LIBERATORE'S VIETNAM CAMEO IRKS BULLDOGS
F
un-loving Tom Liberatore’s cameo for the Vietnam Swans has earned the ire of his AFL club Western Bulldogs. The premiership-winning midfielder unexpectedly took the field at the weekend while on holidays in the south-east Asian country, reportedly booting a goal and spending time in the ruck.
LOWEST PRICES IN THE WEST
“It’s not ideal. Hopefully they (the Vietnam Swans) had some good insurance,” Bulldogs list manager Jason McCartney joked with Melbourne radio station RSN on Tuesday. Liberatore, as well as travelling companion and Bulldogs teammate Luke Dahlhaus, was named as a emergency in the Vietnam team’s AFL Asia Championships campaign.

VIC DRIVER KILLED TWO PEOPLE IN A DECADE
A
man who killed a woman while speeding in a stolen car in Melbourne had previously killed a pedestrian in another accident. Allan Scott McDevitt appeared before the Victorian County Court on Tuesday where he pleaded guilty to culpable driving causing death over a crash in 2015 that killed a 74-year-old grandmother. The 31-year-old was drunk, speeding and doing a burnout on a suburban street in Hadfield when he hit a parked car, which struck Concetta Guzzo as she was standing next to it. Ms Guzzo had just returned home from dinner with her partner on July
26, 2015 when she was killed. McDevitt’s vehicle, which was travelling at 95km/h on the wrong side of the road, struck her partner’s station wagon and it struck her. “The force of the collision caused the car to move sideways and strike Ms Guzzo, and threw her 4.5 metres from where she was standing on the driveway,” prosecutor Stephen Ballek said on Tuesday. Ms Guzzo was taken to hospital but doctors said it was unlikely she would survive her injuries, which included bleeding on the brain and multiple skull fractures. She never regained consciousness and died in hospital three weeks later.
After Ms Guzzo was struck, McDevitt left the scene before returning and admitting his involvement to several neighbours and authorities at the scene. “He said ‘I f***ed up, I did it, get a knife and stab me in the heart’,” Mr Ballek said. Ms Guzzo’s partner, Enzo Bassam, said he had seen McDevitt’s vehicle approaching but had had no time to react other than to brace for the collision in his station wagon. Moments before the crash, McDevitt was spotted speeding and doing burnouts. He was doing it in a car he’d decided to take after its owner left it momentarily, with the engine
running, on a nearby street. The prosecution said McDevitt had also caused caused the death of a woman in Coburg in 2007 when he was a 22-year-old. In that accident, McDevitt had lost control of his car while trying to get around two council vehicles blocking his path. He had mounted the footpath, hitting 53-year-old Hassiba Diab as she walked home with her shopping. She died at the scene. McDevitt returned a blood alcohol concentration reading of 0.08 per cent after the 2007 crash. The plea hearing in the County Koori Court continues.

Melb gold rush heritage hotel demolished
T
he demolition of a Melbourne gold rush era hotel will be investigated by the building regulator. The Corkman Irish Pub in Carlton, built in 1857, was demolished on the weekend despite a “stop work” notice and heritage overlay, says Victoria’s Planning Minister
Richard Wynne. “Two cowboys come along, ignore all demolition and planning permits rules ... and just knock the place over,” he told 3AW on Tuesday. He will refer the matter to the Victorian Building Authority. Attempts by AAP to contact the company behind the
building’s destruction have been unsuccessful. The site had heritage overlay, which requires a council permit before significant changes are made it. But it was not listed on the more powerful Victorian Heritage Register. Before it closed in August, the pub was popular with
students from the nearby University of Melbourne. Some of those students want the developers to be forced to fully restore the building. “The council has the power to order restoration, and it needs to exercise that power,” a student, Duncan Wallace, posted online on Monday.

VENEZUELA PROBES PRISON CANNIBAL DEATHS
V
enezuelan authorities are investigating gruesome accusations that two men were murdered, mutilated by a confessed cannibal then fed to fellow prisoners in a riot at a police detention centre. Families of the two victims, Anthony Correa and Juan Carlos Herrera, said they died earlier in October towards the end of a monthlong disturbance and siege at the overcrowded jail in the western city San Cristobal. “They stabbed my son, hung him to bleed him, then called this man to cut him up. They did the same with the other young man,” Herrera’s father, also called Juan Carlos, told reporters, saying other prisoners had described it to him. Correa’s mother, Luz Sepulveda, said at the end of the siege, she noticed her son was neither in the list
of detainees nor in a group being transported away. “A public prosecutor came out and said he had to tell me something very painful: ‘Your son was one of those they killed and ate’,” she told Reuters from a house where she was in hiding for fear of reprisals for telling the story. Both families said a self-confessed serial killer Dorangel Vargas, known to Venezuelans as “PeopleEater” because of reports he cannibalised victims, had been used by a gang at the jail to dismember the bodies of their rivals. The government has confirmed two deaths but not the circumstances. It has also arrested six policemen accused of helping prisoners. Local opposition member of congress Franklyn Duarte said he has a video proving the cannibalism and would hand it to authorities with
other evidence. Prisons Minister Iris Varela suggested the cannibalism claims might be exaggerated. An official investigator in the town told Reuters that interviews with prisoners had given credence to the families’ version. “The detainees we spoke to said Dorangel ate some body parts,” he told Reuters, asking not to be named. “They (the gang) cooked the (remaining) flesh and gave it to the rest of the inmates with rice. They ate without realising it was two of their companions,” he said, adding the men’s intestines were tossed in pipes and bones burned. The gang also force-fed some body parts to captured rival prisoners and cut the fingers off five inmates who refused to eat the flesh.

