Moomba rioters will pay, Vic premier says P

remier Daniel Andrews has warned the gang that rampaged through Melbourne's CBD robbing people and taunting police will pay a heavy price for their thuggery. The Apex gang, a loose affiliation of young men from a range of cultural backgrounds, some as young as 12, stole phones and terrorised people during Moomba celebrations on Saturday night in full view of CCTV cameras in the city.

Mr Andrews says that sort of thuggery and criminal behaviour won't be tolerated, no matter what their background and they can expect to pay for their crimes. Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp says officers are trawling through CCTV footage and more charges are expected. Earlier, police had said that two young men were arrested for being drunk, another was arrested for assaulting an officer, and a fourth was arrested after allegedly being found with a Taser.

Mr Crisp told reporters that the rioters could face charges robbery, assault or affray - that potentially would end in jail time. "We are looking at serious indictable offences with significant terms of imprisonment, anything from two to 10 years." The premier said the police will get every resource they need to smash the gangs. He said a lot of people do it tough but they don't go around terrorising the public or taunting police. "I'm not interested in these poor me stories, nobody had to behave in the way they did on Saturday night." The gang threatened on social media to return to run amok again on Sunday night, but nobody turned up. A heavy police presence was out in force in case.

Mr Crisp said Operation Tense was established last November to tackle gang activity but police had been surprised by the numbers engaging in the "Regardless of your background, violence on Saturday. most of us know right from "Saturday wrong and the behaviour on night is Saturday night was wrong," Mr a line Andrews said. in the sand "It was an evil choice and one that those involved will deeply regret."

Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp said the gang ran through the Moomba festival crowds trying to rob people, with a few mobile phones stolen. Officers were exposed to extreme levels of provocation from the gang of about 150 young men with it all clear on CCTV footage, he said.

moment for us and we will come and we will find you," Mr Crisp warned the perpetrators. Victorian police should be able to stop and question people without being accused of racial profiling in the fight against gang violence, their union says. The head of the Police Association of Victoria says police are hamstrung by fears that they will be accused of targeting certain ethnic

groups when investigating gangs such as Apex. "It's about targeting the behaviour, not the race," secretary Ron Iddles said. Mr Iddles says police officers shouldn't be wary of questioning suspected gang members. "It's got nothing to do with race, it's the activity that they actually do," he said. Premier Daniel Andrews has not ruled out introducing legislation to tackle gang violence, saying his government would provide police with the powers and resources they need. Earlier on Monday, Lord Mayor Robert Doyle urged families to spend Labour Day in the CBD for the Moomba Parade despite the riot at Federation Square.

"That sort of thuggery and criminal behaviour won't be tolerated"

Big crowds turned out for that parade, which featured Moomba King and Queen, Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne and her strapper brother Stevie Payne, waving from the Monarch Float.

Five new Apostles found off Vic coast F

ive drowned "Apostles" have been discovered under the water near Victoria's worldfamous 12 Apostles tourist attraction.

"It probably ran straight across the top of these things without managing to erode them away and knock them over," Associate Professor Kennedy said.

The find has amazed geomorphologists because it's the first time such submerged limestone stacks have been seen anywhere in the world.

The stacks were also slightly protected by an old sea cliff at the same water depth.

The five columns, around six kilometres offshore from the Apostles, have an average height of almost five metres compared with the visible stacks which average 45m. Divers have already examined the top of the drowned stacks which are 50m below sea level and collected rocks for analysis.

Stacks only occur where rock is soft enough to erode from a cliff, but at the same time hard enough to support a pillar. Like the so-called 12 Apostles - which actually now number eight - the newly discovered underwater stacks were once part of a larger limestone sea cliff dating back 60,000 years.

The discovery was made by Assoc Prof Kennedy, PhD student Rhiannon Bezore and Experts next hope to explore the Deakin University's Dr Daniel stacks with underwater cameras. Ierodiaconou during sonar mapping of the reef, which Melbourne University geomorphologist David Kennedy supports commercial fisheries. says the columns were likely The findings have been preserved because the sea rose published in the US-based so quickly after the last ice age. Mass rallies in Brazil to oust President Rousseff Demonstrators demand the impeachment of Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff during a rally where a large inflatable doll depicts former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in prison garb in Brasilia, Brazil

H

undreds of thousands of Brazilians have flooded the streets in the biggest ever protests calling for President Dilma Rousseff's removal, reflecting rising popular anger that could encourage Congress to impeach the leftist leader.

capital Brasilia, protesters marched in a nationwide call for Rousseff to step down, raising pressure on lawmakers to back ongoing impeachment proceedings against her that just a few weeks ago appeared to be doomed.

Sunday's demonstrations were the latest in a wave of anti-government rallies that lost momentum late last year but have regained strength as a sweeping corruption investigation nears Rousseff's inner circle.

Polling firm Datafolha estimated 500,000 demonstrators in Sao Paulo, the biggest rally in the city's history and more than twice the size of a major protest a year ago. The military police, which routinely issues much higher estimates, put the figure at 1.4 million at the height of the demonstration.

From the Amazon jungle city of Manaus to the business hub of Sao Paulo and the

Many blame Rousseff for sinking the economy into its worst recession in at least 25 years. Opinion polls show that more than half of Brazilians favour the impeachment of the president, re-elected for a second four-year term in 2014. Rousseff, who insists she will not quit, is the latest leftist leader in Latin America to face upheaval as a decade-long commodities boom that fuelled breakneck growth and social spending comes to an abrupt end.

