Clarkson says only tweaks needed for AFL

A

lastair Clarkson calls it “creep” - and he’s not referring to social media pests. The four-time Hawthorn premiership coach says efforts to keep the game flowing have contributed to the AFL’s problems with congestion. He’s also welcomed the widespread debate about the

state of the game, amid concerns about lower scoring in the opening six rounds this season. Clarkson is optimistic, saying the game is in good shape and only tweaks are needed to improve it. But he also notes that the AFL is losing one its main attractions - that it attracts players of all

shapes and sizes. “I think the glass is threequarter full and we have a fantastic product,” he said. “In my view, the tweaks aren’t even changes - in business terms, they call it ‘creep’. “There have been some things happening in terms of adjudication ... continued page 54 >>

IN THE LUCKY COUNTRY?

Aussie optimism dimmer in 10 years’ time “...COSTS HAVE FAR OUTPACED WAGE GROWTH OVER THE PAST DECADE”

M

any Australians are pessimistic about how liveable the country will be in 10 years’ time, with rising living and housing costs the leading concerns identified in a new survey. A poll by National Australia Bank of 2,000 Australian adults shows that while nine in 10 adults believe the country is a great place to live now, just 55 per cent think it will still be that way in 2028. The results of the poll, released recently, show the costs of living and housing to be among the main causes of concern for the future, led by overwhelmingly bleak reactions

AUSTRALIA NOW AND IN THE FUTURE - KEY FINDINGS: • 88 per cent say Australia a great place to live in 2018 while six per cent say it isn’t • 55 per cent say Australia be a better place to live in 2028 • Open spaces, people and lifestyle, and safety are rated as the top features that make Australia a great place to live • Entertainment, public transport, social inclusion and telecommunications are the only things expected to improve by 2028 • Living costs, housing and safety are the biggest features expected to deteriorate by 2028

from Tasmanians and those over the age of 50. Worries about future costs mirror concerns expressed over the past decade, with a recent Victorian Council of Social Services report finding housing and energy costs have far outpaced wage growth over the past decade. The NAB survey also found pessimists outnumber optimists on most subjects, including immigration, social welfare and jobs. Respondents were polled on 27 issues but only delivered a net positive result about the outlook for four: entertainment, public transport, social inclusion and telecommunications. And even then, far more were cynical about the future of phone and internet connections than they were at same time last year. Anxiety about power and water prices in 2028 also increased. NAB Group Chief Economist Alan Oster said the drop in the outlook for telecommunications and utilities perhaps reflected concerns about the rollout of the NBN and the current spike in energy prices. On the positive side, respondents listed open spaces, the people and lifestyle as the main factors making Australia a great place to live at present. Source: NAB Life In The Lucky Country report

Guilty verdict was mob justice: Cosby wife

B

ill Cosby’s wife is calling for a criminal investigation into the prosecutor behind his sexual assault conviction, saying the case was “mob justice, not real justice” and a “tragedy” that must be undone. Camille Cosby commented on the case for the first time on Thursday in statement issued through a spokesman a week after her husband of 54 years was convicted of aggravated indecent assault. Camille Cosby called her husband’s chief accuser Andrea Constand a liar. She compared the dozens of

other women who’ve accused her husband to “lynch mobs” and his treatment to that of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black boy lynched in 1955 over false allegations he flirted with a white woman. Prosecutors and Constand’s lawyers did not immediately respond to messages. The 80-year-old Cosby is on house arrest while awaiting sentencing that could put him in prison for the rest of his life. The Associated Press does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, as Constand has done.

Discover Cornish College Trump lookalike discovered in Spain

A

woman in Spain has found unexpected fame on social media after many found she bore a striking resemblance to US President Donald Trump. Thousands of responses flooded in recently after a journalist reporting on farming in northwestern Spain posted on Instagram a picture of Dolores Leis dressed in farm clothing with a hoe over her shoulder.

The 70-year-old has since been asked to comment on pressing US policy and international issues - though she has shown more concern for a moth plague threatening her potato crops. “I say that it must be because of the colour of the hair,” Leis told the La Voz de Galicia newspaper. She added she doesn’t use a mobile phone and has little interest in online chatter.

ustralia’s former top cop has slammed governments for waging a war on drugs insisting it’s failed “abysmally”. Former Australian Federal Police commissioner Mick Palmer has backed a Greens proposal to legalise cannabis use by adults, saying the current policy “makes no sense at all”. Under the proposed reforms cannabis would be redefined as a legal substance with licences issued for its production and sale. “There’s no question the current policy has failed abysmally,” Mr Palmer told reporters in Sydney recently. Australian Greens leader Richard Di Natale wants a national agency established

to issue production and sale licences and oversee regulations. Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt rejected the push, stating marijuana was a “gateway drug” which could lead users to take up other, harder, drugs such as heroin or ice. But Mr Palmer says that’s already happening now. He acknowledged that wouldn’t change under the Greens’ proposal but argues weed would be better regulated. “There will always be some people for who one drug is not enough and will transition to another but this is much more likely to be controlled,” he said. “I don’t see it in any sense being worse than it is now.” Under the Greens’ plan, the plain-packaged cannabis

would clearly identify the ingredients to ensure users knew what they were buying. “When you buy from the black market you have no idea what you’re getting and it leads to a higher likelihood that people are going to have cravings for stronger drugs,” the ex-AFP boss said speaking alongside Senator Di Natale. “I’d love to see a situation where nobody takes drugs but the reality is this is what’s occurring in a world of prohibition and it’s not likely to stop.” The Greens leader says legalising cannabis would raise hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, helping fund treatment, education and other harmreduction programs.

