ideo assistance for referees could be a reality at next year's soccer World Cup finals despite teething problems when they were tested at the Club World Cup, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said recently. Speaking at Wembley Stadium after the Annual Meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), Infantino said all the referees likely to officiate in Russia next year had been tested with VAR technology. Study finds scary levels of

WEE in pools

C

anadian researchers studying urine levels in swimming pools have discovered just how high the levels are, and the results are not pretty. Researchers at the University of Alberta developed a test to measure the amount of urine and took more than 250 samples from 31 pools and hot tubs in two Canadian cities. The results showed one 830,000-litre pool, which is about one-third of an Olympicsized pool, had 75 liters of urine while another smaller pool had 30 litres. Humans introduce “a variety of chemicals” into recreational waters through bodily fluids, and the separate news of an overnight water colour change in the 2016 Rio Olympic pools highlight the need to monitor water quality, according to the study, published in the journal Environmental Science and

70,000

UP TO Technology Letters. Although urine itself is sterile, its presence in swimming pools is a public health concern because urine can mix with pool chemicals to harm swimmers’ health, according to the study. Researchers measured for the substance acesulfame-K (ACE), an artificial sweetener that passes through the body completely and is “an ideal urinary marker,” according to the study. It found concentrations of ACE in the pools and tubs, which were not named, that were up to 570-fold greater than in normal tap water. Researchers then used the ACE concentration of the two pools over three weeks to estimate their levels of urine, according to the study. The Alberta Health provincial department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

personal Centrelink information, saying the agency could “correct the record” to maintain integrity and confidence in the system and had done so for many years. “Unfounded allegations do unnecessarily undermine confidence in the department and the social welfare system,” she told senators. Centrelink bosses agreed an individual’s personal information handed to a journalist last week was protected information, saying it was run by the minister’s office first and provided under lawful exemptions. The same exemption had been used many times. Releasing the information was “essential” for retaining public confidence in the welfare system. “The only information which we are able to release is information which is specifically to correct the record,” Mr Hutson told senators. “Information concerning an individual which has not been made otherwise public is not released, and has not been released in this circumstance.” Ms Campbell said the person involved made a number of unfounded claims which could have a knock-on effect for others. “It was in the opinion of officers that this was likely to concern other individuals, that they may see this and think that they too had erred and not met their commitments,” she said. Greens senator Rachel Siewert argued there were “errors and omissions” in the information released which undermined integrity in the system. “If you’re going to release something, at least do it properly,” she told the Centrelink heads.

ENERGY COMPANY BACKS EMISSIONS TRADING

A

major Australian energy provider has joined in calls for an emissions intensity trading scheme to help fix the country’s energy woes. AGL Energy endorsed carbon pricing during a senate inquiry into Australia’s energy future on Tuesday, joining

similar calls made by the National Farmers Federation. Such a scheme - which is opposed by the Turnbull government - will help make renewable energies more competitive and drive down prices, Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said outside the inquiry.

Man bailed after ‘making 3D-printed guns’

A

Sydney man who allegedly manufactured guns in his living room using a 3D printer and instructions off the internet has been granted

bail ahead of an April court appearance. Sicen Sun appeared in Waverley Court on Wednesday, after police allegedly found four

3D-manufactured imitation guns, two air pistols and at least one 3D printer in his eastern suburbs unit. They say they searched the 27-year-old’s residence after he advertised one of the guns, a 3D SIG 250 pistol, for sale for $1 million dollars. Sun’s solicitor said his client was “something of a fanboy” who made the guns to resemble those in his favourite science fiction, TV

shows and games. But Detective Inspector Joe Doueihi of State Crime Command’s Firearms Squad said Sun’s gaming hobby was no excuse. He is due to appear in court again on April 27.

