Thousands at refugee candlelight vigils
ens of thousands of people across the country have taken to the streets calling for the government to open its heart to Syrian refugees.

“What we need to do now is open our hearts to the Syrians, to the Afghanis and to all those who are fleeing,” she said. “We can do it.”
Light The Dark candlelight vigils were held in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin and Hobart to welcome refugees to Australia and honour the life of Aylan Kurdi.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said Australia will take in a “significant number” of Syrian refugees within the existing humanitarian intake quota.
The image of Aylan’s tiny body, washed on to a Turkish beach after his family’s failed bid to reach Europe by boat, has become a symbol of the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East. In Melbourne, Asylum Seeker Resource Centre spokeswoman Pamela Curr led a minute’s silence for Aylan as rain fell on the thousands who gathered in the Treasury Gardens, and along Spring Street and Treasury Place. “It’s amazing how dark it is up here, but by golly it’s not dark down there,” Ms Curr told the vigil. “I can see the hearts of Melbourne are warm and alight.”
In Sydney, more than 10,000 people attended the Hyde Park vigil. The head of Grandmothers Against the Detention of Refugee Children, Gaby Judd, said she was horrified by the images of Aylan and helped organise the vigil. “All of us are grandmothers caring for their grandchildren now,” she told AAP. “My grandchildren are one and three, and I look at them and it just seems so unfair that they have the freedom and then the next day I go to Villawood and they (the children there) don’t.” The vigils were organised by a wide range of community groups including Amnesty International, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and Save the Children.

French President Francois Hollande warned that unless the EU makes a greater collective effort, the core European ideal of open borders will be in peril. But Europe looked far from united as Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has taken a hard line, said quotas would be futile so long as refugees kept streaming in. “As long as we can’t defend Europe’s outer borders, it is not worth talking about how many people we can take in,” Orban said in a speech in Budapest. The European Union is readying fresh quotas that would see the two top EU economies take nearly half of the 120,000 refugees to be relocated, under a plan by European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker. Under the proposal, Germany would take over 31,000, France 24,000, and Spain almost 15,000 to relieve the burden on frontline countries Greece, Italy and Hungary, a European source told AFP.
Praise for PM over refugee announcement
The federal government’s decision to permanently resettle 12,000 refugees from the conflict in Syria and Ira has been welcomed by their backers in Australia . “It is an important first step and shows to the world that Australia is willing to support those who are in great need,” said Refugee Council of Australia president Phil Glendenning. Even the Greens gave Prime Minister Tony Abbott the thumbs-up.

Idle bank accounts get four more years
A
ustralians who aren’t actively using their bank accounts now have an extra four years before having to retrieve their cash from the federal government. Legislation to reverse the Labor-imposed three-year deadline for unclaimed money to seven years passed the parliament on Wednesday. This means customers have longer to accrue interest on their accounts without making a deposit or withdrawal before the funds are transferred to government coffers, where they will attract interest at the bond rate and not be subject to fees.

The federal government says Labor’s 2012 legislative change was a cash-grab to improve its balance sheet and caught thousands of Australian families unawares.
When first introducing the policy, Labor argued the shorter time period protected accounts from erosion by bank fees and charges.
Assistant Social Services Minister Mitch Fifield said the “personal legacy” of Opposition Leader Bill Shorten - the minister who introduced the measure at the time - left Australians in financial distress.
The Greens have used this same argument to fight the changes this time around.
“At the time, Mr Shorten pretended he was doing a favour to people who had forgotten their existing savings accounts,” Mr Fifield said.
It was obvious banks wanted to increase their fee income, he said.
“There were thousands of Australians who were horrified that their accounts had been emptied out by Mr Shorten.” Unclaimed money in government accounts increased eight times in 12 months after changes. Conceding some unintended accounts had been effected by the change, Labor backed the reversal of its policy.
Senator Peter Whish-Wilson used his own experience of depositing $500 only to find six years later the balance had dropped to $126.
But Nationals senator John Williams said recounted his experience of dealing with his late mother’s savings account, which would have been closed if the bank had not notified him of its inactivity. The federal government says the changes will require some administration, or “red tape”. The legislation also changes the notification requirements so if a customer advises a bank before the seven years is up, the account can remain active.