Victorian Budget 2018-19: An opportunity lost VICTORIA GETS INFRASTRUCTURE FEDERAL CASH

T

he Real Estate Institute of Victoria is disappointed that the Andrews Labor Government has not provided any property tax relief in its Budget handed down this week. “While the Premier says his government is getting things done, it has failed to get one of the most important things done,” REIV President Richard Simpson said. “We believe that a reduction in taxes on land, and on real estate transactions, would incentivise investment and it is hard to understand why the Government has missed this opportunity to address the Land Tax issue. “Property taxes will account for over $11 billion of the state’s $24 billion tax revenue in 2018-19. It is a heavy burden indeed and one that needs to be reduced.” “When the Government refuses to cut taxes at a time of Budget surplus, strong economic growth, Triple A credit ratings and a rapidly growing population, Victorians must be sceptical that it will ever do so.” Treasury predicts the haul from Land Tax will increase again next year, and again in each of the

three years following, which is bad news for property investment in this state. Despite a healthy take-up of the lower Land Transfer Duty incentive offered to first-time home buyers, the Government’s total take from this tax has increased this year and is projected to rise again in 201819, and every year over the forward estimates. Given that there is no provision in this Budget for increased public housing, that the rental market across Victoria is tight, and that home prices are continuing to rise, further cuts to Land Transfer Duty would have encouraged investors and provided increased opportunity for homebuyers without hurting the Budget bottom line. “In this election year, the REIV will continue to urge both sides of politics to commit to a reduction in the tax burden on property,” Mr Simpson said. The REIV supports the cuts to payroll tax in regional Victoria, while noting that many businesses are too small to take advantage.

“Payroll taxes, like property taxes, curb investment and are anti-employment. We welcome any cuts, but would have preferred a further increase in the payroll tax threshold so that all businesses can benefit. “REIV also welcomes the continued commitment to improving road and rail infrastructure. Access to efficient public transport, better roads and faster rail, as well as proximity to essential services make locations more desirable and increase demand,” Mr Simpson said.

V

ictoria will score a $7.8 billion infrastructure package in the federal budget, with the money to be poured into roads and rail. The North East Link will get $1.75 billion, another $225 million will be allocated to electrify the Frankston line to Baxter, while the Turnbull government wants to see $475 million go to a rail link between Monash University’s Caulfield and Clayton campuses. The federal government has already committed $5 billion to an airport rail link in Melbourne, but the state government says it is waiting on a business case to be finished in September.

Fight was self defence: ex bikie’s lawyer F

ormer Bandido bikie Toby Mitchell tried to avoid a confrontation with a drunk man who “cracked onto” two of his female friends before allegedly bashing him in self defence, his lawyer says. Mitchell, 43, faced affray and assault charges before a hearing of Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday relating to a fight at a Southbank restaurant in December. It’s alleged he and another man became involved in a dispute after the man made derogatory comments to two women who had accompanied Mitchell to the restaurant. “It looked like he was trying to crack onto them,” the manager said in a police statement read by Mitchell’s lawyer Theo Magazis. Mitchell’s friends said the man “was being a creep” and the trio complained to management. The 43-year-old also allegedly told the man: “These girls are

with me, so you can go away”. The manager then approached the man, spoke to him about his behaviour and asked him to stay away from Mitchell’s group. “He didn’t get the point,” the manager said in his statement. “At that stage I thought he would have a go at me, he was pretty

aggressive.” As staff were trying to usher the man outside, he tried to get around the manager towards Mitchell and a fight ensued. Mr Magazis said CCTV footage played to the court shows the man taking off his jacket and “shaping up” to Mitchell. “Two individuals have a verbal altercation and essentially one says,

‘Come on, take me on, let’s see who’s tough’ and loses the fight,” the lawyer told the court. Mitchell pushed and slapped the man before more blows were thrown and the man fell to the ground. The ex-bikie then allegedly kicked or stomped on his head. “I remember Toby said to me, ‘You should have gotten rid of them earlier’,” the manager told police. Mr Magazis told the court Mitchell suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder after he was shot five times at Brunswick in 2011 and was the victim of another shooting in 2013. “His perception of a threat is, in my submission, elevated than what might ordinarily be the case for someone else who hasn’t suffered the experiences he has or had the (PTSD) diagnoses he’s had,” Mr Magazis said. Mitchell is on bail and is due to return to court on July 4.

VICTORIA TO BECOME HUB FOR MEDICINAL

Ph: 1300 BIG NEWS

DRUG SMUGGLER

CANNABIS gets Dutton, Entsch support T A

he world’s leading medicinal cannabis company is set to establish a $16 million centre in Victoria. Canopy Growth Corporation will base its Asia-Pacific headquarters in the state, producing high quality medicinal cannabis, creating more than 200 jobs. “We were the first state to legalise medicinal cannabis and now we’re continuing to lead the way and cement our position as the medicinal cannabis hub of the southern hemisphere,” Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford said on Tuesday. With support from the state government, Canopy through its wholly-owned subsidiary Spectrum Cannabis Australia, will invest up to $16 million over four years in Victoria for the centre, which will produce medicinal cannabis for domestic and international markets. The Labor government wants to grow Victoria’s emerging medicinal cannabis industry into an established sector, with the state supplying supplying half of Australia’s medicinal cannabis by 2028. It also aims to create 500 jobs in Victoria. The government says the announcement will strengthen work under way between Canopy and Agriculture Victoria, in delivering world class results producing medicinal cannabis. Victoria was the first state in Australia to legalise access to medicinal cannabis for patients in exceptional circumstances, in 2016. “We’re proud to be part of this ground-breaking industry that will not only change and save lives, but create hundreds of local jobs,” Ms Pulford said. Canopy Growth CEO Bruce Linton said supporting the creation of a domestic industry will improve outcomes for patients, create jobs and support the economy. The business aims to quickly establish a local market presence, and is looking for suitable places to create a hitech greenhouse and processing facility, Spectrum Australia Managing Director Ben Quirin said.

merican marijuana smuggler and fugitive Peyton Eidson, frail after struggling with medical ailments exacerbated by stints in Australian and US jails, will stand before a judge in a San Francisco court later this week. US prosecutors want Judge Susan Ilston to sentence 74-yearold Eidson to eight years’ jail - a potential death sentence. Eidson’s Californian lawyer, Erick Guzman, will ask for a two-year sentence and has used letters from Australian Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Peter Dutton and federal Queensland Liberal MP Warren Entsch to back a call for leniency. Eidson’s story is so colourful it has the potential to be a Hollywood movie or TV miniseries and the sentencing memos filed by prosecutors and Guzman, usually dour, read like crime novels. “Eidson was an international drug smuggler in the ‘Miami Vice’ days of open-collared shirts and suitcases full of cash,” US federal prosecutors Frank Riebli and Randall Leonard wrote ahead of Friday’s sentencing. Guzman talked up how Eidson - despite being a major American marijuana smuggler who lived under a stolen identity in northern Queensland for almost 30 years - became a health spa owner and valued member of the community. “Amazing would not be overstating the life Mr Eidson led in Australia,” Guzman said. Eidson entered guilty pleas in January to conspiring to distribute marijuana and aggravated identity theft. Eidson became a major marijuana smuggler in the 1980s, using the Panamanian-flagged ocean-going freighter Christina M to ship large loads of the drug from Thailand to the US. On one trip, infiltrated by undercover agents, the Christina M was loaded with 18,000kg of marijuana and was brought near the southeast of Hawaii