Brazil guarantees security at Olympic Games

B

razil's Defence Minister Aldo Rebelo has downplayed risks of massive protests during the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, despite the country's economy and political crisis and a mushrooming scandal at state-run oil giant Petrobras. Rebelo told a news conference in Brasilia

the expected 85,000 security agents, including 38,000 members of the armed forces, will be enough to guarantee safety during the games from August 5-21.

Rebelo also said violent protests, like those during the 2013 Confederations Cup, were not likely, but "have to be confronted and

repressed if they happen".

Many Brazilians took to the streets again this weekend, with different groups either demonstrating their opposition to - or support for - President Dilma Rousseff, who faces impeachment proceedings.

Exercise reduces dementia risk - study

P

hysical exercise could reduce the risk of developing dementia, according to a medical study. Doing more activities including walking, gardening and dancing can increase brain volume and help stave off the neurodegenerative disease, research published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease has found. Participants were asked about their physical habits and had MRI scans of their brains, which were analysed to measure the structures associated with memory. Dr Doug Brown, director of research and development at Alzheimer's Society, said: "Keeping physically active is one of the best ways you can reduce your risk of dementia. "People who find the idea of running or

cycling a long way daunting will be pleased to see that other forms of activity such as dancing, gardening and hiking also appear to have benefits. "Other ways you can reduce your risk include avoiding smoking and eating a healthy, balanced diet."

He added: "This paper adds to this body of evidence by suggesting that different kinds of exercise can have a positive effect on the brain. "However, we need to dig deeper to understand how this effect on the brain influences dementia risk." The investigation, carried out by UCLA Medical Centre in California and the University of Pittsburgh, studied 876 patients aged on average 78.

Putin says Russian troops to withdraw from Syria R

ussian President Vladimir Putin has said he is instructing his armed forces to start pulling out of Syria, more than five months after he ordered the launch of a military operation that shored up his ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Putin, at a meeting in the Kremlin with his defence and foreign ministers on Monday, said Russian military forces in Syria had largely fulfilled their objectives and ordered an intensification of Russia's diplomatic efforts to broker a peace deal in the country.

But the Russian leader signalled Moscow would keep a military presence: he did not give a deadline for the completion of the withdrawal and said Russian forces would stay on at the port of Tartous and at the Hmeymim airbase in Syria's Latakia province.

"The effective work of our military created the conditions for the start of the peace process," Putin said.

"I believe that the task put before the defence ministry and Russian armed forces has, on the whole, been fulfilled. With the participation of the Russian military ... the Syrian armed forces and patriotic Syrian forces have been able to achieve a fundamental turnaround in the fight against international terrorism and have taken the initiative in almost all respects," Putin said.

Sea level rise to displace millions M

ore than 13 million Americans, including six million in Florida, could be displaced by rising sea levels this century, three times what has previously been estimated. The researchers assessed sea level change scenarios by 2100 from the US Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for coastal states along with population growth trends and projections in highrisk areas. With a sea level rise of 91 centimetres, locations forecast to house 4.2 million people would be at risk of inundation while a doubling of the rise would bring the number to 13.1 million. With densely populated coastal locales, Florida faces the greatest risk, with up to 6.06 million residents projected to be affected if sea levels rise 1.8 metres, followed by Louisiana, where 1.29 million people are at risk, and California, with one million exposed. Other states that could be heavily impacted in such a scenario include: New York (901,000 at risk), New Jersey (827,000), Virginia (476,000), Massachusetts (428,000), Texas (405,000), South Carolina (374,000) and North Carolina (298,000). "Sea level rise is the phenomenon that makes climate change a reality for millions of people worldwide," said University of Georgia geography professor Deepak Mishra, one of the researchers. The projections of the number of people who could be displaced are up to three times larger than previous estimates, said University of Georgia demographer Mathew Hauer, the study's lead author. The researchers, writing in the journal Nature Climate Change, said the the rising sea levels could see movements in the US population similar to the 20th century Great Migration of southern AfricanAmericans. That shift saw more than six million black people migrate from the rural, racist South to cities of the North, Midwest and West from the 1910s until 1970. The researchers said more than a quarter of residents of major urban centres such as Miami and New Orleans could face coastal flooding.

Encryption makes criminals keen on iPhones S

ome criminals have switched to new iPhones as their "device of choice" to commit wrongdoing due to strong encryption Apple Inc has placed on their products, three law enforcement groups said in a court filing. The groups told a judge overseeing Apple's battle with the US Justice Department on Thursday that, among other things, they were aware of "numerous instances" in which criminals who previously used so-called throwaway burner phones had switched to iPhones. They did not list a specific instance. The brief by the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association and two others also cited a jailhouse phone call intercepted by New York authorities in 2015, in which an inmate called Apple's encrypted operating system a "gift from God". The government obtained a court order last month requiring Apple to write new software to disable passcode protection and allow access to an iPhone used by one of the shooters in the December killings in San Bernardino, California.

Tech industry leaders including Google, Facebook and Microsoft and more than two dozen other companies filed legal briefs on Thursday supporting Apple. The Justice Department received support from law enforcement groups and six relatives of San Bernardino victims.

