Attack ‘the stuff of nightmares’: judge

A

young Melbourne mother was “terrified, disgusted and panicked” when she woke in her bed to find a stranger kissing and biting her as her baby slept nearby. In what a judge called “the stuff of nightmares”, she felt “aggressive kissing on her lips, neck and face” and touching in the genital area. Half-asleep, she resisted the advances from the man she thought was her partner about 3am on the morning of July 24. It was only when he didn’t stop that she reached out, felt his hair and begun to scream. Photos tendered in the Victorian County Court show bruising to her face and neck as a result of the assault.

Lang Kouth, 21, has been jailed for the aggravated burglary, during which he sexually assaulted the new mother. He pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary, sexual assault and theft. He had entered the home, drunk, looking for keys to a car he intended to steal. Then he went into the bedroom, removed his shoes and climbed into bed with the victim and her partner. The couple’s 17-month-baby was asleep on a mattress at the foot of the bed during the attack. In jailing Kouth for four years and four months on Tuesday, Victorian County Court Judge Michael Tinney said it was not hard to

VIC FATAL BURGLARY DUO FIGHT TO AVOID JAIL

T

wo accomplices to a Victorian home invasion where a man was ambushed in his bed, bashed and stabbed to death, should be spared a jail sentence, their defence claims. Andrew David Lacey and Edward Charles Hewett, both 23, went along to the robbery in which Garry Coulson was assaulted with a baseball bat and stabbed 21 times. The young butchers joined their former supervisor Daniel Nathan Parry, who attacked the 30-year-old Mr Coulson in the invasion at his Werribee home last year, believing he had stolen from him. The 37-year-old Parry got 19 years jail for murder earlier this month, but a murder charge against the two young men was dropped. On Tuesday, Lacey and Hewett each pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary and intentionally causing injury. Their barristers told the Victorian Supreme Court each had spent 405 days in custody while on remand and should not be sentenced to more jail.

Hewett’s barrister David Hallowes SC said his client was immature, easily led and had gone into the home unarmed. He described Hewett as an outcast at school who had been stood over in jail. “He has done a significant period of time already in jail,” Mr Hallowes told Justice Christopher Beale. Lacey’s barrister Tim Marsh said he went along to the robbery, believing it would involve a “punch-on”. He said his client’s role was minor and he understood he had to “keep the peace” by keeping Mr Coulson’s girlfriend quiet while Parry confronted Mr Coulson. Lacey, who was on a community corrections order at the time, “should have known better” than to get involved but his life was unravelling at the time from a series of bad decisions, Mr Marsh said. However, the prosecution argued the trio agreed to go to Mr Coulson’s house to injure him. The case was adjourned to December 8.

imagine the acute sense of vulnerability the victim must have felt. “Not even her half-asleep resistance deterred you,” Judge Tinney said to Kouth. “You persisted in touching her. “Thank goodness her partner was there.” The victim’s partner chased Kouth from the house. He got in their car and sped away, reaching speeds of 160km/h in an 80km/h zone. He clipped a tree, then a pole, and fled on foot but was later caught and arrested by police. Judge Tinney said the assault was extraordinary. “Waking up in the middle of the night in one’s own bed next to one’s own partner

with a baby in the room and finding that a complete stranger is in the bed and upon the person ... it’s the stuff of nightmares.” Kouth had not initially entered the house with the intent to assault, adding he “can’t have been thinking right.” Judge Tinney said he was anxious about the man’s youth and the “potentially corrupting influence of an adult prison”. But it was important the court said a “loud and clear message” that it would not tolerate attacks on sleeping or vulnerable women. “You should be ashamed of yourself,” Judge Tinney said. Kouth must serve at least two years and three months before he is eligible for parole.

BIKERS HELP STRANDED SPRINGSTEEN

C

oming across Bruce Springsteen on a broken down motorcycle on the side of the road could probably be a lyric from one of his songs, but it really happened for a group of guys from New Jersey. A group from the Freehold American Legion was riding after a Veterans Day event on Friday when they pulled over to help a stranded motorcyclist who turned out to be The Boss. Ryan Bailey says Springsteen hopped on the back of his bike and they

headed to a local bar while he waited for a ride. Dan Barkalow says Springsteen was down to earth and they “talked about motorcycles and his old Freehold days”. Springsteen was raised in Freehold and still lives in New Jersey. The legion post says Springsteen is eligible to join since his father was a veteran.

