of ever-increasing depravity,” Judge Philip Parker said as he sentenced Falder at Birmingham Crown Court on Monday. "The effects on the girls, women and men were devastating. The damage is ongoing for these individuals. It will never end. Time and again people begged you to stop. Time and again you ramped up the pressure." At least three of the victims, who ranged in age from early teens to people in their 30s, tried to take their own lives. Falder, a graduate of Cambridge University, also secretly filmed adults he knew when they were in the shower using hidden cameras he had installed at a number of locations. “Dr Matthew Falder thought he wouldn’t be caught,” said NCA operations strategic lead Matthew Long. “He would stop at nothing to exploit (the victims), to make them feel sad, humiliated and unhappy. Ultimately that has devastated some people’s lives.”

Craft beer healthier than red wine: study

H

ipsters rejoice - your craft beer may actually be healthier than a glass of red wine, a new study has found. Work by Associate Professor Mike McCullough, at California’s Polytechnic State University, has found craft beer has health benefits overlooked by drinkers. “We all know that a glass of red wine is good for you, but it turns outs a pint of craft beer is better, it has got more good things in it,” Professor McCullough told AAP. Those good things include niacin, know as vitamin B3, and brewers yeast which is fantastic for lowering bad cholesterol. The basic premise and reason craft beer is healthier than mass

produced beer is that it is less pasteurised, Prof McCullough said. “Your instances of heart disease and your instances of type 2 diabetes decreases on an amount that’s comparable, if not a little bit more, than if you are drinking red wine.” He said science had long told us a glass of red a day helped reduce the risk of problems including heart disease and dementia. But he said the health benefits of craft beers were overlooked because it was associated with an unhealthy lifestyle. “You associate a beer drinker’s diet with nachos and unhealthy

eating habits but the trend with more differentiated beer and higher-end beer is that you are eating it with meals,” Prof McCullough said. There has been an explosion in the production and consumption of craft beers over the past five years, with a recent report estimating the industry is worth $500 million a year in Australia. Prof McCullough will present his findings at the annual conference of Australasian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society in Adelaide.

Fry, 60, shared the news in a 13 minute long video posted on his Twitter page, alongside which he wrote: “For the last 2 months I’ve been in the throes of a rather unwelcome and unexpected adventure. “I’m sorry I haven’t felt able to talk about it till now, but here I am explaining what has been going on.” In the video, he said it was “all very personal and undignified so I might as well bite the bullet”, before explaining that he had seen his doctor in December in order to get a flu jab.

procession of drones has replaced models on the runway at a Dolce & Gabbana show at Milan Fashion week. The fashion crowd, including Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, was mystified and then miffed when the show was delayed by repeated announcements that all Wi-Fi connections needed to be turned off. Then, 45 minutes after the scheduled start time, relief at the sound of opening music turned quickly to awe as the doors of the mocked-up church facade opened and out flew a series of drones. Each carried one of the fashion house’s quilted leather handbags of the season, named Devotion and featuring a heart-shaped closure.

Winners crowned in NSW mullet contest P roud mullet wearers from across Australia have converged on a country pub in NSW’s Hunter Valley to crown a champion of the infamous hairstyle. Hundreds of people made the journey to Kurri Kurri’s Chelmsford Hotel on Saturday for the inaugural Mulletfest - a celebration of the 1980’s hairstyle. A victor was crowned in five categories - best everyday, ranga, junior, grubby and ladies mullet. From those winners a best of the best winner emerged - Shane “Shag” Hanrahan of nearby Denman. “This is the first trophy I’ve ever had,” he told AAP after drinking Jim Beam from the silver cup. “I can’t believe it.” Mr Hanrahan, whose waistlength mullet has gone uncut since 1986, said his wife Julie who is a hairdresser - signed him up for the festival. He celebrated the win by

leading the band, the Stunned Mullets, in a rendition of Dirty Deeds by AC/DC. Controversy swept through the pub after the judges failed to give crowd favourite, Victorian potato farmer and coal miner Laurie Manuel, a place in the finals. “You get up on stage and you think you’re tough with the mullet,” Auburn everyday mullet contender Brad Macmillan said. “But, when I look at (Laurie) all I feel is envy.” But Mr Manuel, who flew his luscious hair from Gippsland to Kurri Kurri, said he was just happy to be a part of the festival. “I just want the young guys to get inspiration from me,” he said. “Even though you’re 60 years old you can have a really good mullet.” “Any young guys get started yesterday - get a mullet and keep

He said he wished his sons, sporting mullet wigs to support their dad, had followed in his footsteps. “It’s the family’s pride,” his son Paul said. “Dad wears the mane of the family - it’s like a lion’s mane. It’s a symbol of his life and it’s been around all of his life. “And I haven’t grown one just yet but, before they put the last nail in my coffin, I’ll have a mullet - just for the old man.” The festival is expected to return next year.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says President Donald Trump remains committed to achieving the “complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation” of the peninsula. Sanders says the US, South Korea and others agree denuclearisation must be the result of any dialogue with North Korea. Her statement comes in response to a statement earlier Sunday from the presidential office of Olympic host South Korea saying that North Korea had expressed willingness to hold talks with the US Sanders says Trump’s “maximum pressure campaign” must continue until North Korea abandons its nuclear and missile programs. BATTERY BOOM

backing Australia's power A ustralians are in love with batteries and the bond of storage is only expected to grow stronger over coming years. A new report from the Climate Council finds the market for household batteries tripled in 2017, with more than 20,000 new installations. The year before, just 6750 households put in batteries. As well, South Australia installed the high-profile Tesla mega battery and now Victoria, Queensland and the Northern

