Australian housing boom has peaked A
ustralia's housing boom has peaked, with the challenge now to pull off a `soft landing', investment bank Morgan Stanley says as it predicts further interest rates cuts and a mini-budget stimulus.
While official interest rates remain at a record low two per cent, tightened lending standards are prompting a cooling-off period amid slower net migration, its analysts note in a research report. "We are now calling the peak in the housing cycle, and expect further falls in auction clearance rates and house price momentum, with a negative impact on construction occurring over 2016," the report said. The analysts say the housing slowdown comes at an awkward time for the Australian economy as it transitions out of the mining boom. "We believe recession risks are elevated as regulators attempt a difficult soft landing of the housing market amidst external and income challenges," the report said. "While we believe policymakers have meaningfully tightened credit conditions and are willing to sacrifice some growth to lessen the risk of a 'crash' down the track, the challenge is to pull off a 'soft-landing', as seen in 2003-04." Morgan Stanley argues fiscal stimulus is necessary and the federal leadership spill could be a catalyst to unlock a major infrastructure stimulus. It predicts new prime minister Malcolm Turnbull may use the mid-year economic

forecast in December as a mini-budget with a new growth agenda, although Mr Turnbull on Monday said it was not something he had considered. The investment bank believes Australia has about $80 billion of headroom under its triple-A credit rating and could allocate a good part of that to an infrastructure stimulus. It also argues the RBA will need to cut rates by another 50 basis points by mid2016 as the housing slowdown impacts on growth, predicting unemployment will rise to 6.8 per cent - from 6.2 per cent currently - and growth will likely miss its forecasts.
As if the problem of methamphetamines wasn’t bad enough, a new study says rising use among police detainees could be the forerunner of growing use across the community.

RBA governor Glenn Stevens last week said regulatory measures to curb growth in investment home loans are doing their job, and Morgan Stanley believes they will be effective in cooling the market. Many lenders have hiked interest rates for investors and made it harder for them to get loans while cutting rates for owner occupiers in response to a crackdown by the financial regulator, which has set a 10 per cent `speed limit' for investor property loan growth. CoreLogic RP Data on Tuesday said the Sydney housing market is at or slightly past its peak.
The Australian Institute of Criminology said methamphetamine and its most potent form known as ice were used by almost half of a sample of 2310 detainees interviewed in 2014.

That proportion has risen steadily since 2009 and the study said that could be an early warning of a potential rise in use among the general population.

August breaks heat records across globe L
ast month was the hottest August in modern history, in the latest sign of an unusually warm year across the world’s land and sea surfaces, US government scientists say.
“This was the sixth month in 2015 that has broken its monthly temperature record (February, March, May, June, July and August),” the NOAA report said.
Not only was last month the warmest August on record when land and water temperatures were taken into account, sea temperatures were the highest for any month in the 1880-2015 record, according to a report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that was released on Thursday.
Record-breaking warmth was seen across much of South America and parts of Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Asia.

the 1880-2015 record, besting the previous record set in 1998 by 0.23 Fahrenheit (0.13C)”, said the report. The record continued a worrying trend of warming,
which many scientists say is caused by fossil-fuel burning and is exacerbated by the presence of El Nino, which has a warming effect on some parts of the world’s oceans.
“Large portions of the seven seas (where temperature records are available) recorded much-warmer-than-average temperatures, with some locations across all oceans experiencing record warmth,” the report said.

Russia deploys 28 combat planes in Syria
Russia has deployed 28 combat planes in Syria, US officials say, confirming the latest move in Moscow's increasing military presence in the war-torn nation.
Washington in recent weeks has expressed growing concern over Russia's moves to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and warned that militarily backing his regime risks further hampering efforts at bringing peace. Experts said the build-up is likely a prelude to military action. "There are 28 fighter and bomber aircraft" at an airfield in the western Syrian province of Latakia, one of the officials told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. A second official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed
the figure and added there were also about 20 Russian combat and transport helicopters at the base.
That official also said Russia was operating drones over Syria, but did not give additional details. According to the officials, Russia has sent 12 SU-24 attack aircraft, 12 SU-25 ground attack aircraft and four Flanker fighter jets. Analyst Jeffrey White of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy said: "They are not going to sit around and defend the airfield or maybe even the province of Latakia. "This kind of aircraft suggests that the Russians intend to exert their combat power outside of Latakia in an offensive role."
Moscow has been on a diplomatic push to get the coalition of Western and regional powers fighting the Islamic State group in Syria to join forces with Assad against the jihadists. US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter spoke with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu on Friday, ending an 18-month freeze in military relations triggered by NATO anger over Moscow's role in the Ukraine crisis. They agreed to continue discussions, which are crucial to lessen the risk of incidents involving coalition forces and Russian forces operating in the same air space. The US-led coalition is carrying out almost daily strikes against the jihadists in Syria.

