FACEBOOK TO REDUCE ‘TRENDING’ EDITOR INPUT
F
acebook is taking new steps to reduce the role of human judgment in its "Trending Topics" feature, which drew controversy earlier this year over claims the service was suppressing conservative views. Although it denied bias, Facebook has sought to reassure users that it's not showing favouritism when it highlights stories that are drawing comment on the social network. Facebook says topics are selected by an algorithm that considers how often users post or share articles. Editors will still vet the list, but the feature will no longer include headlines or summaries written by editors. Instead it will show a selection of user comments and an excerpt from a news article.
LOST BEATLES DEMO SELLS FOR $30,000
A
demo record of a song written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and sung by McCartney himself has sold at auction in Britain for STG18,000 ($A31,169). The record It’s For You was written especially for the late British singer Cilla Black and became a hit for her in 1964. Black’s nephew, Simon White, found the acetate record in his father’s collection, mislabelled as being sung by his famous aunt, who died in 2015. It was only later the voice on the recording was discovered to be McCartney’s. He had sent the record to Black so that she could listen to the song. “This is an important and previously considered lost piece of musical history,” the Beatles Shop said.
ON BEAT PARENTS TO DEATH IN US HOME: COPS
U
S authorities say a man beat his parents to death with his hands and an object inside the family’s New Jersey home. But a motive for the attack in West Deptford, a suburb of Philadelphia, remains unclear. County prosecutors say a relative found 58-year-old Edward Coles Jr and his 55-year-old wife, Rosemarie, on Friday morning. The relative had gone to the home because he couldn’t reach the couple by phone. The couple’s 28-year-old son, Ryan, was in the home when police arrived. He was taken to a hospital on Friday for an evaluation and was moved to jail on Saturday. Ryan Coles faces murder and weapons charges. His bail was set at $US1 million. Autopsies determined the couple died from blunt head trauma.

T
he sister of pop star Mariah Carey has been arrested on prostitution charges in upstate New York. Police tell the Daily Freeman of Kingston that 55-year-old Alison Carey was arrested in Saugerties on Friday following an investigation at a hotel. Police say she solicited money in exchange for sex from an undercover police officer. Police describe Carey as a transient, and say she advertised her services online. Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra tells the newspaper that she identified herself as the performer's sister when she was arrested.

major British highway linking London with key cross-Channel routes remains closed for a second day as safety officials remove rubble from a collapsed bridge and make sure the rest of it won’t fall down as well. The M20 highway running southeast of London has been closed since midday on Saturday, when a westbound truck struck and partly destroyed a pedestrian bridge. A motorcyclist fell off his bike and was hospitalised with broken ribs, while the trucker was treated for shock. Highways England had hoped to reopen the M20 by midday on Sunday. But spokesman Stuart Thompson says the safety checks are proving “very complex,” particularly on the part of the bridge that still looms over the highway’s eastbound lanes. Safety officials are installing motion detectors to confirm the bridge remains stable.

Has KFC's secret recipe been revealed? "Many people have made these claims over the years..."
H
as Colonel Sanders' nephew inadvertently revealed to the world the secret blend of 11 herbs and spices behind KFC's fried chicken empire? The company says the recipe published in the Chicago Tribune is not authentic. But that hasn't stopped rampant online speculation that one of the most legendary and closely guarded secrets in the history of fast food has been exposed. It all started when a reporter visited with Joe Ledington, a nephew of Kentucky
Fried Chicken founder Colonel Harland David Sanders. The reporter was working on a story for the Tribune's travel section about Corbin, Kentucky, where the colonel served his first fried chicken. At one point, Ledington pulled out a family scrapbook containing the last will and testament of Sanders' second wife, Claudia Ledington. On the back of the document is a handwritten list for a blend of 11 herbs and spices to be mixed with two cups of white flour. While Joe Ledington initially told the reporter that it was the original recipe, he later said that he didn't know for sure. KFC - which is a subsidiary of Yum Brands Inc. - calls its recipe ``one of the biggest trade secrets in the world.'' It says that the recipe the reporter saw is not the real thing. ``Many people have made these claims over the years and no one has been accurate _ this one isn't either,'' KFC said in a statement. The Louisville, Kentucky-based company says that the original recipe from 1940 handwritten by Sanders is locked up in a digital safe that's encased in two feet of concrete and monitored 24 hours a day by a video and motion detection surveillance system.

CENSUS OFFICERS OUT TO VISIT RECALCITRANTS
N
early 38,000 census officers will hit the streets over the next week as the Bureau of Statistics tries to convince people to complete the national survey. In the wake of the debacle that led to the bureau shutting down its website for two days as millions of Australians tried to fill in the form, Census head Duncan Young is urging people to finish it as soon as possible. More than 6.5 million of Australia's nine million households have now completed their census, the bureau said on Thursday. About two-thirds have done it online. "We need everyone who hasn't yet taken part to do so now, so we'll be following up with those households over the coming weeks," Mr Young said. Some 2.3 million census forms were successfully submitted on August 9 before cyber attacks led the bureau to shut down its site. The census officers, recognisable by their yellow satchels and signed ABS photo identification, will visit homes that haven't already completed the survey to offer help and answer questions.

all 15 members on Friday night deplored the fact that the North's ballistic missile activities were contributing to its development of nuclear weapon delivery systems and increasing tensions. The council expressed "serious concern" that North Korea carried out the launches after six ballistic missile firings between April and June "in flagrant disregard" of its repeated statements to halt such launches as well as nuclear tests which violate council resolutions. It urged member states to redouble efforts to implement sanctions against Pyongyang, including the latest and toughest measures imposed by the council in March. North Korean Foreign Ministry official Jon Min Dok said in an interview on Saturday that the US-led discussions at the UN over a statement denouncing its missile tests were a "terrible provocation" and that the country was developing nuclear weapons because of "outrageous nuclear intimidation" by the US.