he Austrian government says it plans to demolish the house where Adolf Hitler was born and erect a new building in its place in efforts to erase any link to the Nazi dictator’s birthplace. Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka said Monday that “a thorough architectural re-modelling is necessary to permanently prevent the recognition and the symbolism of the building”. Ministry spokesman Karl-
Heinz Grundboeck said that effectively means the house, in the western town of Braunau, will replaced by a new structure. Sobotka says he wants to ensure that any association with Hitler be eliminated at the site, now an occasional place of neo-Nazi pilgrimage. The owner had repeatedly refused to sell the building. It was unclear whether she changed her mind or if the government acted on plans to dispossess her.

wo Polish men are behind bars in Sydney after facing court over allegations they imported more than a tonne of crystallised ecstasy into Australia. Zbroszczyk may apply for release during his next appearance at Sydney's Central Local Court on October 20. He said nothing but to request a Polish interpreter when he appeared via audiovisual link on Saturday. Latusek chose not to appear and will front court again on October 19. It will be alleged the pair imported the MDMA into the country concealed within a cargo of aluminium sheets flown in from Europe, AFP Deputy Commissioner Justine Saunders told reporters on Saturday. The MDMA crystals were seized at a storage facility
in Hornsby during a joint AFP and Australian Border Force operation and equate to more than 4.1 million ecstasy tablets, she said. Police estimate the drugs could be worth $145 million. “This is the fourth largest seizure of MDMA in Australian history and an important outcome for our community,” Deputy Commissioner Saunders said. “The size of this seizure and the amount of
potential harm cannot be understated.” The two Polish nationals face life behind bars over serious drug importation offences if the charges against them are proven. Police say they expect to make further arrests over the mammoth drug haul.

Call: 1300 BIG NEWS has made an election promise for a $200,000 subsidy scheme for personal shark deterrent devices. Labor leader Mark McGowan said under the proposed trial, 1000 devices such as Shark Shield would be available with a $200 state government subsidy. “Allowing people to take individual protective measures, I think, has to be the future,” he told reporters. Mr McGowan said drones could be trialled at populated beaches but were no use at remote beaches where people surfed. He was supported by Rick Gerring, whose 29-year-old brother Ben was fatally mauled by a shark at Falcon on May 31, leaving behind his pregnant fiancee. “Hopefully with the recent years and it makes would test the technology’s to stream live pictures discussions of people talking back to Surf Life Saving sense to test if it can be capability against to each other about these WA operators at some used effectively to make our environmental factors, such devices then more people metropolitan and regional beaches safer,” he said on as weather conditions and will take them up and we beach geography, and would can protect more surfers beaches. The most recent was 60-year-old university lecturer Doreen Ann Collyer, who was mauled while diving with a friend about one kilometre off Mindarie on June 5. The state government’s shark strategy includes aerial and beach patrols, monitoring and tagging, beach enclosures, and research into deterrents and shark behaviour.
MARRIAGE OF FORMER NUNS SADDENS POPE NOTORIOUS WARLORD
P
ope Francis was upset to hear that two former nuns had married in a civil ceremony in Italy, Vatican Deputy Secretary of State Archbishop Angelo Becciu says. “How much sadness on the Pope’s face when I read him the news of the two married ‘nuns’!” Becciu tweeted on Friday. Federica and Isabel were joined in a civil union in northern Italy last month, taking advantage of a law passed this year that offers homosexual couples legal recognition -- one of the last countries in the West to do so.
The pair, who did not give their surnames, told La Repubblica on Friday that they had fallen in love while serving as missionaries in the West African country Guinea-Bissau. Federica, 44, comes from Italy and Isabel, 40, comes from South America. They said they could have done what other nuns did and live together in a convent while hiding their relationship, but said this would have been “false”. “There are many such cases where priests or nuns hide their relationships with men or women,” the pair were quoted as saying, adding that they had
received no help when they left their religious order. “We felt alone, more than that, we felt abandoned.” The Italian Bishops Conference came out firmly against the government’s Civil Union bill, arguing that it undermined the status of traditional families. The Church teaches that homosexuality is not sinful but homosexual acts are, and that homosexuals should try to be chaste. However, Pope Francis said in June that Christians and the Roman Catholic Church should seek forgiveness from gay people for the way they had treated them.
“(Gay people) should not be discriminated against. They should be respected, accompanied pastorally,” he told reporters.

