Race for Zika vaccine gathers momentum T

ropical Southeast Asian countries say they were bracing for the mosquitoborne Zika virus, with Malaysia saying it could "spread quickly" if introduced. Zika, linked to severe birth defects including babies born with abnormally small heads, is wreaking havoc in Brazil where the government has deployed more than 200,000 troops to eradicate mosquitoes.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) said recently that the virus was "spreading explosively" and could infect as many as four million people in the Americas. No treatment or vaccine is available. In Thailand, where just one case of Zika has been reported so far this year, the likelihood of Zika spreading was low, officials said, partly because of better access to health care and because Thailand was dealing with a smaller area. Thailand detected its first Zika case in 2012 and has recorded an average of five cases a year, according to the Ministry of Public Health. The WHO said the rapid spread of Zika in the Americas was due to a lack of immunity among a population that had not been previously exposed to the virus. The Zika virus is spread through the Aedes aegypti mosquito - responsible for dengue, yellow fever and other tropical diseases. The WHO's Western Pacific Region Office in Manila said as long as Aedes mosquitoes circulated in the region "it can be anticipated that the virus will emerge". Malaysia's Health Ministry said Zika had not yet been detected. "If it is introduced by an infected Malaysian or by a visitor to Malaysia, it could spread quickly," said Lokman Hakim Sulaiman, Malaysia's Health Ministry deputy director-general. In the Western Pacific, Zika was first reported in Micronesia in 2007. In Australia, the foreign ministry's travel advice website said there had been no reported cases of Zika. The New Zealand Herald reported that one local man had been admitted to hospital with symptoms linked to the Zika virus. The Ministry of Health said it had received nine Zika notifications this year. All of the travellers had been in the Pacific Islands and eight of them had recovered. Companies and scientists are racing to create a Zika vaccine as concern grows over the mosquito-borne virus that has been linked to severe birth defects and is spreading quickly through the Americas. Zika is now present in 23 countries and territories in the Americas. Brazil, the

hardest-hit country, has reported around 3,700 cases of the devastating birth defect called microcephaly that are strongly suspected to be related to Zika.

At a special meeting in Geneva, WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan said the virus - which Rebranded, Refurbished, Refine Rebranded, Refurbished, Refined has been linked Kitchen open all day - Breakfast/Lunch/Dinn Kitchen open all day - Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner Rebranded, Refurbished, Refined to birth defects and neurological entertainment and current menus at www.thegpo.com.au Upcoming entertainment andUpcoming current menus at www.thegpo.com.au THE PENINSULA’S PLACE TO MEET 1003 POINT NEPEAN RD, 1003 ROSEBUD 3200 POINT 5982 NEPEAN RD, ROSEBUD 5982 3200 problems - was "spreading Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner – 7 days explosively."

According to the US Centers for Disease Control, the Zika virus is now in more than 20 countries, mostly in Central and South America. Chan said although there was no definitive proof that the Zika virus was responsible for a spike in the number of babies being born with abnormally small heads in Brazil, "the level of alarm is extremely high."

according to one of its lead developers. Current efforts to combat Zika are focused on protecting people from being bitten and on eradicating mosquitoes, a tough task in many parts of Latin America, where people live in poverty and there are many breeding grounds for the insect.

She also noted a possible relationship between Zika infection and Guillain-Barre syndrome, which can cause temporary paralysis. "The possible links, only recently suspected, have rapidly changed the risk profile of Zika from a mild threat to one of alarming proportions," Chan said. There is no specific treatment or vaccine for Zika, which is related to dengue scientists have struggled for years to develop a dengue vaccine but have failed to create a viable shot so far. The UN health agency last declared an international emergency over the devastating 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which ended up killing more than 11,000 people. Vaccine developers have made clear a vaccine for widespread public use is at least months, if not years, away. The closest prospect may be from a consortium including drugmaker Inovio Pharmaceuticals that could have a vaccine ready for emergency use before year-end,

In Brazil, authorities are trying to shed light on the link between Zika virus related to 4000 babies born with microcephaly.

Vic Schools evacuated after bomb threats T

hreatening phone calls to at least 15 schools in NSW and Victoria have caused schools to be evacuated and disrupted thousands of students in the first week of term. It follows similar evacuations in interstate and overseas schools due to threatening phone calls over 24 hours. Cowes Primary School on Phillip Island evacuated more than 500 students after a threat was phoned in about 11am. The school's assistant principal Rodney McKenzie said a receptionist received the threatening call.

"Like all schools, we have an emergency management plan in place for situations like this, and we practise these throughout the year," principal Brad Evans said in a statement to parents. An investigation is also underway in NSW after seven schools, including five in Sydney, were evacuated. "Making such threats is a serious criminal offence and every effort will be made to identify the person or persons responsible," NSW Police said in a statement.

Victoria Police said it was trying to find the origin of the calls but did not have any reason to think they were terrorism-related.

The NSW Department of Education and Victorian Education Department issued statements saying the schools were taking precautionary measures, including evacuations, to ensure the safety of students.

