Police flag end for Melb drug festival

P

olice have cast doubt over the future of a Melbourne music festival where dozens of revellers were treated for serious drug overdoses over the weekend. Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane says police will meet with organisers of the Electric Parade Music

Festival to discuss whether they should be allowed to host future events after a number of revellers were left in a critical condition on Saturday. Paramedics treated 25 people at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and a further seven were found collapsed in nearby parks and streets.

V

ictoria will extend a ban on portable ethanol burners linked to house fires as authorities consider a national ban. The state government enforced an interim 60day ban on selling portable decorative ethanol burners in December, but announced

today it’s extended the ban for another 30 days. Consumer Affairs Minister Marlene Kairouz says the burners have caused at least 29 house fires and seriously injured more than 100 people and warned the public to stop using ethanol-fulled burners at home immediately.

ADOLF HITLER’S PHONE SELLS FOR $316,500

A

telephone owned by Adolf Hitler has sold at a US auction for $US243,000 ($A316,483). Andreas Kornfeld of Alexander Historical Auctions says the phone sold on Sunday afternoon to a person who bid by phone. The auction house does not

disclose the names of buyers. Bidding for the phone started at $US100,000. The red telephone includes a Nazi party symbol and Hitler’s name engraved on the back. Occupying Russian officers gave the phone to a British officer, Sir Ralph Rayner, during a visit to Hitler’s bunker in Berlin. The phone was used in vehicles and trains as well as Hitler’s field headquarters. Kornfeld says a porcelain figure of an Alsatian dog, also owned by Hitler, also sold on Sunday to a different bidder for $US24,300.

refused to say how they came by the cash. Judge Geraldine Davison said the pair must have known the money was the proceeds of criminal offending, with Pereira making similar short trips to Australia in the past. His bag was found to contain more than $270,000 alongside T-bone steaks while Choi’s bag had almost $250,000 concealed beside a tray of lamb chops. Based on time already served in custody, Pereira will be released on September 4 this year and Choi on June 4. Judge Davison said it was not surprising the pair had pleaded guilty after being “caught red-handed” with the money in their bags and with trying to mask its smell from the dogs. In addition to the jail terms, she also ordered them to forfeit the cash.

wo Singaporean men used T-bone steaks and lamb chops to mask the smell of more than $500,000 in cash that they were trying to illegally take out of Australia, a court has heard. Ryan Marc Pereira and Edward Choi Gou Hang, both 34, were caught at Adelaide Airport in December when a sniffer dog detected some of the cash in one of their bags. They pleaded guilty to dealing with the proceeds of crime and were sentenced in the District Court on Tuesday, with Pereira ordered to serve at least nine months in jail and Choi six months. IMPORTED GOODS UNDER $1000 TO FACE GST

A

ustralians will have to pay GST on items bought from overseas that cost $1000 or less under draft laws. Treasurer Scott Morrison on Thursday introduced a bill to parliament that extends the tax to lowvalue imported goods from July 1, as it

applies to those sourced domestically. “These changes are about ensuring Australian businesses, particularly small retailers, do not continue to be unfairly disadvantaged by the current GST exemption that applies to imports of low-value goods,” he told parliament.

AUSSIE FILMS LOOK BEYOND OSCAR GOLD

After each movie wrapped production, filmmakers began to realise their work might help people. Lion producer Iain Canning said that in early screenings, people asked how they could help Calcutta’s homeless children, who are depicted in the film. A team did research and “identified three charities that had a good plan to help kids in this situation”, he told Variety. “So we started this process. It was just something we needed to do.” Canning and Emile Sherman of See-Saw Films worked with US distributor Weinstein Co. and a network of the film’s global distributors to launch the #LionHeart social impact campaign. Nicole Kidman who portrays the adoptive mother in the film, got the fundraising off to a start with a $US10,000 donation. So far the Lion

project has raised more than a quarter-million dollars to help more than 80,000 children in India. The Lion team has been working with Charity Network, which oversees digital fundraising platforms. Lion ran two auctions via Charitybuzz, an online auction site; Prizeo, which offered fans such sweepstakes as “Meet Dev (Patel) and Nicole for a Champagne toast”; and Chideo, which collects donations from anywhere in the world. Among the beneficiaries are Magic Bus, which educates at-risk children about how to move out of poverty; Railway Children, which fights on behalf of kids suffering abuse and exploitation; and Childline India, which runs a 24-hour crisis hotline for youngsters in emergency situations. The latter group is looking to install support kiosks in places where homeless kids congregate, like the train stations in the

