enya's president has set fire to thousands of elephant tusks and rhino horns, destroying a stockpile that would have been worth a fortune to smugglers and sending a message that trade in the animal parts must be stopped.

"We need to kill the trade"

Plumes of smoke rose as the flames took hold of tusks piled up in a game reserve on the edge of the capital Nairobi, destroying 105 tonnes of ivory from about 8000 animals, the biggest ever incineration of its kind. This is the largest single destruction of ivory conducted by any country in history, says the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS). President Uhuru Kenyatta dismissed those who argued Kenya, which staged its first such burning in 1989, should instead have sold the ivory and the tonne of rhino horn, which by some estimates would have an illegal market value of $US150 million ($A197 million).

From 1.2 million in the 1970s, the number of elephants roaming Africa has plunged to around 400,000. he wreckage of the Endeavour, the ship that 18th-century British explorer Captain James Cook sailed through the uncharted South Pacific, may lie just off Rhode Island's coast in Newport Harbour, researchers say.

South Pacific to end with most of the crew alive, said Edward Gray, a Florida State University history professor.

New research by the Rhode Island Marine Archeology Project indicates it was one of a group of five of the 13 vessels sunk in an effort to prevent French forces from coming to the aid of the rebellious American colonies, said Kathy Abbass, executive director of the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission (RIMAP).

An inspection of the site by RIMAP, in water less than 15 metres deep, found the remnants of four ships and an indentation where a fifth may be, Abbass said. They had been positioned to protect a battery of cannon.

The story of the Endeavour has inspired subsequent tales of exploration, including the Star Trek television and movie series. One of the United States' former fleet of space shuttles also took the Endeavour's name. There is a replica of the ship at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney.

"Every time Europeans did this, it was an absolute cataclysm," Gray said. "When we saw that here's five that were put in front of the north battery, well glory be, we found four of them and there's a hole where the fifth one should be," Abbass told reporters in Providence on Wednesday. "That's pretty significant." Cook sailed the Endeavour with a crew of 94 on a 1768-1771 Pacific expedition that marked the first time Westerners laid eyes on New Zealand and Australia's Great Barrier Reef. This is not the first time wreckage has been identified as the Endeavour. Another ship was found in an area of the harbour that has since been built over as landfill, that may in fact have been the Resolution, the ship Cook sailed around Antarctica, Abbass said. "It turns out that Rhode Island, specifically Newport, is the home of two vessels that went around the world with Cook," Abbass said.

N. Korea to step up nuclear capability N

orth Korea says it will further strengthen self-defensive nuclear weapons capability "in quality and quantity" in a decision adopted at a rare Workers' Party congress, its KCNA news agency reports. North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un says his country will not use nuclear weapons unless its sovereignty is infringed on by others with nuclear arms, state media reports.

"As a responsible nuclear weapons state, our republic will not use a nuclear weapon unless..."

The North will "faithfully fulfil" its obligation for nuclear non-proliferation and strive for ending nuclear build-up in the world, Kim said in a report to a congress of its ruling Workers' Party. The first congress in 36 years began with much fanfare amid anticipation by the South Korean government and experts that the young leader will try to use it to further consolidate power in a state he took over in 2011 after his father's sudden death. "As a responsible nuclear weapons state, our republic will not use a nuclear weapon unless its sovereignty is encroached upon by any aggressive hostile forces with nukes," KCNA quoted Kim as saying. "And it will faithfully fulfil its obligation for non-proliferation and strive for the global denuclearisation." "The WPK and the DPRK government

will improve and normalise the relations with those countries which respect the sovereignty of the DPRK and are friendly towards it, though they had been hostile toward it in the past," Kim was quoted as saying. DPRK is short for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Kim also called for improved ties with the rival South by erasing misunderstanding and mistrust, although he had made similar proposals in the past that led to talks by government officials that made little progress.

"We will consistently take hold on the strategic line of simultaneously pushing forward the economic construction and the building of nuclear force and boost selfdefensive nuclear force both in quality and quantity as long as the imperialists persist in their nuclear threat and arbitrary practices" North Korea came under pressure in the latest UN sanctions in March after its fourth nuclear test in January and a long-range rocket launch the next month, but it has defied international pressure with more activities under its nuclear and missile programs.

France to give us sleek black shark sub

French submarine, Shortfin Barracuda, designed by the DCNS group.

I

n a vast shed at the French port city of Cherbourg, the new Barracuda nuclear attack submarine is in the final stages of construction. It’s design is close to how Australia’s new subs will appear - a sleek black shark which will be the world’s most advanced conventionally-powered (non-nuclear) submarine with technology more complex than the space shuttle. It will be built almost entirely in Adelaide. The French nuclear Barracuda weighs 4700 tonnes and measures 99.5 metres. Australia’s version, named the Shortfin Barracuda, will weigh 4500 tonnes and measure 97 metres, substantially bigger than the 3100-tonne, 77-metre Collins they will replace. It will feature some very advanced equipment, especially the pump jet in place of a conventional propeller. It will produce a thousandth of the detectable blade noise of some older French nuclear subs. The Shortfin Barracuda will feature other advanced technology. Conventional optical periscopes - a staple of all submarine movies - will make way for fully electronic surveillance and attack periscopes. Rather than yelling “up periscope”, the commander will observe potential targets on a display screen in the control room.