Record heat 'caused by man-made warming' record-breaking string of hot years since 2000 is almost certainly a sign of manmade global warming, with vanishingly small chances that it was caused by random, natural swings, a recent study showed. Last year was the hottest since records began in the 19th century in a trend that almost all scientists blame on greenhouse gases from burning of fossil fuels, stoking heat waves, droughts, downpours and rising sea levels. "Recent observed runs of record temperatures are extremely unlikely to have occurred in the absence of human-caused global warming," a US-led team of experts wrote in the journal Scientific Reports. Written before 2015 temperature data were released, it estimated the chance of the record run - with up to 13 of the 15 warmest years all from 2000 to 2014 - was between one in 770 and one in 10,000 if the series were random with no human influence. Lead author Michael Mann, a professor of meteorology at Pennsylvania State University, said that the group's computer

"Climate change is real, human-caused and no longer subtle - we're seeing it play out before our eyes," he wrote in an email. Natural variations include shifts in the sun's output or volcanic eruptions, which dim sunlight. "Natural climate variations just can't explain the observed recent global heat records, but man-made global warming can," Stefan Rahmstorf, a co-author from the Potsdam Institute of Climate Impact, said. Last month, almost 190 nations agreed at a summit in Paris to the strongest deal yet to shift from fossil fuels towards cleaner energies such as wind and solar power to limit warming. Separately, the UN's World Meteorological Organisation confirmed data showing 2015 was by far the hottest year on record and noted that a powerful El Nino event, warming the surface of the Pacific Ocean, had stoked extra heat.

Scientists halt Type 1 diabetes in trial A

been trying to find a cure for the disease since his son Sam was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes as a baby - also worked on the new studies.

Experts from US hospitals and institutions including Harvard University managed to transplant cells into mice, which immediately began producing insulin.

The human islet cells used for the new research were generated from human stem cells developed by Prof Melton.

The team was also able to show they could prevent the cells being rendered useless by the body's own immune system, which was effectively "switched off" thanks to scientific work. It means a cure for Type 1 diabetes could be much closer. Scientists are now working to replicate the results in people with the condition. The findings build on the news at the end of 2014 that experts had discovered how to make huge quantities of insulin-producing cells. Aussie culture 'driving drunken violence' T

oo many Australians think they've got a right to belt someone when they've got a skin full of booze, Queensland's police chief says.

erupting, where patrons attack security staff, or emergency services staff, the way it seems to happen here in our country," he said.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart says Australia has a drinking problem that too often results in horrific violence playing out in the streets and in homes across the country.

"People (in other countries) seem to be able to drink and even sometimes drink to excess, but it doesn't automatically mean they then get in a fight, which seems to be part of the Australian culture."

He says other countries he's visited don't seem to have the same problem and puts it down to a national culture that seems forgiving of drunken violence. "It just seems to be part of our culture - that having a few drinks means it's OK to belt someone," Mr Stewart told ABC radio on Monday. "I'm not saying everyone's in that category, but there are very, very many who seem to do that." He made the comments after a spate of horrific attacks in Queensland, including the one-punch death of 18-year-old Cole Miller in an unprovoked assault in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley last month. Mr Stewart said Australians should be able to enjoy a night out without wondering if they'll survive. "There is no country I've every visited ... where I've seen the type of violence

Mr Stewart said it was fine for people to drink, but it was time for a serious discussion about the role of the national culture in alcohol-related violence. He rounded on parents who allow their children to hold wild parties and drink unsupervised. "Where are the parents of these kids? Where are those who have some responsibility for them, in terms of the types of attitudes they now have," he asked. "What are they going to be like when a wife, or spouse, or partner, says to them later in life 'don't have another drink, you're getting out of control'? Does that meant they're going to belt them too?"

Two men have been charged over an assault in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley that resulted in 18-year-old Cole's death.

Mr Stewart said the timing of his comments had nothing to do with a parliamentary committee preparing to report in a week's time on a new bill aimed at reducing alcohol-

related violence. "I think we can do something about it if we want to. But it's going to take the whole community to do it."

Women make history with Pacific crossing T

hey've been smashed by waves in the dark, circled by sharks and spent most of the last nine months sleeping two hours at a time.

But, after 257 days, a six-woman team of British rowers have become the first female crew and the first crew rowing four at a time to cross the Pacific Ocean. The Coxless Crew's more than 15,500km adventure started in San Francisco in April and ended with wobbly steps onto Marlin Marina at Cairns on Monday. "You feel a little bit like a sock man," crew member Natalia Cohen said of her first steps off the boat. "It's actually really strange to know that this is the final time." The sextet rowed 24-hours straight in twohour shifts and only stopped on land twice, for up to a week, during the journey. Their 29-foot boat, named Doris, contained a cabin the size of a two-man tent in which the women washed, cleaned and slept. "It's very hot and very sweaty, especially in big waves where we have to keep the hatchets closed," Emma Mitchell said. "It's kind of like being in a two-man tentsized sauna. Too much exercise won't aid weight loss first thing I mention to anyone asking about the implications of this work for exercise. "There is tons of evidence that exercise is important for keeping our bodies and minds healthy, and this work does nothing to change that message. "What our work adds is that we also need to focus on diet, particularly when it comes to managing our weight and preventing or reversing unhealthy weight gain." Pontzer decided to explore the link between activity and energy expenditure after working among the Hadza, a community of traditional hunter-gatherers in northern Tanzania. He said: "The Hadza are incredibly active, walking long distances each day and doing a lot of hard physical work as part of their everyday life. Humans may have caused huge Australian extinctions G

iant animals from down under, including a 450 kilogram kangaroo and wombat weighing almost two tonnes, may have been driven to extinction by early Australians, new research suggests. Other members of the continent's lost megafauna include a seven-metre long lizard, a 135kg marsupial lion and a tortoise the size of a Volkswagen car. But it was a two-metre tall flightless bird, Genyornis, that has led experts to the conclusion that people may be implicated in their disappearance. The huge bird lived in much of Australia before the arrival of humans around 50,000 years ago. Now scientists have uncovered evidence that early humans were collecting, cooking and eating Genyornis eggs. Burned eggshell fragments were found at more than 200 sites right across Australia. Lead researcher Professor Gifford Miller, from the University of Colorado at Boulder, US, said: "We consider this the first and only secure evidence that humans were directly preying on now-extinct Australian megafauna." Different dating techniques showed that the

