DJOKOVIC'S LOUD AUSTRALIAN OPEN STATEMENT...

A

delighted Novak Djokovic knew he made a big Australian Open statement when he toppled world No.1 Andy Murray 6-3 5-7 6-4 to retain the Qatar Open title. Djokovic was apologetic after a ball he slammed in anger hit a women in the stands, incurring the first of two warnings from the umpire for incidents as his emotions spilled over. But it was a mark of the intensity in the tight, dramatic, high-class first clash between the world's two best players since Murray won their season-ending climax at the ATP World Tour finals in London in November. Kardashian driver held over Paris robbery

P

olice investigating the theft of nearly $US10 million ($A14 million) in jewels from Kim Kardashian have arrested 17 people, including a chauffeur who drove the American reality television star around Paris in the days before the robbery. Many of those arrested in co-ordinated police raids in several different parts of France were known underworld figures aged around 50 and at least three were women, police and judicial sources say. French radio and TV reports on Monday said DNA traces from the scene of the heist led police to the suspects and that they would be held for questioning, possibly for as long as four days. A police source said one of those detained was Kardashian’s chauffeur when she was visiting Paris in October for Fashion Week and that police were trying to establish whether he had passed on information to the gang. Kardashian, 36, was photographed frequently while on the Paris trip, attending fashion shows and parties. She also posted numerous pictures to her

social media accounts. Jean Veil, a French lawyer for Kardashian, told France 2 television: “She (Kardashian) is very happy, very satisfied and to a certain extent reassured by the efficiency of the French police.” Thieves wearing ski masks and clothes with police markings burst into the luxury property where Kardashian, who is married to US rap star Kanye West, was sleeping in the early hours of October 3. They tied her up at gunpoint before making off with her engagement ring and other jewels, police said at the time. They fled on bicycles with jewellery worth 9 million euros (about $A13 million). Kardashian was badly shaken but physically unharmed. She has mostly since kept a low public profile but broke her silence on the robbery in a promotional clip for the upcoming season of her reality TV show Keeping Up With the Kardashians, which was released on Friday. “They’re going to shoot me in the back. There’s no way out,” a tearful Kardashian tells her family, recalling the robbery. “It makes me so upset to think about it.”

A

Melbourne man has been charged with stealing a woman’s underwear off her clothesline after the victim spotted the alleged thief a number of days after he made off with her knickers. Victoria Police say the woman saw the 52-year-old

man stealing her underwear in North Melbourne on Wednesday and then spotted him again five days later at a tram stop on Monday afternoon. She contacted police and the man was arrested and charged with trespass, theft and handling stolen goods.

CENTRELINK STAFF TO STRUGGLE WITH SCANDAL

T

here’s been widespread criticism the new automated data matching system, which uses information from the tax office, has been producing incorrect debt notices. The Commonwealth Ombudsman is investigating the system, which the government is using to claw back $4 billion in overpayments to welfare recipients. “This scheme is an absolute nightmare for thousands of Centrelink customers who’ve done absolutely nothing wrong, and the staff who are bearing the brunt of this mess,” Mr Tull said. He said staff have been struggling in a system that’s been in crisis for years, with the union concerned about Centrelink’s ability to cope in coming months. “The serious problems with this debt recovery program are piling on even People walk during snowfall at Sultanahmet district, one of Istanbul’s main tourist attractions, Monday, Jan. 9, 2017. more pressure, and feeding more aggression from understandably frustrated customers. “Thousands of jobs have been cut in the Department of Human Services and that’s why service standards have dropped to unacceptable levels, including 36 million missed calls to DHS just last year alone. “This is an agency in desperate need of proper resourcing, otherwise it’s the general public who will continue to suffer.” Mr Tull said the debt recovery scheme needed to be urgently suspended, as Centrelink staff brace for even more work with new students expected to apply for benefits and as a result of recent changes to the pension. The union is calling on the government to shift thousands of DHS casuals to permanent staff to deal with the deluge of work.

