Sky rail angers more Melbourne residents M

elbourne residents say they were never told of the state government's plans to build a nine-metre rail bridge behind their homes. Critics have taken to Labor MP Steve Dimopoulos' Facebook page accusing him of keeping them in the dark about the proposed CranbournePakenham sky rail.

Designs for elevated rail lines along Melbourne's busiest public transport corridor were submitted to the state government in January. But there are concerns the open space beneath the overpass will create a ghetto. "You can sell this all you like, it is nothing but a cheap option," Fiona Lancaster wrote. "We will now have another concrete eye sore (sic) to look at."

Many are furious about the lack of transparency surrounding the proposal. They support removing level crossings but say there were never consulted about the sky rail. "This is an utter disgrace. We have been completely blindsided with this proposal ... we are absolutely furious," Adriana Bainbridge said. Others are worried the government will go ahead with the project despite their objections.

"Please don't confuse our desperation to have the level crossings removed with us accepting any old crap design you have decided upon," Megan O'Connor said. "Are you going to let us have any input into the decision of skyrail or has it already been made for us?," firefighter Matt Rasmussen asked. The commentators, apparently locals in Mr Dimopoulos' Oakleigh seat, are the latest group of residents to say they weren't properly consulted about a $1.6 billion plan to raise 9km of the CranbournePakenham line to remove nine level crossings. Opposition leader Matthew Guy says a sky rail is "not the kind of place you'd put back onto existing homes". Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said residents were doorknocked with information on Saturday but there had been a broader consultation process, which began last year.

Bridge protest in Melb T

wo protesters who suspended themselves from a Melbourne bridge with a banner imploring the federal government to let asylum seekers facing deportation stay in Australia are back on the ground. Katherine Woskett, 25, and Hannah Patchett, 22, began their protest on the Yarra Bend Road overpass on the Eastern Freeway alongside a "let them stay" banner.

They want to stop the imminent deportation of 267 asylum seekers, including 37 babies, from Australia to Nauru. A High Court decision on February 3 cleared the way for their return following a failed challenge against Australia's offshore processing arrangements. Ms Woskett and Ms Patchett's protest ended after about three hours when they came down on their own accord and spoke to waiting police officers, who

confiscated their banner.

"The pair left pending further inquiries," a Victoria Police spokeswoman said. It's unclear if the women will be charged but police have told them to expect a summons in the mail. The Whistleblowers, Activist and Citizens Alliance says the protesters had experience scaling high structures and did not obstruct traffic. Ms Woskett is an arborist and Ms Patchett is a rope access worker. The pair had widespread support on social media, as well as from asylum seekers in detention. "All day we have been receiving messages from refugees who are actually in detention centres," WACA spokeswoman Helen War said. "There were tears from the girls when they heard it (the protest) had reached those inside."

A lawyer for Caleb Jakobsson, 19, told the Melbourne Magistrates Court he wants to cross examine everyone who saw the collision at the shopping centre on September 23 to ascertain the potential extent of the teen's negligence. Jakobsson is accused of striking Mrs Lahane with his mini motorbike as she crossed a pedestrian crossing, then speeding away.

Defence counsel Steve Parker told the court on Thursday he had been negotiating with prosecutors but there was an issue with one of the charges.

Not all will re'joyce' at the rise of Barnaby M

alcolm Turnbull wants the next election to be about jobs, economic growth and opening up Australia to the world. But his message could get muddied as Barnaby Joyce prepares to settle in as the new Nationals leader and deputy prime minister. One of the benefits of having Warren Truss as loyal deputy has been his calm, assured, nofuss manner. Joyce's

approach to politics is the polar opposite.

political days.

As Labor frontbencher Penny Wong says: "Barnaby is very entertaining, but he is erratic and that's the last thing you want in someone who is one step away from being the prime minister and who is called upon to act as prime minister."

"Its American-style country music and possibly myself."

Depending on who you talk to, Barnaby Joyce is a loveable larrikin, a gaffe-prone buffoon or a calculating politician. Or as his Hollywood nemesis Johnny Depp put it, he's just that sweaty, big-gutted Australian who picked a fight with a pair of pampered pooches. Opinions about Joyce - or Barnaby to most Australians - are invariably divided and usually emotive.

"Barnaby is very entertaining, but he is erratic and that's the last thing you want in someone who is one step away from being the prime minister"

We'll have to get used to more of it now the Nationals have moved from the steady hand and soporific tongue of Warren Truss to the outspoken flair of Joyce.

In 2004, he went from paddocks to politics after spending time in the trenches of the country party handing out how-to-vote cards and doing their books. As a maverick Queensland senator, Joyce quickly made a name for himself with his election in 2005 securing the balance of power in the upper house for the Howard government. In his first year he crossed the floor on a business merger bill, the first government senator in 20 years to defy colleagues. That set off a pattern. He crossed the floor 27 more times. Joyce today proudly wears the achievement on his official profile: it made him "both hero and a villain" and a conviction politician. But the trend was curbed when Tony Abbott made him opposition finance spokesman. It was an ill-fated gig for Joyce - the accountant who was named after the comic book hero Barnaby the Mathematical Genius. He mixed up his billions and trillions and was rebuked by the Treasury secretary for "grossly oversimplifying" national debt. The pain of losing that post still stings for Joyce, who believes his warnings about climbing debt were proven right when the budget deficit blew out. In 2013, he swapped chambers and moved to the lower house after taking a punt for independent MP Tony Windsor's seat of New England.

Barnaby Thomas Gerard Joyce was born in 1967 in Tamworth, centre of New England in northern NSW.

It gained him the agriculture ministry and the deputy leadership of the Nationals.

One of six siblings, his earliest memories are of the family farm - sheep, cattle, mustering, drafting, shearing.

He shot to international fame after threatening to kill those dogs owned by Depp, even though, as Joyce hilariously explained, the actor had "been the sexiest man alive twice".

Later the country boy would go to the big city, packed off to boarding school at Sydney's St Ignatius College, Riverview.

While Australians had become used to the colourful Nationals deputy, it wasn't until 2015 that the world got to know that certain politician from Down Under.