blackened fragments were between 44,000 and 54,000 years old, and probably no younger than 47,000 years. Chemical analysis suggested a localised heat source, consistent with deliberately-lit human fires rather than wild fires. Many of the burned shell pieces were found in tight clusters less than 10 feet across, the scientists reported in the journal Nature Communications. "We argue that the conditions are consistent with early humans harvesting Genyornis eggs, cooking them over fires, and then randomly discarding the eggshell fragments in and around their cooking fires." More than 85 per cent of Australia's mammals, birds and reptiles weighing over 50kg vanished shortly after the arrival of the first humans, who are believed to have travelled from Indonesian islands to the continent's northern coast on rafts. The fate of Genyornis may have been shared by other animals preyed upon by the early settlers, the scientists believe. Climate change has also been proposed as the main factor responsible for the loss of prehistoric megafauna, both in Australia and other continents.

Activists target Julie Bishop in LA

"This is a blight on Australia."

US animal rights activists have interrupted Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop's appearance at a Los Angeles university. The activists, holding up bloody, graphic photos of livestock and calling for an end to Australia's live animal exports, held their protest during a questionand-answer session on Friday on the UCLA campus as part of the G'Day USA program. "Can I talk to you later?" Ms Bishop asked activist Amanda Copeland. Ms Copeland declined the invitation and kept describing what she said was the inhumane treatment of Australia's live export animals. Some of the 100 or so audience members, including US and Australian officials, told the activist to "sit down". Ms Bishop, who had been discussing the role of Australia, the US and China in the Asia-Pacific, calmed the room by allowing Ms Copeland to continue. "Let her go," the foreign minister said from the stage. Soon after Ms Copeland finished, another activist, Glenn Alexander, stood up and continued to lambast Australia's live export trade. Two UCLA police officers, armed with guns and Tasers, arrived and led Mr Alexander out of the room. Ms Bishop agreed to privately speak to a third activist when the Q&A event concluded. Ms Copeland, of the Earth Peace Foundation, said she had unsuccessfully tried to set up a meeting with the Australian Consulate in LA so took her message directly to Ms Bishop. "We feel very strongly this must end," Ms Copeland said. "This is a blight on Australia."

Facebook to add 6 new emotions It won't be long before Facebook's 1.6 billion users have more ways to quickly express their feelings on the world's largest social network. After four months of testing outside the US, Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg says that "pretty soon" six new emotions will be added to the social network throughout the world. The additional options will expand Facebook beyond the renowned thumbs-up symbol that people click on to show they like a comment, photo or video posted on the social network.

Young fear losing their jobs to robots F

our out of 10 young people believe machines will be able to do their jobs within a decade, an international survey has found. Nearly half of young workers surveyed in Western countries said their education did not prepare them to do their jobs. The skills gap is especially pronounced in Europe, according to a poll of 9000 16- to 25-year-olds in nine of the world's biggest nations commissioned by Indian business and software services firm Infosys. Almost 80 per cent globally said they had to learn new skills not taught to them in school and that rapid

The new reactions will include symbols for "angry", "sad", "wow", "haha", "yay" and "love". "We want people to be able to share all of the things that are meaningful to them, not just the things that are happy and that people are going to like when they see it," Zuckerberg said. Facebook is hoping the additional choices will encourage people to share their thoughts more frequently and hang out on the social network for even longer periods than they already do. Facebook has been testing the different reactions in Chile, the Philippines, Portugal, Ireland, Spain, Japan and Colombia. Zuckerberg said Facebook's engineers still need to make a few more "tweaks" before the new options are offered in other parts of the world.

technology change - the threat of being overtaken by robots or smart systems required constant learning of fresh skills to compensate. The study surveyed about 1000 young people each in Australia, Brazil, Britain, China, France, Germany, India and the United States, as well as South Africa, where a smaller sample of 700 was polled. Infosys Chief Executive Vishal Sikka said technologies have evolved far faster than what was thought possible even 10 years ago, while the educational system remains wedded to practices initially designed for agrarian societies 300 years ago. "We must transition away from our past; shift the focus from learning what we already know to an education focused on exploring what hasn't happened yet," he said in response to the findings. Globally, while almost twothirds of those queried said they felt positive about their job prospects, those in developing

markets Brazil, China, India and South Africa were far more optimistic than their peers in developed markets. While in India, 60 per cent said they think they have the skills needed for their careers, just a quarter were similarly optimistic in France, the poll found. The survey also showed that the level of confidence which young people had in their technical skills correlated with their beliefs in their future career prospects. The survey was conducted by Londonbased ICM Unlimited. It was released before the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland, which is focused on what it describes as the "Fourth Industrial Revolution", the broad social and economic shifts taking place due to disruptive digital technologies.

