B
rothers-in-law Tai Tuivasa and Tyson Pedro are crying foul after they missed out on bonuses during UFC 221 at Perth Arena. Former Sydney Roosters junior Tuivasa performed Daniel Ricciardo’s trademark “shoey” celebration after winning his heavyweight showdown against Frenchman Cyril Asker. Tuivasa, who has a young son with Pedro’s sister, unleashed a series of powerful punches to win his bout by TKO in the first round. Pedro also won in the first round, pulling off a stunning kimura submission to beat Russian Saparbek Safarov in their light heavyweight bout. ... continued page 52 >>

CALOMBARIS ESCAPES ASSAULT CONVICTION
M
asterChef host George Calombaris has had his assault conviction overturned by a Sydney judge. The restaurateur was fined $1000 after pleading guilty in Downing Centre Local Court in October for assaulting a then 19-year-old at the A-League grand final between Sydney FC and Melbourne Victory in Sydney. But Judge Andrew Scotting overturned the conviction on Wednesday after agreeing with Calombaris’ lawyer that the 39-year-old had suffered significant financial and personal loss and was unlikely to re-offend. His lawyer, David Edwardson, told the NSW District Court appeal hearing Calombaris had lost $750,000 in endorsements after Bulla Dairy and ULR Land Rover severed ties with him. Calombaris told the judge he was deeply remorseful for his actions and he had stood down from his role as Victory’s number one ticket holder and banned himself from attending football games in Australia for 12 months.

AirAsia to ditch Melbourne for
GEELONG
T
wice-daily flights to southeast Asia are set to land in regional Victoria within a year as AirAsia ditches Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport for Geelong. The Victorian government says an international Avalon Airport terminal will be up and running in 12 months, ferrying hundreds of thousands of passengers to and from Kuala Lumpur. The project is expected to cost more than $20 million, create 30 construction jobs and
about 200 ongoing roles, with up to 50 reserved for ex-car manufacturers. “We’ve had our share of bad news in Geelong, with Ford and of course Alcoa and the heavy manufacturing leaving our shores ... which meant we needed to look at alternative employment methods,” Tourism Minister John Eren told reporters on Sunday. The announcement boosted calls for a rail link to Avalon Airport by its owner Linfox Group.
“We need the rail link, but that’s natural,” Linfox founder Lindsay Fox AC said. “That was promised by the previous government. They might sort of react from now.” The federal government was backing the Avalon expansion but when asked about a rail link, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said it was “early days”. Over time, Avalon could also host flights to Indonesia and Thailand, AirAsia Group chief executive Tony Fernandes said.
Russian woman has been charged over a violent brawl among several men on a cruise ship off Sydney during an argument about a queue for the toilets. The 37-year-old woman allegedly struck a 21-yearold man with an empty wine bottle, causing a cut to his head, during a fight between several men, including her husband, about 1am on Sunday, police said. Six men, including the injured man, and the woman were removed from the ship at Bradley’s Head later in the afternoon. The men were subsequently released without charge pending further inquiries, while the Russian national was charged with reckless wounding and affray, and granted conditional bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on March 9.

Teen thrown into witches’ cauldron injured MICHAEL DOUGLAS’
A
woman has suffered serious burns when she was thrown into a witches’ cauldron at a carnival celebration in south-western Germany. The woman, 18, landed up to her knees in hot water during the incident in the town of Eppingen on Saturday. Her legs were badly scalded and she was taken to a specialist clinic for treatment, a police spokesman told dpa on Monday.
Police said they were investigating six people for causing serious bodily harm and failure to assist a person in danger. The cauldron full of scalding hot water was bubbling away over an open fire on a cart that was being pulled by several people. They did not stop to help her after the incident, the police spokesman said. Some 2,000 revellers had
dressed as witches for an annual “witches’ procession” organised by a local club as part of the regional Fasnet carnival tradition. Dating back to the 13th century, Fasnet focuses on witches and devils in elaborate costumes, often with ghoulish, hand-carved wooden masks. Eppingen’s witches’ club, Hexenzunft Eppingen, has been organising its own annual processions since 2003.
RAREST WHITE DIAMOND EVER TO GO ON SALE
A
flawless diamond, the size of a large strawberry, is expected to fetch a world record price when it goes on sale at
Sotheby’s in London this month. Weighing just over 102 carats, the round, brilliant white stone is smaller than a 118-carat oval diamond sold in Hong Kong in 2013, which currently holds the record price per carat. But Sotheby’s, which also handled that Hong Kong sale, expects the smaller stone’s rarity and high quality will see it attract an even higher price. “That (stone sold in Hong Kong) fetched $US260,000 ($A364,000) a carat, currently the world record for any
colourless diamond. This one being a round brilliant cut - the asking price will be north of that,” Patti Wong, chairman of Sotheby’s Diamonds told Reuters. The diamond is the only stone over 100 carats to have been given the highest grades in every criteria by the Gemological Institute of America, which judges a precious stone’s quality, Sotheby’s said. It has not disclosed the asking price for the stone, which will be sold in a private sale.
SON: PRISON MADE ME A MAN
T
he troubled son of Hollywood star Michael Douglas says the love of his family got him through his “darkest days” in prison. Cameron Douglas, 39, praised his famous father and his stepmother Catherine Zeta-Jones for standing by him while he was serving a seven-year sentence for drug offences. “My family never gave up on me, not for one second,” he told the Mail on Sunday, following his release. “Catherine is a scrapper, she’s someone who came from Wales and clawed her way up to the very top through sheer talent and determination. “She never gives up on anything and she didn’t quit on me. The love of my family got me through my darkest days.” Cameron is the grandson of screen legend Kirk Douglas, and the eldest child of 73-year-old Michael Douglas - known for films including Wall Street and Fatal Attraction - and the actor’s first wife Diandra Luker.