Australians laughed, some shook their head in embarrassment and others applauded the minister's calculated biosecurity strategy. When he was asked about his ambitions in 2005 Joyce said he never aspired to be a minister, let alone a leader. But that's just conflicting Barnaby - a country boy who went to an elite private school, an accountant who publicly muddled up some numbers, and a man who goes for a jog for his health but sometimes has a smoke and a beer afterwards.

The nine-year-old had his Make-A-Wish foundation dream come true by leading a top secret mission to rescue a damsel in distress. NSW police lent helicopters, cars and speedboats to create the fantasy day, while Hollywood heavyweights Robert Downey Jr and Chris Hemsworth took to Twitter to support Iron Boy. Aussie actor Hemsworth, who graces the big screen as Thor, sent out a simple: "Go Dom!." Domenic's mission kicked off on Thursday morning when a PolAir helicopter landed at a park near his home in Sydney's southwest asking for the little boy's help. He was flown to Parramatta's state

After a showdown with Ultron on the Opera House steps, Iron Boy was awarded the Medal of Valour with the police commissioner thanking him for capturing "the very naughty villain". Tweets from journalists, football stars and politicians sent #ironboyau to the top trending hashtag on Twitter during the day.

North Korea satellite in orbit

back to 2006, banning arms trade and money flow that can fund the country's arms program. But a confidential UN report, seen by Reuters, concluded that North Korea continues to export ballistic-missile technology to the Middle East and ship arms and materiel to Africa in violation of UN restrictions. Missile experts say North Korea appears to have repeated its earlier success in putting an object into space, rather than broken new ground. It used a nearly identical design to the 2012 launch and is probably years away from building a long-range nuclear missile, the experts said.

Large missiles believed to be KN-08 intercontinental ballistic missiles appear during a large-scale military parade at Pyongyang's Kim Il-sung Square.

N

was not thought to be transmitting, another source added.

Sunday's launch of what North Korea said was an earth observation satellite angered the country's neighbours and the United States, which called it a missile test. It followed Pyongyang's fourth nuclear test in January.

Obama will also address North Korea's "provocations" when he hosts the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in California early next week, aides said.

orth Korea's recently launched satellite has achieved stable orbit but is not believed to have transmitted data back to Earth, US sources said of a launch that has so far failed to convince experts that Pyongyang has significantly advanced its rocket technology.

US President Barack Obama spoke with the leaders of South Korea and Japan by phone on Monday night and reassured them of Washington's support, while also calling for a strong international response to the launch, the White House said.

The United States and China, Pyongyang's "It's in a stable orbit now. They got the only major ally, are negotiating the outline tumbling under control," a US official said on of a new UN sanctions resolution that Tuesday. diplomats hope will be adopted this month. That is unlike the North's previous satellite, launched in 2012, which never stabilised, the official said. However, the new satellite

Vice Admiral James Syring, director of the US Missile Defense Agency, told reporters that North Korea's launch was "provocative, disturbing and alarming," but could not be equated with a test of an intercontinental ballistic missile. He said North Korea had never attempted to flight test the KN-08 intercontinental ballistic missile it is developing. Syring said US missile defences would be able to defend against the new North Korean missile given efforts to improve the reliability of the US system and increase in the number of ground-based US interceptors from 30 to 44. The latest North Korea rocket was based on engines taken from its massive stockpile of mid-range missiles based on Sovietera technology and electrical parts too rudimentary to be targeted by a global missile control regime, experts said.

South Korea's defence ministry believes the three-stage rocket, named Kwangmyongsong, had a potential range of 12,000km, Yonhap news agency reported, The UN Security Council has imposed sanctions against North Korea for its nuclear similar to that of the 2012 rocket and putting tests and long-range rocket launches dating the US mainland in reach.

Deadly US Highway pile-up A

deadly pile-up of dozens of vehicles on an interstate highway in freezing conditions in Pennsylvania has sent more than 40 people to hospital, authorities say. Multiple fatalities were reported following the crash on Interstate 78 in Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency spokesman Cory Angell said. State police said more than 50 vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened around 9.45am. The pile-up left tractor-trailers, box trucks and cars tangled together across three lanes of traffic and into the snow-covered median about 120km northwest of Philadelphia.

The 44-year-old Australian is likely to remain holed up in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London after both the UK and Swedish governments rejected the ruling. Ms Bishop met members of Mr Assange's legal team in London on Thursday afternoon. Bushfire prediction model developed S

cientists have taken a big step forward in planning for bushfires by developing a computer model that could help predict when and where a fire will occur. CSIRO computational informatics expert Dr Ritaban Dutta and research partners from the University of Tasmania say they used NASA satellite data on the location and intensity of fires across the world to create the prediction model.

It can detect and predict bushfires with more than 90 per cent accuracy in both grasslands and forests, two types of Australian vegetation prone to fire. The model could be used to alert authorities about likely blazes and help develop plans for early evacuation, saving lives and properties.

The research, published recently in the journal Royal Society Open Science, reveals bushfires have surged in Australia by 40 per cent since 2007. "Estimated average bushfire event frequency over the whole continent of Australia was 3284 per week in 2007, in comparison with the frequency of 5484 events per week in 2013," the paper states. Dr Dutta says the figures - equating to 469 fires a day nation-wide in 2007 and 783 a day in 2013 - included various types of fires and everything from the smallest flare-ups to major blazes. The scientists say the increased bushfire frequency reflects "a serious change in climate". Further development is needed to turn the research model into a practical system.

Cockroach inspires design of helpful robot P

eople use a lot of words to describe the reviled cockroach: disgusting, ugly, sneaky and repulsive, to name a few. But it may be time to add a surprising new one: inspirational. Scientists say they have built a small search-and-rescue robot, inspired by the ability of cockroaches to squeeze through tiny crevices, designed to navigate through rubble to find survivors after natural disasters or bombings.

"We feel strongly that cockroaches are one of nature's most revolting animals, but they can teach us important design principles," University of California, Berkeley integrative biology professor Robert Full said. Using a specially built obstacle course, the researchers observed how cockroaches scurried in less than a second through crevices smaller than a quarter of their height by compressing their jointed exoskeletons in half. Once inside the crevice, the cockroaches managed to move rapidly, at nearly 20 body lengths per second, with their legs splayed completely out to their sides. "If you scale it up to the size of a human, it would be equivalent to about 70 miles per hour (113 km/h), over twice the speed of the fastest sprinter," said Harvard University biologist Kaushik Jayaram, who worked on the research while at UC-Berkeley.

