SYDNEY SIEGE : Inquest Revelations
I
ranian-born Man Haron Monis attracted the attention of the FBI as someone who had "the potential to incite others to violence", five years before he held 18 people hostage inside a Sydney cafe. While Monis wasn't believed to be a threat to national security his "ongoing offensive and nuisance behaviour" could "incite others to violence", said the November 2009 memorandum from an FBI office in Australia, obtained by The Associated Press. A shotgun-wielding Monis took customers and workers captive in a December 2014 siege at the Lindt Cafe in Sydney and demanded to be delivered an Islamic State flag, an incident that fuelled anxiety about the extremist group's expanding influence across the globe. Police stormed the cafe 16 hours later, after Monis fatally shot one of the hostages. Monis was shot dead by police and another hostage was killed in the crossfire.
website."
The memo noted that Monis, who also went by the name of Sheikh Haron, maintained on his website "inflammatory and fundamentalist material regarding the Islamic religion, jihad, suicide bombings and terrorism." A "veiled call to jihad against President Barack Obama" had also been observed on the site, according to the note. The siege is currently the subject of a longrunning coroner's inquest being held in Sydney.
Though it's been established that Australian authorities failed to detect that Monis was a threat, despite years of warnings, the memo The inquest, a shows how the FBI was itself concerned court-like proceeding about his rhetoric even before the Islamic convened after State group emerged as a prominent unusual international force and well ahead of deaths, the siege. is aimed at determining how the hostages and Monis died, The documents are heavily how authorities responded and redacted, and it was not whether the siege could have immediately clear what been prevented. follow-up action was taken in Australia or how broadly that assessment was shared across Australian law enforcement. The memo, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, was drafted amid concerns about writings that appeared on the website of the self-styled cleric with a long criminal history. In a redacted "synopsis" section of the memo, it discusses an effort to alert internet service providers "to prevent Haron from opening a new
NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Michael Fuller leaves the Lindt Cafe siege inquest after giving evidence in Sydney,
The inquest is also examining whether Monis was a lone wolf attempting to carry out an Islamic State group-inspired act, given that it appears he never established contact with the militant movement. Many believe Monis was simply a disturbed individual who was lashing out against a series of perceived personal injustices. An Australian government review last year found no major faults with multiple agencies that failed to detect the threat Monis posed, despite his being out on bail on sexual
assault and accessory to murder charges when he launched the attack. Then-Prime Minister Tony Abbott did, however, acknowledge the system itself had failed, saying Monis should never have been allowed into Australia, should not have been out on bail and should not have been able to get a gun. Monis was on authorities' radars for years before the siege. He arrived in Australia on a business visa in 1996 and was made a citizen in 2004. Before being granted citizenship, he was interviewed by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation multiple times for security assessments required as part of the immigration process. The agency ultimately found he wasn't a security risk. The security agency investigated him again between 2008 and 2009 after he had sent offensive letters to the families of dead Australian soldiers. Again, it found no threat. Australia's National Security Hotline received 18 calls and emails from the public related to posts on Monis' Facebook page in the six days leading up to the siege. The public's warnings, which referred to posts about making a pledge of allegiance to the "Caliph of the Muslims," were passed along to the security intelligence agency and the Australian Federal Police. The security agency determined the complaints did not indicate Monis intended to engage in terrorism.

Monkey bikes seized and crushed in Victoria
I
llegal and unsafe mini-motorbikes are being seized and crushed at the rate of almost one a day after a consumer safety blitz in Victoria.
Children under 15 make up half of all mini-motorbikerelated injuries
Almost 200 of the so-called monkey bikes, which can reach speeds of 80km/h, have been removed from sale in Victoria since October after failing safety standards. A dozen unsafe bikes were destroyed at a steel recyclers in Reservoir recently in front of the media. "Their steering is faulty, the brakes don't work and bits are known to fly off," Victorian Consumer Affairs Minister Jane Garrett told reporters. Three suppliers are now under active investigation and face fines of up to $1.1 million, Ms Garrett revealed. Mini-motorbikes are illegal on Victorian public roads but can be used on private property and at motorcycle riding clubs. Children under 15 make up half of all minimotorbike-related injuries over the three years to July 2015, Monash University data shows. "They have the potential to harm people just as much as a larger, registered bike and can still inflict serious injuries or even death," Victoria Police Senior Sergeant John Papas said.
The public crushing came a day after the premier admitted he was surprised a Melbourne teen charged with fatally hitting a mother with his mini-motorbike wasn't jailed after again breaching his strict bail conditions.
A Melbourne magistrate on Monday ruled Caleb Jakobsson, 19, should remain free but with additional restrictions in place. Daniel Andrews, when asked if he was surprised by the decision, said "That would be a fair comment, yes."

FRENCH POLICE PROTEST 'ANTI-COP' VIOLENCE
"Since the first demonstration on March 9, we notice that they generate the violence. We have been sprayed by gas, hit with batons, arrested," she said in an interview. "Troublemakers provoke clashes in the middle of peaceful protests. So it's very complicated for police forces to isolate and arrest them," Delage said on BFM television. French President Francois Hollande said more than 350 police officers have been injured in clashes and 60 people have been convicted amid the labour reform protests. Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve offered his "full support" to police following the weekly Cabinet meeting. He said the police have instructions to take "firm action" against those involved in violent clashes. "Anti-cop hatred comes from a small portion of the population ... but these 10 per cent are very violent," Jean-Marc Falcone, general director of the police, told Europe 1 radio.
Islamic State 'planning more attacks on France'
I
slamic State militants are gearing up for a campaign of bomb attacks on large crowds in France, host to next month's Euro 2016 soccer championships, its spy chief has said.
Rare remarks by Patrick Calvar, the head of France's DGSI internal intelligence agency, to the parliament's defence committee spelled out "a new form of attack ... characterised by placing explosive devices in places where there are large crowds and repeating this type of action to create a climate of maximum panic. "Clearly, France is the most threatened and we know that Daesh (Islamic State) is planning new attacks," Calvar told the committee, according to a transcript of his testimony released to the media. The comments came six months after militants killed 130 people in coordinated assaults on cafes, bars, a football
stadium and a music hall across Paris. He said the militant group had the numbers to launch the new attacks, including some 645 French citizens or residents currently in Syria or Iraq, of which 400 were fighters. A further 201 were either in transit to or from the region, he said. Euro 2016 starts on June 10 and runs for a month at 10 stadiums across France. About 2.5 million spectators are expected for 51 soccer matches involving 24 teams. There will also be "fan zones" for crowds watching games on big screens in major cities. France's police force is stretched after two militant attacks last year and regular street protests. However, the government say all measures are in place to ensure it runs smoothly. "We will not drop our guard," Prime Minister Manuel Valls said.

