The Golden State Killer
No Australian link to Golden State Killer: DA
A
fter a 42-year investigation that included leads stretching as far away as Australia, US authorities have announced they have captured the rapist and serial killer dubbed the Golden State Killer and East Area Rapist. Joseph James DeAngelo Jr, a 72-year-old former police officer, was arrested in a dawn raid in California’s capital, Sacramento, on Wednesday. DeAngelo Jr’s alleged reign of terror began in 1976 and appears to have ended in 1986. Horrifying violent crimes took place across California from Oakland in the north to Orange County in the south. He allegedly broke into homes, threatened his victims with guns or knives and committed 51 rapes of women and 12 murders. The serial killer and rapist would wear a mask and during attacks where he confronted a husband and wife he sometimes tied the man up, put dishes on his back and raped the wife in another room. If the dishes fell he would know the husband was attempting to escape. The serial killer also allegedly would stay at the crime scene after committing the rape or
murder, go to the victim’s kitchen and make himself a sandwich or other snack before leaving. Authorities said they were unable to identify him until a major breakthrough just six days ago using DNA. Before that DeAngelo Jr’s name never came up in their four decade long investigation. “We all knew as part of this team that we were looking for a needle in a haystack,” Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert told reporters. “But we also all knew the needle was there.” Authorities were tight-lipped about giving away details, but they said they began a surveillance operation on DeAngelo Jr’s house in recent days, noted his movements and habits and collected a “discarded DNA sample”. After they allegedly matched his DNA, a team of authorities set a trap and on Wednesday morning when he came out of his Sacramento home they arrested him. There was renewed interest in the case when true-crime journalist Michelle McNamara’s book I’ll Be Gone in the Dark was released in February and topped

the New York Times bestseller list. Ms McNamara died in 2016, but her actor-comedian husband Patton Oswalt helped finish the book. Authorities said the book did not help them catch DeAngelo Jr, which led Oswalt to react on Twitter. “Also, the cops will NEVER and HAVE NEVER credited a writer or journalist for helping them solve a case. But every time they said #GoldenStateKiller they credited the work of #MichelleMcNamara and #IllBeGoneInTheDark,” he wrote. US authorities were so keen to catch the killer they investigated a theory he moved to Australia and committed rapes on young girls in Melbourne in the 1980s and 1990s. That rapist earned an Australian moniker - Mr Cruel. Victorian Police investigated the potential link between Mr Cruel and California’s Golden State Killer and ruled it out. US authorities at Wednesday’s press conference in Sacramento also dismissed a trans-Pacific connection. “We have no information the person was linked to Australia,” Ms Schubert said. DeAngelo, according to media reports, was fired from California’s Auburn Police Department in 1979 after he was arrested for stealing a can of dog repellent and a hammer from a drug store.

VIC BAR GETS STOLEN FOO FIGHTERS GIFT BACK Trump lookalike discovered in Spain
A
woman in Spain has found unexpected fame on social media after many found she bore a striking resemblance to US President Donald Trump. Thousands of responses flooded in last week after a journalist reporting on farming in northwestern Spain posted on Instagram a picture of Dolores Leis dressed in farm clothing with a hoe over her shoulder.
The 70-year-old has since been asked to comment on pressing US policy and international issues - though she has shown more concern for a moth plague threatening her potato crops. “I say that it must be because of the colour of the hair,” Leis told the La Voz de Galicia newspaper on Tuesday. She added she doesn’t use a mobile phone and has little interest in online chatter.
I
t’s times like these for a Melbourne bar owner who used social media to track down a stolen mirror gifted to him by American rockers the Foo Fighters, using the band’s lyrics. Cherry Bar owner James Young took to Facebook to reveal the mirror’s theft at the weekend, sharing footage of the alleged thieves. “We ask for the... Best Of You,” Mr Young said, referencing the band’s 2005 hit. “In...Times Like These. “Get our Foo Fighters’ mirror back and be.... My Hero.”
Mr Young gave the poachers a deadline to return the mirror or he would hand over their full contact details to police. It would be no mean feat, he suggested, given they were filmed on CCTV and used their credit card to buy a round of four pints. “We would implore these guys to...take a good hard look at themselves in the mirror, and then return the mirror,” Mr Young pleaded. An Adelaide man fessed up to the crime on Wednesday and said he would mail the mirror back. Mr Young said getting the mirror back was, “simply the best, the best, the best.” Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl gifted the mirror to the bar when the band toured the country in January and the band had since offered to replace it after its theft.

ans of the royals with a taste for beer will be able to celebrate Prince Harry and fiancee Meghan Markle’s wedding day with a special ale brewed in the town where the couple will get married this month. “Harry & Meghan’s Windsor Knot” has been brewed to give the traditional British pint a US twist in honour of the nuptials of the trans-Atlantic couple who will get married at Queen Elizabeth’s Windsor Castle home, west of London, on May 19. “With the authenticity of being brewed here in Windsor in the shadow of Windsor Castle, using local ingredients, it has got a fantastic appeal,” said Will Calvert, 60, one of the directors of Windsor and Eton brewery. According to the brewer, the pale ale is made from barley grown in Windsor’s royal farm, to represent Harry, and combined with hops from the west coast of America, reflecting Markle’s heritage. It is a sequel to the “Windsor Knot” beer the brewery first made in 2011 to mark the wedding of Prince William, Harry’s elder brother, to wife Kate. That brew was supposed to be on sale for only a couple of months but the brewery said it was so popular that it is still being made and sold today. The town has royal associations that go back centuries and Windsor, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, has been the family home of British kings and queens for almost 1000 years. Harry and his brother William both attended the nearby exclusive Eton College school which lies on the opposite bank of the River Thames.
HARRY, MEGHAN SET FOR INVICTUS RECEPTION
P
rince Harry and Meghan Markle will join Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at a London reception ahead of the Invictus Games in Sydney later this year. Harry and his bride-to-be will meet servicemen and women from both Britain and Australia, some of whom have previously competed in the international
sporting event. More than 500 competitors - made up of sick and injured military and veterans - from 18 nations are expected to compete at the Invictus Games in Sydney between October 20 and 27. It is expected Harry, who is patron of the Invictus Games Foundation which oversees the delivery of the tournament, will
travel to Australia for the event with Ms Markle, who will by then be his wife. When Toronto hosted the Paralympic-style event last year the former Suits star, who at the time was living and working in the city, attended the opening and closing ceremonies and visited competitors with Harry.

Korean nuclear site collapses: geologists ...cont from front page >>
The findings by the scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China may shed new light on North Korean President Kim Jong Un’s announcement that his country was ceasing its testing program. Nuclear explosions release enormous amounts of heat and energy, and the North’s largest test in September was believed early on to have rendered the site in northeastern North Korea unstable. The data in the latest Chinese study was collected following the most powerful of the North’s six nuclear device tests on September 3 that is believed to have triggered four earthquakes over the following weeks. The yield of the bomb was estimated at more than 100 kilotons of TNT, at least 10 times stronger than anything the North had tested previously. The bomb the United States dropped on Hiroshima in 1945 had a yield of about 15 kilotons. The University of Science and Technology of China paper said the first of those earthquakes that occurred eight-and-a-half minutes after the explosion was “an onsite collapse toward the nuclear test centre,” while those that followed were an “earthquake swarm” in similar locations. “In view of the research finding that the North Korea nuclear test site at Mantapsan has collapsed, it is necessary to continue to monitor any leakage of radioactive materials that may have been caused by the collapse,” the authors said in a summary dated Monday and viewed Wednesday on the university’s website. The study is peerreviewed and has been accepted for publication by the journal Geophysical