film about the life of Saroo Brierley. Other beneficiaries include UN Foundation, UNICEF, Intl. Center for Missing & Exploited Children, and ISSA. The makers of Hacksaw Ridge started screening the film for military veterans early in 2016; they wanted to make sure everyone was comfortable with the intense battle scenes. As it turns out, the vets’ reaction was overwhelmingly positive, says producer Bill Mechanic, because the realism helped them confront their demons and to show loved ones what their experiences were like. So the film team decided to expand their outreach. The film is about conscientious objector Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) and his heroic deeds during WWII; a key element is his father (Hugo Weaving), a veteran of the first World War who experienced PTSD, long before there was a name for it. The Ridge filmmakers

continued their screenings for vets, including at the Disabled American Veterans national convention, the annual Medal of Honor ceremonies (where Doss is “a hero among heroes,” said Mechanic), and the National World War II Museum in New Orleans. The Hacksaw team have linked with multiple organisations, including National Center for PTSD, Veterans in Recovery, and PTSD Foundation of America, with websites and help lines. Mel Gibson said the project was close to his heart. “Veterans are too often sadly overlooked. They sacrificed so much, and some aren’t doing too well. It’s always good to remember these people and I hope this film helps bring attention to them.” Lion producer Canning summed it up by saying quite simply: “Films can entertain, but they can also open doors and be an instrument for change.”

Be wary of suspicious links, Aussies told

A

ustralians are being urged to look out for suspicious messages sent by text or online as criminals find new ways to scam people. Unsolicited links sent by SMS, video links on social media and emails from unknown contacts are becoming a common tools of attack, according to the Minister assisting the Prime Minister for Cyber Security Dan Tehan.

“These messages are designed to look legitimate but if you click on a fraudulent link you can download malware to your computer leaving yourself open to the theft of your personal information,” he said.

He suggested taking a moment to think before responding or clicking links, or talking about it with others who might help identify it as a scam.

Australians reported losing over $81 million to internet fraud in 2016.

DRONES TAKE OFF ON VICTORIAN FARMS

V

ictorian farmer Wayne Lording sits on his verandah, sips a cuppa and sends his drone to check the horses and cows. A qualified helicopter pilot, Mr Lording is also building Australia’s first agriculture-specific drone. “Farmers have got to look at better and more cost-effective ways to manage their properties and drones are the best way to do it” Mr Lording told AAP on Thursday. Mr Lording hopes to equip the $5000 drone with many small cameras and a small tank to spray weeds. The Yea-based farmer often uses drones to check his cattle, saving time going out on horseback, by tractor, or car. “Sometimes I just sit on the back verandah having a cuppa. I’ll send the drone out to look at the water troughs and see if the horses are okay. That saves me a lot of time” he told AAP.

He is still looking at ways to extend the drone’s 30-minute flight time. “Flight times are the biggest problem for agriculturalists” he said. Mr Lording will be at the Avalon Airshow with his homemade drone and will speak about how technology can improve farming practices. Avalon Airshow spokesman Tom Bennett said drones were already being used on farms, but were set to be much more widely used as the technology developed. “Drones are the fastest growing in the sector of Australian aviation,” Mr Bennett told AAP. The conference will showcase a range of drones and their use in search and rescue, emergency services, industry and for amateur enthusiasts. The Avalon Airshow will be held at the Avalon Airport from March 3 to 5 near Geelong.

ustralia’s sleep problems have got worse, with more than a third of adults suffering from the symptoms of sleep deprivation on a daily basis. The Sleep Foundation and The University of Adelaide have conducted research finding 33 to 45 per cent of adults sleep either poorly or not long enough most nights, leaving them fatigued, irritable and in danger.

Sleep Foundation director Dr David Hillman says Australia is in the midst of a sleepiness epidemic and internet addiction is to blame, with 44 per cent of adults web-surfing just before bed almost every night.