“De-nuking” the design is no trivial technical challenge. The reactor, about the size of a Smart car, and its shielding, steam turbine and back-up diesels will make way for six large diesels. There will be a large bank of batteries. A major design change will involve creation of a large tank around the rear hull for diesel fuel. When the federal government launched the Competitive Evaluation Process at the start of last year, France was a relative latecomer, after Germany and Japan. That, plus the seemingly daunting technical challenge of converting a nuclear design to a conventional boat, meant the French bid weren’t taken completely seriously. Govt Gunning for Carp

he federal government has declared a $15 million war on the imported fish described as one of the country’s most devastating pests. “We are going to visit Carpegeddon on the great pest of the River Murray, the European carp,” South Australian cabinet minister Christopher Pyne told reporters at Murray Bridge. The money will be spent implementing the national carp control plan, which will include introducing a herpes virus into waterways from the end of 2018 to wipe out 95 per cent of the carp population over the next 30 years. s Asia’s largest electronic information exhibition, CITE (China Information Technology Expo) is organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of China and the Municipal Government of Shenzhen. The expo this year covered topics such as: Internet of Things and information security; flat panel displays including LED and touchscreen; intelligent manufacturing and 3D printing; industrial robots and intelligent systems; intelligent hardware; new energy such as lithium batteries and new energy cars, and electronic components.

of over 1 million square feet. Over 100 workshops covering 40 topics were held, and more than 3,000 key products made their debuts. Among all the latest technologies, VR attracted significant attention with virtual and augmented reality (AR) tech startup VRGate releasing their latest headset ‘Rainbow Stone’, which is equipped with a 110-degree fully immersive field angle to ensure a pure VR experience.

Commenting on the launch, the company’s Chairman Tian Xiaoyu said; “2016 is widely acknowledged as the year VR will take off, The Expo highlighted the trends of intelligent and as an emerging industry, companies living, virtual reality (VR) equipment and will provide users with a better experience other technologies, and offered predictions based on their past services for business for the future of the industry. clients.” The expo this year attracted more than 1,700 leading companies across an area

As one of the main organizers, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information

Technology (MIIT) has pledged to establish 15 national creative manufacturing centers by 2020. It also predicts that all the technologies shown during CITE 2016 will fundamentally change the traditional business patterns and management modes. “The electronic information technology industry is still booming,” said Huai Jinpeng, vice minister of MIIT. “It is not only innovating and integrating within itself, but also creating value and crossover with other industries including manufacturing, energy, materials and biotechnology. This will be an important area for the new round of technological and industrial revolution.” The MIIT also recently released the White paper of VR industry development, analyzing the status quo, key growth obstacles and possible applications of virtual reality.

Scientists involved in the discovery now seek to learn how many more Manx comets exist, which could help to resolve debate over exactly how and when the solar system settled into its current configuration. “Depending how many we find, we will know whether the giant planets danced across the solar system when they were young, or if they grew up quietly without moving much,” paper co-author Olivier Hainaut, an astronomer with the European Southern Observatory in Germany,

But C/2014 S3 was dark and virtually tailless when it was spotted about twice as far away from the sun as Earth. Later analysis showed that instead of ices typically found on comets, the Manx comet contained materials similar to the rocky asteroids between Mars and Jupiter. And C/2014 S3 appeared pristine, an indication that it had been in the solar system’s deep freeze for a long time, said University of Hawaii astronomer Karen Meech, the lead author. The discovery of additional Manx comets could help scientists to refine computer models used to simulate the solar system’s formation, Meech said.

China's roadmap to self-driving cars I

n the race to develop self-driving cars, the United States and Europe lead in technology, but China is coming up fast in the outside lane with a regulatory structure that could put it ahead in the popular adoption of autonomous cars on its highways and city streets. A draft roadmap for having highway-ready, self-driving cars within three to five years and autonomous vehicles for urban driving by 2025 could be unveiled as early as this year, said Li Keqiang, an automotive engineering professor at Tsinghua University who chairs the committee drafting the plan.

patchwork of state laws and standards in the United States. Without coordination, that patchwork could hold back the development of self-driving cars in the US, David Strickland, a former safety chief for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said at an event in Beijing this month.

China's top-down approach could see it overtake the US and Europe, where automakers have generally been left to agree among themselves on industry standards. A push for self-driving and The panel is backed by the powerful Ministry electric cars also fits with Beijing's shift to an of Industry and Information Technology. economy driven by high-tech and consumer industries rather than heavy industry and The draft will set out technical standards, low-end manufacturing. including a common language for cars "If we can convince the government that to communicate with each other and infrastructure, and regulatory guidelines - a every company, every car on the road must use this (single standard) ... then there is unified framework that contrasts with a leggings emblazoned with RED From laser-eyed cats to duvets covered in Cage's face, Redbubble has BUBBLE Nicholas printed its way to a stock market float $267 million valuation. PRINTING and Redbubble, started a decade ago by friends in Melbourne, is one of MONEY three the largest online platforms allowing anyone to sell designs printed on products including T-shirts, cushion covers and phone cases.

"We have people come to Redbubble because people want that type of creativity, they want it in their lives or they are actually artists themselves," co-founder and chief executive Martin Hosking said. About 45 per cent of artists who first sold on the website in 2006 still sell in 2016, Mr Hosking said. Due to list on the Australian Securities Exchange on May 16 at an issue price of $1.33, Redbubble hopes to raise nearly $30 million in a bid to continue its growth. Key to the success of the company was a focus on the worldwide market from

a chance China can beat the rest of the world" to the widespread use of self-driving cars, said Li Yusheng, head of Chongqing Changan Automobile's autonomous drive program. China is ripe for the advent of self-driving cars. It's the world's biggest autos market and is blighted by choking air pollution, traffic congestion and often erratic driving. More than 200,000 people die each year in road accidents, according to World Health Organisation estimates. As relative newcomers to mass car ownership Chinese also tend not to share the West's love affair with driving. In a 2015 World Economic Forum survey, 75 per cent of Chinese said they would likely ride in a self-driving car, versus half of Americans. Within 20 years, China will be the largest market for autonomous features, accounting for at least a quarter of global demand, says Boston Consulting Group. the very start, Mr Hosking said. "Redbubble comes out of an unusual position of actually scaling a global company out of Australia," he said. Australia had a few tech successes but very few were consumer-focused, he said. Although there is a professional artistic community on the site, Redbubble also reflects internet culture with memes and pop culture printed on almost anything. "The internet can be a pretty wild spot," Mr Hosking said. Since Redbubble's inception, competitors such as Society6 and Print All Over Me have sprung up but Mr Hosking said the closest was still half the size of his company. "They've had very little impact on us or our growth rate simply because, once the marketplace gets going, it's very sticky," he said. "The more artists you have, the more consumers you have. The more consumers you have, the more artists you have."

