Come clean on GST, Bowen tells treasurer L

abor is demanding Scott Morrison come clean on his GST intentions after the treasurer flagged the prospect of "pretty significant" tax changes.

15% GST?

Mr Morrison wouldn't specifically back a proposal to hike the GST to 15 per cent during around of media appearances on Monday. But he praised Nationals backbencher David Gillespie for asking the Parliamentary Budget Office to cost a New Zealand-style model that also broadens the GST to more goods and services than now. "This is a good contribution," the treasurer said, while stressing it wasn't government or Nationals policy. The PBO found it would generate an extra $65.6 billion for a total take of more than $130 billion in 2017-18. Tax Institute president Stephen Healey says the GST rate and exemptions should be reviewed to determine their "ongoing appropriateness". Mr Morrison reiterated everything was on the table during what he labelled a "discovery phase" with the states and territories. South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill backed a potential GST hike provided there was an increase in the overall tax take and compensation for low-income earners. "Nobody wants to say it out loud because it's unpopular to say it," the state Labor leader said. "But we're not raising enough money to actually meet the needs that the community are putting on us. It's a simple truth. Labor is opposed to any change to the GST. Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen said the general cost of living had risen 30 per cent since 2005 and the Turnbull government wanted to make life more expensive still. "If they are going to do that, be up-front with the Australian people," Mr Bowen

"...be up-front with the Australian people" told reporters in Sydney.

as personal incomes taxes.

But Mr Morrison criticised Labor for locking itself out of a very important and mature discussion, arguing you don't go raising taxes because you can't control your expenditure.

"To suggest ... that it is not going to harm anyone is quite frankly mythical," she said.

Instead, the tax system should encourage growth in the economy which would result in higher government receipts. "You don't deal with it by slugging people harder with taxes, which is what the opposition wants to do," Mr Morrison said. But Labor frontbencher Amanda Rishworth said the government was suggesting a higher GST would help fund hospitals and schools, cut state taxes as well

Greens treasury spokesman Adam Bandt said his party would "fight tooth and nail" to stop any GST increase.

He said he would speak to restaurants and cultural bodies to talk about staying open later. Trains will run every hour from Flinders St on almost all routes on Friday and Saturday nights, while buses will leave the CBD every 30 minutes. Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said 10 bus routes would leave the CBD, while 11 routes would leave suburban stations. man armed with a meat cleaver has been arrested after holding police at bay for two hours at a Melbourne CBD restaurant.

The shirtless man walked out of the second floor La Trobe Street restaurant just after 3pm on Tuesday holding his bloodied hands in the air as heavily armed police rushed to him.

The man charged at officers with a meat cleaver when they arrived and was sprayed with pepper spray before barricading himself inside. Investigators probe Russian plane crash I

nternational investigators have begun probing why a Russian airliner carrying 224 people crashed in a mountainous area of Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, killing everyone on board.

"You would need hardto-use missiles..."

As Russia on Sunday started a day of mourning for the victims, Cairo and Moscow both rejected the claim from a militant group affiliated with Islamic State jihadists that it downed the Airbus flown by the Kogalymavia airline, operating under the name Metrojet. Egyptian Prime Minister Sharif Ismail said experts had confirmed that the militants could not down a plane at the 30,000 feet altitude the Airbus 321 was flying, while Russian Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov said the claim "cannot be considered accurate". The plane's black box data recorders have been recovered and sent for analysis, and late Saturday Sokolov and Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov arrived in Cairo with a team of experts to help with an Egyptian-led investigation. Two air accident investigators from France - Airbus's home country - are also to travel to Egypt along with six experts from the aerospace giant to help with the probe. Germany's Lufthansa, Emirates and Air France all said they would halt flights over Sinai until the reasons behind the crash

In March, the US Federal Aviation Administration had advised US civil aircraft to avoid flight operations in restive Sinai Province below 26,000 feet.

rejected the idea they would have either the equipment or expertise to hit the charter flight, which an Egyptian official said was flying at some 30,000 feet when communication was lost.

The plane, carrying 214 Russian and three Ukrainian passengers and seven crew, lost contact with air traffic control 23 minutes after taking off from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, bound for Saint Petersburg.

To reach a plane at that altitude "you would need hard-to-use missiles, so it seems unlikely", added Jean-Paul Troadec, former director of France's BEA aviation investigation agency.

Nation richer for migrants, Vic rally told P

ast generations of Australians welcomed refugees with open arms and the nation is richer for it, a pro-asylum seeker rally in Melbourne has heard. Several hundred people braved the rain for the Walk Together march through the city's CBD and, notably, past the Greek and Little Chinatown food districts.

"We didn't always keep people in legal limbo for many years after fleeing war and fleeing death," federal Greens MP Adam Bandt told the crowd after it gathered at Federation Square. "When we treat boat people like people, we are all better off." Mr Bandt said Australia needed to remember the compassion of the past, including under Liberal prime minister Malcolm Fraser, when the nation extended open arms to refugees and "not a closed fist".

"When we treat boat people like people, we are all better off."

Federal Labor MP Andrew Giles said there were almost 60 million displaced people in the world and Australia had to "face up to our responsibilities as a rich and free nation".

The marchers carried signs that read "Common people, common dreams" and "The politics of asylum (seekers) haven't done much for Australia, haven't done much "We are all people we are all equal". Flight ban over Will and Kate's house F

light restrictions over the country home of Prince William and his wife Kate have come into effect, with authorities citing security considerations. Anmer Hall in Norfolk, eastern England, is where the royal couple spend most of their time with their children Prince George, two, and six-month-old Princess Charlotte. From Sunday, most aircraft will be banned from flying over the ten-bedroom mansion at an

altitude of under 600 metres. There are a few exceptions to the rule including the helicopter of Queen Elizabeth II, who has a house at nearby Sandringham, and air ambulances such as those flown by Prince William in his job. In August, William and Kate wrote to the media warning that paparazzi attempts to photograph Prince George were becoming increasingly "alarming". "In view of the need for security for the members of the royal family staying at or visiting Anmer Hall and at the request of the security services, the secretary of state (for transport) considers that flying should be restricted in the vicinity," the official order enforcing the move said.