Australia to join Philippines-US war games
A
ustralian and Japanese troops are joining for the second time annual USPhilippine military exercises involving thousands of troops, as the two-week drills move towards becoming multilateral war games. The Philippines and the US have for more than 30 times held bilateral “Balikatan” (shoulder-to-shoulder) drills to test the readiness of their militaries to respond to threats that include natural disasters and militant extremist attacks. The United States embassy in Manila said in a statement on Thursday that Australia and Japan, two US allies countries with strategic partnerships with the Philippines, would again be included in the exercises at
multiple locations on the main island of Luzon, starting on May 7. Britain has also been invited to observe training for the mitigation of post-disaster suffering. They will focus on mutual defence, counter-terrorism, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief that can also “provide assistance in the event of crises that endanger public health and safety”. Soldiers from United States, Australia, Japan and the Philippines have already been renovating schools in four provinces north of Manila as well as providing medical and dental services in poor rural areas, the embassy said. Philippine military
Research Letters. The Chinese study makes sense and is based on well understood research, said Rowena Lohman, a seismologist at Cornell University who wasn’t part of the work. She said she believes there’s an international effort that monitors these tests for radiation. North Korea’s nuclear tests are of special concern to Beijing, since the test site near the town of Kilju is less than 100km from the border with China. North Korean nuclear tests
have caused seismic events in Chinese border towns and cities, forcing evacuations of schools and offices, sparking fears of wind-born radiation and leading to a backlash among some Chinese against their country’s unpredictable traditional ally. Chinese authorities have said they’ve detected no radiation risk from the tests. On Saturday, North Korea announced it will close its nuclear testing facility and suspend nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests - a move that comes ahead of a planned summit between US President Donald Trump and Kim.
spokeswoman Liezl Vidallon said the four countries would exchange and share information and conduct live-fire training. The exercises were scaled back last year in response to President Rodrigo Duterte’s disdain for the US-Philippine defence alliance. He has made no secret of his grudge against the United States and believes a US military presence of any kind in the Philippines puts his country at risk of being dragged into conflict, especially with China, as it beefs-up its maritime defences. The volatile leader has showered praise upon Russia and China and invited their warships to come to the Philippines for exercises too.

Drug smuggler gets Dutton, Entsch support A
merican marijuana smuggler and fugitive Peyton Eidson, frail after struggling with medical ailments exacerbated by stints in Australian and US jails, will stand before a judge in a San Francisco court later this week. US prosecutors want Judge Susan Ilston to sentence 74-yearold Eidson to eight years’ jail - a potential death sentence. Eidson’s Californian lawyer, Erick Guzman, will ask for a two-year sentence and has used letters from Australian Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Peter Dutton and federal Queensland Liberal MP Warren Entsch to back a call for leniency. Eidson’s story is so colourful it has the potential to be a Hollywood movie or TV miniseries and the sentencing memos filed by prosecutors and Guzman, usually dour, read like crime novels. “Eidson was an international drug smuggler in the ‘Miami Vice’ days of open-collared shirts and suitcases full of cash,” US federal prosecutors Frank Riebli and Randall Leonard wrote ahead of Friday’s sentencing. Guzman talked up how Eidson - despite being a major American marijuana smuggler who lived under a stolen identity in northern Queensland for almost 30 years - became a health spa owner and valued member of the community. “Amazing would not be overstating the life Mr Eidson led in Australia,” Guzman said. Eidson entered guilty pleas in January to conspiring to distribute marijuana and aggravated identity theft. Eidson became a major marijuana smuggler in the 1980s, using the Panamanian-flagged ocean-going freighter Christina M to ship large loads of the drug from Thailand to the US. On one trip, infiltrated by undercover agents, the Christina M was loaded with 18,000kg of marijuana and was brought near the southeast of Hawaii
where the drugs were placed on smaller boats for transport into unguarded harbours on the central California coast. Eidson and his co-conspirators were arrested in 1985 and despite his passport being seized, he went to Texas and successfully applied for a passport for himself and his wife Sonya using the aliases, Michael and Anita McGoldrick. In 1986 they fled to Australia with their daughter Maya and settled in the northern Queensland town of Julatten. “He and his wife started a wellness spa for travellers that offered lodging, dining, etc,” Guzman wrote. “Slowly but surely, the Eidsons - Peyton, his late wife Sonya, and their daughter Maya - became part of the community there.” Sonya died from cancer last year. Eidson repeatedly and fraudulently renewed his US passport under the McGoldrick alias at US consulates in Australia until 2011 when the State Department discovered the true Michael McGoldrick had died in the US. The Australian Federal Police arrested Eidson in 2011 for violations of Australian immigration laws, to the surprise of the Queensland community he had become such an important part of. He was sentenced to two years’ jail and, despite announcing his intent to self-deport and return to the US to face the drug smuggling charges, he fought his return until August last year when he was escorted on a plane to San Francisco by two Australian Federal Police officers. Eidson wants to move back to Australia where his daughter, granddaughter and friends are. In his letter to the US judge, Edison’s local federal member of parliament and Liberal MP Warren Entsch described his constituent as a “highly respected and valuable member of our local community”. The MP wrote he “spent

considerable time pleading with” Dutton to personally intervene in Eidson’s deportation from Australia. “In effect, the Minister made a commitment that should Peyton be prepared to leave Australia of his own volition and resolve outstanding matters in the United States and secure a United States passport to become a legitimate documented person then he would be able to return immediately to Australia under any visa and the Minister would personally approve that visa and waiver any time frames that would normally be required,” Entsch wrote to Judge Ilston. Dutton, in a letter to Entsch filed in the US court, wrote that he believed “it is in the national interest that Mr Eidson regularise his status as a non-citizen residing in Australia” and once Eidson resolved “any outstanding matters” in the US he may apply for a visa to travel to Australia. “I have asked that the application be referred to me for consideration,” Dutton wrote. “Once Mr Eidson is back onshore, my powers to intervene will be enlivened and I undertake to grant Mr Eidson a permanent visa, subject to Mr Eidson having been of good character in the intervening time.”

annabis use will not be legalised in Western Australia anytime soon after the state’s health minister dismissed calls from the Australian Greens for reform. Under the proposed reforms cannabis would be redefined as a legal substance with licences issued for its production and sale. “There’s no question the current policy has failed abysmally,” Mr Palmer told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday. Australian Greens leader Richard Di Natale wants a national agency established to issue production and sale licences and oversee regulations. Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt on Tuesday rejected the push, stating marijuana was a “gateway drug” which could lead users to take up other, harder, drugs such as heroin or ice. But Mr Palmer says that’s already happening now. He acknowledged that wouldn’t change under the Greens’
proposal but argues weed would be better regulated. “There will always be some people for who one drug is not enough and will transition to another but this is much more likely to be controlled,” he said. “I don’t see it in any sense being worse than it is now.” Under the Greens’ plan, the plain-packaged cannabis would clearly identify the ingredients to ensure users knew what they were buying. “When you buy from the black market you have no idea what you’re getting and it leads to a higher likelihood that people are going to have cravings for stronger drugs,” the ex-AFP boss said speaking alongside Senator Di Natale. “I’d love to see a situation where nobody takes drugs but the reality is this is what’s occurring in a world of prohibition and it’s not likely to stop.” The Greens leader says legalising cannabis would raise hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, helping fund treatment, education and other harmreduction programs.
CANNABIS CROWD FEELS THE LOVE FOR GREENS
A
ustralian Greens leader Richard Di Natale has found some support in the heart of Melbourne for his party’s campaign to legalise cannabis. Amid a haze of smoke in a city park on Friday, when attendees at a 420 rally freely dragged on bongs and joints, the senator and former drug and alcohol doctor took to the stage. “The people who love the fact that cannabis is illegal are people who make a hell of a lot of money of it and it’s people like you who suffer the consequences,” he told the relaxed crowd. The minor party on Monday went public with its planned policy to decriminalise marijuana

for recreational use, in a move that was swiftly rejected by the federal government. The Greens argue there are social and financial benefits for Australia becoming a “more decent and compassionate country” by legalising cannabis and will take the policy to the next federal election. “We are seeing an increase in the number of arrests associated with cannabis - nearly 80,000 people arrested last year, for doing what? For smoking a plant,” Senator Di Natale continued. Among Friday’s crowd were people holding signs showing the Australian flag and the slogan “no bong, no belong”.