This photo shows the compressible robot, CRAM with a real cockroach. When buildings collapse in future disasters, the hero helping rescue trapped people may be a cheap robotic roach.

locomotion in order to invent robots that can manoeuvre in tough environments. For example, sidewinder rattlesnakes inspired a serpentine robot. "Nature has a library of design ideas. This diversity enables discovery. You never know where basic research will lead. The most important discoveries are often from the most unexpected creatures, some of which are disgusting," Full added.

The simple and inexpensive robot, 7 inches (18 cm) long, 3 inches (7.6 cm) tall and weighing 1.6 ounces (46 grams), was constructed using an origami-like manufacturing technique, Jayaram said. It can reorient its legs and compress its body like a cockroach to get through "vertically confined spaces," Jayaram added. The research was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Eagles to take on drug drones E

agles may soon be used to intercept and take down drones being used by crime gangs in London under a plan being considered by the Metropolitan Police. According to The Times newspaper, Met commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe has been impressed by similar tactics used by Dutch police. Drones, pilot-less aircraft which are controlled remotely, are already being used by police officers to capture footage of difficult terrain, including cliffs and woodland. But there are concerns criminal gangs are also capitalising on the opportunities presented by the new technology, including their use in the illegal drugs trade. The birds would help by taking down the aircraft, which they would consider to be prey. "As would be expected in an organisation that is transforming we take an interest in all innovative new ideas and will of course be looking at the work of the Dutch police use of eagles," a Met Police spokesman said.

Orang-utans use Xbox tech to interact

O

rang-utans could be playing computer games with Melbourne Zoo visitors by the end of the year.

Learning to adjust the air-conditioning in their exhibits could also be possible one day for the zoo's orang-utans, thanks to a world-first research project. Researchers for the first time on Tuesday introduced a human participant to work alongside the orang-utans playing interactive games. The games use interactive motion-sensing technology Microsoft Kinect - commonly used with Xbox - with images projected onto the orang-utans' exhibit and a motion-sensing camera. The University of Melbourne, Microsoft and Zoo Victoria project aims to give the orang-utans at Melbourne Zoo greater choice and control over how and when they interact with their surroundings. "What I'm really excited about is that we're not giving them rewards for interacting with this technology - they are doing it because they want to," University of Melbourne researcher Marcus Carter told AAP on Tuesday. The zoo hopes to let visitors join in the fun and eventually allow the apes more control over their exhibit. Dr Carter said the technology opened possibilities beyond just enrichment games. "The challenge comes in how do you design for an orang-utan, rather than what can you do with the technology," he said. Dr Carter said Malu, the 12-year-old Sumatran orang-utan famous for escaping the exhibit briefly last July, has shown off his problem-

Five-year-old Sumatran orang-utan Dewi interacts with images projected onto the floor of her exhibit at Melbourne Zoo. The projection operates as a touch screen, allowing her choice and control over what she sees and opens the door to allowing visitors to play computer games with the great apes. Malu's sister, five-year-old Dewi, was particularly fond of an application that has videos of her keepers. If successful, the technology may be introduced for other animals at Melbourne Zoo.

Morrison introduces 'Netflix tax' D

igital products such as books, movies and games purchased by Australians from overseas could soon attract the GST. Treasurer Scott Morrison introduced draft laws to parliament on Wednesday seeking to level the playing field between Australian and overseas business. A software subscription service provided by an Australian company now attracts the GST, but one based overseas does not. If the legislation clears parliament, overseas companies will have to collect and remit GST on products purchased by Australian consumers. The so-called Netflix tax is expected to raise $350 million over four years from July 2017, with funds going to the states and territories. "It ensures Australian businesses selling digital products and services are not disadvantaged relative to overseas businesses that sell equivalent products in Australia," Mr Morrison told parliament. The legislation is in line with OECD guidelines, which recommend consumption be taxed in the destination country of imported digital goods and services. Mr Morrison noted the model has been implemented recently by the European Union and other countries, such

as Japan and New Zealand, are developing similar rules.

WHAT THE NETFLIX TAX MEANS:

• Applies to digital products such as apps, movies, games and e-books bought from overseas. • Expected to raise $350 million over four years. • Due to start on July 1, 2017.

he actor Johnny Depp will star in a remake of the horror movie The Invisible Man by Universal Studios, the online magazine Deadline reports. The original version, which was directed by James Whale in 1993 and based on the novel of HG Wells, relates a story of a scientist who discovered a way to become invisible. Universal now seeks to reboot The Invisible Man, starring Johnny Depp with producers Alez Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, however, details regarding the director and planned release date are still unknown. The studio also announced that the remake of another classic horror movie The Mummy, which will star Tom Cruise, is in the development phase and is due for release in 2017. By starring in The Invisible Man, Johnny Depp adds one more film to his list of projects as Alice Through the Looking Glass will arrive in cinemas in May this year, while Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, is set to be released in May 2017.

Leonardo's touching Your Horoscopes tribute to his mum T

he Revenant has dominated this year's Baftas, winning three of the biggest awards including best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.

The outdoor epic was also named best film, while Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu received the best director gong. DiCaprio, 41, hailed the influence of British actors on his career, including Tom Courtenay, Gary Oldman and his co-star Tom Hardy, as he collected his award.

ARIES It could be complicated to understand your loved one’s motivations because they find their source in a hidden agenda, but it could also be your direct approach. Try to discover what needs to be clarified.

TAURUS Worries about love will come the moment you try to clear your mind. Realize that you can’t brush these worries away with a rational analysis. The sun will start shining again soon though, sooner than you think.

He also paid tribute to his mother on her birthday. The US actor, who is hoping to land his first Oscar later this month, said: "I'm absolutely honoured by this award tonight. I have to say as an actor I've been so influenced by so many British actors throughout the years.