Election Promises may never see light of day
Much of what Bill Shorten and Malcolm Turnbull promise over the next few weeks they are unlikely to be able to deliver after July 2. Why? For starters, there's the Senate. Over the life of the AbbottTurnbull government, the coalition lost 37 per cent of votes on bills and motions in the upper house. If it wasn't for deals with the crossbench, the government would have lost a further 20 per cent of votes. A study released by the Parliamentary Budget Office in February showed "unlegislated" budget measures alone amounted to a $112 billion hit to the bottom line over a decade. That's a lot of promises unfulfilled. It's unclear exactly what the Senate will look like after the election. But there is no doubt whichever major party gets a lower house majority will still face a minority upper house.
make them more palatable.
Malcolm Turnbull insists a Labor government would ditch many of its policy positions - from boat turnbacks to a modest emissions trading scheme - because of having to deal with the Greens. This brings us to the second pressure point. Labor faces a life-or-death struggle against the Greens, especially in Left-leaning metropolitan seats and some regional areas. Right-faction heavyweight Bill Shorten has built his career on defeating, or at least assuaging, Left elements of the ALP and the union movement. Last year's ALP conference was a classic case of Shorten either beating the Left (getting support for boat turnbacks) or persuading the Right on a progressive issue (same-sex marriage). The Greens have been singleminded in attacking Labor for betraying progressive values, meaning Shorten is fighting the election on two fronts.

Melbourne lecturer dies on Mt Everest
A
Melbourne university lecturer who died on Mount Everest was trying to prove vegans could do anything. Maria Strydom, who also goes by Marisa, was on a seven-week expedition with her husband Robert Gropel - who has also been injured during the trek. Dr Strydom and Dr Gropel are vegans who were determined to climb the highest mountains on each continent. "It seems that people have this warped idea of vegans being malnourished and weak," she said in March. "We want to prove that vegans can do anything and more." The 34-year-old's family say the couple's GPS tracker stopped working on Friday. A single transmission from the tracker on Saturday gave them hope but a Google search on Saturday night delivered the devastating news that Dr Strydom had died, her sister Aletta Newman said. "Before I went to bed last night, I came across this article in the Himalayan Times naming my sister as having died on Everest

and that is the absolute first I'd heard of it," Ms Newman said. Seven Summit Treks confirmed Dr Strydom's death but said it didn't have her family's details to get in touch. "We could have informed her family but we don't have any contact information," the company said.

amilies of several Australian MH17 crash victims are reportedly planning to sue the Russian Federation and President Vladimir Putin over claims the nation has hidden its involvement in the downing of the plane by a missile in 2014. Sydney legal firm LHD lawyers reportedly served a claim on behalf of five Australian families in the European Court of Human Rights on May 9, Fairfax has reported. Sydney man Tim Lauschet, whose mother Gabriele died on the plane, the Perth parents of scientist Fatima Dyczynski, and the New Zealand widow of Robert Ayley are believed to be among those seeking $10 million per passenger. US aviation lawyer Jerry Skinner, who won compensation from Libya for
victims of the 1988 Lockerbie disaster, is leading the 3500page claim.
Court documents reportedly allege the Russian Federation worked to keep its involvement in the crash hidden, failed to conduct internal investigations and that its cyber warfare unit hacked the Dutch Safety Board investigative website. During an inquest in Sydney on Tuesday into the deaths of six NSW victims, Mr Lauschet revealed he couldn't afford to keep the family home after his mother's death. The inquest supported a finding by the Dutch Safety Board that MH17 was shot out of the sky by a Russian-made surface-toair missile over Ukraine on July 17, 2014 by unknown persons. A criminal investigation is ongoing.

12-year-old 'child prodigy' to start Uni. A
12-year-old Sacramento student who already has three community college degrees and has been accepted to two University of California campuses says he plans on studying biomedical engineering and becoming a doctor and medical researcher by the time he turns 18. Tanishq Abraham, 12, looks into a microscope in a lab at American River College in Sacramento, Calif. He says he plans on studying biomedical engineering and becoming a doctor and medical researcher by the time he turns 18.
Tanishq Abraham has been accepted to UC Davis and received a regents scholarship to UC Santa Cruz, but he has yet to decide which university he'll attend, Sacramento television station CBS 13 reported on Sunday. "I think I'll be 18 when I get my MD," he said. Tanishq started community college at age seven and last year he received associate's degrees from American River College, a community college in Sacramento, in general science; maths and physical science; and foreign language studies. Professors at the college didn't initially want him in their classes because of his age. But finally a professor agreed to let him attend if his mother, a doctor of veterinary medicine, also took the class.
"There were times when I had to explain general relativity and special relativity to my mom," he said. Biology professor Marlene Martinez said he was never afraid to ask lot of questions. "In lecture he would always pop up with 'so, does that mean ...' or 'what about this?'" Martinez said. Tanishq, who joined the IQ society Mensa at only four years old, has always picked up knowledge quickly, his father, Bijou Abraham, said.
"We tested him and discovered that he was pretty smart," he said. "We were surprised when we started giving him advanced stuff and he was picking it up really fast." Tanishq says child geniuses are often seen as odd. "When you think of a genius, you think of a mad scientist kind of thing," he said. But he pointed out he's just an ordinary kid who likes learning and microscopes but also playing video games. "I just think learning is fun," Tanishq said.