harks make WA an “environmentally wild place” compared to other parts of the world, but the state government is doing all it can to mitigate the risk of an attack, the premier says. Alejandro Travaglini, 37, needed surgery to both legs after he was mauled at Cobblestones beach in Gracetown last Monday, while Jason Longgrass, 41, was bitten several hours later at nearby Lefthanders break, which had been closed. WA Premier Mark McGowan said the state government was doing all it could to mitigate the shark risk, but there was also a degree of personal responsibility. “We have helicopter patrols, we’ve put in place more swimming enclosures, we’ve got a subsidy program for people to use shark deterrent devices whether they’re surfers or divers, we’ve got an enhanced monitoring program, we put new receivers in the ocean,” he told reporters on Sunday. “All of those things are being done, as well as a range of scientific programs. “But when you go in the ocean, you run a very, very, very small risk and I think most people understand that that is the case.” Another deterrent device, which fits on a surfboard, is being tested and the premier

Victoria has provided close to $1 million over the past decade, with $150,000 going toward current work, including as analysis of possum faeces and testing of mosquitoes, which have been shown to contain the bacteria. The state’s health department and researchers have also applied for a grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council and will contribute $250,000 if it is successful. “Sometimes it’s seen as a Victorian issue, but it’s also happened in the Daintree,” Dr Sutton said, urging the council to consider the application. “The things we can develop here in Victoria out of research have implications more broadly.” Most cases are occurring on the Mornington and Bellarine peninsulas, but there is a risk the “nasty disease” could spread to other coastal areas, possibly through possum faeces, Dr Sutton said. The infection seems to happen more in warmer months and bites or trauma to the skin may play a role. It can take anywhere from four to six months after exposure for a person to display symptoms, which may start as a red, raised area. The ulcer can be treated with antibiotics, but patients end up paying about $14,000 each, because the drugs are not covered by the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and many sufferers also require plastic surgery.

IN THE LUCKY COUNTRY?
Aussie optimism dimmer in 10 years’ time “...COSTS HAVE FAR OUTPACED WAGE GROWTH OVER THE PAST DECADE”
M
any Australians are pessimistic about how liveable the country will be in 10 years’ time, with rising living and housing costs the leading concerns identified in a new survey. A poll by National Australia Bank of 2,000 Australian adults shows that while nine in 10 adults believe the country is a great place to live now, just 55 per cent think it will still be that way in 2028. The results of the poll, released recently, show the costs of living and housing to be among the main causes of concern for the future, led by overwhelmingly bleak reactions
AUSTRALIA NOW AND IN THE FUTURE - KEY FINDINGS: • 88 per cent say Australia a great place to live in 2018 while six per cent say it isn’t • 55 per cent say Australia be a better place to live in 2028 • Open spaces, people and lifestyle, and safety are rated as the top features that make Australia a great place to live • Entertainment, public transport, social inclusion and telecommunications are the only things expected to improve by 2028 • Living costs, housing and safety are the biggest features expected to deteriorate by 2028
from Tasmanians and those over the age of 50. Worries about future costs mirror concerns expressed over the past decade, with a recent Victorian Council of Social Services report finding housing and energy costs have far outpaced wage growth over the past decade. The NAB survey also found pessimists outnumber optimists on most subjects, including immigration, social welfare and jobs. Respondents were polled on 27 issues but only delivered a net positive result about the outlook for four: entertainment, public transport, social inclusion and telecommunications. And even then, far more were cynical about the future of phone and internet connections than they were at same time last year. Anxiety about power and water prices in 2028 also increased. NAB Group Chief Economist Alan Oster said the drop in the outlook for telecommunications and utilities perhaps reflected concerns about the rollout of the NBN and the current spike in energy prices. On the positive side, respondents listed open spaces, the people and lifestyle as the main factors making Australia a great place to live at present. Source: NAB Life In The Lucky Country report
DESIGNER OF AUSTRALIA’S COINS DIES AGED 86
T
he designer of Australia’s coins, Stuart Devlin, has died, aged 86. The Royal Australian Mint announced on Thursday the Geelong-born goldsmith, silversmith and artist died peacefully a week ago. Devlin won a competition to design Australia’s decimal currency in 1964, which was released in 1966, giving prominence to the nation’s iconic wildlife. He designed every Australian coin in circulation, with the exception of the $2 which was created by Horst Hahne. At 13, Devlin began studying at Geelong’s Gordon Institute of Technology, before going on to study gold and silversmithing at the Prahran Institute of Art in Melbourne. He was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London and the Harkness Fellowship, which took him to New York’s Columbia University, before returning to Australia in 1962. Two years later, he won the competition to design Australia’s first decimal coins.
Devlin went on to design coins for another 36 countries, including the UK and Singapore. Royal Australian Mint chief executive Ross MacDiarmid said many of Devlin’s original plasters and sketches are in the national coin collection, with an exhibition honouring his work last year. “The Mint pays tribute to Stuart Devlin AO CMG, a passionate and prolific designer, goldsmith and silversmith, whose legacy is enduring,” Mr MacDiarmid said in a statement. Devlin also designed medals, jewellery, decorative table wear, furniture, interiors and architecture.

Lawsuit against Facebook over face tagging
A
US federal judge has ruled that Facebook must face a class action lawsuit alleging that the social network unlawfully used a facial recognition process on photos without user permission. The ruling adds to the privacy woes that have been mounting against Facebook for weeks, since it was disclosed that the personal information of millions of users was harvested by the political consultancy Cambridge Analytica. US District Judge James Donato ruled in San Francisco federal court that a class action was the most efficient way to resolve the dispute over facial templates. Facebook said it was reviewing the ruling. “We continue to believe the case has no merit and will defend ourselves vigorously,” the company said in a statement.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs could not immediately be reached for comment. Facebook users sued in 2015, alleging violations of an Illinois state law about the privacy of biometric information. The class will consist of Facebook users in Illinois for whom Facebook created and stored facial recognition algorithms after June 7, 2011, Donato ruled. That is the date when Facebook launched “Tag Suggestions,” a feature that suggests people to tag after a Facebook user uploads a photo. In the US court system, certification of a class is typically a major hurdle that plaintiffs in proposed class actions need to overcome before reaching a possible settlement or trial. an Jose Costa Rican criminals are training cats to smuggle mobile phones into prisons. This week, guards of the large La Reforma prison in north-eastern Alajuela province found a small cat carrying a bag containing a mobile phone, a charger, a spare battery and headphones, the daily La Nacion reported on Tuesday. The bag had been tied to the animal’s back. Nearly a month ago, another cat was found carrying two mobile phones and two batteries. Inmates use the mobile phones to organise criminal activities outside

safeguards for users as it complies with new European rules designed to make it easier for consumers to give and withdraw consent for the use of their data. Facial recognition technology has been used in most parts of the world for six years, but was initially removed in the EU in 2012 following protests from regulators and privacy advocates. It will now be offered as an opt-in feature in Europe ahead of the rollout of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), new EU data privacy laws which give users more control over how their information is used. Facebook’s face recognition technology uses software that create a “template” of a user’s face based on other images they are tagged in, which is then used to make tagging suggestions in other photos.
The tool is one of several measures users will be asked to manage as part of new privacy features - as well as whether they want adverts shown to them based on data from Facebook partners and if they want political, religious and relationship information on their profile shared. Users will have the opportunity to select an “accept and continue” option to automatically agree to Facebook’s settings - including turning on face recognition - or select a “manage data setting” option where they can confirm they would like the feature turned off. The move comes at a tense time for the company, which is already at the centre of a data privacy scandal linked to political research firm Cambridge Analytica.