Territory are following suit, while the federal, Queensland and Tasmanian governments are considering developing pumped hydro storage projects. The council expects the storage boom to continue as prices drop. The cost of lithium-ion batteries has fallen by 80 per cent over the past seven years and is predicted to at least halve again by 2025. This makes batteries and other forms of storage increasingly competitive with peaking gas plants - especially with gas prices

soaring - for underpinning renewable energy generation. “Australia’s renewables and battery storage boom will keep the nation’s power grid fully charged, especially during extreme weather events, such as summer heatwaves,” climate councillor Andrew Stock said. “We live in one of the sunniest and windiest countries in the world, so pairing affordable renewables with energy storage

day after plans to scuttle Melbourne’s proposed Apple flagship store failed, the government says it is pushing on with the controversial development. Planning Minister Richard Wynne has thrust his support behind the tech store at Federation Square after a Greens upper-house motion to block it was struck down 34-4. Despite an online petition to abandon the plan attracting more than 53,000 signatures, Mr Wynne reaffirmed the Andrews government’s commitment to the project. “The Apple store is going ahead,” he told ABC radio. “We are continuing to have very productive conversations

“...WOULD REQUIRE PARTIAL DEMOLITION OF FEDERATION SQUARE” with the City of Melbourne around some design modifications.” The proposal would see the city’s central riverside precinct become home to the southern hemisphere’s only flagship Apple store but would require partial demolition of Federation Square. “This will open up the

square,” Mr Wynne said. “I’ve looked very carefully at the Apple development. It is a good development for the city and indeed the original architect for Federation Square not only endorsed the plan ... (so) did the state architect.” But the Greens are not backing down. “This fight isn’t over. We’ll continue building

public support to show the Andrews government exactly how unpopular this decision is,” Member for Melbourne Ellen Sandell said. Coalition members in the upper house did not vote in favour of the Greens’ motion despite Opposition Leader Matthew Guy previously calling the plan “an abomination”.

FRIDGES, TV’S AT RISK FROM CYBERCRIMINALS Australian uni banks on

C

omputers and mobile phones are not the only devices likely to be targeted by cyber-criminals, with webcams, televisions and even fridges at risk, Interpol warns. While many tech users are generally aware of the threat cyber criminals can pose to PCs and mobile phones, the international police organisation is highlighting how all devices which can connect to the internet - known as the Internet of Things (IoT) - are potentially at risk of a cyber attack. It says cyber attacks targeting IoTs, which can include smart home devices, have increased significantly in the past two years and means police and cyber investigators are having

to develop their skills to learn how to collect evidence from connected devices other than computers and phones. To help tackle this new threat, 43 investigators and digital forensics experts from 23 countries took part in investigating a simulated cyberattack on a bank launched through an IoT device as part of Interpol’s latest Digital Security Challenge. In the scenario, cybercriminals attacked a bank in an attempt to steal large sums of money, with investigators discovering malware installed by the criminals was contained in an email attachment sent via a hacked webcam - making it harder to identify the source of the attack.

ber is redefining the nature of flexible work and putting more power into the hands of its drivers, officials from the ride-sharing app have told a Senate committee. Uber Australia general manager David Rohrsheim told a public hearing into the future of work and workers that “flexibility” had scared staff in the past, as it usually meant unpredictable shifts or hours. “Flexibility in our world means these drivers can log on whenever they want,” Mr Rohrsheim told senators in Sydney on Wednesday. “They can do it full

BLOCKCHAIN BOOM A

n Australian university is banking on Blockchain, the technology behind the lucrative yet volatile cryptocurrency industry, by launching a nation-first course in the emerging sector. Australia’s first short course on Blockchain strategy, aiming to educate the nation’s next wave of tech start-up entrepreneurs, will take flight on Tuesday at Melbourne’s RMIT University. “Blockchain is now becoming a core part of contemporary digital literacy,” Vice Chancellor Martin Bean said. The online eight-week program is set to begin in mid-March with students given the chance to hear from global experts in the growing space. Blockchain is a decentralised, shared ledger that - with the help of complicated cryptography - records transactions in a verifiable, secure and permanent way. Before Blockchain’s birth in 2008, it was impossible to place value on virtual currencies like Bitcoin as there was no way of distinguishing a legitimate digital coin from a copy.

The same principal applies to managing real money digitally, with banks slowly grasping Blockchain’s potential benefits as a faster, inexpensive and autonomous system. “There is a real demand for Blockchain training and a skills gap in the market that needs to be addressed,” Alan Tsen, the Melbourne manager of financial tech company Stone and Chalk, said. As demand presently outstrips supply in the US, there is a desperate need for more programmers in the growing industry predicted to be worth $176 billion by 2025, according to Gartner Research. Aside from banking, the database system has potential applications for tracking the ownership history of realworld items, electronic voting, cybersecurity and electricity management. In 2017, the Australian government tipped in $2.57 million to help power a cuttingedge start-up project that could make peer-to-peer solar energy trading a reality.

time, or they can stop doing it for a couple of months, but it’s completely in their control. It’s flexibility so they can fit in work whenever it works for them.” Almost half of Uber drivers in Australia clock less than 10 hours per week, often supplementing other incomes. Senators were told if drivers were not earning enough income on Uber, they were free to find work elsewhere, including

other ride-sharing platforms. Uber officials were lukewarm on requests to calculate the average earnings per week of its drivers, saying there were “80,000 different stories” across the country. When pressed on their reluctance to offer an average wage, Uber officials said their drivers could be logged onto other ride-sharing apps at the same time.