where the drugs were placed on smaller boats for transport into unguarded harbours on the central California coast. But others say it raises troubling legal and privacy concerns for the millions of people who submit their DNA to such websites to discover their heritage. There aren’t strong privacy laws to keep police from trolling ancestry site databases, said Steve Mercer, the chief lawyer for the forensic division of the Maryland Office of the Public Defender. “People who submit DNA for ancestors testing are unwittingly becoming genetic informants on their innocent family,” Mercer said, adding that they “have fewer privacy protections than convicted offenders whose DNA is contained in regulated databanks.” Joseph James DeAngelo, 72,

was arrested on Tuesday after investigators matched crime scene DNA with genetic material stored by a distant relative on an online site. From there, they narrowed it down to the Sacramento-area grandfather using DNA obtained from material he’d discarded, Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert said. Authorities declined to name the online site but two of the largest, Ancestry.com and 23andMe, said they weren’t involved in the case. DNA potentially may have played an earlier role in the case. It was just coming into use as a criminal investigative tool in 1986 when the predator variously known as the East Area Rapist and the Golden State Killer apparently ended his decade-long wave of attacks. DeAngelo, a former police officer, probably would have known about the new method, experts said.

“He knew police techniques,” said John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor Louis Schlesinger. “He was smart.” No one who knew DeAngelo over the decades connected him with the string of at least a dozen murders, 50 rapes and dozens of burglaries from 1976 to 1986

throughout the state. After he was identified as the suspect, however, prosecutors rushed to charge him with eight killings. In addition, police in the central California farming town of Visalia said Thursday that DeAngelo is a suspect in a 13th killing and about 100 burglaries in the area.

FACEBOOK SOFTWARE COULD HELP FIND MISSING PEOPLE

T

he days of searching for missing persons with posters, billboards and milk cartons might be numbered, with millions of Facebook photos shaping as a potential key to reuniting families with lost loved ones. The Invisible Friends campaign, a world-first initiative launched recently, urges global users to ‘friend’ the profiles of 10 missing people on the chance a facial scan finds them lurking in the background of their online photos and videos. Befriending these profiles

will allow the social network’s facial recognition software, which claims to operate at a 98 per cent accuracy rate, to trawl through posted images for an auto-tag match. The Victorianbased Missing Persons Advocacy Network, will then be notified of a possible match. “Invisible Friends is an ingenious way to put artificial intelligence to work for a good cause, and carry out a task humans simply aren’t capable of,” network founder and director Loren O’Keeffe said in a statement.

Facebook takes on Tinder with new dating app

F

acebook has announced plans to add a dating service to its social media platform. Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg says the site would soon add a dating tool aimed at creating “real, long-term relationships”. The opt-in feature will enable users to create a separate dating profile to their existing Facebook account, with the site then offering recommendations based on preferences, things in common with other users of the tool, and any mutual friends. Speaking at the firm’s F8 conference, Zuckerberg said the tool would only suggest matches that users were not already friends with, and none of a user’s existing friends on the platform would be able to see any of their dating activity. The Facebook boss said more than 200 million people currently listed themselves as “single” on Facebook, adding the figure showed there was an opportunity to create new connections as a result. He added that he wanted the service to be used for

real relationships and “not just hook-ups”. Facebook’s new take on online dating is rolling out “soon”, Zuckerberg said, and will be seen as a direct challenge to the wide range of dating apps and online services already available. Apps such as Tinder and Bumble have become increasingly popular in recent years. Since launching in 2012, Tinder has grown to become one of the most popular apps on smartphones, in use in more than 190 countries, creating more than 26 million matches every day.

Russians urge government to unblock Telegram

APP T

housands of people have marched through Moscow, throwing paper planes and calling for authorities to unblock the popular Telegram instant messaging app. Protesters chanted slogans against President Vladimir Putin as they launched the planes - a reference to the app’s logo. “Putin’s regime has declared war on the internet, has declared war on free society... so we have to be here in support of Telegram,” one protester told Reuters.

entrepreneur Pavel Durov, called for “digital resistance” in response to the decision and promised to fund anyone developing proxies and VPNs to dodge the block. More than 12,000 people joined the march, said White Counter, a volunteer group that counts people at protests. “Thousands of young and progressive people are currently protesting in Moscow in defence

Russia began blocking Telegram on April 16 after the app refused to comply with a court order to grant state security services access to its users’ encrypted messages. Russia’s FSB Federal Security service has said it needs access to some of those messages for its work, that includes guarding against militant attacks. In the process of blocking the app, state watchdog Roskomnadzor also cut off access to a slew of other websites. Telegram’s founder, Russian

Telegram has more than 200 million global users and is ranked as the world’s ninth most popular mobile messaging service. Iran’s judiciary has also banned the app to protect national security, Iranian state TV reported recently.

JAPAN UNVEILS ‘TRANSFORMER’ ROBOT

A

Transformers-style, humanoid robot that can shape shift into a sports car in about 60 seconds has been unveiled in Japan. The J-deite RIDE robot is the brainchild of Kenji Ishida, CEO of Brave Robotics and a fan of anime movies featuring robots that could transform or combine with each other. “I grew up believing that robots had to be capable of such things, which became my motivation to develop this

robot,” Ishida told Reuters Television. The blue and white robot is 3.7-metres tall and can carry two passengers as it transforms into a car or humanoid form. Some people may view the robot as an “expensive toy”, but it was intended to inspire others, Ishida said. The RIDE was co-developed with Asratec, a robot consulting firm, and amusement ride manufacturer Sansei Technologies.