William condemns illegal tusk hunts T
he Duke of Cambridge has issued a stark warning about the future of the rhino and elephant as he celebrated a leading conservation charity working to protect Africa’s wildlife.
William said the endangered species were threatened with extinction within a few decades and that illegally hunting the animals for their horns or tusks was “barbaric”. His comments came as he gave the keynote speech at a fundraising ball marking the 25th anniversary of the organisation Tusk Trust which he has supported for almost a decade as royal patron.
The black-tie dinner was held in the sumptuous surroundings of Syon House, the home of the Duke of Northumberland. Singer Joss Stone entertained the guests and money was raised by an auction of luxury items and opportunities. “The need to protect wildlife in Africa is greater than ever before,” William said. “You’d have thought we learnt the lessons years ago in the great campaigns to ‘Save the Whale’ or ‘Save the Polar Bear’. But sadly we haven’t. “The elephant and the rhino, among others, are going the same way and, unbelievably,

ustralian film producer Yoram Gross, who helped bring loveable animated characters Blinky Bill and Dot And The Kangaroo to the big screen, has died at the age of 88. Guy Gross told Inside Film that his father died on Monday. He said he "was a wonderfully inappropriate jokester". Gross was born in Krakow Poland in 1926 to a Jewish family.
According to Yoram Gross Film's official website, his family was on Oskar Schindler's famous list, but chose to make their own risky escape, moving hiding places 72 times. He studied music and musicology at Krakow University and by 1950, Yoram moved from Poland to Israel, where he worked as a newsreel and documentary cameraman before becoming an independent film producer and director.
His first animated feature film was Dot and the Kangaroo (1977).

A marked turnaround in opinion polls on Malcolm Turnbull’s elevation to prime minister has been matched by the biggest weekly jump in consumer confidence in at least seven years. “Increased confidence is certainly a positive for the Australian economy, hopefully translating into increased spending, investment and employment,” Commonwealth Securities chief economist Craig James said on Tuesday. The ANZ-Roy Morgan consumer confidence gauge surged 8.7 per cent in the past week, more than recouping the 7.1 per cent drop in the previous fortnight and recovering above its long term averages.

But ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan said what is needed for this bounce to be sustained is the new leadership to deliver a clear economic story for the country. “Expectations are clearly high, not unlike when the coalition initially won power, and the community will be sensitive to disappointment on this front,” Mr Hogan said. Mr Turnbull has made it clear that tax reform will be a big part of the reform agenda.

The promotion of Scott Morrison to treasurer comes mid-way through the tax white paper process started by Joe Hockey.

Michael Croker of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand said this will no doubt make the normal Treasury briefings for incoming ministers lengthier than usual and may slow the next stage of tax reform.

“Then there are the inevitable rumours that any spike in the opinion polls resulting from coalition leadership changes could mean a truncated tax reform process, with a fast track to an earlier-thanexpected 2016 federal election,” Mr Croker told AAP.

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen told a tax reform conference in Sydney it is unrealistic to consider an increased GST as the linchpin of tax reform.

Mr Bowen said boosting GST revenue has been touted as a way of paying states’ health costs, cutting personal income tax, abolishing stamp duty, reducing corporate tax or improving the budget.

Visiting tax expert Chas Roy-Chowdhury is surprised that much of the debate he has heard surrounds the GST, particularly when Mr Turnbull wants to be more internationally competitive. “I would certainly hope ... they do something about corporation tax,” the global head of taxation at the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants told AAP. Mr Roy-Chowdhury said Australia’s rate remains 30 per cent when neighbouring China’s is 25 per cent, while in Britain the 20 per cent rate is dropping to 18 per cent by 2020.

Vic town wants to restore 1950s charm
A
lmost 60 years ago, Tallangatta was deliberately flooded, but this wasn’t the end for the Victorian town. It up and moved about eight kilometres to make way for an expanding Lake Hume, and today the town wants to get moving again.
Tallangatta will mark its diamond jubilee next year, and the local council has bold plan to restore its unique 1950s charm and make it a haven for families and tourists. Towong Shire mayor David Wortmann is hoping for an infusion of federal funds to help the picturesque lake-side town of 1000 people reach is full tourism potential. Tallangatta is 30 minutes from all the services available in Albury-Wodonga and close to ski fields and food, wine and tourism attractions of Victoria’s north-east. “I’ve lived in the shire all my life. I went to school in Tallangatta. I love it here, but I’ve got to be honest, it’s been 60 years since the town moved and it needs a makeover,” Mr Wortmann told AAP. “As a town to live in, we feel that with a few more facilities and an upgrade, it will be more attractive for families.” The original site of Tallangatta was flooded as Lake Hume expanded for downstream irrigation. By 1956, the Victorian government rebuilt Tallangatta by the lake as a model 1950s town with wide streets, a central park and a modern shopping strip.
Four years ago, it launched Tallangatta Tomorrow, a plan to attract a host of new services and broaden its tourism and residential appeal. So far, it’s delivered $10 million in projects. The dilapidated footy clubrooms and recreation reserve are gone, replaced by a modern multi-sport complex. A disused railway bridge was rebuilt and forms part of the High Country Rail Trail, which brings cyclists and walkers to Tallangatta’s doorstep across the lake from Albury-Wodonga. A new community centre is under construction that, crucially, will house a library, kindergarten, health services and a new day-care centre.
main street and create new paths to link the shops, Tallangatta Lookout and rail trail. It’s backed financially by local traders and water authorities but the council still needs up to $2.5 million from the federal government’s National Stronger Regions Fund. Mr Wortmann says an independent study shows Destination Tallangatta will provide an extra 51 ongoing full-time jobs and 100 jobs during construction. “We’re the little shire that could. We’re only a small council but everybody, all of our staff has had a hand in this. We all believe in it,” he said. Gift shop owner Debra Burt says the plan gives little Tallangatta a big future.
“A lot of people would love to work in AlburyWodonga and live in Tallangatta but the “The council has been doing an amazing lack of child care here is a big problem,” Mr job in the past few years building all these Wortmann said. Today, the cheap materials and building services so our town can grow and there is techniques of the day are showing their age. The next stage is the $5.3 million such a good vibe here,” she said. Many small towns struggle to find their place Destination Tallangatta plan. “I love the place, but we can’t do all this by in the modern world, but Mr Wortmann is It will replace the town’s water infrastructure, ourselves. If we can get everything looking proud of the council’s plan for Tallangatta’s modernise the lakeside caravan park, repair great, that will encourage everybody future. buildings, beautify the shopping strip and to invest and new people to come here.” Some old homes were trucked in but most structures were new.
Hundreds of homes to go for new Vic rail H
undreds of homes in North Melbourne and South Yarra will have to go to make way for a new cross-city underground rail network, the Victorian government says.
“At this stage there’s an expectation that the numbers of properties that will need to be acquired will be in the hundreds, and the final number will be settled and of course made public, once the final scope of the project is locked in,” acting premier Jacinta Allan told reporters on Tuesday. The Melbourne Metro Rail project is expected to cost up to $11 billion and the government this week began contacting the 21,000 residents and businesses who will be in some way affected by its construction.