Vast wealth of Catholic church revealed
T
he Catholic Church has been revealed as Victoria’s largest non-government property owner, casting doubt over claims it would be forced to cut social work if forced to compensate victims of clergy sexual abuse. An investigation by Fairfax Media published on Monday reports that the church appears to own more than $30 billion in property and other assets across Australia. Fairfax estimated the church’s Victorian portfolio to be about $9 billion, but in evidence to the royal commission in 2014 it valued its Melbourne properties at $109 million. The apparent wealth of the church contrasts with findings by the royal commission, which found the average payout by the church’s compensation scheme established by former archbishop George Pell 20 years ago was $35,000 or less for those who had been
abused by clergy. “These figures confirm what we have known; there is huge inequity between the Catholic Church’s wealth and their responses to survivors,” Helen Last, chief executive of the In Good Faith Foundation, which supports abuse survivors told Fairfax. “The 600 survivors registered for our foundation’s services continue to experience minimal compensation and lack of comprehensive care in relation to their church abuses. They say their needs are the lowest of church priorities.” The government is rolling out a redress scheme for survivors from July 1, fulfilling a key recommendation of the child abuse royal commission. The Catholic Church, which had already promised to join the national redress scheme, urged the states and territories to act.
RAW CHICKEN A PET PARALYSIS RISK: STUDY
I
f you like to give your beloved pooch a chicken neck to gnaw on as a treat, you might want to reconsider. A new study has found eating raw chicken increases the risk of dogs developing a paralysing and sometimes fatal condition by more than 70 times. Researchers from the University of Melbourne’s U-Vet Werribee Animal Hospital say the cause of acute polyradiculoneuritis (APN) in dogs has always baffled vets. But their new study has identified raw chicken, and especially chicken necks, as a major risk factor. APN is a relatively rare but debilitating condition that
initially causes weakness in the hind legs that can spread to the front legs, neck, head and face. Some dogs die if their chests are affected. Those who survive can take six months to recover. The paralysis is caused by the dog’s immune system becoming unregulated and attacking its own nerve roots, and is the doggy equivalent of Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) in humans. The bacteria Campylobacter is now considered a trigger agent in up to 40 per cent of people who GBS and it’s present in undercooked chicken. Chief investigator Dr Matthias le Chevoir and his colleagues set out to determine if raw chicken could also trigger APN in dogs. They looked at the diets of 27 dogs with symptoms of the disease and compared them with a symptom-free control group, finding Campylobacter was the likely reason for immune system impairment and paralysis. Researchers say the findings are a concern given the growing popularity of raw meat diets for dogs. They say dog owners should choose regular dog food over raw chicken until more research is done.
MOOMBA MONARCHS CROWNED IN MELBOURNE
M
elbourne’s annual Moomba Festival has named its ‘monarchs’ as broadcast personality Chrissie Swan and kids entertainer Jimmy Giggle. The pair, who will be the public faces of the festival, were announced on Monday by acting Lord Mayor Arron Wood with more than 80,000 expected to attend the annual parade.
“We’re really proud of Melbourne and we want people with kids to just get out of the house and do something ... get on a train and just do it and have an adventure,” ‘queen’ Chrissie Swan told reporters.

Crash diets can reduce heart function C
rash diets such as popular meal replacement programs can cause short term deterioration in heart function, a UK study has found. Researchers warn anyone with an underlying heart condition should seek medical advice before adopting a very low calorie diet. Dr Jennifer Rayner, a clinical research fellow at the University of Oxford says these diets have a very low calorie content and can be effective for losing weight, reducing blood pressure, and reversing diabetes. “But the effects on the heart have not been studied until now,” said Dr Rayner. The University of Oxford study used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate the impact of a calorie restricted meal replacement program
on heart function and the distribution of fat in the abdomen, liver, and heart muscle. Presented at the CMR 2018 meeting in Barcelona, the study involved 21 obese men and women who consumed 600 to 800 kcal per day for eight weeks. An MRI was performed at the start of the study and again at one and eight weeks. After one week, total body fat, visceral (deep tissue) fat and liver fat had all significantly fallen. This was accompanied by significant improvements in insulin resistance, fasting total cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose and blood pressure. However, heart fat content had risen by 44 per cent. This was associated with a deterioration in heart function, including the heart’s ability to pump blood. By eight weeks, heart fat
content and function had improved and all other measurements including body fat and cholesterol were continuing to improve. “The metabolic improvements with a very low calorie diet, such as a reduction in liver fat and reversal of diabetes, would be expected to improve heart function. Instead, heart function got worse in the first week before starting to improve,” said Dr Rayner. Dr Rayner says otherwise healthy people may not notice the initial temporary change in heart function but “caution” is needed in people with heart disease. “If you have heart problems, you need to check with your doctor before embarking on a very low calorie diet or fasting. People with a cardiac problem could well experience more symptoms at
this early time point, so the diet should be supervised.” Australian cardiologist Professor Bob Graham, Executive Director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute says it appears such a low calorie diet causes fat to be released from the liver and other parts of the body and this “overwhelms” the heart in the short term. Professor Graham supports the call for caution but is not alarmed by the study. “There are very very few people who can sustain a diet of 600 to 800 calories for eight weeks, that’s a very strict diet and I am surprised they were able to get anyone to stick to it, so I don’t think it’s a lot of people that we need to worry about who go on to such a severe diet,” said Prof Graham.
SMOKERS, DRINKERS TOLD TO AVOID HOT TEA
H
ot tea and heavy alcohol consumption can increase the risk of a deadly cancer five-fold, research has shown. Oesophageal cancer was already known to be linked to drinking alcohol and smoking, but those risks are heightened by the addition of daily cups of “burning hot” tea, scientists discovered. Oesophageal cancer, which affects the food-pipe or gullet, is notorious for poor survival rates. Each year the disease is newly diagnosed in around 9,211 people in the UK and causes almost 7,800 deaths. An estimated 15 per cent of patients who develop the cancer are still alive after five years.
SEAFORD
Dental Clinic
Established Since 1977 Family owned and operated for over 40 years...
The new tea warning emerged from China, where researchers followed the progress of 456,155 participants aged 30 to 79 for around nine years. High-temperature tea drinking combined with either alcohol consumption or smoking was associated with a greater risk of oesophageal cancer than hot tea alone. Dr Canqing Yu and colleagues from the National Natural Science Foundation of China wrote in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine: “Compared with participants who drank tea less than weekly and consumed fewer than 15g of alcohol daily, those who drank burning hot tea and 15g or more of alcohol daily had the greatest risk for oesophageal cancer.”
Combined with excess alcohol consumption, hot tea raised the relative risk of developing the disease five times, the study found. Current smokers who drank hot tea daily doubled their risk. Previous research had suggested that “thermal injury” caused by drinking hot liquids could increase the danger from other risk factors, said the researchers. They concluded: “Abstaining from hot tea might be beneficial for preventing oesophageal cancer in persons who drink alcohol excessively or smoke.”