Researchers find possible ninth planet T

he solar system may host a ninth planet that is about 10 times bigger than Earth and orbiting far beyond Neptune, according to new research. Computer simulations show that the mystery planet, if it exists, would orbit about 20 times farther away from the sun than Earth, said astronomers with the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. So far, the planet has not been observed directly. "It's a pretty substantial chunk of our solar system that's still out there to be found, which is pretty exciting," said astronomer Mike Brown, whose discovery was published in this week's Astronomical Journal. Brown and astronomer Konstantin Batygin, also at Caltech, were initially sceptical that such a large planet would have eluded detection. But they modelled the hypothetical planet's gravitational effects on several known

Scientific progress a disaster: Hawking Scientific progress is almost certain to bring disaster to planet Earth within the next few thousand years, according to top cosmologist Professor Stephen Hawking. He predicts that as new technologies are developed, the number of threats to the human race will increase until some kind of global cataclysm is virtually inevitable. In the time period before humans manage to escape to the stars, they will have to be "very careful", he says.

bodies in the region and found a nearperfect match. The computer model also predicted the location of other objects beyond Neptune, in a region known as the Kuiper Belt, and those were found in archived surveys as well. At that point, "my jaw sort of hit the floor," Brown said in a statement.

Brown's earlier research helped to demote Pluto in 2006 as the solar system's ninth planet after other small, icy bodies were found beyond Neptune. "All those people who are mad that Pluto is no longer a planet can be thrilled to know that there is a real planet out there still to be found," Brown said.

at the BBC Reith Lectures at London's Royal Institution on January 7. His prophesy of doom came when a member of the audience asked him: "Do you think the world will end naturally or will man destroy it first?" The professor, research director at Cambridge University's Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, replied: "We face a number of threats to our survival from nuclear war, catastrophic global warming, and genetically engineered viruses. "The number is likely to increase in the future, with the development of new technologies, and new ways things can go wrong. "Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or 10,000 years.

"By that time, we should have Hawking's warning came during spread out into space, and to a question and answer session other stars, so a disaster on

Earth would not mean the end of the human race. "However, we will not establish self-sustaining colonies in space for at least the next hundred years, so we have to be very careful in this period." Most of the threats the human race faces come from progress in science and technology, he said.

Chinese create air-purifying enamel A Chinese company claims to have created a new building material that breaks down pollutants and can be used to build air-purifying walls. Kaier New Materials has developed an enamel that can carry out photosynthesis, the same chemical reaction through which plants release oxygen, according to China Radio International.

When the enamel comes into contact with pollutants, both react chemically to produce water which can form a thin film on the external surface of buildings covered with that material, also giving the walls a self-cleaning capacity. "The material has been used on the exterior walls of our building for 10 months as a trial and it has decomposed pollutants," Shu added.

The company, which specialises in manufacture of enamels, is While Chinese authorities have already certified the selfwaiting to conduct more tests and has no plans of launching it cleaning capacity of the material after requisite tests, they are in the market yet, CRI says. yet to certify its air-purification capabilities. Air pollutants in Chinese cities contain solid particles with organic matter including sulfides and nitrates. "We have added a highly oxidising and hydrophilic nanometer material into the enamel. The new material will have a photosynthesis-like reaction with organic air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and sulfides," Shu Wenxiao, a researcher with the company said.

"We have no plans to bring the product to market just yet. Domestic testing institutions lack standards for such material, and we are looking for foreign organisations," Shu explained. The company claims every 200 square metres of the new enamel will have an air-purifying effect equal to that of 14 mature poplar trees.

More kids sent to school with tablets

it's easier for kids of that age to manoeuvre as opposed to using a mouse," Telstra Digital Inclusion advisor Shelly Gorr said. "They might be capturing their voices, videoing each other in classes. "They might be doing digital publishing." Students who used devices boosted their long-term opportunities in the digital world, said Ms Gorr, as more jobs require skills in science, technology, engineering and maths. "Seventy-five per cent of the fastest growing occupations are going to require these skills in the future. "Many jobs do require these kinds of skills and increasing children's digital literacy helps them go from being just passive consumers to making and creating content." Ms Gorr said some parents did express concern about how much time their children were spending on mobile technology. Concerns have also been raised about whether educators would be able fashion students' use of the technology to their benefit.

"You could have a brilliant teacher who is able to incorporate the use of tablets into day-to-day learning or could have a very bad teacher using the same devices and not getting a good outcome. "You've got to use those devices to challenge and stimulate children in what they're learning."

Kids spending more time online than TV

T

he amount of time UK children spend online has overtaken that spent watching television for the first time, according to a new report.

Simon Leggett, Childwise research director, said this year's survey showed that "TV viewing has been redefined".

An annual survey by research agency Childwise suggested young people now use the internet for three hours a day on average, compared with just 2.1 hours sitting in front of the television.

He told the BBC: "Growing access to the internet at any time and in any place, and a blurring of television content across channels and devices, brings a landmark change in behaviour this year.

Video-sharing website YouTube, imagesharing sites Instagram and Snapchat and social network Facebook were among the most popular online destinations for children. And half of the more than 2000 five to 16-year-olds who took part in the survey had watched programs on Netflix, ahead of ITV on 47 per cent and BBC One on 46 per cent. The trend may have been aided by a surge in tablet ownership among children, which was up 50 per cent on last year.

"Children are now seeking out the content of their choice.

They still find traditional TV programs engaging but are increasingly watching them online and on-demand or bingewatching box sets."

Molly star "dead broke but happy"

A

ctor Samuel Johnson, who stars as Molly Meldrum in the upcoming mini-series Molly, is "dead broke, but happy". The likeable and knock-about actor said that he has not been cast in any role since he walked off the set of Molly almost a year ago. Most of the past year he has spent working for his charity, Love Your Sister, which raises money for breast cancer research, or performing voice over work.