CROWE POLICE REPORT
Africa bid to trade ivory rejected N U amibia and Zimbabwe have failed to convince a UN body that they should be allowed to export ivory, while Swaziland lost a bid to sell ivory horn - moves they all argued would protect rather than endanger big animals. Member states of the United Nations’ Convention on International Trade in
Endangered Species (CITES) voted overwhelmingly at a conference to reject the proposals to sell tusks and horns seized from poachers, are taken from animals that die naturally, or have been put down by the state . “African elephants are in steep decline across much of the continent due to poaching for their ivory, and opening up
any legal trade in ivory would complicate efforts to conserve them,” said Ginette Hemley, the head of the CITES delegation for conservation group WWF. “It could offer criminal syndicates new avenues to launder poached ivory.” South Africa, home to most of the world’s rhinos, has been the epicentre of
the horn killings. In 2007, 13 rhinos were poached in South Africa, a number that leapt to 448 in 2011, and reached a record 1,215 in 2014. In 2015, 1,175 were poached. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of elephants have been slain, mostly in east and southern Africa.
DRIVERLESS BUS A WEIRDLY NORMAL EXPERIENCE
I
s it weird sitting in a driverless shuttle bus as it slowly drives you along a Melbourne road? No. In fact it’s almost unsettling how quickly normal it seems. The Transdev shuttle humming through Albert Park on Sunday is already in full use in Europe, moving at a top speed of 40km/h. If you’ve ever been a passenger in a bus or even in a theme park ride, the experience is similar. There’s an emergency stop button and an automated ramp that slides out when needed. There’s no magic to it - and
that’s kind of the point. Every company executive in Melbourne for this week’s 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems has stressed the need for safety, and most of the innovations are designed to reduce crashes, keep people alive and fit seamlessly into everyday life. The Siemens car has next generation wi-fi technology, which talks to other cars, motorbikes and even sensors built into the road. It can send real-time video from other cars and give drivers a walkie-talkie function to talk to each other nearby.
The car flags upcoming road works, crashes, hazards such as oil or ice and counts down until the traffic light turns green. Police cars can use the wi-fi to change lights to green in an emergency. It’s the stuff of the future but not far away from being available for the mass market. Some US cars released in 2017 will have the wi-fi
technology, with European and Asian models following in 2018. That means it won’t be long before these magical new inventions become just another mundane part of commuting.
S rapper Azealia Banks has filed a police report after Russell Crowe allegedly “attacked” her at a Beverly Hills dinner party. Banks claims the confrontation happened in the Oscar-winner’s hotel suite and is “disgusted” with how the incident has been reported. Crowe, Banks and about 10 other attendees were in the suite on Saturday night. “She did file a police report after the incident,” Banks’ representative told Us Weekly magazine “She wants to go back to New York. “She’s very distraught. “She’s not comfortable being in LA after what happened.” TMZ, quoting witnesses, reported the incident flared when Banks laughed out loud at Crowe’s music selection at the party and called him and at least one other guest “boring white men”. Banks was a guest of Crowe’s friend, rapper RZA, at the Beverly Hills Hotel
gathering. Crowe reportedly put Banks in a bear hug and physically removed her from the suite after she grabbed a glass and made “bloody threats”. Banks claimed Crowe choked, spat and used the N-word on her. TMZ claims guests, including RZA, said it was Banks who used the N-word, not Crowe. “She is very, very disgusted by the reports,” Banks’ representative told Us Weekly. “The reports out there don’t even remotely resemble what actually happened. “She was attacked.” It is not the first time Banks has become embroiled with an Australasian. Last year, she hit out at Australian rapper Iggy Azalea. “I just really want to know what your fascination with Black women is,” Banks wrote on Twitter. “Why do you want to act like us.”