K Hero dog sniffs out Taiwan quake survivors
A
rescue dog in Taiwan has been hailed a hero for finding earthquake survivors trapped in rubble while taking part in its first mission in the field. In a video released by the Fire Bureau of Taichung City, Tie Hsiung, a Labrador whose name translates as Iron Hero is seen sniffing for survivors and alerting rescuers to a human presence. Agencies reported that he discovered one survivor who had been trapped in the rubble
for 15 hours, and another person who subsequently died. The dog received an outpouring of support from across Taiwan, including from the mayor of Taichung, the city which sent him to assist in rescue efforts, local media reported. The 6.4 magnitude earthquake, which struck the coastal city of Hualien on Tuesday, has killed at least 10 people and aftershocks have hampered rescue efforts.
ate Moss has revealed that she lost her virginity at 14. Moss, now 44, said she was discovered, by Storm Models’ founder Sarah Doukas at JFK airport in New York, shortly afterwards. Describing the moment which set her on the path to catwalk stardom, she told Love magazine: “I was smoking. I was 14 and I’d just lost my virginity. “So I thought I was the bee’s knees. I was in the airport, puffing away.” The model said of her attitude to stardom: “I don’t believe the hype. Ever. I think to keep your feet on the ground in this business is so important.” And the mother-of-one added: “I’ve seen girls come and go, when they think they’re suddenly more important ... it’s like woah.” Doukas is said to have approached Moss as soon as the seatbelt sign was turned off on their flight back to England, after spotting her at the airport.

TOUMA, SEERS Buckingham Palace rewiring reveals history JAILED FOR N FOOTY COCAINE RING
W
hen retired rugby league player John Touma’s mum was murdered he turned to drugs, and it wasn’t long before he ran a lucrative cocaine ring that boasted professional footballers as customers. Touma, a back-rower with the Eastern Suburbs Roosters in the 1980s, ran his empire from a Mermaid Waters unit, using a wine business as a front for his illicit dealings. He used former NSW State of Origin fullback Matt Seers as one of his couriers, and his clients included code-hopping star Karmichael Hunt and retired Origin utility Jason Smith. The drug ring was uncovered through a Crime and Corruption Commission investigation, which led to seven Gold Coast NRL players being arrested and charged with drug offences in 2014 and 2015.
ewspaper clippings from 1889 are among the items discovered under the floorboards of Buckingham Palace during renovation works. The ripped fragments of a November 27 edition of the Evening Standard, almost 130 years ago, were found along with three empty cigarette packets as potentially dangerous wiring was replaced. The work is part of a 10-year refurbishment of Buckingham Palace, expected to cost nearly GBP370 million ($A725 million), to avoid the risk of “catastrophic building failure” at the Queen’s main residence. The removal of vulcanised
Indian rubber (VIR) cabling, which was installed in the late 1940s, is the first stage of the re-servicing of the building. So far 2km of the wiring has been replaced, equivalent to the length of 40 Olympic sized swimming pools, the palace said. The Queen’s audience room was among those rewired, with work taking place as she stayed at Balmoral. The refit of Buckingham Palace, which has been described as “essential” by officials, will include replacing
boilers and miles of cables, pipes and electrical wires. The works are intended to prevent the danger or fire, flood or damage to the historic building and its priceless art collection and keep the palace “fit for purpose”.
SAM NEWMAN FLAGS MELBOURNE LORD MAYOR RUN
P
rovocative AFL Footy Show host Sam Newman is reportedly considering running for Melbourne Lord Mayor after the former one stood down amid sexual harassment allegations. Newman has told News Corp he is considering a tilt at the job on a platform of getting rid of homelessness in the CBD,
cleaning up graffiti and ignoring minority group agendas. The Lord Mayor role is empty after Robert Doyle resigned while fighting allegations of sexual harassment. Moreland City councillor Oscar Yildiz confirmed he would run to be lord mayor, state Labor MP and former emergency services minister Jane Garrett said she
had been approached to run, while acting Lord Mayor Arron Wood had yet to confirm if he would contest. Former City of Melbourne councillor Tessa Sullivan in December claimed sexual misconduct by the then-lord mayor against her and colleague Cathy Oke and the allegations are being investigated.