Beetroot 'bomb scare' at Melbourne Airport T

here are a few red faces at Melbourne Airport after a leaking beetroot tin was mistaken for a bomb.

The shipment of beetroot arrived at Melbourne Airport with suspicious looking electrodes attached and reddish purple fluid leaking out.

The airport called in a Hazmat team to investigate but it turns out the electrodes are used to monitor the temperature of the beetroot - not part of a bomb.

The delivery was scanned and no threat was identified, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said.

Buggy driver jailed for daughter's death A Victorian father who was too eager to take proper safety precautions with his new all-terrain vehicle will spend three years and nine months in prison for killing his daughter. Ricky Stephens, of Yarra Glen, had driven his new ATV buggy little more than a kilometre when it flipped on September 6, 2013, throwing nine-year-old Sophie Rose Stephens from the vehicle and killing her. His fiancee's son, Cameron Humphrey, who had been seated in the passenger seat with Sophie between his legs, was also injured. Stephens told police he had just let his guard down, and had been "too f***ing eager, like the kids, to have a go" in his new buggy. The buggy came with numerous warnings, and the salesman who sold it to Stephens the day of the accident urged him to read the manual, watch the safety DVD, and said repeatedly it was not a toy. The buggy had a large sticker on it that warned not to exceed the seating capacity of one passenger. Stephens had told the salesman he was going to "tear up the paddocks", and took the vehicle straight out as soon as he got it home. He was coming off a mound when he accelerated in an attempt to do a burn-out.

The buggy tilted to the right and Sophie was thrown from the open roll-cage onto the grass. The vehicle continued to tip and came to rest partially on her body. Stephens screamed for his fiancee, who performed CPR until paramedics arrived. But after attempting to revive her, they pronounced Sophie dead. Police who arrived on the scene said Stephens was clearly distressed, saying "What have I done, what have I done?" Stephens later told police the kids were laughing and "just having a wow of a time" before the crash. In sentencing Stephens on Friday, Victorian County Court Judge Richard Maidment acknowledged the distress and grief Stephens had suffered as a result of his daughter's death. But he said it was important to denounce the type of dangerous driving that Stephens admitted to. "This was not a case of bad luck," Judge Maidment said "This is a case where the injury to Cameron and the death of your daughter was brought about by your actions." Stephens sat red-eyed with his head

"What have I done, what have I done?" down throughout the hearing in a packed courtroom. He has derived some comfort from speaking to a spiritual reader he believes has helped him communicate with his dead daughter, Judge Maidment said.

"YouTube Red marks an evolution in our desire to give fans more choice and features that they love and a much better experience," Robert Kyncl, YouTube's chief business officer, told a launch event in Los Angeles that was broadcast to its New York office. The nail-biting final stages through the city streets felt "like a thriller movie"

Dutch team clinches close solar car race D

utch solar car team Nuon Solar have taken out the 2015 World Solar Challenge in style, clinching a tight victory under a beating sun in Adelaide's CBD. The team revelled in their second challenge win in a row, popping champagne corks and chanting arm-in-arm around their high-tech racer at the finish line in Victoria Square. Nuon narrowly beat fellow Dutch crew Solar Team Twente, who were only minutes behind in the 3000-kilometre journey through the desert from Darwin to Adelaide. "The drive was intense - the margins have never been closer," Nuon driver Tim Van Leeuwen said after the race on Thursday. Van Leeuwen was drenched in sweat as he stepped out of the cramped cabin of the sleek, silent car. He said the mercury reached 50C at times in the driver's seat.

"There's no windows and there's no airconditioner - so we take plenty of water in with us." Van Leeuwen was one of three team drivers who rotated every three hours. He said the high-speed event illustrated the potential of using solar power in transportation. "We've just driven right across the Australian outback at an average of 90km/h," he said. "It's incredibly exciting." Nuon meteorology specialist Rune Van Der Meijden said 16 students from Delft University of Technology worked full-time for 18 months on the car, which can hit speeds of up to 150km/h. He said the nail-biting final stages through the city streets felt "like a thriller movie". "The competition's getting better and better, as we've seen today," Van Der Meijden said.

Revenge sweet for scientist hit by burglar

W

hen a burglar decided to break into the home of a CSIRO scientist, he did a grave disservice to criminals everywhere. Materials scientist Dr Kang Liang is savouring the sweet taste of revenge after going on to develop a new technique to better capture fingerprints at crime scenes. Dr Liang was inspired to help police after watching officers use traditional fingerprint powder to dust his home in the hope of finding the culprit's sticky paw marks on a window ledge or doorway. He later found that by adding a drop of liquid containing crystals to surfaces, investigators using a UV light are able to see invisible fingerprints "glow" in just 30 seconds. The crystals rapidly bind to fingerprint residue, creating an ultrathin coating that's

an exact replica of the print. The contrast the glow creates allows for higher resolution images to be taken on scene, and then run through police data bases in real time. "When my house was broken into, and knowing that dusting has been around for a long time, I was inspired to see how new innovative materials could be applied to create even better results," Dr Liang said. "As far as we know, it's the first time that these extremely porous metal organic framework (MOF) crystals have been researched for forensics." The CSIRO is now looking to partner with police forces around the country, after Dr Liang's research was published in the Advanced Materials.

