Aussies threaten class action against VW M

ore than 1,000 Australians are lining up to sue Volkswagen over its global emission-rigging scandal. And the number could soon be much higher.

Volkswagen says more than 90,000 Australians have diesel vehicles fitted with the engine software that cheats pollution tests. Maurice Blackburn lawyers plan to lodge a class action against the auto giant in the Federal Court in Sydney in coming weeks. The law firm's class actions principal Damian Scattini said the scandal affects the resale value of the vehicles and car owners might lose thousands of dollars in increased running costs. "Some people are very furious," he said. "This will go down as a classic case study in how to create a crisis and then go about mismanaging the fall out from that. "It is unbelievable how badly Volkswagen has handled this." Volkswagen has not yet indicated it has any plans to compensate customers, instead appealing to them to wait for its German head office to produce a technical solution. "Volkswagen currently wants its customers to suck up and accept that they'll do nothing about it," Mr Scattini said. "Well that's not good enough and we won't let them get away with it." There are numerous lawsuits in the US and across Europe against Volkswagen over the scam involving more than 11 million diesel cars equipped with software that switches engines to low-emissions mode during tests. Livid car owners have taken to social media to complain. "I bought a Golf on the basis that it was 'clean diesel' technology. I feel I was deceived and will never purchase a VW again," motorist Bill Grant wrote on the Volkswagen Australia Facebook page. NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury wants the federal government to have more powers to step in and facilitate a recall rather than leaving it up to the carmaker.

"Some people are very furious" "It is fundamental through this process now that the consumer be put first and that's both through the recall stage and whatever compensation process may have to be put into place here because people were duped," he told AAP. Minister for Territories, Local Government and Major Projects Paul Fletcher said he expects Audi and Volkswagen will continue to work to ensure appropriate steps are taken to rectify the issue. Meanwhile, Volkswagen faces multi-million dollar fines if an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission finds the carmaker breached consumer and safety standards. Volkswagen plans to recall and refit up to five million affected vehicles worldwide, with the British arm of

the car maker planning to recall 1.2 million cars. It is already facing $US18 million in regulatory fines in the US. Affected vehicles include diesel VW cars and vans, Audis and Skoda cars made between 2009 and 2015.

Parties bicker over latest NBN plan T

he government and Labor are trading blows over the latest rollout plan for the national broadband network.

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield insists the three-year construction schedule is a "concrete, realistic, achievable" plan to meet a full rollout deadline of 2020. His opposition counterpart Jason Clare is unconvinced, noting most of the rollout is scheduled to take place after the next federal election and would require an exponential increase in delivery. "The NBN rollout plan (is) a ramp Evel Knievel couldn't jump," he said in a statement. The latest plan, released by NBN on Friday, forecasts construction will start to connect close to 7.5 million premises over the next three years.

The NBN was now "cranking up and into gear" as opposed to Labor's time in government when the rollout was so "catastrophically mismanaged".

The rollout will use existing cable TV networks in many areas following successful trials in four suburbs across Queensland and NSW this year.

Mr Turnbull cited figures showing 1.36 million customers were able to get the high-speed broadband service now with construction to connect almost 700,000 premises under way.

Victoria monitors bushfire arson threat A

rson is a looming threat facing Victoria as firefighters scale up their response to a dangerous bushfire season that began earlier than expected.

Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said authorities were monitoring bushfire risks such as hot and windy conditions, and the threat of arson as crews prepared for a long fire season. “Arson is one of the key issues that we will deal with,” he told reporters on Thursday. Victorian police were monitoring known arsonists, given the fireprone conditions, Mr Lapsley said.

Residents affected by the Lancefield bushfire have raised concerns about the patchy phone coverage and their ability to cope in emergencies when they need to get warnings.

Stephen Tinker, Telstra's area manager for central Victoria, told ABC on Tuesday he is well aware of the problem but fixing it would require "quite a bit of investment" in mobile phone base stations. Environment Minister Greg Hunt says Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has a clear intention to fix congestion. "Nothing goes more to quality of life - after public safety - than the massive congestion problems that Melbourne faces," he told 3AW on Monday. Mr Hunt also listed the Melbourne Metro rail tunnel, the M80 ring road extension and the dumped East West Link as projects the city needs. Mr Andrews said there was a "fresh start" with Mr Turnbull in the top job, after a year of fighting with Tony Abbott over infrastructure funding. "Isn't it absolutely refreshing that we can have not an argument, but have a bit of a discussion, a debate and a process around the share of funding?" Mr Andrews told reporters.

Education system failing business "You don't need a degree to run a small business"

Y

ou don't need a university degree to run a small business but neither does the education system provide the skills that are required. Those are the findings in a new survey of small and medium enterprises by business solutions provider MYOB. It mirrors the views of business leaders at last week's meeting with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who want a better alignment of vocational and university education with the rapidly changing needs of business. "There is much more we can do to support innovation across the country," MYOB's chief technology officer Simon RaikAllen says. Fifty-eight per cent of

respondents in the survey of 400 SMEs said the education system isn't providing the skills students needed to be entrepreneurial and innovative in their future, while two-thirds said it doesn't give the know-how to run a business. Over three-quarters said that you don't need a degree to run a small business, while 43 per cent of owners felt their own education had not helped them running the firm. "Our business people are learning on the job," Mr RaikAllen said, releasing the survey on Thursday. "We could fast-track our entrepreneurship if we started teaching more of the skills needed in schools, TAFE, private colleges and universities."

New warning over Antarctic ice melt N

ew climate change research shows melting Antarctic ice could increase rising sea levels more than previously calculated - starkly emphasising the need to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The study by Australian and New Zealand scientists has been published in this week's Nature journal. Using state-of-the-art computer modelling, the scientists found the only scenario that didn't generate large-scale loss of Antarctic ice was when world emissions were significantly reduced beyond 2020, says lead author, Victoria University's Nicholas Golledge. The 2013 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report predicted that the Antarctic ice sheet would contribute at most only 5cm to global sea-level rise by the end of this century. But in 2013 there was insufficient knowledge about how the ice sheet might respond to future warming. "Our new models include processes that take place when ice sheets come into contact with the ocean," Dr Golledge said.