Officer shoots gunman near White House A
US Secret Service agent has shot a gunman near the White House while President Barack Obama was out golfing.
"A couple officers drew their guns, went right at him and within two or three seconds we heard a gunshot," Polivka said.
The Secret Service, which protects the president and his family, briefly locked down the White House as a precaution.
The Secret Service, which also guards other top dignitaries, said all those under its protection were safe.
Vice-President Joe Biden was secured within the White House complex during the lockdown, a White House spokeswoman said.
The shooting followed several incidents that raised questions about the Secret Service's performance.
The shooting just off 17th and E Streets happened near what is known as the South Lawn outside the home and offices of the president. When a man carrying a gun had approached a checkpoint uniformed officers ordered him to stop and drop the weapon, the Secret Service said.

"When the subject failed to comply with the verbal commands, he was shot once by a Secret Service agent and taken into custody," it said. The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department said the man was taken to hospital in a critical condition. Brett Polivka, a 26-yearold visitor from Texas who was near the south side of the White House, said a man
who appeared to be in his mid-20s had walked to a gate of the White House holding a silvercoloured gun pointed at the ground, .
In September 2014 a knifecarrying man jumped a fence and ran into the White House in one of the worst security breaches during Obama's tenure. That episode led to the resignation of the Secret Service's director. In March 2015 two Secret Service agents capped off a night of drinking by driving into a White House barricade centimetres away from a suspicious package investigators were examining. In 2011 a man hit the White House with automatic rifle fire, though damage to the building was not discovered for several days. A member of the US Secret Service Uniformed Division stands on guard on Pennsylvania Avenue, near the White House.

Illegal gold rush hits Indonesia’s forest

They will earn around $A1.40 an hour, while the men above ground - who haul large sacks of rock upon their shoulders down steep cliffs - will make even less. To break this rock down, it is trucked to large rotating steel drums called tromols.
Up to 2000 grams of mercury can be needed to produce about two grams of gold, leading to tens of thousands of kilograms of emissions a year at individual sites. Once mercury ends up in the

Sony is expected to market the new products within three years. The partnership seeks to develop an AI technology that "empowers machines to learn continually from interaction with the real world, enabling everyday things that sense and act to get smarter, more skilled, and more knowledgeable with experience,"

An example of a product with an ability to learn autonomously from interactions with users and other elements of the environment could be a camera, which over time is able to suggest practical and innovative solutions to the photographer. little known about the long-term health effects of the devices, which produce a vapour inhaled by the user, and claim they encourage people to smoke tobacco.
New research shows that 18-29 year olds are the biggest users of the battery-powered devices, but smoke them less frequently than older adults.
Nine per cent of those surveyed by the Cancer Institute said they had used e-cigarettes in the 18 months to June 2015, up from seven per cent in 2013.
While adults over 30 are most likely to use e-cigarettes to help them quit or cut down smoking, a quarter of young people use them because they are "not as bad for your health" as cigarettes.
The rate of e-cigarette use was highest (16 per cent) among those aged 18-29, with most also still smoking tobacco.
The findings were based on a Cancer Institute of NSW study, which surveyed about 3000 tobacco smokers and people who recently quit to find out who used e-cigarettes and why. E-cigarettes are legal in Australia but the nicotine in them is classified as a dangerous poison, the sale and possession of which is illegal. Debate has been raging about the safety of e-cigarettes, with Britain's Royal College of Physicians in April backing their promotion as a safe alternative to smoking. But critics argue that there is
While the most popular reason among young people for using e-cigarettes was health, many also believed they would help them quit. Experts from the Cancer Institute said they were worried that so many people were using e-cigarettes as well as traditional cigarettes. "Despite the fact that many e-cigarette users reported using them to assist quitting, most users in this sample were dual users," the study's lead author, Sally Dunlop, wrote in the Medical Journal of Australia on Monday. "Many reported that they used e-cigarettes to cut down on the number of cigarettes they
"Britain's Royal College of Physicians backing them as a safe alternative to smoking" smoked. For avoiding the risks of smoking-related premature death, however, reducing cigarette numbers is much less effective than quitting." Despite a ban on the sale of e-cigarettes containing nicotine in Australia, most users are buying them from overseas via the internet. In an editorial published in the
MJA, experts from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, Curtin University and Sydney University argued that regulators need to take a twintrack approach to e-cigarettes, with tighter rules around their marketing and sale. Controls applied to tobacco product promotions should also be applied.
VICTORIAN UBER DRIVER WINS LEGAL APPEAL An Uber driver has won a landmark appeal that means the ride-sharing service can operate freely in Victoria.
disappointed the appeal succeeded on an "obscure technical argument" and is considering an appeal.
The court case over a $9 Uber fare is expected to cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars after Nathan Brenner won an appeal against a $900 fine and charges that he illegally picked up passengers.
Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan says figuring out what to do with Uber is taking the Labor government "a lot longer" than expected.
Uber was effectively outlawed in Victoria when a magistrate last year found Mr Brenner guilty of two counts of operating a commercial passenger vehicle without a licence, and one of driving a commercial passenger vehicle without driver accreditation. But Victorian County Court judge Geoffrey Chettle has today dismissed the charges and ordered the Taxi Services Commission to pay the costs of Mr Brenner's appeal.
"I disappointingly can't give you an exact time frame on that because we are needing to do more work and yesterday's court case does add to that work, because it does highlight the complexity of the issue," Ms Allan said. An expert panel looked into ride sharing and handed their results to the government in August 2015. Ms Allan said they were "inconclusive". Instead a group of Victorian ministers is looking at how to regulate Uber.
The Taxi Services Commission says it is "While other
states have talked about regulating ride sharing, the three states that are talking in this space, none of them have passed any legislation," Ms Allan said. Consumer lawyer associate professor Jeannie Paterson said the court case win might not be as far reaching as some might expect, but it showed Uber wasn't going away. "I think that it does pose a real prompt to the government, to just make a decision about what it's going to do instead of dithering,"

enetically engineered (GE) food is safe to eat, top scientists say, following extensive research into the controversial products.
The Mothers Against Genetic Engineering in Food and the Environment (Madge) posted this billboard portraying a naked "genetically engineered" women with four breasts attached to a milking machine, around major New Zealand cities in 2003 that sparked anger among pro-genetic engineering (GE) groups.
The practice of genetically engineering crops has been criticised for its potential impact on human health and the environment. The US government advisory body - which counts more than 300 Nobel laureates as members - said its committee found there was no evidence to suggest genetically engineered foods had adverse effects.
He added that "new technologies in genetic engineering and conventional breeding are blurring the once clear distinctions between these two crop-improvement approaches".
A spokesman for the National Academies said the study committee "found no substantiated evidence of a difference in risks to human health between current commercially available genetically engineered crops and conventionally bred crops, nor did it find conclusive cause-andeffect evidence of environmental problems

Genetic engineering is a way of genetically modifying food that involves the intentional introduction of a targeted change in a plant, animal, or microbial gene sequence to achieve a specific result.
The expert committee of report authors studied research on the genetically engineered characteristics in maize (corn), soya bean, and cotton, which account for almost all commercial GE crops in the US.