Apple co-founder says AI revolution is coming T

he world is on the precipice of an artificial intelligence revolution, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak says.

Mr Wozniak told the Advance Queensland Innovation and Investment Summit in Brisbane recently, via a live feed from Orlando in Florida, machines were closer than ever to emulating the human brain. “I looked at the brain my whole life thinking we would never understand how it’s wired, never know what consciousness is, we would never know what intuition is,” he said.

“We’re just at the verge of where the machines may take off and go much further than even we humans could make them go.” Mr Wozniak also took a question from 16-year-old Brisbane State High School student Dunija Ariyaratne, who co-founded start-up TechFlow and asked how the next generation could improve existing technology. Mr Wozniak suggested new innovators should look at ways to improve everyday life, such as the way Uber and Airbnb have. “Look at normal life and say ‘in our lifestyle, how can we improve it with today’s technology, with apps?’,” he said.

“And now we’re seeing so many signs that are getting so close - we Meanwhile, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk speak to our phones, we can get opened the summit by announcing a $4 answers.” million start-up precinct to be opened in Mr Wozniak said the artificial Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley by the end of the intelligence revolution would be year. separate from, and have just as big She also announced an $8 million digital an influence on the world, as the campaign to encourage innovators and digital revolution that proceeded it. start-ups across Australia and the world to

SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE'S LARGEST TELESCOPE WORTH IT'S SALT S outh Africa's SALT telescope has helped detect the first white dwarf pulsar, the latest co-discovery that has astronomers eager to use the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere to unlock the galaxy's secrets. Quick reaction times, as well as being significantly cheaper than similar European or American facilities in producing the science are key competitive advantages, said a senior astronomer at the SALT consortium during a media visit. "SALT is now living up to expectations, producing high-quality science data that probe the far reaches of the universe," said Ted Williams, a director at the South African Astronomical Observatory managing the site. Scientists know of neutron stars, large objects about the size of the Sun that have compacted down at the end of their lives to something about 10km across, the last stop before a black hole.

Williams said these incredibly dense objects have been known for decades to produce pulsars, which emit regular pulses of radio waves and other electromagnetic radiation at rates of up to one thousand pulses per second. "But there is another class of compact objects called white dwarfs, bigger, the size of the earth. So rather than 10 kilometres in size we are looking at 6000 kilometres and we've just discovered the very first white dwarf pulsar," he said of the previously unknown celestial phenomena. Situated atop a hill in the desolate Northern Cape around 350km north of Cape Town, the $US43 million

“You now know that you have the support of the government, you have the support of the community and we can make Queensland the start-up state,” Ms Palaszczuk said. The summit featured 60 speakers and more than 70 international delegates representing 17 countries. ($A56 million) SALT telescope used its powerful spectroscopy light measurement tool to prove the existence of the white dwarf pulsar. Shared by a consortium of partners from South Africa, India, America and Europe, SALT's queuing system allows it to interrupt routine observations and within minutes focus its 10-metre optical telescope on new discoveries, said Williams. In February, SALT was the first major telescope to take a spectrum of a supernova in the nearby Centaurus A galaxy hours after its discovery. It also helped reveal one of the biggest explosions ever recorded in the universe, 200 times more powerful than a typical supernova and believed to have shone at 570 billion times the brightness of the Sun. Together with Australia, South Africa is also co-hosting the world's biggest and most advanced radio telescope, the $US2 billion ($A2.6 billion) "Square Kilometre Array" which will study the origins of the universe and help probe for extraterrestrial life.

David Attenborough still eager at 90

D

avid Attenborough, who turns 90 on Sunday, isn't resting on his laurels or any other element of the natural world he's explored so fully.

The sheer joy of continuing to work and learn keeps him "wanting to get up in the morning and have a go at it," he said in an email. "It would be terrible if you knew it all, and nobody ever will."

The man behind acclaimed documentaries including Life on Earth and The Life of Birds is giving insects their TV close-up in Smithsonian Channel's three-part Micro Monsters with David Attenborough.

The British-born Attenborough, who plans to spend his birthday with family and friends, attributes his enduring curiosity and energy to children.

He will reprise his role as narrator for Planet Earth II, the BBC's recently announced sequel to the awe-inspiring 2006 project. And he brushes aside any notion that his curiosity or drive might flag after more than 100 films and series (as producer, writer or presenter, and at times all three) and some 25 books.

"I've never met a child who's not interested in natural history. Just the simplest thing, a fiveyear-old turning over a stone and seeing a slug and (saying) 'What a treasure!' (and) 'Well, how does it live, what are those things on the front?' Kids love it! Kids understand the natural world is fascinating. So the question is (how does) anyone lose the interest in nature?"

Axl Rose pulls off AC/DC show

A

xl Rose has taken to the throne with his busted leg yet again, this time for his debut performance with AC/DC. The Guns N Roses frontman joined the Aussie rock band on the stage for the first time on Saturday night in Lisbon, Portugal. The show marked the first performance for Rose with the band since replacing longtime AC/DC vocalist Brian Johnson, who was forced to quit touring due to the risk of "total hearing loss", Rolling Stone reported. Fans praised the Guns N Roses singer for his efforts and described him as a

"legendary vocalist". "25 years ago if someone told me Axl Rose would be singing for AC/DC in the future I would think they were mental," Stuart McLaughlin said on Facebook. "I know he's got a lot of haters but he's still got one of the best voices out there. Not many singers could do this song justice but I think Axl has managed it." Pedro Goncalves added: "I was there and Axl nail it completely. Great rock roll show and in these days (sic) is getting rare when everything becomes very predictable."

Some fans however were still gripping onto the old days saying they are disappointed by the band's choice to replace Johnson. "They sound good but it's really not AC/DC anymore, they should rename it he Angus Young band or something," Dave Miranda said on Facebook. "Mmmm...just seen some video from the gig.....no no no.....I never liked his (Rose's) voice anyway but he's shouting not singing and trying to sound like an ac/dc singer when he should be aiming to sound like his (weaseling) self," Andy Furniss added. The Lisbon show was the first on the Aussie band's European tour, which will wrap up on June 12 in Denmark.

oody Allen is still smitten with his wife of 20 years because she's been "a great companion". The filmmaker sparked controversy when he went public with his romance with Soon-Yi Previn, his ex-partner Mia Farrow's adopted daughter, in the early 1990s. They wed in 1997 and Woody insists he made the right choice to spend the rest of his life with his Korean-born wife, who is 36 years younger than the director.