No signs Hird was struggling: father J

ames Hird’s father Allan says there were no signs his son was on a path to illhealth and accused AFL and Essendon administrators of pursuing him as a scapegoat. Allan Hird said AFL officials were “thugs” and “bullies” without a “moral compass” for their treatment of his son in the aftermath of Essendon’s supplement scandal. Hird would not reveal his son’s whereabouts amid reports he is receiving treatment at an undisclosed health facility. But he said Hird was recovering well after being hospitalised for a suspected overdose last week. “He’s fine. My daughter’s been keeping me regularly

informed,” Hird told Melbourne radio station 3AW on Tuesday. “I’m in Brisbane and I’m coming down shortly to see him.” The 43-year-old James Hird, a father of four, has kept a low public profile since he left his job as Essendon coach in August 2015. His reputation was damaged severely amid investigations into the club’s 2012 supplements program that left 34 past and present Bombers banned last season. His wife Tania has requested their family be granted privacy. Allan Hird said he had no suspicions his son’s health was under a cloud but

believes he had been let down by people he had trusted. He said leaks to media from the Essendon board while James was coach worked against him. “I had no inkling. (It came) just out of the blue,” he said. “Right from the start, I believed Jim trusted people too much. “He put too much trust in the club doing the right thing. He put too much trust in the AFL. He put too much trust in our system of government. “If he had his time again, he would have done it differently.” Hird called for a top-level inquiry to look into the supplements scandal where people who handled the matter - including former federal government ministers and AFL and Essendon officials - would give evidence under oath. He accused administrators of conspiring to make Hird the scapegoat for the ill-fated supplement program, protesting his son’s innocence.

“Get them to tell the truth. Get the truth out there and we’ll see where it lies,” he said. “A ‘conspiracy’ is probably the wrong word in a legal sense, but in the general public’s eye, I’d say a conspiracy between the Gillard government, the AFL and elements of the Essendon board, plus the Australian Anti-Doping Authority to get a result for something to get everyone out of a hole. “The Gillard government had got itself into a hole ... overblew that crime commission report enormously and they needed something and they did that for political reasons. “Both his employers were gunning for him but there was nothing specific he had ever done and there still isn’t.” The AFL has refused to comment. tough-talking US sheriff has celebrated the arrival in Florida of accused Australian child sex abuser Christopher Lobban after a fiveyear extradition battle. Lobban, 59, of Perth, allegedly had a “spanking fetish” and gave instructions from Australia over the internet to a girlfriend in Florida to handcuff two naked teenage girls to a “whipping bench” and video them as the woman struck the girls with leather paddles. “We’re pretty excited about him being back here,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said at a press conference in Florida on Monday. “If it were ethical, moral and legal for you to see these tapes, you would want to go down there and just beat him into a puddle. “It was that horrific.” Lobban vigorously fought extradition and had remained in custody in Perth since his arrest in July 2011. Sheriff Judd never gave up on getting Lobban on US soil. The sheriff released video of a tiredlooking Lobban in handcuffs being booked into Polk County Jail after his extradition. Lobban allegedly met his online

girlfriend, Robin Pagoria, a former Florida prison guard, on the Spank-OLife social network. Pagoria was sentenced in a Florida court in 2013 to 20 years in prison after doing a plea deal with prosecutors. Lobban, from his home in Perth, allegedly gave detailed instructions to Pagoria on how to build a “spanking bench” and use a leather paddle to beat the girls to fulfil his and Pagoria’s sexual desires, authorities allege. Pagoria allegedly videotaped the abuse and uploaded the videos to a website for Lobban’s review. “He saw them on video, and directed and critiqued how she would beat them in the future,” Sheriff Judd said. “I see them equally (as) a threat. “It wasn’t like she was submissive and just doing what he said. “This was a little sexual game they played so they were equally involved.” Lobban faces a long prison term in the US if convicted. He is charged with six felony counts, including two counts of promotion of a sexual performance by a child which carries a minimum sentence of 25 years’ prison and maximum of life.