Workplace spying ‘offensive’ to staff

A

dvances in workplace technology are allowing employers to know how long workers are spending in the toilet in a level of surveillance that an economist has labelled “offensive”. It’s no coincidence that technology benefits employers over employees, according to James Stanford, who told a parliamentary inquiry that innovation is solving the problems faced by those paying for it. The Centre for Future Work has recommended limits be placed on how companies use electronic systems to monitor, survey and discipline workers, including CCTV, GPS tracking and computer monitoring. “I think the use in an unregulated format of some of this electronic surveillance is ... offensive to the dignity and privacy of workers,” Dr Stanford, the centre’s director, told a Senate inquiry into future employment on Wednesday. While Dr Stanford has some concerns about technological advancement he doesn’t think mass unemployment as a result is likely, but admits technology is partly to blame for under-use of workers. While official figures put unemployment at 5.5 per cent, he says the true rate of underutilisation is around 15 per cent. “Our research suggests that less than half of the Australian

labour force today fills what we once considered a standard job, a permanent full-time job with entitlements that they can count on to support themselves and their families,” he said. Significant groups of workers will be “displaced and harmed” by the way technology is implemented, he predicted. But artificial intelligence expert Toby Walsh told the Sydney hearing there would always be a preference for the human touch in some professions, including doctors, psychologists and sales people. “And there will be lots of peoplefocused jobs where it’s emotional intelligence that’s very important,” Prof Walsh said. The inquiry also heard the hospitality sector is struggling to find skilled workers, blaming negative perceptions around workplace-based training compared to university education. A survey of final year school students last year found only a third saw vocational education and training (VET) and university as equal, Restaurant and Catering Australia policy manager James Coward told the committee. “So when they’re not actually viewing these things on a level footing it creates this idea hospitality sector work is only a temporary or a transitional kind of work, which is a very damaging perception for hospitality to have to contend with,” he said.

A

bodyhacking scientist is preparing to launch legal action against the NSW government after they cancelled an Opal card (Sydney’s Myki equivalent) he had surgically implanted in his hand. Meow-Ludo Disco Gamma Meow-Meow, which is his legal name, cut down the Opal chip, had it encased in biocompatible plastic and then implanted it just under the skin on his left hand by a piercing expert in April 2017. But Transport for NSW

cancelled the card earlier this week, he said. TfNSW, in a statement to AAP, said it would not comment on the case but advised cards may be cancelled if their terms of use were broken. Mr Meow-Meow - who ran as a candidate for the Science Party in the New England by-election last December - is expected before a Sydney court on March 16 to contest a $200 fine he received last year for riding the train without a valid ticket.

SCIENTISTS MAKING HARBOUR WATER DRINKABLE

S

ydney’s often-polluted harbour has played a starring role in the development of a new CSIRO water-filter coating that could save lives around the world. The new graphene filter coating is so effective, says CSIRO scientists, water samples from the harbour were safe to drink after passing through it. CSIRO scientist Dr Dong Han Seo says the tiny membrane, named Graphair, supercharges water purification, making it

simpler, more effective and quicker. “In Graphair we’ve found a perfect filter for water purification,” Dr Seo said in a statement. The graphene membrane, which is made of a single layer of carbon, could eventually replace current multi-stage processes with a single step. The research scientist and his CSIRO colleagues used water from Sydney Harbour as the test for Graphair’s water purification abilities.

The Trainwreck screenwriter and star, 36, wrote the simple comment “Yup,” alongside eight photos of the wedding, including one of the couple holding hands and smiling at each other. Other photos showed two small black dogs participating in the ceremony and actress Jennifer Lawrence kissing Schumer on the forehead. The two were married in a private ceremony in Malibu on Tuesday, according to People magazine, after dating under the radar for several months. In a separate Instagram post,

Schumer said she did not want any gifts, but urged followers instead to donate to Everytown for Gun Safety, a group that advocates for stricter gun laws. Schumer has called for increased gun control since a gunman in 2015 killed two women at a Lafayette, Louisiana movie house during a screening of Trainwreck. She also said she was not pregnant. Schumer’s new husband, Fischer, is the author of The Beetlebung Farm Cookbook, which was inspired by ingredients grown on his family farm on Martha’s Vineyard. Schumer will appear in the upcoming film I Feel Pretty, about an insecure woman who wakes from a fall believing she is beautiful and capable.

But everything that’s come since Vance Joy, real name James Keogh, released that song has proven he’s not a onehit wonder. His debut album Dream Your Life Away became a number one record and he was chosen by Taylor Swift to support her on the US, UK and Australian

dates of her 1989 tour in 2014. As he prepares to release his second album, Nation of Two, he reveals that he’s intent on playing the long game. “I noticed that if I looked at artists I really admire, they have a bunch of albums and their albums are quality. I guess that was always in my mind,” Keogh told AAP. But it’s hard to get to that second album when the first one has taken over your life so much. on tour by recording snippets on his phone or “collecting ideas” as he describes it. “Some of them ended up as songs, a lot of them maybe get mashed into other songs, it was a lot of attempts and a lot of songs that didn’t quite work out,” he said. Keogh invited a few collaborators to write with him for the first time, working with songwriters Dan Wilson (Adele, Taylor Swift) and Dave Bassett (Rachel Platten) on some of the album’s tracks. “I did feel a bit apprehensive about co-writing,” Keogh said. “It was because I’d written songs on my own, and it’s such a rewarding thing to write songs on your own. I feel like my most rewarding experiences have been when I feel like I’ve cracked a code myself.” But with the added pressure that comes with creating a second album, Keogh felt

encouraged through his collaborations. “You still don’t know when you might have a good idea. Sometimes you need reassurance or a positive word, or someone to notice something special that you’re doing, and you think ‘OK maybe that is a good idea and it’s worth pursuing’,” he said. After the album’s release, Keogh will be back on the road, hitting Europe, the US and back home to tour Australia in September with 13 new songs he hopes will stand the test of time. “You do want to write songs that you want to play over and over again, and if they’re made well they can stand up for a long time of playing, and playing, and playing.” * Nation of Two is out on Friday. * Vance Joy will perform at Sydney City Limits on Saturday and will return for a national tour on September 14.