hen Nepali labourer Om Bahadur Purja sprained his leg in his remote village he would have faced a fourhour trek to the nearest medical centre - but for a pioneering scheme to bring healthcare to the Himalayas. Instead, the 60-year-old father of three received the treatment he needed in his home village thanks to the recent arrival of a drone carrying basic medicines and equipment. “This saved me a lot of trouble, time and money,” Purja told the Thomson Reuters Foundation from Ramche, a Himalayan village 250km northwest of the Nepali capital Kathmandu. Thousands of people living in remote areas of Nepal have no access to proper healthcare facilities, which means they have to walk or be carried long distances if they fall ill. The poor Himalayan country has just over 2600 doctors - less than one for every 10,000 people - and many of the 2000 village health posts meant to provide urgent treatment lack basic medicines as supplies often take months to reach them. That means many Nepalis resort to traditional healers or even go without any medical care. Enter Mahabir Pun, a 63-year-

bring healthcare to the Himalayas

old former teacher who won national fame more than a decade ago with an ambitious scheme to connect Himalayan villages like Ramche to the internet. Pun’s non-profit National Innovation Centre (NIC) has developed the country’s first “medical drone”, aiming to bring care to the remote mountain communities that need it most. The machine, designed and assembled by young Nepali graduates, is the most effective way of bringing health services to people in difficult-to-reach areas, said Pun. He also hopes the scheme can provide employment for talented young Nepalis who might otherwise move abroad for work. “This way I am trying to promote innovation among the young engineers and contribute to slow the trend of people leaving Nepal for jobs abroad.” The drone can carry samples of blood and other fluids to the nearest laboratory for tests, and deliver supplies, he added. At present it can only carry a one kilogram load about 2km but the team is working on improving the range so it can carry a heavier load over a longer distance.

INTERNET PROVIDERS TO BLOCK TV BOX MOVIES F

our Australian internet providers have been ordered to block streaming access to a number of copyright movies and popular TV shows via a Smart TV Box. Roadshow successfully took action against Telstra, Optus, Vocus and TPG in the Federal Court of Australia to block the online sites, through which home viewers were illegally

accessing copyright Roadshow films and TV shows. Justice John Nicholas on Friday deemed the case to be a “flagrant” facilitation of copyright infringement. Users were accessing the copyright material via the Android-operated X-96 Smart TV Box, which allows home viewers to stream movies, TV, sports, play video games

and view photos. The internet providers have 15 days to disable access to the online locations, which are mainly based in the Netherlands. “... it is apparent from the evidence that the target online locations have facilitated the infringement of copyright in cinematograph films and television broadcasts on a widespread scale,” Justice

Nicholas said. “This facilitation of the infringement of the copyright is flagrant and demonstrates a disregard by the operators of the service for the rights of copyright owners.” Justice Nicholas added that disabling the locations in question would not affect the use of the X-06 boxes in any other way other than the copyright material in question.

Dolly’s family push for blue heart ratings MELBOURNE

Q

ueensland parents and school students are being offered the chance to voice their own ideas on ways to curb cyberbullying after the death of Northern Territory teenager Dolly Everett. Dolly was 14 when she took her life on January 3, having endured years of bullying at her Queensland private school, her parents Tick and Kate Everett say. They want Australian schools to adopt a national ‘blue heart’ rating system on bullying and cybersafety. Their new foundation, Dolly’s Dream, will pursue a national approach to bullying and cybersafety in schools.

The grieving parents hope each school will one day have a blue heart rating - featuring the foundation’s logo of a blue heart, with a butterfly at its centre - reflecting the strength of prevention and response strategies. The Everetts are in the final stages of setting up Dolly’s Dream as an official charity, four months after their daughter took her life on the family’s remote NT property. They’ve now revealed what they say were terrible failings by her boarding school - Scots PGC College in the Queensland town of Warwick. Mrs Everett said her daughter was bullied from her first term

This photo taken in 2009 and provided by Akubra Hats, shows Amy “Dolly” Everett in Brunette Downs in the Northern Territory, Australia. Hundreds of people are remembering Dolly who was known as the angelic face of the Australian bushmen’s hat brand and whose family says she killed herself after being targeted by cyberbullying. A memorial service for Dolly was held in the tiny Northern Territory town of Katherine on Friday, Jan. 12, 2018 near her family’s cattle ranch.

and from the age of 12 to 14 she suffered physical, mental and online abuse by other students. Throughout it all, her parents say they kept up a constant dialogue with the school, but Dolly was branded a liar, considered a trouble-maker, and even suspended when she “decked” one of her tormentors - a boy who repeatedly pushed her over. Last November Dolly wrote a heart-breaking email to her mum about how she was confronted by a bunch of students, one of whom told her she should kill herself. A few months later, her parents found her body half-an-hour after she had gone to bed. Mrs Everett said Dolly’s school didn’t appear to have any processes to deal with what was happening to her daughter and school children should’t be at the mercy of disparate standards. In the weeks following her death, the Queensland government launched a taskforce to investigate ways to prevent cyberbullying. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says a series of public forums are now underway across the state to gather ideas about how to keep kids safe. AAP has contacted Scots PGC College for comment. FUNERAL HOME GOES HI-TECH

W

ebcasts aren’t the first thing which come to mind when thinking about funerals. But one parlour in the southeast Melbourne suburb of Dandenong wants to change that. The ASX-listed InvoCareowned funeral home is letting families webcast funeral services to their loved ones who can’t be there. “People want to celebrate the lives of their loved ones, rather than commiserate”, chief executive Martin Earp said in a statement. “We are seeing a rise in individualism and a decline in religiosity, and consumers are now demanding the ability to personalise a funeral”. The recently-opened Dandenong home has also moved away from “small unwelcoming rooms”. Instead, there’s a lounge and deck area alongside a non-denominational chapel.

Playboy designer behind bunny logo dies M agazine designer Art Paul, who created Playboy’s famous tuxedoed bunny head logo, has died aged 93. Paul died of pneumonia on Saturday at a Chicago-area hospital, according to his wife, Suzanne Seed. Paul was a freelance

illustrator when he started working with Playboy founder Hugh Hefner as the magazine’s first employee in the 1950s. He has said he crafted the bunny logo in about an hour. Paul also hired artists to create illustrations for Playboy, including Salvador Dali, Andy Warhol and Shel Silverstein. Paul was the magazine’s art director until he retired in 1982. “We didn’t think it would be such a success right from the beginning, just Hefner and I putting it together,” Paul told the Chicago Sun-Times. “Hef was kind to me. I think I gave him a lot. He gave me a lot.” Paul was born in Chicago on January 18, 1925, and studied on scholarship at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago before serving in World War II with the Army Air Corps. He returned to Chicago after the war and picked up studies at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

In this May 7, 2014 photo, Art Paul, the original Art Director for Playboy Magazine, poses in his home studio in Chicago.

