Pell a significant presence for victims C

ardinal George Pell was a strong presence in Phil Nagle's life as a Catholic schoolboy in Ballarat.

Mr Nagle grew up in a strong Catholic family and was eight when he transferred to the Christian Brothers-run St Alipius Boys' School in Ballarat East in 1973. But as Mr Nagle told a Victorian inquiry in 2013: "Ballarat's St Alipius Primary School in Victoria Street was certainly not the place to be if you were a Catholic boy going to school in the 1970s." Its 1973 staff included three pedophile Christian Brothers, with another also teaching there in the early 1970s. The school chaplain was pedophile Gerald Francis Ridsdale, the Ballarat East assistant priest. Cardinal Pell was the Ballarat East priest form 1973 until 1984 and, as episcopal vicar for education, oversaw Catholic schools in the Ballarat diocese during

that time.

"For me George was a very strong presence around my school when I was there in the early 70s," Mr Nagle told AAP. "He was always around at the pool at our swimming sports, so I've got a lot of memories of him being there. "For him not to be aware of what was going on, I find it hard to believe."

Mr Nagle has travelled to Rome with other survivors to hear Cardinal Pell tell the child abuse royal commission about the church's knowledge and handling of pedophile clergy in the diocese and the Melbourne archdiocese. "He's a Ballarat boy. We're at the stage now that we really want to disown him," Mr Nagle said.

The Rome group say they are on a quest for truth and honesty.

"He was always around the school. We always saw him.

"We're a group of damaged men trying to get a message across: no more premature deaths and our children have to be safe."

"He was a significant part of all of our growing up." Mr Blenkiron will also be in the Rome hotel conference room with Cardinal Pell as he gives his videolink evidence to the commission in Sydney. "There's people in the Ballarat community that I've seen who say `leave Cardinal Pell alone, he's one of the best blokes that I've ever met'," Mr Blenkiron said. "He might be. This is not a personal attack on him by any means.

"If not us, who? If not now, when?" Mr Blenkiron said.

The hype surrounding Cardinal George Pell may be allowing others in the Catholic Church to fly under the radar over the handling of child sex abuse, observers say. Lawyer Dr Judy Courtin said Cardinal Pell's appearance at the child sex abuse royal commission was significant given his seniority but others must also be held accountable. "They don't want to get lost under the radar," said Dr Courtin, who specialises in institutional sexual abuse.

The state government's new infrastructure body, Infrastructure Victoria, has been asked to prepare the report, which would highlight any projects the state needs over the next three decades, by the end of the year. One of the many projects it may look at is the East West Link.

Premier Daniel Andrews said recently he was looking forward to seeing the report but wouldn't comment further. "It will give a 30 year view of everything the state, and city, might need, everything from hospitals to public transport, and roads, those sort of things," Mr Andrews told reporters. The government spent $1.1 billion to rip up the East West Link contract when they came to power in 2014.

Commerical net fishing to go from Melbourne

C

ommercial net fishing will be all but gone from Port Phillip Bay by April as most fishers opt to take the Victorian government's compensation package.

"We believe that the nets were not sustainable for the resources out there"

Out of the 43 commercial fishers operating in the bay, 33 will exit by April 1, two will stay on for a while longer and eight will transition to line fishing. Net fishing in the bay will be completely banned from Corio Bay from mid-2018 and across the bay by 2022 after a bill passed Victorian parliament in November. Victorian Agriculture Minister Jaala Pulford, who made the announcement at the Albert Park Angling Club on Saturday, said the number opting out have "absolutely exceeded our [government's] expectations". She said the 33 commercial fishers represented 73 per cent of the total catch, leaving recreational fishers with very little. The outgoing licence-holders will receive $24.5 million out of the total compensation package of $27 million in the next few weeks. But Seafood Industry Victoria executive director Jonathan Davies is scathing of the plan he says has made it hard for businesses to continue working for more than a year.

"It's hard for someone to stay in a job and take a 10 per cent hit if they're going to stay for seven years," he said. He said the compensation package was structured to promote an early exit, with each year a company opted to stay until 2022 penalised by a 10 per cent reduction in the overall compensation packet. About $310,000 has been promised as compensation for each commercial licence, with an additional $75,000 provided for equipment.

Melbourne port lease almost ready to go

V

ictoria is preparing to sell the $6 billion lease of Melbourne's port, with four consortiums lining up to buy it.

"I know that there are at least four consortiums, I am not advised who they are," Mr Pallas told reporters on Friday.

Treasurer Tim Pallas says the 50-year lease will be sold in the early part of 2017 after a deal on legislation was agreed on Thursday.

"For probity purposes the intention is to keep me separated from who may be bidders in these arrangements." Long-running negotiations

on legislation to sell the port came to an end on Thursday night when the opposition and government agreed on the major points of a compensation scheme for the owners. The new owners will be paid compensation if another statesponsored port is built within 15

years of the port lease being signed - as long as Melbourne hasn't reached its agreed capacity. The opposition, Greens and cross-benchers are considering the latest amendments, with the port lease legislation set to pass through Parliament on March 8.

Pill tests 'support' illegal drugs says Baird N

SW Premier Mike Baird has equated pill testing with supporting the illegal drug trade and dismissed a planned trial at music festivals as "ridiculous". "We are not going to be condoning in any way what illegal drug dealers are doing," he told reporters in Sydney on Sunday. "There is a very safe way to go about pills and that is, don't take them." He said testing would give drug-takers a false sense of safety. His comments follow a vow by Sydney doctor Alex Wodak, president of the Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation, to roll out a pill testing trial even if it means breaking the law.

Dr Wodak has announced he will begin fundraising $100,000 for a trial that he said would save young people's lives and reduce dangerous substances found in illicit drugs taken at festivals. sign up festival organisers because it would A stand will be set up at festival events with make their events safer and he would move the trial outside of NSW if needed. a machine that tests the content of pills and powders, reporting back to the user "It's keeping people alive," he said. on whether it contained life-threatening Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley said elements. she wasn't convinced by the proposal. Victoria's Mental Health Minister Martin Foley said the government did not have plans for pill testing. ore than half of the estimated 268,000 regular users of ice are dependent on the drug, says the first research quantifying the problem in Australia. The estimates suggest the numbers have substantially risen during the past five years, while recent increases were most marked among those aged 15-34. Overall the highest rates of methamphetamine use have consistently been among 25 to 35-year-olds. "There is a need for both more health services and better engagement with and retention of clients in treatment services," say the authors of the research published online by the Medical Journal of Australia.

Using sources including drug treatment and hospitalisation data, they estimated the number of regular and dependent ice users for each year from 2002

to 2014 and the numbers by age group. Regular users had the drug at least once a month in the last year, while those with "impaired control" of their use and who continued despite health and other adverse consequences were deemed to be dependent. They estimated that in 201314 there were 268,000 regular users, aged between 15 and 54, with 160,000 of them being dependent. "This equates to population rates of 2.09 per cent for regular and 1.24 per cent for dependent use," said lead researcher Professor Louisa Degenhardt from the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre. The rate of dependent use had continued to increase since 2009-10, when the rate was estimated to be .74 per cent, and was higher than the previous peak of 1.22 per cent in 2006-07.

NBN Co. rejects reports of a slow rollout T

he company rolling out the national broadband network has rejected reports it is falling well short of its construction schedule.

As at February 18, nearly 1.8 million homes could now order a service and more than 800,000 homes were already connected and using the network.