WHAT IS A 3D-PRINTED WEAPON? • 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, involves depositing layers of material to build an object • Instructions on how to make a single-shot firearm out of 3D plastic parts were posted online in 2013 with more than 100,000 downloads worldwide before the US government ordered their removal • The weapons are deemed “undetectable and untraceable” because they aren’t metal and don’t have serial numbers • NSW Police say the weapons can kill and users are at risk because they can explode CURRENT LEGISLATION • It’s illegal across Australia to make a gun without a licence • But it’s not an offence to possess or use a 3D printer • NSW in 2015 became the first state to criminalise possessing instructions on how to build a gun using a 3D printer RECENT AUSTRALIAN INCIDENTS • March 2017 - Sci-fi fan Sicen Sun, 27, was charged with making four 3D firearms at a Sydney unit after he allegedly tried to sell one online for $1 million

• December 2016 - Accused Melbourne drug kingpin Francesco Molinaro was arrested after police allegedly uncovered 3D printers and 3D-printed weapons in his home • May 2016 - Victoria Police seize firearm manufacturing equipment including 3D printers when arresting two men and a woman in Seabrook • December 2015 - Alleged Lone Wolves bikie gang member Luke McNally charged after Queensland Police find a loaded 3D-printed gun in the bedroom of a Mudgeeraba property • February 2015 - Police unearth enough 3D-printed gun parts to make up to “four considerable firearms” at a Gold Coast property WHAT’S THE RISK? • Experts say the current threat of 3D printing of firearms is low and the production method is unlikely to be a significant source of illicit weapons because the technology doesn’t match the reliability of factoryproduced guns • They say the threat is likely to increase when the technology improves and printers become more affordable Source: Illicit Firearms in Australia - ACIC 2015-16 report; Weapons Prohibition Act 1998 (NSW); NSW Police.

ICE EPIDEMIC NOT A CRIMINAL ISSUE: EXPERTS

T

he Australian government’s current approach to the ice epidemic is only “digging a deeper hole” and progressive policy is needed, say two drug addiction experts. A “harsh” approach is not just ineffective but counterproductive, Dr Matthew Frei and Dr Alex Wodak write in the Medical Journal of Australia. They say despite the recommendations of last year’s Ice Taskforce, the government continues to define addiction to ice as a criminal justice problem. The drug addiction doctors suggest contempt and an unwillingness to help those with a serious drug problem has aided the expansion of the illicit drug market in Australia. “Governments continue to define the issue as primarily a criminal justice problem, using pejorative terms when referring to people who use drugs, and generously support law

enforcement measures while parsimoniously funding health and social interventions,” they say. “Australian Commonwealth, state and territory governments allocated about two-thirds of drug spending to law enforcement and only nine per cent for prevention, 21 per cent for drug treatment and two per cent to harm reduction over the 200910 financial year. “After decades of this approach, Australia’s illicit drug market is expanding. Not only are illict drugs easy to obtain but prices have fallen and many newly identified psychoactive drugs have appeared, often more dangerous than older drugs,” Dr Frei and Dr Wodak said. Drug use surveillance found that between 2009 and 2014 the proportion of drug users finding it “easy” or “very easy” to obtain ice, or crystalline methylamphetamine, increased from 65 per cent

to 91 per cent. Ice use increased from 37 per cent to 61 per cent in this time. While this demand remains strong there will “always” be a supply, wrote Dr Frei, the clinical director of drug treatment centre Turning Point, and Dr Wodak from St Vincent’s Hospital Alcohol and Drug service. Progressive government policy, they say, is what is needed to redefine drug use as a health and social issue. “British politician Denis Healey was fond

KIM DOTCOM CAN BE EXTRADITED: NZ COURT

I

nternet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom will go to the Court of Appeal after losing a second bid against extradition to the US on charges of racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering. But the German-born founder of Megaupload has been successful in his bid to block extradition related on copyright infringement charges, all which date back to his arrest in 2012. Dotcom’s legal team say while one major part of their bid was successful, the overall outcome is “extremely disappointing”. He was arrested following raids in January 2012, alongside co-accused Mathias

N

okia is to relaunch its 3310 mobile phone as the technology firm reveals a new line-up of smartphones in an attempted revamp of the company. An updated version of the 3310 - first launched in 2000 - complete with the classic mobile game Snake and a month-long standby battery life is to go on sale later this year, new manufacturer HMD Global confirmed. The company said the device, which will not have internet connectivity, will cost 49 euro ($A67) and is aimed at those looking for a second or so-called “burner” phone to make calls and send texts. Having once been the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer, Nokia has since slipped

Ortmann, Bran van der Kolk and Finn Botato, and accused of defrauding copyright holders and paying users to upload illegal files. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has led the investigation and claim Megaupload is a criminal conspiracy that earned the men $NZ175 million ($A164 million). They’re each facing 13 charges. High Court Justice Murray Gilbert recently released findings upholding an earlier District Court decision that the four could be extradited on the racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering charges. behind all its major rivals and was sold off by previous buyers Microsoft last year. As well as the 3310, Nokia also revealed a new line of mid-range modern smartphones - including the Nokia 6 the company released in China at the start of the year, as well as a limited edition gloss version called the Arte Black - alongside the new Nokia 5 and Nokia 3. All four devices are made from aluminium, with each device shaped from an individual block of metal. Each also runs the latest version of Android - Nougat 7.0. HMD Global chief executive Arto Nummela said the new line-up of phones would build on Nokia’s reputation in the industry.

