HINCH VOWS TO NAME AND SHAME PEDOPHILES

D

erryn Hinch has vowed to name names of convicted sex offenders under parliamentary privilege during his first speech to the Senate. The former broadcaster, who has long campaigned to name and shame pedophiles, will deliver his first speech at 5pm on Monday. "Names will be named. That's all I'll say," Senator Hinch told the Seven Network.

OUTRAGE OVER TROOP UNIFORMS MADE IN CHINA

A

key crossbench senator warns it "fails the pub test" to allow the dress uniforms of Australians troops to be made overseas. The $9 million contract has been awarded to Australian Defence Apparel which is manufacturing the uniforms in China, the ABC reports. "What's really on parade here is a failure to support Australian jobs by people that seem to know the price of everything and the value of nothing," Nick Xenophon said in a statement.

CHURCH GAVE PEDOPHILE PRIEST 'NEW START'

A

Catholic priest was given "a new start" at a NSW parish despite being under a cloud of child sex abuse complaints, a royal commission has heard. The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse was told that John Joseph Farrell, 62, was appointed to a clergy position at Tamworth east in 1984, not long after he'd left the Moree parish because of complaints he'd sexually abused a number of boys. Counsel assisting the inquiry Gail Furness SC said the then-bishop of Armidale allegedly told the parish priest in charge of Tamworth that Farrell had "made a mess of things in Moree and needed a new start".

LEGO CONTINUES TO GROW

L

ego, the Danish company famous for its popular coloured toy blocks, says sales have continued to grow in the first half of 2016, thanks in particular to strong demand in Europe and Asia, while the Americas were flat. The privately-held group says net profit was 3.5 billion Danish kroner ($A689 million), the same as the equivalent period last year. Lego says revenue increased by 10 per cent, adding sales growth was driven by lines like Lego City and Lego Ninjago. CEO Joergen Vig Knudstorp said the double-digit growth "through more than a decade is a testament to the never ending possibilities that children find in LEGO play.'' The western Denmark-based number group has more than 18,000 employees around the world. Lego doesn't release quarterly figures.

UK TO BUILD WALL TO STOP CHANNEL MIGRANTS

B

ritish officials say a 4 metre high wall will be built to deter migrants trying to reach Britain from the northern French port of Calais. Home Office Minister Robert Goodwill says the kilometre-long barrier is part of a 17 million pound ($A30 million) package of security measures agreed to by Britain and France. He says construction will begin "very soon.'' Thousands of people from the Middle East and Africa have travelled to Calais, hoping to reach Britain by stowing away on trucks and trains through the Channel Tunnel.

MARILYN'S

'HAPPY BIRTHDAY' GOWN AUCTIONED

T

Camerawoman on trial for migrant assault

H

ungarian prosecutors say a camerawoman who was notoriously filmed kicking and trying to trip migrants near the border with Serbia in September 2015 has been indicted for breaching the peace. Petra Laszlo, who later apologised for her actions while

also trying to justify them, was fired by the right-wing N1TV after footage of her actions went viral on social media. Laszlo said at the time that she panicked as refugees and migrants broke through police lines near her position and she felt under attack. She

kicked a boy and a girl and later tried to trip a man carrying a boy. Laszlo later told Russian newspaper Izvestia that her life was "ruined'' and she was considering moving to Russia. Laszlo's trial will be held in the southern city of Szeged.

he iconic dress Marilyn Monroe wore during her breathless rendition of "Happy Birthday" to President John F Kennedy is going under the hammer. Julien's Auctions is offering the sequined stunner on November 17 in Los Angeles. The auction house believes it could fetch as much as $US3 million ($A3.9 million). Monroe wore the barely-there dress at Kennedy's birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden in 1962. It was so form-fitting, Monroe had to be sewn into it. The dress was last sold in 1999 for $US1.26 million. Prior to the sale, the dress will be showcased at MANA Contemporary in Jersey City, New Jersey, and the Museum of Style Icons in Newbridge, Ireland.