Apple has said it respects the FBI and has cooperated by turning over data in its possession.

The law enforcement groups said in their brief that Apple's stance poses a grave threat to investigations across the country. The FBI says Rizwan Farook and wife Tashfeen Malik were inspired by Islamist militants when they shot and killed 14 people on December 2 at a holiday party. The couple later died in a shootout with police and the FBI said it wants to read the data on Farook's work phone to investigate any links with militant groups.

The latest request is different, Apple says, because it requires them to crack a phone with a software tool that does not currently exist.

In a filing on Thursday, the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office said at least two 911 calls from the time of the shooting reported three assailants, not two.

Even though those reports were "not corroborated", if in fact there were three attackers it would be important to crack Apple asked that the order be vacated, open the iPhone "to identify as of yet arguing such a move would set a dangerous unknown co-conspirators", the District

'Ghostlike' octopus found in Pacific A

n underwater research craft has spotted a "ghostlike" octopus that appears to belong to a previously unknown species on the ocean floor near Hawaii, a discovery that highlights how little is known about the deep sea, a US zoologist says. The milky white creature, nicknamed "Casper the Friendly Ghost" by Twitter users, was caught on cameras mounted on the craft as it explored the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 4290 metres, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. Describing the animal as an incirrate octopod, one of two main groupings of octopods, NOAA said it was the first time an incirrate was spotted so deep in the ocean.

Cephalopods belong to a biological class that includes octopuses, squid and cuttlefish. "It's unusual to find an octopus without fins so deep in the ocean" said Vecchione, who noted that the previous depths at which an octopus without fins was found were all less than 4000m. Two scientists he has consulted "agreed that this is something unusual and is a depth record" "The deep sea is so poorly known that finding new or unexpected things happens fairly often," Vecchione said in an email, adding that he was excited by the images.

E-cigarette ban monstrous, inquiry told

A

fter 35 years of smoking and a dozen failed attempts at quitting, Angela Gordon finally kicked her addiction - but she's become a criminal in the process. The 54-year-old nurse had been smoking since she was 12, trying patches, gums, inhalers and the medication Champix to drop the habit that drove her to smoke more than 40 cigarettes a day, making her increasingly ill in the meantime. The Champix gave her suicidal thoughts and the rest were useless, until four years ago when she ordered an e-cigarette online from overseas. She hasn't picked up a cigarette since, and her doctor now considers her a former smoker. "Unfortunately my government considers me a criminal." The nicotine Ms Gordon uses in her e-cigarettes is classified as a Schedule 7 "dangerous poison" -

the sale and possession of which is illegal.

"My crime is that I quit smoking the wrong way," she told the hearing.

To make matters worse she's also become a trafficker, selling the product to a neighbour with early stage emphysema who quit smoking within two weeks of trying the e-cigarette.

Drug reform advocate Alex Wodak, director of the St Vincent's Hospital alcohol and drug service, said e-cigarettes were far safer and cheaper than cigarettes, describing them as a "significant economic boon" to smokers as well as taxpayers.

A Senate inquiry into nanny state laws is conducting a public hearing on e-cigarettes in Sydney on Wednesday, with several former smokers giving evidence that "vaping" safer e-cigarettes has helped them kick long-term smoking habits. Ms Gordon says complying with nanny state laws on e-cigarettes would mean taking her neighbour a carton of cigarettes and helping to advance her emphysema.

He dismissed claims that legalising nicotine vaping would encourage smoking. New Nicotine Alliance, a not-for-profit group that advocates nicotine products as a safe alternative to smoking, said existing laws were protecting big tobacco companies. The penalties for importing and using liquid nicotine are similar to possession of heroin in some states, they say. Legalising nicotine e-cigarettes could make smoking obsolete, save lives, earn the government more tax revenue and slash health costs. "This goes far beyond the nanny state, this is the monstrous state," president Dr Attila Danko said.

Vincent van Heerden of online business Heavenly Vapours lost a case brought against him by the WA Health Department that made the state the first

jurisdiction in the world to outlaw the sale of e-cigarettes in 2014. The court dismissed his appeal against conviction on Thursday, with Justice Robert Mazza saying no finding had been made to support van Heerden's assertion that the e-cigarettes in question were designed as "tobacco harm reduction products".

Judge spares 'creepy' WA hacker jail time A

hacker described by a Perth judge as a "creepy pest" for participating in the mass hacking of several websites, defaced with Anonymous ideology, has been spared jail time.

Former surf life saver Adam John Bennett, 42, was deemed an "immature creep", an anarchist and a hypocrite by Judge Philip McCann in the West Australian District Court on Thursday. Bennett pleaded guilty to five counts of helping hack several websites on Guy Fawkes night in 2012, with the help of a NSW teenager called "Juzzy", until their efforts were thwarted by the Australian Federal Police. The front page of non-government websites were replaced with an Anonymous manifesto that demanded all government and corporate information be publicly available.

Anonymous is a loosely associated international network of activist and hacktivist entities. Anonymous members (known as "Anons") can be distinguished in public by the wearing of stylised Guy Fawkes masks.

"There are anarchists who have a very strong sense of self-entitlement and regard the computer and the Internet as devices they can use to do whatever they like, whenever they like, no consequences," Judge McCann said. "Who are they to demand anything when they're breaking the law?"