New polymer to mop up oil spills

new absorbent polymer could soon be used to more effectively mop up oil spills to help protect the marine environment. Flinders University has led research into the polymer, which is made from waste cooking oil and sulphur and acts like a sponge to remove crude oil and diesel from seawater. The polymer can also be “squeezed” to recover the oil for re-use, scientists say. Research leader Justin Chalker says using waste sulphur, a by-product of the petroleum industry, has the added benefit of reducing global stockpiles. “This is a new class of oil sorbents that is low-cost, scalable, and enables the efficient removal and recovery of oil from water,” Dr Chalker said.

he national broadband network is still not meeting consumer expectations with complaints continuing to rise as more homes and businesses connect to the network, the industry ombudsman says. More than a quarter of the 84,914 complaints by residential and business customers to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman were about services delivered over the NBN. The majority of NBN complaints made in the six months to December 31 were in regards to service quality, with customers unsatisfied by provider responses, while other issues were around connection delays. NBN Co says of the 22,827 complaints to the ombudsman about retail services delivered over the network, it received only 1052 complaints to resolve - a decline of 16 per cent compared to the same corresponding period. Ombudsman Judi Jones said
while the increase in NBN complaints is not surprising given the growing number of connections to the network, the rise is still concerning and indicates that the service is still not meeting expectations. “It is really important that the retailer listens and puts themselves in the consumer’s shoes and looks at it from the consumer’s perspective, figures out what to do and then does what they say they are going to do,” Ms Jones told AAP. Cyber Security Minister Angus Taylor said despite the significant number of organisations affected, there was no indication Australian information had been compromised. “Commercially available routers were used as a point of entry, demonstrating that every connected device is vulnerable to malicious activity,” Mr Taylor said. “This attempt by Russia is a sharp reminder that Australian businesses and individuals are constantly targeted by malicious
state and non-state actors, and we must maintain rigorous cyber security practices.” Mr Taylor, who is in the United States meeting government officials to discuss cyber security, said it was crucial Canberra worked with Washington to build defences against attacks. Neither minister went as far as US and UK authorities who said the attack was the work of “Russian state-sponsored cyber actors”. The Kremlin has previously denied any involvement in directing cyber attacks. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said Australia needed to redouble efforts to make sure government institutions and big and small businesses were protected from the scourge of hacking. “We cannot take our cyber security for granted,” he told reporters in Cairns.

Germany pushes for electric car technology
G
ermany’s Economy Minister Peter Altmaier says the country’s automotive industry must invest heavily in electric car technology and develop battery production facilities in Europe to keep up with global competitors. Altmaier told Germany’s masscirculation Bild newspaper that the carmakers need to invest high “two-digit billion amounts” in electric car technology, saying he did not understand why the firms had hesitated for so long. Investments were also needed in battery production, given expected demand for many millions of electric batteries that could help firms earn good money. “Otherwise we’ll have to accept that a large part of the added
value will be produced in Asia or the United States, instead of here with us,” he said. The German car industry, which accounts for some 800,000 jobs in Europe’s biggest economy, is struggling with a global backlash against diesel cars after Volkswagen admitted in 2015 that it had cheated US exhaust tests. To help reduce pollution levels and avoid a total ban on diesel vehicles, VW, Daimler and others have stepped up development of electric cars. The new German coalition government plans to ease the tax burden on drivers of electric vehicles, provide at least an additional 100,000 charge points across the country and subsidise car-sharing to push a shift to greener transportation.
There are also plans to provide funding for research into autonomous driving technology and support the establishment of battery cell production in Germany. Altmaier said German carmakers needed to develop a model that had at least the range of a Tesla but costs less, and should work on developing an information technology platform for self-driving cars that was the best in the world. “The first safe self-driving cars must operate with German technology,” he said. The conservative minister said it was imperative to secure the hundreds of thousands of jobs now supporting the car and supplier industries.
Airlines back global registry for drones
T
he world’s airlines are backing the development of a United Nations-led global registry for drones, as a rise in near collisions by unmanned aircraft and commercial jets fuels safety concerns. The International Air Transport Association backs efforts by the United Nations’ aviation agency to develop such a registry, which could also help track the number of incidents involving drones and jets, says Rob Eagles, IATA’s director of air traffic management infrastructure. IATA would consider collaborating with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to use the registry for data analysis to improve safety. ICAO is developing the registry as part of broader efforts to come up with common rules for flying and tracking unmanned aircraft. Airlines and airport operators are looking to drone registries, geo-fencing technology and stiffer penalties for operating drones near airports. They hope these steps will ensure flying remains safe as hobbyists and companies like Amazon.com use more drones. In Britain, the number of near misses between drones and aircraft more than tripled between 2015 and 2017, with 92 incidents recorded last year, according to the UK Airprox Board. Air New Zealand Ltd said last month a flight from Tokyo with 278 passengers and crew on board encountered a drone estimated to be just five metres away from the Boeing 777-200 jet during its descent into Auckland. A single registry would create a one-stop-shop that would allow law enforcement to remotely identify and track unmanned aircraft, along with their operator and owner. “The intention at present is to merge this activity into the ICAO registry for manned aircraft, so that the sector has a single consolidated registry network,” said ICAO spokesman Anthony Philbin by email. The manned aircraft registry is operated by Aviareto, a joint venture between Switzerlandbased aviation technology group SITA and the Irish government.

omino’s, which has been bringing pizzas to doorsteps for more than half a century, will now deliver to the great outdoors. The pizza chain says its drivers can meet customers at US beaches, parks and landmarks to hand over pizza, cheesy bread and other food on its menu. In all, Domino’s said it will deliver to 150,000 outdoor locations including under the Gateway Arch in St. Louis; by the Las Vegas welcome sign; or next to a statue of soul singer James Brown in Augusta, Georgia. The locations show up in the company’s app or website as “Domino’s Hotspots.” Delivery is a key part of the company’s business, and it has been aggressive in making it easy to order through tweets, text messages and Amazon’s voiceactivated Echo.
But competition has grown from other fast-food chains that are offering more delivery options. McDonald’s has a deal with online service UberEats, and the parent company of KFC and Taco Bell recently teamed up with Grubhub to expand delivery. Domino’s says it tested the service last autumn in Miami, where customers ordered outside hotels and the zoo. Dennis Maloney, the company’s chief digital officer, wouldn’t say how many deliveries were made during the test, but said it was enough to decide to roll it out nationwide. Franchisees chose the hotspots, including local dog parks and airports. Drivers will pull up to the curb to meet customers, Domino’s said, and people can tell the app what they’re wearing so they’re easier to spot.

The prolific director and his Amblin Entertainment are teaming with Warner Bros to produce action-adventure “Blackhawk,” with the intention of Spielberg directing. Based on the classic comic-book property, the project will mark the filmmaker’s first feature centred on characters from the DC universe. Spielberg most recently directed “Ready Player One” for Warner Bros, which has so far grossed $US476 million worldwide following its release late last month. “We can’t wait to see what new ground he will break in introducing ‘Blackhawk’ to movie audiences worldwide,” said Toby Emmerich, chairman, Warner Bros Pictures Group. The screenplay for “Blackhawk” is being written by David Koepp, who has collaborated with Spielberg as a screenwriter on the blockbusters “Jurassic Park,” “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds,” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” Spielberg will produce the film with Kristie Macosko Krieger under the Amblin Entertainment banner, while Sue Kroll will executive produce under her Kroll & Co. In the comics, Blackhawk was the leader of the Blackhawk Squadron, an elite group of pilots that fought in World War II. Spielberg is currently prepping the fifth Indiana Jones movie, which will be his next project. It’s currently unknown when exactly Spielberg will shoot “Blackhawk,” but the studio now has the time to fully develop the project before handing it over to Spielberg.