Light drinking link Comets seeded life to increased cancer on earth: research P
eople who engage in light or moderate drinking every day are at an increased risk of cancer, a study has found.
Research carried out in the United States and published by the BMJ only found the link in men who had smoked at some point in their lives, and not in those who had never been a smoker. But even in women who had never smoked, the risk of alcoholrelated cancers - mainly breast cancer - increased even after one alcoholic drink a day. An accompanying editorial in the BMJ said people with a family history of cancer, particularly women with a family history of breast cancer, should consider reducing their alcohol intake to below the recommended limits. Researchers said that because smoking is a major risk factor for most alcohol-related cancers - apart from female breast cancer - the apparent influence of alcohol on cancer could be partly driven by its effect among smokers. Light or moderate drinking was classed as less than 15g (around one-and-a-half units or just under two drinks) a day in women and 30g (three units or three or four drinks) and below in men. The study of more than 88,000 women and 47,000 men aged over 30 found the median consumption of alcohol was 1.8g a day in women and 5.6g in men. Other findings were that abstainers or heavy drinkers were less likely than light and moderate drinkers to have had regular physical examinations by their GP and be screened for colorectal, prostate, or breast cancer.
C
ompelling new evidence that comets helped seed life on earth has emerged from experiments mimicking the bombardment of early earth. Scientists in Japan generated protein building blocks by recreating impacts by comets containing water, amino acids and silicate.
They also engaged in fewer physical activities and had lower dietary scores. Heavy drinkers were more likely to be long-term smokers.
In the tests, a propellant gun was used to fire the frozen mixture and simulate the shock of a comet striking the Earth.
Breast cancer was the leading alcohol-related cancer in women, while colorectal cancer was the major alcoholassociated cancer in men.
Analysis showed that some of the amino acids had linked together to form chained molecules called peptides.
For alcohol-related cancers, increased frequency of drinking was associated with increased risk in men but not in women, whereas binge drinking was associated with increased risk in women but not in men.
Recurring lengths of peptide chains form proteins, the large, complex and bioactive molecules from which all living things are made.
The study, which was led by Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, said it is estimated that alcohol consumption has caused 3.6 per cent of all cancers worldwide - 1.7 per cent in women and 5.2 per cent in men.

Lead researcher Dr Haruna Sugahara said the experiment showed that the cold conditions of comets at the time impact were key to this synthesis. “This finding indicates that comet impacts almost certainly played an important role in delivering the seeds of life to the early Earth,” said Dr Sugahara, from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology. “It also opens the likelihood that we will have seen similar chemical evolution in other extraterrestrial bodies, starting with cometary-derived peptides.” While much of the story of life has been explained, what kicked off the first step in the chemical evolution of complex biomolecules remains a deep mystery. Once the first short peptide chains are created, much less energy is needed to expand them further. The icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn, such as Europa and Enceladus, are likely to have undergone similar cometary bombardment. Scientists believe life could have developed in a liquid water ocean below Europa’s icy surface. The amino acid glycine had also been detected by the American space agency Nasa’s Stardust mission, which collected dust samples from Comet 81P/Wild2. The findings were presented at the Godschmidt geochemistry conference in Prague, Czech Republic.

In total, children will return to school with tech items worth STG3.2 billion in their school bags, according to the research by British independent price comparison website uSwitch.com The rise of expensive items being brought to school has also led to kids being bullied or robbed, with one in 10 parents saying their children have been bullied over technology and 13 per cent have had gadgets lost or stolen. Peter Bradley, director of services at anti-bullying charity Kidscape, warned parents to “carefully consider” what gadgets their children are taking to school. “With the start of the new academic year just around the corner, parents should carefully consider what gadgets their child is taking to school. Some children may be bullied because of the gadgets they either carry or do not even possess.” Bradley said Kidscape had recently encountered multiple incidents related to gadgets, including the case of a primary school girl who was bullied by her friends for a whole term because her mobile phone was a basic model. Bradley called on schools to do more to follow anti-bullying procedures when implementing new technology learning.

Funerals take on individual twist in New Zealand
Apparently even death isn’t the same in the 21st century. Standing next to a Lego coffin - studs included New Zealand design company Dying Art’s Ross Hall says individuality and personal expression have increasingly become major features of the way people talk about funerals. “The girl was terminally ill and all she could do was make Lego - and that’s what she wanted to go out in,” he says.
NEWS 9
CALLING ALL LOCAL BUSINESS
His company sells made-to-order coffins with everything from flowers to spaceships printed on them, but it’s changing attitudes, not technology, that has brought the change, he says. “For years we’ve been able to do a custom casket ... but now it’s so much more acceptable - because we look at death as a celebration of life.” Mr Hall’s a giant man wearing an attention-grabbing, bright pink Hawaiian shirt with purple flowers, who seems the polar opposite of what funeral industry workers are imaged as. “We’re doing one that’s the USS Enterprise,” he says with a wide smile. Dying Art hosts one of the many cheery exhibits among 31 of companies at New Zealand’s first funeral trade show in Auckland. It’s an event intended to bring companies from across the industry to show their changing wares. And change is the operative word. The Aotea Centre has been filled by companies providing everything from urns to software and coffins ranging for the very traditional to the ecofriendly and quirky. Coffin-maker TenderRest’s Mark Pattinson says in his 36 years in the industry - he started when he was 15 and grew up in a funeral home - people have opened up about a subject once considered off-limits. “I can remember going to funeral arrangements and the casket just wasn’t a thing that was discussed. But nowadays, with social media, and everyone talking about it, I think that’s the difference,” he says. The coffins behind him look like something out of sci-fi: capsule-shaped, biodegradable cardboard, light and sleek. “The younger folk are definitely having more input now and they’re a lot more environmentally aware,” he says. Katrina Shanks, the chief executive of the Funeral Directors Association, which has organised the show, says the fact it is even happening is a sign discussion about funerals is becoming more common. “It’s something as Kiwis that we really don’t do. Even though it may be a difficult conversation for many New Zealanders to have, we are maturing as a nation,” she says. The organisers hope to bring the show back in a couple years as a regular event, something that’s happened over the ditch in recent years.