Boeing designs selfsterilising plane loos B

oeing engineers think they have a solution for smelly, grimy plane bathrooms: ultraviolet light. The aircraft manufacturer has filed a patent for a self-cleaning lavatory that disinfects all surfaces in three seconds. The typical domestic plane has 3 bathrooms - one in first class and two at the rear. That number hasn't changed in decades even as airlines cram more rows on to planes and fill an ever-higher percentage of those seats. And with less time on the ground, those bathrooms aren't always cleaned to the fullest, despite the increased use.

Bennett also pleaded guilty to testing the security of independent stock market trading forum Hot Copper, which Judge McCann likened to peering through a window to check the doors were locked. "The best you can say about his behaviour is that he was a creepy pest," Judge McCann said. Bennett, who used the online pseudonym Lorax and had thousands of supporters on social media, also contacted companies and politicians, including senator Nick Xenophon, with messages about Internet security. Defence lawyer Darren Renton said the hacks were a form of "digital graffiti" to bring attention to the federal government's proposed data retention laws. But prosecutor Patricia Aloi likened it more to trespassing and said Bennett could be described as a nuisance. Judge McCann said jailing Bennett would make him a martyr but general deterrence was important to dissuade others from copying him. "Society is going to judge them and judge them in the way that I've judged you today, as weaklings basically who hide behind the internet and waste their lives," he said. Bennett was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years with a $1000 recognisance. He must also perform 200 hours of community service and be subject to an intensive supervision order.

While in the South African jungle, Warne became known for spilling a few stories, including some about his famous relationship with actress Hurley.

the cricketer denies.

He said his reason for going into the jungle was to show people that he's actually a decent guy.

Top Gear sorry for filming near memorial

A

host of BBC car show "Top Gear" has apologised "unreservedly" for filming stunt driving near Britain's best-known war memorial.

Chris Evans says program makers were "unwise" to film close to the Cenotaph, a stone monument to Britain's war dead near Parliament in central London. Some bystanders - including British Chancellor George Osborne - complained

after co-host Matt LeBlanc and a professional driver were seen performing "doughnuts" in the street nearby.

sticking his arm out of the car window to wave.

Richard Kemp, a retired army officer, called the stunt "gravely disrespectful." During the stunt, LeBlanc and professional rally driver Ken Block surprised a bride and groom and their wedding guests at St Paul's Cathedral near the Cenotaph as they motored past, with the former Friends star

The BBC said photos made the car appear closer to the monument than it really was, but Evans said he understood why some people were angry. He said Monday that "on behalf of the Top Gear team and Matt, I would like to apologise unreservedly for what these images seem to portray."

Food is my favourite thing ever! I enjoy eating meals out of my Kong toy – I know they say ‘don’t play with your food’, but it’s a little more fun than straight from the bowl don’t you think? INTERVIEW

Missy's Peninsula Picnic T

he Peninsula Picnic was one of the sold-out highlights of the summer calendar last year. Following on from that success, this year they have a music line-up perfectly fitting a relaxed sunny day filled with local food, craft beer and wine.

MH: I find myself being less tomboy these days. I’m really into big earrings and t-shirt dresses, still really comfortable but more feminine than I used to be.

The ethereal Ruby Whiting from Shoreham will play first with a folky style to set the vibe. Next Timberwolf will bring his soulful hipster tunes, before Powderfinger’s Darren Middleton is set to take things up a nostalgic notch. The multi-talented Kim Churchill will take picnickers into the early evening, then everyone’s favourite Melbournian Missy Higgins will headline the harvest.

MH: When you’re writing from a young age and it continues into your adulthood, it evolves alongside your own personal maturity. I feel my songs have become less introspective and a bit more focused outward. I used to rely on break-ups and dysfunctional relationships for my songs, but I’ve been finding in recent years that I’m actually more creative when I’m happy.

Missy Higgins released her debut album The Sound of White in 2004 and it instantly resonated with Australian audiences, earning her 6 ARIA awards. On a Clear Night and The Ol' Razzle Dazzle followed and she’s sold over 2 million albums and singles globally. We caught up with Missy in the lead up to the much anticipated March 20 event. PEARL: You managed to rise to fame in the 2000’s without being caught on camera in a valour tracksuit, trucker cap or low slung jeans with a g-string sticking out the top. What is the secret to your style success? MH: (laughs) I didn’t know I was a style success. I have made my fair share of fashion faux pas don’t you worry. I’ve never really followed fashion trends. I just wear what I feel suits me and reflects my personality. PEARL: How has your style evolved since then?

PEARL: How do you feel you have evolved as an artist across your career?

PEARL: I just listened to your new recording, Oh Canada, and it had me in tears. Can you tell us a bit about this song? MH: Yeah, it was inspired by the photo of Aylan Kurdy, the Syrian boy who drowned and was washed up on the beach in Turkey. I saw that photo around the same time everyone else did and I was just devastated. I wanted to write a song in dedication to his father and what he has lost and share his story. It’s so tragic what is happening to these people and I feel their stories should not be forgotten.

that you are the only person in the world that is feeling like that. But you are not alone. PEARL: You became a mum just over a year ago. What effect (if any) has this had on you creatively? MH: You don’t have nearly as much time as you used to, but you learn how to use a small amount of time to your advantage. I’ve been really focusing in on song writing in a way that I never used to when I had all the time in the world. And having a child has made me more sensitive in general. PEARL: What are you listening to at the moment? MH: David Bowie and a lot of podcasts actually. I love the Marc Maron podcast and This American Life and this one about kids called the Longest Shortest Time. PEARL: Do you have a favourite part of the creative process? MH: I love having written a song but I’m not so keen on the first stages, where you feel very unsure and vulnerable. And I love playing festivals like the Peninsula Picnic. Outdoor shows like that are some of my favourites because everyone is so relaxed and chilled and open.