Fernandez, an artist, had already claimed credit for the stunt in a Vice magazine interview, but police had not previously confirmed his involvement. He will face court on February 15.

SCAMMERS DEMANDING GIFT CARDS OR BITCOIN

S

cammers are demanding iTunes gift cards or the digital currency bitcoin as payment and using Facebook to trick Australians into handing over money. Sophisticated scammers keep changing their modus operandi and are hiding behind trusted brands such as government agencies, utilities and telecommunications companies, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says. “There’s a lot of work being done in many quarters however you can’t overestimate the number of scams that are flooding the country,” ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard told AAP. Ms Rickard said technology such as voice over internet protocol meant it was very cheap to make mass phone

calls or send emails. “They only need one per cent of people to take up and offer and they can make a lot of money.” Australians had lost more than $70 million to scams by the end of October, according to the most recent information for 2016 from reports to the ACCC. That is just the tip of the iceberg, says Ms Rickard who estimates it may represent only five to 10 per cent of the overall amount lost to scams in Australia. Being asked for payments via wire transfer used to be a good indication of a scam, but scammers have updated their tactics. Scammers impersonating the Australian Taxation Office demand iTunes gift cards or other pre-paid cards as a form of payment for tax debts, threatening that victims will

be arrested if they do not pay immediately. “They send people out to get literally thousands of dollars of iTunes gift cards,” Ms Rickard said. Reported losses from that scam reached more than $1 million in 2016. Ms Rickard said scammers’ payment demands had also shifted from the traditional wire transfer to bitcoin, particularly with ransomware where there are demands for anywhere from $500 to thousands of dollars to unlock computers. The largest financial losses continue to come from dating and romance scams and investment schemes, with more than $21 million and $25 million respectively reported lost to the ACCC’s Scamwatch by October.

Ms Rickard said more than a third of the victims of romance scams now met the scammer via social media, usually but not always Facebook, whereas dating websites were mostly used in the past. Ms Rickard said binary options scams were big in 2016, with more than $3 million lost as of September. Scammers pretend to be binary options traders, who predict short-term movements in commodity, asset or index prices, and use high-pressure tactics to convince people to invest before stealing the money. Ms Rickard said the number of scam reports continued to rise, totalling more than 134,000 by October, although losses reported to the watchdog were stable.

Drones have been used to smuggle mobile phones, drugs and weapons into prisons, in one case triggering a riot. This is feeding demand for increasingly advanced technology to bring down or disable unwanted drones.

At one end of the scale, the Dutch national police recently bought several birds of prey from a start-up called Guard From Above to pluck unwanted drones from the sky, its CEO and founder Sjoerd Hoogendoorn said in an email. Other approaches focus on netting drones, either via bigger drones or by guns firing a net and a parachute via compressed gas.

Some, like Germany’s DeDrone, take a less intrusive approach by using a combination of sensors camera, acoustic, Wi-Fi signal detectors and radio frequency (RF) scanners - to passively monitor drones within designated areas. Newer start-ups, however, are focusing on cracking the radio wireless protocols used to control a drone’s direction and payload to then take it over and block its video transmission. Singapore’s TeleRadio Engineering uses RF signals in its SkyDroner device to track and control drones and a video feed to confirm targets visually.

DroneVision Inc of Taiwan, meanwhile, says it is the first to anticipate the frequency hopping many drones use. Founder Kason Shih says his anti-drone gun - resembling a rifle with two oversised barrels, coupled with a backpack - blocks the drone’s GPS signals and video transmission, forcing it back to where it took off via the drone’s own failsafe features.