"One of the great experiences of my life has been my wife," he tells the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter. "She had a very, very difficult upbringing in Korea - she was an orphan on the streets, living out of trash cans and starving as a six-year-old. And she was picked up and put in an orphanage. "I've been able to really make her life better. I provided her with enormous opportunities, and she has sparked to them. She's educated herself and has tons of friends... and got a college degree and went to graduate school, and she has travelled all over with me now. She's very sophisticated and has been to all the great capitals of Europe. She has just become a different person. "The contributions I've made to her life have given me more pleasure than all my films." Admitting he adores Soon-Yi, who has given him "a wonderful life", Allen added, "She's a great companion and a great wife. She has given me a stable and wonderful home life and great companionship. I guess whenever you meet somebody and they're the right person for you, there is a great emotional contribution they make to your life." But she hasn't changed the filmmaker. "I might be the same person I was when I was 20," he told the publication. "I seem to have the same habits, the same work habits, the same phobias, the same enjoyments. I don't think I have changed much over the years at all."

K

risten Stewart hailed her movie mother Jodie Foster as a "baller on every level" as she was honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The former child star-turnedOscar winner was saluted with her own pavement plaque in front of the TCL Chinese Theatre IMAX on Wednesday, and her Panic Room co-star Stewart was on hand to fete the Hollywood veteran. Recalling their work on the 2002 thriller, when Stewart was just 10 years old, the Twilight star admitted Foster had become her "first adult friend" - and it was a dream come true to work alongside her acting idol. "I watched Taxi Driver when I was far too young to watch it," Stewart admitted. "And I was already saying Jodie Foster was my favourite actress before I was cast as her daughter." "Technically she was cast as my mum," she quipped. "She came onto the movie late and I was there to show her the ropes. "There's nothing self-serving about her. She cares about people. She's quite the opposite of the type of person

that is gravitated towards being an actress." And it's not just Foster's onscreen talents which have continued to impress. "I was drawn to her before I met her, and trust me, she's way cooler than me," the 26-year-old laughed, as she noted Foster was "a baller on every level". Stewart continued, "She did everything young. She kicked Yale (University)'s a**. She won Oscars. She became a filmmaker herself." And she concluded her praise by insisting the Hollywood honour was long overdue: "She should have had a star on the Walk of Fame when she was 10." Hollywood Chamber of Commerce officials had actually chosen to celebrate Foster's career years ago. Announcing the ceremony in late April, Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez told WENN, "We have been waiting for a long time for Jodie Foster to set a date for her star and are thrilled that the time has come. She is a great role model for women and we are proud to add her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame."

Madonna defends revealing Met Gala outfit Q

ueen of pop Madonna has defended her risque Met Gala outfit by claiming the costume was a "political statement".

The singer who is no stranger to controversy, arrived on the red carpet in a black lace ensemble that exposed her bottom and breasts. Madonna took to social media on Thursday explaining her choice of clothing was a statement for women's rights, which she believes is "still in the dark ages". "The fact that people actually believe a woman is not allowed to express her sexuality and be adventurous past a certain age is proof that we still live in an age-ist and sexist society," she said in a lengthy post on Instagram. "I have never thought in a limited way and I'm not going to start." The singer hit back at criticism of her outfit, saying the comments are simply a reflection of prejudice, before ending on the wise words of the late musician and activist Nina Simone. "I'm not afraid to pave the way for all the girls behind me. As Nina Simone once said, the definition of freedom is being fearless." "I remain unapologetic and a rebel in this life and all the others. Join my fight for Gender Equality!" While some fans admitted the outfit wouldn't find a place in their wardrobes any time soon, they praised the singer for voicing her message. "Wow good words @madonna .. I personally didn't like your dress but reading your words made me understand your message and appreciate your outfit. #strongwomen," one fan wrote on Instagram. "Well said @madonna I've always said about u that ur very polarising and bring these issues to the forefront in everything u do," another wrote. Others, however, weren't so supportive of her "political statement". "It's your choice, obviously and that's fine. But it seems at odds with the plight to say you should respect the sexuality and style of an older woman, yet fight it at the same time thus giving in to societal pressures to stay young looking as a woman rather than show off your lines with pride. .... Grey hair and wrinkles can be sexy too if you work it right. I think you could," one fan responded.

TV legend Reg Grundy dies in wife's arms R

eg Grundy had a knack for transforming television shows into hits, a legacy that lives on in shows such as Neighbours. Grundy has died, aged 92, at the Bermuda home he shared with actress and author wife Joy Chambers.

"Reg Grundy has passed away in the arms of his beloved wife Joy, on their Bermuda estate," friend Alan Jones said on 2GB radio on Monday. Hundreds of Australian actors got their start in TV on a show produced by the Reg Grundy Organisation, which he founded in 1959 and which has subsequently morphed into FremantleMedia. Grundy television shows included The Restless Years, The Young Doctors, Prisoner, Sons And Daughters and - the jewel in the crown - Neighbours. Grundy was also expert at picking the best US game shows and making them successful in Australia. Blankety Blanks, Wheel Of Fortune, Sale Of The

Richard Wilkins described Grundy as all class.

Timberlake's son 'just like his dad' J

ustin Timberlake's baby son with wife Jessica Biel is already proving to be a joker, just like his fun-loving father, says his mother.