Rusted, broken Harley sells for $600,000 A
dented, broken-down, 90-year-old Harley-Davidson has sold at auction for $600,000 in Melbourne.
An anonymous Australian bidder beat fierce competition from the US and Europe to take home the fractured two-wheeler and sidecar, considered the holy grail of vintage racers. Blood sugar control might avert dementia C
ontrolling blood sugar levels in people with Type 2 diabetes may help prevent dementia, experts say.
A study of 350,000 people with Type 2 diabetes found poor blood sugar control was associated with hospital admissions for the condition. While scientists have previously suggested a link between high blood sugar and Alzheimer’s disease, this new research found that those with high blood sugar levels had a 50 per cent chance of being admitted to hospital with dementia compared to those with good control. In the UK there are 3.3 million people diagnosed with diabetes, with 90 per cent Type 2, which is linked to obesity.
Diabetes UK expect this figure will rise to five million by 2025. The data was taken from the Swedish National Diabetes Registry for the period January 2004 to December 2012 and involved analysing blood sugar levels as measured by the HbA1c diabetic blood test. After adjusting for factors that may influence the results, they found that those patients with sugar levels of 10.5 per cent or higher were 50 per cent more likely to have dementia than those with a well-controlled level of 6.5 per cent or less. It also found those patients who had suffered a stroke previously were 40 per cent more likely to develop dementia than those who had not had a stroke. Dr Aidin Rawshani and colleagues presented their findings at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes conference in Stockholm. “The positive association between HbA1c and risk of dementia in fairly young patients with Type 2 diabetes indicates a potential for prevention of dementia with improved blood sugar control,” they said. Dr Richard Elliott, research communications manager at Diabetes UK, said: “We already know that high blood glucose levels are linked to a higher risk of problems with memory and thinking in people with Type 2 diabetes, which can in turn lead to a higher risk of dementia in later life. “The exact reasons for this are still unclear, but it is important to manage diabetes carefully in order to reduce the risk of serious complications. “The best way to do that is to take diabetes medications prescribed by your doctor and to maintain a healthy weight by exercising regularly and eating a healthy balanced diet that is low in salt, fat and sugar.”

Scientists claim invisibility breakthrough It is the closest scientists have come yet to recreating Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak. An ultra-thin flexible material has been developed that can wrap around an object and make it vanish. Although the “invisibility skin” has only been tested at microscopic scales, scientists believe it should be possible to create larger versions in the future. The 80 nanometre thick film is made from gold “nanoantenna” blocks that interfere with the normal scattering of light waves. In the test, the “cloak” was wrapped around a tiny lumpy and dented “bump” measuring 36 micrometres square - about the size of a few living cells. Once activated by switching the polarisation of the nanoantennae, it made the object invisible. Lead researcher Dr Xiang Zhang, from the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, said: “This is the first time a 3D object of arbitrary shape has been cloaked from visible light. “Our ultra-thin cloak now looks like a coat. It is easy to design and implement, and is
potentially scalable for hiding macroscopic objects.” In the Harry Potter stories, the boy wizard hides from his enemies using a cloak that renders the wearer invisible. It works by magic rather than the light-channelling “metamaterials” used by scientists. Metamaterials have features smaller in size than the wavelength of light, allowing them to re-route incoming light waves. Previous invisibility experiments have produced bulky, rigid designs that cannot be adapted to different environments. The technology, described in the journal Science, holds promise for applications such as high resolution microscopes, super-fast optical computers, and 3D displays. However it is still a long way from providing the perfect camouflage for soldiers and military vehicles, or allowing spies to creep around unseen. Any movement by the object being hidden currently breaks the invisibility “spell”. Also, the “cloak” only works over a limited range of light wavelengths.

Mobile app to measure UV rays A New Zealand startup will launch a mobile app this summer that allows people to measure UV levels and whether they need to apply sunscreen.
forecast the likely levels over the next two days, and also include what protection certain skin types would typically need at those levels, he said.
Auckland University student Ming Cheuk and former student Daniel Xu, co-founders of Spark 64, trialled their UV Lens invention last summer in 100 kindergartens around the country in a joint venture with sunscreen manufacturer Banana Boat.
“We want people to be able to quickly see what the levels of UV are and what protection they’d need, not just the raw data,” he said.
A sensor in the centres’ playgrounds measured and wirelessly sent data about UV levels to the smartphones of teachers, who could then involve the children in learning about the risks of spending too much time in the sun. Mr Cheuk said the UV Lens is a mobile application that was fed data from localised ground sensors and other satellite information from around the world.
While the app itself would be free, consumers would be charged for the premium features such as forecasting. Mr Cheuk said they hope to have it in market by November in time for the New Zealand summer and eventually wanted to take the app global, depending on the outcome of negotiations with sunscreen companies which may back the product.
Mr Xu and Mr Cheuk own one third each share of Spark 64 while director The mobile app would allow Richard McLean, who has provided business advice, people with smartphones to know what the UV levels owns the remaining 33 per were in their local area, cent.