He says he's auditioned for roles and even tried his hardest to be cast as the host for Network Ten's kid's show The Great Australian Spelling Bee. "I haven't worked since Molly, which is February," Johnson said. "The work I do with Love Your Sister is unpaid. The last time I got a pay cheque for an acting gig was last February for Molly."

Johnson said Stephen Curry's acting career never altered course after he played Australian TV icon Graham Kennedy in the TV movie, The King: The Story of Graham Kennedy. "I'm dead broke but happy," Johnson said. "I don't think Stephen Curry's life changed that much when he played Graham Kennedy. I refuse to buy into the fact, this is going to guarantee me a slab of work." Johnson sat alongside Meldrum late last year to watch the final edit of Molly and said the music guru gave it the thumbs up. "I wouldn't mind the rest of the country agreeing with him," Johnson said. Meldrum this week seriously injured himself after a fall in Thailand. He sustained a dislocated shoulder and four cracked ribs. Meldrum took a nasty fall at his home in 2011 while putting up Christmas decorations. He fractured his skull when he fell three metres down stairs around a spa in the backyard of his Richmond home.

Johnson was recognised for his selfless work with Love Your Sister when he was awarded this week the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to cancer research support organisations and to the performing arts.

Johnson contacted Meldrum's close friend Michael Gudinski to pass on his well-wishes. "I had the same approach as after his first accident. I didn't want to hassle him while he was cook. I told Gudinski to send my love," Johnson said.

The Rush and Secret Life Of Us star says he's not fretting about his current work situation and he's not thinking that he may gain roles on the back of Molly which airs in February on the Seven Network.

"When he gets back I'll visit him privately. I don't want to bother him. "The more cynical types think Gudinski has pulled a swifty, but he is genuinely banged up."

Making a Murderer second season is in the works A

s Steven Avery's case continues to gather pace, so too does our hunger to watch more of Making a Murder, with reports that a second series is set to be recorded. The Netflix series which follows a seemingly dubious murder conviction, is set to reveal "explosive new details" according to The Mirror, as creators reportedly prepare to begin filming season two. Avery, the centre focus of the documentary series is currently facing a life sentence behind bars for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach in 2005. The highly anticipated new season of the hit show, will reportedly unveil startling new evidence behind the case.

Film makers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos have been contacted by a second juror prepared to admit that Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey were framed for the murder, The Mirror reports. The show is gaining more and more traction each day, with Avery's lawyer Kathleen Zellner wasting no time on diminishing the prosecution's case. The lawyer known for overturning wrongful

convictions is working on having Avery's case reheard in the US courts. "Visit w/ Steven Avery at Waupon CC. He is identical to the other 17 innocent men we've cleared. Won't quit until he's out. #MakingAMurderer," Zellner tweeted.

Your Horoscopes ARIES Romance is flourishing. Because you are experiencing a very confident period, it shows and it makes you attractive. It’s a week to enjoy. Don’t underestimate your abilities to transfer something. You are trying to proclaim a complex message. Your determination is paying off now even though that wasn’t so easy in the past. Your unique way of approach will force other to listen to you well. You have set some health goals but you don’t succeed in making them come true. Take small steps. You don’t have to do such drastic things.

LIBRA You don’t want negative feelings but once you research them you will bump into suppressed anger. You are a master in disguising your feelings. Throw it out whatever the consequences of that explosion may be. You have all the reason to move full speed ahead if you want to undertake something. Financial matters will easily flourish so take advantage of the situation. Unprocessed tensions suddenly appear if someone tries to manipulate you. Be as friendly as possible to prevent an unnecessary conflict.

TAURUS Don’t give others the opportunity to make you feel guilty. Do what you have to do as soon as possible and nobody gets the chance to sabotage you. Love is all about making compromises. Use a fresh view to look at everything that gives you pleasure aside from working. Even though you are pretty busy during the week you should clear up some time in the weekend for pleasant activities. Create time to relax in your schedule so you can maintain a healthy balance. Give yourself the chance to be lazy now and then.

SCORPIO The stars are smiling at you and put a positive spin to your week. A powerful and attractive person will challenge you. You are amazed by your reaction to give yourself an attitude. Don’t stubbornly hold on to a fixed plan because unforeseen circumstances will force you to adjust. Flexibility is your weapon to guide changes into the right direction. You might suffer from some stomach issues, which are probably caused by the fact that you worry so much. Be a bit lighter and eat some food that is easy to digest.

GEMINI Your optimism is contagious. Your imagination is running wild. That could create unrealistic expectations and you will feel cheated on in the end. Stay with both feet on the ground. You want all kinds of things but your sense of urgency is disappearing. Crazily enough you will reach your goal faster if you let go of control for a bit instead of making hard efforts. Let it happen. There is no reason to work in such a fanatical way so make time for pleasurable activities. This will benefit your mind and body.

SAGITTARIUS You want respect and compassion from your partner and the people close to you but you receive other signals. That’s not a reason to get worked up. Take a look behind the scenes. A fresh idea could cause a new experience or an exciting adventure. Don’t forget it or let it disappear. Write it down and work on it to turn into something you can actually do. Orientate yourself on products you have never used before. Green tea perhaps? Or something else, which can build your resistance against negative influences from outside.

CANCER Force yourself to face reality even though this makes you feel a bit down. Discovering the truth is better than fearing the unknown. You might receive a pleasant surprise. Your communication isn’t clear even though you think that others understand what you are talking about. Your positive attitude could hinder you in assessing situations. That’s annoying if it starts costing you money. Add this to your grocery list and your menu won’t just be healthy but delicious as well: apples, spinach, grains, grapes, pears and asparagus.

