Amazon sales surge on Whole Foods buy
A
mazon has reported a surge in summer sales in the US with profits trouncing expectations as shoppers jumped at “Prime Day” promotions on its website and bought groceries at its newly acquired chain of Whole Foods Market stores. Shares rose more than 7 per cent in after-hours trade. Amazon is winning business from older, big box rivals by delivering virtually any product to customers at a low cost, and at times faster than it takes to buy goods from a physical shop. It acquired Whole Foods for $US13.7 billion in August to help it deliver groceries to shoppers’ doorsteps. Amazon’s results defied expectations that it would invest virtually all of its earnings into new areas as it has in the past. The world’s largest online retailer said net income rose to $US256 million, or 52 US cents per share in the quarter ended September 30. Analysts on average were expecting 3 US cents per share, according to
An employee of grocery delivery service Amazon Fresh packs ordered products into a transport bag. Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Sales jumped 34 per cent to $US43.7 billion in the third quarter, including $US1.3 billion in sales from the upscale grocer. Analysts had expected $US42.1 billion. Prime Day, a summer marketing event Amazon has created to replicate the shopping frenzy that is more
typical of the winter holiday season, helped boost sales. This was “another strong performance, with top-line growth accelerating in the core retail segment,” Baird Equity Research analyst Colin Sebastian said. Still, the company is running on razor-thin profit margins compared with its

peers. Amazon is building warehouses around the world to be faster than competitors to deliver goods to customers. It also has stepped up its spending on video, from original television shows to live sports, to draw more people to its website to both watch and shop.

caramelised cauliflower and black garlic puree. Quite a mouthful -- and they were! Shamelessly, we shared - and were glad we did. The entrees were accompanied by a wonderfully refreshing glass of Hunter Valley Tulloch Verscato sparkling Verdelho. Both plates were tasty, juicy, yet with enough of a searing to provide some bite. The mains were even more of a taste sensation. The wild saltwater barramundi with native greens, bok choy, parsnip and white miso puree, with salt cured salmon roe, sea urchin beurre and basil oil was excellent. The skin was crispy, and the flesh tasty without being overpowered by the accompaniments. The Hunter Valley lamb rump, served with baby carrots, smoked baby beetroot, and a wonderful blend of garlic and thyme goats cheese, muntrie berries, saltbush, pistachio, pomegranate and truffle caper vinaigrette, was its equal. To finish off the night, we indulged in a delightfully over-the-top Bailey’s and White Chocolate Cheesecake, and the Circa Turkish Delight - which combined rose jelly, chocolate ganache and lemon meringue. Barrett says he loves making “everlasting happy memories for people from my food”. It was something he achieved spectacularly.

A ‘Tortoise’ method wins diet race
“tortoise and the hare” approach to weight loss is most likely to succeed in the race to slim, research has shown. As in the well known Aesop’s fable, consistent plodding appears to be more effective than a mad dash to the finish line. The study of 183 participants found “hares” most likely to crash diet their way to slimness lost less weight over two years than “tortoises” who shed a consistent number of kilograms each week. Researcher Dr Emily Feig, of Drexel University in the US, said: “It seems that developing stable, repeatable behaviours related to food intake and weight loss early on in a weight control program is really important for maintaining changes over the long term.” Obese and overweight individuals were enrolled into a year-long weight loss program based on meal replacements and behavioural strategies such as selfmonitoring, kilojoule counting and increased exercise.
Bigger weight fluctuations in the first six and 12 weeks led to poorer weight control 12 months and two years later, the results published in the journal Obesity showed. For example, a person who lost 1.8kg one week, regained 0.9kg the next week, and then lost 0.45kg a week later, fared worse than someone who shed 0.45kg a week consistently for three weeks. The scientists did not explore the reasons why some participants’ weight varied more than others. But previous research has shown that trying to slim too fast can set up a yo-yo cycle of crash dieting and fluctuating weight. Chief investigator psychologist Professor Michael Lowe, also from Drexel University, said sticking to weight loss goals was important, even if progress was slow. “Settle on a weight loss plan that you can maintain week in and week out, even if that means consistently losing three-quarters of a pound each week,” he said.

Maeve O’Meara finds food heroes at home
M
aeve O’Meara is back on her Food Safari and the key to her food exploration, she says, has been finding the right chefs. Throughout the making of this series she combines hatted-restaurant chefs such as Peter Gilmore (Quay Restaurant) and Martin Benn (Sepia Restaurant) with authentic home cooks who have migrated from Ethiopia, or Turkey, to unearth the most delicious recipes. Some of the home cooks have been found in the unlikeliest of places. “There’s a Zimbabwean woman who picked tender pumpkin leaves from her garden, a few flowers and a few tendrils, and then cooked it up in a classic dish with tomato, onion and peanut butter and it was one of the most delicious things I’d eaten on the show. She was actually found through my hairdresser,” she said. The host talks just as fondly about a gnocchi recipe rustled up by a home cook with an Italian background as she does about a red lentil kofta crafted at a top restaurant. “It’s always a combination of some great chefs but the home cooks being the absolute bedrock of what we do. I think people that have had vegetables as a major
fde
part of their cuisines growing up really do know how to use vegetables and particularly staples like pulses and legumes,” she said. The flow of the show is dictated somewhat by the seasonal availability of the produce, but there are some stand alone episodes that explore other aspects of food culture and ingredients “There’s something on flowers, there’s something on the tropics, there’s something on the cuisines of the world on vegetables in parcels, preserved and fermented, sweet and sour flavours, some of the staples, a real celebration of herbs and herbs used in many different ways through the cuisines of the world,” she said. At home, O’Meara tries to recreate nearly every dish from the show, but insists the show isn’t just for wannabe chefs. “I think in this show you meet people who just sparkle off the television, so even if you’re never going to cook anything you just have an appreciation of Australia as a beautiful multicultural foodloving nation with people who want to show you some of their tips and secrets and gardens,” she said. * Food Safari Earth airs on Thursdays at 8.00pm (AEDT) on SBS

Raccoons Rock Rosebud
L
ooking for a ‘rockin’ good night of fun? Then get on down to Sound Bar on Nov 18th and catch the infectious tunes of The Raccoons. The Raccoons, who base their sound on the tough, wiry music of the English Teddy Boy bands, are a Tasmanian rockabilly outfit established in 1987. Like all bands, they’ve had their fair share of reforms along the way. However, the new line up since 2012 have been kickin’ hard with a fiercesome live reputation of originals and authentic rockabilly tunes that gives their songs an interesting alternative to the American influenced style rockabilly. During the winter months of 2014, they recorded their Slowburn EP, which caught the attention of legendary UK label, Raucous Records. This opened the way for them to release their debut album, All Draped Up in 2017. Vintage Rock Magazine wrote, “The Raccoons are inspired by British Teddy Boy rock & roll and certainly look and sound the part.” All Draped Up is a compilation of powerful original songs and is getting many positive reviews as well as good airplay overseas. The Raccoons will be strumming up a storm when they visit our shores in November. You can catch them at the Gem Bar – 289 Wellington St, Collingwood on Friday 17th Nov at 9pm and Sound Bar - 1625 Point Nepean Road, Rosebud West on Saturday 18th Nov at 9pm.