AIGA, the professional association for design, says it’s a “testament to Paul’s design acumen” that the Playboy bunny logo is universally recognised even without the Playboy name. “Art deserves the credit for the illustrator’s liberation,” Christie Hefner, daughter of Hugh Hefner and former chairman and CEO of Playboy, has said. “He helped redefine the whole notion of commercial art as being able to be as well-regarded and legitimate as high art.” After his retirement he continued working, including teaching and designing for

STRANGER THINGS Season 3 in Production P roduction for the third series of Stranger Things has begun, Netflix has announced. The streaming service has posted a behind-thescenes video on social media accompanied with the message “just the facts”. The black and white video shows the cast gathering to read scripts for the next instalment of the drama. Actors Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven in the US show, and David Harbour, who starred as Police Chief Jim Hopper in the first two series, both appear in the video. A series of captions that appeared throughout the video read, “On 20th April 2018 old friends and a few strangers came together to start a new adventure”. The final caption confirmed “season three now in

production”. The announcement follows a hint from Brown that work had begun on the third instalment of the sci-fi series. Recently the 14-year-old British actress posted a photo of herself alongside Stranger Things producer Shawn Levy on Instagram. The image was captioned: “And so it begins #strangerthingsseason3.” Brown was recently included in this year’s Time top 100, alongside US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. She is the youngest person ever to be included in the annual List Of The World’s Most Influential People, which also featured Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. The award-winning Stranger Things is set in the 1980s and follows a group of children

as they experience a set of supernatural events in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. The third series will consist of eight episodes. The show’s creators, Ross and Matt Duffer, have previously suggested in interviews that it may run for up to four or five series.

magazines, advertising, television and film. He spent the last decade drawing and painting. He was a member of the Art Directors Hall of Fame and won many awards. Jennifer Hou Kwong, who is completing a documentary film about the artist called “Art of Playboy,” said Paul “changed the landscape of magazine design and layout and illustration.” Paul’s biography on the AIGA website quotes the artist as saying, “Good design principles should apply to bubble gum wrappers as well as museum posters.”

Millennials lead Australia’s

Photo - The Seed Freedom Food Festival is part of a global movement of growing sustainable food, with over 20 local businesses and producers in Adelaide sharing their organic growth in a series of food and seed swaps.

ORGANIC SHIFT

M

ore than eight million Australian households buy organic grocery products every year but the price tag associated with going chemical free is keeping millions more from getting involved, according to new research. The Australian Organic Market Report 2018, released on Monday, found the total value of the nation’s organic market has reached $2.4 billion with more than six in 10 Aussie households now buying organic products in any given year. Australian Organic chair Andrew Monk says the market will continue to grow as people have greater access to information about where and how their food is produced, with those born from the 1980s on leading the charge. “Millennials know more, they demand more and they expect more,” Mr Monk told AAP on Monday. The industry is “building

like a snowball” as more information about the potential environmental and health benefits of an organic lifestyle becomes available, he added. The cost of organic food, however, is the biggest barrier for consumers, the report found. Mr Monk says organics will always be more expensive because of the prescribed set of requirements they need to meet. But as the industry expands and more competition enters the market, prices will go down, he predicts. “Health and wellness are one of the top reasons people choose organic, and you pay a premium price for that. “As competition and supply chain maturity grow, it (the price) will keep coming

down.” There’s no clear research identifying the benefits of going organic but obesity, neurodevelopmental and reproductive disorders have been linked to chemicals in food, home cleaning and beauty products, RMIT University health sciences Professor Marc Cohen says. “I suspect eating less poison is good for you,” Prof Cohen

told AAP on Monday. Research has shown a week of eating 80 per cent organic food can reduce urinary pesticide loads by about 90 per cent, he added. The report found consumers are wary when it comes to trusting whether a product is truly organic. It recommends people look out for the Australian Certified Organic logo on products.

Federal MPs back more festival pill tests

F

ederal MPs have backed pill testing after an Australia-first trial at a Canberra music festival. More than 80 samples were tested at the Groovin the Moo event on Sunday, with two lethal chemicals, some Polish toothpaste and paint uncovered as some of the ingredients. Nearly 130 people were spoken to in the testing tent which had disposal bins. Federal Liberal backbencher Warren Entsch believes drug dealers don’t care if their products give a person a high or put them in a grave.

“How many funerals do we have to go to of people that have taken these substances and found out they’re not what they’re sold?” he told ABC radio on Tuesday. Labor senator Lisa Singh believes pill testing at festivals without fear of police needs to be an option if governments are going to get serious about harm minimisation. ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Paul Kelly said the lessons learnt from the exercise would be valuable for the territory and other states. Neither side of federal politics has a policy on the issue.

World wine output falls to 60-year low

G

lobal wine output dropped to its lowest level in 60 years in 2017 due to poor weather conditions in the European Union that slashed production in the bloc, international wine organisation OIV says. Wine production totalled 250 million hectolitres last year, down 8.6 per cent from 2016, data from the

Paris-based International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) showed. It is the

lowest level since 1957, when it had fallen to 173.8 million hectolitres, the OIV told Reuters. A hectolitre represents 100 litres, or the equivalent

of just over 133 standard 75 cl wine bottles. All top wine producers in the EU have been hit by harsh weather last year, which lead to an overall fall in the bloc of 14.6 per cent to 141 million hectolitres. The OIV’s projections, which exclude juice and must (new wine), put Italian wine production down 17 per cent at 42.5 million hectolitres, French output down 19 per cent at 36.7 million and Spanish production down 20 per cent at 32.1 million. The French government said last year production had hit a record low due to a series of poor weather conditions including spring frosts, drought and storms that affected most of the main growing regions including Bordeaux and Champagne. In contrast, production remained nearly stable in the United States, the world’s fourth largest producer, and

China, which has become the world’s seventh largest wine producer behind Australia and Argentina. Trends were mixed in Latin America, with a rise of 25 per cent in Argentina after a very low production in 2016 and a decline of 6 per cent in Chile. Global wine consumption edged higher at around 243 million hectolitres in 2017, up 1.8 per cent from a year earlier. The United States confirmed its position as largest world wine consumer with 32.6 million hectolitres, followed by France at 27 million. Vic not ruling out total drink drive ban