GOOGLE'S NEW LINE-UP OF PHONES AND GADGETS G
oogle is taking a page from Apple's playbook by making a bigger push to build its own hardware. The Pixel phone is one of several gadgets Google announced recently in San Francisco. NEW PHONE, NEW BRANDING, NEW MARKETING Google's previous phones, dubbed Nexus, had limited distribution. Now, the company is casting aside the Nexus name in favour of Pixel, a brand that hardware chief Rick Osterloh said has "always represented the best of hardware and software
designed by Google". Advance orders began on Tuesday starting about $US650 ($A851) for the five-inch version and $US750 for the slightly larger 5.5-inch screen. One of the advantages Google phones have long had is their quick access to Android updates. With other phones, individual manufacturers and carriers have to approve changes, resulting in delays. Google promises a spectacular camera and unlimited online storage for phones at full resolution. When storage space on the phone is low, the Pixel will
free up storage and rely on the online copy. Apple takes a similar approach with its iCloud Photo Library, though free storage is limited to 5 gigabytes, or a few thousand photos. IT'S IN YOUR HEAD Google's new virtual-reality headset, Daydream View, will differ from other headsets like Samsung's Gear VR in having a companion motion controller and compatibility with a wide range of phones, including Pixel. Daydream is also a challenge to more sophisticated, but expensive systems from Facebook's Oculus business, HTC and
Sony, as well as to Google's own Cardboard effort. Cardboard is cheap available for as little as $US15 - but it doesn't offer much control over VR environments beyond pushing a button on the headset as you move your head. The new wireless motion controller for Daydream can function like a fishing rod, a steering wheel or a pointer to permit more sophisticated VR experiences. Daydream View and the controller will be out in November for $US79. You'll need a new Android phone, as existing phones won't have

Google also plans to share design guidelines with other manufacturers to make Daydream headsets and controllers. AN ECHO OF AMAZON'S ECHO Google is promoting its new Home smart speaker as a way to access Google's knowledge - hands-free. Home will be able to perform many of the same tasks as Echo, Amazon's internetconnected speaker. Both will use voice commands to play music, field questions and control home appliances _ assuming you've installed "smart" versions of them. If you're feeling creepy about a speaker listening to your conversations, Google says you can turn the microphone off. Home will be available on November 4 for about $US130. The cylindershaped Echo costs $US180, though Amazon also sells a smaller version shaped like a hockey puck that sells for $US50. WHAT ELSE? Google's new videostreaming device, Chromecast Ultra, will support a higher-resolution video format called 4K. Larger, more expensive streaming devices such as the $US100 Amazon Fire TV already do that. Ultra will cost $US69.
Meanwhile, Google wants to improve Wi-Fi in the home by creating its own router. The new Google Wi-Fi system will cost about $US130 for the main device. A three-pack for larger homes will cost about $US300. BEYOND HARDWARE Google predicts artificial intelligence will play a greater role in our lives. Chief executive Sundar Pichai said computing was moving to an AI-first world, just as it moved to a mobile-first world just a few years ago. "Our goal is to build a personal Google for each and every user," Pichai said. "We want to build a Google for each user." Google services along those lines include Google Assistant, software that's designed to answer questions and retrieve information, conversation-style. Google Assistant made its debut in a chat app called Allo a few weeks ago. It will also be part of Home and the new Pixel phones. The features demonstrated seem similar to what Amazon and Apple already offer with their virtual assistants. Google officials have repeatedly emphasised its AI technology is in the early stages - so it remains to be seen what this new era for Google will lead to.

hell on earth A
ctor Tom Hanks says while his latest film tackles overpopulation creating hell on earth, humanity has more to fear from its own ignorance. Ahead of the world premiere of Inferno, the latest in the Dan Brown series which features Hanks’ return as symbologist Robert Langdon, the US actor said the film aimed to enlighten audiences about real issues as well as entertain. Inferno, the third film following on from Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code, takes a darker tone and brings together an international cast, including Bollywood’s Ifran Khan, Felicity Jones from the UK and French comedian Omar Sy. As readers and audiences have come to expect from Brown’s novels and the film adaptations, the plot references a historical text, this time Dante’s early renaissance epic poem Divine Comedy, and his
description of hell. Largely set in Dante’s hometown of Florence, but also Venice and Istanbul, the film takes place over 24 hours, with Langdon racing to save the world from a virus, created by billionaire Bertrand Zobrist who wants to save the world from overpopulation by wiping out half of humanity. Zobrist’s dire warnings about humanity and the world’s population trebling in 80 years are based in fact, director Ron Howard said. But despite humanity overloading the world, the villain isn’t necessarily humanity itself. “I think it’s about a crisis,” Howard told journalists in Florence on Thursday. “I don’t think humanity is the villain ... I would say society, because it’s not tackling the crisis head on, it’s creating a vacuum and in that vacuum an extremist has moved in - this is what happens in society.
“This (is a) larger looming crisis that needs to be addressed but politicians and general citizens don’t necessarily want to face it.” Similarly, Hanks said the film deals with a global reality. “You don’t have to look very far to see a hellish example of what overpopulation can do to a nation or to an area,” he said. “There are plenty of places where environmental or economic chaos reigns because quite frankly there’s too many people there.” The outspoken environmentalist, who in the past has donated to Democratic Party presidential campaigns, lamented the tendency “to embrace some form of very simplistic answers to extremely complicated problems” and said “the biggest threat to humankind is ignorance and the embracing of ignorance”.
BIEBER MUST SIT DEPOSITION OR FACE ARREST
A
Florida judge has ordered pop star Justin Bieber to sit down for a deposition within the next 30 days or face the
threat of being arrested and brought to court. Circuit Judge Jerald Bagley issued the order on Wednesday in Miami.
The order compels Bieber to sit for a deposition in a lawsuit filed by a photographer who got into an altercation with one of