Drake, the world’s best-selling artist of 2016, followed it up with a challenge on Instagram urging his fans to “go out and be nice to each other”. The ‘God’s Plan’ video up-ended the usual lavish efforts from music production companies, and instead

showed Drake handing out wads of cash to struggling families, toys to children, scholarships to students and cheques to a women’s shelter and a youth club in Miami. “The budget for this video was $US996,631.90. We gave it all away. Don’t tell the label,” says the message at the start of the video.

Breakthrough in peanut allergy treatment Dutch courage boosts language skills

T

he first treatment to help prevent serious allergic reactions to peanuts may be on the way. A company said on Tuesday that its daily capsules of peanut flour helped children tolerate nuts in a major study. Millions of children have peanut allergies, and some may have life-threatening reactions if accidentally exposed to them. Doctors have been testing daily doses of peanut flour, contained in a capsule and sprinkled over food, as a way to prevent that. California-based Aimmune Therapeutics said 67 per cent of kids who had its treatment were able to tolerate the equivalent of roughly two peanuts at the end of the study, compared to only 4 per cent of others given a dummy powder. The study involved nearly 500 kids ages 4 to 17 with severe peanut allergies. They were given either

capsules of peanut flour or a dummy powder in gradually increasing amounts for six months, then continued on that final level for another six months. Neither the participants nor their doctors knew who was getting what until the study ended. About 20 per cent of kids getting the peanut powder dropped out of the study, 12 per cent due to reactions or other problems. The results have not yet been reviewed by independent experts, but will be presented at a medical meeting next month. The company plans to file for US Food and Drug Administration approval for the treatment by the end of this year, and for approval in Europe early next year.

Health and Society, who was involved in the study, said: “Our study shows that acute alcohol consumption may have beneficial effects on the pronunciation of a foreign language in people who recently learned that language. “This provides some support for the lay belief (among bilingual speakers) that a low dose of alcohol can improve their ability to speak a second language.” Dr Fritz Renner, who was one of the researchers who conducted the study at Maastricht University, said: “It is important to point out that participants in this study consumed a low dose of alcohol. “Higher levels of alcohol consumption might not have beneficial effects on the pronunciation of a foreign language.”

The study looked at whether Dutch courage would boost people’s ability to speak a second language or whether it would turn their words into Double Dutch. It looked at 50 native German speakers who were studying at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands and had recently picked up the local language. The group were given either an alcoholic or nonalcoholic drink and then held a conversation in their nonnative language. Researchers found those who were slightly intoxicated had better pronunciation than their sober colleagues. Dr Inge Kersbergen, from the University of Liverpool’s Institute of Psychology,

ocals know it as The Sandy – but there’s more to the Sandringham Hotel than meets the eye. From 1889 to the early 20th century it was a coffee palace—a gracious three-storey temperance place. In the 1920s, it reinvented itself as the Sandringham Hotel! Talk about a turn around. Since then it’s been demolished (1967) and resurrected (as the Commodore Hotel, 1968). Today, The Sandy has the same esplanade location and offers food, drinks, entertainment and accommodation for the whole family. Can you imagine a more chill weekend breakfast than looking over Port Phillip Bay? The Bistro serves breakfast from 9-11:30 Sat and Sun,

menu items start at $5. But if you’ve slept in – lunch kicks in from 11:30. Food is served til 9pm. Every day. So what’s on the menu? There’s plenty of seafood. And for the non-pescatarian, check out the steak options. Don’t forget the specials— what about Salmon or Barra topped with prawns for under $25? The menu caters to all ages and tastes. February is Seniors month which means half-price lunch Monday to Friday. There’s an indoor playground to keep kids occupied. Check the website for food and drink specials and book a table— it’s instantaneous. In the sports bar, nothing on the menu is over $18. TAB, Trackside and Sportbet are all available. Wednesday night is trivia

night and Friday has happy hour (8-10pm), raffles and live entertainment. And if you can’t shut off your technology—there’s free wi-fi throughout. Perhaps you have a function coming up? The Dolphin Room caters for corporate events and the Deck suits more personal celebrations. Fill in the online form and someone will contact you to help you plan your event. Maybe you need a

staycation? The Sandy has 10 rooms, so it’s ideal for the break you have when you don’t have time for a break. Take a train from Flinders Street and walk 200 hundred metres from the Sandringham Station. Your room has ensuite, free wi-fi, bar fridge and don’t forget the great views. numerous studies have shown that intake of dietary cholesterol has little influence on blood cholesterol levels. In fact, the Harvard School of Public Health states that the biggest influence on blood cholesterol level is the mix of fats and carbohydrates in your diet - not the amount of cholesterol you take in from food. Today, eggs are part of a healthy diet - so much so that recently the country’s leading weight loss service announced that eggs are now included on its zero points list. Keep in mind, though, that not all eggs are created equal. When shopping for eggs, look for Eggland’s Best eggs, which have significantly more nutrition than ordinary eggs. “Many health and nutrition organizations are finally recognizing eggs for the nutrient powerhouse they are,” says Blatner. “Eggland’s Eggs Best eggs have six times more vitamin D, more than double Shunned for many years, eggs were believed to be bad the omega-3s and more than double the vitamin B12 of for heart health due to high ordinary eggs, making them cholesterol levels. However,

hroughout history, misconceptions, misinformation and popular culture have influenced Americans’ eating habits. Many foods that were previously eaten daily are now considered unhealthy. Conversely, some foods that were thought to be “bad for you,” are now considered nutritious. “Nutrition is exciting. Just about every day there is new research about how certain foods work in our body,” says Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner. “Over time as research is done, foods that were once considered unhealthy can be found to actually play a key role in healthy diets.” What historically “unhealthy” foods are now considered wholesome? Blatner provides some examples:

food | drink the best egg option to maximize your nutritional intake.”