The NBN has met or exceeded every key target for six quarters in a row, it insists.

By the end of June the company was on track for nearly one in four homes to be able to order a service and by June 2018 that would grow to three in four.

Fairfax Media, quoting an internal progress report, claimed the $46 billion network was facing mounting delays and rising costs.

Not so, says NBN Co. It said the giant infrastructure project had fallen twothirds short of its benchmark construction timetable.

"Mr Turnbull had left the NBN in a shocking mess"

The company was on track to meet or exceed its full-year targets of 2.6 million homes ready for service, with about one million homes using the network, and more than $300 million in revenue. The company's management had proven repeatedly that it could effectively monitor risks and manage those risks.

Labor communications spokesman Jason Clare said Mr Turnbull had left the NBN in a shocking mess. Tread carefully with Negative gearing, Howard warns M

alcolm Turnbull says he won't be rushed into making decisions on tax reform just because Labor has recklessly proposed making changes to how property investors are taxed.

One reporter said it sounded like the prime minister was ruling out making a change to negative gearing, to which Mr Turnbull replied: "It sounds like I'm doing my job as prime minister, looking at these issues very The federal opposition has proposed limiting very carefully, that's what Australians expect me to do." negative gearing to new properties should it win the election, a plan that has drawn Labor frontbencher Anthony Albanese support from voters. dismissed the claim it would diminish the It has raised suggestions that the prime minister is considering changes, such as capping the amount people can offset on their taxes through negative gearing. But former prime minister John Howard has warned Mr Turnbull to tread carefully before making any change. Mr Howard, who will celebrate the 20th anniversary of defeating Paul Keating as prime minister this week, says many people with modest incomes rely on the tax concession. "Negative gearing has been around forever ... I'd be careful," Mr Howard told Sky news on Sunday. Mr Turnbull agreed, saying Labor wants to inflict a tax change that would cause a huge shock at a time when "confidence is everything". He said it would hurt the value of Australian families' single biggest asset when the global economy is turbulent and Australia is going through a transition. "To administer such a big shock ... is very reckless," Mr Turnbull told reporters in Canberra after presiding over the coin toss for the annual Pollies versus Press Gallery cricket match. He said that is why the government is taking time to look at these issues.

value of family homes.

"What you're doing is making sure first home buyers ... will enter the market and not be competing in an unfair way," he told ABC TV. The government has promised to make tax cuts to counter bracket creep, which will force many middle income earners into the second highest tax bracket before long just through wage inflation.

But an increase in the GST rate to 15 per cent from 10 per cent to pay for those cuts has already been ruled out because the government says modelling shows it provides little in the way of economic growth.

But Mr Howard, who introduced the GST in 2000, believes it will be necessary to raise or broaden the GST sometime in the future to allow for reductions in personal income tax and company tax, while providing greater efficiencies that don't rely heavily on direct taxes. He said New Zealand has demonstrated that with a much lower rate of personal tax and a higher GST of 15 per cent, that has always covered everything. "It's the purest GST ... in the world," he said, adding he regretted having to remove fresh food from the impost.

Filmmaker on mission to "save humanity" I

t's a tall order to save humanity, but that's the mission of central Victorian filmmaker Lisa Heenan in her film Polyfaces. The documentary follows US farmer Joel Salatin whose northern Virginian farm, Polyface, is run chemical-free, feeding more than 6,000 families, restaurants and cafes within a three-hour radius. The award-winning film, being shown at film festivals worldwide, premieres in Australia this weekend. The aim is to show agriculture need not damage the planet, says Heenan, who produced the film with her farm designer husband Darren Doherty and daughter Isaebella Doherty. "It's almost like we're monks. We're on this mission to be a part of saving humanity," she told AAP. "There's a lot of people that are very wealthy and very greedy. They're doing their best to destroy the planet, using chemicals and making products that are not in any way helping humans or the planet. "So I say every day you can make the choice as a consumer that you can support somebody who's helping to destroy the planet or someone who's helping to regenerate the planet." It's been no small sacrifice for the

"I'm up to nearly my fifth year working on this and we haven't got any financial return from it," the mother-of-three said.

"I just think it's outrageous."

"It gets quite exhausting when you're in fundraising mode for so many years, so I don't want to ask anyone else for any more money. And we've used all of ours." But Heenan says it has been worth it, with the film a powerful call for governments to enact regulations enabling smaller, ethical farmers to survive and consumers to be more conscious of their choices. "I say if you eat, this movie's for you," she said. "Are we supporting a local farmer who is regenerating their soil or are we supporting farmers in another country that are using fossil fuels to bring whatever their product is to Australia?

Back then, a home brewer may have been able to create some great recipes but didn't have the business acumen so along the way hired staff to cover marketing, sales, the business operation, he said. It's harder to pull that off today.

Industry officials agree there's a need for education and knowledge in the industry and different ways to get it, whether through experience, hiring talent or training, which some breweries provide. As outside investors and larger breweries become increasingly involved with craft brewing, Harpoon Brewery, which will be offering apprenticeships to the UVM students, feels a need to maintain its independence. "Hiring talented people is a critical part of that effort," Rich Ackerman, Harpoon's director of human resources, said. But the company cautions anyone against thinking of craft brewing purely as a business. "It's a passion project, first and foremost," he said.

As the industry has grown and become more competitive, the bar has been raised for those starting a brewery or working for one, said Bart Watson, chief economist with the Brewers Association. "Certainly the demand for people with a high level of brewing knowledge has gone up and on the business side as well. So I think we're seeing a variety of different programs look for ways that they can capitalise on that," he said. Portland State University in Oregon started an online business of craft brewing program in 2013, with the first cohort filling up in the first week with around 40 people. It's become one of the school's most successful professional certificate programs, drawing people from around the world, said Scott Gallagher, the university's director of communications. "We discovered that there's a huge need for people who wanted to get a certificate. They didn't necessarily want to go to college or already had a college degree and wanted to open up a brew pub," Mr Gallagher said. They needed some basic and more advanced knowledge, such as in marketing, he said. The demand is so high that PSU is looking at how to develop and expand the program, Mr Gallagher said. "The truth is ... it's not all about brewing and drinking beer. There's a lot of business behind it as well and that's usually what they're lacking," he said. University of Portland and San Diego

Saxbys in the fight for Chloe's life E

Seven-year-old Chloe has already lost the ability to walk because of a rare degenerative brain disease that will next claim her ability to see, hear, speak and eat before a painful, early death unless a cure is found.

They must watch Chloe constantly to make sure she doesn't hurt herself, get even a minor cold or become too stressed.

"But if something happens that we don't, at least we've contributed to saving the lives of other children."

"Every second of our lives, it's like being on a knife's edge. We walk on glass every day," Mrs Saxby said.

Chloe is one of just seven children in Australia and 170 worldwide with Vanishing White Matter Disease. Her parents are on a mission to raise $2.6 million for a cure before it's too late. Chloe was diagnosed at three and a half after coming down with a vomiting virus. A week later she couldn't walk. "We thought it was an inner ear infection," Mrs Saxby told AAP. But a trip to the pediatrician and an MRI indicated it was something much worse. Her brain scans were sent to a professor in the Netherlands and VWM was confirmed eight months later.