Orthodox abuse reports discouraged-inquiry

S

ome members of the Orthodox Jewish communities in Sydney and Melbourne have been discouraged from reporting child sexual abuse, a royal commission says. The child abuse royal commission said the evidence strongly suggests that because of the way Jewish law concepts were applied, some members of the Yeshiva Bondi and Yeshivah Melbourne communities were discouraged from reporting abuse. There was a marked absence of supportive leadership for victims and their families in Yeshivah Melbourne although it has taken significant steps to implement child protection measures, the commission said in findings published on Tuesday.

Pollen grains absorbed moisture during the evening thunderstorms and then burst into hundreds of tiny allergenic fragments, which are small enough to penetrate deep into the airways. Ambulance Victoria had a full day’s emergency calls crammed into just five hours when the storm hit. The Inspector-General for Emergency Management is leading a review examining how Ambulance Victoria and emergency services responded and how the community was notified. The review will also investigate the deaths.

FISHERMAN’S

SHARK CATCH

BITES BACK

P

aramedics say a shark has bitten back after a Victorian fisherman hauled him into his boat. They say the 73-year-old man was fishing alone in his boat off Queenscliff this morning when he landed the 1.5 metre gill shark, which then bit his right hand and arm. The injured angler used a towel to control the bleeding and steered his boat two kilometres back to the marina, and has been flown to Melbourne’s The Alfred hospital in a stable condition.

LEANING TOWER SEEN SINKING

FROM SPACE

E

ngineers in San Francisco have tunnelled underground to try and understand the sinking of the 58-story Millennium Tower. Now comes an analysis from space. The European Space Agency has released detailed data from satellite imagery that shows the skyscraper in San Francisco’s financial district is continuing to sink at a steady rate - and perhaps faster than previously thought. The luxury high-rise that opened its doors in 2009 has been dubbed the Leaning Tower of San Francisco. It has sunk about 40 centimetres into landfill and is tilting several inches to the northwest.

A dispute over the building’s construction in the seismically active city has spurred numerous lawsuits involving the developer, the city and owners of its multimillion dollar apartments. Engineers have estimated the building is sinking at a rate of about 2.5cm per year. The Sentinel-1 twin satellites show almost double that rate based on data collected from April 2015 to September 2016. The satellite data shows the Millennium Tower sunk 40 to 45 mm over a recent one-year period and almost double that amount - 70 to 75 mm over its 17-month observation period, said Petar Marinkovic, founder and chief scientist of PPO Labs which analysed the

satellite’s radar imagery for the ESA along with Norwaybased research institute Norut. “What can be concluded from our data, is that the Millennium Tower is sinking at a steady rate,” Marinkovic said in a telephone interview from The Hague,

Netherlands. The Sentinel-1 study is not focused on the Millennium Tower but is part of a larger mission by the European Space Agency tracking urban ground movement around the world, and particularly subsidence “hotspots” in Europe.

KANYE WEST ‘STILL NOT STABLE’ K

anye West has reportedly not yet received the green light to return home a week after he was hospitalised. According to TMZ, the plan was to release West on Monday. However, the report says that the rapper is “still not stable,” and a release date hasn’t been set yet. West’s management did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Details on the hospitalisation have not yet been released, but TMZ reports that West suffered from a breakdown and is struggling with extreme paranoia. West was hospitalised on November 21, after the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call of a disturbance and discovered a “medical emergency” upon arrival. West was transferred to the hospital by paramedics later that day. West last week abruptly cancelled the remaining 21 dates on his Saint

Pablo tour. Earlier this month, he made headlines for statements he made during stops on the tour, including stirring up controversy for saying that he if he did vote in the election, he would have voted for President-elect Donald Trump. Following his statement about Trump, West also appeared 90 minutes late to his Sacramento show, and ended it early after launching into a rant about Beyonce, Jay Z, Mark Zuckerberg, Google, and more.

