UNDERWORLD FIGURE GUNNED DOWN IN SYDNEY

A

man executed on a suburban street is believed to a member of a family linked to Sydney’s criminal underworld. Police found the man, believed to be 35-year-old Pasquale Barbaro, on an Earlwood footpath after being alerted to a shooting at about 9.40pm on Monday. Early investigations suggest it was a targeted attack and Larkhall Street was cordoned off on Tuesday as forensic teams examined the area. Barbaro’s grandfather and cousin were both killed in gangland hits and there had been unconfirmed rumours Pasquale Barbaro was an informant for the NSW Crime Commission. Gabriela Pintos lives at the end of street and said she heard gunshots late at night. “We heard the gunshots ... another maybe four gunshots and a couple of minutes later there was someone screaming,” she told AAP. Another resident told AAP he heard as a many as seven really loud bangs in two bursts and saw a car speed away. “You knew straight away what it was ...I looked out the front and saw a car speed off,” the man, who wanted to be

identified as John, said. Witnesses also reported seeing a car with three or four men wearing hoodies parked nearby ahead of the shooting. Meanwhile, a burnt out Audi Q7 was found in the nearby suburb of Concord and could be linked to the killing. The death comes two weeks after another crime figure, Hamad Assaad, was shot dead outside his Georges Hall home. Mr Assaad was a key suspect in the execution of standover man Walid Ahmad at a Bankstown shopping centre in April. That killing was thought to be in retaliation for the shooting homicide of Safwan Charbaji outside a nearby panel beater two weeks earlier. Pasquale Barbaro’s grandfather Peter Pasquale Barbaro was gunned down in Brisbane in 1990 while his cousin Pat Barbaro was shot dead in a carpark in Melbourne in 2003. Another cousin, also called Pasquale, was involved in what was described as the world’s biggest ecstasy bust. Some 15 million pills were hidden inside tinned tomatoes and shipped by the Calabrian mafia from Italy to Melbourne.

Police from the NSW Public Order and Riot squad arrive at the scene of a shooting to conduct a street sweep in Larkhall Street in Earlwood, Sydney, Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016. NSW Police found a man, believed to be 35-year-old Pasquale Barbaro, on an Earlwood footpath after being alerted to a shooting at about 9.40pm on Monday.

MAGNITUDE AND DEPTH

Monday’s quake, with a magnitude of 7.8, was much stronger than the magnitude-6.3 quake in 2011. But it also was much deeper - striking 23 kilometres below the earth’s surface. The 2011 quake had a depth of just 5 kilometres. The shallower a quake is, the more destruction it tends to cause.

LOCATION

Monday’s quake struck New Zealand’s South Island in a mostly rural area that’s dotted with small towns. It

caused some damage in Wellington, the capital, more than 200 kilometres to the north. It was also strongly felt in Christchurch, 93 kilometres to the southwest, where residents said the shaking went on for about three minutes. The 2011 quake was centred just 10 kilometres southeast of the centreof Christchurch.

AFTERSHOCKS

Both quakes were followed by a large series of aftershocks, many of them strong. Since Monday’s quake, at least four temblors of magnitude 6.1 or higher were recorded in the region.

DAMAGE

The 2011 quake gutted much of downtown Christchurch, with more than 1,000 central city commercial buildings and 10,000 homes destroyed. Monday’s quake cracked roads and homes, but largely spared the country the devastation it saw from the 2011 quake.

COST

The 2011 quake caused an estimated $NZ40 billion in damage. It’s too early to tell what the cost of Monday’s quake will be, but officials have estimated that the cleanup will run into the billions.

DOCKER DEFENDER JOHNSON IN ALLEGED ASSAULT

V

eteran Fremantle defender Michael Johnson is reportedly under investigation by West Australian police after a Leederville kebab shop patron was allegedly assaulted in the early hours of Sunday. The alleged victim, a Bunbury teacher, reported the matter at his local police station on Monday and also handed over a video of a man, he believes to be the Fremantle star in the shop with his pants down. The teacher then claimed he was caught filming and struck by the man he believes to be Johnson. The footage was shown on the Seven Network in Perth. Fremantle released a statement on Monday and will refrain from further comments until further information was available. “We have been made aware that Fremantle player Michael Johnson, who is on leave, was allegedly involved in an incident in Leederville at the weekend,” the club said. “We are in the process of gathering all relevant information. “We are not in a position to comment further until that process has been completed.” Johnson played only four games for the Dockers last year because of a hamstring injury.