Square-eyed Vic teens pick tech over sport
S
quare-eyed, technologyobsessed Victorian teenagers are turning their backs on sport, with more than nine out of 10 youths failing to exercise for at least an hour a day. A VicHealth report highlighted 92 per cent of school-age teens weren’t getting the bare minimum hour of daily exercise and, at age 15 to 17, were five times more likely to be glued to their television, smartphone, tablet or laptop than be active. In response, the state health body announced on Monday it
would fund a $6 million, threeyear program in a bid to reignite dwindling interest. “Many teenagers have told us that they stopped playing sport because it stopped being fun,” VicHealth boss Jerril Rechter said after the organisation surveyed around 6000 teens on their sporting views. “Other reasons include too much focus on the competition and skill level and teenagers having to juggle other commitments like their academic performance, part-time work and
social lives.” The initiative will attempt to break down the perceived hurdles of getting involved with contemporary junior sports programs, opting instead for sessions that focus on participation rather than results. “We want to see sport programs that are low-cost, social, and less focused on winning and being the best, and more focused on having fun and building skills,” Ms Rechter said. The results came as health experts warned this crop of teens
RARE DINOSAUR DISCOVERY IN EGYPT
A
skeleton has been unearthed in Egypt’s Western Desert, where ancient sands have long helped preserve remains, but unlike most finds this one isn’t a mummy - it’s a dinosaur. Researchers from Mansoura University in the country’s Nile Delta discovered the new species of long-necked herbivore, which is around the size of a city bus, and it could be just the tip of the sand dune for other desert dinosaur discoveries. “As in any ecosystem, if we went to the jungle we’ll find a lion and a giraffe. So we found the giraffe, where’s the lion?” said Hesham Sallam, leader of the excavation team and head of the university’s Centre for Vertebrate Paleontology. Sallam, along with four Egyptian and five
American researchers, authored an article in the journal Nature Ecology & Evolution published on January 29 announcing the discovery. Experts say the find is a landmark one that could shed light on a particularly obscure period of history for the African continent, roughly the 30 million years before dinosaurs went extinct, between 70 million and 80 million years ago. Named “Mansourasaurus Shahinae” after the team’s university and for one of the paleontology department’s founders, the find is the only dinosaur from that period to have been discovered in Africa, and it may even be an undiscovered genus.
could be the first generation with a lower life-expectancy than their parents “Low levels of physical activity are a key driver of this change,” Ms Rechter added.
BERLIN WALL DOWN JUST AS LONG AS IT WAS UP
B
erlin The Berlin Wall, the symbol of a divided Germany and a postwar world divided between a western bloc and an eastern bloc, has now been down as long as it was up. The Berlin Wall stood for exactly 28 years, two months and 26 days. Monday marks the day that it has been down for exactly the same amount of time. Communist East Germany started erecting the Wall on August 13, 1961. It effectively sealed West Berlin off from East Berlin and the surrounding East German countryside. It was breached on the night of November 9, 1989, paving the way for the reunification of Germany on October 3, 1990.

Robot makes coffee at new cafe in Tokyo
J
apan has a new robot cafe where customers can enjoy coffee brewed and served by a robot barista. The robot named Sawyer debuted this week at Hennna Cafe in Tokyo’s downtown business and shopping district of Shibuya. The shop’s name in Japanese means “strange cafe”. The single-armed robot scans a ticket purchased from a vending machine and greets the customer. “Would you care for a delicious coffee?” the barista, with a screen showing a pair of cartoon eyes, asks in a flat tone. “I can make
one better than human beings around here.” It grinds the coffee beans, fills a filter and pours hot water over a paper cup for up to five people at once. A cup of brewed coffee costs 320 yen ($A3.65) and takes a few minutes. Sawyer can also operate an automated machine for six other hot drinks including cappuccino, hot chocolate and green tea latte. Customers, many of them young men, took photos with their smartphones while they waited in line. The cafe operator, travel agency
H.I.S. Co, says robots can increase productivity while also entertaining customers. “An essential point is to increase productivity,” said Masataka Tamaki, general manager of corporate planning at H.I.S. He said only one person needs to oversee the robot cafe, compared to several people needed at a regular coffee shop, so it can serve better quality coffee at a reasonable price. Tamaki says it’s not just about efficiency. “We want the robot to entertain customers so it’s not

like buying coffee at a vending machine,” he said. Takeshi Yamamoto, a 68-year-old restaurant employee who works in the neighbourhood, said his first experience with the robot cafe was very enjoyable and his robot-made coffee was delicious. “It’s quite rich, and tastes very good,” Yamamoto said, as he took a sip. “You can get machine-made coffee at convenience stores, too, and it’s actually good. But here, I had great fun.”
TWITTER APPEAL HELPS FIND GILCHRIST’S DOG