Ashley Madison says site growing
E
mbattled dating-for-cheaters website Ashley Madison insists a massive hack and release of user data has not affected the site’s prospects, with hundreds of thousands of new members - including real women. Parent company Avid Life Media rejected an analysis by tech news site Gizmodo suggesting that most of the infidelity site’s supposed 5.5 million female members were actually fake accounts, or created by automatic “bots”. “Recent media reports predicting the imminent demise of Ashley Madison are greatly exaggerated,” Avid Life Media, which is based in Toronto, said in a statement.
Security, the Pentagon and the FBI are probing the data breach. Ashley Madison ran into more trouble when tech news site Gizmodo looked at the data and concluded that it showed little, if any, activity from the site’s purported female members, suggesting many accounts were in fact fake. Gizmodo said it traced many of the IP addresses for females back to Ashley Madison itself, and noted that the most popular female last name on the site also matched the name of a former employee. Avid Life Media, whose chief executive and founder Noel Biderman stepped down last week, fired back on Monday.
“Despite having our business and customers attacked, we are growing. This past week alone, hundreds of thousands of new users signed up for the Ashley Madison platform - including 87,596 women.”
“Last week, a reporter who claimed to analyse the stolen data made incorrect assumptions about the meaning of fields contained in the leaked data,” it said.
In July, Avid Life Media said hackers had stolen customer data from the site, which boasts more than 32 million users and says it is geared toward “real people seeking discreet encounters”.
“This reporter concluded that the number of active female members on Ashley Madison could be calculated based on those assumptions. That conclusion was wrong.”
Earlier this month, a hacker group calling itself the “Impact Team” released information stolen from the company’s servers, as well as corporate emails and sensitive computer source code. The hacker gang claimed it wanted to bring attention to the fact that Ashley Madison was charging clients a fee to delete their personal information, but was in fact archiving it. The leak of user data - described by Canadian authorities as “one of the largest data breaches in the world” - has been linked to two possible suicides, and has stirred concern about the potential for blackmail. Police in Toronto, along with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Ontario provincial police, US Homeland

Windows 10 on more than 75 million devices
M
icrosoft says Windows 10 has spread to more than 75 million devices since the new operating system was released less than a month ago.
The US software colossus is intent on seeing the new generation operating system aimed at computers, mobile and other devices running on a billion gadgets. Windows 10 is powering more than 90,000 different computer and tablet models, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of marketing for Windows and devices, Yusuf Mehdi, said in a series of tweets on Wednesday. More than 75 million devices now run the software, with the number “growing every day,” he said. Some 14 million people installed the Windows 10 operating system in the first 24 hours following its release on July 29 in what Microsoft touted as an “overwhelmingly positive” debut. The stakes are high for Microsoft as it pushes out the new operating system for both traditional computers and mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones. The company is hoping the new system can help it gain traction in the mobile sector, where it lags behind Google Android and Apple iOS, and in emerging technologies for computing. Windows 10 is being
offered as a free upgrade for most devices, making it possible to be available quickly on billions of devices. It will allow for voice, pen and gesture input, and in some cases biometric identification for improved security. Word of the spread of Windows 10 to devices in 192 countries came as market tracker International Data Corporation forecast that worldwide personal computer shipments will fall by 8.7 per cent this year and continue to slide through next year. “Although the shortcomings of the PC business are obvious, a silver lining is that the industry has continued to refine the more mobile aspects of personal computers - contributing to higher growth in Convertible and Ultraslim Notebooks,” said IDC senior research analyst Jay Chou. “The de-emphasis of touch on Windows 10 also paves the way for a more familiar experience and continuing unit growth on large-screen systems, particularly All-inOne PCs.”
The initiative falls under a five-year partnership, signed in April between the airline and Walt Disney that owns the rights to the saga.
Internet users must use better passwords
Vulnerable passwords played a part in the celebrity nude photo hack, and research suggests many internet users continue to risk their online safety when it comes to log-in details. A British government survey in October 2014 as part of the Cyber Streetwise campaign found that three quarters of Britons use passwords that are not secure. These include a pet’s name, place of birth or something related to a favourite sports team. The list of the most common passwords of 2014 also highlighted that based on millions of pieces of stolen data logged over the previous year, the two most common choices among web users were found to be “123456” and “password”. Mark James, an IT security specialist for anti-virus firm ESET, says internet users need to do more to protect their data, rather than solely relying on the technology companies they store information with. “We need to always examine and evaluate what data is being uploaded by default and ask ourselves do we really need to store this data in the cloud?” he said. “If we do then we have to take responsibility and ensure we use complex unique passwords. “Sadly most people choose ease of use over security.” Mr James added that the recent publicity around cyber security is a good thing, as it has prompted a greater number of advice campaigns and conversations to take place, something he says can only strength the chances of future leaks being avoided.