The celebrity couple welcomed its first child, Silas, last year and celebrated his first birthday in April. Proud mum Biel says watching her baby develop his own personality has been a great experience, and reveals Silas is quickly taking after his dad. "He's a ham (joker), just like his dad. Serious ham!," Biel smiled as she talked about her lad on US breakfast show Today. "He thinks everything is funny. He thinks sneezing is funny. He's in that moment, where bodily function is really funny." The one-year-old has also inherited his father's love of soul music: "He loves music, he likes Erykah Badu and he likes Stevie Wonder; he loves to groove," Biel gushed. Silas is also becoming familiar with Timberlake's pop songs, and the actress cannot wait to take her little boy to see dad in concert. "We listen to a lot of daddy," she continued. "He hasn't really seen him on a stage or anything like that, but I think once he sees that and connects that dot, then when we play the music, I think he's gonna realise, 'Oh, that's daddy up there'." As Biel prepares to celebrate her second Mother's Day, which falls on the same day in the US as in Australia, she admits becoming a parent has really brought out her inner lioness when it comes to her little family. "I definitely have that unit feeling. It's a good feeling, isn't it? It's very insular and it feels like, you against the world, you can do anything. It's kind of that aspirational feeling, I guess." One thing the star is struggling with, however, is spending time away from young Silas as she works on her new family-friendly restaurant, Au Fudge, in Los Angeles. "People talk about that invisible umbilical cord, that you're still connected to that person, even though you're not in the same body anymore, and that does not go away," she said.

Meet Bruiser

My name might sound tough but I’m a softie, and I just want to find my best friend. I love meeting new people and getting pats and cuddles. I’m not a little pup anymore but I’ll still climb onto your lap for extra cuddles! I am low maintenance, and I’ll just need a quick brush throughout the week. Because of my size and strength, I’d be more comfortable around bigger kids. I might even be happy living with a friendly de-sexed dog! It would be great if we could go for a walk each day! MEET WOODLOCK

Melbourne based acoustic/folk band Woodlock have sky rocketed in popularity through busking the streets of rural and capital cities around the country. Kiwi born Woodlock comprises of brothers Zech and Eze Walters on guitar/vocals and their mate Bowen Purcell providing the percussion.

Woodlock have worked hard to perfect the sounds crafted in the studio to a live setting. Focusing on strong, energetic and creative live shows to take their performance to the next level. Now based in Melbourne, the boys have gained some great recognition and created a strong following from tirelessly busking at every corner of the Melbourne CBD. Woodlock released their second EP titled ‘Labour of Love’ in 2014, produced by Wayne Connolly (Josh Pyke, The Vines). ‘Labour of Love’ made it into the top 100 in the ARIA charts as well as charting on iTunes. They’ve also sold around 29,000 EP’s to date independently. Known for captivating crowds with their energetic and creative performances Woodlock have worked hard to perfect the sounds crafted in the studio to a live setting. Following the release of their third EP “Sirens” in September 2015 and a hugely successful supporting tour for The Pierce Brothers, Woodlock will take over the stage of Mornington’s Grand Hotel on Friday 3rd of June for what is set to be an EPIC Sell Out performance. A daring new SUV vision from Infiniti

T

he Infiniti QX Sport Inspiration is an elegant and powerful expression of progressive SUV design. Laying down markers for future Infiniti QX models, the QX Sport Inspiration explores the brand’s vision for a next-generation, premium mid-size SUV. The QX Sport Inspiration stands out in its segment with its taut lines, muscular haunches, high visual centre of gravity, long bonnet and raked, coupe-like silhouette. Immediately recognisable as an Infiniti, the QX Sport Inspiration is inspired by Infiniti’s”Powerful Elegance” form language and bears the brand’s design hallmarks – including the signature doublearch grille, focused “human eye” headlamps, “crescent-cut” C-pillar and masculine, fluid body sculpting. Flowing lines and advanced craftsmanship characterise the spacious and beautifully appointed interior, which follows Infiniti’s “driver-centric, passenger-minded” approach to cabin architecture. The interior’s colour palette – predominantly black and white with flashes of the hide’s natural tan colour – is striking, yet harmoniously blended through careful use of line, form, and texture. “The QX Sport Inspiration is a statement of intent from Infiniti, showcasing a daring design philosophy and a demonstration of our capabilities in the midsize SUV segment.” Roland Krueger, President of Infiniti With the QX Sport Inspiration, Infiniti has started to explore the potential to expand its portfolio in the mid-size SUV market – one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing premium segments. Infiniti boasts a strong history in SUV design – the pioneering Infiniti FX45, launched in 2003, set the template for sporting SUVs over the following decade. Regarded as the world’s first mid-size multi-purpose sports vehicle, the FX is still

considered an SUV design icon today. In an increasingly crowded and popular market segment, the QX Sport Inspiration seeks to build on Infiniti’s SUV heritage and generate further excitement for the brand. “The QX Sport Inspiration comes at a time when Infiniti continues to expand its product portfolio globally – into new and popular segments. We design concept cars with true production potential, and the QX Sport Inspiration offers a vision of how Infiniti could bring something exciting and new to the mid-sized SUV segment.” Francois Bancon, Infiniti Vice President Product Strategy

Infiniti has launched a number of new models recently which adhere closely to the form and philosophy of concept models – notably the Q30, the QX30 and the Q60. All share a suite of signature design cues that help ensure each is immediately recognisable as an Infiniti.

“The QX Sport Inspiration expresses power and purpose through what we describe as its ‘proportional clarity’, with an elegance that is uniquely Infiniti. The exterior design will appeal to an artistic sensibility. It has a more flowing, natural aesthetic than that evident in traditional premium SUVs.” Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director

The QX Sport Inspiration evolves these signature design elements, including a new interpretation of Infiniti’s hallmark “crescent-cut” C-pillar, where the leading edge of the crescent is raised – echoing that of the acclaimed Q80 Inspiration Concept. Bringing added emphasis to this feature, the curvature of the C-pillars is mirrored in the lines of the rear hatch window.