GEMINI Live today because you don’t know what is going to happen tomorrow or next week. You want security about the future but you will only attain that if you pay enough attention to the present. Arrange what needs to be done before you end up in your dream world again. CANCER Relationships could end up in the danger zone this week. An alarm starts ringing in your mind. You are thrown off balance even though you are not a drama queen. Staying calm is the best option.

LEO Someone is paying attention to you. This could get on your nerves but it could also motivate you to dig in the past to see if you are resisting against an emotional bond because you were once misled. VIRGO It’s not going to be a strong year for love but you keep scoring in the social area so it’s not going to get boring. If you are single you are jumping from here to there. A steady relationship asks for more excitement. LIBRA You are a little bit too serious from time to time but you want to have some fun as well. It’s important to share your feelings with your loved ones because they can help you out. You are afraid that you say too much. That’s unnecessary if you carefully formulate your thoughts. SCORPIO Your doubts about love are rooted in the past more than in the present. This could suddenly surface. If you share your vulnerability with someone you trust an old wound could heal. It’s not a good time for important purchases even though there is enough money coming in.

"I want to thank one in particular British actor and that was my partner in this process - Mr Tom Hardy." Paying tribute to his mother, he added: "There's one person I have to thank. I would not be standing up here if it weren't for this person. "I didn't grow up in a life of privilege. I grew up in a very rough neighbourhood in East Los Angeles. And this woman drove me three hours a day to a different school to show me a different opportunity. It's her birthday today - mum, happy birthday, I love you very much." DiCaprio beat last year's winner Eddie Redmayne, who was nominated for The Danish Girl, as well as Michael Fassbender, Matt Damon and Bryan Cranston. Mexican director Inarritu, who won the best director Oscar in 2015 for Birdman, said he was "overwhelmed" and described his Bafta win as "a true honour". Brie Larson was named best actress for her leading role in claustrophobic drama Room. Larson was unable to attend the event because she was filming elsewhere. Collecting the award on her behalf, Room director Lenny Abrahamson said: "Brie, looking for a little bit of something light and nice to do after Room, is wrestling a large gorilla in Australia." He said she is "incredibly honoured" to receive the award and he described her as "one of the best actors of her generation".

SAGITTARIUS Your thoughts can confuse you because you can’t connect the right conclusions. Even your analytical skills are abandoning you for a moment. Your clarity will return though so postpone important discussions for a while. You think you know what you want financially and you still change your mind. CAPRICORN You are excited about an idea but you don’t want to cause a fight. If a discussion does arise it would be wise to remain silent about your opinions. That can only lead to arguments. Say as little as possible.

AQUARIUS Your emotions are tensed and that’s why you don’t need any drama. If you suppress these feelings they will return even stronger later on. Take an amused look at you reactions and watch them with healthy curiosity.

PISCES You could sink into your inner world. You want to resist this and live a breezy life but it could help you if you are not afraid to sink away a little bit in your darkness because words can’t explain everything.

Aust's Megan Gale the The winners at face of Tourism NZ the 2016 BAFTAs

A

ustralian model Megan Gale has worn many hats over the years and says her new role as Tourism NZ's ambassador for cycling will help bring her closer to her Maori heritage. Gale told AAP she was honoured to be the face of a country that links so strongly to her heritage. "I've never been a big fan of saying yes to everything and whacking my name and brand on everything. There needs to be a relevance and purpose and you need to be able to authentically connect to it as well," Gale told AAP. "I'll get to be close to my Maori heritage, which is something I had never really explored before." Gale was unveiled on Wednesday as the first ambassador to promote cycling trails in New Zealand to the Australian market. She said the new role would allow her to be more deeply connected to New Zealand and bring her closer to understanding her mother's culture. "That was the whole new interesting element to the proposal," she said. "I knew I'd be tapping into the Maori side of

things, the communities and meeting different Maori people along the way. "It was a great thing to share this with my mum as well, I have always wanted to go back to where mum is from." The Aussie model and actress hopped on the bike last October for the first time since the birth of her now 21-month-old son, experiencing the best of New Zealand's food, wine, history and culture while filming the tourism campaign. "It is completely different to everything I have done but that is why I love it so much," Gale added. According to Tourism New Zealand, Aussies make up almost half of all visitors in New Zealand and provide more than 509,000 holiday visitors per year, a number predicted to reach 1.53 million by 2021. Tourism NZ's General Manager of Australia Tony Saunders said he hopes cycling will become as popular as skiing in New Zealand. "We are confident Megan's influence and authentic connection to New Zealand will increase the awareness and preference for New Zealand as a world-class cycling destination," he said. Since 2009, the New Zealand government and local communities have invested over $NZ80 million ($A75.15 million) in developing the country's cycle trails.

Hardy voted most attractive British man

T

om Hardy has been voted the most attractive British leading man of film and TV, according to a new poll. The Mad Max: Fury Road actor edged out closest rivals Colin Firth and Orlando Bloom to take top billing in the study to find the stars who get pulses racing. The win comes ahead of this month's Oscars ceremony, which will see the Londoner battle Sylvester Stallone, Christian Bale, Mark Ruffalo and Mark Rylance for the best supporting actor award. With eight of the top 10 aged 40 and over, the survey commissioned by digital channel Drama, suggests British women favour mature men rather than fresh faces. At 38, Hardy, who played both roles in his depiction of gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray in Legend, is the youngest in the list. The oldest heartthrob is 56-year-old Game Of Thrones actor Sean Bean, ranked in 10th position. The King's Speech Oscarwinner Colin Firth, 55, took the runner-up spot in the poll, while Pirates Of The Caribbean's 39-year-old star Orlando Bloom was third.

Daniel Craig, 47, who has now clocked up four James Bond films, came fourth. He was just ahead of 43-year-old Luther actor Idris Elba, who has been rumoured as a possible successor for the 007 role when it becomes vacant. The top 10 was rounded out by Jude Law in sixth place with Broadchurch's David Tennant following. Fellow Scot Ewan McGregor was eighth and Hugh Grant ended up in ninth position. The 2,000 women surveyed were also asked about the British celebrities with the best bodies. Hardy had to settle for second place in that poll behind Bond star Craig. Elba, up for a Bafta this Sunday for his role in Beasts Of No Nation, was third. Bloom and Law were fourth and fifth respectively. Inspector George Gently's Martin Shaw was named "the ultimate silver fox". The 71-year-old vegetarian, who first found fame as Doyle in 1970s series The Professionals, was also the oldest man in the top five. The study was commissioned by the UK Drama Channel to celebrate its Leading Man Weekend.