STEVE IRWIN TO RECEIVE HOLLYWOOD STAR S
teve “The Crocodile Hunter” Irwin will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame more than a decade after his shock death. The ceremony will take place on Hollywood Boulevard on Thursday (Friday 4.30am AEST) and Irwin’s wife Terri, daughter Bindi and son Bob are expected to attend. Irwin’s best mate and director of Australia Zoo and Wildlife Warriors, Wes Mannion, will coemcee the ceremony. Irwin was hugely popular in the US, with his Crocodile Hunter shows airing multiple times a day on the Animal Planet cable TV channel. Irwin, 44, died on September 4, 2006, while filming on the Great Barrier Reef near Port Douglas when a stingray struck him with a barb to the heart. On May 5 in Beverly Hills wildlife warriors from around the world will attend the Steve Irwin Gala Dinner to celebrate his life and legacy.
‘TULLY’ FILM CAST, CREW TALK PARENTING P
eople are quick to paint parenthood as a paradise, ‘Tully’ director Jason Reitman says. But fewer people discuss the utter fear and exhaustion that accompany caring for living, breathing children. “It’s scary to be a first-time parent,” Reitman said from the red carpet of the film’s Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday. “You’re not supposed to talk about that. It’s supposed to be a blessing, but the truth is, you always feel like you didn’t get the guidebook. You never know if you’re doing the right thing.” ‘Tully’ follows Charlize Theron’s Marlo, a mother of three who struggles to stay afloat while catering to her young children, until Mackenzie Davis swoops in to save the day as Marlo’s new nanny. For Theron, who had just welcomed her second child before production began, the script laden with motherly misadventures and woes was all too real. “I think for all of us, it just
felt very familiar,” Theron told Reuters. “It feels like something we all were either in or had just experienced, and we could really emotionally tap into that. ... I want to be honest and raw enough to say how messy it is to raise kids.” The collaborative process Theron underwent with Reitman and writer Diablo Cody helped the actress understand the universal plight of parents. “Making this film has made me not feel alone,” Theron said. “Just even with sharing the script -- that process where I read the script, and I knew Diablo wrote this because she felt it -- like, okay at least there’s one other person.” ‘Tully’ marks the third film collaboration between Cody and Reitman. Their first project together was ‘Juno’, a movie about a young soon-to-be mother that Cody wrote prior to her first pregnancy. ‘Tully’ will be released in Australia on May 10.

MIKE MYERS LEADS TRIBUTES TO VERNE TROYER M
ike Myers has led tributes to his Austin Powers co-star Verne Troyer, who has died aged 49. The 81cm tall US actor known for playing Mini-Me in the spoof spy movies died on Friday, according to a statement on his social media accounts. Troyer had openly struggled with alcoholism and had been admitted to hospital in Los Angeles earlier this month. His cause of death is not yet clear. “Verne was the consummate professional and a beacon of positivity for those of us who had the honour of working with him,” said Myers, co-creator and star of the Austin Powers films. “It is a sad day, but I hope he is in a better place. He will be greatly missed.” The statement announcing the US actor’s death did not state a cause, but mentioned depression and suicide and described the actor as a “fighter” who was unable to overcome his latest battle. “Verne was an extremely caring individual. He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh,” it read. “Verne was
also a fighter when it came to his own battles. Over the years he’s struggled and won, struggled and won, struggled and fought some more, but unfortunately this time was too much. “Depression and suicide are very serious issues. You never know what kind of battle someone is going through inside. Be kind to one another. And always know, it’s never too late to reach out to someone for help.” Troyer became a celebrity and pop-culture phenomenon after starring alongside Mike Myers as Mini-Me, the clone and sidekick of villain Dr Evil, in two of the three Austin Powers films. He appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2009, and was recently baptised while surrounded by family, the message added. The actor’s credits also include Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone and Men In Black. The statement added that well-wishers should donate to the Starkey Hearing Foundation and Best Buddies instead of giving flowers. American glamour model Carmen Electra shared a snap
of the two of them on Instagram in which she can be seen holding Troyer in her arms. The Baywatch actress simply posted “R.I.P Verne Troyer” along with the image. West Wing star Marlee Matlin took to Twitter in the wake of the news, describing him as having a “lovely smile with a caring
and big heart”. Singer Vanilla Ice and American Pie actress Shannon Elizabeth also posted images of themselves with Troyer following the news of his death. Australian readers seeking support and information about depression can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.
KANYE RAPS ABOUT TRUMP, OBAMA ON NEW TRACK K
anye West has released a politicallycharged new song, in which he raps about Donald Trump and Barack Obama. Ye VS. The People, his first new music since 2016's Life Of Pablo, was aired on Los Angeles hip-hop station Power 106 FM on Friday night. It came shortly after West earned praise from the US president, and criticism from many others, for his signs of
support on Twitter. In the track, West says: "I know Obama was heaven-sent but ever since Trump won, it proved that I could be president." The US rapper goes on to add: "See that's the problem with this damn nation, all blacks gotta be Democrats, man we ain't even made it off the plantation." West, in the song featuring rapper T.I., also seems to address his hat expressing Mr Trump's isolationist slogan, Make America Great Again.

I enjoy more mature activities, a good game of backgammon and watching reruns of Mash. I’m an active member of The Men’s Shed and like to make relish from my home grown tomatoes. But don’t worry I also engage in doggo pastimes too, give me a hardy squeaky toy and I’m in heaven.

JOSHUA OFFERED
$US50M FOR WILDER SHOWDOWN
A
nthony Joshua has been offered a guaranteed purse of $US50 million ($A70 million) by Deontay Wilder’s team in order to arrange a muchanticipated world heavyweight unification title showdown. Joshua has been given 24 hours to sign the contract, labelled “a wonderful PR move” by his promoter Eddie Hearn, and the Watford fighter wasted little time in responding to his rival, saying: “Let’s roll.” The pair hold all four major world titles between them and speculation of a bout has intensified since Joshua defeated New Zealander Joseph Parker last month to unify the WBA, IBF and WBO titles. WBC champion Deontay Wilder was offered a flat fee of $US12.5 million ($A17.5 million) by Hearn
recently but the American’s handlers have made a counter proposal. Wilder hinted he was ready to give in to Joshua’s demands when he said in a video posted on his social media channels: “I got something special for you. And by the way, all the money’s in the bag so I expect you to be a man of your word.” The video then cuts to a previous interview with Joshua, who said: “I’ll take 50 million up front. If that’s the case, Wilder’s team bring me 50 million up front and we’ll take the fight.” Wilder then added: “I’ll see you soon then.” The 32-year-old did not have to wait long for an answer from Joshua, who replied on Instagram underneath his fellow unbeaten fighter’s video.
Woods to play next two events on PGA Tour T
iger Woods announced on Thursday that he will play the next two events on the PGA Tour -- the Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina and the Players Championship in Florida. The Players Championship entry is hardly a surprise, given that he has twice won the tour’s flagship event, which is widely considered the most prestigious outside the four majors. “Break over. Time to get back to work,” Woods wrote on Twitter. The 14-times major champion will have had three weeks off after a disappointing US Masters, where he teed up amid massive media hype and perhaps
unrealistic expectations. The 42-year-old was one of the favourites after contending for victory at his previous two starts in Florida, but never quite fired on all cylinders and finished equal 32nd. He has played six times this year on his comeback after a successful spinal fusion operation last April, with a tie for second at the Valspar Championship his best result. Woods last competed at the Wells Fargo in 2012, when he missed the cut. He won the event in 2007. He won the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in 2001 and 2013.