Nuts Snacking on nuts today is typically considered a healthy way to keep hunger pangs at bay, but it wasn’t always that way. Nuts used to have a bad reputation for being high in fat and calories, and were often avoided, especially for people who wanted to lose weight. Today, many nuts are considered the ideal nutritious snack as they contain heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. For example, the versatile almond is relatively low in calories when compared to other nuts and has more calcium than other varieties, according to Health.com. Plus, almonds are rich in fiber and vitamin E, an important antioxidant. “Nuts can make a great snack or wonderful addition to recipes,” says Blatner. “The one thing to be mindful of is sodium intake.

Opt for raw nuts or dryroasted varieties. These are minimally processed and typically won’t contain the salt and oils you’ll find in other varieties.”

Carbohydrates Due to empty calories and low nutritional value, cutting carbs has been at the heart of diet fads for decades. The problem with this is that it assumes all carbs are equal, which is false. “The important thing to realize is there are highquality and low-quality carbs,” says Blatner. “Instead of shaming all carbs, focus on high-quality sources of carbohydrates that fuel the body and give you energy - skip the refined grains like white bread and focus on whole grains.”

Want to try a recipe that uses some of these formerly misunderstood foods? Blatner shares one of her favorites...

Eggland’s Best Spinach & Avocado Egg Sushi Makes two servings. Ingredients: 2 Eggland’s Best Eggs (Large), 1 tablespoon milk, 1 dash of salt, 1 dash of ground black pepper, 1 large whole wheat tortilla (12 inch), 1/2 avocado (mashed), 1 cup fresh baby spinach For the spicy sauce: Mix 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt, 1 tablespoon Sriracha (or other hot sauce) and 1 teaspoon milk in a small bowl. Directions: Coat a 10-inch nonstick pan with cooking spray and heat on medium-low heat. In a bowl, whisk together eggs and milk and season with salt and pepper. Pour egg mixture into pan and

cover with a lid. Do not scramble! Cook until set (about 3-4 minutes), flip and finish cooking (about 1-2 minutes). Lay tortilla flat and spread with avocado, leaving a 2-inch border around the edges. When eggs are finished cooking, place in the center of the tortilla and top with spinach. Start at one end and roll tightly, but gently. Coat the same skillet with nonstick spray and warm on medium-high heat. Place roll seam-side down on skillet and brown slightly on both sides. Remove and allow to rest for 1-2 minutes. Using a serrated knife, slice 1-inch pieces, drizzle with spicy sauce and serve with chopsticks.

5 Seconds of Summer announce Melbourne Show

A

ustralia’s very own 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER (5SOS) have announced they’ll be headed home to Sydney and Melbourne to perform two intimate Australian shows on their upcoming world tour 5SOS3, coinciding with the release of their brand new single ‘Want You Back’. ‘Want You Back’ is the band’s first new single in nearly two years. After 18 months on the road in support of their No.1 sophomore album “Sounds Good Feels Good”, the band has spent the last year living, writing and recording their new album in Los Angeles, set for release later this year. 5SOS told fans, “Finally… It’s been 3 years since our last

album and we are so ready to share new music with the world. After spending the last 5 years on the road since the age of 16, it was important we took time to reflect as individuals and now we’re coming back stronger and more unified than ever. These songs mean the world to us and we have held nothing back in writing and recording this album. We’ve been rehearsing a lot of the new songs live and can’t wait

to get back out on tour to connect with our incredible fans.” Hailed as the “biggest new rock act in the world” by Rolling Stone, 5SOS is the only band in history to see its first two full-length studio albums enter the Billboard 200 at No.1. Their self-titled debut album has sold more than three million units worldwide and their sophomore release “Sounds Good Feels Good” won the group two ARIA

awards for “Best Australian Live Act” and “Song of the Year” in 2015. Australian fans will be among the first to get up close and personal with the band – this one’s not to be missed with tickets expected to sell fast! 5 Seconds Of Summer perform Tuesday May 29 at 170 Russell in Melbourne. Tickets go on sale at 1PM, Friday March 2. For complete tour and ticketing details, visit: livenation.com.au.

Meet Spike

I’m quite a dapper gentleman. I enjoy more mature activities, a good game of backgammon and watching reruns of Mash. I’m an active member of The Men’s Shed and like to make relish from my home grown tomatoes. But don’t worry I also engage in doggo pastimes too, give me a hardy squeaky toy and I’m in heaven. I love my hobbies, but I’m also ready to learn some new tricks to keep my behaviour gentlemanly and polite. I would love a home all of my own, preferably without little ones or other dogs. Their loud talking interrupts the hilarity of my tv shows! RSPCA NO. 854273

I’m a sweet little rabbit who definitely lives up to her name. I’m looking for a loving owner who will help me come out of my shell and give me endless pats. Petbarn Chadstone 03 9567 8500 Chadstone Shopping Centre Chadstone

I’m a shy little puss who needs a helping hand to come out of my shell. I’m not really one for hiking or camping, I prefer to stay inside relaxing and knitting instead.