for brutal bashing of ex T the “excruciating pain” . Later, the bride and groom from the wedding drove past the house and saw the “terrified” woman run onto the road, her clothes stretched from someone pulling them, the court heard. The victim suffered from post-traumatic amnesia and spent 33 days in hospital recovering from the brutal attack. Given her memory loss, Mr Hanna said it was hard to determine the precise details of the assault but it appeared she had suffered at least two blows to her head after the strike to her chest, as well as having been strangled and grabbed by her shoulders and arms. In his submissions, defence barrister Greg McGuire said Proud himself couldn’t explain why he’d lashed out, telling the court: “Something just snapped in him” . “Albert Proud sober is different from Albert Proud drunk,” Mr McGuire said. Proud played 29 games for the Lions before being sacked in 2011 following a litany of alcohol-fuelled incidents, he said. National domestic violence helpline: 1800 737 732 or 1800RESPECT. He sentenced him to fiveand-a-half years’ jail but set parole eligibility for October 12, 2017. It came after the court heard Proud’s victim had needed urgent surgery to relieve pressure on her brain and suffered a skull fracture most likely after falling from a blow. Crown prosecutor Joshua Hanna said Proud became violent after the couple, who had been together for about two-and-a-half months, attended a wedding and then a party on November 8, 2015. The former athlete had been affectionate earlier in the evening but his mood shifted after Ms Kadadi handed him his wet clothes as they left the party, where he’d been pushed into a pool, he said. When they got into her car he started striking the windscreen and gearstick before eventually attacking his then-partner in his Sunnybank home, it was heard. ormer Brisbane Lions player Albert Proud has been jailed over a brutal attack that took a “catastrophic” toll on his then girlfriend, but could be released in just over a year. Proud, 27, appeared in the Brisbane District Court on Monday having pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm on Richelle Kadadi, as well as a wilful damage charge. In sentencing, Judge Tony Moynihan said Proud’s November 2015 attack was “very serious offending” and had taken a “catastrophic” emotional and physical toll on the woman. “This ordeal has had a pro-

ITV shut down broadcasts on several of its channels on Saturday morning as part of its effort to entice UK citizens to sports clubs, which are being opened for free this weekend as part of a national event called “I Am Team GB.” Furman - who has set 621 records since 1986, with 206 of them still unbroken - set the latest record late on Saturday in New York on a cake commemorating his meditation teacher, the spiritual leader and athlete Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007), who would have been 85 this year. The birthday cake measured 13.5 by 3 metres. In order to achieve the record, all 72,000 candles had to burn simultaneously for two minutes. To light them, 70 of Furman’s friends helped with gas flares. As a reward, they all got a slice of cake.

Lightning kills 300 BRANSON THOUGHT HE WAS A reindeer in Norway GONNER IN CRASH E

ore than 300 wild reindeer were found dead after lightning struck a central mountain plateau in southern Norway, authorities say. A thunderstorm hit the Hardangervidda mountain plateau on Friday in the Telemark region, where game wardens had so far counted 322 dead reindeer, Knut Nylend, spokesman for the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate, told Norwegian broadcaster NRK
on Sunday. Nylen attributed the “unusually high” death toll to the lightning strike and the fact that reindeer often stand close to each other. The Hardangervidda plateau, a large portion of which forms a national park, is a popular destination for outdoor activities and is home to an estimated 10,000 wild reindeer, according to the Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre.
ntrepreneur Sir Richard Branson said he thought he was going to die after crashing his bicycle. The Virgin founder badly damaged his cheek and suffered severe cuts to his knee, chin, shoulder and body. The accident occurred on Virgin Gorda, one of the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. Sir Richard said: “I was heading down a hill towards Leverick Bay when it suddenly got really dark and I managed to hit a sleeping policeman hump (traffic dome) in the road head on. “The next thing I knew, I was being hurled over the handlebars and my life was literally flashing before my eyes. “I really thought I was going to die. I went flying head-first towards the concrete road, but fortunately my shoulder and cheek took the brunt of the impact, and I was wearing a helmet that saved my life. “My bike went flying off the cliff and disappeared. We’ve since recovered the crumpled bicycle, completely destroyed. My cheek has been badly damaged and my knee, chin, shoulder and body severely cut.”

Hanson seizes on hostel tragedy P
auline Hanson claims the brutal death of a British backpacker “could well be the first Islamic terrorist attack in Queensland and I want some answers”. Police allege Smail Ayad cried out ‘Allahu Akbar’ during the attack that left 21-year-old Mia Ayliffe-Chung dead and another British man, Tom Kelly, 30, fighting for life. ASIO, Australian Federal Police and Queensland investigators and trying to find out if the Frenchman had any links to extreme ideologies. They are also considering the possibility Ayad was obsessed with Ms Ayliffe-Chung. John Norris, who has run Shelley’s Backpackers in Home Hill for 15 years, says Ayad showed no signs of being an extremist but had become infatuated with the 21-yearold and followed her around in the days before the attack. “It just wasn’t him ...A lot of the news is trying to put him as an Islamic extremist. As far as I’m concerned he was never like that,” he told Channel Nine
on Thursday. But Senator Hanson believes police are trying to downplay any possible terrorism links and has used the attack to repeat her controversial call for a moratorium on allowing Muslims to immigrate to Australia. “I’m not going to be silenced on yet another attack involving Islamic extremism - especially one occurring in the state I am representing in the Senate,” she said. “Australians know what the problem is. It’s time this government wakes up and starts looking after Australians’ welfare before those from other countries.” Ms Ayliffe-Chung’s Facebook page has been inundated with anti-Islamic comments. Her mother has appealed for people not to misrepresent the tragedy. “As a peaceful person, Mia had a huge respect for everybody,” Rosie Ayliffe said in a statement. “She would not want to be the reason for any hostilities caused by any misrepresentation of events.” Australian Muslims have previously condemned terror-related events in the country, although authorities say it’s far from clear if this attack can be classified as such.

A US navy aircraft crew spotted the pair on the beach and gave their location to the Coast Guard in Guam. Hawaii News Now says the two, who had no emergency equipment, were picked up and taken to a patrol boat. The Coast Guard received a re-

Hawaii News Now says the two departed Weno Island on August 17, and they were expected to arrive at their destination to Tamatam Island the next day. In an effort to keep the sapphire and diamond-studded crown on British soil, the government is looking for a buyer in Britain to match the price of 6 million pounds ($A10.3 million) . “I hope that we are able to keep the coronet in the UK and on display for the public to enjoy for years to come,” Culture Minister Matt Hancock said in comments carried by the Press Association. Designed by Victoria’s husband Prince Albert in 1840, the crown is widely seen as one of the most
significant objects previously owned by the British monarch. After Victoria’s death, the ornament was passed on to Princess Mary by King George V and Queen Mary, before later being bought by a dealer in London, who had been set to pass it on to a foreign buyer. Britain’s Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects now has until December 27 to find an alternative buyer, and can extend the deadline for the export of the coronet until June 27 if a person living in Britain shows serious intentions of matching the asking price.