$US81 million cyber bank heist A
Bangladesh government-appointed panel investigating the theft of $US81 million ($A112 million) from the country's central bank has found that SWIFT, the international banking payments network, committed a number of mistakes in connecting up a local network, the panel head says. "We have shown that SWIFT made a number of errors that made it easy for the hackers," Mohammed Farashuddin, a former governor of the Bangladeshi central bank, told reporters on Sunday. He said SWIFT, a cooperative owned by 3000 financial institutions, could not escape responsibility as it had connected its network to the central bank's new real time gross settlement (RTGS) system launched in October for domestic transactions. "SWIFT is responsible for the heist of Bangladesh Bank as it approached the central bank for the installation of RTGS real time gross settlement," Farashuddin said.
SWIFT has already rejected allegations made by Dhaka that it had been at fault, saying its financial messaging system remained secure and had not been breached by the hackers during the attack
on Bangladesh Bank. The hackers broke into the computer systems of the central bank in early February and issued instructions through the SWIFT network to transfer $US951 million of its deposits held at the New York Federal Reserve Bank to accounts in the Philippines and Sri Lanka. Most of the transactions were blocked but four went through amounting to $US81 million, prompting allegations by Bangladeshi officials that both the Fed and SWIFT had failed to detect the fraud.
Bangladeshi police and a bank official said earlier this month that the central bank became more vulnerable to hackers when technicians from SWIFT connected the new bank transaction system to SWIFT messaging three months before the cyber theft. The local Daily Star newspaper quoted Farashuddin as saying that SWIFT failed to implement 13 security measures in the installation of the system. A spokeswoman for SWIFT said she had no immediate comment to make.
Scientists say reptiles may dream like us
R
esearch in a German laboratory involving five lizards called Australian bearded dragons indicates these reptiles may dream and could prompt a fundamental reassessment of the evolution of sleep.
sleep stages with mammals and birds, sister groups among the land vertebrates, suggests the sleep traits emerged far earlier than previously suspected in the common evolutionary ancestors of the three groups.
Scientists said they had documented for the first time that reptiles, like people, experience rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep and another sleep stage called slow-wave sleep.
In human REM sleep, the eyes move rapidly, the heart rate and blood pressure rise, limb muscles become incapacitated and dreams flourish.
Until now, only mammals and birds were known to experience these. Because REM sleep is when dreaming occurs in people, the findings suggest that these lizards dream, too. But, what would bearded dragons dream about? “If you forced me to speculate and to use a loose definition of dreaming, I’d speculate that those dreams are about recent notable events: insects, maybe a place where there are good insects, an aggressive male in the next terrarium, et cetera,” said neuroscientist Gilles Laurent, director of the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Germany. “If I were an Australian dragon living in Frankfurt, I’d be dreaming of a warm day in the sun.” When REM and slow-wave sleep first evolved has remained a mystery. The discovery that reptiles share these important
Slow-wave sleep, also called deep sleep, is the most restful sleep period, marked by slow brainwaves and little dreaming. These stages are thought to be useful for consolidation, storage and erasure of memories and other purposes. Some scientists had hypothesised
REM and slow-wave sleep might be linked to warm-bloodedness and evolved independently in birds and mammals. Laurent said the findings suggest these sleep traits probably evolved at least as long ago as in the common ancestor of reptiles, birds and mammals: small lizard-like animals that lived between 300 million and 320 million years ago.

JENNIFER LOPEZ: I am not a diva J ennifer Lopez has hit back at constant reports suggesting she is a diva, insisting it's a label she doesn't deserve.
The 46-year-old has built a huge career out of singing and acting, but her stellar success has prompted some to repeatedly brand her "difficult" or "prima donna" - and JLo does not appreciate the reputation. "I got a moniker of being 'the diva', which I never felt I deserved which I don't deserve - because I've always been a hard worker, on time, doing what I'm supposed to do, and getting that label because you reach a certain amount of success," she explained to The Hollywood Reporter. The Maid in Manhattan star added she would often feel "crippled" to voice her opinion and felt the need to stand up for herself in a male-dominated environment. "Certain directors and the boys' club that they form can make you feel like, 'Oh, I can't say anything'," she continued. "I was always fascinated by how I could see (a man) being late or being belligerent to a crew and it being totally acceptable; meanwhile, I'd show up 15 minutes late and be berated. And you watch this happen over and over and over again." The double standards Lopez has witnessed throughout her career is something she is keen to change, and she will continue to speak up for herself regardless of what others in the industry think. "Like, we're not allowed to have certain opinions or even be passionate about something, or they'll be like, 'God, she's really difficult'," she said. "It's like, 'Am I? Am I difficult because I care?' I've always been fascinated by how much more well-behaved we have to be than men."
Elijah Wood talks child abuse in Hollywood C
hild actor turned Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood has spoken up about alleged "organised" child abuse in Hollywood. Wood who's best known for portraying Frodo in the fantasy franchise said while his mother protected him from abuse when he arrived in Hollywood at the age of eight, he said it was clear there was abuse happening. Speaking to the Sunday Times, Wood described the "darkness" in the industry and explained paedophiles were often guarded by powerful names in the industry. "Clearly something major was going on in Hollywood. It was all organised. There are a lot of vipers in this industry, people who only have their own interests in mind. There is a darkness in the underbelly if you can imagine it, it's probably happened," Wood told the British publication. The actor agreed the problem was still prevalent in Hollywood and said innocent victims are often unable to speak up about abuse because of fear of prevailing powers. "If you're innocent, you have very little knowledge of the world and you want to succeed, people with parasitic interests will see you as their prey," he said. "There's the tragedy of attempting to reveal what is happening to innocent people. They can be squashed but their lives have been irreparably damaged." Wood drew parallels to the Jimmy Savile sex abuse scandal to rock the British entertainment industry. "You all grew up with Savile... it must have been devastating," Wood told the Sunday Times. In 2012, British police said the BBC presenter had abused hundreds of victims, mainly youngsters, over six decades until his death in October 2011.