SLOW INTERNET GRIPES RISING

S

luggish internet speeds are driving more complaints from Australians than those about patchy mobile services. Internet-related complaints to the industry ombudsman have hit a five-year high, surging by more than a fifth between July 2015 and June 2016. More than 112,000 new complaints were lodged with the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman during the year about landline, mobile and internet services. Complaints about mobile services fell by more than a quarter to their lowest level in nine years, but it was a

different story for internet services with complaints up 22 per cent. “Consumers told us that slow data speed was the biggest problem with internet services,” Ombudsman Judi Jones said on Thursday. “New complaints about internet data speed increased by 48 per cent.” Complaints about the NBN more than doubled during the year and made up 12 per cent of the total complaints lodged with the ombudsman. “Delays in connections to the network, faults including unusable services, and dropout of services were regularly reported, which is of

concern,” Ms Jones said. But she said the number of complaints were not growing at the same rate NBN was adding customers. Despite the jump in internet-related complaints, most issues raised with the ombudsman still concerned mobile services, which accounted for more than a third of all complaints. “Complaints about mobile services have reduced due to better product offerings from telcos including higher data allowances and increased investment in mobile infrastructure,” said Ms Jones.

Across landlines, mobiles and internet services the main reasons for complaints were billing, customer service, faults, complaint handling and contracts.

ROBOT STRIPPER AT SEXPO T

he man behind a stripper robot that’s pole dancing in Melbourne insists he would never like to see cyborgs replace people. With its body made from shop mannequin parts, windscreen wipers that move its joints and a CCTV camera for a head, the dancing cyborg encapsulates the futuristic theme at this year’s Sexpo in Melbourne. Its maker, Giles Walker, is a kinetic artist who makes robots that deal with different social issues. Although he did not intend for this robot to be solely shown as a sex object, Mr Walker says that it can be interpreted as an empowered stripper. “By placing the CCTV on the body of a pole dancer I am

looking at the relationship of voyeurism and power,” Mr Walker told AAP. “Is she (the stripper) the one with the power, or is it the people watching her?”. Mr Walker says he has no interest in seeing robotics replace people but he doesn’t believe the world is far away from introducing cyborgs for sex with humans. He worries when that happens some dark issues could surface. “If people can get used to the idea that they can do whatever they want to it without responsibility then it leads to a very dangerous area,” he said. Sexpo spokesman Bentleigh Gibson says sex tech allows people to explore their

“...INTRODUCING CYBORGS FOR SEX WITH HUMANS”

fantasies in a non-judgmental environment. “I see it as a way where people who have challenges can safely explore what those issues are,” Mr Gibson told AAP. Virtual Reality gaming and adult content, robotics, and sex technology all made up this year’s Feel the Future theme at Sexpo.

OLDER PEOPLE MORE LIKELY TO BE SCAMMED

O

lder people are more likely to be ripped off in online scams, a new study confirms. The Australian Institute of Criminology survey found those aged 45-55 were more likely to be victimised by dating and romance frauds while those aged 65 and over were more likely to be scammed by computer support fraud schemes. Those over 65 were significantly more likely to send money as a result of a fraudulent invitation. The study cites the story of Paul, 72, who used an online dating website following the death of his wife, starting a relationship with a woman named Selina from Ghana. In all, he paid out more than $200,000. Using data from online

surveys of fraud conducted in 2011 and 2012, the AIC examined the experience of 2695 respondents. Almost three quarters of scam approaches came via email, though approaches also came by traditional mail, mobile and landline phone and SMS. Of the 51 who admitted falling victim to work from home fraud, almost a third

were aged 45-54 while 32 were aged 45 or over. Dating fraud claimed 49 victims, 22 aged 45-54 and 36 over 45. The AIC said that may indicate factors such as divorce, a desire to settle down or loneliness. Computer support fraud where scammers claim the person’s computer is infected and require payment for repairs - claimed 49 victims,

with 19 aged over 65. “Targeted, age-specific awareness raising campaigns may be an effective means of reducing the risk of consumer fraud,” the study said. The study found those over 65 were less likely to divulge personal details than those aged under 24 who revealed personal information at higher than expected rates.