The British singer, who is nearing the end of a 10-month tour to mark her album 25, told Vanity Fair in an interview for its December cover story published on its website on Monday that she would be happy if she never had to tour again. “I’d still like to make records, but I’d be fine if I never heard (the applause) again. I’m on tour simply to see everyone who’s been so supportive. I don’t care about money,” Adele, 28, was quoted as saying. The 10-time Grammy

winner, known for heartwrenching ballads such as Someone Like You and Rolling in the Deep, said she had always been drawn to sad music. “I have a very dark side. I’m very available to depression. I can slip in and out of it quite easily. It started when my granddad died, when I was about 10, and while I never had a suicidal thought, I have been in therapy, lots. “But I haven’t had that feeling since I had my son and snapped out of my postpartum depression,” she added. Adele gave birth to son Angelo four years ago with boyfriend Simon Konecki. “I had really bad postpartum depression after I had my son, and

it frightened me... My knowledge of postpartum - or postnatal, as we call it in England - is that you don’t want to be with your child; you’re worried you might hurt your child; you’re worried you weren’t doing a good job. But I was obsessed with my child. I felt very inadequate; I felt like I’d made the worst decision of my life. It can come in many different forms,” the singer said. Adele acknowledged that her future songs would likely never match those she wrote for her 2011 album 21, which has sold more than 31 million copies worldwide. “I can see from an outsider’s perspective that

I will never write songs as good as the ones that are on 21, but I’m not as indulgent as I was then, and I don’t have time to fall apart like I did then. “I was completely off my face writing that album, and a drunk tongue is an honest one,” she said. Since having a child, Adele said she has quit smoking and now drinks only a couple of glasses of wine a week.

ussian President Vladimir Putin has awarded Russian citizenship to action film actor Steven Seagal. The 64-year-old Seagal has been a regular visitor to Russia in recent years and has accompanied Putin to several martial arts events, as well as vocally defending the Russian leader’s policies. Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov tells reporters that Seagal “has been insistent for a long time in asking to be

granted Russian citizenship,” adding that “he is known for his warm feelings to our country, he never made a secret of it, and he’s also a well-known actor, which gave grounds to make him a Russian citizen.” Other foreign celebrities to be awarded Russian nationality by the Kremlin in recent years are French actor Gerard Depardieu and US boxer Roy Jones Jr.

ADELE ANNOUNCES AUST TOUR

B

ritish singing superstar Adele will tour Australia for the first time next year. The Grammy Award winner announced the special stadium concerts in a 360 degree in-the-round production starting in Perth on February 28 on Tuesday. Adele also released her new single Water Under The Bridge to coincide with the tour announcement. “G’Day it’s me ... I was wondering if after 10 years in the game you’d finally like to meet me in Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide,” she tweeted. The in-the-round production is designed to create intimacy and the venues will have reserved seating on both the playing arenas and the grandstands. Adele kicked off the tour in support of her multimillion selling third album 25 in February in Belfast. Since then she has played

extensively throughout Europe before hitting the US on a string of dates, where she will finish up later this month after a total of 107 sold out shows. Rumours of an Australian tour started earlier this week when a teaser ad showing a close-up of Adele’s eyes was played on Australian TV. Touring company Live Nation landed the coveted Australian gigs, which are likely to be the singer’s final dates on the tour. Adele Australian tour dates: February 28 - Domain Stadium, Perth March 4 - The Gabba, Brisbane March 10 - ANZ Stadium, Sydney March 13 - Adelaide Oval, Adelaide March 18 - Etihad Stadium, Melbourne * Tickets go on sale on November 21.