"It's extremely painful and not a nice outcome for Chloe. "She'll be very young. Chloe has one of the severe mutations and with her diagnosis at three and a half her outlook, if we don't find a cure, is not good." But she is confident a cure is close and with funding it could be ready in time to save Chloe's life. Israeli professor Orna ElroyStein has been working on a cure with promising results. Rare minerals make the Earth unique T

he 2550 rare minerals that exist on Earth constitute a unique fingerprint that differentiates this planet from all others in the cosmos.

scientist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington's Geophysical Laboratory, told EFE. Hazen, who is also executive director of the Deep Carbon Observatory, which studies carbon on Earth, added that this is the reason why explorations carried out up to now on the moon and even on Mars by means of rovers "are not discovering anything very surprising in mineralogy".

The conclusion comes from scientists who, for the first time, have catalogued minerals in all their varieties. Research scientists Robert Hazen and Jesse Ausubel on Friday published in American Mineralogist magazine the study On the Nature and Significance of Rarity in Mineralogy.

Ausubel, director of the Program for the Human Environment and senior research associate at The Rockefeller University in New York City, said the mineralogical riches on Earth are linked to its richness of life and that a world ecologically poorer translates into the presence of fewer minerals.

This catalogues the 2550 most singular minerals on the planet - minerals like fingerita, discovered in El Salvador, and amosite. The scientists say that these rarities differentiate Earth from all other planets. "Our conclusion is that every planet able to support life has a unique fingerprint of minerals, especially of rare minerals. It's also very probable that planets without life, like Mercury and even Mars, have much simpler minerals," Dr Hazen, a research

"It's an incredibly fascinating concept that has come to light over the past decade, the idea that minerals and life are absolutely linked. Life depends on minerals. Life could not have begun without some of the chemical properties that minerals provided at Earth's beginning," Hazen said.

Uber eyes motorcycle service in Bangkok S

martphone ride-hailing service Uber is placing a bet on motorcycles in the Thai capital, adding motorbike rides to its arsenal of on-demand services. Uber announced Wednesday the launching of its UberMOTO service in Bangkok as a pilot project for services specifically developed for cities in emerging markets. The new service is not original in concept or execution. Motorcycle taxis are a long-standing tradition in many Southeast Asian cities, becoming especially popular after the economic boom of the 1980s brought an onslaught of new cars jamming city streets. Uber's Singapore-based competitor GrabTaxi launched its GrabBike motorcycle ride ondemand service in Bangkok in July last year, and even earlier in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam.

Fans pirate 500,000 copies of Kanye album K

anye West may find it hard to pay back that $US53 million ($A74.65 million) debt as his fans are using pirate sites to download his album for free. West released his latest album The Life Of Pablo exclusively on Jay-Z's streaming service Tidal which is largely believed to have driven many to download the album for free. TorrentFreak, a website which reports on piracy issues, says over half a million people have downloaded a pirated copy of the album since its release on Sunday.

Meanwhile, some fans who bought the album via digital download for $US20 ($A28.17) or were supposed to have received a copy when they bought tickets to his show at Madison Square Gardens, are also reportedly still waiting on the album which was supposed to drop on February 12.

Since then, West has tweeted that the album would only ever be available for streaming on Tidal.

"My album will never never never be on Apple. And it will never be for sale ... You can only get it on Tidal," West tweeted on Tuesday. However, pirated copies of the album have been available on torrent and pirate download sites since the first version dropped on Sunday.

Sit-stand desk workers 'more energised'

W

orkers using sit-stand desks feel more energised and are just as productive as those using traditional ones, according to a small Australian study. As experts warn of the adverse health outcomes associated with increasingly sedentary lifestyles, offices have become a target for strategies to reduce sitting time.

The study, published in Preventive Medicine Reports, measured productivity effects on 30 Optus call-centre workers over five months in 2013. Half the participants used a sit-stand desk, while the others continued working at their usual desk. "Our study found that workers who increased their standing by up to 60-90 minutes a day were more active and felt more energised than workers who used traditional desks, while not compromising their work output," said lead researcher Dr Josephine Chau, from the University of Sydney.

No significant differences were found in the two groups for talk time on call, hold time on call, wrap-up time on call, average call handling time, attendance days, sick days or customer ratings. But the sit-stand group gave stronger "indication of feeling more sustained energy levels throughout the work day". "A growing body of research suggests that prolonged periods of sitting is linked to a higher risk of developing chronic diseases, including obesity, heart disease and type 2 diabetes," Dr Chau said. But she stressed that people shouldn't assume that using a standing desk meant they don't have to exercise. "We need to sit less and move more," she said.

Bill Gates - Young can solve energy problem B

ill and Melinda Gates want young people to get involved in solving major world problems, like finding clean energy sources and changing the division of household and childcare labour between men and women. The couple, co-chairs of the largest private foundation in the world, has made a tradition of releasing an annual letter on philanthropy. This year's edition, released on Monday, called on the young to be a driving force for innovation and change.

energy. He called on young people to study hard and come forward with their ideas to come up with what he called "an energy miracle".

In her section of the letter, Melinda Gates decried the ongoing disparity in unpaid household labour between men and women. On much of the globe, she wrote, responsibilities for maintaining a home, raising children and caring for the elderly still fall primarily on women and girls, sometimes keeping them from education and paid work.

"I've seen miracles happen before. The personal computer. The internet. The polio vaccine. None of them happened by chance. They are the result of research and development and the human capacity to innovate."

"When I say 'miracle', I don't mean something's that impossible," he wrote.

'Every year could bring a heat wave' W

ithout reductions in planet-warming emissions, blistering heat waves of the strength that now typically occur once every 20 years could happen annually on 60 per cent of the Earth's land areas by 2075, scientists are warning. And intense heat waves defined as three exceptionally hot days in a row - will become far more extreme if greenhouse gas emissions continue unchecked, said a new study published in the journal Climatic Change. The researchers said a worsening of extreme heat could have potentially deadly effects. "Imagine the hottest day that you can remember and instead of 42C, it's now 45C. That's going to have a dangerous impact on the poor, the old and the very young, who are typically the ones dying in heat waves,"

said Michael Wehner of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the United States. By 2050, heat waves that happen on average once in 20 years would be at least 3C hotter on 60 per cent of the Earth's land areas than now. In 10 per cent of the world, they would be at least 5C hotter, the researchers said. In December, around 195 countries agreed a new UN deal to try to restrain the rise in global average temperatures to "well below" 2C above pre-industrial levels. But the emissions cuts they have pledged so far are not enough to meet that goal. The new research - part of a larger project to quantify how emission reductions could affect health, agriculture, hurricanes, sea level rise and drought - found that stringent mitigation measures could reduce heat waves

significantly. "The study shows that aggressive cuts in greenhouse gas emissions will translate into sizable benefits, starting in the middle of the century, for both the number and intensity of extreme heat events," said Claudia Tebaldi of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, where the project is based. "Even though heat waves are on the rise, we still have time to avoid a large portion of the impacts," she added.

Govts should rethink on tech investment G

overnments must radically rethink their technology investments, which are feeding wasteful consumption, driving inequality and worsening the global warming that is pushing our planet to crisis point, a charity says.

"We need to see more public funding being used to stimulate R&D (research and development) into problems that are critical but currently lack market drivers," the report said.

Contrary to popular thinking, it is governments, not businesses, that often invest in high-risk, cutting-edge research - only to let the private sector scoop up the profits from the resulting products, Practical Action says.

There is minimal spending on agricultural technologies such as improved seeds and irrigation systems that could cut poverty among African farmers and boost global food supplies, it said.