Pioneering see-through trailer research
L
and Rover is developing a see-through trailer concept that would completely remove the blind spot created when towing a caravan or trailer. This transparent view would allow the driver to clearly see vehicles coming up behind and help driver confidence by improving visibility whilst manoeuvring. The prototype ‘Transparent Trailer’ system fitted to a Range Rover combines the video feed from the vehicle’s existing surround camera system which includes the reversing camera and a camera on each wing mirror - with a video from a digital wireless camera that is placed on the rear of the trailer or caravan. The video feeds are then combined to create the live video images
that make the trailer behind appear see-through. When the trailer is coupled to the towing car, the live video feed would automatically appear in the rear view mirror inside the vehicle.
Dr Wolfgang Epple, Director of Research and Technology, Jaguar Land Rover, said: “When you are overtaking it is instinctive to check your mirrors, but if you are towing your vision is often restricted with large blind spots. Our Transparent Trailer project is researching how we could offer a view out of the vehicle unrestricted by your trailer, no matter what its size or shape. Our prototype system offers a very high quality video image with no distortion of other cars or obstructions. This means the driver would have exactly the

Depp jokes about Australian dog drama J
ohnny Depp has poked fun at the immigration furore surrounding his dogs’ recent visit to Australia, after a government official threatened to have the pets put down for violating quarantine regulations. The actor and his wife Amber Heard came under fire from authorities Down Under in May when it was discovered they had taken two Yorkshire terriers, named Pistol and Boo, into the country without filling out the proper paperwork or going through required quarantine procedures. They flew the dogs back to the US via private jet after Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce threatened to have the animals killed if they remained in the country, where Depp was filming the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The 52-year-old is now facing a possible 10-year prison sentence and a hefty fine for illegally smuggling the pooches into Australia, while Heard has been summoned to appear in court in Queensland on Monday to answer two charges of illegal importation and one count of producing a false document after she was served with the legal documents in July.
She had previously blasted Joyce as a “rogue thug” for threatening her dogs’ lives, adding, “It’s a sad state of affairs that that made such headline global news.”
“I killed my dogs and ate them under direct orders from some kinda, I dunno, sweaty, big-gutted man from Australia,” he said on Friday in an apparent reference to Joyce.
Now Depp has joked to the media about the international scandal at the Venice Film Festival in Italy.
Depp is in Venice to promote his new gangster movie Black Mass, a biopic about notorious Boston kingpin James “Whitey” Bulger.

Sharon Stone says basic instincts changed S
haron Stone is convinced the stroke she suffered in 2001 changed her personality.
The Hollywood actress was hospitalised after suffering a subarachnoid haemorrhage, a rare form of stroke, and spent two years learning how to walk and talk again. She has now revealed that she felt like a very different person after the health crisis, and noticed a slew of personality changes as well as physical differences. “It took two years for my body just to absorb all the internal bleeding I had. It almost feels like my entire DNA changed,” the Basic Instinct star told US magazine Harper’s Bazaar. “My brain isn’t sitting where it used to, my body type changed, and even my food allergies are different. “I became more emotionally intelligent. I chose to work very hard to open up other parts of my mind. Now I’m stronger. And I can be abrasively direct. “That scares people, but I think that’s not my problem. It’s like, I have brain damage; you’ll just have to deal with it.”

rooklyn Beckham plans to attend university in the US in a bid to carve out a career in film or photography. The 16-year-old son of retired soccer star David Beckham and his fashion designer wife Victoria had hoped to emulate his dad’s sporting success, but was dealt a blow earlier this year when he was let go by London club Arsenal after bosses decided not to offer him a scholarship. The eldest Beckham child has already signed up to a modelling agency and has also undertaken an internship with his father’s movie-making pal Guy Ritchie on the set of his upcoming film Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur. Now the teenager has revealed he wants to go to university in the US after he graduates from his British school, telling Miss Vogue magazine, “I love football (soccer), but I’m also very passionate about photography and film. I’m keeping my options open right now.... I’m hoping to study art and photography in the US, once I have finished my A-Levels (exams).”

The 90 second trailer features praise from several critics including, “a bold and inventive adaption”, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Angelina Jolie calls for action on refugees A
ngelina Jolie has written an open letter to Europe’s leaders urging them to offer sanctuary to thousands of displaced families who have found themselves stranded after fleeing conflict in the Middle East. The escalating crisis across the continent has dominated headlines in recent weeks, and now the Hollywood actress, who is a United Nations special envoy for refugees, has joined the debate and urged governments to open their borders. Jolie has teamed up with politician Baroness Arminka Helic, who came to Britain as a refugee in the 1990s after fleeing the war in Yugoslavia, to write a joint letter published in the UK’s The Times newspaper on Monday. In the message, they write, “At no time in recent history has there been a greater need for leadership to deal with the consequences and causes of the global refugee crisis. Nothing brings home this truth more than the sight of columns of refugees marching across European borders, from countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria... Over the past few weeks we have seen many members of the public and growing numbers of political leaders take a moral stand, groups of refugees being welcomed, and new commitments of assistance made. For the first time in years, refugees are leading the news and are at the forefront of debate... We need to build on this and make it a turning point... It requires us to use not just our hearts but also our heads and not just aid but also diplomacy, and to focus our efforts not just this year, but for years to come... The way we respond now will confirm what kind of countries we are, the depth of our humanity and the strength of our democracies.” Jolie’s message comes just days after veteran rocker Bob Geldof offered to open his home up to refugee families, declaring he could provide shelter right away for anyone needing help.