Twenty-nine high-tech vehicles from 17 countries have been racing in the challenge since Sunday, powered only by the sun. Three Australian teams competed, including Clenergy Team Arrow, and teams from Western Sydney University and the University of Adelaide. Adelaide Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood said it was a joy to have the race roll into the South Australian capital. "To have the winners here in Adelaide, with all this madness in the background - this is brilliant," he said. "Congratulations to the Dutch."

SPACE EXPLORATION

Ph: 1300 BIG NEWS "Can an icy ocean world host the ingredients for life?"

Cassini spacecraft to fly past Saturn moon A

spacecraft will be sent plunging deep through a fountain of icy spray erupting from an extraterrestrial ocean that could harbour life. The historic fly-by will mark the most exciting attempt yet to unlock the hidden secrets of Saturn's water-world moon Enceladus. Scientists confirmed last month that the small satellite - which at 310 miles across is a seventh of the size of Earth's moon - has a global ocean covered by an icy shell. The Cassini probe will shoot through the plume above the moon's south polar region at an altitude of 30 miles. During the approach, instruments on board the craft will sample the spray and analyse the cocktail of chemicals within it. Higher plume encounters have been made before but the low sweep will allow Cassini to access heavier molecules including organics. Dr Curt Niebur, Cassini program scientist at the American space agency Nasa's

headquarters in Washington DC, said: "This incredible plunge through the Enceladus plume is an amazing opportunity for NASA and its international partners on the Cassini mission to ask, 'can an icy ocean world host the ingredients for life?'" The plume is fed by icy geysers which blast 250 kilograms of water vapour, ice grains and volatile chemicals into space at 2188 kilometres per hour and are thought to have a fiery origin deep beneath the moon's surface. They have been compared with hydrothermal vents on Earth - volcanic fissures on the ocean floor where sea water percolating through fractures in the bedrock is heated to high temperatures. The complex chemistry around hydrothermal vents gives rise to oases of teeming life in some of the deepest, coldest and darkest corners of the Earth's oceans. One of Cassini's chief missions is to find evidence of hydrothermal activity on Enceladus.

Dr Hunter Waite, from Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas - who is team leader for the craft's neutral mass spectrometer instrument (INMS), said: "Confirmation of molecular hydrogen in the plume would be an independent line of evidence that hydrothermal activity is taking place in the Enceladus ocean, on the seafloor. "The amount of hydrogen would reveal how much hydrothermal activity is going on." The plume was first spotted by Cassini in 2005, a year after it arrived in the Saturnian system. Around 100 geysers erupting from surface features known as "tiger stripes" were identified as its source. The four 1.2-mile wide aligned cracks are believed to be sites of heightened volcanic activity on Enceladus.

Alicia Keys, Your Horoscopes Ethan Hawke run NYC marathon

ARIES You and your partner are on the same wavelength. You feel and think the same way and that means progress. This is a week to find harmony and to surrender to the soothing sensation this brings. Your focus on financial issues could limit your progress.

Not only can they sing and act, but some American celebrities can also run 42km.

Alicia Keys, Ethan Hawke and Katrina K Bowden all donned their active wear and ran the New York City Marathon on Sunday. New York singer-songwriter Keys ran to raise money for the Keep A Child Alive charity. She's been training and clean eating in the lead up to the big event. "Today is the BIG day! I'm so excited " Keys said on Instagram. Filmmaker Spike Lee was this year's grand marshal, the first New Yorker to do so. He shared a photo of himself and Keys from race day. "Alicia Keys Runs Her 1st New York City Marathon. Run Sista Run," Lee said on Instagram. Actor Hawke was also spotted in the crowd. Instagram user Alice Hair posted a pic of the 44-year-old smiling as he ran through the streets. Bowden, who plays Cerie on comedy show 30 Rock, ran the marathon for the second year in a row. "Ready to go! Here's what I'm wear and my number so you can spot me on the course and track me if you so please," Bowden wrote on her Instagram page. "Look out for me on the course early and give me a high five as I run past!" she said in another post.

Bowie to release new album Blackstar British musician David Bowie will release a new album titled Blackstar on his 69th birthday and the single of the same name is due out next month. Blackstar will be launched on January 8 next year and the single is expected on November 20, a message posted on Bowie's website said on Monday. The new album follows 2013's The Next Day, one of more than 20 albums Bowie has released over a career spanning more than four decades. A pioneer of glam rock, Bowie has long pursued interests in art and theatre and, at age 68, has recently announced a series of new projects. Last month Bowie revealed he had written a song for an upcoming French-British crime series, in the rock icon's first foray into television music in two decades. He also penned the music for Lazarus, a play that premieres in New York in November that is inspired by the science fiction novel The Man Who Fell to Earth.

TAURUS You don’t always have to live up to other people’s expectations. Rely on your grace and your appearance. The one you want to convince with it will notice that. To spend money or not? Postponing an expense for a moment can solve that dilemma.

GEMINI Could this be your lucky week? Things look favourable especially when love is involved. The weekend promises to become cosy. Cupid is shooting his arrows and they will reach your heart as well. At work you need to promote yourself. Let people know you are around. CANCER Your relationship might experience some obstacles at the moment. Don’t worry (s)he will come to his/her senses again and the passion will return. If you need to make a financial decision you don’t have to rationally think about it but you just need to follow your gut feeling. LEO You have to get rid of that feeling of insecurity. Say what is on your mind. That shouldn’t be hard because you usually carry your heart on your sleeve. Your libido is making overtime. That isn’t the problem. Don’t let what others think of your spending pattern influence you. VIRGO You finally find the courage to say what you feel for someone and that’ll be a real relief. It works out well and it will make you feel safer. Don’t think that you’re going to be turned down. Exactly the opposite.