But he supported an argument put forward by Dotcom’s legal team that he couldn’t be extradited on copyright infringement grounds because the allegation against him is not a criminal offence in New Zealand. Instead, in his more than 360-page judgment, Justice Gilbert found conspiracy to commit copyright infringement amounted to conspiracy to defraud, and that was an extradition offence. Ultimately he found Dotcom and his co-accused were still eligible to surrender. Dotcom’s lawyer Ron Mansfield said the decision

Kim Dotcom, founder of filesharing site Megaupload

meant the case was no longer the “largest criminal copyright case”. “As we have said all along, there is no such offence under our Copyright Act. We were right.” He said the final hurdle to overturning extradition will be determined by the Court of Appeal. “We remain confident that this last point which would prevent extradition in this complex and unprecedented legal case, will be resolved in Kim’s favour in a manner consistent with parliament’s intent, international law and importantly, one might think, the United States’ own law,” Mr Mansfield said.

MAN FINED OVER DRONE NEAR POLICE CHOPPER

A

university student has copped a $900 fine for flying a drone close to a police helicopter conducting a rescue operation in the NSW Blue Mountains. The 25-year-old was caught after police spotted the drone near the Echo Point scenic lookout in Katoomba, where the chopper was flying low during the search in September 2016. The drone then crashed into a tree on a private home.

The man was fined and counselled over previous flights which also breached drone safety regulations, the Civil Aviation Authority revealed recently. CASA spokesman Peter Gibson said drones must never be flown in way that could create a hazard to people, property or aircraft.

Hellfire missile fired by a CIA drone has killed al-Qaeda leader Abu al-Khayr al-Masri while he was riding in a car near the northwestern Syrian city of Idlib, a US intelligence official says. The 59-year-old al-Masri, whose real name was Abdullah Muhammed Rajab Abdulrahman, was second-incommand to the group’s leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and a member of its shura

council, the official said. He also was married to one of Osama bin Laden’s daughters. The official said Masri, as he was widely known, had sought refuge in Iran after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the US, and was believed to have been in Syria helping to direct Jabhat Fateh al-Sham, an al-Qaeda branch previously called the Nusra Front. The Iranians released him from house arrest almost two years ago, in exchange for a diplomat being held hostage in Yemen by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. An Iranian diplomat held hostage in Yemen since 2013 returned home to Tehran in 2015 amid conflicting accounts of how he was freed from his unidentified abductors. At the time Iran said the diplomat had been rescued by an Iranian intelligence operation in Yemen. But Yemeni media run by the Iran-allied Houthi group said the diplomat was freed in a prisoner exchange that took place in another country. Masri’s death was the end of an almost 19-year US hunt, a second US official said Masri was thought to be one of the planners of the 1998 attacks on the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania.

Dude, where’s my super-fast internet?

I

t’s the question on everyone’s lips when thinking about the internet: when will I get the NBN? Now the company building the national broadband network has better answers. NBN Co has made a major update to its website to make it easier for people to find out when they can get the super-fast broadband connected at their home or business. The update moves away from telling people when NBN Co will be building in their neighbourhood, instead letting them know approximately when they should be able to buy a service from a retailer. “The update also means for the tech enthusiasts, who are interested in what kind of technology their retailer will connect them to via the NBN network, that this information is available to them,” NBN Co’s John Simon said. The government says all Australians will have access to the NBN by 2020. Earlier in February it reached four million premises, or about a third of all Australian homes and businesses. More than 1.7 million of those had signed up to use the NBN service. NBN Co expected to reach its halfway milestone by mid-2017.