A relatively small number of people benefit from the vast majority of innovations, which rarely address basic needs like health and access to food, water and energy, Practical Action's senior policy adviser, Amber Meikle, says.

Africa spent $US4 billion ($A5.73 billion) on agricultural research in 2000 compared with $US574 billion spent by the United States, it said.

"Take the iPhone - it is almost entirely dependent on technologies developed through government-funded programs including the internet, GPS, touchscreens and Siri (a voice activated personal assistant)," she said. "The state should recoup more of this investment and re-invest in further innovation for social and environmental good, instead of providing the high-risk investments for huge corporations without fully profiting from it." Innovations to provide people with clean energy for cooking and clean water and toilets would save five million lives a year, the charity said in a report.

Similarly, the lion's share of medical research focuses on health problems affecting

said, pointing to the overuse of antibiotics, which is creating resistant superbugs. Some 80 per cent of antibiotic consumption in the US is by animals, often to promote growth rather than treat diseases, public health advocacy groups say. Fossil fuels, whose use is the main contributor to global warming, receive $US5 trillion in subsidies each year, International Monetary Fund data shows. "It is time to disinvest from these technologies and to invest instead in the accelerated development of sustainable alternatives, and in innovation that delivers on needs that are difficult to commercialise," the report said.

acebook says that "Reactions", an extension of the "Like" button, has now been rolled out worldwide.

The social network launched a pilot of "Reactions" - which allows users to select from seven emotions including "Angry", "Sad" and "Wow" - in Ireland and Spain in October. In a video accompanying a blog post, the five new buttons appear as animated emoticons that pop up when the "Like" button is held down on mobile devices. The buttons appear on desktops when users hover over the "Like" button. The "Yay" emoticon, which was present in the pilot launch, was not seen in Wednesday's video. "We will initially use any Reaction similar to a Like to infer that you want to see more of that type of content," Facebook said in separate blog post. The company said that over time it hoped to learn how different "Reactions" should be weighted differently by the Facebook News Feed to customise it for individual users. Facebook said "Reactions" would have the same impact on ad delivery as "likes".

Kesha breaks silence after court ruling

S

inger Kesha has broken her silence after losing her contract dispute with Sony bosses in court last week, insisting the case was all about making music "without being afraid, scared or abused". The Tik Tok performer filed a sexual abuse lawsuit against her onetime mentor and producer Dr Luke in October, 2014, accusing him of subjecting her to years of sexual, physical, verbal and emotional abuse. She even went as far as to claim his actions led to her 60-day stint in the Timberline Knolls rehab clinic in Illinois two years ago, and asked to be released from her Sony contract, claiming she was unable to continue with her music career, because she had been prohibited from working with any another producer other than Dr Luke. A judge in Manhattan was unmoved by her argument and dismissed the lawsuit as Kesha sobbed in the courtroom. Now the 28-year-old has taken to Facebook to update fans.

"This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract it was never about getting a bigger, or a better deal," she wrote.

"I think about young girls today - I don't want my future daughter - or your daughter - or any person to be afraid that they will be punished if they speak out about being abused, especially if their abuser is in a position of power," she added. "Unfortunately I don't think that my case is giving people who have been abused confidence that they can speak out, and that's a problem," she added. Kesha's case was also a hot topic at the Brit Awards in London on Wednesday night, with the event's first trophy winner, Adele, taking a moment to show her support during her acceptance speech. "I'd also like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha," Aele said as she waved her award in the air.

"This is about being free from my abuser. All I ever wanted was to be able to make music without being afraid, scared, or abused." The star added the issue is now "bigger than just about me," and fans seemed to agree, clocking up more than 8,000 'likes' in the five minutes immediately after the post went online.

Elton John slams Jackson for 'lip-syncing' S

ir Elton John has stunned fans by launching a scathing tirade against Janet Jackson, accusing his fellow superstar of duping fans by lip-syncing on tour. Jackson, 49, launched her music comeback last year with the release of Unbreakable, her first album since 2008's Discipline, and then hit the road for her Unbreakable World Tour.

The live shows, her first in four years, kicked off in Vancouver, Canada in August to great reviews, but Sir Elton can't understand raving reviews because he's convinced Jackson no longer sings live. "You know, f***ing music magazines writing a review of Janet Jackson saying, 'This is the greatest show - four and a half stars,'" the outspoken Brit told Rolling Stone magazine. "It's f***ing lip-synced! Hello! That's not a show!" "I'd rather go and see a drag queen," the 68-year-old declared, before adding, "F*** off." Representatives for Jackson, who recently had to halt her trek to undergo throat surgery, are yet to comment on Sir Elton's harsh critique. The Candle in the Wind singer is well known for his blunt and brutally honest opinions. He famously attacked his former foe Madonna back in 2004, accusing her of miming her way through shows, after she was nominated for the Best Live Act honour at Britain's Q Awards. "Madonna, Best Live Act? F*** off," he told the shocked audience. "Since when has lip-syncing been live? Sorry about that, but I think everyone who lip-syncs on stage in public, when you pay like 75 quid to see them, should be shot. Thank you very much. That's me off her Christmas card list, but do I give a toss? No." The pair has since made amends after years of petty fighting, and now Sir Elton admits the Queen of Pop didn't deserve the vitriol he threw her way. "I say what I feel," he continued to Rolling Stone. "I probably went too far with Madonna, and I got very personal and I wrote her (to apologise) - she was very gracious."

Your Horoscopes ARIES Nothing is as changeable as man and you are the best example. You think people are fickle in your vicinity, but you are also a bit crazy. That’s okay as long as you don’t end up in tricky situations. TAURUS An encounter with an interesting person could put both your feet back on the ground. You had hoped there was more to it but in the end you will see you were saved from a disaster. If you no longer want to keep your money on the bank because the interest rates don’t pay off it would be okay to consider a wise long-term investment. GEMINI Emotional waves could take you up high first to let you crash downwards afterwards. Your partner can hardly keep up with this so ensure there is balance. Have a close look at yourself.

CANCER Safety and security are important to you but you will have to get used to the fact that life is unpredictable. Something unexpected could happen. This could startle you but you could also be pleased about this adventure. LEO A new friendship is lurking around the corner but you have to sneak a peek first. That doesn’t necessarily have to turn into a romantic encounter immediately but then again... Something is heading your way so it is important that you keep an eye out for new opportunities to increase your income. VIRGO Surround yourself with people who are important to you. Ignore whoever is using up your energy. That difference is important and you will discover it by paying attention to whom is taking advantage of you.

LIBRA Your urge to experience an adventure could get out of hand if you don’t control yourself enough. It’s nice to flirt but to go beyond that? Before you realize it you get tangled up in all kinds of situations and obligations.

SCORPIO You need happiness and fun. This need is caused by the fact that you have just gone through a very negative period. Sing, dance, laugh and be amazed. Accept every invitation and make yourself look beautiful. SAGITTARIUS Close the curtains, light some candles, make sure you are warm and comfortable and lie down with your loved one. Surrender to the pleasure of the intimacy and get over an obstacle. Financially you should wait now even though there are temptations around you everywhere. CAPRICORN The turbulence in your life is over for now. Enjoy the peace and quiet in your love life. It’s harder for some of you to be quieter but it’s necessary to maintain the harmony. You dream of a second home in a foreign country after a weekend get-away. AQUARIUS That attractive person whom you’ve recently met seems a nice match but don’t be disappointed when you don’t hear from him/her anymore. It was probably just a fling. Jackman mixes it up in Eddie the Eagle

A

ussie Hugh Jackman has never felt pigeonholed in Hollywood as a result of his Wolverine role. The 47-year-old actor has taken on a wide variety of roles, including playing Wolverine in the X-Men movies and their spin offs.