VAPING A GATEWAY TO TEEN SMOKING: STUDY

Vaping is a “one-way bridge” to cigarette smoking among teenagers a new study suggests, days after a separate study suggested vaping is safer than cigarettes. The study, published in the journal Tobacco Control, examined data from American pupils in their final year of high school in 2014 and again a year later. It is a theme that runs deep in the sequel to Danny Boyle’s 1996 cult classic, which reunites Sick Boy, Renton (Ewan McGregor), Begbie (Robert Carlyle) and Spud (Ewen Bremner) two decades after the original. Renton has spent the ensuing years in Amsterdam but returns to an Edinburgh he can barely recognise and a past he can’t escape. “I think the idea of this new Edinburgh was useful in our story because it’s moved on, and maybe these characters haven’t maybe moved on with it,” McGregor says. “I think that was Danny’s use of it - he wanted to show this new, shiny city.” While T2: Trainspotting may not be as explicitly political as the original film, Boyle does admit to a nervous moment

It was great and important for the fans.” Great for the fans but Carlyle, in talks to return to the role of Begbie in an adaptation of Welsh’s

The follow up to Fifty Shades Of Grey sees Jamie Dornan and Johnson return as billionaire Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, the woman he introduces to his

The films, and the bestselling books by EL James they are based on, were accused of normalising abuse as campaigners protested outside the UK premiere of the film to say the series perpetuates damaging stereotypes. However, Johnson said she saw her character as the opposite of a victim. Arriving at the Odeon in

Leicester Square, she said: “I think if those people were to see the film they would see that Anastasia is an incredibly empowered young woman and everything she does is of her own volition. “I think she carries herself with such integrity and self worth that maybe if they watched it they would feel a little bit inspired.”

ARIES What’s special this week is your ability to to work under pressure. Don’t rush anything during this moment because you don’t want to be doing damage control at the end. Take note that different points of view and opinions will play an important part in your personal and professional life.

If I don't see you in the future, I'll see you in the pasture.

TAURUS Peace and stability are in the spotlights in your love life at the moment. That’s good because an extra special attention needs to be focused on your career this week. Since you’re a sign who doesn’t really changes that much, the new moon in Mars will give a boost on the adventure department. GEMINI The keywords of this week are news, communication, change and growth. If something happens that you disagree with you, will speak honestly but tactfully. While some points of view may be fiery and unformed early this week, you’ll have a chance to refine them into something more salient this week.

CANCER You need to consider certain matters and decide what is important this week, Cancer. Your communication sector is a little challenged right now, so choose your own words carefully. If you hear news or receive a message that disrupts your concept of what’s ideal, get ready for a lightning-bolt of truth.

If you use logic you can solve the puzzle without guesswork.

Begin at the green arrow and find your way out!

LEO You can look forward to a lot of good prospects this week, especially when you start something new. Dream big, Leo. Sit down with a notebook or create a vision board, tuning in to what you want to accomplish and the areas in which you’d like to grow in.

Need a little help? The hints page shows a logical order to solve the puzzle. Need a little help? The hints page shows a logical order to solve the puzzle. Or use the answers page if you really get stuck. if you really get stuck.

VIRGO Fortunately, most of your prediction for this week only brings pleasant things. Don’t try to have and keep everything under control though. Leave some allowance for the unexpected. The cosmos brings opportunities for a fresh start. LIBRA Saturn, the Taskmaster of the zodiac boosts your discipline and responsibility this week. Working and doing chores in and around your house won’t give you any problems. By the end of the week you feel like doing things that bring along some pleasant excitement and routine things might bore you. SCORPIO Ego and perfectionism could bring forth some drama this week. You won’t be able to please everyone all the time and that’s all right. Don’t waste your energy on attempting it all the time. Set healthy boundaries or gracefully exit from a toxic relationship. You deserve so much better, Scorpio! SAGITTARIUS Be proud of yourself, Sagi because you can come up with a solution for a difficult situation that involves money, health and love. Be ready for some action though. The Communication planet Mercury turns retrograde from February 22 to 24, causing misunderstandings. CAPRICORN There are some nice prospects especially when it comes to love and career. Your dreams could be vivid and prophetic, helping you resolve things while you sleep. If you’re wallowing in indecision, you may feel empowered by making a clear choice, and actually doing something instead of agonizing in your head. AQUARIUS Dreaming and being vulnerable are the things that will become important in your love life this week. In love, if you’re the kind of Water Bearer who’s afraid of commitment, the vulnerability behind it that you’re trying to desperately avoid may actually end up being the key to a successful relationship. PISCES A happy person will cross your path in your social life this week, Pisces. This could be a time of rapid and sudden change, which could be positive in some ways. Get ready for big changes to the way you think, express yourself and connect with others both physically and spiritually. 34 Trouble (colloq.) (3,5)

