orld-leading technology to detect texting drivers will be trialled in NSW within months as the state government vows to crackdown on drivers doing the wrong thing. Roads Minister Melinda Pavey wants NSW to have the strongest rules in the country as authorities plead with drivers to put their phones away while driving. “People aren’t respecting the rules,” the minister told 2GB. It comes as more than 2000 NSW drivers have been caught texting when behind the wheel since two police officers were critically injured after an alleged repeat offender ploughed into them in Sydney’s southwest less than a month ago. “(We) certainly have a problem. Technology is going to be our friend in this,” Ms Pavey said. “(We’re) getting the technology right so we can have random testing of people doing the

wrong thing. “It’s world-leading technology ... and the trial will start in about four months.” The technology consists of red-light-style cameras capable of detecting mobile phones being used on drivers’ laps or on passenger seats. Ms Pavey said the legislative framework is being worked out alongside the trial. Authorities will also look at strengthening penalties. Using a mobile while behind the wheel currently attracts a $330 fine and the loss of four licence points “We want to have the strongest rules in Australia,” the minister said. Jakob Thornton, 22, was allegedly looking at his phone for 10-to-20 seconds when he crashed into officers Jonathan Wright and Matthew Foley who were setting up an RBT station in Leumeah on February 16.

Ex-AFL star’s fight to clear name goes on F

ormer AFL star Glenn Archer’s fight to clear his name of assault continues after a Supreme Court judge threw out a bid to end his challenge. Victorian taxpayers will now foot the bill for legal expenses, including Archer’s, after a Director of Public Prosecutions court action was dismissed on Friday. Archer, 45, is fighting a legal battle to overturn an assault conviction he received after pleading guilty to punching a runner at a junior football game. The North Melbourne great struck the volunteer, breaking his glasses as tensions boiled at his son’s game at a Heidelberg oval in June. He pleaded guilty to assault in September, but was taken aback when he was convicted of the crime, fined $2000 and ordered to replace the victim’s prescription specs. Archer had believed he would only get a “slap on the wrist” from the Heidelberg magistrate, he later said. He launched an appeal, initially

against the sentence, saying it was too harsh, and later against the conviction. In November, County Court Judge Paul Grant permitted Archer’s appeal, despite it coming later than the 28-day time limit after sentencing. The judge found there were “exceptional circumstances” because Archer had not been properly briefed by lawyers on his appeal rights and responsibilities. But the DPP disagreed, saying the appeal shouldn’t have been allowed, and launched action to stop the ex-Kangaroo. “It is not enough to say ‘I have exceptional circumstances because I didn’t like the outcome and I had a bad lawyer’,” DPP barrister Ray Gibson told the Supreme Court on Friday. “There is nothing special here about Mr Archer’s (bid) to appeal, your honour.” But Justice Kevin Bell found no error of law had occurred and threw out the DPP’s appeal. “I’m really happy with the outcome,” Archer said as he left court on Friday. Justice Bell ordered legal

costs be paid by the Chief Commissioner of Police. Archer is expected to face a three-day appeal hearing in the County Court at a later date. “We’ll go to the County Court now and see how we go,” he said. Archer played 311 games for

the Kangaroos and was named in the club’s Team of the Century. The fearless defender won the Robert Rose Award for the AFL’s most courageous player a record six times and was awarded the 1996 Norm Smith Medal.

DRINK DRIVING? BOFFINS TURN BEER INTO FUEL B

eer is the best alcoholic drink to convert into fuel and could be key to developing a sustainable alternative to petrol, scientists have found. Chemists at the University of Bristol have spent years

developing technology to convert widely-available ethanol into butanol. Butanol is a better fuel alternative to the widely-used ethanol, which has a lower energy density and can be corrosive to engines, they say.

The scientists have been able to convert pure, dry ethanol into butanol in laboratory conditions. They are now working to scale up the technology using real ethanol fermentation broths, which contain up to 90 per cent water along with other impurities. “The alcohol in alcoholic drinks is actually ethanol - exactly the same molecule that we want to convert into butanol as a petrol replacement,” said Professor Duncan Wass, of the university’s School of Chemistry. “So alcoholic drinks are an ideal model for industrial ethanol fermentation broths - ethanol for fuel is essentially made using a brewing process. “If our technology works with alcoholic drinks - especially beer, which is the best model - then it shows it has the potential to be scaled up to make butanol as a petrol replacement on an industrial scale.” The chemists used a catalyst, a substance used to speed up and control a chemical reaction, to convert ethanol into butanol.

They found their catalysts will convert beer - specifically the ethanol in beer - to butanol. Prof Wass said beer would not be used on an industrial scale but was an “excellent readily available model” to test the technology. The team will now build a largescale version of their technology, which could take up to five years even if it runs smoothly. They are also trying to understand what makes their catalysts so successful at converting ethanol into butanol. “Beer is actually an excellent model for the mixture of chemicals we would need to use in a real industrial process, so it shows this technology is one step closer to reality,” Prof Wass added.

Salty snags raise concerns for Aussie BBQs NEW FREEWAY FOR MELBOURNE’S

B

BQ loving Australians have been warned a sausage sandwich with tomato sauce contains nearly half the recommended daily salt intake. Researchers at the The George Institute for Global Health analysed the salt content in more than 1000 processed meat products like sausages, ham and bacon from Australia’s four major supermarkets from 2010 to 2017. While bacon and sliced meats reduced their salt content, there was no change to the salt content of sausages during that seven year period. On average just one sausage contains more than one-quarter (28 per cent) of an adult’s recommended daily salt intake.

The analysis also revealed huge variation in salt content, with some snags three times saltier than others. Coles thin pork BBQ sausages were the saltiest, containing 2.9 grams of salt per 100g of sausages, according to the research. The sausages containing the least salt were Cleaver’s Organic Beef Sausages (0.95g of salt per 100g). The researchers warned that when eating a sausage with slice of white bread and tomato sauce a person would consume about 2.35 grams of salt. It’s recommended adults eat less than five grams of salt per day, with excess salt consumption directly linked to high blood pressure - a key risk factor for heart attack and stroke. Heart Foundation Victoria Dietitian Sian Armstrong says the drop in salt in bacon and sliced meat products proves manufacturers can make their meats less salty. “It’s a massive concern that in almost a decade there’s been no change to the salt levels in

sausages,” Ms Armstrong said. “The average Aussie eats 44 sausages a year totalling 16 teaspoons of salt,” Ms Armstrong said. Public health experts have called for national targets to be established to drive manufacturers to reformulate their processed sausages to make them less salty. “We know that setting salt targets and regular monitoring of the food industry towards achieving the targets works. Currently there are no salt targets for sausages - which is of huge concern, given how much salt they contain, and their popularity,” the report’s lead author Clare Farrand, a nutritionist at the George Institute said. VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter also reminded consumers to be more mindful of salt content the next time they reach for the snags in the supermarket aisle. “We understand that sausages can be a quick BBQ option, but next time why not try filling the hot plate with other healthier options like chicken or veggie skewers,” Ms Rechter said.

planned bypass in Melbourne’s southeast is set to become a four-lane freeway under a $75 million cash injection in the upcoming state budget. The Victorian government has already set aside $300 million for the planned Mordialloc Bypass, but the extra funds it announced on Monday will upgrade the bypass into a four-lane freeway. The government says the $375 million project will create more than 400 jobs and slash 10 minutes from a trip between the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and Dingley Bypass. Premier Daniel Andrews said traffic lights will be scrapped to ease congestion and drivers will have an alternative to using local roads. “This is all about getting people home faster and getting people home safer,” Mr Andrews told reporters.