Gillian Anderson responds to 007 hopes

-Files actress Gillian Anderson has joined in on the fan-fuelled campaign to find the next James Bond. The actress has become the fans' choice to fill Daniel Craig's shoes after the actor announced he would not be continuing on as the suave spy in the upcoming movies. Anderson responded to the support by re-tweeting a fan-made poster on her official account that features the actress in front of the traditional 007 logo. "It's Bond. Jane Bond. Thanks for all the votes! (And sorry, don't known who made poster but I love it!) #NextBond," the actress tweeted. The post has so far received 17,000 likes and generated more than 7,000 retweets. "@GillianA This women is FIERCE but classy all at once She IS the #NextBond & already has perfect English accent," one fan tweeted. "I love that the #NextBond tag is mostly Gillian Anderson with a couple of dudes thrown in here and there," another wrote. While Anderson remains the fan favourite, other suggestions include Emily Blunt, Tom Hardy and Tom Hiddleston as potential candidates for the spy's role.

was extended to 10 years when he was found to have drugs in his cell. He was also put in solitary confinement from 2012 to 2014.
The 71-year-old actor discovered he had stage four throat cancer in the summer of 2010, just months after his son Cameron, 30, was sentenced to five years in prison for heroin possession.
Another tough time in the actor's life came when he and Catherine Zeta-Jones split briefly in 2012. But the pair have moved on from that situation, and Douglas told Kelly that he loves his wife "more and more every day".
It made the year very difficult to cope with, Douglas told Megyn Kelly in an interview on Tuesday. "That was a one-two shot, that was a pretty dark moment," he said. "My oldest son Cameron has struggled with addiction for most of his life, he was a serious heroin addict, that brought him into federal prison. "It broke my heart, the combination. When he was sentenced, I knew the amount of time he was going to be spending in federal prison combined with my early cancer at the same time." After serving three years in jail, Cameron's sentence

Captain America has found a worthy competitor in a bunch of flightless birds.
T
he Angry Birds Movie soared to $US39 million in its debut weekend, knocking Captain America: Civil War off its first-place perch, while new adult comedies Neighbors 2 and the The Nice Guys struggled to get their footing, according to comScore estimates Sunday. Rovio Animation spearheaded the production of The Angry Birds Movie, which cost around $73 million to make, and opened strong internationally last weekend. The film has already earned $150 million worldwide, according to estimates from Sony, which is distributing the film. The Angry Birds Movie features the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad and Danny McBride and has received mixed reviews from critics in its attempt to create a compelling story out of a fairly simplistic appbased game. But audiences under 25 gave the film an A CinemaScore which should help the film continue to perform well over Memorial Day weekend. "It's very difficult turning a video game property into a successful movie," said Josh Greenstein, Sony's President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution. "To use a bad pun, we are flying high." Video game adaptations have not had the best track record, but comScore's Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian notes that the success of Angry Birds likely has more to do with its family appeal and ingrained brand recognition.

The PG-13 rated Captain America: Civil War wasn't too far behind, earning an additional $US33.1 million this weekend for a secondplace spot, which brings its domestic total to $347.4 million. And, even in its third weekend in theaters, the superhero proved mightier than a fresh batch of R-rated comedies, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and The Nice Guys, both of which underwhelmed in their debuts.
While the comedy openings might be less than hoped for, both could still provide decent counterprogramming to the spectacle-driven films opening on Memorial Day weekend, when mega productions X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking Glass take over.
The R-rated 70s-set buddy comedy The Nice Guys, meanwhile, grossed $11.3 million for a fourth-place spot. Warner Bros. handled the "PG is the hot new rating now. Meet Elle
When I arrived at the RSPCA I was very lame as my feet had not been cared for properly for. I’m better now but due to the previous damage to my hooves I need to have shoes on both of my front feet while they are continuing to grow out. My farrier thinks with a few more months of having shoes on my feet should be as good as new! I’m really sweet and I do like to be fussed over, but I’m also pretty independent. I need someone with time to let my feet get completely better, and patience and knowledge to help me grow into the amazing young horse I know I have the potential to be. RSPCA NO. 832710

abradors are often overweight because they have a gene linked to overeating, new research has suggested. The most common breed of dog in the UK and the US, labradors are more likely to become obese than others.
Scientists at the University of Cambridge have discovered that 23 per cent of the loveable dogs have a variant of an obesityrelated gene strongly associated with weight and appetite. The scientists even believe that understanding how the gene - which is also found in humans - works in dogs might help tackle the obesity crisis. Professor Stephen O'Rahilly, Co-Director of the Wellcome Trust-Medical Research Council Institute of Metabolic Science, says: "Common genetic variants affecting the POMC gene are associated with human body weight and there are even some rare obese people who lack a very similar part of the POMC gene to the one that is missing in the dogs."