Australia’s youngest lion cubs on show

T

hey’ll soon be king of the beasts but for now Australia’s youngest lion cubs are just cute balls of mischief for lioness Nairibi. Four 10-week-old African lion cubs tripped, slipped, rolled and fought as they explored their exhibit at Melbourne’s Werribee Open Range Zoo ahead their public debut. The inquisitive cubs, born December 13 last year, have impressed keepers with their progress. Nairibi and the keepers have been closely monitoring the two females and two males in their new surroundings over the past few days. “They are very curious, climbing up over the rocks and logs, wrestling with one another and pouncing on mum’s tail,” keeper Katherine Quinn said in a statement. “Nairibi already has her paws full, in

trying to keep everyone together and make sure that they don’t stray too far!” Like most babies, these tire quickly so zoo staff are asking visitors to be patient if the cubs need to retreat to their dens for food and sleep. Long-term members of Zoos Victoria will have the honour of naming the cubs. It’s been a tumultuous past six months for Australia’s lion pride. Werribee’s quadruplets followed another set of four cubs born at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in November. Melbourne Zoo’s three ageing lions, all born at the zoo in 2000, died from diseases while Werribee’s Tombo, 20, was euthanised after his health rapidly declined. At Perth Zoo, Mandela, 14, died during dental surgery in November - seven months after his brother, Nelson, died of pneumonia.

ATTENBOROUGH, 90, TO HOST BLUE PLANET II

B

ritain’s most revered TV naturalist David Attenborough, 90, is returning to present a sequel to The Blue Planet documentary series, 16 years after the original illuminated the depths of the world’s oceans. Blue Planet II will air later this year on the BBC, and follows the 2001 series which vividly depicted marine life from across the world and won two Emmys and two BAFTAs for its music and cinematography. The BBC said the new series will feature phenomena such as methane volcanoes in the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean’s so-called ‘boiling sea’, as well as footage from 1000

metres under the Antarctic Ocean. “I am truly thrilled to be joining this new exploration of the underwater worlds which cover most of our planet, yet are still its least known,” Attenborough said. The series follows his critically acclaimed series Planet Earth II, which was broadcast in Britain last year. It was the most watched natural history program for at least 15 years, the BBC said, and premiered in the US on Saturday. Attenborough is also known for his work on the Life series of nine documentaries made over a 30-year period from 1979.

JAMES EARL JONES CAST IN LION KING REMAKE

J

ames Earl Jones and Donald Glover are lending their voices to Disney’s upcoming remake of The Lion King. Director Jon Favreau announced the casting of the two men as voice actors. Glover, star and creator of television’s Atlanta, will portray the adult Simba. Jones reprises the role of Simba’s father, Mufasa, which he voiced in the 1994 animated film. Favreau is making a CGI created liveaction version of the movie, similar to Disney’s remake of The Jungle Book, which he also directed. No release date has been publicly set for the new movie. A similar process is being used for Beauty and the Beast, which debuts next month. Favreau has directed Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and is again producing the next two Avengers films.