LIBRA You receive a gift that will make you quiet. You will notice that you mean more to someone than you thought. You can make your wishes come true when romance and lust is involved.

SCORPIO The idea that you aren’t good enough for someone is completely wrong. This involves the image you have of yourself and you should have a bit more confidence. You are worth a lot more than you think in your moments of weakness.

SAGITTARIUS Painful confrontations can be prevented by not letting your emotions carry you away. Everything will work out just fine if you stay calm. Control your curiosity because not everything you will hear will be pleasant. CAPRICORN That dark cloud will disappear if you don’t let others intimidate you and you stand up for your wishes. It’s not as bad as you think. Take some distance to be able to make a sharp analysis of what is going on. Make an investment in your work this week. AQUARIUS Are you having doubts about a love relationship? You don’t immediately have to force a decision. Take your time to think. It will help if you confide your thoughts to paper and if you read them again later on. PISCES Something is nagging in the back of your mind. The best advice is to listen to your intuition in silence. You might have something to discuss with someone. Stay alert when someone tries to seduce you. You don’t need more restlessness in your life.

Witherspoon plotting new Legally Blonde

L

egally Blonde star Reese Witherspoon is hoping to resurrect the romantic comedy franchise with a new film.

The actress first played ditzy blonde-turned-law graduate Elle Woods in the hit 2001 movie and returned for the 2003 sequel, but despite spinoffs including a hit stage musical, Reese has not returned to the character in more than a decade. However, the Oscar winner now feels the time is right for her to star in a third Legally Blonde film as she would like to see her character emulate US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton and aim for the upper reaches of American politics. "I think we're ready to see Elle and see what she's up to lately," the actress tells US TV show Fashionably Late With Rachel Zoe, "A lot of writers over the years have come up with different ideas for it. "I actually think it's kind of great right now because we're talking about women in politics and how important that is to get more women. And I think it'd be kind of a cool thing to have her be a Supreme Court justice or someone who runs for office." The last installment in the franchise, which Reese produced but did not feature in, was Legally Blondes - a straight to TV spin-off which starred British twin actresses Milly and Becky Rosso as Elle's cousins.

Sheeran broke up with girlfriend at BRITs

B

ritish pop star Ed Sheeran was nursing a secret heartbreak at this year's BRIT Awards after splitting from his girlfriend the same night. The singer-songwriter won two of the top prizes at the ceremony in London in February - British Male Solo Artist and MasterCard British Album for X. However, Sheeran's night was marred by sorrow because he was reeling from his break-up with Athina Andrelos, who he had been dating since 2014. To deal with the pain he turned to the booze at the show's afterparty and was later snapped being carried out of the bash by two bodyguards. "My relationship ended that night," he told British newspaper The Sun. "That (the drinking) was a knee-jerk reaction to that. Every artist keeps composed in public. Everyone you think is the most composed might end up being the least composed.

"I'm not saying I'm off the rails or I've been off the rails. But every single one of us puts on a front. There's always something going on behind the scenes," Sheeran confessed. He did not, however, confirm the split news until a month after the BRIT Awards when he made the confession during an Australian radio interview. When quizzed about his love life on Sydney's Kiis 1065, he admitted, "I wasn't single, I was in a relationship for a long time," and when asked if he is now single, he replied, "Yes". He added, "Well that's interesting, that's the first time I've spoke about that."

Duchess Kate stunning at Bond premiere

T

he Duchess of Cambridge outshone even the glamorous Bond girls as she arrived at the world premiere of Spectre.

Her floaty, blue Jenny Packham gown, had a slightly open back with a chiffon cross-over at the front, tapering in a neat V neck.

A beaded band around her waist was the perfect finishing touch on the dress, which she paired with a pair of Jimmy Choo heels. Someone else turning fashion heads was Mexican actress Stephanie Sigman, who wore a billowing Marchesa gown. Actress Naomie Harris opted for an understated but striking orange corset dress by Stella McCartney. Bond girl Monica Bellucci kept it classic in a flowing green velvet gown by designers Ralph & Russo. French actress Lea Seydoux, who joins Bellucci in the Bond girl line-up wore a dazzling metallic sequinned number by Prada. Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid could easily have passed for a Bond girl in her silver gown, with faux fur across her shoulders. Bond star Daniel Craig played it safe in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, while singer Sam Smith opted for a classic white tuxedo jacket. Top Gear host Chris Evans decided to buck convention totally and wore a pair of jeans on the red carpet.

The 40-year-old shared photos of his new tattoos with his 14 million Instagram followers on Thursday. A simple drawing of a stick-figure girl and a love heart by his four-year-old daughter Harper was inked to the British star's right palm. "Apparently Harper is allowed to scribble on daddy," he captioned the picture. His wife Victoria and son Brooklyn also posted the pic. "Harper is a true little artist x x vb," Victoria said on Instagram. "Love my dads new tat," 16-year-old Brooklyn said on the site. US Walking Dead fan kills 'zombie' friend A US man who had been watching the hit TV series The Walking Dead killed a friend because he thought the man was "turning into a zombie," police say. Damon Perry, 23, of Prewitt, New Mexico, allegedly used kitchen knives, an electric guitar and a microwave to kill the victim last Thursday. He then went after other tenants in his apartment complex in the small town of Grants, who managed to call police. "I have never seen or heard anything like this," Grants

Police Department Detective Moses Marquez told AFP. "The scene was pretty gruesome and his confession was bizarre," he added. "He attributes this murder to him drinking way too much and binge watching 'The Walking Dead'." The wildly popular horror TV drama is based on a comic book series and is set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies. Marquez said Perry told investigators that he sprang into action when his friend "began to change into a zombie" and attempted to bite him. He said an initial investigation found that Perry, a father of two, had no history of mental illness. He has been charged with murder and is being held on an $US800,000 ($A1.10 million) cash bond.