Inspired by Infiniti’s Powerful Elegance form language, taut lines, short overhangs and muscular haunches endow the QX Sport Inspiration with a purposeful aura that hints at its dynamic capability. The long, smooth hood draws the eye back over the In profile the bodywork tapers down from the vehicle and the visual weight builds over the car’s Concept’s roof (1,650 mm – 64.9 in – maximum haunches to reinforce the “lean-forward” stance. height) toward a rear hatch that has been angled to accentuate the vehicle’s”lean-forward,” coupe-like The concept promises off-road versatility, aided by its raised, 230 mm (9.1 in) ground clearance, as silhouette.

well as the empowering, in-control on-road driving characteristics and cruising comfort that is expected of any Infiniti. The concept features a lean, purposeful form, with a short front overhang and wide stance – total width (excluding rear-view cameras) is 1,900 mm (74.8 in), while length is 4,600 mm (181.1 in).

FISHINGREPORT T

he weather has been warm but the wind has been so strong from the north that it has kept a lot of anglers off the water. We also had a week of very solid swells so those who fish and surf they still had a ball. When a brake in the weather comes the fishing has been good with Whiting, Squid, gummies and a few Snapper kicking around in Westernport. The Tuna season is in full swing when weather allows and some excellent fishing to be had with some larger fish being taken and the news gets better and better for our Victorian game fishery. Rob Martin from Latrobe Valley GFC writes: Check out the photo of Luke Morris’s 113 kg tuna caught out from Cape Conron at the weekend. He caught the monster on 37 kg after a 50 minute tussle with 13kg of drag on the button. Asked where and he said about 5 km south of Everard Canyon. So from Mallacoota to Cape Conron to Lakes Entrance to Portland and everywhere in between, things are looking great.

Brought to you by:

The Snowy Mountains has had some great polaroiding for brown trout. I fished the Ninety Mile beach at Loch sport without success apart from crabs stealing the bait. The beach used to fish very well for salmon and gummies but there is a trawler that works this area very hard and I wonder if this has had an impact on the Fishing along this coast as it must take all in its path. If anyone else is noticing this please email hastings@ spotonfishing.com.au. On the subject of trawlers check out stop the trawler alliance who are actively protesting to put a stop to the super trawler the Geelong star from raping our waters.

HAWKS' ROUGHEAD STEPS UP KNEE RECOVERY

H

awthorn are hopeful of regaining Jarryd Roughead ahead of schedule after the injured spearhead stepped up his AFL training program this week.

Roughead, 29, underwent surgery in February to repair a damaged posterior cruciate ligament in his knee and wasn't expected to return to the field until at least round 12.

The four-time premiership player took part in some skills sessions with the main group this week, coach Alastair Clarkson buoyed by his progress.

"He's had a really good rehab to date," Clarkson said. "Hopefully with a bit of ball work over the next couple of weeks he'll get himself right and hopefully be available to play in a month or so."

Such a timeframe could see the fullforward available to return by round 10. It's good news for the Hawks in the same week they were rocked by a knee injury to skipper Luke Hodge. The 31-year-old will miss the next four to six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair knee cartilage damage sustained during Hawthorn's 75-point loss to Greater Western Sydney. The triple-premiership skipper has already missed two matches this season after he broke a forearm in round one but Clarkson has no concerns over the veteran's ongoing durability. "Both of them are collision injuries but if they were more wear and tear injuries we'd be a bit concerned," he said. "He's been pretty sound in that regard. If he was starting to break down with a lot of soft-tissue or stress-related injuries then we'd be concerned but these are collision injuries and the way that he plays he's going to have them."

McGuire contemplated quitting Collingwood E

ddie McGuire says he briefly contemplated stepping down as Collingwood president following the AFL side's 15-point loss to Carlton. McGuire, who has been the Magpies figurehead for 18 years, was left questioning his own position afer the MCG upset. "I haven't been that laid low from the footy for a long, long time," McGuire said on Triple M on Monday. "I was completely shattered as were our supporters who were giving me their honest and frank opinion. "You question yourself ... can you go through it again? Have you got any more ideas? "I don't know if I could impact on the club."

the players, the coaches," he said. "You drive away and you have a tear in your eye. Is it frustration - what do you do?" McGuire noted he would look at quitting if he wasn't "good enough" or contributing. The 14th-placed Magpies have been one of the season's biggest disappointments, banking two wins from the opening seven rounds. Dane Swan heads a long injury list but McGuire said it was no excuse.

McGuire suggested he only rediscovered his conviction following a "Injuries have been there all the discussion with his children on Sunday. way through. Forget the injuries though, forget that, that's part and "You agonise and you are standing parcel," McGuire said. there (in the MCG rooms) and your "Every team has injuries. I am not family is around and you look across hanging my hat on that." at people who are killing themselves,

Luongo to miss Socceroos' Greece clashes

M

assimo Luongo will miss the Socceroos' double header against Greece next month with the 23-year-old midfielder's wife due to give birth to the couple's first child.

Luongo will be part of the squad for the England game at Sunderland on May 27 (0445 AEST, May 8) but he'll head straight back to London when the rest of the team return to Australia for the two games against the former European champions on June 4 in Sydney and June 7 in Melbourne.

Tomic not commited to tennis: Djokovic

B

ernard Tomic might claim to have $10 million in his bank account at age 23, but that doesn't impress world No.1 Novak Djokovic much. The Serbian tennis star, who has a close training relationship with the Australian, has accused Tomic of failing to be committed to the sport after he gave up in the final point of his first-round match against Italian Fabio Fognini at the Madrid Masters. "I've seen what he has done. It's not right and I hope he realises that," Djokovic told French news agency AFP. "I'm just hoping for him, because over the last couple of years I got to know him better and he's a good guy, he's a good person, but he's just failing to be committed to this sport as it is required." The Australian was criticised when he held his racquet by the strings and pointed the handle at the net as he failed to offer a return on match point. He then inflamed the situation further when he showed little remorse for his actions when quizzed on Wednesday. "I don't care about that match point," Tomic told News Corp Australia. "Would you care if you were 23 and worth over $10 million?"