he actor is taking his Saturday Night Live impersonation of President Donald Trump to the next level by writing an entire book with Kurt Anderson titled You Can’t Spell America Without Me: The Really Tremendous Inside Story of My Fantastic First Year as President Donald J. Trump. The book is scheduled to be published in November, according to the New York Times. Anderson, currently the host of the public radio show Studio 360, is known as a founding editor of the nowdefunct Spy magazine in the 1980s. There, Anderson coined a nickname for Trump, “short-fingered vulgarian.” “I think it’s fair to say that

Kurt will do most of the writing,” Baldwin told the Times via email. “We have that arrangement whereby he doesn’t put on the wig, I don’t open up a Word document.” Baldwin will, however, narrate the audio-book as Trump, according to the Times. Trump has donned the Trump wig on SNL since the 42nd season’s premiere. His frequent appearances in almost every episode since then have elicited various insults from Trump’s Twitter account. “Time to retire the boring and unfunny show,” Trump tweeted about SNL in October. “Alec Baldwin portrayal stinks.” Later, in December, Trump

tweeted that the NBC show is “unwatchable” and has also called it a “hit job.” At one point in December, Baldwin offered to “stop” his impersonation if Trump

released his tax returns. Penguin Press tweeted out the news about Baldwin and Anderson’s collaboration, writing “we’re so excited to publish [the book].”

JACK WHITE LAUNCHES VINYL PLANT IN DETROIT

D

etroit-raised rocker Jack White is building on a vision to blend music and manufacturing in a part of his home town that long inspired him. The Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, guitarist, drummer and producer is overseeing the launch of a vinyl record pressing plant in the back of his Third Man Records shop north of downtown Detroit. The eight presses represent some of the first newlybuilt machines installed in the US in more than three decades - corresponding with a vinyl revival. White told The Associated Press on

Friday that “there’s so much demand for the records and so little supply.” “Two years ago we could not buy new presses,” said White. “We’re the first place to really be the guinea pig of this.” White marvels at the bright yellow, German-made machines, which earlier this week churned out records by The Stooges and MC5. He said they will press eyepopping, genre-spanning platters by Detroit bands of renown and then spread to other Third Man artists and those of other small labels. The plant also is part of a revival for a part of the city

where White and his former band, The White Stripes, got its start 20 years ago. “Out of the darkness comes the light: What was traditionally known as the roughest neighbourhood in Detroit, the Cass Corridor, is now showing the most incredible fruits and beauty and progress,” said White, who has recently collaborated with Beyonce and A Tribe Called Quest. His goal is to keep expanding in Nashville and Detroit so that “there’s nothing involved in the record that is not part of the Third Man system”. He likens the goal to that

of another famous Detroit manufacturer, automotive pioneer Henry Ford. “They had an idea about pouring raw materials into one end and out the other end came Model T cars,” he said. “We’re going to get there.”

Using their Spotter Network GPS markers, hundreds of storm chasers and weather fanatics on Sunday lined up to Paxton’s initials across the US’s “tornado alley”, in Kansas and Oklahoma, in a heartfelt ode to the late actor. Screen shots of maps depicting their “BP” tribute have been posted on social media. “It just keeps getting better! Hundreds of storm chasers honoring Bill Paxton in KS and OK. Paxton starred in the 1996 disaster classic Twister, in which he and Helen Hunt lead a team of scientists on a dangerous mission to gather more information about

the deadly wind storms. The movie went on to become the second-highestgrossing movie of 1996 behind Independence Day. Paxton went on to make the IMAX documentary Tornado Alley and often spoke about his fascination with the weather phenomenon, having grown up in nearby Texas.

egends are born and not made, or so they say. The Eagles legend began in California, way back in 1971, The Eagles Story began right here in Melbourne ten years ago. Through them and the music that became the soundtrack to a generation, the legend continues to prosper and grow. Musicland in Fawkner presents The Eagles Story on Saturday March 11 and is a magical trip down memory lane for all Eagles fans. Over the years the line-up of the band has changed, just like the originals, and has evolved into what you see today. Featuring five of Melbourne’s most in-demand, respected, players and vocalists. The band has all of the ingredients needed to replicate some of the greatest vocal arrangements and complex melodies ever produced. With such a huge catalogue of hits to choose from, the most difficult task for the band is deciding what songs to leave out, but don’t worry. along the way, the show never leaves you wondering. You will know every song and every song in turn will take you back to a time and place when life was just a little less complicated and just maybe, a whole lot more fun. The level of commitment from The Eagles Story to deliver the type of experience that can only come when great musicians are playing great songs is beyond doubt. Filled with amazing harmonies, memorable melody lines and those incredible guitar duels that became trade mark for the band, these Melbourne masters continue to perpetuate the glory that is the music of The Eagles. Unlike other tributes to The Eagles, The Eagles Story is all about reality, real voices, singing real harmonies and real players, making great live music; “it was that way for the originals and it is that way for us”. The Eagles Story is Pete McCarthy, Gary Young, Ash Balfour, Cres Crisp & Steve Wells. Their