He said US retail expert Kathryn Tesija, a director on the Woolworths board, has been providing coaching and insights. The former US Target executive also told shareholders that Amazon was a real threat. “They are a formidable competitor. They will be someone we will take seriously,” Ms Tesija said. Woolworths has the advantage of being an entrenched player in the supermarket business, she added. “Woolies has a number of different stores and the best locations in major cities in the country; and they built that over 91 years which Amazon can’t replicate anytime soon.” Coles and German discount retailer Aldi have declined to say whether they have also set up teams to analyse the potential threat Amazon

would pose. A spokesman for Coles said the group was focused on continuing to deliver competitive food prices, while an Aldi spokesperson said it welcomed competition and was committed to being the price leader. Roy Morgan Research chief executive Michele Levine doubts the arrival of Amazon would spark another price war. “Amazon would target people who are early adopters of technology and can afford to pay the service that solves their problems,” she said. “If Amazon can bring a really good grocery delivery service that gives people what they want, when they want it and they get fresh produce, they can probably charge more for it. “That’s where the wining disruptor will be rather than

cutting margins further.” While the supermarket giants are moving towards online shopping, their technology is still “a bit clunky”, Ms Levine said. “Amazon is definitely an extraordinary company. It’s hungry and it is looking at Australia as a small but affluent market with rich pickings to be had.”

Woolies views Amazon as a real threat

W

oolworths is preparing for the “Amazon threat” by setting up a special team to deal with the online retail giant’s potential arrival in Australia. AmazonFresh, the online supermarket subsidiary of the American e-commerce company, is reportedly planning to launch in Australia as early as next year. Woolworths says it sees Amazon as a serious disrupter, and chairman Gordon Cairns revealed the group has set up a team to look at the “threat”. “We didn’t want to distract people in the supermarket business worrying about how to compete with Coles and Aldi today (with) worrying about Amazon so we have set up a separate unit,” Mr Cairns told the group’s annual general meeting on Thursday.

arrie Fisher has claimed she had an “intense” affair with Harrison Ford during the making of Star Wars. The actress said she had a three-month romance with the Han Solo star - a married father-of-two at the time which she kept secret for 40 years. Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy, told People magazine: “It was so intense. It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend.” Fisher was 19 at the time of the alleged affair in 1976, 14 years younger than Ford, then 33. In an excerpt from her memoir, The Princess Diarist, Fisher said she and Ford spent their first night together following a birthday party for Star Wars director George Lucas. “I looked over at Harrison. A hero’s face - a few strands of hair fell over his noble, slightly furrowed brow,” she wrote. “How could you ask such a shining specimen of a man to be satisfied with the likes

Fisher, Ford ‘had affair’ during Star Wars of me? “I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him. He was kind.” Fisher and Ford reunited on screen in 2015’s Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. In the course of

the original Star Wars trilogy, Fisher and Ford’s characters fall in love. Ford, 74, has been married three times, divorcing his first wife Mary Marquardt in 1979. He separated from his second wife, screenwriter Melissa

Mathison, in 2001 and the couple later divorced. Ford has been married to Ally McBeal actress Calista Flockhart since 2010. Fisher, 60, was previously married to musician Paul Simon.

DYLAN SHUNS NOBEL AWARD CEREMONY B ob Dylan won’t be coming to Stockholm to pick up his 2016 Nobel Prize for literature at the December 10 prize ceremony, the Swedish Academy says. The Academy said on Wednesday that Dylan has told them “he wishes he could receive the prize personally, but other commitments make it

unfortunately impossible”, The 75-year-old American singer-songwriter was awarded the prize on October 13 “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition”. The literature prize and five other Nobel Prizes will be officially conferred upon winners in Stockholm next month on the anniversary

of award founder Alfred Nobel’s death in 1896. The Academy said it “respects Bon Dylan’s decision”, adding it not travelling to the Swedish capital to personally pick up the prestigious award was “unusual, but not exceptional”. Literature laureates have skipped the ceremony before. In 2004, Austrian

playwright and novelist Elfriede Jelinek stayed home, citing a social phobia. “The award is still theirs, as it now belongs to Bob Dylan,” the Academy said. “We are looking forward to Bob Dylan’s Nobel lecture, which he must hold, according to the requirements, within six months” from December 10.

on’t be mistaken, Dallas Frasca is a band and not just named after the lead singer. Like Blondie and PJ Harvey that came before them, it is clear that namesake front woman Dallas and guitarist Jeff Curran are the driving force of the Melbourne based trio, which other members rotate. The unconventional songwriters are two guitars, vocals and a beast behind the kit. They fit somewhere in between blues riffed The Black Keys, and the incredible full-throated wail of Janis Joplin. Having no bass, the drums are integral to the sonic massive-ness that fits in-between the mechanical style riffs, their songs are catchy, huge and you can feel

the truth in their tales. They won Triple J’s Light Your Fuse and then in 2013 they signed to French label, Verygroup (Bjork, Soja, Baby Metal, Gamma Ray) after they gained attention from placing 3rd in the International Songwriting Competition (over 16,000 entries). In 2014 they released their controversial film clip for single, You Are Beautiful that went viral and gained over ¼ million views and appeared on film, Embrace. Their album, Love Army hit the Top 30 ARIA Charts in Australia in 2015, and their song, Success Is The Best Revenge from the 2015 release, was the theme song as the worldwide sync on the popular TV show, Bondi Ink. A collaboration with Ugly Kid Joe was