40 centimetres."

Dr Golledge said atmosphere warming would need to be kept under 2C to avoid the loss of the ice shelves. "Missing the 2C target will result in an Antarctic contribution to sea-level rise that could be up to 10 metres higher than today," Dr Golledge said.

Without significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over the next couple of decades, the widespread melting of the Antarctic ice sheet could become irreversible. The United Nations Climate Change Conference will be held in Paris later this year, which aims to get worldwide agreement on limiting climate change effects. Co-author Tim Naish says in order to restrict global warming to 2C the Paris meeting must agree to reduce global CO2 emissions to zero before the end of the century.

Dr Golledge said the choice appeared to be mitigate now for the benefit of future generations "If we lose these ice shelves, or adapt to a world in which the Antarctic contribution to sea- shorelines are significantly relevel rise by 2100 will be nearer drawn.

Key Alzheimer's protein identified A

protein that appears to be key in the development of Alzheimer's disease has been identified by scientists who say the discovery could provide a new drug target for dementia.

More than 46 million people worldwide suffer from dementia

Known as GPR3, the protein is believed to play an important role in reducing the buildup of amyloid plaques in the brain, a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, said the findings in Wednesday's edition of Science Translational Medicine. Research on mice with four different varieties of dementia showed that genetically deleting GPR3 resulted in cognitive improvement and reduced signs of disease in the brain. But since mouse models of Alzheimer's disease are not directly equivalent to the human condition, more research is needed to determine if the same process could work in people. Researchers are encouraged by the fact that about half of all drugs currently on the market target this type of receptor, known as a G protein-coupled receptor. Also, autopsies on the brains of people with Alzheimer's have shown that a subset of patients show high levels of GPR3, and that these levels were associated with advancement of the disease.

Craigie said the project will add 3000 jobs during construction, with 1000 permanent positions following on completion.

British architects Wilkinson Eyre won the contest to design the hotel, which will feature 388 rooms and a publicly accessible restaurant, lounge and garden terrace at the top of its 317-metre glass tower.

The proposed Queensbridge Hotel Tower is subject to planning approval, financing and the finalisation of long-form joint venture documentation between Crown and partner Schiavello Group.

"Wilkinson Eyre have designed a beautiful and elegant building that is destined to be an important addition to the Melbourne skyline," Mr Packer said in a statement on Monday.

The Herald Sun reports the 90-storey tower will cost $1.5 billion.

US dentist avoids charges over lion hunt Z

imbabwe has abandoned its bid to press charges against a US dentist who killed Cecil the lion, saying his papers "were in order" and that he did not know he was committing any offence. The black-maned lion was shot dead with a powerful bow and arrow in July by US trophy hunter Walter Palmer in a hunt that provoked worldwide outrage. Palmer paid $US55,000 ($A75,095.58) to shoot the lion on an expedition led by professional Zimbabwean hunter Theo Bronkhorst. The hunt provoked a storm of criticism after it emerged that Cecil was a well-known attraction among visitors to the Hwange National Park and was wearing a tracking collar as part of an Oxford University research project. But a Zimbabwean government minister on Monday said they would not pursue any legal proceedings against Palmer.

"The documents were there ... The problem now remains internal." The dentist was welcome to return to Zimbabwe but "not for hunting", she added. Muchinguri had previously called for Palmer to be extradited from the US. Palmer was hounded on social media over the killing and, after demonstrations outside his dental practice in Minnesota, went into hiding for weeks. He later apologised for killing Cecil, a 13-year-old male renowned for his distinctive black mane. Palmer said he believed it was a legal hunt and appeared to blame Bronkhorst for misleading him. Muchinguri said Honest Ndlovu, the local landowner, did not have a hunting quota for a lion but that the rural district council covering the land did have one.

The boy was rushed to a hospital, where he died later that night. Police subsequently arrested the boys' father, 25-year-old Michael Santiago, on a felony child endangerment charge. During a court hearing on Sunday, Assistant State's Attorney Joseph DiBella said Santiago bought the gun off the street, kept it "wrapped in pyjama pants on top of the refrigerator" and even showed the boy where the gun was. "It's real simple...If that gun is not in the house that kid is alive today"

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said the case tragically illustrates a point he has been making for years about how a major cause of much of Chicago's violent crime is the flood of illegal guns into the city.

"It's real simple," McCarthy said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Sunday.

"If that gun is not in the house that kid is alive today. We see this happen over and over and over again." McCarthy says his officers routinely seize many times more illegal guns than any city in the nation, including the larger cities of New York and Los Angeles. The department has seized more than 5,500 illegal weapons thus far in 2015. Chicago also has more homicides than any city in the nation, and the number this year has climbed, with department statistics showing there were 370 homicides as of October 4, compared to 306 for the same period last year. The number of shooting incidents also has climbed during the same period to 1,870 from 1,581 last year.

RBA confident economy will stay strong A

senior Reserve Bank official has given an upbeat assessment of the Australian economy, confident that it is strong enough to resist a significant downturn.

Reserve Bank of Australia deputy governor Philip Lowe said while no one can be sure about what the future holds, the economy is flexible to adapt to the changing world. "My central message is that these fundamentals are strong and that they provide us with the basis to be optimistic about the future," he told a business conference on Tuesday.

Dr Lowe said Australia's links with Asia will also keep the economy strong, not just through mining and resources exports but also though agriculture. "As average incomes in Asia grow, so too does the demand for protein," he said.

"With our large tracts of agricultural land and the expertise built up from using that land over many decades, Australia has obvious advantages here."