EXPERTS DEMYSTIFY DOG-LIKE TASMANIAN TIGER

T

he puzzling dingo-like development of Australia’s most fabled extinct animal, the Tasmanian tiger, has been demystified by a group of Victorian scientists. The researchers, from Museums Victoria and the University of Melbourne, published a joint study on Wednesday which sheds new light on the long-gone animal’s juvenile transformation from pouch-dwelling marsupial to canine-like creature. Using CT scans of 11 rare joey specimens, sourced from as far away as Prague, the Melbourne-based team created developmental 3D models of the thylacine, more commonly known as the Tasmanian tiger. “This kind of technology is letting us see into the past,” the study’s senior co-author Dr Christy Hipsley told reporters. “And look at not only the adult morphology of the animal but actually how it attained that over time, which is pretty extraordinary.” The beyond-the-grave reconstruction indicated the

tiger’s jellybean-sized joeys started developing their renowned dog- and wolf-like features about five weeks after birth, despite the species’ marsupial heritage. “That pouch period for marsupials is really critical ... they’re undergoing huge amounts of change,” Ms Hipsley said. “For us to have that entire period from basically the first week up to the 12th week, when they’re emerging from the pouch, was just really lucky.” Despite the tiger’s evolution as a dog doppelganger, the same Melbourne team - in a joint 2017 study sequenced its genome for the first time and found the species had not shared canine ancestry since the Triassic

period, 160 million years ago. “The fact that they’ve overcome that amount of time to look almost indistinguishable is one of the best examples we have of convergent evolution,” she said. In a twist to the stripy tale, two of the thylacine samples provided by the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery turned out to be incorrectly labelled - showing the technology’s usefulness to verify delicate, old specimens. The native tiger, which was isolated to Tasmania after disappearing off

the Australian mainland about 3000 years ago, was known for its sandy yellow-brown fur and distinct set of black stripes across its midriff, hind legs and tail. It was hunted out of existence, with the last known tiger dying in captivity at Hobart Zoo in 1936, but repeated ‘sightings’ have continued to cement the species’ place in Australian folklore.

Dr Andrew Pask and Dr Christy Hipsley pose with Museums Victoria’s Tasmanian tiger pup specimens.

TIGER WOODS GIVES FANS CAUSE FOR HOPE

T

iger Woods didn’t give his huge crowds at the Honda Classic all they wanted but he did give them fresh hope. For four rounds at the US PGA Tour event at Florida’s PGA National course, the 14-time major winner demonstrated why it’s foolish to write off a champion. By the time he entered the weekend rounds just four shots off the pace his galleries were vast and he was once again the centre of attention for television coverage. The big galleries were hoping to see 42-year-old Woods clinch an 80th US tour title, but he was tripped up by the infamous Bear Trap - the stretch from holes 15 to 17 - and closed with a 70 to finish 12th, eight shots outside the sudden-death playoff won by Justin Thomas. However, Woods had done enough to ensure the Masters at Augusta National in April will be one of the most anticipated major championships in years when he pursues a fifth green jacket and first since 2005. In just his third full-field tournament since 10 months out recuperating from spinal fusion surgery, Sunday’s result was his best in an official PGA Tour event since the Wyndham Championship in August 2015. “I made a big leap this week,” said Woods. “My expectations have gone up. I feel

MCGREGOR SET TO RETURN TO UFC COMPETITION << cont. from back page...

“I put my name forward to step in at UFC 222 to face Frankie Edgar when Max Holloway pulled out, but I was told there wasn’t enough time to generate the money that the UFC would need. “I was excited about bouncing in last minute and taking out the final featherweight, without all the rest of the stuff that comes

with this game. Please respect the insane amount of work outside the fight game that I have put in. “On top of the fighting. I am here. It is on them to come and get me. Because I am here. Yours sincerely, The Champ Champ.”

very happy the way I played the entire week.” Woods made his official comeback at Torrey Pines in January, where he finished 23rd, before missing the cut in Los Angeles. However, Woods’ third event of the year was by far his sharpest. On a course rated the most difficult on the US Tour this season, he led the field for average driving distance and proximity to the hole on approach shots. “I really hit the ball well; controlled my ball flight and I missed the golf ball in the correct spots. That’s something I’m very proud of,” Woods said. “Each (event) I feel I’m getting better and developing more of a feel for playing tournament golf.” Woods is expected to play only the Arnold Palmer Invitational before the Masters, in a bid to preserve his recovering back. “I need to keep playing tournament golf, keep building towards April,” Woods said. “I’m going to go get back in the gym again and start building, getting strong. “The goal when I first came back to get everything situated for April, and I feel like I’m right on track for that.”

SLOANE WON’T BE OFFERED CROWS CAPTAINCY

A

delaide Crows coach Don Pyke says he’s offended at suggestions the captaincy will be offered to Rory Sloane in a bid to keep the star midfielder at the AFL club. Sloane, who comes off-contract at the end of the 2018 season, is understood to be a target of rival clubs in his native Victoria. Sloane is currently Adelaide’s vice-captain and Pyke doesn’t expect the premier onballer to take over the captaincy from Taylor Walker this season. Adelaide’s players will vote on the club’s leadership group in coming weeks. “The suggestion that we would entertain conversations around the captaincy of our footy club on a re-contracting, I find almost offensive, to be honest,” Pyke said on Tuesday. “You’re suggesting that we’re going to throw it as a carrot to re-sign a player. “We have a process in place to run with our leadership group and our conversation around the vote, which will happen in the next couple of weeks. “And the integrity of that process is not going to be

compromised.” Sloane, a 165-gamer with the Crows, has indicated he was in no rush to decide his playing future beyond this season. “If you ask me what is going to happen with Rory - required player? Tick,” Pyke said. “Valued player? Tick. Fantastic at our footy club? Tick. Want him to stay? Tick. That is what we’re working towards. “But I’m not sure what more I can put on the table, the rest is really just speculation.” Pyke said the timing of contract negotiations must be respected. “Some guys with their managers will take time to work through the process of sorting out what they want to do - some guys will do it quickly, some guys will do it slow,” he said. “We can speculate all we want but as a club we’re not in a position to provide any unique insight for that discussion ... there’s no comment because there’s nothing really to comment on. “I understand the interest but I’m not sure what you want us to add to the discussion.”