HAN SOLO AT CENTRE OF NEW STARS WARS FILM

S

tar Wars fans have one more piece of content to speculate over before “Solo: A Star Wars Story” hits theatres. A new trailer dropped on Sunday prompting fans to wonder what originally caused Han Solo to take to the stars and featuring the assembly of a team to take on a new “job.” “You’re after something,” narrates Emilia Clarke’s Qi’Ra. “Is it revenge? Money? Or something else?” “I’m a driver, and I’m a flyer,”

says Solo as Tobias Beckett tells him of the job. “I waited a long time for a shot like this.” Qi’Ra explains she knows a guy with a ship -- the best smuggler around -- who reveals himself to be none other than Lando Calrissian. “I heard a story about you, I was wondering if it’s true,” says Solo. “Everything you’ve heard about me is true,” replies Lando. The second new generation prequel film, after “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” is set to

premiere at Cannes Film Festival, 10 days before its official release date. Alden Ehrenreich stars as a young Han Solo and Donald Glover plays fellow smuggler Lando Calrissian. Clarke and Woody Harrelson also topline the space opera, directed by Ron Howard, who replaced Phil Lord and Chris Miller after the duo was fired last summer over creative differences. The film hits theatres May 25.

ark Hamill has paid tribute to his Star Wars co-star Daisy Ridley, saying she is a “delight to work with”. The Luke Skywalker actor shared on Instagram a collage of pictures of himself with Ridley, and Ridley in character as Rey in the sci-fi franchise. “SHOUT OUT to #DaisyRidley for no particular reason other than she is a brilliantly natural, instinctive actor, a delight to work with & the best piggy-back ride in the business!” he wrote. “Luke should be so lucky to have had such a lovely daughter. #DarlingDaisy.” Hamill, 66, and Ridley, 26, have appeared together in the two most recent Star Wars films - The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Fans have shared their own theories that heroine Rey is the daughter of Luke, as it has so far been revealed in the series that her parents were “nobodies”. British actress Ridley has won a number of industry accolades since appearing as scavenger Rey in the Star Wars movies, including two Empire Awards and an MTV Movie Award.

MELBOURNE BEER FEST TO

FEATURE SNAIL BREW

Y

ou’ve probably heard of worms in tequila. Well, now a Victorian brewery plans to test the taste buds of beerlovers with a snail-infused brew. Blackman’s Brewery at Torquay is busy concocting the snaily sensation for an upcoming beer festival, which hits Melbourne in May. Among more than 160 unique craft beers and ciders brewed especially for the festival, the Torquay creation - ‘The Escargose’ - is perhaps the weirdest. Its ingredients are sourced locally, including the slimy, shelled gastropods. “We don’t just get them out of the driveway,” owner and head brewer Renn Blackman told AAP. “They’re from a place called Simpson, which is sort of halfway between Torquay and Warrnambool, on a snail farm.” The beer will also feature seawater from a nearby beach as well as parsley, thyme and pine nuts to mimic flavours of the salty French delicacy.

Blackman and his team plan to add the snails whole to the brew kettle, similar to the way some brewers make muscle or oyster stouts, with “some snaily, meaty pieces” likely filtering through. “Generally we’re not too crazy in our brewing, but for (the festival), that’s what it’s all about,” he said. “It’s about pushing boundaries and making the most exciting, unused ingredient beer you can. “But for us the goal, too, is to make it still drinkable and still balanced - it still has to be a good beer.” The Torquay beer-maker has previously entered a killer python lolly kolsch beer, espresso martini kolsch and IPA-cider snake bite blend. For those hesitant to try the bizarre snail brew, other beers featuring Tasmanian jam, toasted marshmallows, rhubarb, Skittles, ice cream, dates, gin, Bertie Beetles, crickets and oysters will be on show at the three-day Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular festival.

Victoria’s $500 million AFL cash injection

ictoria will pour nearly $500 million into its AFL grounds, with almost half the cash going to a makeover of Etihad Stadium and millions for women’s football. In a $225 million deal with the AFL, the grand final will stay at the MCG until at least 2057, while Etihad Stadium and its surrounding precinct will be upgraded. “This is for the fans - giving them the best venues, better access to the sports they love, and keeping the Grand Final where it belongs - at the MCG - for the next 40 years,” Premier Daniel Andrews said in a statement. “This landmark deal will bring more footy to the regions, boost AFLW facilities and make sure Victoria stays the sporting capital of Australia.” Etihad will be redeveloped for rectangular sports like soccer and rugby, its women’s change facilities will be improved and there will be guaranteed access for other codes and major events. The deal also means the Melbourne Cricket Club Trust has the security to undertake a major

redevelopment of the MCG. Premier Daniel Andrews said the investment of taxpayer dollars was necessary for Melbourne to remain the sport and major events capital and create jobs. “If you don’t invest in those things, then others pass you by,” Mr Andrews told ABC radio on Friday. “NSW are doing this, obviously Queensland will have a whole

Shark Tank stars warn of bitcoin

SCAM N

etwork Ten is still fending off false claims its Shark Tank stars have endorsed a bitcoin trading platform that has been reported to federal authorities. The claims were carried in a fake story saying Shark Tank investor and Boost Juice founder Janine Allis profited from the platform "within 3 minutes" of it being presented on an episode of the show. It also falsely claimed fellow Shark Tank investor and entrepreneur Steve Baxter bid $2.5 million for a 20 per cent share of the business. The item, with false quotes, first appeared in early March and Baxter and Allis both posted warnings on their personal Twitter accounts denying the claims. The platform never appeared on Shark Tank, nor do its stars endorse it. But despite the warnings another version of the claims appeared on Twitter last week, and an advertisement appeared

this week on the front page of the Brisbane Times website owned by Fairfax Media. A Brisbane Times spokesman said the ad was generated by a third party and "was inadvertently served on the site. As soon as it was identified as being illegitimate, it was removed". The Queensland Police Service has not received any complaints but a spokeswoman said two were lodged with the federal Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network. A Victoria Police spokeswoman told AAP it was aware of reports of an online scam involving a digital currency.

“In one instance, a formal complaint was not made and ... in the second instance, the complaint was referred to New South Wales Police,” the spokeswoman said. The Shark Tank investors and Ten have continually warned the public about the claims. “Network Ten is aware of the recent internet scam incorrectly advertising the Sharks from Shark Tank endorsing Bitcoin Trader,” the Ten spokesman said. “The ad is completely false and misleading. Network Ten has ensured that all Shark Tank social media sites, the official website and tenplay exhibit clear

warnings cautioning viewers and potential consumers of the scam.” Baxter has a pinned tweet on his Twitter page which has been retweeted by Allis. “SCAM ALERT. None of us invested nor endorse. Thanks to those sending it to us.w Please retweet as much as you can if possible. The people running the scam are lower than snakes bums,” Baxter tweeted. The ACCC's Scamwatch received 1289 bitcoin-related scam reports in 2017 with reported losses of more than $1.2 million.

iWitnessed, launched on Tuesday, uses guided questioning to prompt users to record facts about an event including its nature, location, whether there were injuries and the witness’s emotions at the time. The content, which can be taken as text, voice recordings or images, is also time and GPS stamped with the option to forward a copy to police or a secure email address. The app has the backing of former NSW Director of Public Prosecutions Nicholas Cowdery QC, who says the content could be relied upon in court in the same way as contemporaneous notes or recordings to refresh a person’s memory. “Contemporaneous notes, even if scribbled on the back of a napkin, can strengthen the reliability and strength of

the evidence being given in court proceedings,” he said in a statement. The free app was developed by researchers from the University of Sydney and UNSW, who consulted with police and lawyers. Dr Helen Paterson, a senior forensic psychology lecturer at the University of Sydney who worked on the project, says recalling an event within 24 hours of when it occurred helps consolidate a memory. “That’s a critical time period - that’s what our research has shown,” she told AAP. “You have to try to give it as soon as possible after the event, but within 24 hours.” The recall process can also help a person resist misinformation later on, for example in a police interview that includes leading questions.