PEARL: You are planning on bringing a PEARL: You have been very open about mix of old favourites and new songs to your Peninsula Picnic performance, but your experience with depression and anxiety, when to the outside world it may have you decided what you will be eating and drinking? have looked like you had everything. MH: A bit of red wine and some nice cheese If you could say something to your I reckon. It would be crazy to not drink wine younger self, what would you say? while in a wine-making region. But I won't MH: Hold on. It won’t last forever. It gets drink that much! better. When you are going through it, it feels like it is not ever going to end, and also

GANGgajang – ULURU TO CHELSEA

I

conic Australian band GANGgajang has released a brand new single, Circles In The Sand, complete with a striking music video shot in front of majestic Uluru. In doing so, they are the first band to be given permission by the traditional landowners to shoot a music performance video at the sacred site. Circles In The Sand is the Gang's first new single in more than a decade, and the first release since the passing of original member Chris Bailey in 2013. The remaining four original members Mark 'Cal' Callaghan, Graham 'Buzz' Bidstrup, Geoff Stapleton and Robbie James, along with bassist Peter Willersdorf, have returned to the studio to deliver a single that takes us back to where it all began. It reminds us once again who we are, where we live - and in doing so offers a glimpse of a different, more inclusive future.

Dani Young and Indigenous icon Warren H Williams, singing in Arrernte language. The band’s connection with Jimmy Little Foundation and Uncle Jimmy Thumbs up!, along with their work in the Mutitjulu community near Uluru, ultimately led to the shoot being approved, explains Buzz Bidstrup. “I have been travelling to and working in the community of Mutitjulu, next to Uluru for over 15 years, so I have a lot of friends there. When we wanted to make the clip the traditional owners were the first to give their permission. A big thanks to them and the administrators of the community and also to the media officer from Parks Australia who also had to give their permission for us to shoot the clip”.

GANGgajang has been part of the Australian pub music landscape since 1984; the band’s self-titled debut album dropped in 1985 and contained the hits Gimme Some Lovin’, Giver of Life, House of Cards and the perennial Sounds Of Then (This Is Australia).

The innovative Audi SQ7 TDI is revealed

W

ith 320 kW and 900 Nm of torque, the new Audi SQ7 TDI is the most powerful diesel SUV on the market. It also leads the competition in numerous other technical fields. Its newly developed 4.0 TDI engine features a world first. An electric powered compressor gives the SQ7 TDI outstanding off-the-line performance, yet it consumes on average 7.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. “Following the launch of the successful SQ5, we are now also applying the concept of a dieselengined S model to the Q7 model line,” said Dr. Stefan Knirsch, Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG for Technical Development. “The SQ7 TDI with a V8 TDI engine achieves the consumption figures of a six-cylinder. The new technology solution of the electric powered compressor in the SQ7 TDI is a worldfirst in the competitive environment, with which Audi once again underscores its claim Vorsprung durch Technik,” said Dr. Knirsch. The 4.0 TDI is an all-new engine. It combines best-in-class performance with low consumption and guarantees maximum dynamics. The V8 engine has a displacement of 3,956 cc. The two exhaust-gas turbochargers are activated selectively according to the concept of sequential charging, since exhaust gas only flows through one turbocharger at low and intermediate load. The second turbine is only activated at higher loads. An electric powered compressor (EPC) augments the work of the two turbochargers, particularly in the lower engine speed range, providing for extremely dynamic off-the-line performance. With 320 kW and 900 Nm of torque between 1,000 and 3,250 revolutions per minute, the SUV sets new benchmarks in the segment. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds; top speed is 250 km/h (governed). In the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), it consumes 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres. This corresponds to CO2 emissions of 194 grams per kilometre. The electric powered compressor is a world first in a production vehicle. This EPC strongly supports the 4.0 TDI engine when starting off and accelerating from low load for pure dynamics with no turbo lag. It is placed in the air path downstream of the intercooler, close to the engine. Because the EPC does not require any exhaust-gas energy to develop boost, it can be used at any time,