I’m a charming man with a cheeky smile and a big heart. I have a kind temperament and would suit a home looking for a constant companion. I bond incredibly well with people and can become worried when left alone for too long. I need a compassionate owner who can teach me how to be more independent as I grow confidence and settle into my new home. I am very loyal and would like to spend all of my time with my family, so I would prefer an indoor lifestyle. I love to run and would suit an active family that goes for daily walks. I’m familyorientated and would love to live with a family and older kids. I may be happy living with a friendly de-sexed dog that is full of life and likes to play.

BIG GUIDE 23
Interview: Boy & Bear
PEARL: His approach to recording is quite different to what you guys are used to - recording songs in one hit. Was that stressful recording this way?
W
ith its live premiere at this year’s Splendour In The Grass Festival, Boy & Bear have released ‘Walk the Wire’ the first single from their third studio album Limit of Love, the follow-up to their #1 ARIA Album and platinumselling Harlequin Dream. PEARL’s Jess Taylor caught up with Dave Hosking and Dave Symes for a chat at Universal Music headquarters this week. “I was shitting myself” - says Hosking, lead singer of Boy and Bear when asked to reflect on the recording process that was. Guided by renowned producer Ethan Johns the guys took a different approach to their third studio album. ‘Limit of Love’ was recorded in Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studio the old fashioned way, live, one take at a time with no overdubs. I know right? Amazing. Perhaps the preparation was in the 170 odd shows they played last year, which spanned three continents? The proof is in the pudding, and my-oh-my does it warm the eardrums. The best news is you all get to hear the album live when they come to Melbourne’s iconic Festival Hall for a show in January next year. PEARL: You teamed up with Ethan Johns on the album, what was it like working together? SYMES: “We were talking last year when we were touring, we started to think about who we should work with on the next record, we had quite a big list of people that we had all brought to the table. We discussed the kind of things they had done previously and the people they had worked with and whet some of the results were and Ethan was on that list. We were really excited by a lot of the records he had done so we reached out to him and managed to meet him in London at the end of our tour last December. We had lunch with him and talked to him about music and the kind of records we were hoping to make and he seemed really excited and enthusiastic, we feel very fortunate that he was available and into doing it.
HOSKING: “Yeah that’s the emotional hurdle that stops a lot of bands taking this approach as it can be quite stressful. But I think once you get your head around that, there are multiple components that come into being comfortable in that approach, I think having someone like Ethan is key to that because he is such a big advocate for that approach. SYMES: “He’s got a lot of experience recording that way in that whole analogue technology and he really encourages the band to get the best out of their performance in that situation.” PEARL: The last track on the album, Foxhole your voice is a bit husky and I read that you didn’t like it... I think that tone summed up the record quite nicely like you’re taken on this journey and this song is the same riff in Southern Star, what’s end of that journey. Did you guys choose this song to be last on the the story behind this track? HOSKING: “We wrote that as a album for that reason? group. Tim and I wrote the lyrics SYMES: “We had a bunch of together, the melody came first different track listings and that then the lyrics and the Walk The one popped out, I think when we Wire sound-bite came very quickly. did record that track though it does sum up the whole recording We tried to build up around that. I rang Tim and I said I’ve got this process. idea this classic scene where boy HOSKING: “That was the first take meets girl and he is kind of nervous wasn’t it?” about it and that kind of internal SYMES: “Yeah the first or second battle you’ve got with yourself when you want to approach take, we felt couldn’t match it.” someone but you’re white nervous HOSKING: “I wanted to re do it about it and fumbling and you don’t (laughs) I hated the vocal on it” know what to do. Tim’s a wonderful SYMES: it’s just really honest. I songwriter as well, that kind of think the whole performance from concept it’s a bit cliché but together everybody just locked into the it was like let’s do this it will be fun right sort of gear straight away and it’s light hearted. We thought on that track, the groove I don’t it was cool and ended up working know, I think you’re right it’s nice quite well. at the end.” PEARL: Man Alone was one of my PEARL: And that recording other favourites on the album - the studio… Wow track I listened to the most. The SYMES: “It was a magical setting, interpretation I made of it was you have this guy who is constantly it was in a small town called Box, 25 minutes out of Bath. The amongst the nightlife picking up girls, yet he is lonely and searching countryside there is beautiful for love, he wants to settle down it’s really green and idyllic and and change his ways but at the old quaint in an English way. same time does that same thing The studio and its surrounding week in week out? cottages are beautiful stone. You’re just sitting there in this HOSKING: “Yeah I think that’s natural light with running water it, in terms of the idea of limit and you know you’re very happy of love I think that’s one of the to sit in the studio for 12 hours a songs that explains the grimy day. You aren’t at all bothered by end of love. You know the things its very beautiful setting.” you do when you’re in need. Yeah that’s exactly what the PEARL: “So the first single from the album ‘Walk the Wire’ the guitar song is about.” riff in there reminded me of the
PEARL: Take us through the piano at the beginning of ‘Hollow Ground’ it reminded me of Billy Joel. HOSKING: “I do like Billy Joel” SYMES: “The keyboard we were recording was kind of going for that Beatles Penny Lane thing.” HOSKING: “Ethan was a part of that wasn’t he, plotting the piano in the choruses and a classic example of Ethan’s subtle producing, he is genius at work. That song was sounding good not brilliant and Ethan was like yeah let’s bring in the piano at the start and get rid of the acoustic and the vocals. It was one of those classic moments where the whole thing went boom and holy f*#! that sounds great.” PEARL: Let’s talk gigs, you are about to head back over to Europe, but you are coming back to the homeland in January? HOSKING: “Yeah we are playing at Festival Hall in January and we can’t wait.” SYMES: “We love coming to Melbourne. HOSKING: “It’s fun playing at home, Sydney’s is great but there’s pressure because it’s family and friends. It might seem like I’m just saying this but it’s really fun playing in Melbourne. Boy & Bear’s brand new album Limit Of Love is released Friday October 9th with the lead single Walk The Wire available now through Universal Music. For more details visit boyandbear.com JESS TAYLOR