The app includes an “emotions” tab for users to record how they felt at the time - an addition that came about after police suggestions. “That can have implications for prosecutions,” Dr Paterson said. “For example, if you feel intimidated or scared, that might mean different crimes have been committed.” Lawyers frequently question the reliability of witness memories as part of a defence argument, particularly when a trial takes place many years after a crime. Dr Paterson said she hopes the app will help courts get to the truth of the matter. “I hope that it’s going to lead to more reliable testimony in court.” iWitnessed can be downloaded from the Apple or Android app stores from Tuesday.

olombia has arrested a soon-to-be congressman from the Marxist FARC party on charges of drug trafficking, sparking outrage from the former rebel group that disbanded last year. Seusis Hernandez, who was due to take office in July, conspired to export 10 tonnes of cocaine worth $US320 million in street value to the United States, Attorney General Nestor Humberto Martinez said in a televised address with President Juan Manuel Santos. A US grand jury in the Southern District of New York indicted Hernandez, known by his nom de guerre Jesus Santrich, and three others last week. “The attorney general has informed me that, as the result of rigourous investigation, he has forceful and conclusive proof that show the responsibility of Seusis Hernandez, known as Jesus Santrich, for drug trafficking crimes committed after the accord was signed,” Santos said, referring to the 2016 peace deal between the FARC and the government. Hernandez will remain in custody until the US request for

Covering, but no

extradition is formalised. Under the terms of the deal, FARC has 10 guaranteed congress seats through 2026, one of which the party awarded to Hernandez. The arrest sparked condemnation by the FARC, which said it was an attack on the peace process. It was unclear whether the party was planning on replacing Hernandez and with whom. “This is the worst moment the peace process has been through,” the FARC added on Twitter. “The government should act and stop judicial set-ups from leading to events like this, which cause great mistrust.” Crimes committed by FARC members during the war are set to be adjudicated by a special tribunal, but those committed after demobilisation are subject to regular judicial procedure, which includes the possibility of extradition. The group has repeatedly expressed fear it will be targeted by assassins and persecuted by authorities now it has demobilised. It says more than 50 party members and relatives have been killed since peace was signed.

NASA SPACECRAFT TO PROWL FOR PLANETS

N

ASA's newest planet hunter, set to lift off early next week, will prowl for planets around the closest, brightest stars. The newfound worlds found by the Tess spacecraft eventually will become prime targets for future telescopes looking to tease out any signs of life. It will be the most extensive survey of its kind from orbit. Scientists expect Tess to find thousands of exoplanets - the term for planets outside our solar system. “All astronomers for centuries to come are really going to focus on these objects,” said the mission's chief scientist George Ricker of Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “This is really a mission for the ages.” NASA's astrophysics director, Paul Hertz, said missions like Tess will help answer whether we're alone - or just lucky enough to have “the best prime real estate in the galaxy.” Tess - short for Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite - is the heir apparent to the Kepler Space Telescope , the pioneer of planetary census. Kepler's fuel

tank is running precariously low after nine years of flight, and NASA expects it to shut down within months. The exoplanet count, from all observatories in space and on Earth over the past couple of decades, stands at more than 3700 confirmed with 4500 on the strong contender list. About 50 are believed to potentially habitable. They have the right size and the right orbit of their star to support surface water and, at least theoretically, to support life. Most of the Kepler-identified planets are so far away that it would take monster-size telescopes to examine them more. So astronomers want to focus on stars that are vastly brighter and closer to home - close enough for NASA’s upcoming James Webb Space Telescope to scrutinise the atmospheres of planets lurking in their sun’s shadows. MIT's Sara Seager, an astrophysicist who has dedicated her life to finding another Earth, imagines water worlds waiting to be explored. Perhaps hot super Earths with lakes of liquid lava. Maybe even rocky or icy

planets with thin atmospheres reminiscent of Earth. “It's not “Interstellar” or “Arrival.” Not yet anyway,” she said, referring to the recent hit science-fiction films. The total mission price tag for Tess is $US337 million ($A435 million). The 362kg Tess will ride a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station with lift-off scheduled for Monday. Its eventual orbit of Earth will stretch all the way to the orbit of the moon.

Tess’ four cameras will zoom in on red dwarf stars in our cosmic backyard. A planet should cause a slight, brief dip in its star's brightness as it passes right in front. Tess will detect any such blips. Scientists like to think robotic explorers would be launched from Earth for closer inspections to search for life, though the technology for interstellar travel has yet to be developed.

esearchers hope to find the lost ship of Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton when they set off on a major international scientific expedition next year. Led by scientists at Cambridge University’s Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI), the team hopes to locate the Endurance, which has lain at the bottom of the Weddell Sea since 1915. Slated for 2019, the scientific mission to investigate the Larsen C Ice Shelf will also search for the wreck 3000m down. The group, which includes researchers from universities in South Africa and New Zealand, will be the first to use autonomous underwater vehicles to scan the seabed for the ship’s remains. SPRI’s director, Professor Julian Dowdeswell, chief scientist of the Weddell Sea Expedition 2019, told The Times that the Agulhas II expedition ship would be put to the test by the conditions. He said: “Whatever ship you have, it’s possible it won't get there. It could be a better or worse sea ice year, so everybody is going into this with their eyes open.” Shackleton’s attempt to cross

Antarctica began in 1914. After the vessel became trapped in ice for 10 months and then sank, the explorer and his crew survived for six months before reaching uninhabited Elephant Island. Shackleton and five other men then set off to seek help at a whaling station on the island of South Georgia, with their perilous journey regarded as one of the most heroic feats of navigation. After three unsuccessful attempts, Shackleton finally rescued his men in August 1916. Alexandra Shackleton, the explorer’s granddaughter, supports the expedition, but as her family owns the wreck their permission will be needed if any items are to be recovered. She told the paper: “I would love to see her image. But I'm not sure how I would feel about having her touched.” As for the team’s chances of actually finding the Endurance, she said it is a “very big if”. “People plan to do things in the Antarctic and the Antarctic decides otherwise, as my grandfather found,” she said.

Russian tycoon arrested for embezzlement

R

ussian authorities have arrested billionaire Ziyavudin Magomedov on charges of embezzling more than $US35 million in one of the highest-profile prosecutions of a Russian tycoon in years. Magomedov denied the charges at a pre-trial hearing, where a judge ordered that he be held in custody until May 30. One of Russia’s richest men, 49-year-old Magomedov holds assets in construction and logistics through his sprawling Summa Group. He also has investments in US tech ventures, including the Virgin One Hyperloop project, He was detained along with his business partner and brother, Magomed Magomedov, and Artur Maksidov, the head of a company in the Summa Group that was involved in construction of a soccer World Cup venue in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. The hearing on Saturday in Moscow’s Tverskoy District Court

was held to decide whether Magomedov and his associates should be detained pending trial. The judge, Maria Sizintseva, said they acted as part of an organised crime group and had tried to put pressure on witnesses. She rejected an offer from Magomedov to put up a $US35 million ($A45.5 million) bail bond, and ordered he be detained. Citing the arguments against granting bail, the judge said Magomedov had access to his own aircraft and assets abroad. The day before he was detained, he had booked a flight from Moscow to Miami, the judge said. Summa said it planned to appeal the court decision and was ready to co-operate with the investigation. Invited to speak from a cage in the courtroom, Magomedov, dressed in a dark-blue jogging suit, said: “I categorically disagree with the charges presented.... The prosecution case does not stand

up to scrutiny.” Magomedov is part of a group of Russian multimillionaires who, while publicly loyal to the Kremlin, are not in President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle. Ziyavudin Magomedov ranked 63rd last year on the Forbes list of the richest businesspeople in Russia with $US1.4 billion. In January, he was listed by the US Treasury Department as one of 96 “oligarchs” close to Putin. His Caspian Venture Capital fund has investments in ride-

hailing service Uber; Diamond Foundry, a company that produces man-made diamonds; and Peek, an online leisure activities company. Magomedov is also co-executive chairman of Los Angeles-based tech firm Virgin Hyperloop One, which is chaired by Richard Branson. He also co-owns the Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port with Russian oil pipeline monopoly Transneft and transportation group Fesco.