almost-700,000 Twitter followers helped find his family’s lost dog. The 46-year-old, who retired in 2008 after 96 Tests and almost 300 one-day internationals, turned to social media recently after discovering the Gilchrists’ cavoodle Honey has escaped their home in Subiaco, Perth. In a series of tweets describing the light caramel pup, he acknowledged Twitter had previously led him to find his wife’s lost watch. “Twitter has helped me before so here goes,” he said. It was again good news for Gilly. The father of four tweeted 13 hours after losing Honey, she was back on the lounge, “conked out in her usual spot”.
New SpaceX rocket launched in test flight
S
paceX’s big new rocket has blasted off on its first test flight, carrying a red sports car on an endless road trip past Mars. The Falcon Heavy rocket launched from the same Florida pad used by NASA nearly 50 years ago to send men to the moon. With liftoff, the Heavy became the most powerful rocket in use today. Its three boosters and 27 engines roared
to life at Kennedy Space Centre. Not only did the rocket lift a red sports car into orbit - with a dummy “Starman” at the wheel - two of the three boosters came back and landed upright at Cape Canaveral. The 15-story boosters landed at the same time, side by side. SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk owns the rocketing Tesla Roadster, which is aiming for a solar orbit reaching Mars.

Facebook’s latest ‘fixes’ at a glance C
EO Mark Zuckerberg has made fixing Facebook his personal challenge this year, and the company has already announced a slew of changes to this end. Among them, showing users more “meaningful” content from friends and family and emphasising local news. There will be more changes coming in the next weeks and months. For now, here are the highlights of what the company has announced so far:
AMAZON POSTS LARGEST PROFIT IN ITS HISTORY
A
mazon.com has reported a profit near $US2 billion ($A2.8 billion), the largest in its history, as the online retailer drew millions of new customers to its Prime fastshipping club for the holiday season and as changes to US tax law added to its bottom line. Shares rose more than 6 per cent in extended trading, after previously closing down 4 per cent on the Nasdaq. Seattle-based Amazon is using fast shipping, television shows exclusive to its website and forays into new technology, such as its voice-controlled Alexa devices, to attract highspending Prime members. Amazon said price cuts at Whole Foods Market, which it acquired for $US13.7 billion last year, are helping it win grocery sales, too. The world’s largest online retailer said net income more than doubled to $US1.86 billion, or $US3.75 per share in the fourth quarter ended December 31. Its profit received a provisional $US789 million boost from the US Republican tax bill passed in December. Analysts on average were expecting just $US1.85 per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. “This was another blow-out quarter for Amazon,” said GBH Insights analyst Daniel Ives. “The retail strength was
eye-popping as the company had a banner holiday season and looked to capture roughly 50 per cent of all e-commerce holiday season sales.” As expected, the period running from before the US Thanksgiving holiday through New Years was Amazon’s biggest-ever by revenue. Sales rose 38 per cent to $US60.5 billion in the quarter, beating estimates. The company’s fast delivery, like its two-hour Prime Now service, has helped win over holiday shoppers eager to avoid the crowds. Prime saw more than 4 million sign-ups in one week alone last quarter, and revenue from subscription fees grew 49 per cent to $3.2 billion, Amazon said. Some 60 million, or close to half of all US households, are estimated to have Prime subscriptions. The surprise star of the past quarter was Amazon’s voice aide Alexa, embedded in the company’s Echo speakers and Fire TV players, as well as some cars and house gadgets. Millions of Amazon customers ordered goods by voice with Alexa in the past year, said Brian Olsavsky, Amazon’s chief financial officer. “Our 2017 projections for Alexa were very optimistic, and we far exceeded them,” added Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and chief executive, in a statement.
“MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS” While the company has said before that it will emphasise personal connections over business pages and celebrities that people follow, a move intended to show people more “meaningful” posts goes further. The company said in mid-January that it will highlight posts, photos and videos people are more likely to interact with rather than passively consume. The changes come as the company faces criticism that social media can make people
feel depressed and isolated. Facebook says research shows this is especially true with “passive content,” such as watching videos without interacting or mindlessly scrolling through feeds.
“TRUSTED NEWS” Next, Facebook said it wants to help ensure that news people see comes from “trusted sources.” The company said it will prioritise news from sources people find trustworthy and informative. But to decide what users find trustworthy, Facebook turned to its users, asking whether they are familiar with and trust various sources of news. Critics saw this move as short-sighted - after all, it wasn’t long ago that users were falling for fake news on Facebook. LOCAL NEWS “Local news helps us understand the issues that matter in our communities and affect our lives,” Zuckerberg wrote in a recent Facebook post announcing the company’s move to show users more stories from their town or city.
JIM CARREY URGES FACEBOOK BOYCOTT
D
elete your account. That’s what Jim Carrey says Facebook users should do, as the actor looks to pull the mask off fake news. The star of Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber said on Twitter on Tuesday he’s dumping his Facebook stock and deleting his page because the social media giant profited from Russian interference in the US presidential election by spreading false news with Russian origins. He said the company was still not doing enough to stop it. The 56-year-old Carrey encouraged other investors and users to do the same. He ended his tweet with the hashtag “unfriendfacebook.” Facebook has not responded to Carrey’s tweet, but founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said stemming the flow of misinformation is among the company’s foremost goals.