"The weaker currency makes locally produced good and services more competitive" Dr Lowe said the weaker dollar has helped the economy deal with global shocks, such as the recent plunge in commodity prices. "The depreciation over the past couple of years is playing an important role in helping the economy adjust to the wind-down of the boom in mining investment," he said.

Mr Lowe said while the focus in recent years has been on mining exports to China, he expects other exports to other Asian nations to play a greater part in strengthening the Australian economy. "There are also significant opportunities elsewhere, including in Indonesia and India with their very large populations," he said.

Abbott to pay for smashed table F

ormer prime minister Tony Abbott says he will pay for a marble table that was damaged during a party he hosted on the night he was dumped as leader.

- on September 15 and alerted the office in charge of asset management.

Revellers partied so hard as they farewelled Mr Abbott, they allegedly broke the table as they danced on it in Parliament House on the night of September 14.

Department of Parliamentary Services assistant secretary, John Ryan, said staff were not allowed access to the anteroom until September 18, despite a number of requests.

On Monday evening, Mr Abbott issued a statement taking responsibility for the smashed table and promising to cover the cost. "On the night of the leadership change I hosted drinks in the cabinet ante-room for staff and colleagues," he said.

"Quite a party," Labor senator Penny Wong said.

While staff were allowed to remove the table for repairs, they weren't allowed to make a further inspection of other possible damage, Mr Ryan said.

"Persons standing or dancing up on it"

"During this event a coffee table was damaged. "I have asked my office to have the Department of Parliamentary Services invoice me for the value of the table. "It was my event so I take responsibility for it." A Senate estimates hearing was told on Monday cleaners had found broken pieces of the $590 table - an original piece of furniture bought for the parliament in 1988

Senator Wong read out an email from Mr Ryan to Department of Parliamentary Services first assistant secretary, Rob Barnes, in which Mr Ryan suggested the table was damaged by "persons standing or dancing up on it". "More pieces have since been seen in the ministerial offices," the email read. While one initial quote for repairs to the table put the cost at $1000, other quotes were much higher. Mr Ryan said no investigation had been undertaken into how the damage occurred.

Back to the Future: Truth is stranger W

hen Marty McFly and "Doc" Brown burst into 2015 in a time machine, straight from the year 1985, they encounter a brave new world of garbage-fuelled flying cars, self-tying shoes and robot waiters. For audiences in 1989, when CDs were the height of hi-tech, science fiction comedy Back to the Future II portrayed an exciting world 30 years down the line in which people would flit around on gravity-defying hoverboards, sporting self-drying, autoadjusting clothes, and dogs are walked by drones. Disappointingly, many of the gadgets anticipated by script-writers who dropped the movie's oddball pair - and their hotrod DeLorean time machine - into the "future" on October 21, 2015 have failed to materialise. Yet in many ways, the 2015 of reality is even more radically altered from what filmmakers Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale could have imagined, say futurists who study and project trends. What we can do with smartphones now was almost inconceivable then. "Their capabilities today, including access to all information on the planet, would have absolutely astounded even most futurists of 30 years ago... who didn't imagine a phone would be for anything other than speaking and texting," Sydney-based futurist Ross Dawson told AFP. "Back when the movie was made, people looking at the reality of today would find it quite mind-boggling." Technology we would now struggle without - such as Google and Wikipedia, social networking sites Facebook and Twitter, smartphone GPS, and online shopping, would have been hard to envisage when the movie came out. In the film, Marty, played by a young Michael J Fox, receives a dismissal notice at home by fax - a now-clunky technology that seemed cutting-edge in the 1980s. The internet revolution was lurking just around the corner, and the world had yet to receive email. In 1985, only about a quarter of US households had a microwave oven, and videocassette recorders (VCRs) were the must-have viewing technology. Today you can buy a home 3-D printer on the internet for a few hundred dollars, which can produce anything from a gun

that squirts water to one that shoots bullets. We can "download" songs and "stream" films - terms that did not even exist in 1985. We can edit the human genome to fix disease-causing DNA, we have grown hamburger "meat" from cow muscle cells, and we have placed a robot probe on a comet hundreds of millions of kilometres from Earth. "Humans very quickly get used to innovations and take them for granted," said Dawson, founder of the Future Exploration Network, which offers scenario planning services. Still, the film did get some things right. We do have flat screens, live video-calling, tablet computers, and portable up-to-theminute weather apps. Though not yet in full swing, we also have biometric technology for paying bills or

unlocking doors with a fingerprint, and off-the-shelf smart glasses similar to those worn by Marty's offspring. "It was actually quite visionary of them to get so many things right," said Thomas Frey of the DaVinci Institute, a futurist thinktank. "They depicted it in kind of a comical, goofy way actually, but I think they did quite a phenomenal job back then of anticipating things that must have seemed fairly ludicrous at the time." Some predictions were ahead of their time. Thirty years ago, most futurists would have given flying cars by 2015 "greater than 5050 odds," independent futurist Jack Uldrich told AFP by telephone from Minneapolis. "There are some companies that are working on flying cars, but what they don't have is that take-off (vertical) lift," as demonstrated by Doc's DeLorean. Innovators have drawn inspiration from the movie: California-based firm Hendo is creating a hoverboard which works on magnetic repulsion. Shoemaker Nike is working on sneakers with self-tightening "power laces" like the ones Marty wore. Sci-fi has influenced scientific advancement through the ages, but the task may become harder as technological development accelerates exponentially. Will humans be teleporting, travelling in time, or discover the secret to eternal life by 2045? Who knows, the experts say. "One of the things which we could very easily see in 30 years is... humanoids and other robots just being a complete part of our environment," Dawson said. Also likely is "people using their thoughts to control the world around them, even to use their thoughts to communicate directly with other people." Dawson foresees a future not with flying cars per se, but rather self-driving pods -- a cheaper and safer alternative. One thing that the movie got wildly wrong: lawyers have not been "abolished". "I think a lot of people wished that had come true," quipped Uldrich - but then who will settle disputes between humans and robots in the future?