“The ability to fight fires at night is a game-changer”

FIREBOMBERS TO FLY AT NIGHT IN AUST FIRST

V

ictorian firefighters will be the first in the country to fight bushfires at night using firebombing aircraft. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has given Victoria’s emergency services the green light to use two helicopters at night during the 2018-19 fire season, following a successful trial in February. Using infrared systems and night-vision goggles, one of the

two helicopters used in the trial was able to reach open water, fill up and then drop water onto controlled fires. The second also conducted a similar test, but is yet to be assessed by the aviation authority. “The ability to fight fires at night is a game-changer and this is a fantastic outcome,” Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley

said in a statement on Tuesday. “It is a key milestone in an ongoing trial that Victoria has been undertaking with both operators to develop capability to attack wildfires in the late afternoon and into the night using night-vision goggles.” The approvals mean the state will now need to develop policies and procedures to ensure night fire operations can be undertaken safely in real fire

situations. “We’ll continue to test into the next summer exactly what conditions and processes are required for night operations to be undertaken safely using the helicopters that have been approved,” Mr Lapsley said. Mr Lapsley said the state was working on the project on behalf of all other states and territories.

yan Chamley has never been convinced that the customer is always right. Having spent years working in retail, the Geelong man had enough grievances and observations to write a book. Instead, he wrote a script. “It was the first long-form thing I'd written and I was quite nervous to show anybody,” Chamley said. “The overarching theme of ‘the customer is always right’ was something I always struggled with.” So Chamley, inspired by his time working on shop floors, put together a 45-page script. “I thought it was quite funny and that I'd managed to captured the essence of retail,” he said. With very few resources, Chamley found a shop in Geelong to film a pilot for his new series, Rostered On. He assembled cast and crew and set up a fictional electrical goods store, Electroworld, where the action of the series

With very little in the way of resources, and no external funding, Chamley and his business partner Stu Ross started to build the anticipation for the show via social media. “We made little clips that looked like comedy sketches that people could relate to about the work place and there was one clip that got about three million views organically,” he said. The pilot became such a hit online, they decided to make a whole series. “It was a real team effort and we had to build our own store from broken TVs and stuff we got from cash converters and managed to pull off a season,” he said. More clips were released before the series aired, racking up a massive 250 million views across Facebook and YouTube. “It went truly viral and when it was time to release the season there was anticipation and we

RARE DINOSAUR PRINTS FOUND ON ISLE OF SKYE

D GENES NOT TO BLAME FOR

OUR ‘TASTE’ FOR FAT A person's penchant for greasy fried chips and other fatty foods can not be blamed on their genes. An Australian study of 44 set of twins found a 'taste' for fat is not driven by genetics, rather it's all down to diet and what a person chooses to eat. According to the research, funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), a high-fat diet decreased a person’s sensitivity to the taste of fat, irrespective of their body weight or genetics. “There's this idea that maybe some people are just not as good at sensing high levels of fat, and that they're born that way,” lead researcher Professor Russell Keast, Director of Deakin's Centre for Advanced Sensory Science, said. “But what we found is that genetics does not provide any protection against the dietary influence of fat. If we eat a high fat diet, we lose our ability to sense fat,” said Prof Keast. For the study, researchers conducted an eight-week dietary intervention with 44 sets of twins, recruited from Twins Research Australia. One twin from each pair was randomly allocated to a lowfat diet (getting less than 20 per cent of their energy from fat) or high-fat diet (getting more than 35 per cent of their energy from fat). Those on the high-fat diet

were encouraged to eat more dairy, meat and oil. But each consumed the same number of overall kilojoules and were monitored to keep within their normal weight range. Their taste for fat was tested at the beginning, middle and end of the trial. At each test, each twin was given three small unmarked cups of liquid, and had to identify which of the cups contained a fatty acid. If they were unable to do so, the concentration of fatty acid was increased. At four and eight weeks, the twins on the low-fat diets were able to identify the fatty acid at a lower concentrations than their twin on a high-fat diet. Essentially if people eat too many fatty foods the fat in the food eventually becomes “invisible” and this is problematic, explained Prof Keast. “People who have a lower sensitivity to the fat taste, end up eating far more kilojoules from fat because they need more to feel satiated,” he said. “That's why it's vitally important we're careful with what we're eating, otherwise we will get in a bad cycle of our bodies becoming accustomed to high levels of fat and requiring higher levels of fat to become satisfied. That can then lead to obesity.” The study is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

ozens of rare footprints belonging to dinosaurs made some 170 million years ago have been discovered on Scotland’s Isle of Skye, offering an important insight into the Middle Jurassic era, scientists say. “The more we look on the Isle of Skye, the more dinosaur footprints we find,” said Dr Steve Brusatte of the University of Edinburgh’s School of GeoSciences. “This new site records two different types of dinosaurs -- long-necked cousins of Brontosaurus and sharp-toothed cousins of T. Rex -- hanging around a shallow lagoon, back when Scotland was much warmer and dinosaurs were beginning their march to global dominance.” The find is globally

important as it is rare evidence of the Middle Jurassic period, from which few fossil sites have been found around the world, the university said on its website. The footprints were difficult to study owing to tidal conditions, the impact of weathering and changes to the landscape, it added. But researchers managed to identify two trackways in addition to many isolated footprints. They used drone photographs to make a map of the site while other images were collected using a paired set of cameras and tailored software to help model the prints. The study, carried out by the University of Edinburgh, Staffin Museum and Chinese Academy of Sciences, was published in the Scottish Journal of Geology. EAST EDITION

BOYCOTT AGAINST KOREAN UNI

KILLER ROBOTS >>...continued from front page

The centre’s aim is reportedly to “develop artificial intelligence technologies to be applied to military weapons, joining the global competition to develop autonomous arms”. The boycott will be announced on Thursday ahead of a 123-member United Nations meeting in Geneva on Monday to discuss the robot arms race. Twenty-two of the nations want an outright and pre-emptive ban on the “killer robots”. “We will boycott all collaborations with any part of

KAIST until such time as the president of KAIST provides assurances, which we have sought but not received, that the centre will not develop autonomous weapons lacking meaningful human control,” the letter states. “If developed, autonomous weapons will be the third revolution in warfare. They will permit war to be fought faster and at a scale greater than ever before. “They have the potential to be weapons of terror.”

One of Australia’s leading AI experts, Professor Toby Walsh at the University of NSW, organised the boycott and published open letters in 2015 and 2017 to warn of the dangers of these robots. “That arms race has begun. We can see prototypes of autonomous weapons under

development today by many nations including the US, China, Russia and the UK,” he said. “We are locked into an arms race that no one wants to happen. KAIST’s actions will only accelerate this arms race. We cannot tolerate this.”

C

omedian and actor Will Ferrell says he will delete his Facebook account, which currently has 10.1 million fans. In a post on the social media site he cited its mishandling of user data by Cambridge Analytica, a UK-based political data-analytics firm that obtained unauthorised info on 50 million users without their knowledge or consent. Facebook has pledged to make changes to give users more control over privacy settings and restrict usage of data on its platform, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apologised for the situation. “I know I am not alone when I say that I was very disturbed to hear about Cambridge Analytica’s misuse of millions of Facebook users’ information in order to undermine our democracy and infringe on our citizens’ privacy,” Ferrell wrote in the post.

“I can no longer, in good conscience, use the services of a company that allowed the spread of propaganda and directly aimed it at those most vulnerable.” Ferrell joins a revolt against Facebook in the wake of the user-privacy fiasco. Brian Acton, a co-founder of messaging app WhatsApp - which Facebook acquired in a deal valued at $US19 billion called for a Facebook boycott in a March 20 tweet. Ferrell, in his farewell post on Facebook, admitted that he’s “always had an aversion to social media” and has primarily used it “to help support our work at Funny Or Die” - the comedy media company he co-founded - as well as some of his personal projects and charity causes. Ferrell does not maintain Twitter or Instagram accounts.

The social media website has admitted up to 87 million users from around the world may have been affected by the data-mining scandal, up from a previous estimate of more than 50 million. hough Facebook gets the attention because of a recent privacy gaffe, the social network is far from alone in collecting massive amounts of data on you to help marketers sell you stuff. Google, for one, also does extensive tracking to power its advertising engines. And many other websites and apps run ads sold by Facebook and Google and exchange data with them. Beyond that, plenty of services including Uber and Amazon keep detailed histories on you. Here are some of the ways to block or minimise such tracking but they come with trade-offs.