Sports venues move on security concerns T
"....a bid to ease public safety fears, including terrorism"
ransparent stadium bags are being introduced into sporting venues around Australia in a bid to ease public safety fears, including terrorism concerns. The shift is in line with moves adopted by the key American sports. If those policies are adopted by sporting bodies here such as the NRL and AFL, it could means fans will only be permitted to bring smaller see-through bags to their favourite sporting games. The NFL significantly beefed up its stadium bag policy in response to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. The SCG Trust has started selling the bags in its stadium store and Sydney Olympic Park venues could follow. The bags, which retail for around $10, reach a maximum size of 30cm x 38cm and can carry the fan essentials such as an extra layer of clothing,
a water bottle, a mobile phone and sunglasses. David Freeman of Brands In Motion have has been involved in introducing the bags to venues across Australia. “The idea of the design is to limit how much people can bring in a game,” Freeman told AAP. “At the same time transparent bags cover those security concerns and make it difficult for people to smuggle alcohol or weapons into the game. “Fans can take the essentials into the game, nothing more, northing less. “Transparent bags are the norm in the US and it could become the norm in sports venues across the country here. The transparent bags could also have prevented the situation at Belmore Sports Ground earlier this year when a fan smuggled in a liquor bottle and hurled it at Canberra players just beyond the fence of the suburban ground.
WARM BRITISH CASTLES WELCOME INVASIONS
E
nglish Heritage is on track to welcome a record-breaking 1.9 million visitors to its castles, palaces and forts this summer due to what it believes has been the “perfect temperature”. The average maximum temperature in England for July and the first half of August was 21 degrees Celsius, according to the UK’s Met Office. This was described by English Heritage as ideal for visiting historic locations, because it is not too hot to entice people to the beach or too cold to make them stay at home. Some 870,000 people visited the charity’s staffed sites such as Stonehenge and Dover Castle last month, making it the busiest July since 2000. Visitor numbers for August are expected to exceed the previous
highest figure of 1.07 million for that month in 2013, leading to this year’s summer holiday period being a record breaker. English Heritage’s head of events, Emily Sewell, said: “Over July and August we’ve seen more and more people enjoying our Roman forts, medieval palaces and historic houses. “It appears 21 degrees Celsius is the perfect temperature for families to explore castles. Spiral staircases can be a struggle during a heatwave and when it’s pouring rain a roofless castle can test anyone, but this summer’s fine weather is just right. “The August bank holiday weekend will be crucial but we’re confident that with everything from jousting to Victorian cooking at our sites, we’ll have a record-breaking summer holiday.”

VIC taxi drivers consider legal action
T
he Victorian government faces a possible lawsuit over its plans to legalise ride sharing and dump taxi licence fees. The Victorian Taxi and Hire Car Families group is meeting with lawyers this week as they contemplate legal action against the government. The group, representing more than 500 concerned taxi owners, is also meeting with the government on Thursday. They want the government to increase the compensation offer included in a proposed transition package worth $450 million that was announced last week. The government wants to create a single registration system for cabs, hire cars and
ride-sharing services. Taxi licences will be scrapped, with owners to be compensated, but at a fraction of what licences were once valued. Back in 2010-11, licences were selling for above $500,000. Under its taxi licence buy-back scheme, the government will pay $100,000 for a single licence and $50,000 for a second licence. At a meeting on Sunday, the Victorian Taxi and Hire Car Families said they are revisiting their legal options. "We're working on legal options circumstances have certainly changed," Nina Massara told the meeting. "This government has been incredibly

n a recent visit to Kangaroo Island, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) and Mitsubishi Motors Australia (MMAL) officially extended their support to Kangaroo Island Council to help raise awareness about the benefits of electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) use on the Island. MMC Chairman of the Board and President, CEO Mr Osamu Masuko said, “At MMC, we applaud the Kangaroo Island Council’s steps to establish a sustainable future for residents and visitors by paving the way for greater use of electric and plugin hybrid electric vehicles. Reducing emissions helps you preserve all that is exceptional about your Island. “MMC has committed to provide some infrastructure support for the Island and is proud to be associated with the initiative. “Our visit was to get a first-hand experience of Kangaroo Island, to understand how the initiative will roll-out on the ground and to meet our partners. We know you are the fourth most popular tourist destination in Australia with over 200 thousand local and international visitors per year, which will grow with the airport,” said Mr Osamu Masuko during this visit. Earlier in the week Mr Masuko met with the Premier, Jay Weatherill, and reiterated MMC’s support for the State Government’s initiatives to move toward a low carbon economy and greener future. Ms Wendy Campana, Commissioner for Kangaroo Island also met with Mr Masuko and his team and said, “This type of approach is a great outcome from our