MAN CITY’S KOMPANY TO MISS MONACO CLASH

M

anchester City captain Vincent Kompany will miss their Champions League last-16, first-leg clash at home to Monaco due to injury, said manager Pep Guardiola. The Belgium centre-back was ruled out of the FA Cup fifth round 0-0 draw at second-tier Huddersfield Town on Saturday after picking up another leg problem in training and will miss the Monaco clash on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT). Guardiola told a news conference on Monday that Kompany would be available for the FA Cup replay at the Etihad Stadium on February 28 but would not be fit to face the Ligue 1 leaders. But France defender Gael Clichy could return after a back problem. “We will see after the session tomorrow. He is much, much better. Maybe he will be back tomorrow,” Guardiola said. The Spaniard added that he would only choose his goalkeeper - Claudio Bravo or Willy Caballero - on the day of the match. Guardiola also stressed how impressed he was with Leonardo Jardim’s side, who have scored more goals than any other team in Europe’s top five leagues this season with 76 in Ligue 1. “Monaco are physical and strong, the full backs play like wingers, the wingers play like attacking midfielders. They are killers in the box,” he said. “Both holding midfielders are intelligent, physical, strong, and they arrive in the box as a complete team. They are the best team in Europe in terms of scoring goals. So it’s a tough draw.”

END SUTTON’S DREAM FA CUP RUN

A

rsenal forward Theo Walcott has scored his 100th goal for the club in a 2-0 win at Sutton United in the FA Cup as the Gunners safely negotiated the minefield of a visit to the minor league team and secured a place in the quarter-finals. The England striker reached his century after the break, adding to a first-half strike from Lucas Perez, as the Premier League giants were relieved to put their recent woes behind them and end the National League club’s fairytale run. Arsene Wenger’s men, determined not to entertain

the concept of a Cup giant-killing, forgot their European troubles and coped with an artificial pitch in a ramshackle south London ground to beat, but not overwhelm, the courageous fifth-tier dreamers. Sutton had fantasised about pulling off the greatest Cup upset of all in front of 5000 fans and hosting a sixth-round tie with fellow National League club Lincoln City, who are the first minor league side to reach the last eight in 103 years. Yet Sutton’s chances of emulating Lincoln’s sensational win at Premier League Burnley on

Saturday were effectively extinguished once Arsenal’s Spanish striker Lucas broke the deadlock in the 26th minute with a left-foot curler. Walcott killed the tie with a slickly-worked team goal in the 55th minute but Sutton refused to bow out quietly, creating several good chances and seeing their best player, Roarie Deacon, smash a fierce shot against the bar. It was not enough, though, to stop a slightly understrength Arsenal side from easing towards a home date with Lincoln as they seek to win the FA Cup for a record 13th time.

s much as Kevin Muscat would love to take James Troisi’s sweet left boot to Brisbane next month, the Melbourne Victory coach would be just as delighted if he’s away with the Socceroos. And he’d hardly be surprised, warning Troisi will only keep getting better. If there was ever a case for Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou to recall his Asian Cup hero - and there have been a few strong ones lately - it was his A-League showing against Central Coast on Sunday. He was the inspiration behind Victory’s 3-0 win in Gosford, his searing solo strike merely one element of the playmaker’s display that also had a hand in Besart Berisha’s brace and so much more.

really happy for him. “Over the conversations I’ve had with him 18 months prior to coming back (to Victory), that was one of the things we spoke about. “You need to be in an environment where you can train and play with a smile on your face, in familiar surroundings in Melbourne. “He’s doing that and his performances are good, but I think they’ll improve.” The result lifted secondplaced Victory to within eight points of leaders Sydney FC and sets the stage for a mammoth Premiers’ Plate race in the final seven regularseason rounds. Muscat, as always, underplayed talk of the table, though the significance of upcoming weeks cannot be lost on him. Sydney, who suffered their first defeat of the season, to Western Sydney on Saturday,

I REALLY DO BELIEVE WE HAVEN’T SEEN THE BEST OF HIM THIS SEASON It’s no secret Troisi has been plugging away in the hope Postecoglou might deem him worthy of adding to his 28 caps. The 28-year-old’s recent purple patch has approached career-best levels and already made him a frontrunner to replace the injured Tom Rogic in March’s qualifiers against Iraq in Tehran and the UAE in Sydney. “He’s been superb, and I really do believe we haven’t seen the best of him this season,” Muscat said. “If James is unavailable when we go to Brisbane (two days after the Iraq game) I’ll be

must next face Melbourne City away. Should the Sky Blues lose and Victory simultaneously beat struggling Adelaide, and then reign in the last Big Blue of the season, Victory will sit just two points adrift of the summit with five games to play. “While it’s mathematically possible we will keep going, aiming to take maximum points from the remaining games,” Muscat said. “If that’s enough to overtake Sydney, great. “But there’s no point worrying about what they’re doing because I can’t affect that side of things.”