TRUMP’S TWITTER RETURNS TO FORM

Trump calls protests ‘very unfair’ resident-elect Donald Trump is back to his Twitter rants. In a tweet posted recently, Trump complained about the protests against his forthcoming presidency in

P

large cities across the country. “Just had a very open and successful presidential election. Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!” he wrote. It’s a return to form for Trump, who often expressed

frustrated thoughts on his Twitter account. His tweets since becoming president-elect on Tuesday, however, have remained tame. In fact, Trump had just ten minutes before he tweeted about a “good meeting” with President Obama in

Washington, D.C. Trump’s Twitter had often been a source of controversy. While other presidential candidates largely had carefully curated Twitter accounts, Trump frequently let his unfiltered opinions run in his tweets.

PAYPAL VOICE COMMAND TO GOVT CRACKDOWN ON SEND CASH VIA SIRI ILLEGAL ONLINE GAMBLING

T

he federal government is introducing new laws to help curb illegal online gambling services based overseas. A new bill put to parliament recently makes it clear that only people or companies who hold a licence in Australia can offer its products to Australians. It also prohibits “click to call” in-play betting and gives new powers to Australian Communications and Media Authority so they can enforce new civil penalties and be responsible for the entire

complaint handling process. “The combination of clearer legislation, stronger enforcement measures and awareness-raising activities will assist to ensure Australians are protected from these illegal gambling services,” Human Services Minister Alan Tudge said. The draft laws follow a 2015 review led by former NSW premier Barry O’Farrell, which estimated up to $400 million was being spent on illegal offshore wagering. The Turnbull government in April accepted 18 of the report’s 19 recommendations, with this legislation the first of three stages.

P

ayPal users can now send money to friends and family using just their voice, after the payment service announced it was to integrate into Apple’s Siri. Siri is the voice-based virtual assistant embedded into the iPhone, and can be used to set reminders, answer questions and help with tasks. From Thursday, PayPal said users running iOS 10 on their iPhone will be able to use commands such as “Hey Siri, send John STG25 using PayPal” to transfer money as an alternative to using the official app. Apple’s software uses voice recognition so only the known owner of the device can use the voice commands. PayPal’s Meron Colbeci said consumers in 30 countries would be able to use the new service. “Sending and receiving money from friends and family has long been one of the most popular activities on PayPal. In fact, last year we did $US41 billion in peer-

to-peer (P2P) volume across PayPal, Venmo and Xoom,” he said. “And, with the holidays around the corner, PayPal predicts more than 17 million P2P transactions in the month of December alone. “With so many P2P transactions happening during such a busy season, we’re excited to give our users an early holiday present: starting November 10, Siri will be integrated with PayPal. For iPhone and iPad users running iOS 10, making a payment has never been easier - PayPal users can now send and request money via a voice command with Siri.” The use of voice-based assistants is a growing trend in technology, with both Amazon and Google having recently launched speaker hubs which use voice commands to control other smart, connected appliances around the home, while Microsoft also has its own assistant, called Cortana, built into Windows 10.

NSW trials new SHARK DETECTION TECHNOLOGY

A

new shark detection technology named “Clever Buoy” will be trialled off the coast of Port Stephens, the NSW government has announced.

The collaboration with Australian company Shark Mitigation Systems will use sonar technology to detect the distinctive movement patterns made by sharks and transmit the information to local beach authorities.

Primary Industries Minister Niall Blair says the government will partner with the University of Technology Sydney on a research project that will position a Clever Buoy about 1km off the

coast of Hawks Nest at Port Stephens. The project will assess the buoy’s capacity to detect white sharks in field conditions.

“The way Clever Buoys are integrated into the NSW Shark Management Strategy will depend in part on the nature of the beach and conditions in each locality,” Mr Blair said in a statement on Sunday morning. A series of underwater stereo video cameras will record for up to five hours a day over a four-week period and the images will be compared to the data received from the buoy.

research suggests people believe connecting their whitegoods and gardening tools to the internet will save money and take better care of the environment. Telsyte’s principal analyst Foad Fadaghi said consumers were turning to technology to save money and improve their lifestyles. “Spending on smart home products is expected to increase over the coming years,” he said. Products such as sprinkler systems, robot vacuums and smart heating systems will be able to be accessed by mobile phone apps and fast broadband will give people the confidence to control their appliances from a laptop or tablet.