Whisky in space returns home
hisky that was fired into space almost four years ago as part W of an experiment has returned to earth with enhanced flavour and character, according to its creator. A vial of unmatured malt from the Ardbeg Distillery on Islay was sent to the International Space Station in a cargo spacecraft in October 2011, along with particles of charred oak. Another vial of the same whisky was was kept at the distillery for comparison. It retuned to earth last year and a series of tests by the distillery found that the space samples were “noticeably different” to those kept on earth. Ardbeg believe it could have “significant implications for the whisky industry”. The experiment was designed to investigate how micro-gravity would affect the behaviour of terpenes, compounds that give flavour to many foods, wines and spirits. Dr Bill Lumsden, Ardbeg’s director of distilling, said: “The space samples were noticeably different. When I nosed and tasted the space samples, it became clear that much more of Ardbeg’s smoky, phenolic character shone through - to reveal a different set of smoky flavours which I have not encountered here on earth before. “Ardbeg already has a complex character but the results of our experiment show that there is potentially even more complexity that we can uncover, to reveal a different side to the whisky. “Our findings may also one day have significant implications for the whisky industry as a whole. “In the future, the altered range of wood extractions could lead scientists to be able to detail the ratios of compounds expected in whiskies of a certain age.” Ardbeg was invited to take part in the space experiment by US space research company NanoRacks, who praised the distillery for being “pioneers”.

New ‘safe’ screens a selling point A

But the problem is the blue ray emitted at the same time, which is feared to pose potentially serious health consequences. It is all scare-mongering or scientific fact? Serge Picaud, a researcher at the Institute of Sight in Paris, has a more measured take on it. “We should not be so afraid that we bin all our screens,” he said. Picaud carried out a study in 2013 in which
he exposed sample retina cells from a pig similar to those found in humans - to different wavelengths of light, and showed that those between 415 and 455 nanometres killed the cells.
In other words, deep blue light, which is close to ultra-violet light, is particularly harmful to eyes. Nevertheless, the scientist says, “that must be taken in proportion as the light intensities produced by our screens are still relatively weak compared to sunlight”. “Those who worry about harm caused by screens, do they also wear sunglasses at the beach?” asked Picaud. Vincent Gualino, an ophthalmologist at a French hospital also believes that “we should not be afraid of the screens”. “The real problem is over-consumption,” the specialist on retina illnesses said, warning people against spending more than six hours in front of their screens. Children’s eyes are most vulnerable, as their retinas are clear and they “will be exposed over 40 or 50 years”. For those who cannot help but stay glued to screens, Gualino prescribes special glasses to filter out the blue light. Such glasses are widely available in Japan, while in France, lens maker Essilor offers special lenses that screen out the harmful rays.
Apple moving forward on car build A
pple is speeding up work on a project that could lead to the California tech giant building its own electric car, according to a new report. The maker of iPhones and iPads is tripling the number of engineers on the project, code-named Titan, and has set a “ship date” of 2019, the Wall Street Journal says. The newspaper said that could just be a target for engineers to sign off on the design, not necessarily when a car would be available for sale. Apple declined comment on the Journal’s report, which cited unidentified sources. While Apple has never officially confirmed it’s planning to build a car, there are strong indications it’s at least interested in automotive technology. In recent months, Apple has hired a number of engineers with backgrounds in automotive and battery design. Apple representatives also met in May with officials at an automotive testing facility located east of San Francisco. Site officials later confirmed to The Associated Press that Apple requested information about using their facility. And in August, an Apple lawyer met
with officials at California’s Department of Motor Vehicles to discuss the state’s regulations for self-driving cars. A department spokesman confirmed that meeting to The Associated Press on Monday, after it was first reported by the Guardian newspaper.
“DMV often meets with various companies regarding DMV operations. The Apple meeting was to review DMV’s autonomous vehicle regulations,” said Armando Botello, the agency’s deputy director, in an email. A number of automakers and tech companies, including Google and Uber, are working on technology for autonomous and electric-powered vehicles. Google last week announced taht it’s hired former Hyundai US CEO John Krafcik to run its self-driving car program. Analysts say Apple has the financial resources and ambition to design and build a high-end vehicle, although some believe it’s more likely interested in developing software for use in cars made by other companies. “We believe the auto industry represents a significant opportunity for Apple, but we also expect Apple to be deliberate as always in its product development and testing,” said Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster in a September 1 report. Munster said he believes there’s a “50-60 per cent probability” of an Apple car becoming a reality.