ARIES This week brings forth a page-turning inspiration in your life, Aries, but you might also feel confused about how to make your dreams a reality. The key is to remain grounded on a balance between logic and intuition.

TAURUS Sparks are flying again when it comes to love. You won’t be alone this coming holiday seasons. Relationships with siblings and friends are also spotlighted this week. Business partnerships are also expected, so don’t take connections for granted. Even if you have some doubts, try joining hands for a small project and see how your energies blend to make it into a grand one. GEMINI Resist the urge to be passive-aggressive or manipulative this week, Gemini. Pick your words wisely if you head into a collision with your loved one and avoid any reason for tension with anyone in the office. Your words tend to pack a punch which could be a bit overwhelming for the other person.

CANCER Sometimes it’s necessary to avoid the truth a bit but it’s not healthy to exaggerate. Small white lies are okay but don’t push things, Cancer. If you want to move ahead in your career, you will have to stick to a certain routine and head straight towards your goal. LEO If you are single, love is peeking at the horizon and this could mean an exciting amorous contact this week. Prepare yourself for a whole load of butterflies in your tummy. Those in a relationship could expect hotter evenings filled with lots of cuddling. VIRGO Your family life gets priority over everything this week. All the work you’ve done last week is finally ready (or as close as it’s going to get) to be unveiled. Your story might be an inspiration for others and encourage them to find the light at the end of their tunnel. LIBRA Relationships are on the spotlights this week. If you are struggling with problems in love, it’s advisable to listen to your intuition. Your heart has something important to tell you. Listen carefully and use it to your advantage, Libra. SCORPIO A useful information will reach your ears and could bring a new light on someone in your life who has been a mystery up until now. Listen closely and unravel the secret. Don’t expect money to fall from the sky, Scorpio. SAGITTARIUS You won’t grow as a person if you keep on using the same trick. Do you know what you urgently need? A new challenge! A rumour stirs up a lot but you’ll quickly discover that it’s all just a storm in a teacup. Talk to the one who started all this. CAPRICORN Don’t keep secrets from a friend or a loved one, Cap. A double life seems attractive but it has big consequences. The planets have laid the groundwork for some exciting new developments. Come up with a new game plan but it doesn’t have to be the sole job of your brain.

PISCES Independence is a very attractive quality and so is confidence, Pisces. These qualities show a potential lover that you’re wo/man full of vigor and zeal, someone they could depend on. However, your independent attitude could also make others feel insecure.

Meet Maggie

It’s not every day you meet a Greyhound like me! With my beautiful cream and brown markings, I always stand out in a crowd. I’ve loved my time here with my friends, but a social girl like me needs change of scenery. Don’t think that just because I am a Greyhound I’ll be running laps around you. My racing days are over and I much prefer to take it easy. I enjoy the finer things in life, nice cushy couches, great friends, hopefully a treat or two! Will you be the one to finally take me home? The new car will compete under Daytona Prototype international (DPi) rules in the Prototype class, the top level of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. After significant on-track testing, it will make its racing debut at the 2017 Rolex 24 at Daytona in late January. The approximately 600 horse power engine, developed and raced with Advanced Engine Research (AER), is a 2.0-litre, inline 4cyl turbocharged engine. “This is a huge moment for Mazda Motorsports and the entire Mazda family,” said John Doonan, director of Mazda Motorsports North America. “To have a car which features Mazda design language at the top level of our motorsports program is meaningful for us as a brand. We believe we have the right team, the right drivers and the right chassis to win races and championships. “Mazda has good, long-standing relationships with Riley and Multimatic, and is happy to be the first to test their new chassis. “We look forward to seeing it make its racing debut at Daytona with Mazda bodywork and the Mazda MZ-2.0T engine.