SPORT  59

"I hate missing games but it's too soon to the baby being born for me to travel to Australia and I wouldn't have time to get back if my wife was to go into labour," Luongo told AAP. "But like everyone else I am very excited about facing England. "It's 13 years since the last time we played them so it really is probably a once-in-acareer opportunity. "Although it's only a friendly and they'll have one eye on the Euros, any match between England and Australia, whether it be rugby or cricket, is always competitive because of the great rivalry between the two countries." The Sydneysider is well settled in London despite an up and down first season at QPR and is said he is resigned to his new son or daughter being a 'Cockney' baby. Luongo has worked under three managers since his move to Loftus Road last June, but is now a regular in Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's team after being out of the side for almost two months between November and January. A groin problem sidelined him for last Monday's loss to Burnley and he is racing

to be fit for Saturday's final match of the season against Bristol City.

However, he believes he's put his early difficulties behind him and is relishing next season for both club and country with the Socceroos kikcing off the final qualifying stage for a third successive World Cup appearance against Iraq in September. "It's been eventful and I wouldn't say it has gone smoothly my first season here," Luongo said. "There's been two changes of managers, a lot of players coming in and out and I hadn't really experienced that before in my career." After Chris Ramsey was sacked last November, interim manager Neil Warnock overlooked Luongo during his five games in charge and it took time to convince Hasselbaink he was suited to the intensity of the Championship and this subsequently led to him inquiring about a possible move out on loan. "It was a really hard period for me. I spoke to the manager and he basically just said I needed to work on the defensive side of my game before he could trust me to play central midfield," he said. "It was fair enough, because at Swindon I was never asked to defend as we played all-out attack and relied on me, the wingbacks and the strikers to win games. "With Australia I play a more advanced role as well so I've really had to work on that other side of my game. "When I wasn't playing I made sure in training I wplayed the small-sided games with real intensity. I then got my chance and I think I'm now a more complete midfielder. "I just need to get my first QPR goal now."

Leilua eyes NSW Origin jumper I

Tallis rips into 'dirty player' Blair

F

ormer Brisbane captain Gorden Tallis has slammed Adam Blair, describing him as "one of the dirtiest players on the field" after his chicken wing tackle on Broncos teammate Sam Thaiday. Kiwi forward Blair is facing a one-match NRL ban after being hit with a grade one dangerous contact charge for the incident in New Zealand's 16-0 Test loss to Australia in Newcastle last Friday. Tallis claimed the tackle on Kangaroos forward Thaiday - Blair's teammate at NRL club Brisbane - was not out of character for the Kiwi forward. "I think he is one of the dirtiest players on the field and he means to do it," the former Kangaroos and Brisbane forward said. "I think it is poor what he did. "I am disappointed he wears the Broncos jersey and plays like that." Tallis was unimpressed that Blair had committed the chicken wing tackle on a club teammate. "A teammate wouldn't do it to you," he said. "If I was playing against him, if the referee did not take matters into his own hands, I would have. "Play tough, play fair. It's a man's game. "It's tough enough without getting hit in the back and twisted and all that. "I don't know why (Brisbane coach) Wayne (Bennett) keeps letting it go because he would chastise all of his players because we always wanted to play within the rules." Even with an early guilty plea, Blair will miss this Saturday's clash against Manly at Suncorp Stadium as part of the NRL double header. If Blair is unsuccessful in fighting the charge he will miss two matches. Prior to last weekend's representative fixture, Blair also missed the Broncos' 30-28 defeat by Cronulla in round nine due to suspension for dangerous contact. The judiciary found him guilty of hitting Rabbitohs halfback Adam Reynolds around the head. Brisbane have until midday on Tuesday to decide what action they will take.

n-form Canberra centre Joey Leilua wants to play State of Origin, and he's got a fan in fellow NSW hopeful Blake Austin.

the series opener on June 1 at ANZ Stadium.

Leilua has built a formidable partnership with winger Jordan Rapana at the Raiders this NRL season, combining for 10 tries including six in their round-eight thumping of Wests Tigers.

"I've just got to play consistently, stay in this form and hopefully I get picked."

The former Newcastle player admits they've developed somewhat of a `bromance', but one which hasn't yet reached the stage of Sandor Earl and Blake Ferguson - aka `Dorguson'. "I don't think we have a name but hopefully my one's first," he said on Monday.

"That was one of my goals this year, to try and get a Blues jersey," he said.

Austin said there was no doubt he should on the selection radar. "You've only got to see what Joey's been able to do in the first part of the season," he said. "Everyone in our team, if you're eligible for Origin it's definitely something that's on your radar. It's something that's closer to some than others but all you can do is perform well for the Raiders."

A Blues jumper has long been on "We enjoy each other's company off the Austin's mind, but injuries have field, so when we get out there we like disrupted his start to 2016. to play for each other and the team. He returned from a hamstring strain against last-start Penrith but missed "We've always spoken about keeping Sunday's City v Country clash, although our form up and being consistent. "When you're performing well for your Leilua pulled out of the Pacific Test citing a leg complaint but is fit to face St club, things take care of themselves," he said. George Illawarra on Thursday. "For me it's about staying on the He hopes his form will translate into paddock at the moment and performing a representative call-up ahead of well for the Raiders."

Real were without goalkeeper Keylor Navas, defender Dani Carvajal, midfielder Luka Modric and winger Gareth Bale through injury, but went ahead thanks to a thunderous low finish from Cristiano Ronaldo in the 26th minute. Karim Benzema scored the second before the break but Rodrigo Moreno, who was later sent off, pulled one back for Valencia after halftime.

Atletico took the lead at Levante in the first minute through Fernando Torres, but the relegated home side fought back, equalising Ronaldo added his second a few minutes through Victor Casadesus before Giuseppe Barca went ahead in the eighth minute when Rossi grabbed the winner in stoppage time. later before Andre Gomes scored a sumptuous consolation goal for Valencia. Alvarez stops Khan in six rounds

C

anelo Alvarez got on his knees to check on Amir Khan after knocking him unconscious with a big right hand in the sixth round of their title fight. Then he went over to check on some future business with fellow middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, who was watching ringside. "I invited him to come into the ring," Alvarez said. "Right now I will put the gloves on again." It's a fight both Golovkin and boxing fans have been waiting for to happen, though the weight could be an issue. Alvarez wants the bout to be less than the 160-pound middleweight limit, while Golovkin, who holds his own piece of the middleweight crown, vows to fight at his best weight.