DEADLY OR NOT? APP TO IDENTIFY AUS SPIDERS

I

f just seeing a spider gets you in a tangle, listen up. Alan Henderson and his daughter Caitlin climbed under park benches and reached to the roof in toilet blocks to snap Australia’s commonlyencountered spiders to help others identify the creepy crawlies. The pair hit the beaten track from Melbourne to northern Queensland over six days to catalogue spiders for the new identification app, Spidentify. Instead of being riddled with fear, these daredevils searched high and low to find spiders. “Just about everywhere we went they were there,” specialist macro photographer Mr Henderson said. “We have been inundated with people who are just interested or freaked out by spiders ... and they just want to know what spider it is. Spiders are not as bad as you may think.” Mr Henderson said no one in

Australia had died from spider venom since 1979 after the Sydney funnel-web spider antivenom was introduced in the 1980s. “Unfortunately there’s so much misinformation out there about our native spiders. We’re told they chase and attack us, they’ve got flesh-eating bites. These myths spread like wildfire,” he said. The app guides people how to identify a spider against descriptions of more than 250 species, has a colour-coded danger rating and allows users to browse region, spider family and habitat. Miss Henderson works at Melbourne’s Minibeast Wildlife, which has commissioned the new app. Mr Henderson is famously known for his work in invertebrate education in Australia including Melbourne Museum’s popular exhibition, Bugs Alive!

Call for govt help for small online shops

S

mall businesses would be able to get government grants to help them set up online stores if a group of politicians examining internetbased competition gets its way. The committee has spent more than six months looking at the effect of global internet competition on Australian businesses. In its report released on Wednesday, the committee recommended the federal government set up a digital grants program for small businesses to help them take advantage of opportunities such as online retail. Under its plan, businesses would have to match the government funding. “Online shopping is only going to continue to grow and disrupt trade in traditional bricks and mortar shops around the country,” innovation committee

chair Barnaby Joyce said in a statement. “It is vital that we support Australian businesses to invest in the digital technologies while demonstrating advantages of the virtual marketplace based in regional areas where infrastructure like the NBN is available and overheads such as rent can be much cheaper - that will enable them to take advantage of internet retail opportunities.” The committee also recommended the government take a look at competition law to ensure it deals with anticompetitive ways in which big companies collect and monetise data about online sales. It also wants money for a “digital retraining fund” and for more information to be made available to small businesses about emerging technologies and how they can use online platforms.

Tesla says car in crash was on autopilot T he electric vehicle in a fatal crash last week in California was operating on autopilot, making it the latest accident to involve a semiautonomous vehicle, Tesla has confirmed. The electric car maker said the driver, who was killed in the accident, did not have his hands on the steering wheel for six seconds before the crash, despite several warnings from the vehicle. Tesla Inc tells drivers that its autopilot system, which can keep speed, change lanes and self-park, requires drivers to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel in order to take control of the vehicle to avoid accidents. Tesla said its vehicle logs show the driver took no action to stop the Model X SUV from crashing into a concrete lane divider. Photographs of the SUV show that the front of the vehicle was demolished; its hood was ripped off; and its front wheels were scattered on the freeway. The vehicle also caught fire, though Tesla said no one was in the vehicle when that happened. The company said the crash was

made worse by a missing or damaged safety shield on the end of the freeway barrier that is supposed to reduce the impact into the concrete lane divider. The crash happened in Mountain View, in California’s Silicon Valley. The driver was Walter Huang, 38, a software engineer for Apple. “None of this changes how devastating an event like this is or how much we feel for our customer’s family and friends,” Tesla said on its website late Friday. Earlier this month, a self-driving Volvo SUV being tested by ridehailing service Uber struck and killed a pedestrian in Arizona. Tesla Inc. defended its autopilot feature, saying that while it doesn’t prevent all accidents, it makes them less likely to occur than vehicles without it.

self-driving car was put to the test on a Melbourne motorway which was closed for maintenance. As workers did overnight maintenance along three kilometres of the EastLink freeway on February 10, the selfdriving car, which is permitted to be used under a two-year trial, was put through its paces in a traffic simulation. The results of the test were revealed on Friday and EastLink says the vehicle successfully stopped itself during a traffic jam simulation, adjusted its speed and maintained a safe distance from other cars.

VIC STUDENT CREATES PHYSIO ‘SMART SOCKS’

P

hysiotherapists may soon be able to treat remote patients with a new form of wearable technology dubbed “smart socks”. Developed by University of

Melbourne PhD candidate Deepti Aggarwal, the socks send information on weight distribution, foot orientation and range of movement to physiotherapists who treat

patients through video consultations. “Lower limb movements are difficult to understand over video, the movements are so subtle,” said the computer science student, who submitted her thesis last week. The smart socks were trialled with three patients and a physiotherapist at the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne, between February and June 2017 and they were an instant hit. “When I was trialling these socks, the patients wanted to take the socks home and

physiotherapists wanted to use them with other patients,” Ms Aggarwal told AAP. Three sensors are embedded in the socks that patients wear while performing exercises as a webinterface displays the data in real time for physiotherapists. The socks, which cost $300 to make, are not available for sale. But Ms Aggarwal has called on wearable technology companies to give her a call and consider mass producing them, thereby reducing the price. “My hope is that someone takes this system and takes it to the market,” she said. “There are many more dimensions we can explore - it can be beneficial for foot injuries, even for elderly people.” The technology could also be used for pregnant women who can’t regularly travel for face-toface care, she said. “(It’s) not a replacement for face-to-face consultations, rather they’re the next best solution to support patients in critical situations such as those with severe pain and mobility issues.”

Bon Jovi into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

English brothers Mark and David Knopfler from Dire Straits,

WILL FERRELL HOSPITALISED AFTER CAR CRASH

A B

on Jovi has reunited with former members Richie Sambora and Alec John Such for a powerful performance as the band earned a spot in the prestigious Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Jon Bon Jovi, Sambora and Such were joined by current bandmates David Bryan, Tico Torres and Hugh McDonald at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland, on Saturday night where the Rock Hall is based. They performed crowd favourites like You Give Love a Bad Name and It’s My Life. Sambora left Bon Jovi in 2013

and Such in 1994. Each of the members spoke onstage, giving thanks for the honour and telling old stories about the New Jersey band. They all hugged as a group afterward. Jon Bon Jovi said he has been writing his Rock Hall speech for years. “Some days I write the ‘Thank you’ speech, sometimes I write the ‘(Expletive) you’ speech,” he said. “In the end, it’s all about time. It took a lot of people to get us here tonight.” They were inducted by Howard Stern, who provided many laughs at the event. He even sang some

STEVIE RAY 1951 FENDER FETCHES $US250,000

T

he electric guitar that blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan used in his first studio recording and early performances has fetched $US250,000 ($A350,000) at auction in his hometown of Dallas. Heritage Auction spokesman Eric Bradley says the winning bidder for the 1951 Fender at Sunday’s auction doesn’t wish to be identified immediately. Vaughan biographer Craig Hopkins said last week that Vaughan’s first professional-grade guitar has considerable

historical significance, noting the bluesman “pretty much learned his craft on” it. It was a gift from his brother Jimmie Vaughan in the late 1960s. “Jimbo” is carved on the back. Hopkins says Stevie Ray Vaughan, who traded the guitar away in 1971, mentioned in a 1989 interview how much he’d like to have it back.

of Wanted Dead or Alive, getting the audience to join in. Bon Jovi has sold more than 130 million albums. The 33rd annual Rock Hall ceremony kicked off with a tribute to Tom Petty, who died in October at 66. The Killers earned a loud applause from the audience when they started performing American Girl, then transitioning to Free Fallin’. “Pay some rock ‘n’ roll respect ... to the eternal Tom Petty,” frontman Brandon Flowers said, as photos of Petty were displayed in the background. The Cars and four first-time nominees, including Nina Simone, Dire Straits, The Moody Blues and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, also are being inducted as the 2018 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class.

ctor Will Ferrell was taken to the hospital following a crash in Aliso Viejo, according to the California Highway Patrol. Ferrell was a passenger in an SUV that was sideswiped on the northbound I-5 at 10.55pm local time on Thursday. Video footage from the scene showed Ferrell talking on a mobile phone while being loaded into an ambulance. The actor was not seriously hurt, his representative told TMZ. One person was taken to hospital in critical condition, according to the the Orange County Fire Authority, which said two others, like Ferrell, suffered minor injuries. Ferrell was one of three passengers in the chauffeurdriven SUV, which was returning from a “Funny or Die” event in San Diego. Ferrell appeared as Ron Burgundy from the movie Anchorman.

didn’t attend the event, according to bassist John Illsley who said of Mark , “It just didn’t appeal to him, and I appealed to him on several occasions”.