thus making it the solution for the traditional weaknesses of the classic exhaust-gas turbocharger. With this technology, turbo lag is history. The EPC provides the engine the boost energy needed for the dynamic delivery of power in less than 250 milliseconds. Driven by a compact electric motor, its compressor wheel spins up to 70,000 revolutions per minute. The 4.0 TDI thus develops its immense power with no perceptible lag, it is available immediately upon depressing the accelerator. That is a major plus, particularly when starting off. The Audi valvelift system (AVS) is also making its debut in a diesel model from Audi. The inlet and exhaust cam shafts each have two cam contours per valve. On the inlet side, one cam contour supports starting off in conjunction with the EPC, while the other optimises cylinder filling and thus power at high engine speeds. The AVS system on the exhaust side enables activation of the second exhaust-gas turbocharger. The sequential charging system controls the two exhaust-gas turbochargers so that only one turbocharger is used at low engine speeds. The second is activated additionally at higher loads and engine speeds. The customer benefits from very good torque delivery and dynamic response across the entire engine speed range. The exhaust streams from the two exhaust valves are hermetically separated, with each driving one of the two turbochargers. In the lower engine speed range, one valve per cylinder remains closed, so that the full exhaust stream flows to the active turbocharger. When load and engine speed increase, the AVS opens the second exhaust valves. This directs flow to and activates the second exhaust-gas turbocharger. The engine achieves its maximum output in this biturbo mode. The switching by the AVS enables fast and precise activation of the second exhaust-gas turbine. The power for the EPC, which reaches a maximum of 7 kW, is provided by the 48-volt electrical subsystem. The SQ7 TDI uses this higher-power electrical system, which facilitates the highpower systems electromechanical active roll stabilisation (EAWS) and EPC. To meet their high power and energy requirements, the electrical subsystem includes its own 48-volt lithium-ion battery mounted beneath the luggage compartment. The Audi SQ7 TDI will arrive in Australia before the end of 2016.

FISHINGREPORT THE KING OF THE WORLD

T

he fishing has been AMAZING in our neck of the woods with Whiting and King fish going well.

The Western Port Angling Club Whiting Challenge was a great success with fisherman from all over the country having a crack. Great to see all sponsors donating prizes for the competitors to walk home with a bag of goodies and supporting our great industry. No one knows how much behind the scenes work goes into one of these comps and to all involved give yourselves a pat on the back you did a great job. All I can say is king King KING and the very odd Mako. The King Fish are getting better each year and those targeting them are having a ball but it takes hours and hours to crack the code but once you get one you’re hooked for life. Don’t be afraid to try something different as you may come home with the goodies.

Simmons set to cash in with LeBron B en Simmons' path to the NBA, with LeBron James' sports agency guiding him, appears to have been planned out more than two years ago.

It's also a smart, lucrative signing for James.

A then 17-year-old Simmons attended the LeBron James Skills Academy in Las Vegas, an annual camp hosted by the NBA great.

He agreed to a two-year $US46.974 million contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers last year, but it gives James, not the team, the option to walk away after the first year if he's not happy.

The top 80 American high school and 30 college players attended the multi-day event in July, 2014, with the four-time NBA MVP in attendance. It was the Australian teenager who was the standout. Just minutes after Simmons' under siege Louisiana State University coach Johnny Jones announced on Sunday his team would opt out of playing in any post-season tournaments, freeing Simmons to turn professional, Yahoo! Sports reported Simmons would sign with James' Klutch Sports agency. James' agent and right-hand man Rich Paul would personally look after the 19-year-old. The report, by Yahoo! Sports' renowned NBA news breaker Adrian Wojnarwoski, was filled with other interesting tidbits, notably an "an arrangement for Klutch to represent Simmons has been in place for over a year".

James is the most powerful figure in the NBA, taking the power position with every deal he signs.

It ensures the Cavs spend big on providing James with a strong supporting cast and fire coaches, like David Blatt, when things aren't going well. James also signed a lifetime shoe deal last year with Nike worth an estimated $US500 million. Klutch will use its influence with Nike to sign Simmons to a major shoe deal, or squeeze rivals Adidas and Under Armour to over pay. Former Nike marketing executive Sonny Vaccaro, who signed a young Michael Jordan to his first sneaker deal, believes Simmons' deal will be worth more than $US100 million. Simmons interestingly tweeted a photo of a pair of Nikes recently.

Veteran gymnast Mitchell to miss Rio test

A

"She came knowing she wasn't going to get selected, but to try her fitness level out and she surprised me on her level of progress."

Mitchell had surgery on her knee last year and was not named in the Australian women's artistic gymnastics team to travel to Rio for the final qualification and test event, and the preceding Pacific Rim Championships in the US.

But first the team has to qualify.

ustralia will be without veteran gymnast Lauren Mitchell in their last-ditch bid to qualify for the Olympics as she continues her recovery from injury.

The 24-year-old spent the past week training in Canberra at a selection trial but head coach Peggy Liddick said she was not ready. "If we had another four or five weeks, she might have snuck her way on the team - she looked really good in the trial," she said on Tuesday.

Liddick said Mitchell's Olympic dream was not over, with the final team trials at the national championships in May. They need to finish inside the top four at the Olympic test event, held from April 16-18, after failing to secure a spot at the world championships last year. Leicester on course for EPL title L ittle-fancied Leicester City may be the frontrunners in the race for the English Premier League title but manager Claudio Ranieri is refusing to engage in championship talk just yet.

The Tigers beat relegation-haunted Newcastle United 1-0 on Monday to restore their five-point gap over Tottenham Hotspur and enhance their Premiership credentials. But Ranieri remained cautious, moments after ruining Rafa Benitez's debut as Newcastle manager. "No, the race is open. We are fighting (to qualify) for Europe and then maybe with four or five matches left, maybe we are fighting for the Champions League," Ranieri told Sky Sports after Shinji Okazaki's bicycle kick secured victory. "We are so strong, we think only one game at a time," added Ranieri. He has been singing the same post-match tune all season, saying earlier in the campaign that Leicester, who made an unlikely escape from relegation last term, were just looking to get enough points to stay in the top flight. Now they need a maximum of 20 points from the last eight games to clinch their first top-flight title and City are grinding out narrow wins with a consistency that has left their illustrious pursuers trailing in their wake.