UK EXPERTS URGE SMOKERS TO USE E-CIGS V
aping, or using e-cigarettes, poses only a fraction of the health risk of tobacco smoking and should be encouraged among smokers to reap substantial health benefits, British public health experts say. In a review of evidence on e-cigarettes commissioned by government-backed Public Health England, experts said that e-cigarettes could already be helping some 20,000 UK smokers a year quit tobacco - and possibly many more. The report said there was

“much public misunderstanding” about nicotine, with fewer than 10 per cent of adults understanding that the vast majority of the harms from smoking are not caused by nicotine. It said the evidence does not support concerns that e-cigarettes are a gateway into tobacco smoking among young people. “Our new review reinforces the finding that vaping is a fraction of the risk of smoking, at least 95 per cent less harmful, and of negligible risk to bystanders,” said John Newton, a professor and
director for health improvement at PHE. “It would be tragic if thousands of smokers who could quit with the help of an e-cigarette are being put off due to false fears about their safety.” The PHE report comes only weeks after the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine summarised data from hundreds of scientific studies and also concluded e-cigarettes are likely to be far less harmful than regular tobacco cigarettes.
PHE called on smokers and health authorities to act now on the evidence reviewed in these latest reports. It also called on Britain’s National Health Service to ensure e-cigarettes are available in hospital shops along with other nicotine replacement products such as gum and lozenges. The UK campaign group Action on Smoking and Health welcomed the report, saying it was part of a growing scientific consensus that e-cigarettes are much less harmful than tobacco.

Tex Perkins – the man in black is back ....continued from previous page
Australia, the band were on the road for a massive 18-months, racking up sell-out shows and taking the music to some of the best venues in the country. It’s no surprise the show is embraced so much by music- loving audiences – there are few artists within Australia who can translate the work of ‘The Man in Black’ and bring it to modern day like Tex Perkins. His reverence for Johnny Cash’s career is evident in the way he approaches every song. Johnny Cash made an indelible impact on the international music scene. From his rise to fame in 1954, he had a string of Top 10 hits, including Ring of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues and Don’t Take Your Guns To Town, to name a few. His #1 Billboard smash hit I Walk The Line made him a household name – and sat on the charts for 43 weeks! Fame and the Rock n Roll He has been inducted into Hall of Fame, demonstrating the Country Music Hall of the impact his music has had
across multiple genres. He passed away in 2003 but is still considered one of the
most influential musicians of all time, as his sales of over 50 million records will attest. Tex Perkins needs no introduction to Australian audiences, he is a legend within the Aussie music industry and is revered as one of the country’s rock n’ roll outlaws. It is said his affinity with Johnny Cash started in his earliest band and is an enthusiasm he hasn’t relinquished. After fronting The Cruel Sea, Beasts of Bourbon and touring with Tex, Don and Charlie and The Dark Horses, Tex Perkins has had an incredible and varied music career. The Man In Black – The Johnny Cash Story starring Tex Perkins and the Tennessee Four with Rachael Tidd arrives at Frankston Arts Centre on Wednesday May 9. Tickets are on sale now from the Box Office Ph 03 9784 1060 and for more information visit wwwfrankstonartscentre.com. au

RAW CHICKEN A PET PARALYSIS RISK
Dogs sniff out noxious weeds in Snowy Mtns
I
f you like to give your beloved pooch a chicken neck to gnaw on as a treat, you might want to reconsider. APN is a relatively rare but debilitating condition that initially causes weakness in the hind legs that can spread to the front legs, neck, head and face.

S
niffer dogs will soon be put to work to track down a noxious weed as part of the Kosciuszko National Park’s annual summer eradication program. Two specially trained Springer Spaniels will begin combing the NSW Snowy Mountains from next week through to March on the hunt for hawkweed, which the National Parks and Wildlife Service says hides under native vegetation and threatens native plants. Drone surveillance and helicopter surveys will also be used to help find the invasive weed. “A large part of the project is trying to find any new infestations - and this is where we are drawing on cutting-edge
surveillance technology and ‘old-school’ methods,” NPWS senior weeds officer Hillary Cherry said in a statement. Drones will be used to take photos that pick up on distinctive flashes of the bright orange-flowering hawkweed. Macquarie University is also working on the project trialling the use of multi and hyperspectral imagery. “This technology will identify reflectance of a unique ‘signature’ from the hawkweed leaves, so we’ll be able to spot them even if they are not flowering or if they are well camouflaged amongst native vegetation,” Ms Cherry said. The sniffer-dog resources and eight years’ worth of data collected by the NPWS is available to land managers to help prevent the spread of hawkweed.