BIG GUIDE 37
Andy Phillips – The 70’S Jam Sessions
T
here is a buzz about Andy Phillips and deservedly so! His profile has risen quickly to become one of the hardest working and most talked about local artists to come on the local scene the last few years. Andy is known as a cool, likeable, laid-back dude, who can play the hell out of a guitar. Launching this week, Andy Phillips presents House Of Rock, a weekly jam session paying tribute to the 1970’s every Wednesday night at the Seaford Hotel complete with guitar riffs and raw emotion. Take a step back to pre MTV, pre mobile phones and pre digital age. A time when things were less complicated: good mates, beer, transistor radios, the car stereo, dancing and live rock music at the local. Revisit the 70’s every Wed night with Andy Phillips, backed by a rocking band and special guest musicians each week. Paying tribute to the rock greats of the era: Thin Lizzy, ZZ Top, Led Zepplin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, AD/DC, The Doors, Hendrix, Creedence, Pink Floyd and many more. Growing up listening only to his Dad’s vinyl rock collection - it steeped into his blood; Andy can do justice and pay tribute to the music of the era that very few musicians of his age can. Get down to the Seaford Hotel every Wednesday night for House Of Rock 70’s Jam Sessions featuring Andy Phillips and guests from 7.30pm. #HouseOfRockSeaford

onda Australia has experienced unprecedented pre-orders for the all-new Civic ahead of its June arrival into dealerships.
Unprecedented pre-orders for the all-new Honda Civic
At the launch of the all-new Civic in Albury recently, Honda Australia Director, Mr. Stephen Collins, said Honda Australia’s pre-launch strategy for the Civic had created a real buzz among small car buyers. “The last time we had such strong interest from prospective customers was when we were launching the HR-V and it has now become one of the strongest competitors in the small SUV segment,” Mr. Collins said. “With the arrival of the

Once they drive the Civic and experience the ride and handling, impressive interior and superior connectivity, we’re confident it will go straight to the top of shopping lists.” Initial pre-order interest has centred on the RS and VTi-LX models. The RS is $31,790* and the VTi-LX is $33,590*. “Early adopters generally like
cars that have a strong standard equipment list and the features in RS and VTi-LX are particularly competitive in the segment,” Mr Collins said. “The RS is very keenly priced but more importantly, the all-new Civic has a price-point to appeal to a range of customers looking for a safe, fuel-efficient car.” The five-model line-up starts with the VTi at $22,390*, topping out at $33,590* for the VTi-LX.”
Headlining the all-new Civic is an all-new turbocharged 1.5-litre DOHC, direct-injected and inline 4-cylinder engine with variable valve timing electrical control (VTC) and high response turbocharger with electronic waste gate, producing 127kW / 220Nm. The 1.5L engine is available as As the sporty variant, the RS features distinctive standard on the VTi-L, RS and VTi-LX. The VTi and styling. Honda has added an integrated body kit VTi-S are powered by Honda’s proven 1.8L engine, with striking black grille, LED headlights, LED front producing 104kW / 174Nm. The Civic sedan leads foglights, sporty 17-inch alloy wheels, sunroof and a three-pronged launch strategy for the model. After RS badging. the sedan, the Civic hatch arrives in the first half of The all-new Civic will be built at Honda’s Prachinburi 2017, followed by the performance Type R hatch.

FISHINGREPORT I
n our latest fishing report we discuss what species are on the bite with an insight into the mysterious broad bill sword fish. These stunning creatures of the deep have gone undetected in local waters for who knows how long. All we know now is that they have been found. These fish have been targeted for years in areas such as Tasmania. However, the time is now for these phenomenal sports fish to provide enjoyment for anglers around the area of Cape Conran and Mallacoota. Who knows where they will be spotted next. Species that are on the bite: Considering the recent influx of terrible weather; Species like whiting, gummy shark, snapper, pinkies, squid and Tuna haven’t been affected at all. The disturbed water provides opportunity for species like whiting and snapper especially to ambush and attack distressed baitfish and other food sources that are washed around. This provides prime opportunity for YOU, if you’re keen enough to brave the conditions and obtain a hefty reward of fishing action. Be careful though, safety should always be the number one priority when on the water as the correct knowhow and experience is also optimal. Gummy sharks: Despite the recent conditions Gummy shark’s have been targeted more and more as the colder months arise due to the lack of ‘pest fish’. These fish usually include eagle rays, bull rays and banjo sharks. Areas such as Somers, Balnarring and the western entrance have been the go to areas with the banks of Somers and Balnarring providing some good size Gummy’s during late hours of the night.
Brought to you by:
Snapper: The late run of thumping snapper is yet to end as big reds up to 6kg are still being landed in Port Phillip bay and Westernport . In areas such as Mt Martha and Mornington the rough weather entices the fish in closer creating an opportunity for land based fisherman to get their hands on a massive red. Westernport have also had an action packed late run with areas like Boultons and the Western entrance providing good quality fish. Whiting: The season for whiting is not over. Good quality fish have been caught in all of the common spots. Middle Spit and Tortoise bank standing out as hot spots. Running sinker rigs have been a necessity lately with the timid bites as the whiting have a smaller chance of getting spooked. Match this rig with fine worm hooks, shiners or circle hooks and the tried and tested pippy as bait for the best results. Good luck on your next fishing adventure! Todd

occeroos boss Ange Postecoglou has thrown his support behind Archie Thompson's plans to play on beyond his Melbourne Victory career. Thompson's time at Victory ends this month, with a final home match on Tuesday night in the Asian Champions League against Jeonbuk Motors.
Postecoglou, who coached the striker during his spell in charge of Victory, said the issue for Thompson wouldn't be his ability but finding a new home.
Thompson, who last played with the Socceroos in 2013, also leaves behind a stunning international record. His haul of 13 goals against American Samoa in 2001 still stands as the world record in an international match and Postecoglou said his longevity and achievements didn't surprise him. "He'll go out there tonight and he's probably score tonight. It says everything about him. "He's an amazing A-League story. Very much one of the key players - if not the key player - in the journey of the A-League ... and he's getting a proper send-off."
The former Victory coach is eager to see his old side and Sydney FC continue to progress through the competition to continue playing "If he wants to play on, he should. You're against top-quality continental opponents. a long time retired," he said.

Hinchcliffe grabs 100th Indy 500 pole
C
anada's James Hinchcliffe turned in a fearless performance to grab pole for the Indianapolis 500 one year after being critically injured in a crash during practice at the famed Brickyard. Hinchcliffe will be joined on the front row for next Sunday's (Monday AEST) IndyCar showcase by two Americans, Josef Newgarden and 2014 Indy 500 winner Ryan HunterReay. Two days of qualifying at the sprawling Indianapolis Motor Speedway reached a pulsating climax when Hinchcliffe, the last car out onto the track, stormed around the 2.5 mile oval in a four-lap average speed of 230.760 mph (371 kph). It was a big day for the little guys at the Speedway, as Hinchcliffe and Newgarden, driving for two of IndyCar's smaller outfits, upstaged two of the sports giants Penske Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing. Australia's Will Power will start from sixth while compatriot Matt Brabham qualified 27th.