Government’s commitments to address the challenges and opportunities that the Island faces. I look forward to continuing to work with Kangaroo Island Council, the Community, State Government and partners such as Mitsubishi Motors, to grow the economy, and meet the needs of Community and visitors alike in an environmentally sensitive and effective manner. “The State and Federal Government’s investment in the Kangaroo Island Airport Upgrade is proving to be a key enabler for the Island economy, creating investor confidence, and driving visitation and growth. The provision of expanded services to these growing visitor numbers is vital and to be able to do this whilst extending protection to the very environment that is the island’s drawcard is both innovative and exceptional, and clearly demonstrates the Council’s commitment to facilitating sustainable development.” Kangaroo Island Council Mayor Peter Clements said that much of the value and attraction of ‘brand KI’ is wrapped up in its ‘green’ status – beautiful beaches, pristine environment, clean air, blue skies, abundant wildlife: “Think how much more
we reinforce that message if we have a core fleet of EV and PHEV hire cars powered by renewable energy. We already have the largest regional EV charging network in Australia, all of it powered by renewable energy.” This vision, which is shared by Council and Mitsubishi Motors also supports the State Government’s efforts to encourage the uptake of EVs and PHEVs as one of a range of initiatives to achieve zero emissions by 2050. Mitsubishi Motors is a world leader in this technology, having developed EVs for 50 years, in addition to a growing range of PHEVs. By 2019-20 Mitsubishi Motors is expecting to release an affordable, all-electric mini SUV with zero emissions, with an expected range of in excess of 400km on a single charge. According to Kangaroo Island Council CEO Andrew Boardman, “this would be ideally suited to our Island given its size, spread of attractions and mix of road surfaces.” “We certainly need to plan for the increase in visitor numbers following the development of the airport. An EV and PHEV fleet of small SUVs will help minimise visitor impact on our road network, and on our
environment through decreased emissions and noise. Being allwheel drive SUVs, they will also provide self-drive tourists with a safer and more robust way of managing all types of road surface,” Mr Boardman said. The Council is keen to work with local businesses who may be interested in becoming involved in the EV network – whether as potential PHEV/EV car users or EV Friendly businesses and has recently started to engage with accommodation providers across the Island to build an understanding for the options there are for participation at little / no cost in most cases. “This project creates opportunities for local businesses and promotes an environmentally responsible approach to tourism. It also presents an excellent opportunity for Mitsubishi Motors to be promoting a fleet of PHEVs and future EVs, designed for use in regional destinations with some tough road challenges.” The Council currently has two plug-in hybrid electric Mitsubishi Outlanders operating in its fleet, and has been very impressed with the model’s reliability and suitability.
ellington Domino's Pizza says it will trial the use of drones to deliver pizzas in New Zealand in an apparent world first. The company posted pictures of the deliverydrone on Facebook and said it aimed to begin aerial pizza deliveries to its New Zealand customers later this year. The carbon-fibre drone has been developed in partnership with US delivery-drone company Flirtey, and is designed to lower its cheesy cargo to pizza lovers via a tether. Domino's said the drones, which use military grade autopilot technology and encrypted communications, would zoom along at 30 kilometres per hour, flying at an altitude of approximately 60 metres. The drones will initially only be used in calm weather, with the company opting to revert to traditional delivery methods during periods of high wind and rain. The initiative was welcomed by Transport Minister Simon Bridges, who said Domino's had chosen New Zealand for the trial because of the country's forward-thinking aviation rules. "I have been actively promoting New Zealand as a test bed for new transport technology trials," Bridges said. Bridges says the government is also working with Domino's to develop a driverless land-based pizza delivery unit.

The ongoing Connecticutbased study was based on surveys in two middle schools and three high schools in the autumn of 2013 and spring of 2014. About 340 of the 2100 students surveyed had used e-cigarettes. Youngsters who tried vaping to quit smoking were more likely to keep
“Savings can add up to thousands of dollars a year for the average smoker” Pediatrics found that some of the reasons prompting teenagers to try the battery-operated devices, which heat liquids typically laced with nicotine to deliver vapor, help to predict ongoing use. The most likely draws are the cost, which is much lower than for combustible cigarettes, and ability to vape in places where smoking may be banned, according to the study led by Yale School of Medicine professors. Costs can vary widely, depending on the brand and state cigarette taxes, but savings can add up to thousands of dollars a year for the average smoker, according to various vaping industry estimates.
using e-cigarettes months later, the study found. Only about 6 per cent of those surveyed tried e-cigarettes for that purpose, but about 80 per cent of this group stuck with the devices. More than half the youngsters said they tried the devices because they were curious, 41.8 per cent cited “good flavours” and almost a third because their friends used them. About a quarter said vaping was healthier than traditional cigarettes. “The younger the kids were when they started, the more likely they were to keep using them,” said Krysten W. Bold, a postdoctoral fellow at the Yale School of Medicine and one of the authors of the report.

Scientists find Earth-like planet
S
cientists have discovered a planet that appears to be similar to Earth circling the star closest to the sun, potentially a major step in the quest to find out if life exists elsewhere in the universe, new research shows. The relative proximity of the planet, known as Proxima b, gives scientists a better chance to eventually capture an image of it, to help them establish whether it has an atmosphere and water, which is believed to be necessary for life. Future studies may reveal if any atmosphere contains tell-tale chemicals of biological life, such as methane, according to a paper published in this week's issue of the journal Nature. "The key question of our initiative was whether there were potentially lifebearing planets orbiting these stars. We know now there is at least one planet with some characteristics similar to the Earth," said Pete Worden, a former top NASA manager. The planet, located about 4.2 light-
years or 40 trillion km from Earth, is the closest of some 3,500 planets that have been discovered beyond the solar system since 1995, according to the paper. "This planetary system is much closer than any other that we know so detailed investigation is easier," said astronomer Ansgar Reiners, with the University of Gottingen in Germany. Astronomers got their first hint of a planet circling the sun's small dim neighbour star in 2013. But they needed additional observations, using more precise instruments, to make a definitive call. An international team of 31 scientists found the planet after careful and repeated measurements of slight shifts in the colour of the light coming from its host star, Proxima Centauri, which is a small, dim star in the Alpha Centauri system. The shifts, which astronomers call "wobbles," are caused by the gravitational tugging of a planet roughly
1.3 times the size of Earth on the parent star. Based on the timing of wobbles, scientists determined that the planet circles its host star in just 11 days, compared to Earth's 365-day orbit around the sun. That puts the planet far closer to its parent star than Earth orbits the sun. However, Proxima Centauri is so much smaller and dimmer than the sun that its planet's orbit is suitably positioned for liquid water despite being just 4.4 million miles away. "Chances are good that it's a viable, Earth-like planet today," said astronomer Pedro Amado, with the Instituto de Astrofisica de Andalucia in Granada, Spain. But scientists are unsure if red dwarf stars like Proxima Centauri are good hosts for life. Planets orbiting close enough to keep water liquid would be blasted with 100 times more highenergy radiation than Earth receives from the sun, though what impact that would have on life is a matter of scientific debate. "We don't think it's a show-stopper," Amado said.
This artist rendering provided by the European Southern Observatory shows a view of the surface of the planet Proxima b orbiting the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Solar System. The double star Alpha Centauri AB also appears in the image to the upper-right of Proxima itself. Proxima b is a little more massive than the Earth and orbits in the habitable zone around Proxima Centauri, where the temperature is suitable for liquid water to exist on its surface.
CATCHING POKEMON LITTERERS P layers of Nintendo's augmented reality game Pokemon Go are being warned to take their rubbish with them or face hefty fines. Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D'Ambrosio has urged the public to report people caught littering as part of Keep Australia Beautiful Week. Hundreds of Pokemon Go players were chased off
a Victorian golf course by security for causing wear and tear, vandalism and damage to bunkers on Saturday. Fines for littering range from $311 for pieces of rubbish to a whopping $622 if caught throwing a lit cigarette from a vehicle. More than 15,000 people were caught littering and issued with infringement notices during the last financial year.