Volvo Cars Unveils Global Electrification Strategy

"Battery technology has improved, costs are going down"

V

olvo Cars has announced one of the automotive industry’s most comprehensive electrification strategies in which plug-in hybrids will be introduced across its entire range. It will develop an entirely new range of electrified smaller cars and build a fully electric car for sale by 2019. As part of this new strategy, the Swedish car company said it expects electrified vehicles to account for up to 10 per cent of total car sales in the medium term. The first element of the new electrification strategy involves the introduction of plug-in hybrid versions of its 90 series and 60 series larger cars, based on the company’s new Scalable Product Architecture. This process will get underway in Australia in Q1 2016 with the launch of the T8 Twin Engine All-Wheel Drive plug-in hybrid version of Volvo’s All-New XC90 SUV. It will continue with plug-in hybrid versions of the new S90 premium sedan and other forthcoming models. Volvo Cars will also broaden the range of plug-in hybrid cars it offers with the introduction of a new front-wheel drive Twin Engine variant. The Swedish car maker will further deepen

its product offering with the introduction of an entirely new range of smaller 40 series cars based on its newly-developed Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which, like SPA, has been designed from the outset for electrification. This makes Volvo Car Group one of very few car makers in the world with two brand new vehicle architectures designed to support both plug-in and pure electric powertrain configurations. Lastly, Volvo Cars has confirmed that it will build an all-electric car for sale by 2019. Further details of this planned model will be released at a later date. Kevin McCann, Managing Director of Volvo Car Australia, said: “We believe that the time has come for electrified cars to cease being a niche technology and enter the mainstream. We are confident that in two years’ time, 10 per cent of Volvo’s sales in Australia will be electrified cars. We believe plug-in hybrid cars offer customers the best combination of efficiency, range and convenience. “Our All-New XC90 T8 Twin Engine, to be launched in Q1 2016, will be one of the cleanest and most powerful 7-seater SUV on the market. It will deliver over

Tesla adds Model S autopilot T

esla has added autopilot that can even parallel park to thousands of its Model S cars already on the road with a software update sent out over the air. Self-driving capabilities - previously limited to cars tested by technology titans such as Google - hit the streets "overnight" with the latest Tesla Version 7.0 software. "We're being especially cautious at this early stage so we are advising drivers to keep their hands on the wheel just in case," Tesla founder and chief executive Elon Musk said at a press conference. "In the long term, people will not need

hands on the wheel, and eventually there won't be wheels or pedals."

Autopilot allows Model S to steer within a lane, change lanes by tapping a turn signal and manage speed using "traffic-aware" cruise control. The car can also scan for available parking spaces, alert drivers when one is spotted and then even parallel park on command, according to Tesla. A year ago, Tesla began equipping Model S cars with radar, cameras, ultrasonic sensors and other hardware to begin incrementally introducing self-driving capabilities, the Californiabased company said.

300 kilowatts equivalent and just 49 g/km CO2, plus a pure electric range of 43 km, an industry leading 2.1 l/100 km in fuel economy and reaching 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds.” This combination of power, efficiency and environmental friendliness will be the hall marks in all of Volvo Cars’ forthcoming electrified models. “We have learned a lot about how people use cars with electrification,” Mr McCann said. “Our research has shown that people are driving Volvo’s Twin Engine cars in electric mode around 50 per cent of the time, meaning our plug-in hybrids already offer a real alternative to conventional powertrain systems. “With around 40 years of experience in the field of electrification, Volvo Cars has learned a lot about battery management along the way, delivering the best range per kilowatt hour in the industry. We have come to a point where the cost versus benefit calculation for electrification is now almost positive. Battery technology has improved, costs are going down, and public acceptance of electrification is no longer a question,” Mr McCann added.

"Ushering in a whole new world of aerial and panoramic photography"

DRONES

FAA proposes $1.9m fine for drone flight in the USA

I

n a sign of what might be to come, a company is set to be penalised for using drones in commercial airspace without permission. The US' Federal Aviation Administration has proposed a record $US1.9 million ($A2.65 million) fine against an aerial photography company for flying drones in crowded New York and Chicago airspace without permission. SkyPan International Inc of Chicago operated 65 unauthorized flights between March 2012 and December 2014 in some of the nation's most congested airspace, the FAA said in a statement. Forty-three flights were in the heavily restricted Class B New York airspace without air traffic control clearance, the agency said. Class B airspace is generally from the ground up to 10,000 feet in altitude, and often shaped like an inverted wedding cake with a five-mile radius around a major airport at the bottom and an approximate 40-mile radius near the top. The drones also lacked the two-way

radio, transponder and altitude-reporting equipment required of manned aircraft. Flying drones in violation of federal regulations "is illegal and can be dangerous," said FAA Administrator Michael Huerta. "We have the safest airspace in the world, and everyone who uses it must understand and observe our comprehensive set of rules and regulations." Karl Brewick, a SkyPan production coordinator, said the company had not had a chance to review the fine proposal and had no immediate comment. SkyPan has 30 days to respond to the FAA. The company's website includes photos of the New York and Chicago skylines, and proclaims its drones are "ushering in a whole new world of aerial and panoramic photography". The FAA proposed regulations this year to allow greater use of commercial drones. But SkyPan's operations probably still would be prohibited under the regulations because the flights took place at higher altitudes than would be permitted and over densely developed areas.