New Harry Potter book to be released

A

new Harry Potter book will be 19 years after the Battle of Hogwarts, as released nine years after JK Rowling's Harry waved his two eldest children off to final story, The Deathly Hallows. the wizarding school.

Rowling's website Pottermore confirmed the script of the new stage play Harry Potter And The Cursed Child will be released as a book on July 31, the day after the play's world premiere and, fans will note, Harry's birthday.

The Cursed Child will pick up from that moment, focusing on Harry as a frazzled Ministry of Magic civil servant and his middle child Albus Severus, who is struggling under the weight of the family's legacy.

The Cursed Child is officially the eighth book in the Harry Potter canon and will be released in two versions: a Special Rehearsal Edition using the script performed in the play's previews, before being replaced later by a Definitive Collector's Edition.

This will be the first tale in the Harry Potter canon not to be penned by Rowling. The two-part play has been written by Jack Thorne, although it has been based on an original idea by Rowling, Thorne and the stage play's director John Tiffany.

The news will be a relief for fans worldwide who are desperate to join in the new chapter of Harry, Ron and Hermione's wizarding adventure, but unable to get tickets to the play, which at the moment has only been confirmed to show in London.

The History Boys' Jamie Parker will play Harry Potter in the new play, alongside Olivier Award-winning actress Noma Dumezweni as Hermione and Les Miserables actor Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ended Paul Thornley as Ron.

The stage play will run into 2017, which marks the 20th anniversary of the UK publication of Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone.

Before then, fans will be able to indulge themselves once more in Rowling's magical world in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, a magizoologist who accidentally unleashes a menagerie of magical animals on New York. The film is set for release in November 2016.

Gere a stranger to ex Cindy Crawford A

merican model Cindy Crawford's ex-husband Richard Gere is a stranger to her these days.

The supermodel was married to the Hollywood star between 1991 and 1995 and admits in hindsight that the age gap between the two was an issue. Crawford, who was 26 when she tied the knot with the then 42-year-old Gere, has opened up about the high-profile relationship with Marc Maron, saying she doesn't think they were "ever friends". "We're friendly, but I think it's almost like he's gone back to being, like, 'Richard Gere' again, like a stranger because we don't really see each other that much," she told Maron on his WTF podcast. "I think part of the problem in our relationship was that we were a lot of other things but I don't know if we were ever friends - like peers, because I was young, and he was Richard Gere. And then, as I started kind of growing up and growing into myself - it's hard to change the nature of a relationship once you're already in it." At the time, however, Crawford saw no reason why things wouldn't work out. "I was young," Crawford said. "I didn't think I was young, though, but I was young. I was with Richard for like six years, but I was only married for two years." Three years after her split from Gere, Crawford married Rande Gerber and they went on to have two children. They are still together and happier than ever, according to the model. "I think why Rande and I really work is that we were friends first," she said. "I never pretended to like baseball or meditation or whatever the version is."

im Morrison has become a household name over the past couple of years after appearing on The Voice, gaining immediate attention and becoming one of the top four finalists on Delta Goodrem’s team. Before Tim decided to move in a solo-music direction, he performed in the band Trial Kennedy. Once touted as the next big thing in Australian music, the band also received great praise for their debut album New Manic Art with some critics claiming it should be nominated for album of the year.

TIM MORRISON SHINES

It’s a familiar sight for fans of Tim’s previous band, combined with new fans who witnessed him on hit show, and now it’s a sight Australian music fans can once again look forward to with the release of Shine, Tim’s first solo single. Shine, the first of many solo tracks Tim has ready to be put down on tape, led this Melbourne boy into the studio of good friend and acclaimed rock producer Hadyn Buxton, who last worked with Tim on Trial Kennedy’s 2011 album Living Undesigned. Having written Shine on piano, Tim knew he wanted to play the instrument on the recording and the end result is a track that soars. There is urgency to the bristling keys of the intro that opens out into a gorgeous rock chorus propelled by that voice. It’s a voice honed through years of live performing and now Tim is giving it reign to tell his own stories. “There is something extremely exhilarating about creating music on your own,” Tim says of being a solo artist. “Of having that freedom of creative control.”

“But on the flip side you lose that joy of creating experience also taught me not to take myself as a group. You really cannot compare the two. too seriously,” Tim explains. You love them equally but they’re just different.” And Shine is only the beginning. QUANTiNO granted road licence As announced by nanoFlowcell AG, the latest scion of the QUANT model range, the QUANTiNO, has recently been licensed for road use by the SGS-TÜV Saar. Presented in early 2015 at the Geneva International Motor Show as a concept vehicle, the QUANTiNO is now the second vehicle with nanoFlowcell® technology, alongside the QUANT-E, with official permission to drive on European roads. Its unique feature is the nanoFlowcell® drive – the answer to the long-term need for alternative fuels – with which nanoFlowcell AG is paving the way for future mobility that is both clean and safe. Measuring 3.91 metres long and weighing in at 1420 kilograms, the 2+2-seater is also notable for its low-voltage electrical system. The electric drive in the QUANTiNO has a rated voltage of just 48 volts, yet generates 80 kW / 108 hp and accelerates the city sports car for everyday use from zero to 100 km/h in less than five seconds. The top speed of the nanoFlowcell® vehicle is 200 km/h. The low-voltage system in the QUANTiNO works with the nanoFlowcell® drive to form an exceptionally efficient symbiosis that promises a significantly greater potential range compared with the HV systems commonly used in electric vehicles. Furthermore, it eliminates the danger of electric shocks that can be caused by a high-voltage system in the event of an accident or when undertaking repair work to HV components. The innovative nanoFlowcell® vehicle runs with absolutely no emissions. The ionic liquid, which is harmless to the