t the Frankfurt International Motor Show, CITROËN will premier a concept car inspired by the iconic 1960s Citroen Méhari: the CITROËN CACTUS M. An ‘outdoor’ take on the C4 Cactus, this new concept car has a bright, upbeat personality. Looking beyond design, CITROËN is expressing a lifestyle approach with the CACTUS M, placing leisure at the heart of the automotive experience. At ease on all types of terrain and in all situations, the CACTUS M concept inspires a sense of well-being, freedom and escape. Through its design, the CITROËN CACTUS M turns leisure into a lifestyle, placing it at the heart of the automotive experience. The interior illustrates this approach, with technical materials used in open-air activities. For full and uncompromising use, the cabin can be hosed out thanks to the drainage outlets integrated in the foot wells. Inspired by the world of surfing, the seats are designed to resemble wetsuits, and are upholstered in a brightly coloured neoprene fabric for comfort and waterproofing. The CITROËN CACTUS M is also a modular vehicle, with a roof extension that enables passengers to store all their equipment (wakeboard, windsurf board, etc.). Everything is designed for comfort and peace of mind. The CITROËN CACTUS M was also designed to head off the beaten path, to explore and open up new horizons. Whatever the activity, the weather or the road conditions, everything is designed to ensure a relaxing ride for the occupants. On all types of terrain, the Grip Control function optimises traction for a relaxed ride anywhere. The CACTUS M also inspires a sense of extreme freedom with a modular cabin that turns into a couchette and a top that can be made into a tent. This top, which features an innovative system of inflation, also provides protection in the event of rain. The CITROËN CACTUS M also features onboard technologies for everyday use with all the useful equipment found on the C4 Cactus (touch drive interface, Easy Push system, etc.). The CACTUS M concept is a modern take on the values that led to the development of the Méhari. Values relating to comfort, well-being and leisure, which have always been part of CITROËN. DIsplayed alongside the C4 Cactus and the Aircross concept, the CACTUS M concept illustrates the vitality of the brand and the coherence of its approach. One year on from launch, CITROËN
is displaying a new take on the C4 Cactus at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, with a concept of muscular lines, totally open to the outside world. The SUV looks of the CACTUS M, already suggested by the C4 Cactus, are underlined by its styling and specific features. At front and rear, the strong, sculpted side lines convey a sense of power. The use of Tall & Narrow tyres made it possible to increase wheel diameter while reducing width, thus increasing body height. This impression is reinforced by the specific wheel arches. The strong compact build of the CACTUS M is underlined by the 60° rake of the windscreen and the thickness of the pillar, which conveys a sense of strength. The CITROËN CACTUS M has two long doors, further underlining the impression of compact lines. The design of these one-piece parts in moulded plastic makes them particularly easy to use while also reducing overall vehicle weight. These doors are designed like Airbump® and use the same concept with their thermoformed TPU coating. This second skin, which is also used on the bumper protection, resists knocks and scratches as well as salt water, sand and anything else that could create a barrier between leisure and mobility. Inspired by the surfing spirit, the CITROËN CACTUS M has no roof or front pillar. It is completely open to the outside. The wood plating over the boot arch and on the windscreen pillars, brings to mind the way surfboard manufacturers customise their boards. The cheerful wheel pattern resembles the floral pattern of wetsuits. The logo, visible on the boot arch, may be perceived as a signature for what could be a “Freestyle” collection by CITROËN. With its modular interior and this innovative top, the CITROËN CACTUS M overcomes logistics issues to leave more room for improvisation and freedom. For example, the CACTUS M can be turned into a bivouac for two people, making it possible to extend the outdoor experience. By means of an ingenious tilting mechanism, the rear seat becomes an extension of the boot, which opens downwards to create a couchette for two people. Users can either sleep in the open or under cover, using the inflation function to turn the top into a freestanding tent. This tent folds out at the rear of the vehicle, enabling two people measuring 1.80m in height to stand upright. No more limits stand in the way of the quest for discovery.