EXUM STRUGGLING FOR NBA COURT TIME

AT JAZZ

D

ante Exum appears on the outer at Utah, with his NBA court time plummeting in a worrying sign for the Australian’s career. Exum was not called on by Jazz coach Quin Snyder in Monday’s (Tuesday AEDT) 112-103 away win over Minnesota. In Utah’s previous two games, the point guard spent all but 13 minutes on the bench and failed to score a point following the return of star George Hill from injury. Hill had 24 points on Monday, while teammates Rudy Gobert (16 points and 17 rebounds) and Gordon Hayward (24 points) also starred as the Jazz recorded their third-straight win. Exum, the 2014 No.5 draft pick, had gradually increased his minutes this season after returning from more than a year out with a knee injury. He had averaged 27.75 minutes per game while Hill was on the sidelines, starting six of eight outings and averaging 9.5 points. He scored a season-best 14 points against Chicago two weeks ago. But since Hill’s return, the Jazz have preferred Shelvin Mack at back-up point guard, forcing Exum down the pecking order. Exum has played 17 games since making his comeback at the start of the 2016-17 NBA season after rupturing his ACL playing for the Boomers in August last year.

Man City bound Jesus wins Brazilian title F

uture Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus has helped Palmeiras win its first Brazilian championship title in 22 years after a 1-0 home victory over Chapecoense. Defender Fabiano scored the only goal on 26 minutes from the edge of the box to give the title to the Sao Paulo-based club with one

game left. Palmeiras is now the only club to hold nine Brazilian championship titles, one ahead of Santos. Relegated twice to the second division after their last title, Palmeiras’ recovery was financed by millionaire club president Paulo Nobre.

The stars of the team include teenage Gabriel Jesus - Palmeiras’ top scorer in the tournament with 12 goals - and veteran midfielder Ze Roberto. Gabriel Jesus, who will miss the last round, signed in August for Manchester City but stayed in Brazil to see out the season.

Postecoglou preparing for busy January

W

ith key internationals facing make-orbreak decisions over their club future, Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou says he’s ready to help them find new homes. But the national team boss isn’t as worried as some by senior Australians missing out at club level. Two starters in Australia’s underwhelming 2-2 draw with Thailand are persona non grata when it comes to selection at their top-tier clubs. Mat Ryan and Robbie Kruse are playing in two of the biggest leagues on the planet but can’t get a look in on match days. While left-back Brad Smith finally made his debut for Bournemouth in the English Premier League on (Monday AEDT) in his side’s 3-1 loss to Arsenal. Matt Spiranovic needs a new club or will be playing in the Chinese second division next year, while Mark

Milligan’s struggling Abu Dhabi-based side looks set for major upheaval. Speaking from Kazan after the draw for the Confederations Cup pitted Australia against powerhouses Germany and Chile next June, Postecoglou said there was plenty of water to flow under the bridge until they were next in action for Australia. “Football changes pretty quickly,” he said. “We’re still in November. Our next game is in March. There’s a lot of things that can change before now and then.” While Postecoglou professed to be relaxed about the prospect of his chargers, there’s no doubting 2017 is a huge year for the national team. The Socceroos play their decisive five World Cup qualifiers,

beginning with a trip to the Middle East to face Iraq and a home tie with United Arab Emirates in March. Another home qualifier in June against Saudi Arabia precedes their Confederations Cup campaign in Russia. Then comes the final two qualifiers; a trip to Japan to face the arch-enemy followed by a home clash with Thailand. It’s a footballing feast and Postecoglou wants everyone fit and ready. “The players all understand

we prefer them and want them to be playing regular football and that’s what they want to do as well,” he said. “We’ll monitor that closely and if we can help in any way we can we will. “Ultimately it’s in the players own hands to make decisions that are going to be best for their careers. “Hopefully from our perspective hopefully all the boys come into the March games knowing we’ve got a big 12 months ahead of us, and are playing regularly.”

ROSBERG EMULATES DAD DONS PICK A WINNER WITH TOP AFL DRAFT PICK WITH F1 WORLD TITLE << cont. from front page...