Theron, McConaughey talk about parenting C
harlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey take on parental roles in their new film, “Kubo and the Two Strings”. Off camera, the two Oscar winners have discussed their real-life approach to raising kids. Both are teaching their children about compassion and responsibility, and McConaughey takes a Hollywood approach when talking to his kids about moral choices. “We like the word residuals in our house,” he said in a recent interview. “Which choices are going to pay you back later or are going to give you more green lights later on of being the young man or young woman that you want to be?” “Kubo and the Two Strings,” the latest film from stopmotion animation studio Laika (“Coraline,” “The Boxtrolls”), centres on a boy who ignites a long-dormant vendetta when he accidentally summons a spirit from his past. Theron and McConaughey play his trusted guides, Monkey and Beetle. The film opens in
Australia on Friday. A father of three, McConaughey said he’s still navigating the balance between parent and friend, roles he finds “intersect and overlap”. “Because a child sure needs a parent, and I’ve seen many, many examples where the adult was only trying to be the friend to the child, and he was doing a disservice to the child,” he said. “But those are two parts. And I know I’m constantly engaging when to play.” Theron, who has two children, said she’s willing to transform into whatever her son and daughter need, just as her character transforms in the film. “If you feel like you have to become something or someone for your child in order to kind of get something through to them, then you do that,” she said. “I think it’s just limitless when you’re a parent. There’s nothing that you wouldn’t do.” That includes playing silly roles around the house to entertain her 4-year-old son,

KILLING HEIDI BACK FOR QUEENSCLIFF MUSIC FESTIVAL
E
lla & Jesse Hooper are thrilled to announce the digital release of the iconic naughties album 'Reflector' by Killing Heidi. Reflector will be available on iTunes and streaming services very soon! To celebrate 20 years since the band formed, Killing Heidi will be performing exclusive sets of their biggest hits for the first time in 10 years, including headlining the opening night of the 20th Queenscliff Music Festival in November. “It's a celebration not a reformation” says Jesse “We thought this was a really special opportunity to reflect on that era, as it's Queenscliff's 20th anniversary - and we started Killing Heidi 20 years ago too!” It’s been twenty years since triple j unearthed the Hooper siblings as Killing Heidi with their folk pop song, Kettle. The Australian public embraced the
duo who soon became a band, releasing debut album Reflector in March 2000. Singles ‘Mascara’ and ‘Weir’ made Reflector a blow-out success and the album makes up an integral part of Aussie indie music story – one that hasn't been told digitally until now. Reflector took out four ARIA awards and reached 4 x platinum status, the album spawned 4 hit singles including the number one single ‘Mascara’ and teen anthem ‘Weir’. Weir placed #2 and Mascara #14 in triple j’s Hottest 100 in 1999. The Hooper siblings won the critically-acclaimed APRA song-writers of the year award for the album. The album launched the band into international markets, and the Hooper siblings followed up with another two top twenty albums and four top-twenty hit singles. For old and new Killing Heidi
fans alike this digital re-release has been a long time coming. “Fans have been asking for years for Reflector online, It's amazing that generations of people still feel connected to this music, they want to blast it… And now they can! It's great, it feels like coming full circle.” - Ella Hooper “I’m really excited to revisit the Killing Heidi days, they were a big part of my youth and I can’t wait to perform these songs live for people who loved them too. We’ll play all our biggest hits from our first singles Weir and Mascara through to our later releases 'I Am' and 'Calm Down' We also have some other exciting things on the horizon so stay tuned for more announcements”. - Jesse
Hooper Killing Heidi perform at this years Queenscliff Music Festival ahead of a stellar lineup including Ash Grunwald, George, Doug Anthony Allstars, Pierce Brothers, Paul Kelly & Charlie Owen just to name a few. For full festival details and early bird tickets visit www.qmf.net.au

CANCER You might not be so passionate or fiery when it comes to romance but you intensely enjoy experimenting. You shock yourself with a daring move. If you feel that the flame has dimmed out on you, bring back the blaze by planning some sexy dates. Don’t hold back. LEO A tension between you and your loved one could happen this week but don’t turn it into a battle. Let things cool off for a while and revisit them once both parties are ready to sit down and have a mature conversation. Seal if off by planning an expansive new adventure together, a foreign vacation would be a nice idea.
SAGITTARIUS Take the initiative in love. It’s useless to just sit and wait for the perfect moment. Make the moment perfect by starting simple like opening with a small talk then gradually increase as you and the other person become more comfortable with each other. It’s important to stay practical this week. CAPRICORN The fact that your plan doesn’t immediately work out isn’t a reason to get disappointed. There are things about yourself and the project that you’re working on which your eyes are not capable of seeing. Ask for the advice of someone you trust. AQUARIUS There’s nothing wrong with being serious but sometimes you are a bit too serious. Take things as they come, Aquarius. Taking life too seriously leads to being stressed. Stop and laugh now and then. You’ll see that everything becomes easier. PISCES You will be a magnet if you feel good and look good. Having just the right amount of confidence along with a dash of charisma make you very attractive and everything seems to go by itself. Avoid unnecessary conflicts that could disrupt this good vibe.

GEMINI Become a person of action, Gemini. Do what your heart tells you to do and don’t procrastinate by overthinking. Take small steps forward until it becomes a habit. If you’re single, you can find someone only sexually attractive. It is already sufficient for you for now.
SCORPIO Single? Expect small coincidences to cross your love life this week and see what happens. You are more disciplined than before but you still flirt around. There’s nothing wrong with that as long as you know how to take care of yourself.

TAURUS Don’t rush to conclusions based on hazy facts, Taurus. Realize that your words could have the same effect as a bomb. Watch out for the tendency to be critical of your partner. You take pride in your uniqueness and attention to detail but that does not mean that he/she has to go the same route as yours.
LIBRA This week is all about letting go. If someone did you wrong and accepted to his/her mistake, go ahead and grant your forgiveness. It should not be your option to get stuck in the past because at the end of the day, you will be at the losing end.