Western Port: TOP END Jayson Turner from Pro Red Fishing Charters got amongst the early season snapper last Saturday afternoon while fishing the shallows in the top end of the Port. There is no lack of fish at the moment but patience and fresh bait is key to these cold water reds. Jayson Turner also went on a mission Wednesday night and found some cracker fish. One fish went 82cm - 6.1kg, the other 80cm -5.3kg. He had another 6 or more that screamed off and weren’t hooked that he will never ever know what size they were…Leigh Easton stumbled across a couple of healthy snapper while fishing in glassed out conditions on Tuesday morning. Leigh reports that fresh squid was the key while fishing the run in tide. Great work mate. TYABB BANK Staff member Nathan Peterson shot out for an after work squid onslaught last week and managed to land twelve in no time at all. Nathan was using the new Hayabusa squid jigs and reports that they are a killer! Great work Nath. Pat Ellaby fished in rainy conditions last Thursday, but despite the soaking, he managed to pull six quality calamari including this beautiful looking specimen. Love ya work.

Mayweather sends jet for daughter F
loyd Mayweather found himself with a problem as he headed to work on Tuesday to try to sell sceptical fans on what he insists will be his last fight.
It wasn’t with Andre Berto, his hand-picked opponent Saturday night for the 49th fight of his long career. It’s hard to find anyone much less Mayweather - who thinks Berto is going to give Mayweather many problems in his final fight. The issue Mayweather was dealing with came in a text from one of his daughters. She was in Los Angeles wondering if she had to fly commercial to come see her father or if he would send his private jet. “I said I’d send the jet,” Mayweather said. Just another day in the life of the highestpaid athlete in the world, who pulled down more than $US200 million ($A284.78 million) for his fight in May with Manny Pacquiao.
There are some things, though, that are “I’m really ready to see another fighter at the quite different than the last time Mayweather top,” he said. “I’ve done it all. I’ve broken went into the ring. so many records I don’t even know all the The opponent is Berto, not Pacquiao. There records I’ve broken.” is little hype, and little chance Berto will rise to the occasion and become the first boxer to ever beat Mayweather as a pro.
Instead of $200 million, Mayweather will settle for a reported $32 million. And instead of seats going for thousands of dollars, there were still a lot of tickets for sale for just a few hundred dollars for a fight that is getting little buzz. He said again Tuesday that this will be his last fight, and he will not be tempted to break Rocky Marciano’s mark of 49-0 or to open the new arena on the Las Vegas Strip with a big bout next spring. “I’m not breaking that 50-0,” Mayweather said. “Don’t worry about that.”
Mayweather defended his choice of Berto No need to get too hyped up for Berto, not as an opponent, even though Berto has lost that Mayweather gets too worked up about three of his last six fights, two of them to any of his opponents, including Pacquiao. fighters Mayweather easily beat. “He’s a former world champion so “This is normal for me,” Mayweather told a small group of reporters after his official it’s obvious he did something right,” Mayweather said. arrival for fight week at the MGM Grand hotel. “I’ve been here before, met with all Mayweather said he was secure in his place you guys before. And the results will be in boxing history and wants to step back and the same as before.” promote other fighters.

Socceroos are like ‘machines’: Cahill
S
It all holds Australia in good stead as they look towards next month’s qualifier against secondplaced Jordan.
Cahill scored Australia’s last two goals in Tuesday night’s 3-0 win over Tajikistan in Dushanbe but could barely contain his delight about how they were created.
A win there and the Socceroos will move five points clear on top of Group B, an almost unassailable position that would put them within touching distance of the next phase of qualification.
occeroos superstar Tim Cahill says he and his teammates have become “machines” who know exactly where the others will be at all times.
His first, in the 74th minute, was a clinical finish off a Ryan McGowan cutback while his second, in injury time, was a product of a near-telepathic understanding he says he has forged with winger Tommy Oar, a second-half substitute who provided him with a pinpoint cross from the left. “Tommy Oar comes on and he doesn’t even have to look at me,” Cahill said. “Time and time again he knows that I make my run from the second (defender) to the middle, that I don’t run in front of the first defender. That’s my game. “I was buzzing, and I said to Tommy that’s not the first time he has done that. “Seeing us now we are like machines, the way we run. “It’s the football that we wanted to play. We have come here knowing why we have won.”
But Cahill holds bad memories of the last time the national side visited Jordan three years ago. Under former coach Holger Osieck, the Socceroos fell 2-1, a loss that was endemic of the team’s problems at the time and appeared to put their 2014 World Cup hopes in jeopardy. Cahill said there is a completely different feel about the team this time around. “The last qualifying campaign was probably the most difficult of those I have been a part of,” he said. “We were lucky in some instances and just did enough. Now going into this game against Jordan, and even going into the Bangladesh and Tajikistan games, there was a really good confidence amongst the lads. “Our midfield is fully stacked. It seems like everything is going really well.”