Israeli mini-scanner tells what’s in food An Israeli start-up has launched a pocket device which analyses instantly the composition of food, drink, medication or other objects.
Consumer Physics says its SCiO tool sends data on the chemical make-up of a substance to the user’s smartphone, where a variety of applications will present the results. It is “the first molecular sensor that fits in the palm of your hand”, says Dror Sharon, co-founder of the firm based in Hod Hasharon, near Tel Aviv. Users will be able to see how many calories are in the burger on their plate, what is in their drink, or if that jacket is really leather. The SCiO, on the market since last month, does not need physical contact with the substance being tested because it uses a beam of light in what is known as Near Infrared Spectroscopy. Each molecule interacts with light to create a unique optical signature, which can reveal an object’s chemical properties, such as moisture, fat or sugar content. By examining, for example, the sugar content of a tomato on the supermarket shelf, the system can determine how ripe it is.
contributing to a constantly expanding information bank.
“The bigger our community gets, the more data SCiO will have about different materials and this goes right back to our community of users,” its website says. The product was launched with the help of crowd funding site Kickstarter, with 13,000 customers so far placing orders for the gadget at $US250 ($A353) apiece, for delivery from December 2015. Sharon says his technology has an appeal that reaches beyond the consumer market. “There is interest from small developers that want to develop something cool for themselves or for their kids, or even teenagers that want to develop this, up to multinationals and large companies,” he says, adding that he is eyeing the industrial sector for the next phase. “There are people that work in industry that on a daily basis look at stuff and say, ‘Is it really the quality that I ordered?’” And one day your smartphone could come with a SCiO built in. The prototype already exists but is kept under careful guard at the premises of Consumer Physics.

Vic’s $2.2b smart meters being ignored
Smart electricity meters meant to help Victorians save money on power bills are being virtually ignored after their $2.2 billion rollout. Just 0.27 per cent of customers have signed up to take advantage of the flexible pricing the meters allow, despite every Victorian being lumped with hundreds of dollars of meter charges. The plan was for four per cent of Victorians to be using flexible pricing by 2014, with 15 per cent by 2017. Auditor-General John Doyle said there was a real risk the assumed benefits of the rollout won’t be achieved. “Two-thirds of Victorians do not understand what the benefits provided through smart meters are,” Mr Doyle said in a report, tabled in Parliament on Wednesday. The smart meters give consumers details about their energy usage and allow them to pick flexible pricing that best suits their needs. But a 2011 report found instead of providing a net benefit to the state, the rollout would cost Victorians $319 million, as the assumed benefits weren’t being delivered. Mr Doyle said that figure was likely to get worse, and criticised the department for failing to track the costs of the project. Consumer Affairs Minister Jane Garrett said the government was working on making sure the complicated energy market was understood. “There’s a whole bunch of confusing things around energy retailing at times for people, we need to make sure that’s really clear,” she told reporters. Victorian Greens leader Greg Barber said consumers are missing out. “The smart meter program was mismanaged. The public have paid $2.2 billion for it, but the savings have gone to the power companies, mainly because they got to sack the meter readers,” he said.

Game of Thrones reigns over the Emmys with 12 wins G
ame Of Thrones has set a new record, winning a total of 12 Emmy awards.
The show won eight awards at last week’s Creative Emmy Awards, and then went on to scoop a further four at the star-studded Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony held on Sunday at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles. Actor Peter Dinklage won outstanding supporting actor in a drama series and the show also picked up the prestigious outstanding drama series award. Dinklage embraced co-star Lena Headey and told the packed crowd: “I was chewing gum, I wasn’t prepared because the other actors in my category awe me with their performances.” The show also won outstanding directing
for a drama series (David Nutter, Mother’s Mercy) and outstanding writing for a drama series (David Benioff and DB Weiss). It was an otherwise disappointing night for British TV talent, as shows like Downton Abbey walked away empty-handed.
Despite being nominated for three awards, among them supporting actor and actress in a drama series, the night belonged instead to American shows, Veep and Olive Kitteridge. Success was also sweet for How To Get Away With Murder’s Viola Davis and Mad Men star Jon Hamm. Davis made Emmy history by becoming the first black actress to win the outstanding lead actress in a drama series award.
Hamm finally scored the Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a drama series after seven previous nominations for the hit show and tripped over on his way up to the stage. Composing himself and collecting his Emmy from Tina Fey, he said: “There has been a terrible mistake clearly. It is impossible to named with all those extraordinary gentlemen, it’s impossible to be up here and to have done this show with these incredible people. “It’s incredible and impossible for me personally to be standing here so I want to thank the people I owe an incredible debt, families who have chosen for some reason to take me in and be nice to me. “Thank you to everybody who watched the show and thank you for this.”

Swift sings new tune after Adams cover T
aylor Swift says she has been listening to Ryan Adams’ remake of her album 1989 so much, she is finding it hard not to sing his version of her songs during her tour. Ryan Adams and guitarist Todd Wisenbaker (who played on the reimagining of the Swift album) were talking about 1989 with Beats 1 DJ Zane Lowe when Swift called and joined in the discussion. The remake, which Adams released on Monday, has been getting rave reviews and Swift said it has even changed how she performs her own music. “I would start singing his new melodies on tour and I’d have to stop myself ... the crowd would be so confused they haven’t heard this record, they don’t know why I’m changing the pre-chorus of Wildest Dreams by two notes,” she said. “It really got in my head, and upon the first listen I knew it was a great album. But those melodies reinstating themselves in my brain, replacing the originals, I was like, ‘All right, this is a really great album.’” Adams said he came up with the idea to cover the album last November when he was going through a difficult time, and then, by the time Christmas came along, he found himself on his own during the holiday season. So he decided to record four of the album’s tracks to tape, but the machine ate the recordings, so he went back and recorded the full album with a full band. Swift said she could hear that Adams had put his own stamp on it. “What struck me immediately when I listened to it is that they’re not cover songs. They’re reimaginings of my songs, and you can tell that he was in a different place emotionally than I was,” she said. “There’s this beautiful aching sadness and longing in this album that doesn’t exist in the original. So that’s my favourite part.” She also said Adams’ re-recording of 1989 was well thought out and conceptualised. “It was not thrown together,” she said.