TEAM USA STARS SET TO COME TO AUSTRALIA A
ndrew Bogut believes two games between Team USA and the Boomers will draw the biggest names in basketball to Australia and lead to growth in the NBL. The Australian side is set to take on the Americans in Melbourne in 2019 in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics. Bogut told SEN Breakfast on Thursday players in the US were excited about the trip down under. “From what I’ve heard pretty much everyone has put their hands up barring injury,” Bogut said.
The NBA star-turned Sydney King said the games would be a good curtain raiser for the Australian side leading into the World Cup in China and the 2020 Olympics. “Team USA last played in Australia in 2002 ... (We) haven’t really had a quality national team come out here in decades,” he said. Bogut said the big tournaments coupled with the NBL’s growth and the “increased takeover of Aussies in the NBA” would be “massive” for Australian basketball. “To have that
TENNIS HAS SIGNIFICANT ‘INTEGRITY ISSUES’ T
ennis provides a “fertile breeding ground” for breaches of integrity and is engulfed in a “tsunami” of betting-related corruption at some lower levels of the sport due to online gambling, according to an independent review. The Independent Review of Integrity in Tennis was set up in February 2016 after allegations by the BBC and Buzzfeed that leading players, including grandslam winners, were involved in suspected match-fixing and that evidence had been suppressed. More than two years later, the review panel - in publishing its interim report on Wednesday claimed tennis faced a “serious integrity problem”, particularly at the lower levels of the sport where players often struggled to break even, and especially on the men’s circuits. The panel also found “evidence of some issues” at grand slams and Tour events, although it did not uncover evidence of a widespread problem at those higher levels. However, it did claim ‘tanking’
- players seemingly giving up during matches - which has been a feature at some high-profile tournaments, has been too often tolerated by tennis authorities. The review panel did not find evidence of a cover-up by the Tennis Integrity Unit or governing bodies, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). However, some of the actions taken by the ITF and ATP were seen to be “inappropriate or ineffective”. Among its recommendations are the restructuring of the professional game and a significant reduction in tournaments deemed ‘professional’, but where players may actually lose money due to the cost of competing, thus making them vulnerable to breaches of integrity. The panel also recommended discontinuing the sale of official live scoring data at lower-level tennis to betting companies, and eliminating betting sponsorship in the sport.
done by basketball Australia and the NBL is absolutely huge and we can hopefully build that into a TV deal for the NBL,” he said.

by eliminating the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 7 of their first-round series. “I really don’t care either, when I’m competing against them.” The franchises have met 19 times in the playoffs (though only three times in the past 33 years), with Boston holding a 12-7 edge. Two years after winning just 10 games, the rebuilding “Process” is paying off for the 76ers. Simmons, the No. 1 overall pick in 2016 before missing all of last season, averaged 18.2 points and 10.6 rebounds against the Heat - both improvements over his regularseason numbers. Embiid, the third overall pick in 2014, returned after missing the first two games of the playoffs and averaged 18.7 points and 10.3 rebounds in three wins over Miami. “They’re super-talented,” Celtics coach Brad Stevens said. “That’s what happens when you’re in the NBA playoffs. It’s fun.”
The Celtics held Milwaukee’s star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo to zero fast break points in Game 7 of their first-round series. They know that transition defence will also be a key against Philadelphia, which was one of the best in the NBA on the break. “In transition, they just make you pay,” Celtics centre Al Horford said. “They just present a whole different challenge.” Stevens said guard Jaylen Brown still had some soreness from a hamstring injury he sustained in Game 7 and is doubtful for Game 1 against the Sixers. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 draft, Brown averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game this season. He said on Saturday he would be back. “Whatever it takes, I wouldn’t miss this series for the world,” Brown said. The Celtics are already without stars Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving, as well as Daniel Theis.

MESSI TREBLE SEALS LA LIGA TITLE FOR BARCA L
ionel Messi scored a hat-trick as Barcelona clinched a 25th Spanish La Liga title with a 4-2 victory at Deportivo La Coruna. Barca threw away a two-goal lead in a thrilling game before Messi struck twice late on to confirm Depor’s relegation. Atletico Madrid tightened their grip on second place by winning 1-0 at Alaves, with a penalty from Kevin Gameiro. Valencia’s march towards Champions League qualification was delayed after they were held to a goalless draw at home to Eibar. Barca only needed a draw to seal their seventh title in the past 10 years and they made a perfect start when record signing Philippe Coutinho scored with a stylish finish before Messi doubled the lead by volleying home a Luis Suarez cross. Deportivo deservedly pulled one back through Lucas Perez five minutes before halftime and Turkish midfielder Emre Colak equalised in the 68th minute. Clarence Seedorf’s side needed victory to survive in the top flight for another week and they came close to finding a third goal and becoming the first team to beat Barca in the league this season. But the runaway leaders kept counter-attacking and it was top scorer Messi who restored their lead, striking from close range in the 82nd minute after being teed up by Suarez. Messi claimed his 32nd league goal of the season with the help
of another pass from Suarez to become the first player to score 30 goals or more in seven La Liga seasons. “I’m very happy, we feel so much joy after winning this league,” the Argentine told Barcelona’s television channel. “We know how complicated it is to win the league, which is why we have to cherish this and celebrate it as we should with all our fans. “It was a very special league win because we didn’t lose a game. We had some tough moments and we overcame them without losing and that’s incredible.” Departing Barca great Andres Iniesta came on as a late substitute and was a given a huge roar by the generous Deportivo crowd. “We have won it with a very big margin and in the end we were the best in the league,” Barca coach Ernesto Valverde told reporters. Valverde’s unbeaten side have 86 points from 34 games, with Atletico 11 points adrift and thirdplaced Real Madrid on 71 points. Atletico earned a first away league win in more than two months thanks to a late penalty converted by French forward Gameiro after Fernando Torres had spurned an earlier spot-kick against Alaves. Atletico forward Angel Correa was sent off in stoppage-time after two bookings. Fourth-placed Valencia hosted Eibar but they could only draw a blank against the Basques.

BOOT EXCITE NFL S
despite the giant former South eattle Seahawks head Sydney junior rugby league coach Pete Carroll is full of wonder for the wizardry Michael Dickson can perform with his boot on an NFL ball but there is another characteristic he noticed about the former Sydney Swans prospect. It was the 21-year-old’s toughness. “The fact that Michael doesn’t want to wear a helmet if he doesn’t have to says enough,” Carroll told reporters after the Seahawks dramatically struck a deal with the Denver Broncos during the weekend’s NFL Draft to move up and snare the Australian in the fifth round. The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles are also chuffed with their new Australian recruit. They used their final pick on 207cm tall, 155kg Jordan Mailata,
forward never playing a game of American football. The Eagles became intrigued when they saw a show reel Mailata’s management uploaded on YouTube of the forward stampeding rugby league opponents. “I’m sure all of you have seen it,” Philadelphia’s executive vice president Howie Roseman told reporters. “People are bouncing off him. “That was impressive.” Then Eagles’ offensive line coaches Jeff Stoutland and Eugene Chung then scouted and worked Mailata out and were blown away by his potential. “We’re excited about the size and athleticism,” Roseman said. Unlike Mailata who only arrived in the US a few months ago, Dickson has spent the past three years shattering punting
records at the University of Texas. He capped it off with the MVP award in December’s Texas Bowl by destroying the University of Missouri with his pinpoint punts and he claimed the Ray Guy Award for best punter in college football. “He can do stuff with a ball that we haven’t seen yet,” Carroll said. Seahawks general manager John Schneider recalled the day Dickson arrived in Seattle for a pre-draft workout and the city was hit by a savage rain storm. The Seahawks told Dickson he might not be able to workout. “The kid was down in the dumps,” Schneider said. “It let up a little bit and they went out in some nasty weather and he still crushed it. “His workout was one of the coolest things. “This guy does stuff with the ball that is amazing.” Ironically it was Dickson’s punting coach, ProKick Australia’s Nathan Chapman, who first opened Schneider’s eyes to Australian rules players. Chapman, after playing for Brisbane and Hawthorn in the AFL, had a stint at the Green Bay Packers in 2004 when Schneider was an executive. “They are so talented with the ball,” the executive, asked about Aussie rules converts, said. “We had a guy in Green Bay who could drop kick footballs from 50 or 60 yards. “He’d run from different angles and kick it through the goals. “It was really cool.”
GABBA LOSING GROUND IN STADIUM RANKS
T
he Gabba’s position in Australia’s cricket stadium pecking order continues to slide after being overlooked as a venue to host world No.1 Test side India this summer. Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland admitted it was “pretty clear that the Gabba has slipped down the rankings
a little bit” after announcing Brisbane would instead host Sri Lanka in a day-night Test in January. New stadiums in Perth and Adelaide have leapfrogged the outdated Gabba, where Australia has traditionally played the first Test of each summer and not lost since 1988.