credentials are unquestionable with each member having honed their craft over many years playing with some of the best known Australian rock, jazz and blues performers. Soulful ballads, sweet, West Coast country rock and driving rock and roll, The Eagles Story delivers right to your door and never disappoints. In January 2016, founding

ARIES This week is full of enthusiasm and initiative. There will be an opening to new information and interests. You just have to visualize and attract, Aries. Visualize your thoughts and emotions so you get to attract self confidence and optimism.

TAURUS Your houses of communication and discernment are working double time this week. Because of this you are extra assertive and can easily say no to someone who crosses your boundaries. There is a big chance you decide to stop doing something or that you are looking for something that brings you more satisfaction. GEMINI According to your prediction, you need some moments of peace more often this week. It’s hard to keep a lid on your feelings, especially those which have been simmering for a while now. Be careful what you say and how you say it, because you could hurt yourself and other people in the process.

CANCER Lesson for the week: act without thinking about what you gain from it. Not everything you gain is tangible, Cancer. Sure, helping others out may take some of your personal time, but the bonding benefit as well as the fulfillment of being able to help someone in need far outweigh any monetary cost. LEO Blue skies are ahead of you this week, Leo. For you making space to dream is the most realistic and productive thing you can do. Because of this you stay inspired to carve your professional life. VIRGO Mercury, the winged messenger of the gods, commands you to speak this week. However, your brave and honest declarations could be misfired. The best way to get through this week without hurting others and getting yourself hurt in the process is by keeping your mouth closed at certain times. LIBRA The relationship between you and your partner could be a little cold from time to time. Your intuition is the most reliable barometer, Libra. Try to figure out the cause; don’t exit this week without having that important dialogue. SCORPIO Spend time writing down your professional goals, Scorpio; the universe is listening. Besides that you will be more inspired reading it everyday while you come up with practical and specific plan of action on how to make it happen. SAGITTARIUS Unfortunately, this week isn’t look great for love and friendships. You have the tendency to be critical and controlling. Sigh! You might be projecting your own insecurities onto someone else. Listen to your feelings, especially your anxieties, but don’t let them overtake you.

30 Song, Hello Mary ___ (1960) (3) 31 Annoyance (3)

CAPRICORN This week is looking better than last week. It’s easier for you to gather support and resources to make your dreams comes true. Just be careful not to be so bold in sharing your honest opinions, Cap. You may have a reasonable suggestion but others have a right to their perspectives, too.

32 Partake of food (3) 33 Cambridge river (3) 34 Wood decay, dry ___ (3) 35 Supporters (9) 36 Short-lived (9) 37 US actress, starred in Outbreak (1995) (4,5) 38 Self-starting (9)

PISCES Relationships will experience positive influences this week. You will have a little fun and lots of opportunities to show your own quirky, authentic side upfront. You will be able to give good advice and coach others.

Mercedes-Benz Concept X-Class

HITS AUSTRALIAN SOIL FOR THE FIRST TIME

T

he Concept X-Class powerful adventurer touched down in Melbourne recently. It’s a sign that preparations are underway for the highly anticpated release of the new Mercedes-Benz X-Class in 2018. Following on from its October launch in Stockholm Sweden last year, the Concept X-Class was flown in from Germany for a number of promotional activities, including a series of photo shoots which placed the vehicle in typical Australian settings. The photos will be used for various promotional materials supporting the launch activities. It also featured at the MercedesBenz Vans Australia and New

Zealand National Dealer Conference held in Melbourne recently. The dealer network received a detailed briefing on the vehicle from Christian Pohl, global Head of Product Management and Marketing for X-Class, who was also in the country supporting the local team ahead of next year’s official arrival. Managing Director Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia and New Zealand Diane Tarr said “Australia and New Zealand are critical markets for the success of the X-Class. The Concept has been flown from Germany so our dealers can get a detailed briefing about the vehicle and continue their preparation for a successful launch of the X-Class in 2018.”