    CELEBRITY Mel Gibson roars back

with Hacksaw Ridge

I

s Hacksaw Ridge Mel Gibson’s redemption? Is it his atonement, or perhaps his miracle? These terms have all been bandied about in the run-up to Gibson’s first directorial effort in the 10 years since Apocalypto. That movie came out in 2006, only a few months after news broke of Gibson’s drunken anti-Semitic rant, which has plagued his career ever since. But Hacksaw Ridge, the latest contribution to the canon of big World War II films, doesn’t need any

redemptive backstory. Whatever you think of Gibson, and whatever your position on the relevance of his personal flaws to his art, his filmmaking prowess is evident. This big, bruising, viscerally violent yet also often moving film should be judged on its merits. Hacksaw Ridge, starring the goofily appealing Andrew Garfield as the real-life character Desmond Doss, may not be a perfect movie, but it strikes an unusual balance. It’s a violent film whose hero - and moral core -

espouses non-violence. It’s a war film that will also appeal to a faith-based audience. It’s a film that at moments can feel relentlessly corny - and a second later, painfully, horribly real. Doss, a Seventh-day Adventist, was the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honour. An Army medic, he refused to touch a weapon, believing he should be saving lives and not taking them. Many fact-based movies end with some real-life footage.

It’s always welcome, but here, it’s truly exciting to see Doss, alive and speaking (he died in 2006). His is a story you probably didn’t know, and will be glad you did. Gibson does well by it. Hacksaw Ridge, which is leading the nominations at this year’s Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards with 13 nods, including Best Film and Best Direction, was released in Australia on November 3.

ustralian actress Margot Robbie, Warner Bros and producer Denise Di Novi have picked up movie rights to Gin Phillips’ thriller novel Beautiful Things. Robbie who broke out in Martin Scorsese’s Wolf of Wall Street, will produce along with Di Novi and Alison Greenspan, but it’s uncertain if she will star. The deal comes two months after Robbie signed a first-look deal with Warner Bros to develop and produce feature films through her LuckyChap

Entertainment production company. Robbie has starred in three Warner Bros films - Focus, The Legend of Tarzan, and Suicide Squad. She’s starring in a Suicide Squad spinoff as her character Harley Quinn and will executive produce, and will also star in an adaptation of Dean N. Jensen’s Queen of the Air. Robbie is developing a Tonya Harding biopic and an adaptation of Matt Ruff’s Bad Monkeys with Bluegrass Films’ Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark for Universal Pictures. Phillips’ book, sold last month to Viking, centres on a mother and her son trapped in a zoo with a gunman on the loose.

G

rammy-nominated singer Tori Kelly will visit Australia next month to promote the upcoming animated film Sing. Kelly makes her movie debut as the voice of shy teenage elephant, Meena, who is one of a host of animals who enter an X-Factor-style talent show, helmed by a koala played by Matthew McConaughey in the animated movie. Kelly joins a host of big names including Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly and Taron Egerton who all voice the would-be talent on the film created by Illumination, the studio behind Despicable Me. It’s a case of life imitating art for Kelly who was once a contestant on American Idol and has since signed with

Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, to launch her own career culminating this year with a nomination for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards. * Sing is released in Australian cinemas on December 26.

The group unveiled the dark, dystrophic feel of their new material at a special secret gig in inner Sydney a few weeks ago. This forthcoming run of dates will see Birds of Tokyo bringing that same epic rock show to all parts of the country. “When we were writing and recording we kept talking about how we wanted to make a really dark and intense rock record that would be great to play live”, explains group frontman, Ian Kenny. “So we can’t wait to finally crank out these new songs as well as lots of others at some gigs.” Fans of the early Birds of Tokyo work have already

ARIES There are situations this week wherein you know exactly what is wrong but you don’t know how to handle it. You are a born leader, Aries and your armour is thick enough to handle any battle. Keep in control of the situation. It would help to discuss this with people you trust and listen to their opinion.