the deposition. Attorney Mark DiCowden says Bieber isn't entitled to any special treatment just because he's a celebrity.
Bieber's attorney, John Atkinson, didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Ben Stiller
reveals prostate cancer battle B en Stiller has announced during an interview on the Howard Stern Show that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago when he was 48. The actor on Tuesday opened up about how he was able to detect and treat the cancer. “It came out of the blue for me,” Stiller said. “I had no idea.” Stiller took part in the interview to help spread awareness, and talk about the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) -- a blood test used to measure protein levels, which can help identify prostate cancer. “So, I had cancer a couple of years ago and I wanted to talk about it,” Stiller tweeted on Tuesday morning. “And the test that saved my life.” His tweet linked to an article he published on Medium titled, “The Prostate Cancer Test That Saved My Life.”
“I got diagnosed with prostate cancer Friday, June 13th, 2014. On September 17th of that year I got a test back telling me I was cancer free,” Stiller wrote in the article. “The three months in between were a crazy roller coaster ride with which about 180,000 men a year in America can identify.” In the article he explains the controversy surrounding the PSA test -- it runs the risk of leading to overtreatment like radiation or surgery -- but the actor ultimately resolves that, from personal experience, he can endorse the test. “I think men over the age of 40 should have the opportunity to discuss the test with their doctor and learn about it, so they can have the chance to be screened,” he wrote. “After that an informed patient can make responsible choices as to how to proceed.”

Madonna mulled becoming
nun or movie star A
job application from 19-year-old Madonna - hoping for a starring role in an erotic thriller - has drawn applause from literature lovers. The teenager was a drummer in 1978 and keen to make headlines in the movies when she wrote a covering letter asking to appear in A Certain Sacrifice - her first film role. She told first-time filmmaker Stephen Lewicki that she knew she wanted to be “a nun or a movie star” by the time she was in fifth grade. The personal text, written decades before Madonna
would go on to be the Queen of Pop, was read to an audience at the Letters Live evening in central London, an event which celebrates remarkable letters and the enduring power of correspondence. Madonna states that her career began “in petulance and precociousness” in her home town of Detroit, Michigan. Madonna tells Lewicki that she did unfulfilling dancing tours in Italy, sang in a New Wave band, worked with a filmmaker and modelled for artists and photographers before being spotted by French record producers in May 1979. She worked across Europe but did not really like it. Paris had a “sterility” and so she headed back to New York to play the drums, take dance classes and wait for her 20th birthday. Madonna signed off the letter with her personal detail - including her height at 5ft 4ins, her weight at 102lbs, plus stating she had brown hair and hazel eyes. She got the part, the audience heard.
KARDASHIANS HALT PRODUCTION OF SHOW << cont. from cover...
The show returns on October 23, and the premiere date will not be moved, in light of production temporarily stopping. Production stopping comes after Kardashian West was held at gunpoint by masked men in her Paris hotel, on Monday around 3am. The reality star was bound at her hands and feet and
locked in a bathroom, while the robbers stole more than $US10 million ($A13 million) of jewellery and other valuables, including mobile phones. Her husband, Kanye West, was alerted of the emergency during a concert, which he abruptly ended to tend to his wife and family. The couple is now heading back to their home in LA.

AQUARIUS A difficult choice concerning your love life has to be made this week. Make a clear choice because you won’t get anywhere if you are stuck between two lovers. Don’t leave either of them hanging. You’re being unfair that way. If you’re still confused, listen to the advice of friends or family.
PISCES Your love life is in the spotlights this weekend. Someone is trying to cause disagreements between you and your partner. That could be because of jealousy. Believe in the power of love and just go your own way, Pisces. Don’t lose your balance because of this.