ARIES Just let everything come your way and don’t let your spinning mind take so much control. Overthinking will only make little problems scarier and heavier. Accept the fact that you cannot control everything. Making mistakes is a part of living life. Everyone makes mistakes.
VIRGO You are happy with how your career is doing but you are missing some direction in love. Singles can expect an important encounter this week. You could land in a romantic bond with a coworker or someone who wields more power than you in the company. Partners will pay extra attention to the harmony in a relationship.

When I arrived at the RSPCA I was very lame as my feet had not been cared for properly for some time. My feet are better now, but due to the previous damage to my hooves I need to have shoes on both of my front feet while they are still continuing to grow out nicely. As I am only young and quite a big girl I do need to go to a very experienced home. I just need someone with time to let my feet get completely better, and patience and knowledge to help me grow into the amazing young horse. RSPCA NO. 832710

VIC TO STOP NSW GREYHOUNDS BORDER CROSSING
V
ictoria and its greyhound industry are trying to stop a flood of trainers and dogs entering the state after a bill to shut the industry passed NSW parliament. Racing Minister Martin Pakula reiterated Victo-
ria's dog racing industry would not be shut down "on the back of a NSW report" and the local industry is undergoing cultural change. He says breeding numbers are down roughly 30 per cent and the inspectorate has increased
three-fold. "We have made enormous strides in Victoria in terms of implementing the recommendations of our reports," he told SEN on Wednesday. "It's got to continue - no one is suggesting they are out of the woods - but we are
not going to shut down an industry based on the back of a NSW report." Greyhound Racing Victoria is consulting with the government on how it can place controls on NSW trainers trying to cross the border, he said. "We can't have a sort of an inundation. So there
will have to be some controls exercised as to those that want to come here and GRV are working on that," Mr Pakula said. A GRV spokesman confirmed talks were happening, discussing the possible impacts the NSW ban would have on the Victorian industry.
THIEVES FLEECE VICTORIAN ANIMAL PARK'S LAMB
A beautiful baby lamb who has been stolen from a Moorooduc animal park on Sunday morning. Ralph, who was recently named following a competition run by the park, is only four weeks old and must be fed by a bottle to survive.
PETS “Angel”
A
Victorian animal park has been fleeced of a fourweek-old lamb named Ralph. In a baa-baric burglary, thieves broke into a Big Goose animal park shed on Mornington Tyabb Road in Moorooduc between 1am and 3am on Sunday. Police believe it was a targeted attack because
the thieves rounded up Ralph and nothing else. The four-week-old lamb needs to be fed by a bottle to survive and has distinctive black markings on his face and ears and a round black spot on his right hoof. Police are hoping the person responsible may be left feeling a little sheepish and will return baby Ralph to the park.

Vision Mercedes:
Maybach 6
E
very August classic car fans from around the world converge on Pebble Beach in California for a very special beauty contest. This gathering of magnificent classic cars is the perfect place to premiere the exclusive Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, a sensational luxury-class coupé. The 2+2-seater is a homage to the glorious age of the aero coupés and consciously carries this tradition forward into the future. The coupé reinterprets classic, emotional design principles in an extreme way, following the Mercedes design philosophy of sensual purity. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, which measures almost six metres in length, is designed as an electric car. The drive system has an output of 550 kW (750 hp). The shallow underfloor battery allows a range of over 500 kilometres according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA). The large coupé is made its debut at Monterey Car Week, which took place on the Monterey Peninsula between 16 and 21 August 2016. The final event on 21 August will be the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elégance. With its sensual, emotional design (“hot”) and intelligent details (“cool”), the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 represents the ultimate in luxury. The classic aesthetic proportions of the show car – the extremely long bonnet, the low roof line and the rearward positioning of the greenhouse – recall the aero coupés of days gone by. But this is not retro design – this is a reinterpretation of classic, aesthetic principles. At the same time the design is something unexpectedly new – cool, technoid and reduced. This is exemplified by the aerodynamically intelligent basic shape. Even without aids such as spoilers, the airflow hugs the contours of the vehicle body and only breaks away very late at the tail end of the vehicle. Then there is the surprisingly technoid character of the
narrow lights, the partially transparent rims and the split rear window. “Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool”, states Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency”. The side sills, illuminated by LED light strips, clearly underline the fact that the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is designed as an electric car. Thanks to its four compact permanent magnet synchronous electric motors, it features all-wheel drive. The output of the drive system is 550 kW (750 hp). The shallow underfloor battery has a usable capacity of approx. 80 kWh. This not only allows performance characteristics typical of a sports car (acceleration from 0-100 km/h in under four seconds, top speed electronically governed at 250 km/h) but also a range of over 500 kilometres according to the NEDC (over 200 miles according to EPA). The quick-charge function is also visionary: as a result of DC charging based on the CCS standard, the system allows an impressive charging capacity of up to 350 kW. In just 5 minutes enough power can be charged to achieve an additional range of around 100 kilometres.
“The drive system has an output of 550 kW (750 hp). The shallow underfloor battery allows a range of over 500 kilometres” LMCT 11281

FISHINGREPORT I t’s getting close to that time of the year, where the whiting come on the bite, the snapper swarm the reefs and there is fun to be had. As the days roll over, it will be November before we know it and the time will have arrived. So get prepared, search for some new spots and make sure your tackle is in good nick and ready to go. Good areas to snoop around when the snapper arrive are places like the corals, silver leaves and Rhyll and even just out from Hastings provide thousands of fish. Snapper graze along reefy, rocky ground similar to how cows graze a large paddock. Considering this and the fact they are a school fish and hang out in large numbers. If you find the school, you are in for some fun (especially early to mid season). Therefore, don’t be afraid to drive slowly around areas until you see some arches on your fish finder. If the fish aren’t under your boat you will struggle to catch them. This is similar to whiting fishing. Although, you want to fish areas such as the Middle Spit, Tortoise Head bank, Balnarring and Somers. Depending on where the fish congregate this season.