TAURUS You have too high expectations of others, Taurus. And that applies in your relationship as well. Loosen up your hold on the reigns because not all people are as enthusiastic as you are. In love, reality is that the prince(ss) on the white horse is a dream image. No one is perfect.

8

GEMINI Come out and show yourself in all your glory, Gemini. Don’t be too tied up to the thought of meeting up to other people’s expectations. You have a natural charm and this makes it able for you to beam in the spotlight. Just sweeten the pot so you can seal a deal this week.

CANCER Duality could cause confusion this week, Cancer. One moment you say this and the next moment you coldly state something entirely different. This could put your relationship in danger because your partner wants to have a clear idea of where your relationship is heading.

LIBRA You can boost your attractiveness by paying extra attention to your looks, Libra. Clothing and personal hygiene will give you an irresistible image. You are so dynamic, it’s exhausting. You are doing all kinds of things because you are such a creative person but there is no clear line in it all. Meet Snow White

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who’s the fairest…wait a second I don’t need a fairy-tale to tell you that I’m looking for my happily ever after! I’m a little more wary than my namesake, but give me some time and I’ll soon warm up to you and enjoy a good pat. I love playing with toys and running around and being cheeky. I honestly can’t wait to explore my new home. I’d be more suited to a place with older kids, and may be okay with a desexed male bunny. RSPCA NO. 855057

he Mopar brand announced recently during a press event at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas new Mopar Crate HEMI® Engine Kits that provide enthusiasts a factory-backed, efficient option for plugging Gen III HEMI engines into iconic Mopar vehicles from the 1970s and earlier. The new Mopar 345 Crate HEMI Engine Kit for the 5.7-litre engine and Mopar 392 Crate HEMI Engine Kit for the 6.4-litre HEMI can be paired with model year 1975 and earlier vehicles, enabling owners to inject modern HEMI power into muscle-car era machines such as the Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, Plymouth ‘Cuda and many other makes and models. Challenger weaves together design cues from the past and present to create a uniquely original Mopar creation. The blend of yesterday and today is distinctly visible through exterior and interior styling, but comes to throaty fruition under the hood, where new Mopar-powered products administer a jolt to the heart of the classic 1971 Challenger. The Shakedown Challenger drives 485 horsepower (362kW) to the pavement via a Viper Tremec T6060 six-speed transmission and is further augmented by a Mopar concept cold-air intake and Mopar custom dual exhaust with black powder-coated Mopar exhaust tips. The custom front and rear suspension is lowered, dropping the Shakedown Challenger closer to the road — or to the track — creating a capable performer

MAN UNITED SQUAD BEHIND MOURINHO: HERRERA

anchester United midfielder Ander Herrera played down suggestions of dressing room disharmony at Old Trafford as he thanked manager Jose Mourinho for helping him earn an international call-up. United have made an underwhelming start to life under Mourinho, despite a significant outlay in the summer which saw the club pay a world-record transfer fee for midfielder Paul Pogba. They currently lie six points off the Premier League’s top four and speculation is rife some key members of the squad are unhappy with Mourinho’s methods. But Spaniard Herrera rejected those suggestions. “We have a saying in Spain: you catch the liar before you catch the lame man. It’s true in life and even more so in football,” he said. “If a coach is not straight, players soon find him out. Mourinho is very straight. “He says what he thinks and he says it to your face. He says it when it is something we will like, but he also says it when it is something we won’t like.” The 27-year-old may make a belated senior Spain debut against England at Wembley on Tuesday night, having worked his way into a regular starting role under Mourinho at United. Herrera has been occupying a

t 3-0, the game was already wrapped up, but Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas ran the length of the field anyway. Max Beister had just put the finishing touch on Victory’s third and final goal against Western Sydney on Saturday night, and Thomas got running. He was one of the first players to reach the club’s new signing, laying his great big glove on the German’s head as he celebrated in front of the Victory bench. As someone that started his career feeling on the outer, Thomas knew how much it would mean. “From a personal experience when you come into a football team, the best way to feel involved and part of the club is when

deeper role in United’s midfield and he believes it is a step in the right direction for his career. He added in the Daily Mail: “I have come here because Mourinho has given me the opportunity to take on a new position and I feel comfortable with it. “I’m more defensive now, playing in front of the back four. I think I have that ability to win the ball back quickly when we lose it. “I have taken a leap forward at United which has allowed me to get into the national side.”