Despite perhaps being best known for starring as the clawed mutant, Jackman isn't concerned about being typecast. "People ask me all the time, 'Are you afraid of getting typecast?'" Jackman told aintitcool.com. "There was a period around X-Men 3 where I did notice things were ... I had done other things. I had done Peter Allen on Broadway (in The Boy from Oz), but things just started to get narrow in the offers I was getting. I didn't know if that was from the filmmaker point of view or scripts, but from Les Miserables, Prisoners, things like that, I never really felt that feeling of being trapped. I've really enjoyed being able to do that."

The film stars Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service) as Eddie, and Egerton's versatilty as an actor is a trait Jackman envies. "Taron has got more, like I would say he's 10 years ahead of me in terms of his confidence in terms of his choosing and waiting to choose, and the idea of coming out with Eddie straight afterwards, it seems like the smartest choice now, but that's a bold choice," he said. "I can't think of any actor alive today who could pull off those two movies in a 12-month period so successfully."

Jackman's latest role is as trainer Bronson Peary in Eddie the Eagle, a movie about the British ski jumper.

Deadpool tops Gods of Egypt at box office A

group of ancient Egyptian deities couldn't take down the merch with a mouth.

Marvel's antihero blockbuster Deadpool continued to dominate North American movie theatres over the weekend, earning an estimated $US31.5 million ($A44.16 million) in its third week and besting newcomer Gods of Egypt, according to comScore estimates Sunday. The total domestic haul for 20th Century Fox's comic book adaptation starring Ryan Reynolds as Marvel's foul-mouthed mercenary now stands at $US285.6 million, making it the third highest-grossing R-rated film behind American Sniper and The Passion of the Christ. Lionsgate's Gods of Egypt featuring Gerard Butler as a rebellious Egyptian god debuted in second place with $US14 million. The

film, which reportedly cost $US140 million and also stars Brenton Thwaites and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, is Hollywood's first major flop of the year. "Lionsgate went for it, and I think the unpredictability of this marketplace made it too tough for them," said Paul Dergarabedian, comScore's senior media analyst. "I think we'll probably have to wait until 'Batman v Superman' to see another massive opening weekend." Other newcomers that failed to topple Deadpool this weekend included the feel-good Olympic tale Eddie the Eagle, starring Australian Hugh Jackman, in fifth place with $US6.3 million and the heist romp Triple 9 in sixth place with $US6.1 million. The Revenant was the only Academy Award contender to crack the weekend's Top 10 with $US3.8 million in its 10th week of release. The survival epic leads Oscar nominees with 12 nods at Sunday's 88th annual ceremony, including best picture, best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, best supporting actor for Tom Hardy and best director for Alejandro G Inarritu. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theatres, according to comScore. 1. Deadpool, $US31.5 million. 2. Gods of Egypt, $US14 million. 3. Kung Fu Panda 3, $US9 million. 4. Risen, $US7 million. 5. Eddie the Eagle, $US6.3 million. 6. Triple 9, $US6.1 million. 7. How To Be Single, $US5.2 million. 8. The Witch, $US5 million. 9. he Aussies were among the best-dressed on the Oscars red carpet.

Naomi Watts, Cate Blanchett, Isla Fisher and Margot Robbie stunned with their choice of gorgeous designer gowns. Mad Max:Fury Road director George Miller didn't let the side down either: Naomi Watts - The actress at the Oscars to support partner Liev Schreiber from Spotlight, nominated for Best Film, made sure all eyes were on her in a navy and purple, strapless, shimmery Armani Prive figure-hugging gown, accessorised with a Bulgvari necklace. Cate Blanchett - While Blanchett isn't the frontrunner to win the Best Actress gong, she certainly slayed it on the red carpet wearing a mint green Armani Prive gown. Her romantic, mermaid style gown was covered in handsewn flowers and feathers, with Swarovski crystals attached from head to toe. Margot Robbie - The Wolf of Wall Street star looked stunning in a gold, longsleeved, low-cut Tom Ford dress. Isla Fisher - The actress, who walked the red carpet with husband Sacha Baron Cohen, looked like a fairytale princess in a off-the-shoulder white Marchesa dress with a floral pattern and silver belt. George Miller - with his quirky, round glasses in place, the Australian director wore a tuxedo but mixed up the classic look with a white shirt and white bow-tie combo.

Paul Kelly announces Shakespearean album

A

ustralian music veteran Paul Kelly is releasing a Shakespearean album. Kelly has been inspired by the Bard to release Seven Sonnets & A Song on which he sings six of Shakespeare's sonnets and a song from the play Twelfth Night. The singer-songwriter even picked a Shakespearean date for the album's release, it will be available to download from midnight Greenwich Mean Time as April 22 ticks over to April 23, the day of Shakespeare's death 400 years ago. Kelly has been influenced by Shakespeare's writings throughout his career and cites his 20kg three volumes of the Collected works of William Shakespeare as one of his most treasured possessions. "Just about anything you want to say, Shakespeare's said it already," Kelly said. Over the past 18 months, while touring his ensemble record The Merri Soul Sessions, Kelly managed to fit in the recording of this new record in various studios. He has teamed up with some of

the country's finest musicians including Lucky Oceans and Alice Keath, along with regular members of his own band Peter Luscombe, Bill McDonald, Ash Naylor, Cameron Bruce, and Vika and Linda Bull, to record the album. Vika Bull also takes the lead vocals on a non-Shakespearian piece, My True Love Hath My Heart, written by his contemporary Sir Philip Sidney. There will also be videos released over the coming months for Sonnet 73 by Sunny Leunig, Sonnet 18 by Lucy Dyson and My True Love Hath My Heart by Andy Doherty. Kelly will launch the record with a live appearance at the Sydney Writer's Festival and in conjunction with Bell Shakespeare at the State Library of NSW on April 23 and at The Wheeler Centre in Melbourne. He will again appear at the Sydney Writer's Festival on Monday, May 16, to speak about Shakespeare and perform several sonnets. *The record will be available digitally and on vinyl on April 23.

David Bowie's son to be a dad

D

avid Bowie's son Duncan Jones has announced he is to be a father for the first time.

The 44-year-old posted the news on Twitter and also made a reference to his father's death from cancer. A hand-drawn cartoon of a baby with an umbilical cord protruding from its stomach and a speech bubble with the words "I'm waiting" accompanied the message. "One month since dad died today. Made this card for him at Christmas. Due in June. Circle of life. Love you, granddad," he wrote. The award-winning director of Moon is the late British rock star's eldest child. He is married to photographer Rodene Ronquillo. In 2013, Jones' wife was given the all-clear following her own cancer battle which saw her undergo a double mastectomy. "My fiance, at the time, ended up finding my lump, it was right underneath my breast, above my rib," she said in an interview with Popsugar.