a La Land, an ode to Los Angeles, is dominating the early film awards at the Golden Globes, winning four statues including best actor in a musical or comedy for Ryan Gosling and best screenplay for Damien Chazelle. When it came to television, Globe voters awarded newcomers Atlanta and Netflix’s The Crown as the best comedy and best drama, respectively. Both shows are in their inaugural season. Atlanta focuses on cousins navigating the rap scene. “I really want to thank Atlanta and all the, like, black folks in Atlanta,” said the show’s creator Donald Glover. “Just for being alive.” The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, a look at how the football star’s murder trial divided the city of Los Angeles around racial lines, nabbed best TV movie or miniseries. “American justice is anything but blind when race, gender and celebrity are involved,” said producer Nina Jacobson in her victory speech. Sarah Paulson won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie for her role in the show as Simpson’s prosecutor, Marcia Clark. “I feel like I’m going to faint,” Paulson said. “To the man responsible for this, Ryan Murphy, you’ve changed my life.”

“To Marcia Clark, you are an inspiration to me,” she added. Best actress in a TV comedy winner Tracee Ellis Ross used her time at the microphone to address Hollywood’s poor track record with creating shows and films for people of colour. “This is for all of the women, women of colour, and colourful people, whose stories, ideas, thoughts are not always considered worthy and valid and important,” said Ellis Ross. “I want you to know I see you, we see you.” As expected, Viola Davis picked up a best supporting actress award for her work as the wife of an egotistical garbage man in Fences. She dedicated her award to her father, a worker on a race track with a fifth-grade education. Aaron Taylor-Johnson won the first Golden Globe Award on Sunday, picking up a best supporting actor statue for his work as a criminal psychopath in Nocturnal Animals. Billy Bob Thornton also picked up a best TV actor in a drama statue for his performance as an unconventional lawyer in Goliath. In addition to nabbing the best TV drama award, The Crown won a a best actress in a TV drama statue for Claire Foy’s performance as Queen Elizabeth II. On stage, she called the queen “extraordinary,” and

said she “has been at the centre of the world for 63 years.” Host Jimmy Fallon got the show going with a nod to “La La Land’s” opening number, but was hamstrung early in his opening monologue when his autocue broke down. He turned it to his advantage though, later returning to say he had just gotten off the phone with Mariah Carey, who has been widely lambasted for a disastrous performance on New Year’s Eve. Fallon’s opening monologue was peppered with several election-related zingers. He compared US presidentelect Donald Trump to King Joffrey, the mad monarch from Game of Thrones, and said that the Globes was one of the last places in America where the popular vote still mattered, a reference to how Hillary Clinton’s popular vote win was meaningless in comparison to Trump’s electoral college victory. The Trump gibes weren’t limited to Fallon. Meryl

Streep, the winner of the Cecil B. DeMille award for career achievement, slammed Trump for having an “instinct to humiliate.” Best supporting actor in a limited series or TV movie victor Hugh Laurie joked that it would be the last Golden Globes broadcast because Hollywood, foreign and press were outlawed in Trump’s America. With a nod to his arms dealer character in The Night Manager, for which he won the award, he went on to say “I accept this award on behalf of psychopathic billionaires everywhere.” It was a good night for The Night Manager - in addition to Laurie, Olivia Colman nabbed a best supporting actress in a TV movie or limited series award and Tom Hiddleston picked up a best actor statue.

UNWANTED ADVANCES V

in Diesel may be both fast and furious, but he seems to lack tact. In an interview with Brazilian YouTuber Carol Moreira posted on Wednesday, the Fast and Furious actor made things exceedingly uncomfortable as he made unwanted sexual advances to the host, calling her “beautiful” multiple times. The awkwardness

began while Diesel talked about his 1998 film Saving Private Ryan, when he abruptly segued to comment on Moreira’s physical appearance. Moreira grew more tense as his comments persisted. “God, you’re so beautiful,” the actor said. “God, she’s so beautiful. Am I right or wrong? I mean look at her. How am I supposed to do this interview?” Things were made even