HUEY LEWIS LOSES HEARING AND CANCELS SHOWS

H

uey Lewis And The News have been forced to cancel all their upcoming live shows after the band’s frontman lost his hearing. Lewis, 67, said he hopes he will be able to perform again one day but has axed all 2018 performances. A statement on the band’s website and Twitter account, said: “Two-and-a-half months

ago, just before a show in Dallas, I lost most of my hearing. “Although I can still hear a little, one on one, and on the phone, I can’t hear music well enough to sing. The lower frequencies distort violently making it impossible to find pitch. “I’ve been to the House Ear Institute, the Stanford Ear Institute, and the Mayo Clinic, hoping to find an answer.

Electrifying Escapism:

G

enesis unveiled its groundbreaking Essentia Concept at the New York International Auto Show. The all-electric, high-performance concept elevates and reimagines the “Athletic Elegance” design paradigm, while providing a vision of future Genesis product performance and technology. “We understand our obligation as a luxury car manufacturer to create objects of desire, sparking passion and inspiration by emphasising a culture while exceeding expectations in terms of technology and connectivity, bringing our outside world seamlessly to the inside of the vehicle,” said Manfred Fitzgerald, Global Head of the Genesis Brand. “This is what the Genesis Essentia Concept is all about, and we are thrilled to introduce our interpretation of an all-electric, two-door Gran Turismo here in New York.” Essentia is the brand’s first battery electric vehicle and features a lightweight carbonfibre monocoque, a robust, multimotor electric powertrain, and a custom-tailored interior. Essentia is the brand’s initial concept for a true GT car and challenges the status quo as the ultimate manifestation of Genesis design and engineering. As a capable, thrilling sports car designed to counter the complexities of a modern lifestyle, Essentia offers serenity, clarity, and beauty. “The Genesis Essentia concept defines our vision for an electric Gran Turismo that integrates Athletic Elegance and Genesis DNA as defining parameters,” said Executive Vice President Luc Donckerwolke, Head of Genesis Design. “A Gran Turismo typology highlights our ambition as a luxurious car brand for the connoisseurs and it is the perfect base to project our DNA in the future.”

future. For those moments when knowing what’s ahead is critical, Essentia features advanced vehicle-to-infrastructure and vehicle-to-vehicle technology. Essentia can inform the driver of up-to-the-minute road conditions, and help avoid accidents and traffic jams. Further to that, instead of simply providing the quickest or most efficient route, Essentia uses machine learning intelligence to recommend routes based on driver inclination. And when the route is chosen, Essentia automatically tailors the driving character to its owner’s preference for that road. From seat position to powertrain performance and audiophile system to chassis settings, the joy of the journey deserves technology to match. Essentia also integrates with smart homes and devices, offering situation-based, personalised recommendations. Entirely customisable, the system also allows Essentia to connect seamlessly with the driver’s smart home systems to preprogram HVAC settings, turn on lights, allow for package deliveries, and automatically take the stress out of mundane tasks. AI also plays a critical role in the technological capabilities of Essentia. Voice recognition and the next-generation Genesis Intelligent Assistant allow for two-way dialogue and full vehicle control through voice command, as well as individual driving behavior analysis and driver mood determination. Essentia can transact mobile payments through its center screen, making electronic payments possible for all kinds of situations. Anzac Day

25 April 2018

Lest We Forget

WO1 Frank Wittman A

nzac Day is a time for the community to come together to remember and recognise the service and sacrifice of members of the Australian Defence Force. Originally a commemoration of the landing of Australian and New Zealand forces on Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, Anzac Day is a public expression of gratitude and reflection resonates to the present day. This year will see the Anzac Day March led for the first time by men and women who served in recent conflicts, embodying the enduring nature of the Anzac spirit. We invite everyone to come to the Shrine on Anzac Day and be a part of this special commemoration. 6AM DAWN SERVICE All are welcome at the rising of the sun to commemorate the service and sacrifice of Australian service men and women. One minute of silence will be observed. Recommended arrival between 4am – 5am.

DETERMINED TO SERVE We Will Defend the Motherland to the Last Man and the Last Shilling. When these fighting words were splashed across the front pages of newspapers by the Australian press, there was no shortage of men willing to volunteer to serve King and Empire: men from the city and the bush; men from rich and poor backgrounds; labourers, tradesmen and professionals—men of every size and shape answered their country’s call. In Melbourne, a young man took his place at the head of the queue. The recruiting sergeant stood to address the volunteer who could barely be seen over the desk. The sergeant looked down at the man and said, ‘Sorry lad, you’re a bit too short for us’.

9AM ANZAC DAY MARCH Thousands of veterans, their descendants and current serving personnel will march down St Kilda Road, starting at the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Streets and concluding at the Shrine of Remembrance. Unit wreaths will be laid at the Shrine progressively during the March. COMMEMORATIVE SERVICE At the conclusion of the March a service will take place on the Shrine Forecourt, including an Address from the Governor of Victoria. HOURS OF OPERATION Please note that following the conclusion of the Dawn Service admittance to the Visitor Centre is from 7am. Sanctuary: 6.45am – 7.45am and 2.30pm – 5pm Visitor Centre and Galleries: 7am – 5pm Guided tours: unavailable FEATURED EXHIBITIONS

The Light Horse: Australians in the Middle East 1916–1918 In the East Gallery This exhibition explores the myths and realities of the fighting on the desserts of Sinai, Palestine and Syria. Featuring paintings by George Lambert, Sidney Nolan and Susan McMinn and personal memorabilia of Lieutenant General Harry Chauvel. For Humanity In the West Gallery Discover the stories of Australian doctors, nurses, medics and patients, from the Korean War to Afghanistan. They speak of what it means to save lives amidst death and destruction, and of the courage required to uphold humanity in the face of trauma and suffering. to hospital, is talking and under assessment after his early bang this afternoon,” Northampton posted on their official Twitter account. The club provided another update on Sunday evening. “The 28-year-old Australian is receiving specialist treatment to his right arm and will continue to be assessed to determine the extent of his injury,” a statement read. “He wishes to send his thanks to everyone at Leicester Royal Infirmary and for the messages of support he and his family

have received.” Northampton won the Premiership contest 27-21. Horne, who has played 34 times for the Wallabies, joined the Saints last year after 101 Super Rugby games for the NSW Waratahs.

SAINTS MUST FIND AFL FORM FAST: RICHARDSON

S

t Kilda need to find some AFL form and they need to find it fast. That was coach Alan Richardson’s frank assessment after the injuryhit Saints fell to a 15.13 (103) to 7.14 (56) defeat to Geelong at Kardinia Park on Sunday. St Kilda are 16th with a 1-3 record after four rounds and have lost their past three games by an average margin of 49 points. Richardson knows that doesn’t cut it for a team with finals aspirations and a fan base growing more impatient by the week. “We’ve got too many players out of form,” Richardson said. “We’re at round four and I’m not saying we’ve got plenty of time to turn it around - we need to turn things around quickly. “And that’s our focus. “We’re not playing our best footy and we’re not pretending for one minute that we are and that we’re ( just) out of luck. “We need to make sure that we’ve got blokes in a really constructive, aggressive head space. “There’s enough talent in this group to be playing much better footy than we’re playing at the minute.” The Saints lost Dylan Roberton in a frightening second quarter incident on Sunday where he collapsed without contact from an opponent. But Richardson reported the defender was doing well at Geelong’s Epworth Hospital where he is undergoing tests. “It looks like some sort of irregular heartbeat ... (but) from all reports he’s alert and he’s eating,” Richardson said. “He’s doing well but it’s obviously a bit of a shock. He shocked a few of his mates but he’s doing well, which is positive. “I’ve never really seen anything like that so my thoughts were immediately with (him). “But it was really comforting to get some feedback that he’s OK now.” St Kilda were left with two fit players on the bench in the second half after ruckman Rowan Marshall was ruled out with concussion.