Mitsubishi Motors revs up with all-new Eclipse Cross
N
ow officially on sale, the all-new Eclipse Cross, a coupe-like SUV - the first of a new generation of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation cars, joins the brand’s current lineup of SUVs: the ASX compact SUV and the Outlander and Outlander PHEV mid-size SUVs. Combining the spaciousness and versatility of a mid-size SUV, Eclipse Cross is capable and desirable thanks to sharp exterior design, engaging driving characteristics, appealing interior, advanced technologies and safety features. All versions of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be powered by an all-new direct injection turbocharged petrol engine developing 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque matched to an advanced new automatic transmission with Sport mode, manual override and paddle shifters. The new transmission benefits from the latest step logic technology to combine the packaging and running cost benefits of a CVT with the smoothness and responsiveness of a traditional automatic. The Eclipse Cross will
be available with two or four-wheel drive, the latter incorporating the latest generation of Mitsubishi’s Super All-wheel Control (S-AWC) system that offers a choice of three advanced drive modes – Auto, Snow and Gravel. The cockpit-style driving environment in the Eclipse Cross reinforces its focus on driving pleasure and the spaciousness of the cabin is further enhanced by slideand-recline adjustment for the 60:40 split rear seat on all models. To optimise loading capability, passenger comfort and to facilitate loads of various sizes and shapes, the rear seat back has eight reclining settings and the base has up to 200mm of travel. The Eclipse Cross protects its occupants, other drivers and pedestrians with a comprehensive array of active and passive safety features and systems which have ensured the vehicle attained an official 5-star ANCAP safety rating. “Mitsubishi has a long history in developing
innovative and exciting new models and the Eclipse Cross will build on our reputation as a leader in the SUV segment,” said Mitsubishi Australia’s CEO, John Signoriello. “We are excited to be able to showcase the new Eclipse Cross in one of Australia’s most scenic landscapes as we move into a strong 2018 with our expanded SUV range.” Model Range Three variants will be offered in LS and Exceed specification levels. Eclipse Cross will be competitively priced from $30,500 recommended retail for the LS 2WD model - very well equipped with direct injection turbocharged engine, 8-speed CVT automatic transmission, 18” alloy wheels, Smart key, 7” SDA, 7 airbags, FCM, AHB, LDW, ASTC, HSA. The high specification
Exceed adds dual-zone airconditioning, leather interior, power and heated front seats, LED headlamps with auto levelling, double panoramic sunroof, HUD, BSW, RCTA, MAM, UMS. 2WD Exceed is priced at $36,000 recommended retail. At $38,500 Mitsubishi’s flagship Eclipse Cross AWD Exceed comes standard with the same luxury appointments and comprehensive safety package as featured on the 2WD Exceed with the addition of Mitsubishi’s Super All Wheel Control S-AWC four-wheel drive system. Safety The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross features comprehensive passive safety architecture based on Mitsubishi’s RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) impact safety body and seven SRS airbag arrangement. This includes airbags fitted in the front driver and passenger, side, curtain and driver’s knee positions. Pedestrian protection measures have been developed through energy absorbing structures under the bonnet panel, cowl top, front bumper bar and headlamps. Eclipse Cross has a range of advanced active safety technologies which are fitted as standard across the range. By utilising multiple sensors to monitor the perimeter of the vehicle, Eclipse Cross can predict situations that may lead to an accident by assisting the driver in collision avoidance. As a result, the all-new Eclipse Cross has been awarded an ANCAP five-star safety rating.

Mazda’s Vision Coupe Named
‘Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year’
T
he Mazda Vision Coupe was named the “Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year” at the 33rd Festival Automobile International held in Paris, France. The award celebrates the freshest, most creative and most beautiful concept cars, as chosen by a jury of prominent designers working in fashion, architecture and other industries.
Mazda RX-Vision won the same honor in 2016, making this a double win for the two concept models that will guide the design of the next generation of Mazda cars. “Vision Coupe uses reflections to express a sense of vitality; the next step for KODO design,” said Ikuo Maeda, Mazda’s Managing Executive Officer in charge of Design and Brand Style. “This car embodies a
delicate Japanese aesthetic, and to be recognised here in the ‘City of Art’ two years after RX-VISION was awarded the same honor is very gratifying. We want to retain our identity as a Japanese brand as we continue making cars with global appeal.” Revealed in 2017, Vision Coupe is a design vision model for the next generation of Mazda cars. Featuring a simple
and flowing “one motion” form, it embodies a more mature interpretation of the KODO— Soul of Motion design language, which aims to breathe life into the car. Tempered with a Japanese aesthetic, the Vision Coupe takes cues from the Mazda Luce Rotary coupe and the Mazda R360, expressing elegant styling and projecting a premium feel.

Time off for WARNER before next T20 match U
nderperforming Australia T20 stand-in captain David Warner will be given a break to freshen up mentally before the next triangular series match in New Zealand. Coach Darren Lehmann told reporters Warner would appear at the Allan Border Medal count in Melbourne on Monday night before flying home to Sydney on Tuesday. The remainder of the T20 squad will head to New Zealand on Tuesday with Warner to join them for Friday’s clash against the Kiwis in Auckland. “It will just give him a couple of days at home really,” Lehmann said. “It’s always a challenge with the schedule as it is, but David is really keen to play as captain. “So we’ll give him a couple of days off and get him to New Zealand the day before the game.” Warner is deputising for skipper Steve Smith, who was rested after the one-day international series against England. Lehmann said the need for consistent messaging from
on-field leadership meant one of those two was required to play, but the long campaign has taken a toll on Warner’s output at the crease. After averaging just 14.60 during the five-match ODI series, Warner made scores of six, four and two runs to start the triangular T20 series. The opener is the only member of the victorious Ashes side to feature in all three formats of the game this Australian summer. “He’d obviously like some more runs but he’s been fantastic in the leadership role with the young guys,” Lehmann said. “He’s been training hard ... there’s no dramas at the moment. “He can only do so much work ... he’s been working so hard that it’s almost like (it would help) to just give him a couple of days away from the game. “Ricky Ponting has been doing some really good work with him, so we’d expect him to come out of that rut pretty quickly.” Despite Warner’s struggles, Australia booked a berth in the series final with a seven-wicket win over England at the MCG on Saturday night.
NBA TEAMS WORTH AT LEAST $1 BILLION EACH
E
very NBA team is worth at least $US1 billion each, according to Forbes' annual franchise valuations. For the first time in the NBA's history, all 30 teams are worth at least $1 billion. The New York Knicks lead the pack for the third straight year at $3.6 billion while the Los Angeles Lakers ($3.3 billion), Golden State Warriors ($3.1 billion), Chicago Bulls ($2.6 billion) and Boston Celtics ($2.5 billion) round out the top five. The lowest valued team is the New Orleans Pelicans at $1 billion. The average franchise is worth $1.652 billion, which is 22 per cent more than last year. The Forbes report cites the league's international growth prospects and its new television contracts with Time Warner's TNT and Walt Disney's ESPN among the reasons for financial success. The Warriors continue to climb up the value rankings, leaping past the Bulls for third this year. Given
Golden State's dominance the last several seasons, the team has been able to raise ticket prices by a significant amount without encountering problems selling seats. The Houston Rockets received a big bump up to $2.2 billion - the price the franchise was reportedly purchased for by billionaire Tilman Fertitta late last year. Other notable risers include the Sacramento Kings ($1.375 billion) and Detroit Pistons ($1.1 billion). Just behind them is the Milwaukee Bucks ($1.075 billion), who have Australians Thon Maker and Matthew Dellavedova in their roster. The Philadelphia 76ers, home to young Australian star Ben Simmons, had the biggest gain in value at 48 per cent to $1.18 billion. The Cleveland Cavaliers are 15th on the list at $1.325 billion and are the only team to lose money on an operating basis thanks to its steep payroll and luxury tax bills.