I am a very sociable kitty, so I love it when I have people to talk to! I am very talkative – just ask me! I am very affectionate and I like getting attention, so the more people in your family the better! I am easy to look after because I only need a small brush throughout the week, and I never complain. If you already have a friendly, de-sexed feline friend, we might be great room-mates! RSPCA NO. 852578

The End of Range Anxiety BMW INTRODUCES FLAGSHIP i3 94AH TO AUSTRALIA
T
he ground-breaking BMW i3 electric vehicle range has been expanded to four with the introduction of two additional variants that feature significantly increased battery capacity and range capability. As per the existing variants, the updated i3 – known as the 94Ah – is available in two versions: the Battery Electric Vehicle (EV) and the Range Extender. The BMW i3 94Ah embodies BMW i’s latest innovations in providing the cleanest urban driving experience possible. As a result, the BMW i3 94Ah continues to score significantly better than a modern diesel or petrolengined car in the overall CO2 balance, where factors such as supply chain, production, service life and
recycling are considered. In the updated i3 application, the high-voltage lithium-ion battery consists of eight modules with twelve storage cells located within each module. Cooled via the air-conditioning’s coolant system, the cellinternal packages have been optimised with increased electrolytes, resulting in a gross battery energy increase to 33kWh, of which 27kWh can be effectively used. For reference, the existing i3’s 60Ah capacity produces 22kWh gross with 19kWh of useable energy. For the new i3 94Ah in EV form, the NEDC cycle range rated at 310km, while real-world range in everyday conditions – using equipment such as air-conditioning and the audio system – is up to 200km. Electricity consumption
has also improved by 0.3kWh/100km, to 12.6kWh/100km; further proof of the BMW i engineer’s labours. Opting for the new i3 94Ah Range Extender increases the NEDC-rated range to 390km, thanks to the addition of a two-cylinder petrol-powered combustion engine. This translates to a real-world figure of 330km. Fuel consumption as per NEDC is 0.6L/100km on the combined cycle, with 11.3kWh/100km electricity consumption. Showcasing a continued thirst for innovation, BMW i and technology partner Samsung SDI have managed to realise the substantial battery capacity increase despite unchanged exterior dimensions, thanks to continued investment in the latest lithium-ion battery
technologies. This success also proves the futurefocused, adaptable design of the i3’s CFRP architecture, itself a world-first in a volume production vehicle upon release. As before, the vehicle is designed to allow a single battery module to be exchanged if a fault is detected. If a fault develops, this saves cost and time over a complete battery replacement. This is a stand-alone feature within the competitive field and represents an integral component of the holistic BMW i concept of sustainability. Importantly, the battery pack is designed to last the entirety of the i3 94Ah’s service life, but for further peace of mind all BMW i3 customers receive an eightyear or 100,000km battery
warranty. The BMW i3 94Ah’s eDrive synchronous electric motor generates 125kW of power with an instantaneous 250Nm of torque. Drive is taken to the rear wheels via a single-speed automatic transmission that enables uninterrupted torque delivery to the limited 150km/h top speed. Weighing 1,245kg, the new i3 sprints to 100km/h in only 7.3 seconds in pure Electric Vehicle form, and its performance is delivered with a smooth efficiency that is unique to the BMW i3. Thanks to instantaneous torque delivery and constant drive, the i3 94Ah can also accelerate between 80120km/h in only 5.1 seconds, figures that are on-par with the BMW 440i Coupe. Opting for the i3 with Range Extender adds an
efficient 650cc two-cylinder petrol engine, located above the rear axle and generating 28kW. This smooth, quiet small-capacity petrol engine powers the generator and operates on a needs base, extending total range by up to 130 kilometres in everyday operation. Fed by a nine-litre fuel tank, the i3 94Ah Range Extender tips the scales at an additional 120kg over the EV (1,365kg). Thanks to the fuel tank’s position at the front of the vehicle, luggage volume is unchanged at 260 litres, which can be extended to 1,100 litres with the rear seats folded down. The BMW i3 94Ah Range Extender accelerates from zero to 100km/h in 8.1 seconds, while consuming a scant 0.6L/100km and producing CO2 emissions of just 12g/km.

FEAR FACTOR DID IT FOR MELBOURNE CITY

<< cont. from back page...
Sun. "They said we're going to fear (Victory) coming in here. I don't think we feared nothing," Cahill told Fox Sports. Of course, while motivation is one thing - having the talent, fitness and strategy to pull off the win is another. Brattan was one of the busiest men on the park, bustling between defence and attack to allow John van 't Schip's side to monster possession and starve Victory of opportunities. The 26-year-old credited City's backroom staff for
improving his conditioning after arriving less than gamefit. The Manchester City player was loaned to Bolton Wanderers last season but didn't make a start for the club. "I wasn't playing a lot, wasn't training regularly. (Last year) just was not a great year," he said. "I didn't come back in great shape but the medical staff have got me in great shape now. "I had a bit of a problem with my back but that's all sorted now too."