McIlroy's eagle clinches Irish Open R
ory McIlroy eagled the final hole to clinch his first victory of the season at the Irish Open, his home tournament where he's famously struggled over the years. McIlroy's three-shot triumph over Scotland's Russell Knox and Bradley Dredge of Wales wasn't smooth sailing. But the Northern Ireland native prevailed with a three-under 69, thanks to superior driving power that allowed him to birdie the K Club's first three par-5 holes - then demolish the competition with his final powerful approach shot. His 253-metre (276-yard) second strike on the 18th landed within three feet of the pin to the deafening cheers of tens of thousands who had braved downpours and hail showers to witness the moment. McIlroy grinned and brushed away a tear or two as he approached the green.
Garcia wins Byron Nelson golf
S
ergio Garcia has won the Byron Nelson Classic in Texas, matching the late Seve Ballesteros for most career victories by a Spaniard on the PGA Tour. Garcia collected his ninth tour victory when he edged American Brooks Koepka in a playoff at the TPC Four Seasons in Irving, Texas. Garcia carded a closing 68, while Koepka shot 71 after they finished at 15-under 265, one stroke ahead of American Matt Kuchar.
Barca complete double with King's Cup win
T
en-man Barcelona retained the King's Cup with a 2-0 victory over Sevilla to complete a domestic double. Extra-time goals by Jordi Alba and Neymar at the Vicente Calderon stadium were enough to see the La Liga champions home, despite having Javier Mascherano sent off in the 36th minute. Sevilla had Ever Banega dismissed in added time, Alba opening the scoring in the 97th after a superb defence-splitting chip from Lionel Messi.

He had failed to make the Irish Open cut since 2012. His previous best was seventh place in 2008. McIlroy looked in danger of squandering his three-stroke lead at the start of Sunday's final round as Knox, playing alongside him, putted impressively while McIlroy wasted opportunity after opportunity on the greens, including a miss for bogey from barely two feet on the par-4 11th hole. When Knox birdied the 14th and 15th holes to seize a one-shot lead, McIlroy responded with arguably his greatest shot of the year - a go-for-broke drive across the River Liffey that landed improbably in the heart of the 16th green. As the fans roared their approval, a rattled Knox struck his only back-nine bogey as McIlroy two-putted for a go-ahead birdie. McIlroy nearly birdied the par-3 17th as well, but simply laughed when the ball circled the cup and rolled a few inches back in his direction.

Vardy to miss clash with Socceroos T
he Socceroos will be spared a date with England's man of the moment Jamie Vardy as he's leaving the national team camp this week to get married.
The Leicester City striker scored a late winner in England's unconvincing 2-1 friendly win over Turkey in Manchester on Sunday (Monday AEST).

goalkeeper Volkan Babacan to sweep home a close-range winner in the 83rd minute.
The Tottenham striker missed a 72nd minute penalty before Vardy capitalised on successive mistakes from Turkey
While Hodgson loses Vardy for the Australia match, he gains captain Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Marcus Rashford after the attacking trio played in cup finals with their clubs over the previous week. Sturridge scored in Liverpool's Europa League final loss to Liverpool while Rashford and Rooney lifted the FA Cup with a 2-1 extra time win over Mile Jedinak's Crystal Palace.
England now prepare to face Australia in another friendly in Sunderland on Friday night, manager Roy Hodgson's last chance to finalise his squad before next month's European Championships.
Rashford, who only debuted for Manchester United in February, is considered a longshot to travel to the tournament.
Hodgson admitted the "public might think it odd" to allow Premier League hero Vardy leave less than three weeks before the European Championships but said he owed the forward a favour.
The England boss has to cut three members of his provisional 26-man squad and Jack Wilshere - a Hodgson favourite - and Raheem Sterling failed to make a convincing case for selection against Turkey.
"The major reason was he had to cancel his wedding last year when I called him up," he said.
Kane's goal was his 32nd for club or country this season, and he appears one of the few guaranteed starters against Russia in Marseille on July 11 in England's first game at the Euros.
"So it was more difficult for me than it would have been otherwise to complain about this week's date. "We know Jamie, we're satisfied with him. I don't think his place in the team, or the squad, is under enormous threat."
The loss was just Turkey's first in 14 games, showing they could spring a surprise in France, where they will play Spain, Czech Republic and Croatia in Group D.

Mundine wants 'Blue at Uluru' with Green

orget the `Rumble in the Jungle', Anthony Mundine wants a `Blue at Uluru' with Danny Green.
Ten years after Mundine beat Green in a unanimous points decision in Sydney, the pair continue to squabble over the terms of a rich rematch - reportedly valued at $8 million - but now a new venue has been put on the table.
"I would like (the fight) to be at Uluru," Mundine told the Triple M Grill Team on Friday. "We'll talk to the traditional owners and we'll see what we can do." It was understood the fighters were initially hoping to stage the big-money bout in Melbourne in August. But Mundine's latest wish throws an iconic Australian landmark into the promotional mix - a sacred indigenous site that would carry special significance for the proud 40-yearold Aborigine.

Mundine is prepared to fight significantly lighter than Green - who he wants to drop to 83kg - but only if he gets a 60-40 share of the purse. "If I'm going to give up 13 kilograms... then give me something. Give me some motivation to do it," Mundine said. "It's never been done in boxing history, someone from super welterweight, jump all the way over light heavyweight to catch weight." A catch weight describes a weight limit for a fight that does not fall in line with the traditional limits for weight classes. Regardless of the jump in weight, Mundine typically backed himself to win even if Green entered the ring over 10kg heavier. "I'm ready to go man. I told ya. 60-40, I will whip his arse. I will knock his arse out, for real," Mundine said.