Kyrgios given time to regroup: Masur A
ustralian captain Wally Masur has placed Nick Kyrgios in Davis Cup exile until the temperamental youngster sorts himself out.
As Australia battle Great Britain in next week’s semi-final in Glasgow, Masur wants Kyrgios to “regroup” after a turbulent two months. Kyrgios, who lost in four sets to British spearhead Andy Murray in the first round of the US Open last week, has lurched from one PR disaster to the next since Wimbledon. After a series of run-ins with officialdom at the All England Club, the 20-yearold’s infamous sledging of French Open champion Stan Wawrinka at the Montreal Masters led to sanctioning from the ATP for aggravated behaviour and widespread condemnation in the locker room. In between, the two-time grand slam quarter-finalist declared “I don’t want to be here” during his shock first-day Davis Cup singles loss to Kazakhstan’s world No.115 Aleksandr Nedovyesov in Darwin.
him to spend a bit of time to regroup. “It’s important that he starts to focus on what his team looks like going forward because he’s obviously been without a coach since Todd Larkham and he split (before Wimbledon). “He’s got Lleyton in his corner so obviously he’s established a good relationship there with Lleyton, but he really does need to get that guy that’s with him on the road day in, day out.” Masur has recalled Bernard Tomic after the Australian No.1’s suspension from the quarter-final win over Kazakhstan and retained Lleyton Hewitt, Sam Groth and Thanasi Kokkinakis. With Masur confirming Hewitt and Groth were almost certain to play doubles, Tomic and Kokkinakis are favoured to feature in next Friday’s opening singles rubber in Glasgow. Masur said Kyrgios still had time to push for a recall should Australia make the final. “Nick has been in the Tennis Australia program for years, so the question is how do we help this guy absolutely maximise his potential?” the skipper said.
Masur believes Kyrgios is already at a career crossroad and, after consulting Tennis Australia’s director of men’s player performance Pat Rafter, the pair decided the “There’s no question that Nick just has to get things right, get back on court. volatile youngster should miss next week’s semi-final. “I thought he played pretty well against Andy Murray here and I said to Nick afterwards: “The tie in Darwin was the first time that If you knuckle down and you get the right I had the opportunity to have Nick in the team behind you, and you put in the right squad and obviously he had been going yards, then you’re going to beat this guy in through a lot prior to Darwin,” Masur told one year’s time at the US Open. he National Basketball league has signed a five-year deal with pay-tv provider Fox Sports to show every NBL game live. The deal starts with the coming 2015-16 season, with the parties to review terms at the end of the season. The NBL has scheduled games every night from Wednesday to Sunday during the regular season, with the matches broadcast in high definition on Fox. “Ultimately it (the deal) will lead to a more professional game and something we can be proud of,” NBL executive director Larry Kestelman told AAP. He said his organisation was in discussions with a couple of parties about free-to-air television coverage. Kestelman said securing a naming rights sponsor wouldn’t be a problem with discussions currently proceeding with a number of companies.

The Broncos’ title hopes rest squarely on Manning’s 39-year-old shoulders. A revamped offence under new coach Gary Kubiak should ease wear-and-tear on the veteran star, who starts the year with 69,691 passing yards and needs 2,148 to surpass Packers legend Brett Favre atop the all-time list.
In San Francisco, Hayne is in the spotlight. Having played his way into the 49ers’ 53man squad, the former rugby league star is already putting the NFL on the map in his homeland. Niners coach Jim Tomsula called Hayne’s successful leap a “tremendous achievement”.
Manning isn’t the only QB eyeing a milestone. New Orleans’ Drew Brees needs four touchdown passes and Brady six to become the fourth and fifth signal-callers to throw 400 TDs in a career.

“It’s the true story, the American way or the Australian way,” Tomsula said of Hayne’s appeal. “Work hard, keep driven, and you’ve made it.” It’s a go-get-em philosophy the NFL continues to market to great effect overseas, and this year again sees it take it’s bonecrunching brand of action to Britain for three regular-season games in London.
Dallas Cowboys’ Jason Witten needs 57 catches to join Tony Gonzalez as the only tight ends with 1,000 career receptions. In Tampa Bay and Tennessee, all eyes will be on a pair of rookie quarterbacks taken first and second in the NFL draft.
The number might have been more but for the demands of this year’s Rugby World Cup, with talk of a London NFL franchise getting louder every season even as the league targets growth in neighbours Mexico and Canada and distant China.