Meet Trigger

I’m the type of guy who will greet you at the door with a big slobbery kiss. I just love human company and can’t wait to find a buddy who will take me for walks, pull on the other end of the tug-of-war rope, and take me for drives in the car (I like to stick my head out the window!) Because I just adore humans, I’m looking for a home with someone who is around a lot. I am pretty bouncy and excitable, so a home with adults would be perfect for me. I’m really the happiest dog you will ever meet! RSPCA NO. 825284

INERVIEW: HOODOO GURUS P

EARL spoke to Hoodoo Gurus frontman Dave Faulkner about the journey and longevity of the Gurus. PEARL: It’s been 33 years since Hoodoo Gurus released their first single. Did you ever think you’d be enjoying such success and still touring after all this time? FAULKNER: No we really were working from record to record and before you know it years later we’re still doing it. There’s been a lot of luck and a lot of hard work along the way. PEARL: The Hoodoo Gurus had a break for four years before reforming. What was the turning point for getting back together? FAULKNER: When we played at Homebake in 2001, it was four years after we broke up and that was the gig that led to us reforming. When we played together again after four years apart it was amazing to witness the energy, it was the same spirit and connection and that was a real eye opener for me. PEARL: What can fans look forward to about your show? FAULKNER: Mostly a pretty high rolling night of rock and roll fun! I’m pretty excited! We’re pretty much

known for our live shows, we have quite a few well known songs to draw from that we’ll play. PEARL: Are you working on any new projects with the Hoodoo Gurus or by yourself at the moment? FAULKNER: I’ve got a few side projects I’ve been working on- a bit of electronica fun, I’ve dabbled with that all through my career but I’m not known for it. I’m also working on some theatre stuff and last but not least a new Hoodoo Gurus album for next year. I haven’t started serious work on it yet but it’s definitely in my sights. I really want to apply myself to get some songs organised, get into rehearsals and demos and start the whole process again. PEARL: How do the Hoodoo Gurus make music together? How does the creative process work? FAULKNER: As a writer you’re always solo, you write the songs that mean something to you and express what you think. Then at the rehearsals with the rest of the band you keep adding to it, giving it character. It’s more about the songs that have come to life and feel natural and real. A song can be a great song but just not work for those particular musicians. You

never know until you’ve done it whether it’s going to work or not. Sometimes you get amazed by the results because it becomes twice as exciting as it once was- it’s first rate chemistry when it happens. PEARL: You’ve penned some of the Hoodoo Gurus’ biggest hits such as What’s My Scene that have become Australian rock and roll anthems, what inspires you as a songwriter? FAULKNER: Most songwriters start with the music, a lyric or an idea for a story we want to tell. Then you try to figure out how to capture the feeling of that music or topic you want to get off your chest. As far as the theme that you write about you take it from your daily life, observations in society or the world at large. All of us, musician or not we think about things we want to tell people about- our opinions, our feelings, things we hope for or fear. Music to me is having a different format to express how I feel say compared to somebody else writing a letter to the editor. PEARL: You began songwriting at an early age. As a child what drew you to music and writing? Where did your ideas come from? FAULKNER: As a kid my first song was about the family dog, I call that

BIG GUIDE 29

my first love song (laughs). Music was just something I really took to; I was really attracted to it. I was a passionate player of piano and later on guitar. I didn’t even know I was writing songs in the beginning, I was just singing words because it made me feel good. PEARL: How did you get into electronic music? FAULKNER: Music is music to me. I like opera, I like reggae, I like everything really and as a musician I can find merit in all musical styles. In a lot of ways it’s really about communicating using this beautiful melody that is beyond the lyric that changes from one genre to another. Electronic music is just pop music with different instruments really. Hopefully the electronica stuff will come out next year. It’ll be pretty quiet it’s just a bit of fun but hopefully people enjoy it. The Gurus are truly known for their incredible live shows so make sure you get down to Chelsea Heights Hotel on Friday November 27 to see the magic and chemistry Faulkner describes in person. Doors open at 8pm and tickets are available from the venue or Moshtix. Visit chelseaheightshotel. com.au for more details. JESSICA MILLS

BLUES & BREWS WITH

BO

LIVE MUSIC

FRIDAY, SATURDAY & SUNDAY

Open for Dinner Wednesday through Sunday Over 20 Parma varieties on offer!

H

ailing from Arkansas USA with his own combination of Blues, Country and Rock, Bo Jenkins has become an institution on the blues circuit since relocating to Australia. “His mere talent puts him in the same league as Hendrix and Clapton” is a bold statement but these are the words from “RHYTHMS” magazine following his performance at Byron Bay Bluesfest. Bo, a left hander, tunes his guitar upside down and plays with the high “E” string on top – allowing him to play some things that right handed players just cannot do. Renown in earlier days as one of our foremost local Blues men, Bo left our cosy culture behind six years ago opting for the warmer climate of Queensland. In great news for local fans, our legendary lefty is back to stay. Catch Bo Jenkins this Friday November 6 as Sandown Park presents the best rockin’ rollin’ blues each week from 8pm. Sandown Park Hotel, Crn Corrigan & Princes Hwy, Noble Park. For the complete Blues & Brews calendar visit www. sandownpark.com.au or Ph 9546 5755