CAPRICORN The stars are creating instability in some situations. You could get pretty irritated if things don’t work out the way you want them to. Giving expression to extreme emotions will only make things worse, but denial won’t help either. If you are looking for a job you will receive some nice opportunities this week. Sometimes you don’t even have to do anything for it and it just comes your way. Open up to all opportunities. You are quite rushed and impatient. That could go wrong if you are not careful. An accident can happen in no time. Count to ten now and then before you do anything.

LEO Is it better when you say what you think? That could be a nasty mistake. You can’t manipulate your loved one’s reaction. Instead of convincing it would be better to accept the difference of insight. A confrontation about a financial issue won’t get you anywhere right now. Wait until the dust has settled before you strive for an acknowledgement of your view. Then you will get where things are going wrong. Regular massages of the head don’t just feel good but they are beneficial for your circulation. Surrender to it and enjoy the effect.

AQUARIUS You can expect an emotional blow if you look to deep into certain matters. You pretend to feel better than you actually do and that could be a way of denying your feelings. Your career gets all the attention but this week it would be good to find the right balance between your family life and your emotions. Divide your attention. You will start to feel a lot better if you don’t get stuck in your mind but let your heart speak spontaneously. Your environment appreciates that as well because then you are no longer pretending. Grant them a view on your weakest spot.

VIRGO You are just telling yourself to hide away because your vulnerability makes you feel nervous. Trust your intuition, protect what is yours and don’t let anything knock you off your feet. It seems that you have to take action to realize a new plan but your plans could be incompatible with other people’s plans. Your chance will be lost if you don’t act now. Don’t let everything you read on Facebook or in the newspaper scare you. Your health is fine if you convince yourself of that fact. Your mind rules your body.

PISCES Things beyond your control are happening. If you show enough confidence by just letting it happen you will be amazed by the consequences. You have the last word even though that seems to be improbable at first. You have the opportunity to get the support of someone and make progress in the direction of your goals. Your impatience could sabotage matters though. You can still make some goals about what you want to reach at the end of 2016 concerning your health and fitness. Write them down, hang them somewhere you can see and reward yourself if you stick to them.

Bruckheimer teases Top Gun sequel M

ovie producer Jerry Bruckheimer has teased fans about the Top Gun sequel, posting a photo of himself with Tom Cruise.

Bruckheimer has been working on Top Gun 2 since 2010, but the project was severely delayed after the movie's director Tony Scott committed suicide in 2012.

One of Cruise's most famous roles is his portrayal of hotshot fighter pilot Maverick in the original 1986 movie, which centres on a group of elite aviators who are all vying The producer noted even to be at the top of their class at the Top Gun Naval Fighter in light of Scott's death, executives behind Top Gun 2 didn't give up on Weapons School. making the film. Top Gun fans will be elated to learn the sequel to the Oscar-winning film is indeed in motion, despite rumours the project may have been shelved because it is taking so long to produce. "Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2," Bruckheimer tweeted on Tuesday. The message was attached to a photo of Bruckheimer standing alongside Cruise while they are both smiling into the camera. In June 2015, Skydance Productions chief executive officer David Ellison confirmed Top Gun 2 was in the works, with Justin Marks writing the screenplay. Cruise is attached to reprise his role as Maverick and Val Kilmer will also return to portray his iconic character Iceman.

"It's just figuring out how to do it, which I think we have a good handle on, and losing Tony slowed us down, but hopefully we can pick up speed again," he told Yahoo! Movies in 2013.

Zayn Malik 'anxious' ahead of new album

Z

ayn Malik says his stomach is full of butterflies as he waits for the release of his first music as a solo artist. The former One Direction star has chosen a very apt name for his new album, for which the first single, Pillowtalk, releases on Friday. Malik told Beats 1 Radio host DJ Zane Lowe that the record will be called Mind of Mine. It's his first work since he left the British boy band nearly a year ago to pursue his own style of music. There is no set release date for the album, which will feature "about 17-18 songs", he said. Malik, who now wishes to be referred to simply as "Zayn", told Lowe the wait is making him nervous. "It's kind of just like waiting for Christmas when you have that build of butterflies in your stomach, the anxiety sort of feeling," he admitted. Malik told Lowe he wanted to leave the boy band, "from the first year, really". "I never really wanted to be

there in the band, I just gave it a go because it was there at the time." The 23-year-old admitted he never really connected with the band's "direction" of music. "When I realised the direction we were going in - mind the pun - with the music, I instantly realised it wasn't for me, because I realised I couldn't put any input in," he said. "I couldn't give my opinion on this or that because it didn't fit the grain of what we were as a band and what we represented." "That's when it became frustrating for me, that's when I had to be like `I've got to start thinking about myself'." While the band tried to accommodate his musical needs, Malik said the news of his departure was no surprise. "I think the boys kind of new, in terms of the music, that wasn't my cup of tea," the singer admitted. "They were trying to facilitate certain things for me so that I could sing certain R&B here and there and that was nice, but obliviously I think they always knew." "They obviously didn't want me to leave, but they couldn't talk me out of it. "At that point I had already made my mind up, so I just left." The singer has promised a more R&B sound from his album working with Producer Malay, most widely known for his work with Frank Ocean.

Amber Rose to Kanye West: 'Don't talk about my kid'

A

mber Rose has blasted her ex-boyfriend Kanye West for mentioning her son during his Twitter feud with Wiz Khalifa.

West ignited a war of words with the Black and Yellow hitmaker on Wednesday after misinterpreting Khalifa's reference to marijuana as a swipe at his wife Kim Kardashian. "Hit this kk and become yourself," Khalifa tweeted.