TEAM 11 SHOWCASE
A-LEAGUE STADIUM PLANS
M
omentum is building behind an expansion A-League team in southeast Melbourne, with plans and a site for a 15,000-seat stadium based in Dandenong unveiled on Monday. One of Australia’s best-known sports investors Gerry Ryan and well-loved Socceroos, Vince Grella, threw their support behind the “Team 11” bid, declaring the region perfect for an A-League and W-League outfit. “Just look at the opportunity to unite the community and build something great,” Ryan told AAP. “There’s 1.2 million people here. There’s so many clubs here. “It’s common sense to have an A-League club here. It would be a success.” Ryan founded cycling outfit Orica-Scott, has invested in the A-League’s Brisbane Roar and NRL heavyweights Melbourne Storm, as well as sitting on AFL club St Kilda’s board. The BRW rich-lister said investing in the club or the stadium was on his radar. “I’m open to it depending on the people,” he said. “I can also be an advisor. I can talk about structure and developing cultures.” The Dandenong stadium is viewed as a game-changer for the Team 11 bid, which is backed by three major councils in southeast Melbourne. The Greater Dandenong Council will gift the land to the team if they are selected as a successful bidder, paving the way for the $170 million stadium - which still needs additional public and private investment.
The stadium would house Team 11’s A-League, W-League and youth teams, with the potential to host NRL and Super Rugby matches and other major events. Grella said the region’s contribution to the national team was remarkable. “Jackson Irvine, Bailey Wright, Scott McDonald, myself ... that’s four Socceroos from here and there are definitely potential Socceroos out there,” he told AAP. “I would have loved to have played football where I was born ... the stadium plans look great. “I wish I could turn back the clock to play in it.” The bid also won qualified support from potential rivals Melbourne Victory on Monday. Speaking on SEN, Victory chief executive Trent Jacobs said the club supported expansion in principle and he favoured another club in Victory’s backyard - provided it wasn’t based at AAMI Park. “We’d probably be a little disappointed if another Melbourne club came and played out of AAMI Park,” he said. “To have another rival in Melbourne ... with their own stadium would only be a good thing.” Competition for an A-League licence has intensified over the past month after FFA announced it would accept two new teams into the competition for the 2019/2020 season. An announcement on those teams will be made in October. Up to a dozen consortiums are putting together their bid documents in the hope of admission into the A-League.
KO BEATS MINJEE LEE IN LPGA PLAYOFF N
ew Zealand’s Lydia Ko has made a brilliant eagle to beat Australian Minjee Lee on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff at the LPGA Tour event in San Francisco. Former world No.1 Ko hit a 3-wood second shot to within a metre of the pin on the par 5 18th then holed the putt to claim her 15th LPGA victory, ending a title drought dating back to July 2016. Earlier fellow 21-year-old Lee, who was chasing a fourth LPGA title, shot a four-underpar 68 to finish regulation tied at 12 under with overnight leader Ko (71) after both made birdies on the last. The Australian was clearly comfortable on the Lake Merced course where she won the 2012 US Girls’ Junior title. But Ko had even better history there, having won the LPGA Swinging Skirts tournament at the tree-lined layout in 2014 and 2015. There was plenty of pressure on her though. Ko’s title drought had stretched over 43 events and was marked by changes in instructors, caddies and
equipment and a large weight loss. “My whole team and my family, they’ve worked really hard for this moment,” Ko said. “I’m happy that a few of them are here and we can celebrate together.” Twenty yards behind Lee in the fairway in the playoff, Ko hit a 3-wood that cleared the tree limbs on the right, landed in front of the green and rolled inches by on the right side. “I hit some really good 3-woods today and I said, ‘Hey, you’ve got to maybe try and copy the one on the other par 5,” Ko said. “I was able to hit a good shot again. I didn’t really know how close it was going to be.” Lee hit her second shot into the rough near the right greenside bunker and managed to make a 10-foot putt for birdie but it was not enough to deny Ko. American Jessica Korda played in the final group with Ko but finished with a 74 to drop into a tie for third at 8 under with Angel Yin (67), Shanshan Feng (68) and Charley Hull (70).

Brazil’s Koxa surfs biggest wave on record B
razilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa was named a ‘world record holder’ at the weekend after the judging panel at the World Surf League (WSL) Big Wave Awards decided he had ridden an 80-foot (24.38m) wave in Portugal last year. Koxa won the “Biggest Wave” award for successfully managing the huge swell off Nazare on Portugal’s Silver Coast on November 8, his ride adjudged to have bettered American Garrett McNamara’s record of 78 feet at the same break in 2011. “I try to surf big waves all my life and I had a huge experience in 2014 where I almost
died at Nazare,” Koxa told worldsurfleague.com. “Four months later, I had bad dreams, I didn’t travel, I got scared, and my wife helped me psychologically. Now, I’m just so happy and this is the best day of my life.” Andrew Cotton might be forgiven a few bad dreams after his spectacular wipeout at Nazare on the same day as Koxa nailed his big ride. The Englishman, who was left nursing 12 broken vertebrae in his back and is only now almost ready to get back into the water, was awarded the “Wipeout of the Year” at the ceremony in Santa Monica, California.

AUSTRALIA DESIRE DAY-NIGHT INDIA TEST C
ricket Australia (CA) is still hoping it can persuade India that the opening match of their four-Test series in Adelaide should be be a daynighter. CA released its full summer international schedule on Monday but could not confirm it will continue its recent tradition of pink-ball Tests in the clash at Adelaide Oval from December 6. The powerful Board of Control for Cricket in India has been opposed to the day-night Test innovation started by Australia in 2015 However, a report from India last week indicated they may play one of two home Tests against West Windies in October under lights. Is so, it would help prepare them for a pink-ball clash on Australian soil. “It is our preference that we play India in a day-night test match in Adelaide, but we are still working through this detail and hope to have an answer on this in the coming weeks,” CA chief executive James Sutherland said. Perth Stadium will host a Test match for the first time when it host the second Test against India from December 14 to 18. With Melbourne and Sydney hosting India for the traditional Boxing Day and New Year Tests, Brisbane misses out on the summer’s most high-profile series and loses its status as the seasonopening Test venue. Instead the Gabba will host the first of two Tests against Sri Lanka, a day-nighter from January 24 which runs over the Australia Day long weekend. Canberra’s Manuka Oval will host its maiden Test when
Australia round out their home summer of cricket in game two against Sri Lanka from Feb 1. The Gold Coast is to host international cricket for the first time, staging a T20 game between Australia and South Africa. The T20 international at Metricon Stadium on November 17 will follow Australia’s three one-dayers against the touring Proteas in Perth, Adelaide and Hobart.