The two artists will perform a number of their iconic hits in the lead up to the biggest match of the year. In addition to the 100,000 fans who will witness the Virgin Australia Pre-Game Show live on Grand Final day, fans without Grand Final event tickets will have the chance to enjoy a free encore performance on the hallowed turf of the MCG immediately following the Toyota AFL Grand Final. Following the conclusion of the Toyota AFL Grand Final, Bryan Adams and Ellie Goulding will play at the Virgin Australia Premiership Party. First introduced in 2012, the unprecedented fan event sees the MCG open its gates to the public for a free encore performance by the Grand Final entertainers followed by the presentation of the 2015 AFL Premiers to fans for the very first time. Also performing pre-game is American rocker Chris Isaak, currently featured as a judge on Channel 7’s The X Factor, having provided the world with such hits as ‘Wicked Game’, ‘Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing’ and ‘Somebody’s Crying’. This year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final will once again see an array of activities throughout the day involving various members of the Australian football community, including former AFL legends and retiring players along with a host of other football identities. Band Spotlight:
GUNS & ROSEY A
ppetite For Destruction – Australia’s best Guns and Roses concept band rolls in to the Rosey on Saturday October 10 and is sure to bring along all the mischief one would expect from a Gunners Rock’nRoll Roadtrip. APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION was one of… if not the most influential albums of the late 80s, early 90s and still today, and for each of the five members of this awesome tribute show, it was this album that helped define their own careers as musicians. 2007 had marked the
20th anniversary of the release of APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION, and 2008 saw the release of the long awaited new GUNS N ROSES album CHINESE DEMOCRACY, with Guns N Roses having recently toured on that album, and Slash’s recent & well overdue rise to Guitar Hero status has seen this exciting concept band grow from strength to strength..
Over the past 6 years this band has become one of the most reputable, and sort after shows through out Australia, they are known as one of the most authentic and outstanding tribute bands in Melbourne, playing such venues as Crown Casino, The Hi-Fi Bar, Monsters of Rock, Motorcity Festival, touring interstate and overseas. The band plays each song off the timeless Appetite For Destruction album impeccably, but it doesn’t end there, they also play all the hits and most requested songs off each other

Holden Commodore VFII:
The quickest, most powerful, most advanced Commodore ever H
olden has taken the covers off the quickest, most powerful, most advanced Commodore ever built, the Commodore VFII. VFII introduces a new 6.2-litre LS3 engine to all V8 models, along with numerous upgrades including bi-modal exhaust, mechanical sound enhancer and all-new styling cues. Making its debut at a special, custombuilt Commodore Gallery at the brand’s headquarters in Port Melbourne, Holden today celebrated 37 years of Commodore by bringing together more than 30 Commodores, from one of the very first 1978 VB Commodores, to concepts, exports and motorsport heroes, illustrating the history and evolution of Australia’s favourite car. The 2016 Commodore VFII is equipped with the powerful LS3 6.2-litre V8 engine and delivers 304kW of power and an exhilarating 570Nm of torque, ensuring that this is the quickest Commodore ever, posting a 0-100km/h sprint time of 4.9 seconds. An engine of this caliber deserves a pure V8 soundtrack, so Holden engineers developed a distinct and fitting engine sound; the result of endless hours of local testing and courtesy of a newly introduced bi-modal exhaust with unique Holden designed “Baillie Tip” and mechanical sound enhancer. Building on the performance of the LS3 V8 engine, Holden’s track focused, top of the range, SSV Redline sees the introduction of Brembo brakes on all four wheels, providing exceptional braking performance under all conditions and specifically designed to perform under closed circuit and track day
conditions. Holden’s Chairman and Managing Director, Mark Bernhard, described the Commodore VFII as the culmination of nearly four decades of design, engineering and manufacturing expertise, combined with unrivalled Australian experience. “We made a commitment to keep this iconic car exciting and relevant for Australian motorists, and that is exactly what we have done. This is the vehicle that our Commodore customers have been asking for,” said Mr. Bernhard. “Commodore VFII is powerful and refined, it will evoke emotion in its driver and exhibits all of the hallmarks Commodore has become renowned for over the years. “Commodore represents 37-years of innovation, performance and technological advancements and has earned its place as Holden’s longest-standing and most successful nameplate. “Holden’s design, engineering and manufacturing teams have produced the best Commodore ever - a vehicle that truly lives up to its reputation and one that the entire company is incredibly proud of. “This is the reason Holden is committed to ensuring we will continue to have engineering and design input into Commodore, and every other Holden vehicle in our range, for generations to come.” In addition to being the most powerful Commodore ever, VFII also boasts the exceptional refinement and handling that Holden has become famous for. Tuned at
Holden’s Lang Lang proving ground and tested across Australia, VFII’s revised FE3 rear sports suspension increases ride comfort whilst retaining its sharp handling. Holden’s Lead Development Engineer, Amelinda Watt, said the extensive development work combined with Holden’s Australian expertise ensured the new engine, sound and handling was unique and thrilling. “The new 6.2-litre LS3 engine and its distinctive sound character is the result of years of hard work, testing, developing and evaluating this vehicle and I’m so proud of the end result,” said Ms. Watt. “This is absolutely the best car we have ever engineered and we are confident we are giving all our customers a compelling reason to put the latest Commodore in their driveway. We know that they will enjoy driving VFII as much as we enjoyed creating it.” The introduction of functional hood vents and fascia ducts were developed by Holden engineers with support from Melbourne’s Monash University wind tunnel, improving aerodynamics around the front corners of the vehicle. Hood vents, a stunning new front fascia as well as the introduction of clear lens tail lamps on sedan models and new LED tail lamps on all Sportwagon models gives VFII a more aggressive exterior to match the LS3 V8 under the bonnet. Commodore VFII goes on sale in October with demand for the unbridled V8 variant expected to be extremely strong.