more cringeworthy when the actor asked Moreira out to lunch. “Tell me your story. Let’s get out of here,” he continued. “Let’s go. Let’s go have lunch.” Diesel then added: “My God, I love her!” Moreira attempted to get things back on track, only for Diesel to derail the interview once again over their shared love of the video game Dungeons and Dragons. “Guys, really? Look how beautiful she is,” said Diesel. “You guys think this is a joke. How am I supposed to sit here when I’m looking at such beauty? She’s so beautiful. I’m in love. I’m in love with the interviewer!” When Moreira uploaded the

video to her page, she began by noting how awkward and unbearable Diesel behaved and wasn’t sure exactly how to react to his advances. Her statement is translated from Portuguese. “He began to hit on me in the middle of the interview, say that I was pretty, and he interrupted the interview three times to talk about it. I was laughing, completely uncomfortable. I was not sure what to do,” said Moreira. “I just laughed because it was a very delicate situation. I did not like it. At the time I did not know how to react, but you will see that I was uncomfortable, it was not nice that he interrupted my work.”

SCORPIO Take some distance from your work this week, Scorpio. Other people might try to use you for doing their jobs. The challenge is to work smarter not harder by simplifying. Learn to say no more often. SAGITTARIUS Try not to miss or be late in any appointment this week, Sagi. The cosmos is bringing you exciting new beginning and opportunities to build on, so make sure you are prepared for anything that may come your way. The challenge this week is trimming down your expectations on other people. CAPRICORN Feeling stuck? You want to prove yourself to the world this week. Be proactive, Cap. It won’t be easy and you might step on someone else’s shoes but there’s really no way around it. It’s either you give that opportunity a go or a pass. Do whatever it takes and come out of hiding. AQUARIUS When it comes to love you need to follow your intuition, Aquarius. When you turn on your charm, you’re seriously irresistible. If you’re fresh from a relationship which did not work out, let go of the pain instead of letting it take control over what you feel and think. PISCES This week could be filled with nostalgia. You tend to go back to the happy memories from your childhood. You might be missing someone very special that’s why. Live in this dreamy stage for a while but don’t stay too long.

LEO Invest more time in your body, Leo. Health is wealth so make sure you stay healthy and feel fit. Turn a boring week into an exciting week. Do things that just pop up in your mind, especially when love is involved.

VIRGO You deserve a star in all aspects of your life this week, Virgo. Of course, not all things will run smoothly and there will be setbacks every now and then but you handle things with grace and elegance. Reorganize your priorities and focus on your saving goals. Money could be a little bit slippery in your hand this week so just carry a set amount of cash when you go out. GEMINI Everyone loves being in your company this week. You’ll be invited to all sorts of engagements like parties, meetings, hung outs. Unfortunately, conflict could happen in one of your relationships. You will need to stay calm and prove that you’re a great negotiator.

Meet Snow White

I’m a little more wary than my namesake, but give me some time and I’ll soon warm up to you and enjoy a good pat. Unlike those seven dwarfs, I’m more of a play rather than work all day type of girl. They would have called me ‘Cheeky’ I think, if I had been part of their clan. I love playing with toys and running around and I honestly can’t wait to explore my new home. I’d be more suited to a place with older kids, and may be okay with a desexed male bunny. RSPCA NO. 855057

Fit for a champion: The BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition confirmed for Australia German racing driver Marco Wittman has enjoyed a special relationship with BMW Motorsport since his debut in the 2013 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, better known as the DTM. Piloting the BMW M4 DTM in its 2014 debut season, Wittman was able to seal the DTM driver’s championship for BMW Team RMG. The combination took four round victories out of ten, beating some of the toughest tin-top competition in the world in the process. Remaining with BMW Team RMG and his faithful BMW M4 DTM over the last two seasons, Wittman was able to secure a second DTM driver’s championship in 2016, adding a further three race victories to his

tribute to Marco’s achievements.” Developed under the bonnet of the 2015 BMW M4 MotoGP Safety Car, BMW M’s unique water injection system made its production debut on the M4 GTS. Now the M4 DTM Champion Edition’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six uses this system, which sprays a water mist to lower inlet temperatures. This enables increased turbo boost pressure and more aggressive ignition timing, which in turn realises exceptional gains in power and torque. Peak power and torque are rated at 368kW and 600Nm respectively, representing 51kW and 50Nm increases over the regular M4 variant. Offered exclusively with the seven-speed M Double Clutch TOYOTA COROLLA SECA CONQUEST HATCHBACK 2002