The previous largest fine for drone operations was $US18,700, proposed in September against Xizmo Media, a New York video production company, the FAA said. One reason the fine against SkyPan is so large is because FAA inspectors asked the company to stop making the flights but they continued anyway, FAA spokesman Les Dorr said. The announcement came one day before an FAA official was expected to face tough questioning at a House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing on what the agency is doing to address safety hazards created by drones flying too close to manned aircraft. FAA officials have said they are receiving multiple reports daily of drones flying in the vicinity of airports and aeroplanes. Between November 2014 and August 2015, the FAA received more than 700 reports by pilots of drone sightings, although questions have been raised about whether some reports involved birds mistaken for drones. Most of the flights appear to be unauthorised. Also, the US Forest Service has reported 18 unauthorised drone flights above or near bushfires, and that 10 of the incidents hampered aerial fire-fighting operations.

Facebook to test mobile app shopping tab F

acebook says it will begin testing a shopping tab for its mobile app as it works to ramp up advertising and online commerce offerings. Mobile advertising accounts for some three-quarters of the leading social network's revenue, and it is out to make even more money by weaving the ability to buy items more tightly with marketing messages. "On Facebook, we've seen that people are coming to our platform not only to connect with friends and family but also with products and brands," the Silicon Valley-

based internet firm said in an online post. "We want to build native experiences that make it easier for both people to discover products on mobile and businesses to drive more sales." Facebook introduced a new ad format that lets people smoothly complete purchases inside the social network instead of being taken to outside websites that could stall or delay the process. In coming weeks, Facebook will begin testing a Shop section where people can "discover, share, and purchase" products that they may currently seek out in various

locations such as News Feed or Pages at the social network. A small number of US partners will take part in the Shop section test, with an eye to expanding offerings if the results are promising. Some new products, such as Carousel, which allows marketers to display assortments of products and links in a single ad, have been previously launched. Facebook has also introduced "buy" buttons to streamline purchases at the social network.

Govt to start innovation 'crusade' T

he federal government is set to "unleash" innovation and science with a new industry agenda to be announced at the end of 2015. New Innovation Minister Christopher Pyne joined Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at an 'innovation roundtable' at Western Sydney University on Friday, speaking with representatives from the CSIRO, universities and big and small business. Mr Pyne said the government was keen to learn from those in the know. "The government wants to listen, not to assume it knows every answer before everyone else does," Mr Pyne said.

"We'll always have the bedrock of agriculture and mining and manufacturing but innovation, creative industries, start-ups, new technologies, this is the new economy and Australia has the intellectual capacity to make the most of that. "Towards the end of the year, we'll announce an agenda around innovation and science which I think will unleash and commercialise those ideas, and enable people to feel like they can take risk." In his leadership speech in September, Mr Turnbull said Australia had the potential to be at the vanguard of the new economy.

"This is the new economy and Australia has the intellectual capacity to make the most of that" Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull along with minister for industry, innovation and science, Christopher Pyne, (left), meet with innovator Stephen Brink, (centre)

He re-emphasised that ethos on Friday, saying technological disruption was something to be embraced. "If we are going to remain, as we must, a high wage, generous social welfare net economy, a prosperous economy, then we have to be more competitive, more

productive, more innovative," he said. "The opportunities, whether they are given by technology or by the enormous opportunities from a growing global economy, are all there. "Our ability to take advantage of them is limited only by our own imagination."

I’m a very friendly, cuddly old girl who is looking for a quiet home where I can curl up inside with you and a good book. WHAT’S ON IN MELBOURNE

Gig Guide p30 Live & Local Music

A

mid much hype and speculation ACDC has announced Australian rock band, Kingswood, along with The Hives, as special guest performers on the Australian leg of their ‘Rock or Bust’ World Tour, kicking off in November this year.

Currently at the tail end of their ‘Microscopic Wars’ tour, Kingswood will play the Mornington’s Grand Hotel on Friday October 30 – just weeks before hitting the stage to join iconic rockers ACDC on their much anticipated tour.

From Mornington to AC/DC

Fergus Linacre is the man behind the rumbling and engrossing vocals so signature to the band’s indisputable brand of rock ‘n’ roll swagger. PEARL caught up with the singer ahead of the tour, which has seen Kingswood showcase their debut album, Microscopic Wars, recorded in Nashville’s legendary Blackbird Studio with Vance Powell. With heavyweights like Jack White and the Arctic Monkeys under the producer’s belt, we were keen to know how the pairing came about.

The album is certainly a testament to the band’s ability to diversify their sound and still resound with audiences. Having individually been a part of punk, jazz and several other musical outfits as teens, it’s not surprising that the boys are capable of picking up unfamiliar instruments and having a tinker. It is however surprising to see the band move boldly away from the ‘Queens of the Stone Age-sound’ so successfully propagated in previous EP’s. The album covers a span of rock, from rootsy “I’m not too sure how, but he heard our EP, Americana, to grungy power chords and even really liked it and said he’d be interested in lighter pop-oriented material. While Linacre working with us. Considering you usually have maintains that diversity was always within to book him years in advance, we were lucky the musical realms of Kingswood, he credits to take his interest. Actually, it was pretty funny Powell and Nashville for the confidence to because the first EP we sent to him was a explore those avenues in Microscopic Wars. song that just Al and I were working on in our “Powell made us feel like there were absolutely little house in Kew. Al played drums (he’s the no boundaries. He made us feel really guitarist) and I played base and keyboards confident and free to do whatever we wanted. and we just swapped all of the instruments around for the different parts. It sounded pretty I think it was good to get out of Australia and the leave the whole mindset of ‘will this fly shit; I mean, Alex is a talented musician but on a certain radio station?’ behind us. It’s not he’s not a great drummer. So Vance got this something anyone wants to admit to thinking first recording and was like ‘what have I got when writing a song, but it’s a hang-up for myself into – this band is terrible!’ I guess many Australian musicians. A good way to eventually he found out that it was a very escape all that was to get out of the country rough demo. So we probably shouldn’t have and be in Nashville where so many incredible sent a demo with the singer and guitarist musicians and people surrounded us. We doing all the instrumentals to this Grammywinning producer, but it worked out really well just wanted to make music we’d love and the musicians around us would respect.” and we ended up having a ball in Nashville.”