Fishing Report Freshwater: EILDON Billy Mikus landed one of the fattest rainbow trout we have ever seen! Check out this beauty that came out of the pondage and weighed in at 3.5kg. It is almost the exact shape of a football! Good friend of the shop, Paul Delisle headed up to Eildon last Saturday and managed a couple of nice browns and a reddie while trolling pink tassie devils in the Fraser Park area. On Sunday, Paul smoked up his catch and reports it went down superbly with a bottle of Captain Morgans!
Port Phillip Bay: Ned & Zoran sussed things out on Port Phillip over the weekend and managed to sniff out early season reds! The boys report things will pick up even more with a small spike in the water temp. RYE BACK BEACH Shaun Makin ventured down to Rye Back Beach and ended up landing some quality salmon. Shaun reports he was using a Paternoster Rig with a surf popper and bluebait, a deadly combination! PORTARLINGTON 78 year old, Charlie Fava had a drift for squid out from Portarlington last week and was rewarded with this beautiful calamari taken on a green jig. QUEENSCLIFF Young guns, Beau, Bailey and Jay from the Whittlesea Angling Club fished out from Queenscliff during the weekend for a club event and did exceptionally well. Jay landed his first squid and it was also the biggest with a hood measuring 40cm! Together the boys came home with a great bag of calamari. MT MARTHA Darren Boniface wasn’t happy with Geelong missing finals and he found out why when he was fishing in 19m out from Mt Martha! Darren was targeting the snapper but pulled up this ling with a face that only a mother could love!
Western Port: TOP END Jayson Turner from Pro Red Fishing Charters reports that there are some quality reds coming from the top end this week. Fresh squid and salmon have been working best for Jayson on the reds, but also on the gummys and seven gills that have been kicking around too. Shaun Furtiere from Think Big Fishing Charters got the job done on a couple of cracker reds for his clients from Malaysia this week. Shaun reports that they landed 2 within 3 minutes of each other and the biggest weighed 6.4 kg. Big smiles all round, Great work Shaun!

Storm's Duffie hoping to finish career on top
If anyone deserves the fairytale finish it's Melbourne winger Matt Duffie. The 25-year-old will play his last NRL game at AAMI Park in the Storm's preliminary final against North Queensland on Saturday night after signing to play Super Rugby with Auckland next year. Duffie made his NRL debut back in 2010 but his career stalled following multiple shoulder and knee reconstructions. Returning in round 20 after being sidelined for 847 days, Duffie said there were times he thought he'd never play again. He has scored four tries since and formed a threatening combination with centre Will Chambers. "At one stage I thought I was no chance of even playing again so it's a bonus that I'm getting to play a prelim at home," Duffie said. "The last prelim I played was in 2011 and we lost that so I will be looking to finish on a high."

The Storm, who stood by Duffie during his long rehabilitation, hoped to keep the aerial specialist on their books. But Duffie said his injury experience had taught him that life as a football player in any code was short. He said he had spoken to Storm fullback Billy Slater, who has his own disappointment in missing their finals campaign following shoulder surgery. "When I told him I was moving on he said, `Everything's a bonus' and it is true," Duffie said. "Everything from here on in is a bonus and I really do appreciate everything in life and football now after going through those two years. "Everyday when I roll up for training I'm grateful." Duffie played rugby as a school boy in New Zealand and has been lured back by former All Blacks great Tana Umaga, who is the new Blues coach. The Blues have him earmarked as a fullback, a position where the Storm have a wealth of talent in Slater and Cameron Munster. "The thing I realised with the Blues is that it's a great opportunity to further my career in a key position rather than just playing on the wing," Duffie said. "That was an exciting part of it and with Tana, who has a bit of league background from his younger days, I felt really comfortable with making the transition."
AFL coaches name their All-Australian team T
he AFL coaches have taken a different approach to naming an All-Australian team, ditching traditional positions in favour of modern tactics. It is the first time the coaches have named their own best lineup for the season. The 22-man team, announced a few hours before Tuesday night's unveiling of the official All-Australian lineup, is also based on how the coaches voted in their champion player award. That means some notable omissions, including Hawthorn star Sam Mitchell, GWS defender Heath Shaw, Adelaide captain Taylor Walker and Crows small forward Eddie Betts. Carlton defender Zach Tuohy, Melbourne onballer Bernie Vince and Essendon tall utility Cale Hooker are named in the coaches' team for this season, but did not make the initial 40-player All-Australian squad.
There are also more traditional positions such as a small defender, two medium defenders and two key forwards.
While the players are arranged on the same lines as a traditional AFL team, the coaches' 22 does away with backs, half-backs, wings, half-forwards and forwards. Collingwood captain Scott Pendlebury was named skipper of the coaches' 22. Sydney's Jarrad McVeigh and the Western Bulldogs' Bob Murphy are the other captains in this alternative All-Australian team, but Pendlebury polled the most votes in the champion player award. Brayshaw concedes that not all the bestperforming players this season have made the coaches' team, using Mitchell as an obvious example. "Mitchell came eighth in the AFLCA's 2015 champion player Award with 69 votes, (but) he is not selected because he is the fifthranked inside midfielder and the team only needs four in this position," Brayshaw said.
AFL Coaches Association chief executive Mark Brayshaw said opposition analysts "On the other hand, Zach Tuohy came equal among their membership were asked earlier 100th in the award with 22 votes. this year to come up with the ideal structure "Zach was selected because he's the for a 2015 senior team. highest-rated small defender." "This was an important first step because we wanted our team to represent where the game has evolved, not what it looked like 100 years ago," Brayshaw said. "The 2015 AFLCA's All-Australian team is an illustration of what best practice looks like this season." That means a new position of high halfforward, plus five inside-outside midfielders, four inside midfielders, a tall/medium marking forward, a tall/medium marking defender and two ruckmen.