Transmission and driving the rear wheels in the best motorsport tradition, the M4 DTM Champion Edition will hit 100km/h from a standstill in only 3.8 seconds, before heading to a limited top speed of 305km/h where conditions allow. Fuel consumption is listed at 8.5L/100km on the combined cycle, with 199g/km CO2. In addition to the track-focused mechanical specification, the BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition remains equipped for everyday use. BMW’s Professional Navigation System with iDrive functionality is standard and the vehicle is also equipped with air conditioning, front and rear park distance control and auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors.

IBRAHIMOVIC RONALDO WINS FIFA WINS CASE OVER PLAYER OF THE YEAR DOPING CLAIM AWARD

A

Swedish court has fined the country’s former national track coach for accusing Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic of doping during his time with Juventus. The Varmland District Court handed Ulf Karlsson a fine of 24,000 Swedish kronor ($A4600) for defaming the striker with comments made during a panel discussion last year. Karlsson said, without presenting evidence, that he was convinced Ibrahimovic doped because he gained 10 kilograms of muscle within one year while at Serie A giants Juventus. He made similar comments to a local newspaper. Though Karlsson later issued an apology to Ibrahimovic, the Sweden striker filed a defamation lawsuit. Ibrahimovic, who has never tested positive for doping during his career, played for Juventus from 2004-06.

Merseyside Police said officers were called shortly after on Thursday December 22 to reports of a burglary at the footballer’s house. Firmino, 25, his wife, Larissa, and one-year-old daughter and baby son were not at home at the time, and moved to a hotel following the incident. Days after the burglary, Firmino, signed by Liverpool from German club Hoffenheim, was charged with drink-driving in Liverpool city centre on Christmas Eve. He is is due to appear in court later this month to face the charge.

Rojas commits to A-League title challenge M

elbourne Victory winger Marco Rojas has ruled a move from the A-League club in the mid-season transfer window despite his red-hot form. Rojas has lit up the league on his return to Victory from German club Stuttgart, scoring nine times and producing seven assists, sparking talk he could return to Europe as soon as this month. But on Tuesday the New Zealander ruled a move away from Melbourne, claiming success with Victory is his only focus. That’s not to say Rojas doesn’t want to find himself in one of the world’s biggest leagues. The 25-year-old left Australia as the A-League’s best player three years ago, joining the Bundesliga club

with much fanfare. He wasn’t able to break into the club’s first team, playing most of his football on loan with top-flight Swiss club Thun. A return to Victory has proved a tonic for both player and club, but Rojas still eyes another crack at European football. “I still have the dreams I had when I was younger. It didn’t work out last time and who knows what will happen,” he said. “When I was over in Europe I was playing better in terms of the middle of the pitch but I didn’t have the end product. “They always said it was a big thing to have that this year is an extremely good platform to then build on and go and fix other stuff. “But I’m extremely happy here. I’m looking

forward to the rest of the season.” Rojas sent a scare through the Victory camp in Saturday’s win over Adelaide after coming off on the hour mark with an ankle injury. He said he would still contend for Friday night’s match against Brisbane Roar as Victory shoot for a sixth straight

league win. “We’re taking it day by day but it’s looking good ... I prefer not to declare that I’ll be alright and something else happens,” he said. “It’s healed well over the last couple of days. It’s all positive signs.” The Roar match begins a tricky run of three matches in eight days, including travel to Wellington and Perth, but Rojas said the squad was embracing the challenge rather than worried about the congestion. “If they said you can play every three or four days and training would be slightly less, any footballer would take it,” he said. “We’ve got good depth in the squad so we can afford to (rotate players). The boss has got to figure out how he wants to do that.”