environment and to health, is also cost-effective to produce. Under normal driving conditions, the QUANTiNO can cover a theoretical range of more than 1,000 kilometres on a single tank. Precise range figures will be determined during test driving to be conducted on European roads in 2016. Despite all its innovations, the QUANTiNO is remarkably straightforward to drive and as easy to control as a conventional electric car or a petrol-driven vehicle. It also comes with plenty of electrodynamic driving fun and a whisper-quiet soundtrack. Likewise, filling up the QUANTiNO with ionic liquid involves a process similar to that for a petrol-powered vehicle – with a hose and a refuelling nozzle. nanoFlowcell AG will present further details on the QUANTiNO and other nanoFlowcell® technology showcases in Hall 1 of this year’s Geneva International Motor Show from 1 to 13 March. Established towards the end of 2013, nanoFlowcell AG is an innovative research and development company headquartered in Lichtenstein. The focus of the research work performed by nanoFlowcell AG is on flow cell powertrain systems. Aside from further developing its QUANT range of vehicles, the company is also investigating possible applications of its nanoFlowcell® technology in other sectors and industries. To this end, two companies were founded in 2014, nanoProduction GmbH and nanoResearch SA, both wholly owned subsidiaries of nanoFlowcell AG.

FISHINGREPORT HALFWAY THROUGH FEBRUARY ALREADY!

W

e have seen some great catches of Whiting in Westernport, with some solid fish coming from south of Sandy Point. These larger fish aren’t in huge numbers but are great to catch, and just one fish can give you a memorable experience. Cam, Max and James from Swan hill called into the shop on their way through for a fishing trip and purchased some items for the new boat. Armed with their new goodies and a few hints from Amazing Bait and Tackle they ventured out into Western Port and had a blast on some big Whiting and Squid. Well done guys and we look forward to seeing you on your next trip through.

Breaking news from Jason omg (NEMO) everyone's favourite fish of the sea has been caught off Hastings Western Port bay, but it's all ok kids, under mounting public pressure his captors have released him and he was last seen happily swimming off. Keep an eye on this report, you never know where Nemo will pop up next.

Gummies have been going quite well with some nice fish being caught by those that are targeting them, with the next full moon on the way I’m sure we will see more of these great fighting and table fish. The Snapper have all but disappeared apart from a few resident Pinkies which the guys are targeting with some success, sometimes the pinkies come up as a bycatch when fishing for other species. Some of the local piers are fishing quite well with a variety of species being caught, local knowledge is the key to any successful land based fisherman. Offshore has been a little quite with not many reports of sharks at the moment, however when out wide you do come back with a good feed of Flatties and other species. Port Phillip Bay has seen some good captures of whiting in the Point Cook area, with bag limits of small to medium sized fish being obtained easily. Some good Pinkies around St.Kilda area however you’ve got to get through the undersized fish before you get the keepers, but it is still great fun with fast and furious action for all on board. The Kingies at the rip have been firing big time on the right moon phase with anglers catching several fish heading up to the 15kg+ mark. This area can be dangerous so take precautions, with so many other boats chasing in this area be courteous to your other fisho’s.

GIVEAWAY WINNER of the hasaku pack by hook em is Jason for spotting Nemo at the Hastings ramp

The A-League premiers have until Wednesday afternoon to respond to the notice, which is the first step on the road to possible sanction.

children".

ookie Chase Elliott positioned himself as one of the favourites for next Sunday's Daytona 500 after becoming the youngest driver ever to secure pole position in qualifying at Daytona International Speedway.

Victory are set to be charged with bringing the game into disrepute - the same charge handed to Western Sydney last week to great cost.

Leane didn't rule out the radical option of stadium shut-downs if active fans didn't tone down their behaviour.

Elliott, the 20-year-old son of 1988 Winston Cup Series champion Bill Elliott, soared to the top of the charts with a speed of 315.936km/hr in his No.24 Chevrolet in the final round of qualifying on Sunday for the Great American Race.

"At the moment active supporters get all sorts of privileges and rights that no other other patron that comes to A-League soccer has," he said.

Matt Kenseth qualified second after the two-round session at Daytona Beach, Florida with 315.489km/hr while twice champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. took third, with 314.919km/hr.

The Wanderers were handed a suspended three-point deduction and $50,000 fine after incendiary travelling fans unleashed more than 25 flares - as well as the more crowd-alarming detonators - last week against Victory at Etihad Stadium. While the transgressions of Victory's fans were fewer, they took place with the spotlight firmly on their behaviour. FFA chief executive David Gallop said a no tolerance policy was now in force after the incidents "cast a shadow on football". "The timing of these incidents has shocked many people given the acute focus on these issues," he said. "No one could have missed the fact that FFA, our clubs, players and coaches have been explicitly clear in our

"So maybe it's like dealing with an adolescent child, you actually start to turn those privileges off." Leane said police put themselves in "significant danger" policing A-League games, adding one of his officers was hit in the face with a half-full bottle of water. "There's still much more we can do in this space," he said. Victory coach Kevin Muscat made his view of troublemakers clear after the match, telling them they weren't part of the club. "Its not acceptable. Those individuals shouldn't come to our games any more," he said. "I sensed the reaction from the rest of the crowd ... they were fed up with individuals with their mindless acts. "It's about time we grow up."

Reigning NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Kyle Busch (314.155km/hr) and Roush Fenway Racing's Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (314.011km/hr) rounded out the top five for NASCAR's season-opening event. "This is a very, very cool day," Hendrick Motorsports' Elliott said in a trackside television interview after clocking the top speed. "I don't know that this opportunity has sunk in yet, much less sitting on the pole for the Daytona 500. "The big thing is just the team and Daytona 500 qualifying is about the team guys and the effort that they put into these cars. It was nothing special that I did, it's really just the kind of work they did this off-season to make it happen." Elliott, who became the first rookie and youngest driver to win a NASCAR national series title at the 2014 Nationwide Series championship, has taken over the No.24 Chevrolet from the recently retired Jeff Gordon, a three-time Daytona 500 winner. "Opportunities like this don't come twice and I certainly want to make the most of this one," said Elliott. "This is very, very special and a very, very cool way to start our 2016 season." Casey Mears was knocked out of the first round of qualifying by one-thousandth of a second by reigning Daytona 500 champion Joey Logano, who ended up qualifying in 12th place.

ach LaVine of the Minnesota Timberwolves overcame Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic to repeat as the NBA Slam Dunk champion in the most riveting contest of recent years.

underneath both legs before throwing it down.