V

ictoria has refused to rule out banning drivers from having any alcohol in their system, amid a crackdown on dangerous behaviour behind the wheel. New laws coming into effect from Monday mean drivers who blow between 0.05 and 0.069 will lose their licence for at least three

months. They will also be forced to have an interlock device fitted for six months after getting back on the road. In spruiking the new laws, the state’s Transport Accident Commission said driving skills begin to be impaired at a blood-alcohol level of 0.02. When asked if the government would consider banning drivers from drinking at all, Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said “we will do some further studies on that”. “That’s part of our road safety initiatives that we will look at those issues,” he told reporters on Friday. Under the new laws, people caught behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs will have to complete a behavioural program. First-time drug drivers will also lose their licence for six months, up from three, with repeat offenders forced off

the road for a year. The measures will also cover drivers coming form interstate. “Everybody who is affected by drugs and alcohol will have the same rules apply, whether you’re (on) a Victorian licence at the time or you’re coming interstate and wish to get a Victorian licence,” Mr Donnellan said. Melbourne woman Karen Robinson, whose 25-year-old son Ben died while drinkdriving in Ballarat in 2009, welcomed the changes. “Sadly, my son was a repeat road traffic offender, he had done that (drink-driving) many times over a 10-year period,” she said. Ms Robinson urged drivers who consider getting behind the wheel while affected by drugs or alcohol to stop and think. “Think about your loved ones. You really don’t want them organising your funeral. It’s the worst thing that could possibly happen to your family,” she said.

ntertainment INCLUDING WHAT'S ON IN MELBOURNE + THE GIG GUIDE – BROUGHT TO YOU BY

MASTIN DELIVERS NEW SOUND FOR NEW SINGLE AND OZ TOUR CONTINUED... single as Mastin today, Not The Man For You is a rock ‘n roll belter and completely unlike anything fans have heard from him before. To add to the excitement, the debut EP, Suitcase of Stories follows in its wake, a release that truly solidifies Mastin as one of Australia’s most exciting new voices in rock ‘n roll. To celebrate, Mastin will be taking his band on the road for a sweeping tour of Australia, kicking off in Sydney, then moving through regional and metropolitan cities right around the country and stopping in for two Vic shows on May 25 & 27. This new sound has been a long time coming. From the outside, it might look like he’s already achieved it all – he won X Factor Australia in 2011, released two Platinum #1 albums with three consecutive chart-topping singles. He continues to travel around

the country and the world, performing to thousands of adoring fans every year. But while Reece is deeply humbled and grateful for his early success in this business, he admits that it came at a cost. “Giving a 16-yearold kid the opportunity to travel the country and play to thousands of screaming fans is obviously a dream come true,” he reflects. “But, as I learnt, it’s not the reality of this industry. I was kept at an arm’s length from all decisions made in my career at that time, and to be honest, I wasn’t thinking about it in the slightest. I was being a kid and living out my fantasy. When I left behind the big labels and went out by myself, I started to realise the damage that my neglect had done. I felt utterly exhausted by it all…which has made where I am now all that much sweeter. I’ve worked my ass off getting back up. Now I love having the confidence that I know exactly how to

run my business. I’m getting to be really comfortable with the man I have become.” Going through adolescence, learning about yourself, and becoming who you are not things that are easily achieved, and much less so when it’s all happening on a global platform. Mastin has taken it all in his stride, taking mistakes as lessons and continuing to chase his one true passion, his calling, that thing that started it all – music. “In my opinion, the closest things we have to magic in this world are music and love.” says Mastin. “Taking the path through music that I have has made it hard to let people know the real me. But, I know that this new record explains who I am as an artist, and where I’m heading. Music has always been for me, anyway, and it’s as much about how the music makes you feel as the words that accompany it affect you too. Marrying the right sound to the stories I have is

crucial!” So what happens next? Mastin is thrilled to announce the new single and record, and is grateful for his loyal fans for their patience, saying “I can’t wait for people to hear the new music - for my fans that have been waiting so patiently, and music lovers that I’d love to meet through this record. I can happily say it has been the most enjoyable record I’ve made and it was really nice that through the process I’ll get to introduce the real me. I believe this is the beginning of something - I’m not sure where the road will lead, but I know for sure that I am dedicated to walk down it. I’m not going anywhere anytime soon, rock n roll is not dead, and I’m here to prove it.” Mastin ‘Suitcase Of Stories’ Tour circles the country over the next few months.Tickets are on sale now via Oztix and for more details visit reecemastinofficial.com

F

resh back from the Red Hot Summer Tour with Suzi Quatro, Nat Allison returns to the Seaford Hotel with a special treat for local music fans. For many years Nat has graced our local stages when between tours, performing her solo acoustic show and making many friends along the way. Friday May 18, Nat’s back and she’s bringing drums and bass, ready to rock the place. From the Studio to the stage, Nat Allison delivers a pitchperfect scream, strut antics and evil guitar showboat. A high energy, guitar heavy performance with tough lyrics, powerful vocals and guitar solos to match. To date Nat has played some 5000 gigs, including festivals and opening for big names such as Jimmy Barnes, The Screaming Jets, Martha Davis and The Motels, Invertigo and numerous others. Journeying to New York more than twenty times to write

and record with Producer/ Songwriter Mike Chapman (Blondie, Suzi Quatro, The Sweet, Smokey and countless others). The partnership has produced exciting material with Allison and Chapman continuing to add to their already impressive catalogue. Nat’s song ‘Anyone for Tennis’ was chosen by Channel Seven as the theme song for the 2010 Australian Open ad campaign and at the same time the single was released on iTunes (Australia) through Standard/ Universal records. ‘Anyone For Tennis’ was also used by Eurosport in the U.K for the coverage of the Australian Open in 2012. One of Nat’s career highlights was in 2010 when she was invited to London to play guitar on legendary ‘Suzi Quatro’s’ latest album titled ‘In The Spotlight’ as well as being a guest on stage with Suzi on her 2011 Australian tour. Since then, Nat has toured the country playing in Suzi Q’s

I like the finer things in life, watching Better Homes & Gardens on a Friday night, a nice new pair of socks, and getting a really good bargain at the op shop. BT-50 built tougher for Australia