TEDESCO EYES SLATER-LIKE COMBO WITH CRONK J

ames Tedesco has set his sights on emulating Billy Slater’s combination with Cooper Cronk as the pair prepare for their NRL campaign together at the Sydney Roosters. Tedesco has worked closely with Cronk throughout the Roosters’ pre-season and scored two tries in their trial win over Manly on Saturday. Slater and Cronk won four grand finals together during their 12-year partnership at

Melbourne, and also claimed four State of Origin series and two World Cups. And now Tedesco is excited about the prospect of trying to create something similar in the two years he is likely to spend with Cronk at Bondi. “The combinations he’s had with Billy over the years has been one of the best, and being able to create our own combinations is exciting,” Tedesco said.

NBA

BOSS DENIED CONSPIRACY AGAINST AUSTRALIA N

BA commissioner Adam Silver would like Australia to know there is no conspiracy targetting the nation. Sure, Ben Simmons was repeatedly snubbed for a spot in Sunday’s AllStar game in Los Angeles despite multiple players pulling out with injury and Joe Ingles, despite proving to be one of the NBA’s best long-range shooters the past two seasons, is not in the three-point contest. There’s that other sore point Australia is the only continent yet to host an NBA game. “I would say there’s absolutely no conspiracy,” Silver laughed in an interview with AAP. Silver said he was part of “process” in selecting players for the All-Star game, but it was a list of players drawn up by NBA coaches that denied

eymar was taken from the field on a stretcher after twisting his right ankle late in Paris SaintGermain’s 3-0 French Ligue 1 home defeat of Marseille The Brazil striker was taken off with 10 minutes remaining, after going in for a challenge on Marseille defender Bouna Sarr near the halfway line. The match between the traditional rivals became increasingly heated, in particular in the second half, with cheap challenges from both teams and 11 yellow cards - six of them for PSG. Neymar had his head in his hands and appeared tearful as he was taken off. His standing leg jarred as he lost balance and the weight of his body went onto his ankle, which briefly buckled under him. The win moved PSG 14 points clear of second-place Monaco, with only 11 games left, but thoughts were with Neymar. “We were solid and we tried to control the game,” PSG captain Thiago Silva said. “It’s a shame that we lost an important player at the end.” Asked if he thinks Neymar’s injury is serious, Silva speculated that it was. “Yes, because it was swollen straight away. I’m not a doctor

but I don’t think he’ll be ready for Wednesday (in the French Cup against Marseille),” he said. PSG took the lead on 10 minutes when Kylian Mbappe took advantage of some slack defending by Jordan Amavi to skip past another defender and drill a low shot into the bottom right corner. Marseille’s centre back Jorge Rolando gifted PSG an own goal on 28 minutes when he directed a Neymar cross past his own keeper. Edinson Cavani scored the sealer on 56 minutes for his league-leading 24th goal of the season. Lyon’s poor defending cost them again as defender Mathieu Debuchy scored a last-minute equaliser for local rivals SaintEtienne in a 1-1 draw. Debuchy was left unmarked inside the penalty area to steer in a shot off the post from Remy Cabella’s left-wing cross. A brilliantly executed goal from striker Mariano Diaz, his 15th of the season, gave Lyon a 19thminute lead. Fourth-placed Lyon are five points behind third-place Marseille. Ninth-placed Nice were reprieved by the woodwork four times in a 0-0 draw at eightplaced Bordeaux.

rookie Simmons his spot. Veteran Washington Wizards guards John Wall and Bradley Beal, the Indiana Pacers’ Victor Oladipo and the Toronto Raptors’ Kyle Lowry topped the list created by the coaches. When injury ruled Wall out Detroit Pistons centre Andre Drummond was next on the list and when Cleveland Cavaliers forward Kevin Love was injured the coaches had Miami Heat 10-year veteran guard Goran Dragic above Simmons. Simmons was on the “bubble”. “It’s a little bit arbitrary honestly at the end of the day,” Silver said. “Often veterans have a little bit of an advantage because the coaches know them better over the years, but I have no doubt if Ben continues to play the way that he has he’s not only going to be an All-Star in the near future but

for many years to come.” Silver has been impressed with the outrage from Australian fans, particularly MP Tim Watts’s fiery speech in parliament where he declared “no one with two brain cells to rub together would want Goran Dragic on their team over Ben”. “That’s one thing about our world it seems to continually be shrinking,” Silver said. “When a parliamentarian gets up in Australia and rants about Ben not making the AllStar team I hear it in real time in my office in New York.” Silver has not ruled out Australia hosting an NBA

4 194 SUPERSTAR KERR BACKS 5 205 INJURY-HIT MATILDAS

S

triking powerhouse Sam Kerr says Australia’s national women’s soccer team is well-placed to cover key absences as they begin their run to the Asian Cup. The high-flying Matildas return to international action this week at the Algarve Cup, a 12-nation friendly tournament in Portugal. With only one more match - a homecoming for Kerr in Perth against Thailand on March 26 - before April’s continental championships, the tournament is a crucial tune-up. But there’s no Caitlin Foord, no Kyah Simon and no Emily Gielnik in Portgual - all of whom have been mainstays in the side over the last two years. Injury clouds over Hayley Raso and Steph Catley have the potential to drop the experience level in Alen Stajcic’s side further still. Kerr said their unavailability wouldn’t be an excuse. “One hundred per cent we’ve still got some serious firepower,” she told AAP. “Last year we didn’t play the same team all the time. Whether it was me sitting on the bench, Lisa (De Vanna) sitting on the bench, others. “We’re battling a few injuries. “The beauty of football is it gives opportunities for some other girls and hopefully there’s a few more that step up. “Myself included. I want to score some more goals this tournament because last time I struggled.”