"I just think that was the best contest," LaVine said. "There was some stuff that's never been done before. I don't want to get Many were saying the annual dunk contest into the greats -- Mike, they're in a different at the All-Star weekend had grown stale breath. If you really look at it as a whole, until the two 20-year-olds turned on we were doing dunks that professional gravity-defying displays of athleticism and dunkers take four or five tries to do and imagination and drew comparisons with we were doing it on the first try. It was the 1988 showdown between Michael ridiculous, man." Jordan and Dominique Wilkins. Gordon was a gracious loser. LaVine and Gordon went toe-to-toe in the first two rounds of the final round then needed a pair of tie-breakers, where the former sealed it with his fourth consecutive perfect 50 score. LaVine, a second-year NBA player, joined Michael Jordan (1987-88), Jason Richardson (2002-03) and Nate Robinson (2009-10) as the only players to win consecutive slam dunk contests. A streak of perfect scores from the two players ended when Gordon ran along the baseline en route to a jackknife dunk that earned him 47 points. LaVine sealed it on the next attempt when he soared into the air from a step inside the free-throw line and made a betweenthe-legs dunk that earned a perfect score from a panel of judges that included basketball greats Magic Johnson and Shaquille O'Neal. In his most spectacular dunk, Gordon jumped over the Magic mascot Stuff, who was standing on a hoverboard, grabbed the ball from his hand and passed it

"Zach's an incredible dunker," Gordon said. "He went through the legs from the free-throw line. That is insane. So off that dunk, you've got to give it to him. That's why the trophy's with him and not with me." Earlier, Klay Thompson knocked off defending champion and Golden State Warriors team mate Stephen Curry and Devin Booker of the Phoenix Suns to win the three-point contest after capping the final round by draining his last eight shots. Minnesota Timberwolves rookie centre Karl-Anthony Towns pulled off an upset in the Skills Challenge, an event that tests dribbling, passing, and shooting, when he became the first big man to win a competition normally dominated by guards. Towns, the top pick of the 2015 NBA Draft, dribbled through an obstacle course, sent a pass through a target, made a layup and a three-point shot quicker than Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas in the final round of an event that included front court players for the first time.

ussell Westbrook claimed a second straight MVP award as the Western Conference set an NBA All-Star record for points in a game with a 196-173 victory over the East. Westbrook scored 31 points in the annual clash in Toronto on Sunday night, where defence was conspicuous by its absence. The previous high for points in a game was 163, which had been done twice previously. The West surpassed that with about eight minutes to play in the game. Heading into retirement after the season, Kobe Bryant scored 10 points on 4-for-11 shooting while playing in his 18th and final All-Star game. "I just want to thank you guys for all of your support for all these years," Bryant told the Toronto crowd and a global television audience. "I've been extremely fortunate to be able to play the game that I love and be in the NBA for more than half my life. "It's a thrill to be here in this All-Star Game so thank you for voting me in. I get a chance to be around these young players here, who when I first started playing most of them were my kids' age now. "It feels so good to be able to speak to them about the game and to be able to share some of the knowledge that I have learned throughout my career to them so that they can carry on the tradition of the NBA and hopefully play 20 years themselves." Chris Paul had 14 points and 16 assists for the West. Bryant left the game to a standing ovation with 1:06 to play. Indiana Pacers forward Paul George led all scorers with 41 points for the East, one off Wilt Chamberlain's single-game record set in 1962.

Look ahead to the AFL NAB Challenge T he state of play at the 18 AFL clubs ahead of the NAB Challenge beginning this week

ADELAIDE

After enduring a tumultuous 2015, the Crows enter a new era under Don Pyke, who has served a long coaching apprenticeship. Ex-Blue Troy Menzel shapes as an interesting addition. But who will fill the giant hole left by the departed Patrick Dangerfield? BRISBANE LIONS Another off-season of major personnel change at Brisbane. Ryan Bastinac, Josh Walker and Tom Bell will be expected to play more pivotal roles with the young Lions than they did at their previous clubs. Convincing ruckman Stefan Martin to stick around was a coup for coach Justin Leppitsch. CARLTON How long will new coach Brendon Bolton be able to sustain his sunny demeanour? The pre-season comp will allow a first look at top-end draftees Jacob Weitering, Harry McKay and Charlie Curnow. Big Matthew Krezuer has been a pre-season standout. COLLINGWOOD The expectations on marquee recruit Adam Treloar will be huge. James Aish has plenty to prove after being granted his wish for a departure pass from Brisbane. And how is Darcy Moore progressing as the Magpies continue the search for a key-forward foil for Travis Cloke? ESSENDON Where to start? How does new coach John Worsfold go about replacing the likes of Jobe Watson, Michael Hurley and Dyson Heppell? What are fill-ins such as James Kelly, Ryan Crowley and Mathew Stokes going to be able to offer, especially early in the season? Can Matthew Leuenberger grasp the mantle as No.1 ruckman at his second club? FREMANTLE Much-hyped recruit Harley Bennell is managing a calf injury and will not be rushed into action. According to experienced track watchers, the star of the Dockers' preseason campaign is the dynamic Michael Walters, who has been flying. GEELONG Cats fans are salivating over the prospect of Patrick Dangerfield starting in the centre square alongside skipper Joel Selwood. Lachie Henderson is another big-name