He has been estranged from his mother for nearly 30 years. On January 10, he confirmed his 69-year-old father had lost his 18-month fight with liver cancer on Twitter. "Very sorry and sad to say it's true," his tweet read. "I'll be offline for a while. Love to all." Jones, the director of the upcoming film adaptation of Warcraft, was also at the helm of sci-fi thriller Source Code. The couple's first child would have been Bowie's first grandchild. Meanwhile, Bowie's widow Iman broke her silence on social media for the first time since her husband's death. The 60-year-old former supermodel posted a simple message on her official Twitter page that read: "Love & gratitude" on Saturday.

Ten Out Of Ten Shannon Noll S

hannon Noll’s everyman appeal lies in his honesty, he strikes a chord with legions of music fans, tapping into a pure emotion that’s both his own and instantly relatable. Since taking to the stage and commencing his successful recording career, Australia’s favourite son “Nollsie” has on to receive acclaim with certified tripleplatinum sales, number #1 hits, five top 10 albums, has 17 platinum and three gold accreditations, and boasts a reputation as the only Australian male artist in national chart history to have ever achieved ten consecutive top ten singles.

PEARL spoke to the homegrown-hero in the midst of his national We Only Live Once Tour, and while he’s no longer championing the classic flavour-saver, it’s clear that he’s still the honest and passionate bloke we came to know through our TV screens all those years ago. While Noll is humbled by the positive reception of his new release, he agrees that We Only Live Once has a broad appeal that comes from its uplifting hooks and strong positive message, particularly at a time when the media, government and global climate is not so positive. “That’s the beauty of music; it can take you away from the troubles in your life at the time. We don’t get too many breaks from the seriousness of what’s going on in the world these days; everywhere you turn there seems to be something heavy going on. I think to be able to be able to shut all that out for a little song is a great gift to give and receive.” In addition to his new material, Shannon Noll has been treating crowds to classics like What About Me and In Pieces, and even taking on a new cover of Sia’s huge hit Chandelier.

“Obviously the recognition and the profiling was the advantage on our year. I think the disadvantage; particularly for us as the first year products, was the actual concept of the show itself. We had to put up with a fair bit of backlash from the industry, people not wanting to accept it. Today it’s standard practice to make a break through in these shows but we really had to weather that storm.”

Does he believe he’d have experienced the same success had he been on a different talent show or even a later season of Idol?

T

ake one part Screaming Jet, and one part Dirty Deed, and shake repeatedly on a rock n ‘roll roadtrip for 25 years, and you end up with one hell of a lethal concoction that is the Aussie Outlaws. Jets bass-man Paul Woseen and Dirty Deeds front man Alfi Rocker are heading back to town with the Westernport Hotel in their sights for a rock n ‘roll rampage on Labour Day Eve Sunday March 13. Dirty Deeds, Australia’s original ACDC tribute show gave fans exactly what they expected on the main stage at last months Westernport Festival. Front man Alfi Rocker was later joined on stage by The Screaming Jets key songwriter and bass man for surprise finale after the fireworks, leaving an electric crowd hungry for more. Both founding members in their own bands, both celebrating 25 years on the road with recent anniversary tours, Pauly and Alfi take time out of their busy schedules and head south for the summer and a night of Aussie classics not to be missed. One would have to expect some Acca Dacca and Jets anthems in the mix…but then again, anything could happen with these two boys and their band mates, already winning over fans around Melbourne with their rockin new Aussie Outlaw combo.

SARAH RZEK 'THIS TOWN' ‘Molly’ Meldrum brings new single to life! Sarah Rzek is an old musical soul in a young body. The fresh faced Melbourne Bayside singer/songwriter with a unique, soulful voice has been recording music for over five years and described as a fresh faced talent and has appeared on shows such as Australia’s Got Talent and the Planet Unearth TV show. More recently, influential music writer Cameron Adams from the Herald-Sun named her among only 3 musicians that he identified as being hot in 2016! It was in 2015 when Sarah first came to the attention of one Ian ‘Molly’ Meldrum who has lost none of his talent for hearing a great voice and recognising amazing talent when a demo recording of ‘This Town’ found its way to him. Within weeks, Molly was recording the song with Sarah and her band at Sing Sing Studios in Melbourne with the assistance of renowned violinist Sally Cooper, the divine Colleen Hewitt with the Wesley College Elsternwick Choir and talented young engineer Matt Neighbour. ‘This Town’ is Sarah’s first major commercial release and is a gorgeous introduction to the twenty-one year old, who’s soaring, yet smoky vocal and unique gift for song writing finds her positioned well beyond her years. Sarah is a very welcome new addition to the LUXOR label under the mentorship of Molly. Sarah is also gaining a strong live hometown following and is planning to tour across the country as the year unfolds. So, ‘Do yourself a favour!’

The 2016 Mahindra Genio Great value for the Australian ute buyer

M

ahindra has released the 2016 Genio single cab and dual cab ute and cab/chassis into a highly competitive market segment where value for money and functionality are the major attractions for buyers of working vehicles. Powered by the 2.2 litre, four cylinder, turbocharged mHAWK diesel engine and with a five-speed manual gearbox, the new 2016 Genio offers one of the most spacious cabins in its class, with impressive head, shoulder and leg room making it of particular appeal to Australian Tradies. With its compact frontal design and minimal overhang the Genio makes full advantage of being able to minimise engine intrusion into the passenger compartment, increasing available space in the cabin. Also significant are the large, uninterrupted door openings for front and rear seat access that makes entry and exit much easier than many other popular ute designs. Mahindra has kept to the design parameter of a ute being a working vehicle. With a strong focus on practicality, Genio offers sufficient power and performance with an impressive payload for those buyers that want a comfortable work vehicle at a sensible and affordable price. Available in both single cab and dual cab variants and in 4x2 and 4x4, each model is powered by the same 2.2 litre, four-cylinder diesel with variable geometry turbocharger that produces 88kW (120bhp) at 4,000 rpm with peak torque of 280Nm rated through from 1,800-2,800 rpm. Gear selection comes only in the form of a five-speed manual transmission, it runs on 215/70R15 tyres on alloy rims (optional) and it offers a fuel tank capacity of 75 litres. The single cab, base model 4x2 cab chassis, including base heavy duty aluminium tray has a driveaway price of $19,990, with the 4x4 driveline adding a further $3,500. The drive-away price structure for the 4x2 dual cab chassis and ute models is identical at $24,990, plus the $3500 upgrade to 4x4. When it comes to payload, the Genio offers a full 1260kg for the single cab in 4x2 form and 1100kg for the dual cab, dropping 100kg for each model if the 4x4 driveline is selected. The tow weight capacity for a braked trailer is restricted to a maximum of 1800kg. The cab/chassis versions come

with a high quality alloy tray from Queensland manufacturer Triple MMM, with tray dimensions of 2700 x 1777mm for the single cab and 1950mm length x 1777mm in width for the double cab. The removable drop-sides and tailgate are 250mm in height and the GVM is 2980kg. In line with normal conventional ute suspension systems, Genio uses a double wishbone, front independent design with coil springs, while at the rear, the semi-elliptical multi-leaf springs provide a well controlled ride through the variations of light load to fully laden operation. Brakes are disc front and drum rear. The fitment of 15-inch rims and tyres means a low tray deck height of 910mm unladen, reducing the need to lift cargo higher than waist level and facilitating the reach of the cargo from either side or the rear of the tray. From a safety perspective there are SRS airbags for the driver and front passenger, side intrusion beams in the door construction, crash protection and crumple zones incorporated in the design, a collapsible steering column, and ABS braking. Air conditioning, power steering, central locking, cruise control, power windows and audio controls mounted on the steering wheel are standard and the optional Bluetooth phone accessory operates through a push button control on the dashboard. The on-board Digital Drive Assist System (DDAS), trip meter and data indicator (Dual Cab Only), covers a wide range of information displayed in a central binnacle on the dashboard. Information highlighted includes interior and exterior ambient temperature, date and time, speed, fuel consumption and gear ratio selected. Interior stowage areas are particularly useful, with a slide-out tray under the driver’s seat, plus storage space under the rear seat squab on dual cab variants to locate clothing, tools and other items. “The 2016 Genio really holds its own against competitors by setting out to provide functionality and practicality in a cost affordable overall package. With the best in class interior space and high-level of standard equipment the Genio looks set to become a firm favourite with Aussie Tradies.” said Russell Thiele, National Sales Manager – Auto at Mahindra Automotive Australia Pty Ltd.