Microscopic Wars stormed into the ARIA charts top ten with a debut at #6 and subsequently received an ARIA nomination for ‘Best Rock Album’. Despite the band’s lack of emphasizing appeal to the major broadcaster, several singles from the album have invaded tripe j’s airwaves on high-rotation. While the Microscopic Wars has taken the band to a new level, Kingswood had the unique experience of touring almost every major Australian festival including Splendour On The Grass, Big Day Out, Groovin The Moo and Falls Festival in addition to supporting the likes of Aerosmith, Grinspoon and The Living End on their national tours. “I think we kind of didn’t feel like we deserved it. I always felt that you weren’t a ‘real’ band until you had an album, until you could hold that album in your hand and say this is our first album. It’s the gun, you know?” Smoking gun now in hand, Kingswood will play at The Grand Hotel, 124 Main St Mornington on Friday 3oth October 2015 – a fitting kick off for the venue’s Spring - Summer Live line-up, that includes, The Basics (with Gotye) on Sunday 1st November and British India on Tuesday 29th December. You learn from others around you and slowly you get the confidence to find your own voice.” Simon Imrei

brand new music night is coming to the Bayside area’s funkiest lounge and party place, supporting live & local acoustic, grassroots talent each and every Thursday night! Hosted by former Mornington Peninsula – now Bayside – local and singer/songwriter Simon Imrei, the night will be a chance to connect musicians from all around Melbourne and surrounds with a unique new venue with an intimate and nurturing environment, despite what they choose to play. “Having run Open Mics and showcases on the Peninsula, it’s crucial to create an atmosphere in the room where musos ‘want’ to come and play,” Imrei says. “Whether you’re a professional artist looking for a venue you haven’t played at yet, or an up and coming songwriter wanting to take the plunge and start performing live, we want each person getting on our stage to feel encouraged, listened to and totally comfortable. If you have that, then you’ll get some really special moments that people will want to keeping coming back to see.”

Since opening less than two years ago, Side Street Lounge (the ‘little sister’ of Mordialloc’s famous ‘Main Street Café’) has quickly become the destination for tasty and creative share-food served til late, boutique beers & regional Victorian wines, not to mention their signature cocktails. In addition to proudly serving locals, the venue is perfectly placed right next to Mordialloc Train station, on the Frankston line, making trips from further afield for mates, morsels or music that much safer and easier. OPEN MIC THURSDAYS, supporting live & local acoustic grassroots talent, each & every week! Kitchen opens 5:30pm, registrations start 7:30pm and the music starts from 8:30pm. Originals and covers all welcome so bring your own instrument and get on stage If you’re a Melbourne musician, or lover of great live & local music, then Mordialloc’s newest hidden treasure is going to be right up your alley! Side Street Lounge, 501 Main St, Mordialloc – right next to Mordy Station! Find Side Street on Facebook for further details.

BIG GUIDE 31

RUBENS & SASKWATCH ANNOUNCE LOCAL SHOW URBAN SPREAD – the crew who put on epic burb-parties for Allday, DZ Deathrays, In Hearts Wake, Northlane, Delta Riggs, The Bennies – are launching a red-hot SUMMER SERIES across their venues, bringing the summer party vibes to the burbs in a huge way. Answering the growing demand for a local alternative night on the city outskirts, URBAN SPREAD have booked in an epic summer of shows by some of the biggest names in rock, indie, hardcore, alt-rock, punk, blues and roots, folk and hip hop… and if the first announcement is any indication, we’re ON like Donkey Kong.

Setting a quality tone for the SUMMER SERIES artist list that will be revealed across the hottest months, URBAN SPREAD amp things up with a three-date run with The Rubens. Spruiking second album Hoops, the follow up to their The Rubens certified-platinum, self-titled debut album (which landed at an impressive #3 on the ARIA Album Charts, earned them a nomination for ‘Best Album’ at the j Awards, clocked up three ARIA Award nominations and an APRA Award) The Rubens are currently on their biggest tour ever, and stoked to be bringing the party to the fringe. Having played one of the highlight sets at Splendour, and with Hoops debuting at #2 on the ARIA charts, The Rubens are warming up for URBAN SPREAD by doing a lazy 25+ date national tour [they’re already onto their second Forum show]. Along for the ride is Saskwatch: having just released their gamechanging record Sorry I Let It Come Between Us, the now-6-piece are going through a watershed moment, shaking up their soul reputation and heading into untested waters with a collection

of songs alternatively dubbed “raw” and “sparse”, a fascinating direction for this much-loved outfit. Opening the night for The Rubens and Saskwatch will be Harts, who, according to Music Feeds, “validated every single breathless comparison to Jimi Hendrix, disco legend Nile Rodgers and Prince (who found Harts online and invited him over to jam)” at his recent BigSound show. You better get in early for this one! The Rubens with special guests Saskwatch and Harts play Chelsea Heights Hotel on Friday November 20 and tickets are on sale now from the venue and Moshtix.