ames Magnussen feels certain he’s on track to recapture career-best form in time for this month’s Australian Commonwealth Games swimming trials. His return from a shoulder reconstruction has been a quiet affair, and the dual world champion is banking on his underdog status as he battles 100m freestyle favourites Cam McEvoy, Kyle Chalmers and James Roberts for one of three spots for the Gold Coast event. “They’re going to push me to my limits, and to be honest I’m probably the underdog going into this one. It’s something different for me, and it’s nice to be chasing other people rather than being the hunted,” he said.

KEY CROWS DEFENDER SLAPPED WITH AFLW BAN
A
delaide’s faltering AFLW title defence has suffered a fresh blow, with defender Angela Foley offered a one-match ban. Foley was charged by AFL match review officer Michael Christian with kneeing Melbourne star Daisy Pearce in the final quarter of the Crows’ 32-point loss at Casey Fields on Saturday. The incident was assessed as intentional conduct with medium impact to the body.
She can accept a one-match suspension, ruling her out of a must-win clash against the Western Bulldogs, or risk a two-game ban if she takes her case to the tribunal. The reigning premiers are winless after two rounds and host the unbeaten Bulldogs at Norwood Oval on Saturday. Fremantle’s Stacey Barr was the only other player to be offered a suspension following Christian’s review of the second round of the AFLW season.
CROFT TO STEP UP IN CRONK’S ABSENCE: SMITH
L
ife after Cooper Cronk has been “a little bit different” at Melbourne but Cameron Smith believes Brodie Croft has been the first to step up and show he can fill Melbourne’s vacant No.7 jersey. Storm skipper Smith claimed Croft was ahead of Ryley Jacks and Jahrome Hughes in the threeway race for the halfback role Cronk held at Melbourne for 14 NRL seasons before linking with Sydney Roosters this year. Smith admitted he was still getting used to 323-game veteran Cronk not being around at Melbourne after returning from his post-Rugby League World Cup break a fortnight ago. “It has been a little bit different without him (Cronk) but I have only been back two weeks,” Smith said. “I am used to having that familiar face of Cooper Cronk for the last 14 years, he’s not there now so we are doing our best to move on.” And Smith said Croft had hit the ground running in Cronk’s absence, tipping him to play halfback in Melbourne’s March 10 NRL season opener against the Bulldogs in Perth. Croft, 20, was kept in cotton wool for Melbourne’s opening trial - a 26-22 loss to Newcastle last weekend. But Smith believed Storm
fans would see plenty of Croft this season in Cronk’s absence, starting with Friday’s World Club Challenge clash with English champions Leeds. “Brodie Croft sat out against Newcastle but we have got a World Club Challenge coming up and that’s important so I am thinking he will get the nod for that match,” he said. “At the moment I would say Brodie is ahead just but if things weren’t to work out that way the others are ready to go.” Croft has the inside running after playing four NRL games last year. Jacks, 25, played 12 games mainly at five-eighth - last season after making his debut in the 2017 NRL season opener despite not being in the Storm’s original 25-man squad. Hughes, 23, arrived at the Storm last year and played four games after stints at Gold Coast Titans and North Queensland. Smith tipped Jacks and Hughes to keep Croft honest in the race to the halfback spot. “The other two boys are training quite well,” he said. “Ryley played a bit last year so we know Ryley is willing and able to take that position if needed. “And Jahrome has spent a bit of time in North Queensland under JT ( Johnathan Thurston) ... so he’s a good, young player.”
KEY KANGAROO SUFFERS AFL INJURY SETBACK
L
uckless North Melbourne forward Mason Wood is unlikely to take part in the pre-season AFL competition after suffering a broken thumb. Wood picked up the injury during last week’s intra-club match and will be unable to take part in full-contact training for about three weeks. “He doesn’t require surgery and the crack is very small and the injury, overall, a minor one,” North football boss
Cameron Joyce said. “We expect him to be available for round one as he’ll be able to complete all of the strength and conditioning components of the program. “He’s had an excellent preseason up until now and that should hold him in good stead.” The 24-year-old has played 26 games in four years at Arden Street and is yet to feature in an AFL seasonopener after a wretched run with injury.