RICCIARDO’S F1 TEAM EXCITED BY NEW ENGINE whole team to try and outwit, out-smart, out-develop and outproduce our rivals. That’s going to be a stellar challenge in F1 this year.” Red Bull will show off their new car on Sunday with testing starting in Barcelona next Monday. Horner said former champions Red Bull were on schedule, proceeding like a swan while paddling frantically beneath the surface. Renault launched their car in London on Tuesday.

D

aniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull team are hoping revamped Renault engines will give them the power to take on champions Mercedes in a new-look Formula One this season. Red Bull’s Renault engines, branded as Tag-Heuer, powered the team to two wins last season with Dutch teenager Max Verstappen and Australian Ricciardo. They were the only drivers apart from Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and now-retired world champion Nico Rosberg to win races in 2016. “It’s a brand new engine this year, a change of

philosophy,” team principal Christian Horner said in a pre-season interview conducted by the team. “They (Renault) have had a big winter. “We’re hoping for a step up in performance and if that’s delivered then hopefully we can really be a challenger team this year and give the Mercedes and Ferraris a hard time.” The rules have been rewritten this year, with cars expected to lap significantly faster on wider tyres. As with any change to the status quo, Horner saw a development battle stretching out from the start

of the season in Australia on March 26 all the way to Abu Dhabi on November 26. “What excites us most about 2017 is the opportunities that arise from these new regulations. It’s going to be fascinating to see who’s got it right and who’s got it wrong,” said the Briton, whose team were runners-up last year. “You’ll see big increments early on because the regulations are pretty immature. I think there is going to be low-hanging fruit early on to make sizeable steps. “That’s going to push every department in the

Watts fighting for Demons spot: Gawn << cont. from back page...

“So just simply trying a few things around. “Round one, he’ll still be a viable option for us.” A fit Watts’ non-selection for the Demons’ pre-season opener against Western Bulldogs has prompted speculation he may be overlooked by new coach Goodwin.

But Gawn backed Watts to continue his strong 2016 form this season and expected him to play in at least one of the remaining two pre-season matches. “He’s fit. He’s been training all pre-season,” Gawn said. “But for some reason or another he wasn’t picked in the 24 (against the Bulldogs). I’m sure that wasn’t based

on because he wasn’t good enough to be in the 22. “I think that’s more based on some of the training things we’ve seen from other guys around him, like Sam Weideman and Aaron Vandenberg, who deserved a go. “The Jack Watts we saw last year will be the Jack Watts we see this year.”

NEW EAGLE MITCHELL SET TO FACE DOCKERS

S

tar West Coast recruit Sam Mitchell is set to play his first game for the club in Saturday’s AFL pre-season clash with Fremantle as the race for midfield spots heats up. The Eagles fielded a second-string squad in last week’s 33-point pre-season loss to GWS, but the club’s big stars are set to return for the practice derby in Geraldton. Mitchell, who was snared from Hawthorn at the end of last season, is expected to headline the inclusions, while former North Melbourne forward Drew Petrie and Brownlow medallist Matt Priddis are also in line to play.

WATTS FIGHTING

FOR DEMONS SPOT: GAWN

S

tar forward Jack Watts’ pre-season form won’t have guaranteed him a spot in Melbourne’s round-one AFL side, with teammate Max Gawn conceding he is fighting for his spot. But ruckman Gawn has rejected suggestions of a

lack of pre-season fitness or attitudinal issues with the 25-year-old, who’s coming off a career-best season. With a number of youngsters putting their hands up with strong pre-season efforts, Gawn said Watts is facing tough

competition for his spot despite kicking 38 goals not missing a game in 2016. Rather than a certainty, Gawn described Watts as an “option” for selection when their season proper begins against St Kilda on March 25. “There’s been some guys

who’ve had some good preseasons around him,” Gawn told SEN radio on Tuesday. “Aaron Vandenberg, Sam Weideman, I think Goodie (coach Simon Goodwin) wanted to try out the two ruckmen this week.