Arsenal in a good space: Theo Walcott
T
heo Walcott believes Arsenal’s past two wins show they have the right mentality to win silverware. The Gunners played with 10 men for the last 20 minutes of Saturday’s 3-2 English Premier League win over Swansea as the visitors threatened to come from behind, having won at Arsenal in the past two seasons. Walcott was virtually gifted a brace to set Arsenal on their way before Gylfi Sigurdsson stole possession off Granit Xhaka to reduce the arrears at halftime. Mesut Ozil, on his 28th birthday, put the hosts two goals ahead after the restart but a first goal for Swansea’s record signing Borja Baston left Arsene Wenger’s side hanging on, especially after Xhaka was sent off for bringing down Modou Borrow. The win means Arsenal are level on points with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League and follows a last-gasp victory
over Burnley before the international break. “The Burnley match was a game where we had to grind it out. This game, when we went down to 10 men, we tend to lose, to be honest. There’s some things that are slowly getting better,” he said. “We’ve been in this situation (top of the table) before. “We started off this season before than we have recently. There’s always some sort of blip but hopefully we’re not going to have that this year. “With the squad we have, if we keep players fit, with players coming back, then who knows... You can’t really call the Premier League this year. It’s so unpredictable.” Most of Wenger’s sides throughout his 20 years at the helm have been accused of not being able to grind out those results but Walcott feels it is proof that the current squad has matured and is ready to challenge for honours.

Dees recruit Lewis hurt by Hawks AFL offer J
ordan Lewis has opened up about his AFL trade to Melbourne, admitting he was stung to learn Hawthorn couldn't guarantee his place in the side beyond next season. The Hawks on Tuesday granted Lewis a trade to the Demons, who offered the 30-year-old a three-year deal after being approached by his management about a possible move. Melbourne will gain Lewis and picks 57 and 68 in exchange for picks 48 and 66 in a bargain basement deal which suggests the Hawks remain motivated to clear space in their salary cap for trade target Jaeger O'Meara and new recruits Tom Mitchell and Ty Vickery. Like fellow four-time premiership star Sam Mitchell, Lewis had been keen to play out his career with the Hawks but was encouraged by coach Alistair Clarkson to consider his future in a "difficult" postseason conversation. "You do go through a lot of emotions, some good, some bad," Lewis told reporters. "It was probably a hard
thing to take because as players, you feel like you can play forever. "I'm certainly well aware of where I'm at in my career. I don't feel like my performances are slowing down so it was hard for me to try and look beyond that." Lewis said he had no hard feelings about the trade and remained friends with Clarkson, adding that he had never been asked to take a pay cut and the Hawks had not raised their salary cap issues with him. The Hawks will now line up next season without reigning best and fairest Mitchell who has been traded to West Coast for pick 88 in a steal for the Eagles - and runnerup Lewis. Lewis, a 2014 All-Australian who notched 264 games for the Hawks, said Melbourne was the only side he had ever considered joining, despite interest from Gold Coast. After winning four flags with Hawthorn, Lewis said he was keen to take on the challenge of leading the young Demons back to the finals. "For me, they're knocking
on the door," he said. "That was probably one of the deciding factors, along with knowing some of the people here." Lewis confirmed there was a chance he may have been made captain of the Hawks next year but said he was not eyeing the captaincy at Melbourne. The departure of Lewis and Mitchell paves the way for Hawthorn to build a war chest for the 2017 trade period, when Fremantle star Nat Fyfe and Richmond's Dustin Martin will become restricted free agents. "It is disappointing to lose Jordan, however we felt it was the right decision for all parties to facilitate his request for a trade to Melbourne," Hawks list manager Graham Wright said. "With Jordan and Sam moving on it opens up opportunities for our young midfielders to step up and further their development."
BULLDOG HAMLING JOINS DOCKERS IN AFL TRADE W
estern Bulldogs premiership defender Joel Hamling has been traded to Fremantle after requesting a return to Western Australia. Hamling, who played a key shutdown role on
Sydney superstar Lance Franklin in the Bulldogs’ AFL grand final win, will join the Dockers in exchange for pick 35, along with a swap of later picks. The 23-year-old is the latest West Australian
lured home by the Dockers during this year’s trade period, joining former Hawks wingman Brad Hill and ex-Greater Western Sydney forward Cam McCarthy.