"We defended very well ... and we fought. It wasn't nervy in the second half, the team were so close and compact.

"I am just concentrating now on the next game against Crystal Palace (on Saturday). Step-by-step, that is our philosophy." Captain Wes Morgan was also not buying into that idea as he echoed his manager's stance. "We had to dig in, it wasn't easy with Rafa Benitez taking over and giving them a lift," said the defender. "It wasn't a pretty game but we got the points. The games are getting ticked off, it will go to the last game. We aren't watching where we might finish." Benitez, who replaced the sacked Steve McClaren last week, said he was encouraged by the way Newcastle took the game to Leicester early on. "There were a lot of positives. We did well, you could see the commitment and the passion," Benitez told Sky Sports television. "The team showed they are convinced they can win. We cannot change this result but we can be happy in terms of the commitment of the players. "We started really well and had two good chances," the Spaniard added. "After 20 minutes Leicester started pushing and they scored and then played the game they like to play, on the counter attack.

"It wasn't the best performance from us but we showed fantastic spirit," said "Leicester work really hard, they are pushing and their (high) tempo is not Ranieri. easy for any team."

Sharapova may get less than a year: Evert

C

hris Evert says she was stunned to learn that Maria Sharapova failed a doping test, but not by the fact that there is doping in tennis, claiming that she knew players who doped during her career. Evert, an 18-times grand slam champion who retired in 1989, said the use of performanceenhancing drugs in tennis went on during her career - which was before the sport adopted current anti-doping rules - and that it likely goes on in all sports. "You'd have to have your head in the sand if you didn't at least assume that every professional sport might have some sort of performing-enhancing drugs being used," Evert told a conference call from Indian Wells, where she's doing television commentary. "Honestly, in every professional sport I think this goes on to a certain extent. In tennis it doesn't worry me as much. This went on when I was playing. "I know players on the women's tour who were using -- who were using performanceenhancing drugs and we didn't even have drug testing." Sharapova faces up to a four-year ban by the International Tennis Federation for testing positive for meldonium in January, a drug she had taken for 10 years due to health problems and which was banned on January 1. Evert feels the length of Sharapova's ban will hinge on her medical records and that the former world No.1 may only deserve to be barred for the rest of the year. "It all comes down to viewing the medical records from the doctors that took care of her 10 years ago and examining exactly what her case is," said Evert. "This drug is used for angina and severe heart issues. There's always suspicion when you hear what the drug is used for. That's why her defence needs to show medical records, and (her) dosage. "If it does come out cleanly, I would say banning her for the rest of year would be enough." Evert's ESPN colleague Patrick McEnroe said players always look for an advantage. "Players of course are going to look to get an edge, whether in how they train, or in how they eat and how they recover," the former US David Cup captain said. "Do I think it's a major problem in tennis? No, I don't. I think the testing is very tough in tennis."

Shane Watson makes opening easier: Finch

R

egardless of whether it's Aaron Finch or Usman Khawaja partnering him at the top of the order, Shane Watson looms as Australia's destroyer at the World Twenty20. National selectors have largely settled on an XI for the clash with New Zealand on Friday, when Australia start their push for elusive T20 glory in the northern Indian town of Dharamsala. The only ongoing issue is the opening combination. David Warner has been demoted to second drop, locking Finch and Khawaja in a battle for an opener's berth. Watson, who top-scored with 60 in Australia's World T20 warmup game against West Indies in Kolkata, looks certain to claim the other spot at the top. "It's nice to bat with someone like Shane, who is so brutal on an attack," Finch said of the player of the tournament at the 2012 World T20.

everyone is," Finch said. "I'm sure the selectors will make a call once they see the wicket. "I feel as though I've been playing well and if I do get an opportunity I've got all the confidence that I can help Australia win." Finch, who has logged scores of 40, two and 33 since returning from a hamstring injury, said he'd be content whichever way selectors go. "I'm sure it will be the right move for the team and the XI they think can win the game," the former T20 skipper said. Finch tops the International Cricket Council's T20 batting rankings but last month was stripped of the T20 captaincy and pitched into a scrap for his spot in the side. "I was injured when the captaincy was given to Steve. Then you hear a lot of talk while you're not playing, so it's hard to do anything about it," he said.

"But at the same time all you can do is score runs when you get an "He probably takes a lot of pressure opportunity." off his partner just by being there, without having to actually do much. Finch, who was undone by West Indies beanpole spinner Sulieman "He offers so much to everyone, Benn at Eden Gardens, suggested with bat and ball ... and tactically. the slow pitch made it an ideal When I was captain he was great tune-up for the upcoming transto bounce ideas off." Tasman clash. The fact Finch opened in Sunday's "The wickets that have been on practice match, while Khawaja show in Dharamsala, from what batted in the middle order, we've seen so far in the qualifiers, suggests the Victorian has the they've been slow and turning quite inside running. big," Finch said. Especially given Finch scored 33 "Even though they've had a lot of and shared a 76-run opening stand rain up there. with Watson. "We probably learnt a lot more "I've got no idea to be honest. I'm about ourselves today than if it was just getting prepared to play as a good wicket."