shark and then later on he caught big gummy shark. This is one of many captures this winter season has produced offshore and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Over on the beaches, gummies are everywhere. Somers, Balnarring and Stockyard Point are all producing the goods. Justin Blythe managed to land a 12 kg ripper of a gummy shark a couple days ago and has yet again proved how successful land based fishing can be. All you have to do is put in the time and the fresh bait. So, if you are looking to wet a line, targeting either gummy sharks or squid in Westernport will provide you with some entertainment or in estuaries bream and estuary perch can be a lot of fun on lures, soft plastics or bait. Good luck in the cold winter conditions and get ready for when summer hits as the bay will come alive. Breaking News Glenn and Stuie on Sunday 28th August managed to land a 125.7 kg Southern Bluefin Tuna in 40 meters of water out front of Western Port. More about this fish and capture to follow next report. Todd

SPORT CRICKET GOES NO.1 IN AUSSIE PARTICIPATION
C
ricket has overtaken Australian Rules football to become the country's most popular sport in terms of participation. Findings from the National Cricket Census, released by Cricket Australia (CA) on Tuesday, show the sport enjoyed an 8.5 per cent growth to 1.31 million participants in the 2015-16 summer. In comparison, based on findings from the same research company, the AFL
claimed to have 1.25 million participants in 2015 in their most recent annual report. "Cricket is clearly the sport of choice for many Australians and we're proud to be billed as one of the biggest participation sports in the country," CA chief executive James Sutherland said. "As another exciting summer approaches, we continue to be focused on growing our sport and inspiring
Australians from all walks of life to pick up a bat and ball and play cricket." Almost a quarter of all cricket participants are now female, with the sport enjoying a nine per cent growth in that demographic to almost 315,000 players and officials, which make up 24 per cent of the sport. The data also shows a 28 per cent growth in multicultural players and a 40 per cent rise in indigenous numbers. More than half of cricket's participants are counted through school programs of at least four formal sessions, which is similar to the AFL. Cricket Australia has also assumed more than 180,000 indoor cricket participants since they partnered with the sport in 2009.
Maia, VanZant score wins at UFC Vancouver D
emian Maia backed up his calls for a welterweight title shot with an early submission victory over Carlos Condit in the main event of UFC Fight Night at Rogers Arena on Saturday night. Ranked third in the division, Maia said this week that with a victory over Condit, he should be in line for a fight for the title now held by Tyron Woodley. And, at 38 years of age, Maia may get his wish later in the year after forcing Condit to tap out at 3:08 of the opening round. Maia made quick work of the fight, submitting Condit with a rear-naked choke at 1:52 in the first round. He then broke down in
tears in the middle of the octagon when it was over. "I'm very grateful for everything I've accomplished in my life and very grateful for my family," said Maia, who has won six straight fights. "My life is complete already. The title shot, that will be something else, something amazing if it happens." Saturday's fight may have been the last for Condit. There has been speculation about Condit's future in the UFC, and he strongly suggested following his loss to Maia that his days as a fighter could be over. The Vancouver card also saw the return to the octagon of Paige VanZant. VanZant showed even better footwork than
she did on Dancing With the Stars, the American landing a brutal roundhouse head kick to drop Australia's Bec Rawlings in the second round before landing several punches to win by TKO. Anthony Pettis also submitted Charles Oliveira in the third round in their featherweight bout. Pettis, who flirted with a knockout win in the first round, was able to roll Oliveira into a guillotine choke, forcing his opponent to end the fight at 3:11 of the third round.

MCENROE AND KYRGIOS COULD TEAM UP T
ennis superbrats John McEnroe and Nick Kyrgios are set to team up to try to conquer grand slam giants Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the inaugural Laver Cup. McEnroe has been named Rest of the World captain at the event's launch in New York with old foe Bjorn Borg to skipper Europe in tennis's version of golf's Ryder Cup. The teams' event will make its debut in September 2017 in Prague. "It's going to be absolutely unbelievable," Federer said after he and Nadal committed to lead Europe. "To be on the same side of the net as Rafa finally is a great feeling and not facing the big forehand. "I can actually support it and say: `Hit one more' and take joy out of it. I can't wait to play doubles with Rafa at the Laver Cup. "It's going to be a very special and
unique experience." Each team will have six players. Four will earn their way onto the team through ATP points standings. The other two will be captain's picks. The Laver Cup will be played annually except for Olympic years over the course of three days - Friday through Sunday with the first edition at the O2 Arena in
Prague on an indoor hard court from September 22-24 next year. There will be four matches each day - three in singles, one in doubles - and each player must play at least one singles rubber. Europe shape as a superpower with a potential line-up of Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Federer, Nadal, Stan Wawrinka and Tomas Berdych. McEnroe, though, says it's too early to write off the Rest of the World, who, on current rankings, would have world No.6 Milos Raonic as their spearhead along with Kei Nishikori, Kyrgios and fellow Australian Bernard Tomic plus two captain's picks. "A lot of things can change in one year," McEnroe said. "You don't know what's going to happen a year from now. Guys like Milos, for example - he sees these all-time greats and trying to bridge that gap, trying to figure out a way that he can get closer. "Juan Martin (del Potro), I was just so happy to see him back on the court. He's had such a rough time but he'd be an incredible positive with the way he's played at the Olympics. "And there is some young guys, there's going to be a couple of guys going to make a breakthrough in the next year or two, no question about it. "That's why I think this is going to be a lot more competitive than it may appear at the moment." Rod Laver, the only player to complete two calendaryear grand slams, said he was humbled to have the event named in his honour. "It's amazing," said Australia's greatest ever player. "Hopefully it's going to be a world competition that's going to last and be a real competition for the world of tennis."

elbourne captain Cameron Smith wants greater consistency from NRL referees and the league's match review committee. Storm face Cronulla on Saturday night in an AAMI Park blockbuster, with the winners crowned minor premiers. Smith called on his side to lift after an upset loss to Brisbane but also had sage words of advice for whistle-blowers on Monday. The 33-year-old, who uncharacteristically lost his cool last Friday night after Broncos playmaker Anthony Milford was awarded a contentious penalty, declared officials have "an obligation to referee the game properly". "(There were) some things in our game the other night which I think most people would say was playing against the spirit of the game," Smith said. "The players will get away with it if the referees keep giving them opportunities to do so. "The one thing that players, coaches and fans always ask for is consistency." Smith is renowned for the calm demeanour in which he deals with referees - be it a club game, State of Origin clash or international fixture. But the national skipper failed
to hide his fury after Milford threw the ball at Felise Kaufusi, who was lying on the ground, and successfully appealed for a penalty last Friday night. "Very rarely do I sort of let my emotions get out of check like that, but I felt quite strongly the way the referee ruled on that," Smith said. Smith was also unhappy about the fact Storm forward Nelson Asofa-Solomona had been offered a one-game ban for making dangerous contact to the neck of Brisbane's Jarrod Wallace. Storm are unlikely to take the case to the judiciary as AsofaSolomona would be risking a two-match suspension and the prospect of missing week one of the finals. Melbourne have dropped two of their past three games, having lost 22-8 to Canberra in round 23 and fallen 26-16 to the Broncos in round 25. "We are still sitting on top of the ladder so I see us as a quality football side," Smith said. "When we are playing our best footy I'll back ourselves against any opposition. "It would be wonderful to win the minor premiership, it's a fair achievement to finish on top after such a long season but it's not going to be our sole focus."