All-new Jeep Renegade

T

The world’s most capable small SUV

he all-new Jeep Renegade has arrived, offering Australian customers a unique combination of unparalleled off-road capability, the open-air freedom of an available My Sky roof system, the availability of a segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission, three fuel-efficient engine options, world-class refinement and a host of innovative safety and advanced technology offerings. The result is a spectacular small SUV that’s uniquely Jeep - a city-sized SUV that’s not confined to the urban environment. From the start, Jeep designers knew the Renegade would need to deliver best-in-class off-road capability with city-sized proportions that exuded the brand’s rugged style, while at the same time enhancing versatility, manoeuvrability and style. Additionally, designers were tasked to create an all-new SUV that would symbolise the brand’s design and ingenuity, as it would mark the Jeep brand’s first entry into this segment in more than 100 markets around the globe. Last, Renegade had to offer the open-air freedom that dates back to its 1941 roots with the Willys MB Jeep. The result is the all-new Renegade, a vehicle that builds on the Jeep Wrangler’s powerful stance, and features fresh new styling with rugged body forms and aggressive proportions that, on Trailhawk models, enable best-in-class approach and departure angles purposely designed to deliver outstanding off-road capability. And for segment-exclusive panoramic views, the available My Sky roof panel system conveniently stows flat in the boot to provide passengers open-air freedom with ease. Keeping with the tradition of the legendary 1941 Willys MB Jeep, the all-new Renegade also offers a unique open-air freedom with an available My Sky open-air roof system.

Manually removable front and rear panels with a premium power tilt/slide front panel, the segment-exclusive My Sky roof-panel system quickly brings the outdoors inside. Designed for convenience, the honeycomb fiberglass polyurethane roof panels are lightweight and stow neatly in the rear cargo area. For added design detail, the My Sky roof system features an embossed “X” stamped into the roof that exudes strength and plays on the brand’s utilitarian history. Designed and engineered to deliver both legendary Jeep capability and outstanding on-road dynamics, the Renegade is the first small SUV from FCA Australia to use the all-new “small-wide 4x4 architecture.” With its fully independent suspension capable of up to 205mm of wheel articulation at the rear wheels, and 170mm at the front, along with 211mm (8.3 inches) of ground clearance (on Trailhawk models), Renegade raises the bar in the small SUV segment with best-inclass off-road capability. Extensive use of advanced steels, composites and advanced computer-impact simulations enable the Renegade’s architecture to deliver worldclass torsional stiffness, along with the durability required for Trail Rated adventures. Leveraging 4x4 technology from the allnew Jeep Cherokee, the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk offers the most advanced and intelligent 4x4 system in its class to deliver outstanding off-road capability. Innovation is also at the forefront of any new Jeep vehicle, and the Renegade is the first small SUV to feature a disconnecting rear axle and power take-off unit (PTU) – all to provide the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk with enhanced fuel economy. The system instantly engages when 4x4 traction is needed. The Renegade Trailhawk is also the first Jeep to integrate Koni’s frequency selective damping (FSD) front and rear strut system. This damping

system enables the Renegade to deliver world-class road-holding and handling characteristics. Like the new Jeep Cherokee, the all-new Jeep Renegade has raised the bar — this time in the small SUV class — with the first available nine-speed automatic transmission. Paired with the 129kW and 230Nm, 2.4-litre Tigershark engine in Trailhawk trim, the nine-speed transmission delivers numerous benefits customers will appreciate, including aggressive launches, smooth power delivery at highway speeds and improved fuel efficiency. Renegade Sport, Longitude and Limited models are offered with a 103kW and 230Nm, 1.4-litre MultiAir2 Turbo engine paired with a smooth-shifting six-speed DDCT (Dual Dry Clutch Transmission) automatic gearbox. For even more choice, the Renegade Sport is also available with an 81kW and 152Nm 1.6-litre eTorq engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The option of two- or fourwheel drive, with three engine choices and three transmission options means there’s an all-new Jeep Renegade to suit every need. Safety and security were at the forefront in the development of the Jeep Renegade, setting the stage for more than 60 available safety and security features – including the availability of Forward Collision Warning-Plus and LaneSense Departure Warning-Plus. In addition, engineers added both active and passive safety and security features, including available Blind-spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path detection, and a standard equipment list which includes a ParkView reverse parking camera complete with dynamic grid lines; electronic stability control (ESC) with electronic roll mitigation and seven air bags.

Oscar Pistorius begins house arrest

O

scar Pistorius has been released from prison, South African officials say, and will serve his remaining sentence under house arrest.

According to local media, he will stay at his uncle Arnold's property in Pretoria, but the location has not been confirmed.

"He would normally be expected to report to the police periodically. There may be provision for drug tests and there will be random visits by correctional services," The Paralympian star was allowed out of prison in the capital Pretoria late on Monday, criminal lawyer Martin Hood told AFP. a day early in an apparent attempt to avoid "If he doesn't comply, he loses the privilege media coverage of his release. of correctional supervision and can go back to prison." Pistorius was found guilty of culpable homicide, a charge equivalent to manslaughter, after telling the court he shot Steenkamp through a bathroom door because he mistook her for an intruder. He faces a further test at the Supreme Court on November 3 when prosecutors will appeal for a murder conviction and a tougher sentence that could see him jailed for at least 15 years.

"The handling of the actual placement is an operational matter of the local management, and how they handle it is their prerogative that is carried out in the best interest of all parties concerned, the victims, the offender and the Department of Correctional Services." Pistorius was granted parole last week following several reviews that delayed his original release date after he had served a sixth of his five-year sentence for killing Steenkamp, a model and law graduate. Pistorius, 28, had been due to be released on Tuesday. "It will be very good. He should have been released on August 21," his lawyer Brian Webber said, hours before his release.

49ers coach says Hayne 'improving' S

an Francisco 49ers coach Jim Tomsula has given a lukewarm assessment of Jarryd Hayne as a running back.

The former NRL star came on the field for numerous plays in the 49ers' 25-20 victory against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, but he was never handed the ball. On one play Hayne failed to block two Raven defenders who sacked 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. "Improving," Tomsula said on Monday when asked about Hayne and the 49ers' other rookie running back, Mike Davis. "Are they as good as our starter? No.

"They're not there yet, but they are improving and we like both of them."