KING OF CLAY
Nadal wins Barcelona Open
R
afael Nadal continues to make winning on clay look all too easy as his preparations for an unprecedented 11th French Open title clicked into overdrive. The Spaniard extended his dominance on the surface with a 6-2 6-1 win over 19-yearold Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas on Sunday, claiming his 11th Barcelona Open title. Nadal, who also won his 11th Monte Carlos Masters title last week, was never seriously challenged on his way to a 19thstraight victory on clay. He has won 46 straight sets on the red dirt, extending his own record. Nadal hasn’t lost on clay since Dominic Thiem’s surprise win in Rome last year. “It’s very difficult to describe how to win 11 titles at one tournament,” he said. “To win 11 Monte Carlos and 11 Barcelonas is something I couldn’t imagine doing. “I’m just enjoying every week and the fact I’m playing in a tournament that I enjoy so much means a lot to me.” It was the 77th title overall for Nadal, tying him with John McEnroe for fourth best in the Open Era. Only Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer and Ivan Lendl are ahead.
Nadal, who won his 400th match on clay in Saturday’s semi-final, needed the victory in Barcelona to secure his No.1 ranking. “It’s hard for anybody to imagine all the feelings and emotions I have when I play here,” Nadal said. “Hopefully I can keep coming back for many more years to come.” Nadal will be at unbackable odds to defend his French Open title next month at Roland Garros. The 63rd-ranked Tsitsipas was trying to become the first Greek to win an ATP Tour title. He was the first Greek to make it to an ATP final since Nicholas Kalogeropoulos in 1973. “I knew the chances to win were small but my confidence was rising in every match, and while I was expecting a little better today, congratulations to Rafa,” Tsitsipas said. “It was a first experience and tougher than I thought. “I’ve watched him millions of times on TV, but it’s tougher to face him in reality.” Tsitsipas was the youngest finalist in Barcelona since 2005 and was looking to become the first unseeded champion in the tournament since Gaston Gaudio in 2002.

Gibbs backs Blues to bounce back A
delaide recruit Bryce Gibbs is ready to put his Carlton friendships on hold but reckons the Blues will climb the AFL ladder sooner rather than later. Gibbs will come up against his former side for the first time on Saturday night when the Crows host the bottom-placed Blues at Adelaide Oval. The star midfielder was granted a trade to return to his native Victoria at the end of last season, having been blocked from joining the Crows a year earlier. Things have since unravelled badly for the Blues, whose 0-6 win-loss record is the worst start to a season in the club’s 122-year VFL/AFL history. Gibbs, who spent 11 years at Carlton before joining the Crows, has backed the Blues’ leaders to ensure they bounce back from their form slump. “They are doing it a little bit tough at the moment but I know the strong characters they’ve got in that group and the leaders who would no doubt be driving them each week to improve,” he said on Monday. “They certainly go out each week thinking they can win that game of footy. It’ll be no different this week
so we have to respect that.” The Blues played finals in 2013 but have finished in the bottom six every year since. A finals berth is highly unlikely this season but Gibbs said the Blues had enough young talent to be in contention soon enough. “Who knows, it might not take two or three years for them. It can jump pretty quick,” Gibbs said. “They went back to the draft and they tried to get some talent though the door. “They’ve got some really exciting players - Zac Fisher, Charlie Curnow, Paddy Dow - the fans can be excited. “Although the wins aren’t showing that, they’re definitely on the right track.” Gibbs remains close friends with Kade Simpson, Dale Thomas and several other Blues but is expecting a hostile reception from his former teammates on Saturday night. “There’ll be no friendships for two hours,” Gibbs said. “After the game, we’ll shake hands and everything will be back to normal. “It’ll be a fierce and competitive contest and we’ll be out trying to knock each other’s block off, no doubt.”
EAGLES WON’T GET CAUGHT
UP IN GROWING HYPE W
est Coast coach Adam Simpson has praised the resilience of his group, but says it’s too early to get caught up in the growing hype surrounding the AFL club. The Eagles improved
their record to 5-1 after beating Fremantle by eight points in an entertaining western derby at Optus Stadium on Sunday. West Coast were widely tipped to miss the finals this season, with Carlton great Robert Walls even predicting a wooden spoon for the club. But the Eagles are now in a solid position to not only lock
away a finals berth, but also push for a top-four finish. Simpson was proud of the way his team overcame an early 20-point deficit to beat the Dockers. The second half was an arm wrestle, and West Coast managed to keep Fremantle at arm’s length when the game was at its hottest.

KEY BULLDOG HAMSTRUNG, CROWS AWAIT SCANS
W
estern Bulldogs skipper Easton Wood will miss up to three AFL games after injuring his hamstring during Friday night’s victory over Carlton. Scans have confirmed the rebounding defender suffered a lowgrade hamstring injury during the 21-point win at Etihad Stadium. And in another major blow for the 15th-placed Bulldogs, key forward Jack Redpath is out for up to three months after undergoing knee surgery.
Redpath, who missed the Bulldogs’ past two games, has had an operation to repair the meniscus in his knee and will miss 10 to 12 weeks. Wood’s injury is certain to exacerbate the lack of experience in the Bulldogs backline following the retirement of Matthew Boyd and Bob Murphy. Key defenders Dale Morris (knee) and Marcus Adams (ankle) are both several weeks away from returning to senior action.
NO AFL REST FOR DOCKERS’
SANDILANDS YET
F
remantle coach Ross Lyon has an important message for ruckman Aaron Sandilands, please hang on for just a little bit longer. Sandilands has battled manfully as the club’s lead ruckman this season, averaging 40 hit-outs across the first six rounds. But the 35-year-old appeared tired at times in Sunday’s eight-point derby loss
to West Coast at Optus Stadium, where he was forced to confront Eagles ruck duo Nic Naitanui and Scott Lycett. West Coast won the ruck taps 52-34, with Lycett doing plenty of damage around the ground with 18 disposals and four clearances. Lyon wanted to rest Sandilands two weeks ago but he was forced to shelve those plans when understudy Sean Darcy injured the PCL in his left knee.

ollingwood coach Nathan Buckley suspects there is no clear-cut solution that will make the AFL’s controversial video review a perfect system. Richmond coach Damien Hardwick was again fuming about the score reviews after Sunday’s win over the Magpies. Goals to Tigers forwards Josh Caddy and Jack Riewoldt were overturned on review. Hardwick said the reviews take too long and he noted it was unclear why Caddy’s goal was disallowed. It turned out Caddy’s kick was touched off the boot, but the only video shown on the MCG scoreboard during the review was what happened at the goal line. Sunday’s’ reviews come less than a month after a bizarre incident when the reviewer ruled a goal to Richmond, even though Hawthorn defender Jack Gunston was the last player to
touch the ball. The umpires had to quickly step in to change the score to a Richmond rushed behind and Hardwick was also frustrated by that incident. “We all want to get the decision right,” Buckley said. “Everyone who’s in the spotlight is paranoid about making blues, but no-one’s perfect. “We want to impose a perfect system - the umpires aren’t perfect, they miss stuff, I’m not perfect, I miss stuff. We don’t get everything right. “Would you accept 95 per cent accuracy? Because you’re going to get that without the goal review and I don’t know we’re getting 100 even with it.”
Buckley doubts AFL reviews can be perfect UNMATCHED QUALITY • Tradesman • Tipper • Machinery • Car Carrier • Tandem Trailers... & many more