The New SH150 is Scooting to Australia!

O

ne of Europe’s most popular scooters, the SH150 is coming to Australia in March. The 2017 SH150 is on a mission to provide fun and fuss-free transport down under and can be picked up for an MLP of $4,999. With LED lighting and a large glove box which houses a 12V power socket; the SH150 will keep you charged and get you where you need to be in style. The 153cc four-stroke, liquid-cooled 2-valve engine is a masterpiece of mass centralisation. The radiator, rather than being mounted at the front of the machine has been built into the engine itself for a much simpler and lighter layout. With a focus on efficiency and engine performance, the SH150s PGM-FI settings and key fuel-saving technology including Idle Stop coupled with an easy

to handle chassis, make for an ultimately practical commuter. Fitted with Honda’s Combined Breaking System – CBS and lightweight 16-inch aluminium die-cast wheels are key to its surefooted handling ability and stability on a variety of road surfaces. To make daily life on board the SH150 that little bit more convenient, the fitted with the Honda Smart Key system. The Smart Key itself resides in the rider’s pocket and does away with the need to constantly insert and withdraw a key for ignition, fuel cap and seat.

Chelsea edge closer to EPL title C

helsea have brushed aside London rivals West Ham United with a 2-1 away win that restored their 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League. Eden Hazard gave them the lead after a swift 25thminute counter-attack before Diego Costa bundled the ball home shortly after the break to put the Blues in control at London Stadium. West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini grabbed a consolation in added time, but the result was never in doubt. Mid-table West Ham, who knocked Chelsea out of the League Cup this season when crowd trouble marred the night, offered little threat for most of the game as the west London side surge on towards the title. Antonio Conte’s team, who have won 21 of their 27 league matches this season, have 66 points ahead of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur. Chelsea were content to sit deep and draw West Ham’s sting for the opening 20 minutes in which the home side enjoyed plenty of the ball without troubling goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Striker Andy Carroll got a bloody nose for his efforts as he made his presence felt in the box but Chelsea were unruffled. When the opportunity presented itself, though, Chelsea were primed and launched a lethal counterattack to take the lead. Midfielder N’Golo Kante stole possession deep inside his own half and immediately released Hazard who exchanged passes with Pedro before calmly taking the ball around ‘keeper Darren Randolph to slot home his 11th league goal of the season. Chelsea took control after that and might have secured the points before half-time

had they been a little more clinical. Another breakaway ended with Victor Moses, who was on loan at West Ham last season when the Hammers finished 12 points above Chelsea, having a shot blocked by Aaron Cresswell before Randolph saved well from Pedro’s close-range follow-up effort. Manuel Lanzini wasted West Ham’s best chance when he fired well over the bar from a central position. Chelsea then went further ahead five minutes into the second half when Cesc Fabregas’s corner skimmed off the head of West Ham’s Pedro Obiang and straight to Costa who could not miss. West Ham roused themselves and it took a superb low save by Courtois to deny Sofiane Feghouli before, seconds later, home defender Jose Fonte headed over with the goal at his mercy.

Costa looked certain to double his tally with a brilliant turn in the area but his shot was clawed away by Randolph. The closing stages were played out to swathes of empty seats as West Ham’s fans drifted home while Chelsea’s sang “We’re going to win the league”. It was hard to disagree, although Lanzini did provide something for the hosts to cheer with a stoppagetime strike.

reek Superleague leaders Olympiacos have sacked head coach Paulo Bento following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to PAOK Salonika. Despite holding a six-point lead at the top of the table, the Greek champions, who won the title for a sixth successive campaign last season, have dispensed with the services of former Portugal coach Bento. Having joined the club in August 2016 he oversaw 25 wins in his 37 games in charge, but left after three successive league defeats which saw his side fail to score. Olympiacos, who face Turkish side Besiktas in a Europa League last-16 firstleg tie at home on Thursday, said in a statement on the club’s official website: “PAE Olympiakos announces the termination of its cooperation with Paulo Bento.” Academy coach Vasilis Vouzas has taken over firstteam duties until a new head coach is appointed. During four seasons in charge of Sporting Lisbon between 2005 and 2009 the former midfielder took the side to Champions League qualification before being appointed Portugal coach, leading the national team to the Euro 2012 semi-finals in Poland and Ukraine where they were beaten on penalties by eventual champions Spain. Portugal qualified for the 2014 World Cup finals following a play-off win over Sweden, but after going out at the group stages, Bento was sacked. He had a short spell in Brazil managing Cruzeiro before moving to Greece last summer to take over at Olympiacos.