FISHINGREPORT SUMMER'S OVER AND AUTUMN'S HERE!

T

he fishing is still firing in Western Port, with the Whiting challenge on this weekend we’re sure to see plenty of anglers from all over Victoria and interstate trying their luck. Hopefully the weather conditions are favourable, good luck to all competing. There has been some great offshore action with Blue Sharks, Mako Sharks and King Fish being caught by those venturing out. Also for those not lucky enough to catch the prize species there’s some thumping Salmon that provides plenty of action for all on board. Motty, local angling celebrity managed to dong a nice size Hammer Head while chasing Gummies down in the Western entrance of the Port, and there has also been some great captures of Gummy Sharks with some heading up to the 20kg mark. There is still plenty of good Pinkie and Squid action to be had by those wanting to chase a species other than Whiting. Port Phillip Bay has also seen some good Pinkie action around St.Kilda, Whiting seems to going okay in the usual haunts and there is also some tasty Calamari to be found on the inner edge especially around the Mornington and Mt Martha area.

GIVEAWAY WINNER: is Kev who lost the Mako but managed to catch the Blue, he will receive a $25 gift voucher from Amazing Bait and Tackle/ Spot On fishing in Hastings

"I hit a lot of good putts, some didn't go in but fortunately that was enough in the end"

Curry heroics save Golden State at OKC

S

tephen Curry's 32-foot bomb with six-tenths of a second remaining in overtime gave visiting Golden State a thrilling 121-118 victory over the Oklahoma City on Saturday night.

Durant fouled out in the extra session, but the Thunder still held a 118-115 lead with 33 seconds to play after a layup by Andre Roberson off a nice feed from Russell Westbrook, who had 26 points and 13 assists.

Curry scored 12 of his 46 points in overtime as the Warriors (53-5) won their fifth straight But Thompson tied it with a three-point play, and after Westbrook missed a jumper, Curry game and continued their march toward dribbled upcourt and caught the Thunder's NBA history. defence backpedalling. The win keeps the Warriors ahead of the pace of the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls, who hold the NBA record with 72 wins. Curry was 12-of-16 from the arc as he tied the NBA mark for three-pointers in a record shared by Kobe Bryant and Donyell Marshall. Curry was particularly happy with the win after the Warriors got a rare spray from coach Steve Kerr at halftime when they were down 57-46. "I think it lit a fire under us to go out and get this win," Curry said. "A lot of heart and never quit has been our mantra all year. "A lot had to go our way down the stretch, huge stops that ended possessions and I just had enough daylight to get it in." He has 288 three-pointers this season, surpassing his NBA record of 286 from last season.

Scott wins Honda Classic in Florida A

dam Scott has claimed his first US PGA Tour title in almost two years, winning the Honda Classic in Florida by one shot. The Australian carded a last-round evenpar 70 on Sunday to finish at nine-under for the tournament and triumph in a finalgroup battle with Spaniard Sergio Garcia. It is 35-year-old Scott's 12th official win on the US PGA Tour - the most of any player under the age of 40 - and his first since the Crowne Plaza Invitational in May 2014. "My game has come into a really good spot since the back-end of last year and now starting this year," he said after the victory. "I've been working hard to get it there, because it was slipping a little. It was a bit loose last year - the consistency wasn't there and I made some nice progress in all areas. "Especially probably noticeably on the greens and it paid off this week." The victory will go a long way to erasing any doubts about world No.13 Scott's ability to adapt to the short putter, after a rule change forced him to discard the long one he used so successfully in several of his big wins in recent years including the 2013 Masters. Scott's day began with an opening-hole 14-foot putt for birdie which helped continue his form from last week's secondplace finish at the Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles. "I got off to a good start and hit one on the first and that definitely relaxed me," said Scott. "I hit a lot of good putts, some didn't go in but fortunately that was enough in the end. "But this is a tough track it's hard to get it close all the time. I played exceptional yesterday so I had to reel in my expectations today and the pressure off Sunday." Americans Blayne Barber and Justin Thomas finished four shots off the pace in a tie for third. John Senden was the next highest-placed Australian, finishing at one-under for the tournament in a four-way tie for 10th.

PSG's 36-game unbeaten streak ends at Lyon

P

aris St Germain's league record 36-game unbeaten streak came to an abrupt halt in Ligue 1 as they lost 2-1 at Olympique Lyonnais on Sunday. Maxwel Cornet and Sergi Darder, with an audacious piece of skill, scored the first-half goals that handed PSG their first league defeat since a 3-2 loss at Bordeaux in March last year. PSG are still 23 points clear at the top of the French table and remain untouchable favourites to win their fourth consecutive title. "Congratulations to Lyon," PSG defender David Luiz told Canal Plus television. "They played well. "We didn't play well tonight and the manager told us to wake up a bit at halftime but it was too late. "We played badly and although we scored a goal, we were tired." Yet in their 28th game of the campaign, their chance of beating the league record unbeaten run of 32 games in a single season, set by Nantes in 1994-95, was ended despite a Lucas Moura goal after the break having offered them hopes of maintaining their extraordinary sequence. Lyon have flattered to deceive this season but started strongly and took the lead in the 13th minute when

Cornet brought the ball down inside the box, evaded Gregory van der Wiel and slammed the ball past Kevin Trapp. Darder doubled Lyon's advantage in first-half injury time when he received a cross from Rafael, flicked the ball over the head of PSG captain Thiago Silva and finished emphatically. Paris were lucky to go in at halftime with eleven men, midfielder Thiago Motta escaping with a yellow card after punching Jordan Ferri in the face in the 23rd minute. They improved after the break when manager Laurent Blanc introduced Javier Pastore for Benjamin Stambouli. Pastore was quickly influential as PSG got back into the game in the 51st minute, the Argentine playmaker tearing into the Lyon box before flicking the ball into the path of Lucas, who beat Anthony Lopes with aplomb. Lyon move up to third on 42 points, eight behind second-place Monaco, who could only draw 0-0 draw at Nantes on Sunday. Marseille's match at Gazelec Ajaccio was postponed due to bad weather while Caen moved above Nice into fourth after securing a 2-1 victory at St Etienne, whose own European aspirations have been dented after going three games without a win.

Bisping beats Silva in UFC in London

M

ichael Bisping survived a wild ending to the third round and beat Anderson Silva with a unanimous decision in the main event of UFC Fight Night 84 on Saturday night.

To add to the tension, Bisping was struck with a low blow, while Silva (163) was inadvertently poked in the eye. Bisping was bleeding from several cuts on his face by the end, but the final scorecard had him winning unanimously 48-47.