Kyrgios ban too light: sport psychologist T
ennis Australia has defended Nick Kyrgios's conditional eight-week ban after a leading sports psychologist branded the suspension too soft. Kyrgios will be free to return to the ATP Tour on November 7 if "he enters a plan of care under the direction of a sports psychologist". Otherwise the world No.14 won't be allowed to compete again until the Australian Open starting on January 16. "You're not going to solve Nick's issues in three weeks," Jeff Bond told AAP on Tuesday after the ATP also hit Kyrgios with an additional $US25,000 ($A32,600) fine for his Shanghai Masters meltdown last week. "I'm an optimist but the thing that worries me now is that he's had both arms twisted up behind his back to actually consult with somebody. "And that's obviously not the right motivation to want to do that. "If it was me, I'd want to look him right in the eye and ask him: 'Why are you doing this? Are you doing this because you have to or because you really want to?'" Bond, who worked with former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, urged Kyrgios to fully commit to getting his head right before resuming his playing career. "Don't take the easy way out and reduce your suspension to three weeks," he said. "Cop it sweet." Tennis Australia believes the governing body of
“
men's tennis has got the sanctioning right. "The tour had no choice but to give him this ban, but I don't think throwing the book at someone or throwing away the key is going to help anybody in this situation," said TA spokesman and the organisation's former head of men's tennis Todd Woodbridge.
Agassi was a guy who was troubled and whose marriage fell apart," he said. "He had some addictive issues that he dealt with and he's turned that around to be one of the real positives of sport. "If everybody had abandoned Agassi, we wouldn't have one of the great philanthropists in sport." ATP boss Chris Kermode claimed Kyrgios was "distraught" about his poor behaviour in Shanghai, where he blatantly gave up his second-round match against Mischa Zverev, and said it was important the game reached out to him. "He is a young athlete with a huge amount of talent for whom the spotlight is sometimes too much," Kermode said. "The saddest part is that to the outside world it comes across that he doesn't care. But it's actually a defence mechanism to deal with the situation. "He needs to channel that. A lot of it is immaturity but you learn through experience. "We took the view he needed to be suspended and there is also an obligation not to be just the policeman but to try and help as well."
HE IS A YOUNG ATHLETE WITH A HUGE AMOUNT OF TALENT FOR WHOM THE SPOTLIGHT IS SOMETIMES TOO MUCH "It has finished the season off for him. "Is it too light? I think it's what was required. I don't think just abandoning him is going to help at all. "This is showing that there needs to be some remorse taken for his actions and some accountability. "But it's also understanding that at 21 he's still a young guy living out all of his issues under a spotlight in front of the world's media and that's not easy for anyone to do. "The tour and the tennis fraternity need to be sure that we're trying to help him overcome those issues because it's better not just for him but also for the sport." Woodbridge likened the prodigiously talented but mercurial Kyrgios to a young Andre Agassi. "Of course Nick hasn't won majors like Agassi had, but
PINK BALL TO LIFT CRICKET’S APPEAL: CLARKE M
ichael Clarke has thrown his support behind day-night Tests, insisting they have the power to boost the public appeal of cricket’s oldest format. Clarke expressed concerns about the innovation in 2014 but was thoroughly impressed by last year’s inaugural day-night Test at Adelaide Oval. The former Australia skipper, who retired following last year’s Ashes in England, has always been adamant that Test cricket should remain the sport’s pinnacle for all parties. Clarke believes pink-ball contests could help ensure that is the case. “Anything that increases the appeal of and the audiences for Test cricket ... any innovation that brings more people to the game, I’m all in favour of it,” Clarke wrote in his autobiography. “If that means playing more day-night Test cricket, that is good. “There are many ways of improving cricket as a spectacle, and the first day-night Test match, in Adelaide in 2015 between Australia and New Zealand, offered us a glimpse of the future. “It seems to me that more people were going to watch the day-night Test match because of the timing: they
could do it after work or school.” Clarke added that “a lot of money has been spent marketing the T20 format. Now, I think the emphasis has to go back onto Test cricket”. The pink ball looked nearunplayable at times during the inaugural day-night Test, when Peter Nevill’s 66 was the highest score of the match and Australia hurtled to a three-wicket win over New Zealand late on day three. The script was significantly different but cricket’s second day-night Test delivered another thrilling finish on Tuesday morning (AEDT). Pakistan recorded a 56run victory over West Indies, a result that will double as a pink-ball confidence boost ahead of their day-night Test against Australia at the Gabba in December. The Dubai contest was decided late on day five after an impressive Darren Bravo ton threatened to deliver the visitors a come-from-behind win. Predictably the surface in the United Arab Emirates was nowhere as green,
while opener Azhar Ali had no issues picking up the pink ball on day one of the Test. Azahar’s unbeaten 302 gave Pakistan a firstinnings total of 3(dec)-579 but their dominance was later subdued by a secondinnings haul of 8-49 from West Indies legspinner Devendra Bishoo. Pakistan paceman Wahab Riaz raised concerns about how the ball deteriorated in the post-dinner session. “It is difficult and we are having problems with it, specially under the lights,” Wahab said during the game. “The first two sessions are fine but in the third session there is a lot of dew and the ball gets wet, the seam gets swollen. “When we bowled with the same ball the next day, the ball was very soft and it doesn’t do anything off the pitch. We neither got conventional swing nor reverse-swing.”

elbourne City's derby heroes have revealed the origins of their revved-up performance in Saturday night's A-League trouncing of Melbourne Victory.