Hayne faces uphill battle for Rio dream
J
arryd Hayne's Olympic ambition still burns brightly after the weekend's London Sevens tournament, but he faces a near-impossible task to force his way into Fiji's 12-man Rio squad. On current form, and having had barely 15 minutes of combined match time across six Sevens games at Twickenham, he won't be picked. This is a Fijian side celebrating back-toback Rugby Sevens World Series victories, secured with a fourth-place finish at the London tournament, which was won by Scotland who upset South Africa 27-26 with a last-gasp victory in the final.

itchell Pearce is not at his State of Origin best, his Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson says.
Pearce starred in the Roosters' round nine thumping of Newcastle in his return from suspension, but has struggled to replicate that form in the two NRL rounds since. The incumbent NSW playmaker was one of the Roosters' best in their 32-20 loss to Canterbury on Sunday but Robinson said Pearce has some improving to do.
"I still think he is finding his best but I thought he played a lot of football today."
Cronulla's James Maloney, who played alongside Pearce for NSW in the 2013 interstate series, and South Sydney halfback Adam Reynolds are the favourites to be named in coach Laurie Daley's Blues halves when the side for game one is named on Monday. The Roosters will likely lose Boyd Cordner and Blake Ferguson to Blues duties and Aidan Guerra to Queensland.
"I don't think there was any Origin at all in that," Robinson said in the post-match press "To be honest I couldn't care less about the conference. Origin team," Robinson said. Forgotten Dees into AFL reckoning M
elbourne could call upon some forgotten Demons as they bid to crash the AFL's top eight. The Demons head to Alice Springs to play Port Adelaide on Saturday off the back of a 63-point win over Brisbane.
The six-day break means coach Paul Roos will leave several tired bodies behind in Melbourne, giving hope to several Demons of old. Former co-captains Jack Trengove and Jack Grimes will be considered for their first games of the season, while flag-winner Chris Dawes is also in the frame. That they haven't been a part of Melbourne's impressive start to the year shows the transformation underway under Roos. A host of second-tier Demons stood up in their 63-point win over Brisbane on Sunday but Roos said selecting a 22 to play the Power would be difficult. "Alice (Springs) on a six-day break, as a coaching group we'd be confident of putting three or four guys in and leaving three or four out," he said. "When we're tired we don't play that well and we think we've got a list we can rotate around a bit more. "Dawesy's played his third game. Grimesy has been consistent but hasn't been able to crack in (to the AFL team). "Trengove has been playing good footy. "Jack put his hand up during week ... he's not far away." Roos said he'd locked in defender Neville Jetta to return to the side after his one-week suspension. It's the first time since 2006 they've been in positive territory after nine games, and they'll sit inside the eight - albeit temporarily - should they beat the Power. Melbourne's best player this season, Jack Viney, hailed the contribution of the lesser-known Demons against Brisbane. Alex Neal-Bullen and Ben Newton played their first game of the season against the Lions. "We're really happy with the
contribution right across the board. Guys come up from the VFL and really fit in perfectly," he told AAP. "Guys like Neal-Bullen and Newton were terrific. Jayden Hunt and Josh Wagner are another couple of examples. "We've got a really good system and guys are really knocking the door down." He said the club's 5-4 start was "absolutely exciting".
"It certainly comes across our minds how close we are to the eight. You play this sport to have success, to play finals," he said. "It's a little taster for the group but we understand there's a long way to go and we have to play some really strong football, some consistent football to even consider finals."
St Kilda make statement after shocker
S
t Kilda coach Alan Richardson's concerns after a 103-point AFL loss to West Coast were clear.
Contest and pressure. Richardson asked for an improvement in both areas and the Saints delivered on Sunday, when they kicked clear in the third quarter to defeat Essendon by 46 points. Josh Bruce, Tim Membrey and Paddy McCartin booted a combined seven goals in the third term at Etihad Stadium, six of them coming on the trot. "We saw the game as an opportunity to get our season back on track," Membrey said. "Last week against West Coast clearly wasn't the result we wanted, but this time we cracked in and just did the basics well. Contest and pressure." Richardson admitted he was unsure what impact the horrible performance in Perth, where the Saints totalled three goals against the Eagles, would have on
the side's confidence. "You have a performance like that, which has the potential to undermine a bit of belief," Richardson said. "The guys had come off ... (two) pretty strong performances. "To then have one that hits you between the eyes ... just 'wow. Where did that come from'. "You have conversations and train in quite an aggressive manner to hopefully bounce back." The Saints smashed Essendon 46-23 in clearances on Sunday, despite Matthew Leuenberger dominating the ruck contests. "That was a tick," Richardson said. "We've improved (this season). Our best footy is really competitive against good teams." Membrey, who finished with 3.3, suggested the side's midfielders deserved a lot of praise. "It was a little bit ugly at the start. We got a lot of entries and just couldn't capitalise," he said. "That was a bit frustrating, but it broke open in that third quarter, we got our run going and got on top. "The mids really cracked in the whole day. They were able to get first use a lot of the time."

Roos focus on finals, not history: Scott FOOTBALL
N
orth Melbourne made history on Saturday night but the Kangaroos are more interested in building a platform for their premiership tilt than their place in the record books. For the first time in their 92-season history, North are unbeaten after the opening nine games after they thumped Carlton by 67 points at Etihad Stadium. But Scott knows a great start won't mean much without a strong finish. "I'm rapt for our supporters, those sorts of things are great for your members and sponsors ... but the players know that there's a really good opportunity in the second half of the year," Scott said. "We're really focused on Sydney this week.
It will bring us back down to earth pretty quickly if we're not careful." The win moved the Roos two games clear at the top of the ladder but they now face a tough section of their fixture, playing four current top-eight sides in their five games before the bye. "We've built a really good platform, but we'll come up against some really good opposition and the reality is win, lose or draw we'll learn a hell of a lot out of all of those games," he said. "This is going to be a really good test for us and one that we're up for."
finishing Essendon. Todd Goldstein was instrumental in the win with 45 hitouts, 19 possessions and three goals. "I thought he was great, I think he gave our midfield really good use," Scott said. "Goldy has been challenged this year in terms of opposition ruckmen who have been having really good seasons. "Who the premiere ruckman is at the moment in the competition is open to interpretation or opinions of others, but Goldy really set himself a few years ago to assert himself on the competition and I think he's taken his game to a new level.
North impressed with the way they stuck to the task against the Blues a week after "He's got a few strings to his bow now." they took their foot off the pedal against fast-