Silva and numerous ringside officials thought Silva had won the fight near the "I wanted this fight my entire life," end of the third round after he knocked Bisping said. Victory, Sydney holding onto hope

B

oth Big Blue managers are adamant their sides can rise to the top two of the A-League by season's end despite a result neither wanted on Saturday night.

Victory coach Kevin Muscat was barely short of apoplectic when discussing the result, coming after a 1-0 home reverse to Adelaide.

Glouftsis Crowley adds to AFL roles impresses in C AFL debut

arlton fans were onto Ryan Crowley as soon as he first touched the ball in Sunday's AFL pre-season match. Regardless of the guernsey, the former Fremantle star and new Essendon replacement is always the subject of opposition supporters' vitriol.

10 replacement players who took to the field against the Blues. Sam Michael, Sam Grimley, Jonathan Simpkin and Crowley all had solid games as Essendon overwhelmed a young Carlton team.

Grimley has a suspect goalkicking action, but he and Joe Daniher worked But while that was the same for Crowley, well as key forwards. it was not just his team that had "Neither of them are going to be the changed. target for us - as in just one key target,"

FL umpiring director Wayne Campbell admits his daughter's race earlier on Sunday did not make him as nervous as the start of the CarltonEssendon match. Eleni Glouftsis, the league's first female field umpire, had asked if she could take the first bounce.

The man who drove opponents to distraction with his tagging at Fremantle is exploring different roles with the Bombers.

Worsfold said.

He started Sunday's 10-goal win as an opportunistic forward and when Crowley went into the midfield after half time, it was with much more of a free rein.

Michael worked hard in the ruck, a position Worsfold wants him to make his own.

"My daughter was in a race this morning at Nippers and I was a little bit nervous for that," Campbell said.

"He's not going to finesse too much," Worsfold said with a grin.

"I was very nervous for Eleni. "But she's a really competent bounce.

Fellow top-up players Matt Dea and Mark Jamar will probably come into the team for next Saturday's Shepparton game against Geelong.

"We get a bit nervous when all of them are bouncing, really - but obviously the first female to do a game at this level, first bounce, (a crowd) of 18,000.

But James Polkinghorne has a calf muscle injury, while Nathan Grima, Mathew Stokes and James Kelly are another week away at least from playing.

"There's probably a little bit more riding on it."

That will no doubt change when the need arises, but coach John Worsfold has now said several times that he wants to try Crowley in different roles. "We'll have a look at him where he's not accountable for anyone, which was the second half ... but we also want to see what he brings in that forward line," Worsfold said. "At this stage we'll just keep throwing him around - in season, it still may be a real mix." Crowley was among four of Essendon's

"They're both going to be able to play higher and push back to the goalsquare as well."

Youngster Jason Ashby also rolled his ankle in the last quarter of Sunday's match.

Boxer Browne treated like movie star

A

ustralia boxer Lucas Browne is enjoying "movie star" star treatment including an armed detail of three security officers leading into his world heavyweight title challenge in Chechnya.

"I think after the first day of being here and experiencing what's going on, I'm 100 per cent relaxed and ready to get on and focus on what I need to do."

Browne (23-0, 20 KOs) will attempt to become the first Australian to hold a portion of the heavyweight crown when he takes on Uzbekistan's regular WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev (34-2-1, 21 KOs) on Saturday. Browne admitted before flying in that he was nervous about travelling to a city which was hard hit in two recent wars and once rated the most-destroyed city on earth. "I came over and wasn't sure what to expect," Browne told AAP from Grozny. "I was a bit apprehensive, but I can honestly say that I have been treated with the utmost respect. "The people here are extremely humble and extremely open. I've been treated like a movie star, it's been absolutely sensational.

"It's little bit strange, I'm generally quite a private person and being a bigger lad myself, no-one tends to bother me anyway," Browne said. "At the same time it is extremely reassuring to know that there are people here to look after us and to show us around. They are very nice fellows." Browne's manager Matt Clark described the training facilities as world class and made it clear the fight was being treated as a big event. "Lucas and Chagaev are on enormous billboards on the main road into town," Clark told AAP. "They've turned one side of a building into what looks like a makeshift heavy bag. "There's life-sized cardboard cut-outs of the fighters."

While the bounce did not go perfectly straight, it was good enough not to need a recall and Glouftsis was on her way.

In the last week Glouftsis has been that sporting rarity - a positive story about umpiring. She has spoken impressively and earned wide praise for her trailblazing achievement. The 23-year-old was applauded before and after the pre-season game at Ikon Park and had a solid match. Asked to rate herself, Glouftsis said her game was a six or seven out of 10. Campbell simply said she was "wonderful". "I really wanted to take the first bounce and get it out of the way," Glouftsis said. "I wasn't 100 per cent happy with it, but I think the rest of the day I bounced well. "There are a lot of things to work on. "It was just really good to see that intensity and see the pace of the game, know what I have to strive for." Glouftsis is one of 12 rookies in the AFL umpiring system. This season she will be on the bench at AFL matches, as well as continuing to umpire VFL games. The next step would be graduating to the AFL senior list. Whatever the future, Campbell likes her attitude. "The fact she took the first bounce shows enormous courage," he said. "It shows she's not going to shy away from any hard calls. "She looked comfortable, paid the frees that needed to be paid ... it was a good result."

Cats to meet full strength Dockers FOOTBALL

F

remantle are set to treat their final NAB Challenge clash against Geelong as a full dress rehearsal for the Round one clash against Western Bulldogs.

Fremantle's fringe players will make way for their senior teammates.

Giant ruckman Aaron Sandilands, who'll miss the clash against the Bulldogs on March 27 due to suspension will be left out of the side after he received a one-game ban by the Match Review Panel for a high bump on Richmond's Ben Griffiths during the NAB Challenge clash in Mandurah.

"I think people that are trying to cement spots, certainly I didn't think there was anyone that really sewed it up.

After holding on to beat Adelaide in a thriller in Mt Barker on Sunday, Dockers coach Ross Lyon said new club captain David Mundy, forward Hayden Ballantyne, new recruit Harley Bennell, defender Lee Spurr and ruckman Zac Clarke would all potentially play against the Cats in two weeks time. And after failing to impress with their opportunity against the Crows, some of

"I thought a couple didn't put their best foot forward today," Lyon said.

"I thought they were solid without stamping it." Only two Dockers - Tom Sheridan (28) and Nat Fyfe (26) - reached 20 possessions, but the likes of Brady Grey, Sam Collins and Ethan Hughes failed to impress, although they had only limited opportunities. Lyon may find it harder to ignore Lachie Weller and Ed Langdon who both showed that they aren't too far off. Weller, in particular, is showing plenty of run and an ability to hit the scoreboard. He kicked the first goal against the Crow on

Sunday, a long shot that should have been a nine-pointer, but was incorrectly given just six. Its a good thing they won by two points. Jon Griffin was the leading ruckman on Sunday, with Crow Sam Jacobs and Sandilands both missing from the content - the latter a late withdrawal from the extended squad. Jack Hannath may struggle to keep his place in the side with Clarke likely to play against the Cats. Sandilands was fit to play, but with Lyon now focused on Round 1, he will need to complete his pre-season on the training track. "We probably won't even play him against Geelong, to be truthful, because he doesn't need it," Lyon said. "He had a great summer."