Mental As Anything with Jon Stevens R

ock In The Park returns for 2016 with Jon Stevens and Mental As Anything plus some pretty cool guests performing in the picturesque setting of Lardner Park at Warragul on Saturday February 20.

Launching last year, Rock In The Park presents a fantastic, family picnic themed event with great music, a fine selection of food and drinks, providing all the ingredients for a magical afternoon this Summer. This year, a host of guest artists including Nick Barker, Scott Kingman and Paul Woseen from The Screaming Jets, Mental As Anything and John Stevens and his band complete a stellar line-up. For over 30 years, Jon Stevens has had a remarkable career as a singer, songwriter and performer. His achievements have included ARIA chart-topping success as the frontman of legendary Australian band, Noiseworks, joining INXS as the “seventh member”, and maintaining a successful solo career as one of the country’s foremost touring artists. Jon’s musical journey started off with success in his birthplace New Zealand, where he released his number one debut album. Once on Australian shores he wasted no time forming Noiseworks. Over the next five years the band produced three Top 10 singles and four Top 10 albums. Following the success of Noiseworks, Stevens decided to pursue opportunities on a different kind of stage - starring as Judas in the 1992 highly acclaimed Australian Musical Production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar. 2013 again saw Stevens treading the boards in the musical production, this time in the role of Pontius Pilot, which was met with critical acclaim. In 2000, a studio collaboration saw Stevens become part of rock band INXS as guest vocalist and he embarked on a global tour with them. Shortly after, he was officially announced as the “seventh member” of INXS.

Mental As Anything

Returning to his solo career, Stevens then forged ahead with new material in the studio, unleashing a further two solo albums - “Changing Times” and then “Testify” in 2011. 2012 saw he and guitarist David Lowy form The Dead Daisies, touring across the USA and New Zealand during 2013 and 14. 2015 has seen Stevens return to his solo career, recording, producing and mixing his latest studio offering, “Woman” released in September. Along with Jon Stevens at Rock In The Park comes confirmation of a popular urban myth concerns a group of art students including Greedy Smith and Martin Plaza who passed themselves off as a band in order to con the local publican into giving them a gig in exchange for free beer. The deception worked better than intended, and the group came to be known as Mental as Anything. Nearly two decades later, they are still irritating the public with their highly listenable, idiosyncratic brand of garage pop. Mental As Anything are currently touring Australia with their hits “Live it Up”, “The Nips are getting bigger”, “You’re So Strong”, “Too Many Times”, “If You Leave Me Can I Come Too”, “Rock & Roll music”, “Come Around”, “Lets Go to Paradise”, “Berserk Warriors”, “Spirit Got Lost”, “Romeo & Juliet”, “Mr Natural”, “The World Seems Difficult”. Rock In The Park returns to Lardner Park in Warragul on Saturday February 20 from 2pm. Tickets for this unique family event are on sale now along with complete event details available at www.lardnerpark.com.au

SAY “HELLO” TO THE ALL-NEW KIA SPORTAGE

K

ia Sportage _ the car that underscored Kia’s lift-off into the stratosphere of automotive good looks and announced the company as a style leader _ will highlight its fourth generation with quality, functionality and a host of advanced new technology features when it goes on sale late in January. Since its arrival in Australia in 2010, the superseded Sportage has been widely lauded as the car that brought desirability to the compact SUV segment. With the arrival of the all-new model the bar has been lifted again. “The new generation Sportage will continue the story started some five years ago, this time with even more style, more technology … and more quality,” Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer, Damien Meredith, said. “Like the Carnival, Sorento and Optima launched in the last year, one of the standout advances is in the styling and quality of the interior. The cabin of the new Sportage stands in nobody’s shadow.” For the Australian market the new Sportage will be available in three trim levels _ Si, SLi and Platinum _ with a choice of three engines, a 2.0-litre MPI (114kW and 192 Nm) for Si and SLi, a 2.4-litre GDI (135kW and 237Nm) in Platinum only and a 2.0-litre diesel (136kW and 400Nm) in all grades. All models will feature a six-speed automatic gearbox driving the front wheels only in the 2.0-litre petrol Si and SLi models and linked to Kia’s proven on-demand AWD system in all diesel models (Si, SLi and Platinum) and the 2.4-litre GDI petrol in the Platinum range. For the first time on a Kia in Australia the new Sportage Platinum will feature the Smart Parking Assist System (SPAS) which will assist drivers into parallel or 90-degree parking

spaces by measuring the available space, controlling steering and offering input instructions on the LCD display. Pricing starts at $28,990 for the 2.0-litre petrol Si and tops out at $45,990 for the Platinum diesel. Having made its global debut at last September’s Frankfurt International Motor Show, the all-new Sportage builds comprehensively on the success of the outgoing model, offering an innovative and sophisticated package to buyers in an increasingly competitive compact SUV market. The new-look interior features high quality materials and design integrity, as well as great practicality and a range of technologies to improve comfort, convenience, connectivity and safety. A range of new and updated engines and transmissions will result in enhanced efficiency and performance, while KMAu’s localized ride and handling program has made the most of the improved refinement of the Sportage. “The new Sportage is an integral part of our sales initiatives and aspirations for 2016 and yet another opportunity for Kia to build on the brand strength and customer experience already leading the way with the benchmark 7-year warranty, 7-year capped price servicing and 7-year roadside assist,” Mr Meredith said. For the first time, the high-end Platinum models _ both petrol and diesel _ will feature the new ‘GT Line’ specification to bring style and visual cues of sporting aspiration to the segment. Designed and engineered to appeal to those looking for a sportier ambience from their Sportage, the GT Line specification delivers all the versatility of the Sportage while adding greater visual and dynamic appeal.