GREEN DISMISSES Mundine fight concerns << cont. from back page...

“I’m sure Choc’s going to come in at his absolute best because he’s a fierce competitor.” Green, who won his last four fights, has been sparring with two Americans in upand-comer Mike Jimenez and Cedric Agnew, who helped him prepare for his 2009 win over Roy Jones Jr.

He had a small cut on his nose thanks to Jimenez - a sign of his serious preparation. “I owe Mike one, although I think I’ve paid him back,” Green said. “They have contrasting styles - one super fast and super sharp and one is fast, sharp but very strong and keeps me working hard.”

will ratchet up for two men with starkly contrasting emotional histories at Melbourne Park. Defending champion Djokovic will be attempting to add to his Open era record six Australian Open titles while Murray will try to break through for a maiden crown after being five runner-up times - four of them (2011, 13, 15, 16) to his Serbian rival. “Best scenario I could ask for for beginning of the season,” Djokovic said after the Qatar clash which ended a 28-match, five-tournament winning streak by Murray, who had deposed him as No.1. “Playing all five matches in this tournament and then three hours against No.1 of the world, (my) biggest rival, and winning in a thrilling marathon match is something that definitely can serve as a positive incentive for what’s coming up in Australia. “It’s only the beginning of the season, so we had a little laugh at the net about it. We both felt like if every match we’re going to play against each other is going to be this

way this season, we’re going to have a fun time. “Playing against Andy, somehow it feels like playing the mirror image of (me) because we have very similar styles of game. “I can’t recall out of the 35-plus matches how many were kind of one-sided. Most of the matches we play it’s always going down to the very last few points to decide the winner.” Murray didn’t want to read too much into the result at his first tournament of the 2017 season. “Physically it was a good test to start the year, and I did good there,” said the Scot. “Obviously I am disappointed not to win tonight, but I played pretty good the last couple of the matches. “I still think I have a chance of winning the Australian Open after tonight. I don’t think that changes.” The final showcased the

best of men’s tennis for two hours, 54 minutes. Djokovic needed four match points three in the second set and one in the third - to prevail. Djokovic’s frustration got the better of him twice, causing umpire Carlos Bernardes to hand him two warnings, including the loss of a point on the second warning. That came when Djokovic smashed his racquet in frustration at 40-30 to end the 11th game of the second set

prematurely. The first warning came in the sixth game of the first set. Annoyed at losing a point, Djokovic angrily smacked a ball to the ground that flew into the stands and hit a woman. “I definitely didn’t want to hit the ball at anybody,” Djokovic said. “Just happened. Fortunate not to get a bigger fine. I have to be more careful I guess. I accept that I made a mistake.”

BOXING

GREEN DISMISSES MUNDINE FIGHT CONCERNS

D

anny Green has dismissed talk of a weight mismatch in his long-awaited boxing rematch with old foe Anthony Mundine. The pair will do battle at Adelaide Oval on Feb 4, more than 10 years after their first fight in Sydney in 2006, won by Mundine in a unanimous points decision. Three-time world champion Jeff Fenech is among a chorus

of voices calling for the fight to be abandoned, citing size disparity and fearing for the long-term health of 41-yearold Mundine. They will fight at an agreed weight of 83kg, up from the 76.2kg which was the weight limit for their last duel. It’s a big step up from the 69.8kg that Mundine has been fighting at, badly losing his last outing by TKO to American Charles Hatley in

November 2015. But Green, 43, doesn’t believe there will such a weight disaparity between the two. “That’s a fabrication and a misconception that there will be a 10 kilogram difference,” he said. “There will probably be maybe a three or four kilogram difference at most.” Green said he wouldn’t put on weight after the weigh-in

and expected to go into the ring at 84.5 or 85kg, while he expected Mundine to be around 81kg. “Choc has been sitting around 80kg for a long time and he played first grade football heavier than I’ve ever been in my life because I’ve never been 90kg - he’s naturally a heavy guy and came down in weight,” Green said.