Folau wants slice of World Cup history W
allaby weapon Israel Folau has declared his desire to make this World Cup his own as he aims to carve out his own legacy - starting in the opening clash against Fiji. Seven World Cup debutants have been named to start against Fiji at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, but none of them will take the field with more pressure placed upon them than Folau.
The two-time John Eales medallist, dubbed `world class' by backs coach Stephen Larkham, puts much of that expectation upon himself as he seeks a place in history alongside the likes of Jonah Lomu and Tim Horan. "For every player this is where they want to dominate," he said. "This is as high as you go, play against the best of the best around the world. "Every player who steps out there, they want to play the best they can possibly play and it's no different to myself. "You don't want to try to force that too much otherwise it ends up too hard but I guess you want to be confident and play freeflowing type rugby. "That's not about force, but being the best you can be." Folau has spent his entire career in the spotlight, ever since making an immediate impact as an 18-year-old NRL winger with the Melbourne Storm.
"He has expectation every time he plays. He manages it very well," Genia said. "He goes through a very similar process every time he plays. "It obviously works for him and it's something that he trusts. "You've just got to let him do his thing (because) more often than not he's going to perform. "Little guys like me, I'll just follow him and see if I can get a try." Folau was kept quiet during the Wallabies' European tour last year, and admits to frustrations about not being able to inject himself more effectively into the attack. As the prime threat in a lethal Wallabies backline, Folau knows he has to have an impact - and he's worked hard to ensure he isn't frozen out of the game by teams starving him of the ball. Folau insists he wants to pick his moments, but not overplay his hand. "Last year obviously it was a little frustrating," he admits. "I felt oppositions on that spring tour did a great job so it was a credit to them. "But because I have high standards of myself I'm always going to be feeling down if I don't feel I'm playing to my expectations." Larkham said it was a challenge to find new ways to ensure Folau was involved enough in the game.
He has played on the biggest of stages from State of Origins, to Bledisloe Cups and "Someone like that you have to make sure both Super Rugby and NRL grand finals. that you've either got set-piece plays to get him into the game or your multi-phase Teammate Will Genia is unequivocal in his pattern gets him more touches than others," belief that the 26-year-old is ready to take he said. the World Cup head on.

Hawks are AFL prelim underdogs: Smith

"They're the No.1 side in the competition, so we're going to need to bring the heat to beat them."
awthorn are gunning for a historic third straight premiership but they are still claiming underdog status ahead of Friday night's AFL preliminary final against Fremantle.
Bookmakers have taken a different view, however, installing Alastair Clarkson's side as warm favourites to advance to the grand final.
Overcoming the Dockers' notoriously stingy defence will be one of the keys to the game but Smith, clearly a keen golfer, said that wasn't the only dangerous club in their bag. "I guess that's their one-wood but they can score quickly as well," he said.

The making of Jason Day golf's new No.1
GOLF
T
o consider how impressive Jason Day's rise to world No.1 is, you have to know where he's been.
Long before Day won his fourth tournament in six starts to become the youngest Australian to reach golf's summit, he had a plan to get there. But long before that, he was lucky to get anywhere. Golf began as an escape for Day. It was an escape from a hardscrabble poor childhood and from being teased at school for being 'right off the boat'. It was a place to find peace. And it was something he was good at. Father Alvin gave Jason a rotting threewood from the Beaudesert tip, and from the age of three began drilling the sport into the boy from their base in the small regional Queensland town.
But when Day was 12 his father died from stomach cancer. It was a moment that would first send the pre-teen off the rails but end up being a salvation of sorts.
It was at Queensland's Kooralbyn International School he met instructor Colin Swatton, his current coach and caddy. After a few years together at school Day told Swatton he wanted to be world No.1.
After Dening watched her boy start to drink alcohol and get in, and start, street fights she figured enough was enough.
He had read Tiger Woods' book and seen his accomplishments, and how early they came, and wanted a plan to emulate them.
Fearing for his life as much as anything she borrowed money and sent Jason to a boarding school where there was golf academy.
"We wrote out a plan, this is what you need to do, this is what you need to work on, and that's what we've kind of been shooting for," Day said.
"If my dad didn't pass away, I don't think I would have been in a good spot," Day admits.
"We said we were trying to get to No.1 in the world at 22. That was our whole plan. I'm five years late but it's better late than never, right?"
"When a door closes, another door opens up for that opportunity. And where I was based, I mean it wasn't the greatest place and who knows where I would have been.
"For my mum to sacrifice and my sisters to Alvin and his wife Dening worked long hours sacrifice for me, so I could get away to a golf academy and work hard, it's something at a meat factory to help pay for the sport, I'll always be grateful for." and the family existence.
Day had early opportunities to close out tournaments and start his rise to world No.1. Several near misses in majors and the fact he had closed just one of seven 54-hole leads on the US Tour after the British Open this year had plenty labelling him a choker.