MORNINGTON WELCOMES MISSY HIGGINS B

eloved Aussie singer/songwriter Missy Higgins has just announced a select series of special concerts in early 2016, including a performance at the iconic Hamer Hall in Melbourne and an exclusive Mornington show for the 2016 Peninsula Picnic. “For the whole of this year I’ve been experiencing life as a first time Mum, and it’s been incredible, but I really can’t wait to get out of the house and play a few gigs,” Missy explains. “I’ve actually been writing a lot of songs lately so I’m looking forward to trying a few of them out at these gigs along with all the others of course. Either way, it’ll be nice to sing something other than ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ for a change!” The first gig to be announced will happen at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo for the iconic Twilight at Taronga concert series on Saturday 13 February. Missy’s show will be a special Valentine’s weekend performance under the stars on the intimate concert lawns at Taronga. From there, Missy will head to her hometown of Melbourne to perform a one-off concert at Hamer Hall, on Wednesday 17 February. This will be somewhat of a homecoming for Missy, marking her first hometown concert with her band since the birth of her beautiful baby boy last January. Tickets for this show will be available for fans via an exclusive presale, starting 9am this Wednesday 28 October on Missy’s official website, with tickets on-sale to the general public on Friday 30 October. Missy will also headline some handpicked late summer festivals around Australia, including a rare ‘unplugged’ set at Riverboats Music in Echuca VIC on Sunday 21 March, and The Peninsula Picnic at the Mornington Racecourse on Sunday 20 April. For tickets and further information on The Peninsula Picnic visit peninsulapicnic.com.au

FISHINGREPORT TEE TREE TIME Its spring carnival in Melbourne and the 2015 Tee Tree snapper fishing contest has been run and won! With 1,523 competitors of which 159 were juniors, competed in a mixed bag of weather conditions over the two days. A total of 1,360 snapper were weighed in and 943 came from our neck of the woods (Western Port). I believe this was a great result for the fish as the average result for each competitor was .893

Results: Winner of the open section heaviest: John Close with a staggering 12.07 kg Runner up open section heaviest: Theo Hatzis with a whopping 10.23 kg Third place open section heaviest: Norman Kemp with another whopping 10.11 kg

Junior Section Results: Heaviest fish: Natalie Bills with a 9.51 kg Runner up: Jai Evens with a 7.34 kg Third place: Skye Lutwitche with a 6.68 kg Congratulations to the winners. Any fisherman would be thrilled to catch any of those fish above the magical 20 pound mark! With brilliant weather and perfect fishing conditions over the last week we have seen an unbelievable range of quality and species coming from all over Western Port, with XXOS sized Mulloway ranging from around 32 kg down. The numbers of the Mulloway being caught over this moon phase has been nothing less than staggering, the fish seem to be coming from the shallows and those willing to put in the time have been rewarded. The snapper fishing has been brilliant with fish from school size up to trophies, coming from all parts and depths of Western Port. The best areas are straight out the front of Hastings, Cowes through to Coronet bay, and Crawfish up to Joes.

Brought to you by:

Besides snapper there has been some great catches of flathead, squid, whiting, trevally and gummies. So whatever species you're targeting, go to one of your favourite spots and you're sure to come home with a feed. Port Phillip Bay is still a little hit and miss with the snapper, sometimes bag limits and other times you can’t turn a reel, the best area seems to be deep off Carrum. The usual suspects like Manny seem to be donging the fish in Port Phillip which are around the 7 kg mark. Squid are plentiful from smaller models around Mornington/ Mount Martha, and some better quality squid coming from Southern Port Phillip Bay. Disastrous fishing trip from a good customer who will remain anonymous, went to go whiting fishing with all rods in the back of a ute, with a runaway esky sliding around doing some serious damage to every rod. Then to top it off dropped their iPhone and smashed the screen making it unusable. After heading off to their mark they soon realised the esky containing the bait was still back at the ramp in the car. Sorry mate for reporting this. Better luck next time!

WINNER Mick and his Mrs. come in and collect a Shimano shirt each courtesy of Amazing Bait and Tackle.

Fans group set for Leeds soccer takeover

L

eeds United's controversial owner Massimo Cellino is set to sell his majority stake in the Championship club to supporters group Leeds Fans Utd.

Cellino is currently appealing against a second Football League ban from owning Leeds and the eccentric Italian is thought to have met with fans on Friday as he looks for a way out of Elland Road. Cellino confirmed on Friday that a deal could be in the offing to Sky Sports News and told BBC Radio Leeds: "One hundred per cent I will sell to the fans, if they want to buy it and look after the club. The fans are the only asset the club has." And a tweet from Leeds Fans Utd said: "Leeds Fans Utd has today reached agreement in principle with Massimo Cellino to purchase a majority stake in Leeds United Football Club." Cellino has sacked five managers since he took charge in 2014 with little improvement in results and has invited further ridicule by banning the colour purple and the number 17 from the club. Many Leeds fans voiced their opposition to Cellino during the club's dismal 2-0 league defeat at home to Blackburn on Thursday. The day before the game, Cellino lodged an appeal against his latest Football League ban. Earlier this month the Italian was banned for a second time for breaching the Football League's owners' and directors' rules following a conviction for tax evasion this year. Cellino, who has three further criminal cases against him still outstanding, had until October 28 to contest the punishment and he submitted the necessary paperwork ahead of Wednesday's deadline.

Marsh to bat No.6: Lehmann A

ustralian coach Darren Lehmann admits they have considered demoting Mitchell Marsh in the batting order for the first Test against New Zealand at the Gabba. However, Lehmann believes Marsh will be given every chance to embrace the Test allrounder role vacated by Shane Watson batting at No.6 in Brisbane. Marsh struggled to juggle the role during the doomed Ashes tour this year. He made just 48 runs at 12 in three Tests but took eight wickets at 18. Overall Marsh has 310 runs at 28.18 from seven Tests. It's a record Lehmann admits has tempted them to elevate new wicketkeeper Peter Nevill - who has a first class batting average of 41.45 - to No.6 at Marsh's expense against the Black Caps. "There is thought about that but at the end of the day we will chat with the captain (Steve Smith)," Lehmann said. "We would love him to make more runs but his bowling has come along. "We've invested some time in him and think that he is a quality player." But Lehmann believed Marsh would be given every chance to blossom at No.6 as he tries to nail down the role once held by retired allrounder Watson. "He's young. Look at all the allrounders over the history of the game, they've probably averaged between 30 and 35," Lehmann said. "We think he's got the ability to average higher than that in Test match cricket.