you have an impact on game day,” he said on Tuesday. “For him to come in and be scoring, it was the best thing that could have happened for him to feel a part of the club and feel welcome.” Beister, who arrived at Victory on loan from German side Mainz just a few weeks earlier, took a great stride with that goal. The 26-year-old made a perfect start at his new club, but also in rebuilding a long-lost career. Beister has made just one senior start since battling a debilitating ACL injury suffered in early January 2014. Thomas, who was forced to travel a long road himself to earn the nod as Victory’s No.1, could sense it was a special moment for a player who had

I was pretty tired running back actually,” he said. “I thought it was important to share that moment with him. “I think he was really excited and maybe surprised by the atmosphere. “I don’t know if he expected that from Australian football. He came in and said ‘wow it was really loud’ ... I think it’s made a big (impression) on him and making him feel at home.” Without a match this weekend due to the earthquake that has affected Wellington Phoenix’s home ground Westpac Stadium, Beister could improve his conditioning to contend for a first-team berth against Newcastle in their next outing.

Thomas had a personal connection to the earthquake, with a younger brother currently holidaying in New Zealand. “My mum called me a bit worried ... I ended up hearing back from him, he was out quad riding so he was alright,” he said.

DALLAS COWBOYS PROVIDE A BOOST FOR NFL T

he Dallas Cowboys have taken the NFL by storm this season thanks to better-thanexpected performances from two rookies who have quickly become the faces of ‘America’s Team’ and given a jolt to sagging TV ratings. Quarterback Dak Prescott and running back Ezekiel Elliott have been a welcome revelation for a franchise that won three Super Bowl titles during a dominant stretch in the 1990s but have only made the playoffs five times in the last 16 seasons.

The pair have also helped bring some relief to the NFL, which has been in the unusual position of suffering a 14 per cent drop in television ratings across all games this season. The dynamic Dallas duo have led the Cowboys (8-1) to first place with an eight-game win streak, the latest coming in Sunday’s thriller against the rival Pittsburgh Steelers that was the highest-rated NFL telecast of the 2016 campaign. Prescott, a fourth-round pick whose incredible start

has many experts believing long-time Cowboys’ starter Tony Romo has lost his role, has not let the pressure of the toughest job in American sports faze him one bit. As for Elliott, the Cowboys’ fourth overall draft pick was expected to beimmediately productive given his talent and the team’s dominant offensive line but few thought he would be unstoppable. “I expected it out of myself. I’m a guy with high expectations,” said Elliott. “I was put in a perfect situation. I’m surrounded with a lot of great players, and they

make me better.” Elliott scored two of his three touchdowns in the final two minutes of Sunday’s 3530 win, the latest standout performance in a season in which he leads the NFL in rushing and has made a strong case for Most Valuable Player honours. The performances of Prescott and Elliott already have fans of the Cowboys who earlier this year topped Forbes’ list of the world’s most valuable sports teams thinking about the glory days of the 1990s.

on the court today. I was a little bit slow on everything. I was hesitating a lot with my game, my movement,” said Wawrinka, a threetime grand slam champion. Wawrinka holds a 6-7 record at the tournament for the top eight players in the world, but his previous six losses were against Djokovic, Roger Federer

and Rafael Nadal - twice to each. Monday’s loss doesn’t mean Wawrinka is out of the tournament, but it hurts his chances of finishing the year as the No.3-ranked player. Wawrinka, Nishikori and Milos Raonic all have a chance to end up one spot behind Murray and Djokovic.