R

eady to take on the toughest Aussie terrains, Mazda has released the New Look BT-50 exclusive to Australia. Designed and developed locally, the New Look BT-50 is purpose built for Australians looking for a tough ute that will tackle everything from the daily grind to off road adventures. With major front-end design changes and added equipment across grades, this is the second and most comprehensive update to the Mazda BT-50 since its launch in 2011. The front-end changes are bolstered by equipment upgrades across the range, which includes an exciting first for Mazda, the introduction of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across all grades. The flagship GT will take another step up in class, offering more convenience and design

differentiation as standard. The GT adds a chrome Sports Bar with integrated high-mounted LED stop light, a heavy-duty tub liner to protect the tub and tailgate from scuffs and dents, tailgate central locking to safely secure gear in the tray and a single 12 volt auxiliary socket and light to aid visibility in the tub. The XT will see the biggest changes with the addition of

a Reverse Camera to improve rear vision and a 7-inch Alpine Infotainment System to keep drivers connected to the world around them. Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi, said the Australian-only BT-50 is an important step in the vehicle’s evolution. “The BT-50 has already won fans in Australia, offering safety,

comfort, performance and answering customer’s practical needs with great towing power and payload,” said Mr Bhindi. “We know Australian customers want all this and a tough looking exterior, so we heeded demand and worked with local engineers to refresh the front-end and toughen up the BT-50.” The BT-50 will go on sale across Australia in May.

For Hartley, the imminent arrival of his own Honda Civic Type R brings back a few memories: “Would you believe it, my first ever road car was a 1996 model year Honda Civic,” recalled the New Zealander. “So it’s nice to get the upgrade to the Type R. The only downside is that, with 21 Grands Prix and the really busy F1 schedule away from the track, I won’t get to drive it as much as I’d like.” Honda launched the 2.0-litre VTEC TURBO engine model in mid-2017, to deliver the most rewarding driving experience of any Civic Type R. Peak power output from the optimised engine is 228kW at 6500rpm and peak torque is 400Nm from 25004500rpm. It covers the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint in just 5.7 seconds and will go on to a top reigning World Champion in the World Endurance Championship. speed of 272 km/h (169 mph). he 2017 model Civic Type R, which is manufactured at Honda of the UK Manufacturing (HUM), is the ideal fit for a Formula 1 racing driver on or off the track. Coined as the ‘race car for the road’, it holds the record for the fastest front-wheel drive car ever around the Nürburgring Nordschleife with a lap time of 7min 43.8sec. Both Gasly and Hartley are competing in their first full season

of Formula 1 this year, having driven in the 2017 championship for five and four rounds respectively. Finishing fourth in the Bahrain Grand Prix last month, Gasly scored his first ever F1 points and Red Bull Scuderia Toro Rosso’s first of the season. Gasly and Hartley have another important point in common also. Both are champions, with Pierre having taking the GP2 title in 2016 and Brendon a double and

CAMERAS TO NAB TEXTING DRIVERS

D

rug drivers and motorists who illegally use their mobile phones will be targeted in the NSW government’s road safety reforms which include world-leading technology to nab texting drivers. The reforms, which passed NSW parliament on Wednesday, extend powers to authorities for roadside oral testing of cocaine, increase penalties for driving under the influence and introduce red-light-style cameras capable of detecting mobile phones used by drivers. Roads Minister Melinda Pavey said NSW was the first state in Australia to introduce the legislation which would come into effect from July 1 this year. Ms Pavey noted from 2012 to 2017 there were 184 crashes which involved illegal mobile phone use, resulting in seven deaths and 105 injuries. The move also follows a crash in February where two police officers were critically injured after a driver allegedly looked at his phone for 10-20 seconds when he ploughed

into them in Sydney’s southwest. The new camera technology will be similar to the automated cameras in force to address speeding and red-light running which the NSW government says have been “highly effective”. “Driving under the influence of drugs has emerged as a significant

factor in our road toll, along with alcohol, speeding, fatigue and mobile phone distraction,” Ms Pavey said in a statement on Wednesday. Last year 74 people lost their lives in crashes where a driver or rider had an illicit drug present in their system.

TEAM USA STARS SET TO COME TO AUSTRALIA A

ndrew Bogut believes two games between Team USA and the Boomers will draw the biggest names in basketball to Australia and lead to growth in the NBL. The Australian side is set to take on the Americans in Melbourne in 2019 in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics. Bogut told SEN Breakfast on Thursday players in the US were excited about the trip down under. “From what I’ve heard pretty much everyone has put their hands up barring injury,” Bogut said.

The NBA star-turned Sydney King said the games would be a good curtain raiser for the Australian side leading into the World Cup in China and the 2020 Olympics. “Team USA last played in Australia in 2002 ... (We) haven’t really had a quality national team come out here in decades,” he said. Bogut said the big tournaments coupled with the NBL’s growth and the “increased takeover of Aussies in the NBA” would be “massive” for Australian basketball. “To have that

Van Marwijk said Karacic could fill a void at right-back. “Everybody knows that the right defending position, I don’t have a lot of choice for that position,” van Marwijk said. “He is already the captain of his team, at 21-years-old. “He plays only right-back and we don’t have a lot of players in that position ... it’s a position we discuss a lot.” Karacic’s father is Australian but he hasn’t played in Australia. Van Marwijk, who will oversee the Socceroos’ cup campaign before handing the reins to Graham Arnold, retained the 26 players from recent friendlies, including established core Mile Jedinak, Aaron Mooy, Mat Ryan, Mathew Leckie, Robbie Kruse, Massimo Luongo and Tomi Juric. Striker Jamie McLaren’s recent goal-scoring in Scotland won him a recall with goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak, Alex Gersbach and Apostolos Giannou other additions

Van Marwijk said he would trim the squad to 26 or 27 players in about a week. The squad will then attend a pre-Cup training camp in Turkey before the final 23-man squad for the World Cup is named on June 9, a week before their tournament-opener against France. Provisional squad: Goalkeepers: Brad Jones, Mitch Langerak, Mat Ryan, Danny Vukovic Defenders: Aziz Behich, Milos Degenek, Alex Gersbach, Matthew Jurman , Fran Karacic, James Meredith, Josh Risdon, Trent Sainsbury, Aleksandar Susnjar, Bailey Wright Midfielders: Josh Brillante, Jackson Irvine, Mile Jedinak, Robbie Kruse, Massimo Luongo, Mark Milligan, Aaron Mooy, Tom Rogic, James Troisi Forwards: Daniel Arzani, Tim Cahill, Apostolos Giannou, Tomi Juric, Mathew Leckie, Jamie Maclaren, Andrew Nabbout, Dimitri Petratos, Nikita Rukavytsya.