Sales Positions Available Full-time - Part-time opportunities available for proven sales performers. Call 1300 244 639 or email CV to jobs@bignews.com.au

"And it's getting the experience to play. "International cricket is a tough game. The more opportunities we get to put those younger players under that pressure, the better they'll become." Lehmann admitted Marsh battled with the bat in England but looked forward to what he could produce in conditions more suited to the Western Australian allrounder. "He has to adapt. I suppose the big advantage for him is that these wickets will suit him a bit more than say, the English wickets, where they're slow and seam and swing," he said. "These wickets are truer wickets, better cricket wickets if that makes sense. "I think he'll have success." Lehmann is as convinced as ever of playing an allrounder after Australia did not pick one and were crushed at Trent Bridge this year, sealing England's Ashes series win. "Obviously we didn't do it in one of the Test matches and we admitted that mistake," he said. "I think the big thing for the allrounder spot is that if one of your quicks break down, you need that extra bowler." Australia and New Zealand train at the Gabba for the first time on Monday. The first Test starts on Thursday 5 November.

Sonny Bill Williams given replacement World Cup medal

S

onny Bill Williams will take home a Rugby World Cup winner's medal after all.

All Blacks back Williams was presented with a replacement medal to a standing ovation at the World Rugby awards in London on Sunday, having given his away soon after beating Australia 34-17 in the final. In an act of kindness, Williams gave his medal to a young supporter who was tackled by a security guard when he ran onto the field while the All Blacks completed a victory lap. In total, 33 All Blacks received winning medals. That includes original squad members Tony Woodcock and Wyatt Crockett, who were injured and during the tournament and their prop replacements, Joe Moody and Pauliasi Manu. It is an unexpected reward for uncapped Chiefs loosehead Manu, who officially joined the squad days out from the final when Crockett was ruled out.

Anthony Davis rebounded from a sluggish start to lead the Pelicans with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Jrue Holiday scored 22 points, Ryan Anderson 19 and Toney Douglas 17 for New Orleans.

Wingard pulls out of rules tour

P

ort Adelaide star Chad Wingard is out of the international rules tour because of a knee injury.

Fremantle small forward Hayden Ballantyne will take Wingard's place in the Australian squad for the November 21 Test against Ireland at Dublin's Croke Park. Wingard has bone bruising on his right knee and the Power want him to be ready for pre-season training. Port Adelaide high performance manager Darren Burgess said Wingard had been on light duties so he could go on the trip. "But unfortunately it's still not where we'd like it to be," he said on the club website. "He just needs more rest, so it's not appropriate for him to take part in the international rules." Wingard added what was best longterm had to come first. "It's very disappointing - obviously it would have been a great trip away and a good learning experience for me," he said. "But I'm just going to have to play the cards I'm dealt and hopefully get that opportunity again one day." Wingard has played 89 games for the Power since his 2012 debut and this year made his second AllAustralian team.

Woods' ex-caddy Williams tells all in book T

iger Woods' former caddie Steve Williams has described his anger and frustration at being "hung out to dry" by Woods' management when the golfer's infidelities were revealed in 2009, and says he was sometimes treated as a "slave" on the course. A New Zealand newspaper on Sunday published a chapter of Williams' tell-all book "Out of the Rough" in which the New Zealand-born caddie describes his reaction on learning of Woods' extramarital affairs. Williams writes that he didn't hear from his close friend Woods for four months as the golfer's marriage, career and reputation fell apart. While Williams says he was angry to learn Woods had cheated on his wife Elin Nordegren, "he was still a friend in trouble and I was going to stick by him. "I did that even though people were accusing me of being an enabler, an accomplice, saying I was lying when I stated clearly that I knew nothing about this." Williams says his life became "absolutely miserable" as details of Woods' behaviour emerged and people suspected he had been aware of, or event played some part in Woods' affairs. "People in my local community would front up to me at the shops and call me a liar to my face, and ask 'what are you doing with him?"' Williams wrote. "I repeatedly asked for Tiger's management to release a statement that would clear me of any involvement in this lurid news. "They simply wouldn't do it because there were others in his group who knew exactly what was going on and management felt they couldn't single out one person as innocent. Angry, frustrated and hung out to dry, I was also in limbo about when I would next work." Williams said he didn't consider quitting as Woods' caddie "as I felt incredibly loyal to Tiger - this was the toughest time of his life and I wasn't going to ditch him." "Tiger finally rang me on March 23 (2010). He had already sent me an apologetic email when he was in rehab. It was heartfelt and meaningful; he was open, honest and remorseful and it reinforced my thinking that because I was so straight up and had such strong values, he felt he couldn't tell me what was going on with his affairs." Williams said that before resuming his 13-year association with Woods he met with the golfer and presented a list of demands. "I wanted him to prove to me he could change his behaviour and show me and the game of golf - more respect," he said. Williams said he often felt angry when Woods "would flippantly toss a club in the general direction of the bag, expecting me to go over and pick it up." "I felt uneasy about bending down to pick up his discarded club - it was like I was his slave," he wrote. "The other thing that disgusted me was his habit of spitting at the hole if he missed a putt. Tiger listened to what I had to say, the air was cleared and we got on with it - his goal was to be the best player in history and my goal was to keep working as best I could to help make that happen."