Cahill revived by first City fortnight S
occeroos striker Tim Cahill has been "rejuvenated" by his first fortnight with Melbourne City as he prepares to switch his efforts towards the national team. Australia begins the next phase of World Cup qualifying in Perth on Thursday against Iraq, before travelling to the United Arab Emirates for an away qualifier five days later. The prolific striker has been all action since arriving in Melbourne two weeks ago. Cahill began training within hours of landing from New York, and made a debut in the FFA
Cup last Wednesday night. He'll be the first Socceroo in camp for two crucial World Cup qualifiers in the next two weeks when he lands in Perth on Sunday. Temperatures above 40 degrees await the Socceroos in Abu Dhabi, before City take Cahill to a training camp in Townsville shortly after. The grind might challenge plenty of players but the indefatigable Cahill, known for combining off-field pursuits with a relentless on-field approach, insists it's all in a day's work. "It's been pretty hectic," he
told reporters in Melbourne on Saturday. "Getting off the plane form New York straight away to training then going to Brisbane and back and now Perth ... (then) the UAE and then Townsville to meet the boys. "It's all been managed well ... the professionalism of the club is exceptional, not that I've been surprised. The 36-year-old said he's not felt burdened by his high-profile return. "I feel rejuvenated," he said. "Obviously as a player coming back home there's a lot of
pressure but you have to test yourself." City unveiled their away strip on Saturday in a departure from the club's tradition. The red and white striped home kit of Melbourne Heart became City's away strip until now, but this season the club will play in a blended two-panelled shirt. The club is expected to ditch its interim majority-white home kit next year and play in 'City Blue' of their parent club Manchester City.

Magpies will be back with bang: Buckley C
NO DOCKERS FOLLOWING PAVLICH OUT THE DOOR F
remantle have finished a horror 2016 season on a high with a memorable farewell of Matthew Pavlich, but coach Ross Lyon stopped short of announcing any further departures from the AFL club. Lyon famously announced the retirements publicly of Michael Gardiner, Steven Baker, Robert Eddy and Andrew McQualter from St Kilda at the end of 2011, but there was no such announcement from the Dockers coach to conclude 2016. It has been a disastrous season for Fremantle, winning just four games on the back of a minor premiership and preliminary final appearance in 2015. But it at least finished on a high with a 20-point victory at Domain Stadium against the finals bound Western Bulldogs on Sunday.
It was a day celebrating the career of former captain Pavlich, who played his 354th and final game. Pavlich kicked his 700th goal in the first quarter to cap a career that includes six AllAustralian selections and six best-and-fairest awards. Pavlich, who says the right time to retire, was pleased the Dockers finished the season on a winning note. "I came here as a 17-year-old who had to mature and learn a lot along the way, and the club and myself have really grown up together," Pavlich said. "This year has been challenging but I leave with not one regret and I feel like I've absolutely emptied the tank. "Hopefully this performance can springboard us into a strong pre-season." Given Lyon has been
accustomed to coaching teams deep into finals at both St Kilda and Fremantle, an early end means there's no rush to make any decision on the future of players. With up to 20 eligible to play in the WAFL finals with Peel Thunder, what lies ahead for them won't be decided immediately - and that includes the likes of Matt de Boer, Tendai Mzungu, Nick Suban, Anthony Morabito and Clancee Pearce. "There's no urgency on anything. Our players come in 12 o'clock Monday. We'll have 20 that continue on with Peel Thunder and they're really committed and they're enthusiastic," Lyon said. "The other guys that will start their annual leave, we'll have them in Monday, Tuesday. There's protocols that you need to adhere to. There'll be no review."
ollingwood coach Nathan Buckley is adamant his AFL side has bottomed out, having missed finals for the third year in a row. The Magpies improved in the second half of the 2016 season, culminating in a one-point loss to triple reigning premiers Hawthorn in the final round. They finished 12th on the ladder after recording nine wins. Buckley noted "when it comes to Collingwood the expectation always exceeds the capabilities". But the fifth-year coach, who played 260 games for the Magpies and recently declared he's likely to be out of a job if they fail to reach the 2017 finals, predicted bigger and better things next year. "The reality is that we've missed finals in '14, '15, '16 and we've bottomed out but we're on our way
back up," Buckley said. "We're not going back any further and we've been able to regenerate and get some really highend talent. "We've got some really good opportunities going forward if we make the most of what we've got." Buckley will travel to the United States during the off-season, seeking to learn some lessons from college football sides. "We need to continually find points of difference in the way we do things," he said. Buckley was tightlipped when asked about Graeme Allan, who is expected to replace Neil Balme as the Magpies' head of football. Regarding the offseason frenzy and what sort of players he wanted to recruit, Buckley said he was interested in "any way we can improve our list".

HAWKS
still in good spot: Smith
FOOTBALL
H
awthorn midfielder Isaac Smith insists his AFL side are still sitting pretty as they prepare for the business end of a tilt at history. The Hawks face Geelong in a qualifying final at the MCG next Friday as they seek to win a fourth consecutive premiership. It is a feat that has only been achieved once in the VFL/AFL, by Collingwood in 1927-30. Hawthorn have been far from convincing in their past four games - losses to Melbourne and West Coast, an easy win over North Melbourne and a onepoint triumph over Collingwood. But the dramatic victory at the MCG on Sunday ensured the Hawks would finish in the top four and that achievement shouldn't be sneered at. "You're always in a good spot to
have a crack at it when you're top four. You get the second chance," Smith said. "We're in as good a spot as anyone in the top four.