Hayne, who also plays punt returner, is expected to be the third running back option and Davis will likely be dropped from the The 49ers' running back stocks were 46-man squad to play the Seahawks. depleted with the team's star at the position, Carlos Hyde, playing with a foot injury while "Right now I'm very optimistic where Reggie is," Tomsula said. Reggie Bush has appeared briefly in just three of the season's six games. Hayne had his third fumble of the season In those three games Bush failed to stay on the field, limping off with a calf strain. "Carlos Hyde to me is a special runner," Tomsula said. I am portrayed as a "villain": Whincup

J

amie Whincup may be forgiven by his Holden team but the V8 Supercars star reckons he has been portrayed as the "villain" ahead of this weekend's Gold Coast 600.

Whincup said he had cleared the air with furious Red Bull team boss Roland Dane in the wake of his Bathurst 1000 gaffe that left his V8 title defence in tatters.

However, Whincup was frustrated he had not been given the same chance to "tell his side of the story" in the media during the fallout over his Mount Panorama bungle. "At the end of the day I have been labelled a villain in the whole situation but I was just trying to do the right thing," Whincup told AAP. Dane was livid after Whincup ignored team orders to pit at Bathurst and passed a safety car, relegating him from second to the back of the field with 20 laps left in the Great Race. He finished 18th. Last year Whincup also ignored team orders at Bathurst and ran out of fuel on the 161st and final lap while leading. Whincup said Dane was satisfied with his explanation ahead of this weekend's Gold Coast 600, but felt he had been portrayed in a bad light by the media. Whincup became the butt of social media jibes after back to back Bathurst bungles that have relegated him to eighth in the standings with just four rounds left. "The team briefing was fine. Roland was (seen) in the heat of the moment at the race weekend," Whincup said. "The best thing to happen was someone letting me give my side of the story. "I thought the team made a mistake by bringing us both in on the same lap (to pit) - I was just trying to avoid an (pitlane) issue. "Five seconds later I realised I made the wrong call. "But I was prepared to get behind the safety car and couldn't believe my eyes when I got the green light from the car sitting on the right indicating for me to go through. "It was like a 'get out of jail free' card. Of course I was going to take it but the stewards deemed I shouldn't have done that." Six-time V8 series champion Whincup is 803 points behind championship leader Mark Winterbottom of Ford. Whincup conceded he was still in title contention to defend his V8 crown but would assess his hopes after the final enduro round at the Gold Coast. "I won't think about that until after this weekend," Whincup said. "We are still in contention but there is no point in commenting on it. "I think any comment would be (portrayed) as a negative comment. "We will assess it after this weekend and work out our run home." Practice for the Gold Coast 600 begins on Friday.

Great Rugby World Cup controversies

Richardson said the meeting with the International Olympic Committee would be “exploratory in nature”. “The plan is to meet them at this stage in mid-November, we are still trying to finalise a date but the invitation has come to meet,” Richardson told media in a briefing. “Multisport federations like the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics have expressed an interest in cricket being part of those Games. “The Olympics is not as nearly advanced in their discussions with us in that regard (as the Commonwealth Games’ proposal to have cricket in the 2022 event in Durban, South Africa) and CG certainly are more open to, not necessarily to Twenty20 cricket or one of the established formats, but they want to discuss other things like double wicket or mixed teams.”

Cats trade bonanza worth the price: Scott

Cricket was included in 1900 Paris Olympics but it was

SPORT  47 badly affected by the lack of participation after Belgium and the Netherlands pulled out, leaving Great Britain and France to play. The idea of including Twenty20 cricket in Olympics was also resisted by India and England who did not want their matches affected in the time slots when the Games are held. The Commonwealth Games have included cricket only once, in 1998 in Malaysia. Richardson said the details were still to be worked out. “Bear in mind it’s not just what cricket wants, cricket might want to be part of the Olympics but the Olympics might not want cricket,” said Richardson. “They might want cricket subject to various conditions that we are not able to perform - we just need to find out from them exactly what they are thinking, how they are thinking and take it from there.” Richardson said the Paralympics could also be an option for the game. “Can we have a sport which can be accepted in the Paralympics,” said Richardson. “Again it can be looked into it.”

G

eelong coach Chris Scott is comfortable with the high price the Cats have paid for their busy AFL trade period.

Geelong have welcomed four experienced players - Patrick Dangerfield (Adelaide), Scott Selwood (West Coast), Zac Smith (Gold Coast) and Lachie Henderson (Carlton) - in their trade bonanza but don't have a pick in this year's draft until the fourth round as a result. The Cats have also traded out their first pick at next year's draft but Scott says the bold moves are the culmination of years of planning. "A lot of thought has gone into this from some people who have been shown to be pretty astute in the footy industry," Scott said on Tuesday. "In a perfect world, you keep all your early picks, absolutely, but this is something that we think will benefit the club in the short term. "But as we've said a few times this week, the four guys we're bringing in are 25 ... they're adding to a big group of players that are now ready to compete against the best. "So if they work hard, and we can integrate those guys into our system, we've got a big group of players that are going to play together for a long period of time." While delighted with the outcome, Scott admitted there was some risk involved with the club's flurry of trade activity.

Dawson Simpson also departing in the major overhaul of the club's playing stocks. Henderson's long-anticipated arrival at Geelong came at the expense of the Cats' first-round draft pick next year. The Blues parted company with Henderson with three games remaining in the season after he handed them his trade request. The new Cat admitted it wasn't an ideal end to a tough campaign.

"Potentially, we'll look back and say we would've liked to have had a couple of extra picks in 2015 and 2016 but, unfortunately, you can't have it all," he said. "When we look back on it now, we're very comfortable with the decisions we've made."

"I look back on it now and I've learnt a lot of lessons this year probably not great lessons about myself," Henderson said. "It was a tough year for myself and the club and I probably didn't really play how I should have this year.

Promising Cats midfielder Dean Gore was sent to Adelaide as part of the trade for Dangerfield, with Josh Walker, Jarrad Jansen and

"So I've learnt some lessons and there definitely is a point to prove."