West Coast primed for AFL flag tilt ...continued from back page >>

Adam Hunter - but even better.

"I'm the first one to say we're not there yet. We're not Fremantle, Hawthorn, Sydney. We're still building towards that.

The 23-year-old is likely to play the bulk of his football in defence, but his ability to swing forward to kick quick goals is a major weapon.

"There's been teams that have gone down as quick as they've come up, so at the moment we're still establishing our presence in the AFL. "All the noise on the outside isn't getting to the players. I don't think they're just assuming it's going to happen. But time will tell."

The one player West Coast can't afford to lose to injury is Nic Naitanui. The 201cm ruckman doesn't rack up big numbers, but his one per centers and deft tap work often create scoring opportunities for his teammates.

West Coast boast arguably the best key forward in the league in Coleman medallist McGovern shapes as West Coast's new-age Josh Kennedy, while Darling and Mark

LeCras have the potential to kick 40-plus goals each. The midfield was rated slow and onedimensional two years ago. Now, there's plenty of X-factor oomph about it, especially when the likes of Andrew Gaff, Luke Shuey, Chris Masten, Jetta and Dom Sheed feed off Naitanui's ruck brilliance. All the ingredients are in place for West Coast to go all the way in 2016. But as the Eagles found out on grand final day last year, dreams can turn into nightmares within the space of 120 minutes.

Storm have ready replacement in Munster

I

f any NRL team could afford to lose Billy Slater it's one with a ready-made replacement like Cameron Munster.

The 21-year-old stepped up as the Storm's fullback last year when Slater was ruled out with a shoulder injury following Origin II in June. After only one game back Slater requires exploratory surgery this week with his shoulder failing to properly heal, again handing Munster the No.1 jersey. The 21-year-old looked right at home in their round two win over Gold Coast, after switching from the centres where he has been trying to find his feet. He was good under the high ball and scored a classy second half try by dummying and then palming off a Titans defender. Coach Craig Bellamy said Munster gained confidence as the AAMI Park game went on after spending almost no time there in the pre-season thanks to Slater's presence plus a knee injury of his own. "He missed a fair chunk of the pre-season with injury and when he has trained with us he's trained in the centres so just getting used to that fullback spot again is going to take a little bit of time," Bellamy said. "For him to change his mentality from being our centre to a fullback is obviously different but there were some really good signs in that second half." And Bellamy can rest easy that at least one of his fullbacks should be available for the Storm during the Origin campaign. Incoming Maroons coach Kevin Walters said Slater was a shoo-in if he was fit however Munster can't be considered if he isn't. He was part of a group of eight banned from Origin selection this year after breaking curfew at an Emerging Origin camp in January.

Cunnington a Roo until N 2020 AFL season

orth Melbourne have ensured star midfielder Ben Cunnington avoids free agency, signing him until the end of the 2020 AFL season.

Cunnington, who was already contracted through to the end of 2017, signed a three-year contract extension after finishing in the top two in the club's best and fairest for the past two years. "It's exciting, we were just going about the pre-season as usual knowing that I had a contract for this year and next year, when the club approached me and my manager about a new deal," the 24-year-old Cunnington said. "It's worked out really good for me. I never wanted to leave, and now I won't have to deal with all that free agency stuff (next year) and all the media and speculation that goes with it." The club also locked several of their other stars into long-term deals last year including ruckman Todd Goldstein and midfielder Jack Ziebell. Cunnington won the Kangaroos' best and fairest award in 2014 and was runner-up to Goldstein last year. "I've always been brought up to be loyal in whatever you do, and North has been very good to me," Cunnington said. "This place is a part of home for me." North Melbourne play Adelaide at Etihad Stadium in round one of the home and away season on March 26.

West Coast primed for AFL flag tilt

FOOTBALL

A

golden era looms for West Coast if they play their cards right, but coach Adam Simpson isn't counting his aces just yet.

Once the kick leaves the boot, a web of Eagles players close in - often to devastating effect.

Under the system, Sharrod Wellingham, A major case of stage fright cost the Eagles Brad Sheppard and Will Schofield enjoyed dearly in last year's grand final loss to career-best seasons, while Jeremy Hawthorn, with Jack Darling's dropped sitter McGovern announced himself as one of the in the third term summing up the day. best players in the league. But the Eagles shouldn't be too demoralised.

Now the challenge for West Coast will be to back it up.

Even getting to the decider was a massive achievement, especially after losing key defenders Eric Mackenzie and Mitch Brown earlier in the season.

Last year they were underdogs - the Cinderella story if you like.

With the team down on big-man stocks, Simpson devised what was quickly dubbed the 'Weagles Web' - a spatial defensive system that guards space and invites risky kicks from the opposition.

P REL REEAS E

There'll be no flying under the radar this season, with the Eagles already rated among of the favourites for the flag. The element of surprise is gone. But West Coast now have the chance to turn stability into their strength.

Their list is packed with talent all across the park. And importantly, most of the players in the best 22 are in the peak of their careers. The addition of Lewis Jetta will add vital speed through the middle, while ex-Lion Jack Redden adds on-ball depth. Mackenzie's return will give West Coast the flexibility to swing McGovern into attack more often. But Simpson is all too aware his team won't be handed anything on a silver platter. "If we don't improve, we'll go backwards. We understand that as a player group," Simpson says. "Are we ready to be a team that achieves sustained success?