"I was getting in the ring with a big guy," Khan said. "Unfortunately, I didn't make it to the end." Khan was taken to the hospital after the fight, but promoter Oscar De La Hoya said he appeared to be fine and that the move was precautionary. Khan's head snapped back when he hit the canvas and he appeared out for several minutes before regaining consciousness. Alvarez was making the first defence of the WBC title he won from Miguel Cotto in November, though the fight was fought at a catch weight of 155 pounds. The WBC has said it will take the tile from Alvarez if he does not begin talks for a fight with Golovkin within 15 days. "I don't fear anyone," Alvarez said. "We don't come to play in this sport."

"I am old school," Golovkin said just before Khan, for one, believes it's a fight that has the fight. "Middleweight is 160. I respect to happen, and soon. the sport of boxing." "I think it's time that Canelo steps in the Against Khan, Alvarez needed only one ring with Triple G," Khan said. big right hand to turn a close fight into a smashing knockout that left the British challenger out cold on his back in the middle of the ring. Struggling with Khan's speed, Alvarez unleashed a long right hand that sent Khan backwards on the canvas, where referee Kenny Bayless didn't even bother to count him out at 2:37 of the sixth round. Alvarez retained his piece of the middleweight title, but it was not without some nervous moments for his fans who packed the new T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas Strip. Khan was more than holding his own in a tactical fight when the right hand suddenly ended it. "People have known me only for my power," Alvarez said. "I have many more qualities in the ring and I showed that. I think people saw more of me." Khan, a 6-1 underdog, had vowed to use his speed to confound Alvarez and his plan seemed to be working. He fought in spurts, landing combinations and seemingly frustrating Alvarez with his movement. But a right hand that came out of nowhere landed flush against Khan's chin, and he was out before he hit the canvas.

Leicester fans partying too hard

T

he number of Leicester City fans attending local hospital emergency departments have doubled as they celebrate the side's historic Premier League title. Leicester Royal Infirmary has asked people who do not need emergency care to call for healthcare advice instead following the influx of people arriving. On Twitter the hospital wrote that it was "feeling the effect" of the team's celebrations after the Foxes beat Everton at home 3-1 on Saturday. The hospital said it had seen twice as many patients on Saturday night and Sunday morning than it normally would, with many suffering alcohol-related injuries. Following the match, thousands of fans took to the streets of the city to celebrate.

return of Alex Rance from suspension on Saturday, while Trent Cotchin is hoping he will be fit enough to face Sydney at the MCG.

The Magpies crashed to an upset loss against Carlton on Saturday, slipping to 14th on the ladder with a 2-5 record.

Cotchin underwent surgery last week on a fractured cheekbone.

Tim Broomhead (ankle) and Ben Reid (AC joint) were added to an incredibly long injury list during that 15-point loss at the MCG.

With or without their captain, the Tigers will need to be at their absolute best to topple the Swans.

Veterans Nathan Brown and Travis Cloke, both out of the side on form, are also fresh injury concerns for under-pressure coach Nathan Buckley.

The Cats survived a third-quarter fightback to beat West Coast by 44 points, and the Bulldogs won a pulsating clash with Adelaide by 15 points.

Brown tweaked his hamstring in the VFL and Cloke was a late withdrawal from the game because of a sore back.

Port Adelaide, North Melbourne and Melbourne also banked four premiership points in round seven.

Captain Scott Pendlebury is nursing sore ribs, while 2011 Brownlow medallist Dane Swan heads a list of stars on the sidelines.

The win was particularly special for North Melbourne, with stalwart Drew Petrie playing his 300th AFL game.

"It's not an excuse," Treloar told the Seven Network. As Wayne Carey questioned whether Buckley was the right man to coach the Magpies, Treloar called on players to start putting the team first. "It's just a bit of tough love," Treloar said, when asked how to fix the side's problems. "We've used 35 players or something (this season) and that's through injuries but also through form as well. "We're trying to get the players in and really trying to push them to make sure they're doing the right thing for the team." Treloar added that criticism of Buckley was unfair. "We know Bucks cops it quite a fair bit ... but we fully believe in our process," he said. Richmond and Fremantle also continued their poor starts to 2016 in round seven. Greater Western Sydney recorded an 18-point victory over the Dockers, who are yet to win a game this season. The Tigers were competitive for much of their Friday night contest against Hawthorn but faded in the final quarter to lose by 46 points. Richmond coach Damien Hardwick can at least look forward to the

Lions sweat on Rockliff injury

B

risbane captain Tom Rockliff faces another stint on the AFL sidelines because of a hamstring injury.

Rockliff limped off during Brisbane's 77-point away loss to Port Adelaide on Sunday. Coach Justin Leppitsch says the injury appears minor but he's concerned at Rockliff's ongoing nerve-related hamstring issues. "It's minor but it has happened a few times now," Leppitsch said. "And each time it has only been (sidelined) a week or two but it has been a month apart that it has happened a few times. "Obviously there's some things going on there that we need to investigate." Rockliff will have scans on Monday and is certain to miss Saturday night's home game against Collingwood. Brisbane, with just one win in seven games, expect Daniel Merrett to play against the Magpies after being a late withdrawal due to illness from the loss to Port.

Suns coach backs Ablett to bounce back

G

old Coast captain Gary Ablett isn't performing as well as he has shown he can but Suns coach Rodney Eade is backing his star midfielder to return to past glories. Ablett's form has come under a spotlight in recent weeks after the Suns were on the end of back-to-back AFL thrashings by Geelong and Melbourne. The dual Brownlow Medallist was also involved in a verbal dispute with a fan after the loss to the Demons at Metricon Stadium. Eade says the 32-year-old is playing through some minor niggles but is confident Ablett will find a way to return to the form which made him the game's premier player prior to a serious shoulder injury in 2014.

AFL life continues after 30 for stars FOOTBALL

He is in a growing group of players, including Petrie, that is proving AFL life can continue beyond 30.

Coach Brad Scott noted that Daniel Wells was determined to go back on the ground late in the game, despite a leg injury. Wells then laid two crucial smothers to help ensure they held off the Saints.