FISHINGREPORT WHAT AN INTERESTING SUMMER!

T

he fishing has been good over the last fortnight, when the wind and RAIN allow. Australia day saw an array of the usual species for this time of the year coming in especially, Gummies and whiting of various sizes with some whiting around the 1 KG mark and some hefty bags limits. With the Western Port Whiting Challenge only a month away held Saturday 5th and Sunday the 6th of March it really is a great challenge to push you and your crew / Family to a new skill level by fishing harder and longer than normal. This Comp is now for Amateur anglers “only” so pick up an entry form from one of the sponsors or www. wpac.com.au.

Sharks, There have been some small Mako’s but the Blues seem to be out numbering the ones we want, however the best times are still ahead so keep up the burley. Port Phillip Bay, The whiting are going well around North Road Brighton and RAAF base at Point Cook with Pinkies on all the inner reefs from Williamstown to Rickards Point. There have been some guys chasing Snapper from Mornington down.

Kings, The guys chasing king are having some success and the numbers seem to be on the increase so fingers crossed this goes on with

A thrilling finish? A controversial mishap?

The sport's biggest show has produced all of the above. Created as a deciding crown between the National Football League and American Football League champions, in 1967, Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers captured the first two played, earning a place in lore and the famous coach's name on the trophy. But it was Namath, the New York Jets quarterback with movie star bravado and good looks, who catapulted the event forward in 1969 when he guaranteed his underdog side would beat the Baltimore Colts, and then delivered a 16-7 triumph. The image of Namath running off the field with one finger raised endures, and the magic of the Super Bowl only heightened

Patriots, who entered Super Bowl XLII at 18-0 before the New York Giants upended them 17-14. Giants wide receiver Tyree pinned a catch to his helmet on the deciding drive to seal the fate. But every ending has not been a fairytale one.

Buffalo Bills kicker Scott Norwood's name was made infamous when he missed a 47-yard field goal that gave the New York Giants a 20-19 triumph in Super Bowl XXV, one of the greatest ever played. San Francisco QB Joe Montana lived up to his "Joe Cool" nickname in 1989 when he led a final-minute game-winning drive to lift the 49ers past Cincinnati 20-16. Montana, who is tied with Tom Brady and

Terry Bradshaw with a record four Super Bowl wins at QB, was said to be so calm during the last drive that he pointed out to his teammates the late actor John Candy in the stands. Not all of the lasting Super Bowl performances have been produced by players, either. Late singer Whitney Houston delivered a tear-jerking national anthem in 1991 while US troops were at war in the Persian Gulf. Singer Janet Jackson had a 'wardrobe malfunction' too revealing for television audiences in 2004, and the annual Super Bowl television ads have become a gamesmanship of shock and creativity. "Kind of as a fan, just sitting home and watching (the Super Bowl), obviously it's always a bittersweet type of thing," said Panthers tight end Greg Olsen. "As much as you enjoy the Super Bowl, when you're a current player and you're not in it, you always have that 'I wish it was us' mentality." Now Olsen, along with the Panthers and Broncos, have their chance to add a performance to the Super Bowl's endless lore.

hotel room and it paid off as he rolled in the clutch par putt on 16, just as he had done on the 13th and 14th, to retain his lead.

Song returned the next to par the last three holes of his final round for a oneunder 70 and 12-under total of 272, claiming the first title of his career after a number of second place finishes on the Japan, Korean and OneAsia Tours.

Spieth headed to the practice range in the hope of a playoff after sinking his birdie, which he was seen studying 20 minutes before play resumed, but Song ensured there would be no sudden death shootout with solid pars on the last two holes.

Double major winner Spieth, who also returned to the Sentosa Golf Club early to sink a five-foot birdie putt on the 18th, his only shot of the day, finished with a five-under 66.

The giddy 24-year-old South Korean waited nervously for 20 minutes after his news conference to meet with his idol Spieth, grabbing a selfie before trying again to call his mother, who was not answering.

The duo were among 12 players forced to return on Monday after more stormy weather in the Southeast Asian city state brought an early end to Sunday's play at the Japan Golf Tour and Asian Tour season-opening event.

Spieth joked he had completed the first perfect round of his career after his one putt effort, but was left to wonder what might have been.

outh Korean Song Young-han held his nerve to edge his role model, world No.1 Jordan Spieth, by a shot to win the Singapore Open in a weather-delayed Monday finish.

The third weather disruption of the week came at a pivotal point in the round with Song over a 10-foot putt on the 16th to stay at 12-under while Spieth was looking at a short putt on 18 to get to 11-under. "One night felt like one week, the whole night I thought about 16th green. I hated Jordan Spieth last night," Song joked with reporters through a translator. "The line wasn't that bad, but the situation made me very nervous. I left it to the gods." Well, not entirely to the gods. The world No.204 spent Sunday night practising his putting with a friend in his

The 22-year-old Texan never truly hit his best form in Singapore this week and was guilty of missing a number of short putts on the large undulating greens that left him five back of Song after three rounds. "I just made some really poor decisions in the middle two rounds, I was just trying to do too much," Spieth said. "I fought hard in the final round but I was just too far back." Spieth will fly back to the United States and a week off after a hectic recent schedule of tournaments in Hawaii, Abu Dhabi and Singapore before returning to play at the Febraury 11-14 Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