local lured home by Chris Scott. And Daniel Menzel will finally start a season with his focus firmly on football rather than his oftinjured knees. GOLD COAST Surely Rodney Eade and the Suns can expect a change of luck after the side was cruelled by injuries in 2015. Skipper Gary Ablett (foot strain) is unlikely to be sighted until the final round of the NAB Challenge. GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY Geelong's triple-premiership hero Steve Johnson was the big-name off-season arrival. Another former Cat in Dawson Simpson will be hoping to make a much bigger impact at his second club, who know they need someone to provide solid ruck back-up for Shane Mumford. HAWTHORN Tim O'Brien and James Sicily have been flagged as the men most likely to fill the big boots of key forward Jarry Roughead, who will miss at least half a season with a knee injury. The fullback slot is also vacant following the retirement of Brian Lake. MELBOURNE Key forward Chris Dawes is an unlikely starter in the pre-season competition due to a calf injury, giving Cam Pedersen and Sam Frost the chance to stake a claim to partner Jesse Hogan in attack. Forgotten man Jack Trengove (foot) is also inching closer to a return, having not played senior footy since early 2014. NORTH MELBOURNE After two years ruined by foot and Achilles tendon injuries, Daniel Wells is fully fit and raring to go. It's the best possible news for coach Brad Scott, with genuine midfield speed being one of the few missing pieces of the puzzle at Arden Street. PORT ADELAIDE Outside Essendon, it is Port who have been hardest hit by the Court of Arbitration

for Sport ruling, with ex-Bombers Angus Monfries and Paddy Ryder banned for the year. Ex-Sun Charlie Dixon and spearhead Jay Schulz will both miss the start of the Power's's pre-season campaign. RICHMOND Brett Deledio won't be sighted until late in the NAB Challenge as he manages an ongoing Achilles issue, while the club are also taking no risks with ex-Blue Chris Yarran. But in welcome news for coach Damien Hardwick, the luckless Reece Conca has put a long run of injury problems behind him. ST KILDA A sore back will keep star midfielder David Armitage out of the Saints' opening NAB Challenge clash against North Melbourne. There will be plenty of focus this year on Paddy McCartin, who enters his second season as the heir apparent to Nick Riewoldt as the Saints' goalkicking saviour. Jake Carlisle's season-long doping suspension is a significant blow. SYDNEY After missing last season's finals series to deal with a mental issue, Lance Franklin looked a rejuvenated figure in last week's intra-club match. Midfield tyros Luke Parker and Kieren Jack have recovered from serious injuries. WEST COAST Lewis Jetta and Jack Redden are the bigname arrivals as the Eagles look to build on their second-placed finish in 2015. Ruckman Jonathan Giles will also be eager to mark a mark at his third AFL club. WESTERN BULLDOGS Twelve months after doing an ACL in the opening round of the 2015 pre-season comp, star midfielder Tom Liberatore is back and firing. Much more will be expected of multi-million dollar man Tom Boyd, whose first year at the kennel in 2015 was nothing special.

S

teve Waugh says he was only fulfilling his duties as Australian cricket captain by making the tough decision to axe Shane Warne from a 1999 Test match in the West Indies. Warne this week labelled Waugh the most selfish cricketer he had played with, saying his omission from the 1999 Test was a major factor. "I don't like Steve Waugh for a lot of other reasons, but that was the reason," Warne said on Network Ten's I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! television show.

Waugh opens up on Warne axing

Waugh says the decision to drop Warne was tough but part of his role as Australian captain. "To be fair, not only Shane, it wasn't easy to tell them they were dropped," Waugh told Triple M in Adelaide on Friday. "It wasn't easy telling Adam Dale he was dropped for a Test match or Greg Blewett. There were a number of players I had to tell they weren't playing, Andy Bichel. "As a captain that is the hardest thing to do. But it's also why you're captain, because people expect you to make the tough decisions for the benefit of the team. "You have got to do that at times and you have got to be prepared not to be liked by everyone." Waugh said as a captain, following gut-feel was important. "I guess the main thing as a captain and leader, as long as people respect your decision that is all you can ask," he said. "You have got to take a bit of a risk sometimes. It's not always the obvious thing to do. "Sometimes it can be gut-feel, it can be based on facts ... at the end of the day you are a leader because people expect you to make a choice."

Eels confident in NRL salary cap probe

P

arramatta are confident they are in the process of sufficiently overhauling their front office, following governance failures, in order to avoid sanction from the NRL over salary cap breaches.

The embattled club will learn their fate on February 29, just three days before they host the season opener against Brisbane.

The Eels are facing the loss of four competition points ahead of the new NRL season, due to cap breaches relating to 2015.

"But we are not doing this just for the report and just to tick a box.

However in his first comments on the saga since taking over as new Parramatta chief executive on January 17, John Boulos believes the club is doing enough to convince the game's governing body not to take that dramatic step. "I am confident we will do everything in our power to ensure it doesn't happen," Boulos told AAP on Monday at the launch of the club's Indigenous jersey for 2016. "We are working in good faith with the NRL, we are working very closely with them, to implement the recommendations of the governance review. "I have no doubt as a club we are entirely committed to that."

"It is still being worked through at the moment," Boulos said.

"We are doing it because it is something that is meaningful, it is something that is important, it is something that we want to embrace and it is something that is going to make our club better." The new season has brought with it much expectation and positivity at the Eels after the key acquisitions of Kieran Foran, Michael Jennings and Beau Scott was followed up by title success at the NRL Auckland Nines. Boulos said he had been conscious not to let the off field drama affect the season preparation of coach Brad Arthur and his team. "From a football pointy of view we try and shield them from it as much as we can," Boulos said.

"We saw good progress in the Nines, it was a pre-season competition but it was a good start to the year and it gives us some energy to build on.

"We are not silly enough to think that it correlates to success during the season proper because it is a totally different game and competition but the fact is it gives us momentum to start the season with."

Malthouse up for mentoring banned Dons 34 FOOTBALL

L

egendary AFL coach Mick Malthouse says he has a proposal to coach the banned past and present Essendon players through their year-long suspension away from their clubs. The banned players, found guilty of antidoping violations in 2012, will miss the entire 2016 season and aren't allowed to train at their clubs.

He and long-time fitness offsider David Buttifant have custom-designed a program to ensure the suspended footballers can hit the ground running when their bans expire. "It can happen if you get the right people in place," Malthouse told Melbourne radio station SEN.

"The penalty was almost a lifetime AFL penalty, he just didn't cope." Malthouse - who has coached more games of VFL/AFL football than anyone else said he needed approval from a range of stakeholders to get the go-ahead.

"It has to be a gathering of people from the Malthouse cited Ahmed Saad as case study PA, Essendon if they're allowed to, playerin the dangers of being cast adrift outside managers and players," he said.