POSITION VACANT

Who Will Be Australia’s Next Cricket Coach? JUSTIN LANGER Long been earmarked as Lehmann’s successor. Most people expected the baton to be passed after the 2019 Ashes, but the cheating scandal has thrown the plans of Cricket Australia (CA) into chaos. The former Test opener coached the national side when Lehmann skipped an ODI tour of the West Indies in 2016, while he has mentored Western Australia in recent years. Once described the role of coach - when it comes to managing behaviour - as a mix of policeman, headmaster, parent and mate. RICKY PONTING CA has long wanted the nation’s all-time leading runscorer to coach more, but Ponting has been reluctant to spend time away from his young family in recent years. Lehmann’s outpouring of emotion after he and and his family “copped a lot of abuse over the last week” may do little to change that mindset. The former skipper has been floated as the nation’s Twenty20 coach, having done a stellar job in a couple of short-term consultant stints plus won an Indian Premier League title with Mumbai. The current

Former test cricketer Justin Langer

crisis may prompt James Sutherland to split the job in two and appoint a red-ball coach and white-ball coach, an idea Lehmann flagged last year.

JASON GILLESPIE Coached the Adelaide Strikers to their maiden Big Bash League title earlier this year, while he has also served as a consultant coach for CA in the past. The former Test paceman, who played alongside Lehmann at both South Australia and Australia, recently insisted he has every intention to honour a three-year deal with English side Sussex. Lehmann’s resignation may force a rethink from Gillespie, who went close before ultimately losing to Trevor Bayliss in the race to be England’s new coach on the eve of the 2015 Ashes.

TREVOR BAYLISS Contracted to coach England until 2019, but could come up in discussions - especially if there is a white-ball gig to fill. England were smashed 4-0 in the recent Ashes, but belted Australia 4-1 in the ensuing ODI series and are set to be World Cup favourites when they host the tournament next year. The Goulburn-raised coach is highly respected by by many Australians in the Test XI, having mentored NSW and the Sydney Sixers in the past.

Zealand. If Sutherland wants to go down that path then he should call the man in charge of that team. Hesson never played first-class cricket but worked his way up the coaching ranks and was appointed by New Zealand Cricket in 2012, shortly after resigning as coach of Kenya because of security issues. One problem is NZ’s longest-serving cricket coach is contracted until next year’s World Cup.

ANIL KUMBLE The former legspinner was appointed coach of his homeland in 2016 and played a key role in India’s 19-Test undefeated streak and associated hold on the world MIKE HESSON No.1 ranking. Axed in 2017 Lehmann suggested his because captain Virat Kohli side, desperate to clean up wanted him out. Kumble’s their image and win over the 619 Test wickets says plenty Australian public, could do a lot about his cricket brain. Hiring one of the protagonists in the worse than behaving like New

‘monekygate’ saga would upset a lot of people and is unlikely to considered, but he’d be a handy trump card to play when India arrive in Australia for a fourTest series later this year. DAVID SAKER The side’s bowling coach filled in as head coach during an ODI tour of India last year. Lacks the profile of some of the other names on this list, but has previously made it clear he would one day love to take the reins.

BRAD HADDIN The former wicketkeeper has been Australia’s fielding coach for a tick over six months. Almost certainly hasn’t served a long enough apprenticeship to get the top job, but his coaching skills are well regarded by many and - as the past week has proved - anything can happen.

MCGREGOR NO LONGER CHAMPION UFC OFFICIALLY STRIPS MCGREGOR OF TITLE C

AUSSIE TO TAKE ON HOLLY HOLM IN UFC M

egan Anderson will fight on the same card as fellow Australian and world champion Robert Whittaker, when she makes her UFC debut against former women’s bantamweight title holder Holly Holm. Anderson, who hails from the Gold Coast, but is now based in the United States, was scheduled to make her debut against Cris Cyborg last July in a featherweight world title fight, but withdrew for personal reasons. However, she has now landed on UFC 225 in Chicago in June, when Whittaker will make his first middleweight world title

defence against Cuban Yoel Romero, the man he won the interim title against last year. Holm’s career has gone into a tailspin since she sensationally toppled bantamweight world champion and American compatriot Ronda Rousey in Melbourne In November 2015. She lost the title in her first defence, one of four defeats in her past five fights. However, she did go the full fiveround distance in her most recent fight last December against Brazil’s featherweight world champion Cyborg, and is still the No.1 contender in that division. Anderson has an 8-2 MMA record.

onor McGregor has been stripped of the UFC lightweight championship. The long-expected move was officially announced by UFC President Dana White at a press conference for Saturday’s pay-per-view card at Barclays Center. The Irishman has not fought in the UFC since he won the 155-pound title at UFC 205 in November 2016. McGregor last fought in a boxing bout he lost to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on August 26 last year.a White had refused to strip McGregor of the championship until Wednesday when he discussed the popular fighter’s return to the UFC in 2018. “Conor McGregor is 100 per cent coming back this year,” White said. White said he did not expect McGregor to attend UFC 223 this weekend with the main event between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Max Holloway for the lightweight championship. Nurmagomedov was originally scheduled to fight Tony Ferguson. Holloway already holds the 145-pound featherweight belt, and moved up to 155 pounds on less than one week’s

notice. Ferguson had been the 155-pound interim champion in McGregor’s absence and remained the No.1 contender in the division. “We’re not stripping Tony Ferguson,” White said. “Tony Ferguson isn’t being stripped. “The only one that’s losing a belt here is Conor. Conor is losing the belt. “These two are fighting for the belt.” Once the fight starts, McGregor will no longer be champion and the need for the interim belt will go away; leaving the winner as the true 155-pound champ. Ferguson and Nurmagomedov had been booked to fight each other four times, with all falling through. White was hesitant to book a fifth fight between the duo but could be forced to should Nurmagomedov claim the UFC belt. “It’s the last fight on earth that I want to make again,” White said. “However, this thing plays out on Saturday, we’ll go from there. “Tony is still the No. 1 ranked guy in the world either way, no matter who wins. “I’ll deal with that when it’s time to deal with it.”

RICCIARDO D

aniel Ricciardo made a string of thrilling overtaking moves to snatch a surprise Chinese Grand Prix victory on Sunday after a safety car strategy gamble by his Red Bull team paid off handsomely. The Australian, who started from sixth on the grid after almost missing qualifying, made the most of fresher tyres to finish 8.8 seconds ahead of Valtteri Bottas in a Mercedes. “I don’t seem to win boring races,” he grinned from the podium, before chugging the champagne from his racing boot in a trademark ‘shoey’. “They are all pretty fun but that was unexpected.” Kimi Raikkonen took third place for Ferrari but title contenders Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel both endured trying afternoons, the four times world champions ending up fourth and eighth respectively. “I was in no-man’s land today,” said Hamilton. “I had no pace.” Vettel, who won the first two races of the season for Ferrari, saw his lead over Hamilton slashed from 17 points to nine. The German’s race unravelled spectacularly, a collision with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen dropping him down the order, after the pre-race favourite had initially made a good start from pole and held the early lead. Verstappen had a 10-second penalty applied post-race for causing the collision, dropping the Dutch youngster from fourth to fifth. Vettel was also passed by the McLaren of Fernando Alonso two laps from the end.

Ricciardo’s mechanics had performed a minor miracle to change a blown engine after practice on Saturday, getting him out just in time during the first phase of qualifying. “Putting ourselves 24 hours ago, I thought we might be starting at the back of the grid,” he said. “Today is the real reward for that work.” Sunday’s win was Ricciardo’s first since a chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix last June, his sixth overall and it also broke Mercedes’ Shanghai stranglehold, with the champions having won the last six races there. Mercedes are yet to win this year, the first time since the turbo hybrid era started in 2014 that

Toro Rosso pair Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley collided and left debris on track, swung the race Red Bull’s way. Bottas was in the lead at that stage ahead of Vettel, having overhauled the German during the pitstops, while Verstappen was fourth and Ricciardo sixth. Red Bull pulled both their cars into the pits, ‘double-stacking’ them and bolting a set of fresh soft tyres on each. The advantage of fresh tyres allowed Verstappen and Ricciardo to scythe through the field. “The safety car was so unlucky for us,” exclaimed Bottas over the

The Dutchman ran wide and dropped back behind Ricciardo when trying to pass Hamilton and later spun his Red Bull and Vettel’s Ferrari while attempting to pass the German for third -- an error he owned up to afterwards. Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg finished sixth for Renault, ahead of Alonso whose aggressive overtaking move on Vettel was ‘noted’ by stewards. Spaniard Carlos Sainz was ninth for Renault with Kevin Magnussen rounding out the top 10 for Haas.