PRE-SEASON QUESTIONS

FOR AFL OLDER HANDS << cont. from front page... • ADELAIDE: Bryce Gibbs. His 231 games at Carlton included just five finals. Now, the silkysmooth onballer steps out for a premiership contender. Will Gibbs find immediate synergy with his great mate and Crows ruck Sam Jacobs?

• BRISBANE: With Luke Hodge likely to be in pre-season cottonwool, ex-Crow Charlie Cameron will be expected to make an instant impact. Can the 23-yearold, who went to Brisbane to be closer to family, morph from an attacking cameo to a leading midfield role?

• CARLTON: Matthew Lobbe was tossed on the scrapheap at Port Adelaide when Paddy Ryder arrived - he didn’t play an AFL game last year. An old- fashioned ruck workhorse, can he find form and lighten the load on Blues top gun Matthew Kreuzer? • COLLINGWOOD: Mason Cox. The American has played 20 games in two seasons, and earnt a three-year contract extension with the Magpies. Is this the year he transforms his undoubted potential and athleticism into game-breaking performances? • FREMANTLE: Brandon Matera. The goal-savvy forward left Gold Coast after 101 games and 124 goals to return to his native Perth, where Matera is a footy household name. Can the goalsneak - the son of West Coast foundation player Wally and nephew of Eagles legends Peter and Phil - live up to the name?

• GOLD COAST: Lachie Weller. After three promising seasons at Fremantle, has returned to his former residence where he was a member of Gold Coast’s academy. Can he instantly repay the faith of the Suns, widely considered to pay way overs draft pick No.2 - in a trade to secure him?

• GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY: Lachlan Keeffe. Tossed a lifeline by the Giants after being delisted by Collingwood after a chequered stint - 40 games since his 2011 debut, including a two-year ban for taking a banned substance. Will he grab the chance and add big-man depth to a flag fancy or be a failed punt?

• HAWTHORN: Jarman Impey. Joins the Hawks in a trade from Port Adelaide, where he showed blitzing speed and sublime skills - sometimes. Can the 75-gamer hit his straps on a consistent basis and become the genuine match-turner he could be? • MELBOURNE: Jake Lever. Almost forgotten in his acrimonious exit from Adelaide is the fact he is an absolute gun. Turns 21 next month but reads the play like a veteran. But can he handle the scrutiny that comes with his massive pay packet?

• NORTH MELBOURNE: Billy Hartung. On the outer at Hawthorn before being delisted, he cost the Kangaroos just draft pick No.77. Can he complement his pace and ball-winning with improved skills to prove that selection is a genuine bargain buy?

• PORT ADELAIDE: Jack Watts. The former whipping boy at Melbourne has been gifted fresh air at Port. Boasts top-notch skills and 153 games’ experience but renowned for inconsistency. Can he leave his baggage from his stint at Melbourne behind? • ST KILDA: Logan Austin. Was released by Port Adelaide despite showing immense promise as a key defender - he fell behind the Power’s defensive pecking order. Has the physical make-up to stand up to the big gorillas but does he have the mental toughness to thrive in the AFL jungle?

• SYDNEY: Aliir Aliir. After a super 2016 debut season, the Kenyan-born muscle man appeared set to become a defensive mainstay. But he played only three AFL games last year. Will he able to rediscover his best form and hold down a key post for the Swans? • WEST COAST: Nic Naitanui. Was an All Australian six seasons ago when stamped as the next big thing in the AFL world. Injury robbed him of the entire 2017 season, and the competition lost one of its most-spectacular players. But will his knee reconstruction limit his renowned high-leaping exploits?

• WESTERN BULLDOGS: Josh Schache. After two seasons at Brisbane, the 199cm-tall key forward returns to Victoria after citing home sickness. A No.2 draft pick with raw talent, can he instantly gel in attacking partnership with No.1 pick Tom Boyd?

POWER RECRUITS FAIL TO LIVE UP TO AFL HYPE

P

ort Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley admits his high-profile recruits need more time to gel after they failed to fire in Sunday’s two-point pre-season loss to West Coast in Perth. Jack Watts (nine disposals, one goal), Lindsay Thomas (four disposals), Jack Trengove (11 disposals), and Steven Motlop (eight disposals) had quiet outings in the 8.8 (56) to 8.6 (54) loss. Former Brisbane captain

Tom Rockliff didn’t play because of knee soreness. Port’s season opener against Fremantle on March 24 is less than a month away, and Hinkley knows he is running out of time to get all the new recruits acclimatised to their new teammates and game plan. But Hinkley said he saw enough glimpses against the Eagles to suggest his recruits are on the right track.

MCGREGOR

SET TO RETURN TO UFC COMPETITION L

ightweight champion Conor McGregor has confirmed plans to fight again in the UFC. The Irishman has not stepped foot in the octagon for a mixed martial arts bout since November 2016, when he defeated Eddie Alvarez to claim the lightweight strap. McGregor tried his hand at boxing, securing a highly lucrative showdown with the unbeaten Floyd Mayweather in August in Las Vegas, in which he was stopped in the 10th round. But, despite a long period of inactivity, the 29-year-old has revealed on social media that he is working hard to secure a return fight. McGregor even tried a late attempt

to fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222 next weekend after Max Holloway withdrew due to injury, only to be denied. He wrote on Instagram: “I am fighting again. Period. I am the best at this.