AUSSIES LOSE TEST SERIES, ALL CONFIDENCE

A

ustralia’s undersiege Test side are at risk of hitting an unprecedented low, having handed South Africa a series victory with yet another crippling batting collapse in Hobart. Australia’s dependence on Steve Smith was laid bare for the second time in the second Test at Bellerive, where the Proteas completed an innings-and-80-run win before lunch on day four - the home side’s fifth straight Test defeat. South Africa claimed an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series on Tuesday, rolling

Australia for 161 at 11.53 AEDT to mark their third consecutive Test series win in Australia. Further ignominy for Smith could come under lights at Adelaide Oval. Never before in the history of the sport has Australia been whitewashed in a Test series on home soil. Based on how the pink ball hooped around in Adelaide last year, there’s likely to be a result in the final Test that starts next Thursday. The hosts tumbled towards a fifth straight Test loss during a collapse of 8-32 in 19.2 overs, with Kyle Abbott

snaring six wickets and Kagiso Rabada striking four times in the stunning session. It was the latest of many woeful batting performances in recent years that has left coach Darren Lehmann, selectors and Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland under immense pressure. Selectors are expected to settle on a squad for the third Test later this week but changes are fully expected, with Adam Voges likely to be dropped. Smith dug in, taking 40 minutes to score his first

runs on day four, but would have been struck with a sense of deja vu as he watched Australia slip from 2-129 to 7-150. The skipper was eventually caught behind on 31. Rain offered more resistance than Australia’s batsmen, with the entire second day abandoned without a ball being bowled. Smith had finished 48 not out on day one, when Australia posted a paltry total of 85 after being sent in by Faf du Plessis. It was the nation’s lowest Test total on home soil since 1984.

CONOR MCGREGOR DEMANDS STAKE IN UFC

His desire, equity in the company, which was recently sold for billions. “They have got to come talk to me now. No one’s come talk to me since the sale has happened,” McGregor said. “As a businessman I’ve been approached like ‘hello’ and that type of stuff, but I’ve earned something. I mean,

who owns the company now? “People have shares in the company, celebrities... Conan O’Brien owns the UFC nowadays, so where’s my share? Where’s my equity? If I’m the one that’s bringing this, they’ve gotta come talk to me now. “I’ve got both belts, a chunk of money, a little family on

the way. You want me to stick around, you want me to keep doing what I’m doing, let’s talk. But I want the ownership now. I want equal share. I want what I earned.” With very few viable challengers available in the featherweight division and his decimation of Alvarez at lightweight it was

suggested McGregor may try and fight at welterweight - but he dismissed the idea, demanding clarity on his financial future. “Whoever runs this whole s**t has to come to me and give me the real slice, because that’s what I’ve earned. I’ve earned this. Biggest gate. Biggest everything.”

ANDY MURRAY WINS IN DEBUT AS WORLD NO.1

aking the court as the world No.1-ranked player for the first time, Andy Murray got the job done. The Wimbledon champion was tested for much of his opening match at the ATP finals but still came out on top, playing in his home country and beating Marin Cilic 6-3 6-2 Monday in London. “After a long, kind of, few months, it’s nice to know that I’m going to be finishing the year playing in that sort of atmosphere,” Murray said.

Murray took over at the top of the rankings last week, replacing Novak Djokovic. But the year-end No.1 ranking is up for grabs and could be decided on Sunday if both Murray and Djokovic reach the final. The prospect of attaining that, however, doesn’t seem to be weighing too heavily on Murray’s mind. “The last few days, I haven’t thought about it too much,” Murray said. “It didn’t change much for me.”

It certainly hasn’t affected his ability to win matches. Murray has won a careerhigh eight titles this season, including a second Wimbledon title in July and a second straight Olympic gold medal in August. Since then, he has won titles in Beijing, Shanghai, Vienna and Paris. The latest victory on Monday didn’t come so easy. Murray struggled to win his service games in the first set against Cilic, but ended up saving all but one of the

five break points he faced in the match. On the other side, he converted four of his five break points. In the early match, Stan Wawrinka finally lost a match at the ATP finals to someone who hasn’t been ranked No.1 in the world. The US Open champion, who has reached the semifinals of the season-ending tournament for the last three years, was beaten by Kei Nishikori 6-2 6-3. “I don’t think I find anything