Bogut breaks leg in horror Cavs debut

A

ndrew Bogut has suffered a broken leg just 58 seconds into his debut with NBA defending champions Cleveland. When Bogut came off the bench late in the final seconds of the first quarter of Monday’s game against the Miami Heat at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena the home crowd gave him a loud cheer. But Sighs went through the arena 22 seconds into the second quarter when the big Australian went out to the three point line

to defend Miami forward Okaro White. White’s knee struck Bogut in the left shin and he fell to the floor in pain. With the 2.13m tall centre at the Cleveland Clinic undergoing further tests, the Cavs said initial x-rays revealed a fractured left tibia. Bogut, who has struggled with injury in recent years, was traded by the Dallas Mavericks to the Philadelphia 76ers last month before negotiating a contract buyout and then joining the NBA champion Cavaliers.

“If not, he’ll certainly play the following week in the VFL. “When you go through a rehab program, it’s just to make sure you do the quality of football training, so you’re ready for a game. “He’s been out for six or seven weeks now ... not cautious, just making sure he’s ready for the duration of this season.” Harvey was more bullish about Hurley. “My understanding is that he will play, pending training,” he said Harvey added they could have up to 10 players turning out in the VFL match. Essendon’s fortunes are tough to predict this season, given their unique circumstances, but Harvey likes how they are preparing. “All I know is there’s

underlying ambition with this team,” he said. “Everyone knows we’re all under pressure for spots ... and expectation. “I’m pretty sure you’ll find this group is going to challenge each other and we’ll be a dangerous side throughout the course of the year.” Harvey said one of the keys would be how quickly their young players can become regular members of the senior team. “Just the chemistry - and the reality is they still need to play a lot more football with each other,” Harvey said. “But their understanding of our game plan, the instruction, the communication that’s been put forward at training ... we’re going to be a wellorganised team, put it that way.”

training of the referees,” Infantino told reporters. “It is realistic (for the World Cup) because of the experiences we had at the Club World Cup in Japan in December. “For the top referees it is not a big change and they have learned very quickly. I’m very confident about it. “Using VAR would not allow perfection in decisions but there are no negatives. Whenever it’s used you know the right decision will be taken.” IFAB, the game’s lawmaking body, agreed to live trials of VAR last year. It allows match referees to consult a video official in four “game-changing” scenarios:

when a goal has been scored, penalty decisions, sendingsoff and mistaken identity. Video referees are already used in rugby and cricket. The experiment with VAR at FIFA’s Club World Cup in December will be remembered for a farcical incident when Cristiano Ronaldo’s strike for Real Madrid, his 500th career goal, against Club America was initially given, potentially ruled offside, then allowed to stand after video analysis. Twenty competitions around the world will host “live” VAR trials this year, while the English FA said it hoped to use VAR for next year’s FA Cup, from the thirdround stage.

BOMBERS TO LOAD UP AGAINST CATS

E

ssendon All-Australian Cale Hooker will most likely only have one VFL practice match before their round-one AFL blockbuster against Hawthorn. While fellow key position player Michael Hurley is likely to play in their last pre-season match again Geelong this Sunday, the Bombers will be

cautious with Hooker’s return. Hooker has missed Essendon’s two narrow preseason losses as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Hurley suffered ankle injuries twice last month, most recently in their February 26 loss to Gold Coast, but Essendon expect he will be ready for the Bendigo game against the

Cats. Apart from being two of Essendon’s most important players, Hooker and Hurley are also among the 10 Bombers returning from last year’s season-long bans. The year off means an extra element to their injury recovery. After Bendigo, Essendon players can also seek

permission to have a run in the VFL practice match against Geelong, a week before the March 25 AFL match against the Hawks. “He’ll certainly train this week, it’s just whether we feel he’s done enough football training to play,” Bombers assistant coach Mark Harvey said of Hooker.