TEAM 11 SHOWCASE

A-LEAGUE STADIUM PLANS

M

omentum is building behind an expansion A-League team in southeast Melbourne, with plans and a site for a 15,000-seat stadium based in Dandenong unveiled on Monday. One of Australia’s best-known sports investors Gerry Ryan and well-loved Socceroos, Vince Grella, threw their support behind the “Team 11” bid, declaring the region perfect for an A-League and W-League outfit. “Just look at the opportunity to unite the community and build something great,” Ryan told AAP. “There’s 1.2 million people here. There’s so many clubs here. “It’s common sense to have an A-League club here. It would be a success.” Ryan founded cycling outfit Orica-Scott, has invested in the A-League’s Brisbane Roar and NRL heavyweights Melbourne Storm, as well as sitting on AFL club St Kilda’s board. The BRW rich-lister said investing in the club or the stadium was on his radar. “I’m open to it depending on the people,” he said. “I can also be an advisor. I can talk about structure and developing cultures.” The Dandenong stadium is viewed as a game-changer for the Team 11 bid, which is backed by three major councils in south-east Melbourne. The Greater Dandenong Council will gift the land to the team if they are selected as a successful bidder, paving the way for the $170 million stadium which still needs additional public and private investment.

The stadium would house Team 11’s A-League, W-League and youth teams, with the potential to host NRL and Super Rugby matches and other major events. Grella said the region’s contribution to the national team was remarkable. “Jackson Irvine, Bailey Wright, Scott McDonald, myself ... that’s four Socceroos from here and there are definitely potential Socceroos out there,” he told AAP. “I would have loved to have played football where I was born ... the stadium plans look great. “I wish I could turn back the clock to play in it.” The bid also won qualified support from potential rivals Melbourne Victory on Monday. Speaking on SEN, Victory chief executive Trent Jacobs said the club supported expansion in principle and he favoured another club in Victory’s backyard - provided it wasn’t based at AAMI Park. “We’d probably be a little disappointed if another Melbourne club came and played out of AAMI Park,” he said. “To have another rival in Melbourne ... with their own stadium would only be a good thing.” Competition for an A-League licence has intensified over the past month after FFA announced it would accept two new teams into the competition for the 2019/2020 season. An announcement on those teams will be made in October. Up to a dozen consortiums are putting together their bid documents in the hope of admission into the A-League.

BOOT EXCITE NFL

S

eattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is full of wonder for the wizardry Michael Dickson can perform with his boot on an NFL ball but there is another characteristic he noticed about the former Sydney Swans prospect. It was the 21-yearold’s toughness. “The fact that Michael doesn’t

want to wear a helmet if he doesn’t have to says enough,” Carroll told reporters after the Seahawks dramatically struck a deal with the Denver Broncos during the weekend’s NFL Draft to move up and snare the Australian in the fifth round. The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles are also chuffed with their new Australian recruit. They used their final pick on 207cm tall, 155kg Jordan Mailata, despite the giant former South Sydney junior rugby league forward never playing a game of American football. The Eagles became intrigued when they saw a show reel Mailata’s management uploaded on YouTube of the forward stampeding rugby league opponents. “I’m sure all of you have seen it,” Philadelphia’s executive vice president Howie Roseman told reporters. “People are bouncing off him. “That was impressive.” Then Eagles’ offensive line coaches Jeff Stoutland and Eugene Chung then scouted and worked Mailata out and were blown away by his potential. “We’re excited about the size and athleticism,” Roseman said. Unlike Mailata who only arrived in the US a few months ago, Dickson has spent the past three years shattering punting records at the University of Texas. He capped it off with the

MVP award in December’s Texas Bowl by destroying the University of Missouri with his pinpoint punts and he claimed the Ray Guy Award for best punter in college football. “He can do stuff with a ball that we haven’t seen yet,” Carroll said. Seahawks general manager John Schneider recalled the day Dickson arrived in Seattle for a pre-draft workout and the city was hit by a savage rain storm. The Seahawks told Dickson he might not be able to workout. “The kid was down in the dumps,” Schneider said. “It let up a little bit and they went out in some nasty weather and he still crushed it. “His workout was one of the coolest things. “This guy does stuff with the ball that is amazing.” Ironically it was Dickson’s punting coach, ProKick Australia’s Nathan Chapman, who first opened Schneider’s eyes to Australian rules players. Chapman, after playing for Brisbane and Hawthorn in the AFL, had a stint at the Green Bay Packers in 2004 when Schneider was an executive. “They are so talented with the ball,” the executive, asked about Aussie rules converts, said. “We had a guy in Green Bay who could drop kick footballs from 50 or 60 yards. “He’d run from different angles and kick it through the goals. “It was really cool.”

Brazil’s Koxa surfs biggest wave on record B

razilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa was named a ‘world record holder’ at the weekend after the judging panel at the World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Awards decided he had ridden an 80-foot (24.38m) wave in Portugal last year. Koxa won the “Biggest Wave” award for successfully managing the huge swell off Nazare on Portugal’s Silver Coast on November 8, his ride adjudged to have bettered American Garrett McNamara’s record of 78 feet at the same break in 2011. “I try to surf big waves all my life and I had a huge experience in 2014 where I almost

died at Nazare,” Koxa told worldsurfleague.com. “Four months later, I had bad dreams, I didn’t travel, I got scared, and my wife helped me psychologically. Now, I’m just so happy and this is the best day of my life.” Andrew Cotton might be forgiven a few bad dreams after his spectacular wipeout at Nazare on the same day as Koxa nailed his big ride. The Englishman, who was left nursing 12 broken vertebrae in his back and is only now almost ready to get back into the water, was awarded the “Wipeout of the Year” at the ceremony in Santa Monica, California.

arlton coach Brendon Bolton admits his side’s recordbreaking winless start to 2018 churns and hurts him but he is confident the Blues will eventually be repaid for the pain they are currently enduring. “I don’t want to get into a mode where our players think or accept that not winning is okay,” said Bolton after Saturday’s

55-point loss to Adelaide which saw Carlton slump to 0-7, the worst start to a season in the proud club’s 122-year history. “I churn after losses; losing games isn’t okay (and) we’ve got to learn what a high performance is. “I’m human - I feel for our supporters, I feel for our coaches and players that they can’t get that positive vibe just yet from a win.