AFL fines 'Pies, Dockers T

he AFL has fined Collingwood and Fremantle after players from the two clubs had failed to provide up-to-date drug testing information. The league has announced that three Magpies players and two from the Dockers had not kept their clubs informed of their movements and contact details. The whereabouts information is a key feature of the standard antidoping code, where players can be tested at any time. Under the AFL's agreement with ASADA, the club and not the player is punished if the whereabouts information is not up to date. Collingwood were fined $7500 and Fremantle received a $5000 penalty. The AFL said no tests were missed because of the incomplete information.

Holm relishes UFC underdog tag U

FC women's bantamweight contender Holly Holm is among the biggest underdogs in world sports going into her Melbourne title fight with superstar Ronda Rousey, but she's been there before. She's living by the mantra that upsets can and do happen.

Although undefeated, former boxer Holm (9-0) is given little chance and fellow American Rousey (13-0) is at prohibitive odds of $1.05 with bookies to retain her title at Etihad Stadium on November 15 while Holm is paying $9.50. "I've been the underdog more than once and that is fine with me," said Holm on Friday. "I think the last time I really felt I was coming in as an underdog was a couple of years ago...I had been knocked out cold by the French (boxing) champion Anne Sophie Mathis and 21 out of her 24 wins were by KO. "I believed I could beat her, and people thought I was crazy for doing that but I avenged my loss. "Those are the victories that are even better, when you go through more in the lead up, and those are the challenges I love." Holm has also got an ace up her sleeve, with input from a man considered by many to be the best UFC fighter alive. Former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who is working on his own

comeback after being suspended by the UFC over a hit and run incident, has been helping Holm prepare for her fight with Rousey.

"We'll shadow box a little bit, we have the same coaches, the same team, and I love hearing his input and he has been very helpful to me in this fight camp," Holm said. "There have been times where he will come to my sessions and give ideas. He has he has got a very, very good mind about fighting and I appreciate his advice." Whether that advice works against Rousey and her strong ground game remains to be seen, but Holm insists she won't be overawed by the occasion or being across the ring from a woman who makes movies, has an Olympic medal and dabbles in the weird world of professional wrestling in her downtime. "Girls get in there and they put her so high on a pedestal, they are nor remembering they are in there for a reason," Holm said. "I am in there for a reason. I believe in myself, she hasn't been beat yet but that doesn't mean it can't happen. "I know that it's big challenge and I'm the underdog, but there have been big upsets in sports for a reason and that's because some people believed in themselves and that's what I am going to do."

Mundine, former Indigenous and Torres Straight Islander Person of the year, originally stipulated unorthodox conditions for a rematch including that Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull "recognise my people on the flag and recognise my people on the anthem." Speaking at the Loyal Foundation Sportsman's lunch, Green said he agreed to drug testing and had no problems with his rival's requests of changing the Australian flag. "I'm in talks with Mal now about getting a high resolution photo of Choc for the flag," he said. "Out of all the stipulations there, only one is an issue ... getting Choc's face on the flag shouldn't be a problem, it should already be there." According to Green, reaching an agreement on weight remains the outstanding obstacle to sealing the deal on a rematch of 2006's bout, which saw Mundine emerge victorious. Green defended his preference to fight at catchweight with his next fight set at 83kg despite his opponent, Konni Konrad, fighting the majority of his career at light heavyweight. "Everyone goes on about my career and having catchweight fights but those people don't obviously know the sport very well," he said. "The best fighters in the world fight at catchweight including Floyd Mayweather." "I've been fighting much bigger guys.. on two occasions I've had them come down a few kilograms but I've given away nearly ten kilograms, so these bananas don't have a clue what they're talking about." Green conceded it gets harder to cut kilos to make weight as he ages. "As I'm getting older it's harder. I do it a long way out now rather than the few weeks leading in."

Glory injuries mount before FFA Cup final SOCCER

P

erth coach Kenny Lowe is in a race to get his big names back for this weekend's FFA Cup final, as he sweats on a number of injury headaches.

It's a worrying sign for the Glory, who are preparing to take on a full-strength Melbourne Victory in the FFA Cup final on Saturday.

A short-handed Glory outfit were beaten 1-0 "We actually prepared during the week with by Western Sydney on Sunday, in their third a game plan and we picked up injuries, and loss of the A-League's first four rounds. also lads coming of the bench were injured as well," Lowe said. The emphatic away defeat was hardly helped by several injuries to the squad some expected and others not so much.

"Oxborrow and Sandor have got impact injuries from a tackle during the week. Castro's got a reaction to a calf just from the hard grounds, same as Guyon Fernandez.

Among those who did not travel east was Spanish marquee Diego Castro (calf), Hungarian international Gyorgy Sandor "Djulbic got through the game. I didn't think (ankle), winger Chris Harold (hamstring) and he'd start but he got through the game, so midfielder Mitch Oxborrow. we'll see how he goes. Chrissy Harold has got a hammy. The absentees forced Lowe to heavily reshuffle his team late in the week, and meant Dino Djulbic and Guyon Fernandez had to play despite carrying their own issues.

would return in time for the showdown at AAMI Park. "You hope, but if not we'll roll with what we've got," he said. "Everyone gets a lovely opportunity to get a game in a Cup final - I think I'll bring my boots." Lowe was unwilling to use the mounting injuries as an excuse for going down to the Wanderers at Pirtek Stadium, praising his young line-up which included 20-year-old Hagi Gligor, who made his first start before being replaced by debutant Alex Grant. "We coped, we were competitive. And we didn't chuck it, which was a big thing."

"So bring your boots and you'll get a game this week (at the FFA Cup final).

Lowe said he was hopeful a few of his stars