COACH PAUL GREEN RE-SIGNS WITH COWBOYS

reshly-signed for another three seasons, Paul Green is confident there can be plenty of success ahead for North Queensland in the post-Johnathan Thurston era. Green ended months of speculation about his coaching future on Monday by opting to remain in Townsville until at least the end of the 2021 season. He was linked to a possible move to Brisbane but will stay on a new deal which is reportedly worth almost $1 million a season. My intention was to stay so to have that worked out has been great,” Green said on Monday. “The last few years have been incredible for everyone and I’ve really enjoyed it, but the job’s not finished yet.” The 45-year-old has taken the club to the finals for every year of his tenure, which started in 2014, including grand finals in 2015 and 2017, winning the premiership in 2015. That successful era has been achieved with superstar playmaker Johnathan Thurston at the club although he missed most of last

DUFTY’S SIZZLING FEET HAVE DRAGONS FIRING season with injury - but he’s set to retire at the end of this season. And this season has started badly with the club posting just one win in the first six rounds to be above only the beleagured Eels (6-0) on the ladder. But Green believed the club had plenty more to look forward to and he hoped his decision to stay would encourage other key players to do likewise. “I think there’s still plenty for us to achieve over the next few years ... so I’m really looking forward to the next lot of challenges,” Green said. Green was rumoured to have been sounded out as a potential replacement for Broncos mentor Wayne Bennett. But he said he was never officially approached by a rival club, adamant he wasn’t tempted to leave the Cowboys.

unbeaten start to the NRL season. He sits second on the league’s try-scoring tally with six and while he admits his size could be a weakness he says that’s balanced out by his pace.

Storm NRL star Slater no diver: Kaufusi M

elbourne’s Felise Kaufusi has defended superstar NRL teammate Billy Slater against allegations of diving. Kaufusi told reporters on Monday Slater has the game’s best interests at heart and wouldn’t want to do anything cheap like that. His comments came after greats Brad Fittler and Peter Sterling took Slater to task on Sunday after two similar incidents in the last three rounds when he took a quick tap then tumbled to the ground following minimal contact and the opposing player was sin binned. “I don’t like it. It’s kind of embarrassing in a way,”

Sterling said. “We criticise other sports for other incidents. “There’s gamesmanship and there’s gamesmanship and to me that’s going to a level I don’t want to see.” Kaufusi was unaware of the criticism but he was quick to leap to his teammate’s defence. “I’m sure Billy doesn’t do that on purpose ... given the circumstances of the game it might have looked worse than it was,” Kaufusi said.

“Billy’s a great player, he’s got the best interests of the game (at heart). “He doesn’t want to be doing anything cheap like that, so I’m not sure what you put (that criticism) down to. “I’m sure Billy Slater doesn’t have that in his head or go out there to deliberately make something like that happen.”

ROCKLIFF T WILL COME GOOD AT POWER: HINKLEY

here’s no panic at Port Adelaide about Tom Rockliff’s early-season form or the club’s own effort after their first loss of the season, a 22-point defeat to Essendon. Rockliff endured another disappointing day in a Power guernsey, gathering just eight touches at Etihad Stadium on Sunday. Coach Ken Hinkley says the former Brisbane captain was struggling

with a calf injury throughout the afternoon. “He was sore after the first quarter ... he did a manful job for us to hobble around out there as best he could,” he said. Rockliff’s output has nosedived since moving from the Lions to South Australia. The midfield ball magnet averaged at least 24 possessions in his past seven seasons in Queensland but he’s had half that in four games for Port.

Kennedy cool as West Coast record looms W

est Coast forward Josh Kennedy admits he momentarily forgot all about his impending goalkicking record, but says it will be a special moment when he achieves it. Kennedy has booted 513 goals for the Eagles, and needs just two more majors to overtake Peter Sumich for the most goals kicked at West Coast. The 30-year-old will have the chance to break Sumich’s mark in Saturday’s AFL clash with Carlton at the MCG. Kennedy missed the first three rounds of the season following foot surgery. But he returned with a bang last week, booting 5.3 in West Coast’s 80-point win over Gold Coast. Kennedy was unaware he came close to equalling Sumich’s mark in that game until afterwards. “I totally forgot about it until someone came up after the game and said I just needed one more to equal it,” Kennedy said. “It’s not something I’ve really been thinking about. But I actually had a call from Suma about a month ago saying, ‘What’s all this about you breaking my record?’ “It would be something pretty special and close to my heart and something that I would feel really honoured and privileged about if I do get it.”

Sumich had legions of fans during his glittering 150-game career, but Kennedy wasn’t one of them. Kennedy grew up a Collingwood supporter, adoring the likes of Nathan Buckley and Scott Burns. The key forwards he admired the most were Brisbane legend Jonathan Brown and former St Kilda star Nick Riewoldt. But Sumich ended up having a huge impact on Kennedy’s career during his stint as an assistant at West Coast under coach John Worsfold. “He was my forward line coach early on in my career, and he really shaped me into the player I am today,” Kennedy said of Sumich. “He’s such a wise man in terms of a football sense and just life in general. I can’t thank him enough for what he’s done for my career.” Kennedy heaped praise on fellow Eagles forward Jack Darling, who has taken his game to another level this year. Darling has booted 12.2 in the opening four rounds, with his marking ability proving crucial in West Coast’s 3-1 start to the season. “He’s got that dominance and presence on the ground now,” Kennedy said. “It’s been something we wanted for a while, and it’s finally here. “It’s great to see him pushing into that next level of his game.”

A bumper crowd of 90,000 is likely at the MCG, buoyed by improved performances by both Collingwood - who defeated Adelaide on the road on Friday and the Bombers. It’s just the fifth time in 24 stagings of the marquee fixture that both teams enter the match off the back of a win. Smith, a native Victorian, said he couldn’t wait to play in front of the biggest crowd of his career after leaving membership minnows GWS. “I’m pumped. I’ve tried not to think about it until now but I’m sure over the next 10 days I’ll be thinking about it a lot,” he said. “Anzac Day is a real bonus (to joining Essendon). “I’m enjoying my football again. My last 18 months at the Giants I wasn’t enjoying my footy. “It’s good to come home and have a better balance in my life.”

Smith to savour AFL crowd on

ANZAC DAY

A

fter moving on from an “embarrassing” AFL display by beating Port Adelaide, Essendon’s tackle machine Devon Smith says he’s raring to play in his first Anzac Day clash. The firstseason Bomber was one of a host to impress in their 22-point defeat of the Power on Sunday. Smith had a gamehigh 11 tackles, bringing the energy to the club that was

lacking against the Western Bulldogs a week earlier. The former Giant said it forced the club to confront some hard truths - but brought the right result. “Last week we were pretty embarrassing,” he told AAP. “As individuals at the club we looked at each other and we didn’t sugar-coat it. “We knew our effort wasn’t there and our defensive side of the game was embarrassing but worked at it through the week and we beat Port, who were 3-0. It’s great.” Smith hailed the contribution of fellow recruit Jake Stringer, who had four goals as the game’s most dominant attacker. But he warned it wouldn’t

be all smooth sailing with the ex-Bulldog - who he predicted would see plenty of midfield time in future despite his improved output up forward. “Jakey’s one of those players. He’s going to have days like today and he’s going to have days where he has eight disposals and not kick a goal,” he said. “As long as he plays his defensive side of the game and builds his tank, I reckon instead of being 80:20 forward-midfield (split), he might go the other way or 50:50. “He’s a strength of ours and they saw today how hard it is