Graham Hill (1962, 1968) and Damon Hill (1996) are the only other father and son to have won the title. Rosberg’s second place at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was enough to wrestle the title away from Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton and also prevented his archrival from clinching his third straight and fourth overall. “It’s unbelievably special to beat him because the level’s so high,” Rosberg said. “It makes this so much more satisfying for me, because he’s the benchmark and I took the world championship away from him.” Rosberg finished the season on 385 points to Hamilton’s 380. Just like his father, Rosberg drives in the No. 6 car. His 67-year-old father was one of the most flamboyant drivers of his generation. “Every Saturday night I get a text from him: ‘Pedal to the metal.’ That’s it,” Rosberg said. “It’s been good how he’s let me get on with it and taken a step back. So I’m very thankful for that.” Rosberg’s title went down to the wire in a nerve-

shredding finale. “I was relieved” his father said after the race in the F1 paddock. “Two laps from the end I was nervous.” With Hamilton purposefully slowing him down, two other drivers hard on his tail and the title on the line, Rosberg did not crack. Hamilton won the race from pole position for his 53rd GP win. But Rosberg was 12 points ahead of him before the race and only needed to finish no lower than third if Hamilton won. “It was so intense, the race, so tough,” said the 31-year-old Rosberg, who finished runner-up to Hamilton in the past two years. Rosberg repeatedly wiped his face and lowered his head several times in the post-race news conference, appearing emotionally exhausted as he tilted back into his chair and rubbed his eyes. Still, he expects to find plenty of energy to celebrate his win. “Tonight’s going to be absolutely nuts,” he said. “I don’t think I’m going to be available for a few days.”

Fremantle chose a tall defender, local product Griffin Logue of Swan Districts, at No.8 and Port Adelaide snared a tall forward - the Murray Bushrangers’ Todd Marshall at No.18. The Western Bulldogs finished off the first round with the only ruckman picked early - South Fremantle’s Tim English. Six clubs - Collingwood, St Kilda, Geelong, Richmond, Hawthorn and Melbourne didn’t have a pick in the first round after dealing them away during the trade period. The Pies snared both their father-son targets, matching a North Melbourne bid for Gavin Brown’s son Callum at pick 35 and securing Peter Daicos’ son Josh at pick 57 after no other clubs bid for him. West Coast landed Chris Waterman’s son Jake with the 77th and final pick of the draft. Those aren’t the only famous names to return to the AFL. The Saints picked Ben Long, the nephew of Michael Long, with their first selection at pick 25. Willie Rioli, cousin to Hawthorn’s Cyril and Richmond’s Daniel,

will play for West Coast after the Eagles swooped at pick 52. However, Ben Jarman, son of Adelaide and Hawthorn great Darren, did not get picked up, leaving the Crows to claim him at Monday’s rookie draft. Mature-age players were also well-represented as Geelong picked Tom Stewart and Timm House from the Cats’ VFL side and Ryan Abbott from the Grovedale Tigers in the local Geelong league. Melbourne also selected Footscray VFL forward Mitch Hannan and the Giants threw delisted Docker Matt de Boer a lifeline, selecting the defender with the 58th pick overall. The Hawks were the last club into the draft, picking up Murray Bushrangers defender Harry Morrison at pick 74. After letting Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis go during the trade period, Hawthorn’s second and final pick at No.76, was key forward Mitchell Lewis from the Calder Canons. The Demons were the only other club to have just two picks, while Brisbane, Carlton, Geelong and GWS stocked up with six players each.

DONS PICK A WINNER WITH TOP AFL DRAFT PICK

I

n the end it came down to one thing for Essendon; Andrew McGrath is a winner. The Bombers began Friday night’s draft in Sydney by claiming McGrath, an explosive midfielder from TAC Cup club Sandringham Dragons, with the first No.1 pick in the club’s history. The top pick in most recent drafts has been obvious from a long way out but the quality and depth of this talent pool

required Essendon to do their homework diligently. “He’s a winner ... he’s a leader and they’re hard to find, so that was probably the major reason we decided to take him,” Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro said. “He performs at a high level and when he performs he wins.” “I think what sets him apart is his mindset ... he’s just really mentally tough. “He rises to every challenge

that’s put before him and he plays in every part of the ground.” The Dragons contributed an impressive seven players at this draft. Greater Western Sydney opted for Sandringham mid Tim Taranto with the second overall pick, with Brisbane pouncing on North Ballarat onballer Hugh McCluggage at No.3. Gold Coast dominated early proceedings at

Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion and the Suns selected three midfielders and a defender with their four picks inside the top 10. AFL national talent manager Kevin Sheahan declared this year’s talent pool heavy with midfielders and the first round proved him right. Most players picked early were midfielders or projected to move into the middle as they gained AFL experience.