PLAYBOY WINS COPYRIGHT FIGHT OVER LINKS P

layboy has won a legal fight to stop a website from posting links to images published without permission in a decision that could have far wider consequences across the internet. The European Union's top court decided that posting s u c h links infringes copyright

when the website doing it is seeking to profit from pictures published without permission. Sanoma, Playboy's Dutch publisher had sought to get website GeenStijl, which describes itself as one of the most visited news websites in the Netherlands, to remove a web link to photos of a TV celebrity Britt Dekker which were posted illegally. "It is undisputed that GS Media (which owns GreenStijl) provided the hyperlinks to the files containing the photos for profit and that Sanoma had not authorised the publication of those photos on the internet," the Luxembourg-based European Court of Justice (ECJ) said in a statement. GS Media said the ruling was a blow to press freedom. The issue of hyperlinking to photos and articles has become a divisive issue with the spread of the internet.

Recover or New! Pick-up and delivery included

Content owners argue that the ease with which people can post links to copyrighted material on the internet infringes their rights while internet users say restricting people's ability to post links goes against the principle of freedom of information. The European Commission, the EU executive, is set next week to propose tougher rules on publishing copyrighted content, including a new exclusive right for news publishers to ask search engines like Google to pay to show snippets of their articles.

Tourists rescued from French cable cars

D

ozens of tourists who were trapped in cable cars dangling above the Alps overnight, including a 10-year-old child, have all been safely rescued. The mountain rescue ser-

vice in the French city of Chamonix says the travellers were brought Friday morning to Chamonix and the Italian town of Courmayeur. A series of cable cars got stuck after cables tangled at

3,600 metres altitude over the Mont Blanc massif in the Alps on Thursday, prompting a major rescue operation. The interior minister said 65 people were rescued, but 45 had to be left there overnight after

rescue operations were halted because of rough flight conditions for helicopters. Rescuers provided blankets, food and water to help weather the chilly mountain nighttime conditions.

Too soon to take giant pandas off list A leading conservationists says it 's too soon to downgrade the conservation status of China's giant pandas, after the International Union for Conservation of Nature took the species off its endangered list. The giant panda has emerged as a success story for conservation in China and as of the end of 2015 China had 1,864 giant pandas in the wild, up from about 1,100 in 2000, with 422 in captivity, according to the government. On Sunday, the International Union for Conservation of Nature reclassified the species as "vulnerable" rather than "endangered", citing growing numbers in the wild due to decades of protection

efforts. But Zhang Hemin, of the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda, known in China as the "father of pandas", told the official Xinhua news agency that this was a hasty move. "A severely fragmented natural habitat still threatens the lives of pandas, genetic transfer between different populations will improve, but is still not satisfactory," Zhang said in a report late on Tuesday. "Climate change is widely expected to have an adverse effect on the bamboo forests which provide both their food and their home. And there is still a lot to be done in both protection and management terms."

METEORITE WHIZZES PAST CYPRUS AND EXPLODES

A

suspected meteorite has done a close fly-by over Cyprus, sending people into consternation over a blitz of bright lights which appeared in the night sky coupled with large bangs. "It had a 45 degree tilt and a bang was heard as it passed over Cyprus," said Ioannis Fakas, the honorary chairman of the Cyprus astronomical society. People living in the mountainous Troodos range re-

ported green-white glows in the sky at around one in the morning, then large blasts, police said. Some reported the ground shook. Parts of the meteorite were thought to have fallen into the sea north of Cyprus, Fakas told state TV. "It wouldn't have weighed any more than a few kilos," he said. "When it crossed Cyprus it exploded," he told the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation.

THAILAND JAILS AUSSIE ECSTASY DJ FOR LIFE

A

26 year old Australian man caught with 61 ecstasy pills has failed to have two life jail sentences reduced after losing an appeal in a Thai court. Jake Mastroianni, 26, was arrested in the Thai seaside resort of Pattaya in August 2014 along with a 28 year old Briton Lance Whitmore. Both were arrested for possession of ecstasy pills, with Whitmore charged with having 200 pills. Whitmore, a former British soldier, received a 50 year jail term after pleading guilty to the charges, half that of Mastroianni's. On Tuesday both men, shackled and wearing Thai prison clothing, had an appeal to have their sentences reduced rejected by a Thai criminal court. Both men are being held at Bangkok's top security Klong Prem jail, with a reputation for harsh living conditions. Mastroianni, a popular DJ in Melbourne before coming to Thailand, had also worked at Thailand's famous "full moon" party on Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand. Known by a stage name "Badmouth" Jake Mastroianni, he had also worked at the Sapphire Club in Pattaya, 150 kilometres southeast from

Bangkok, where he made an appearance in August 2014, according to the Club's Facebook page. AAP has sought comment from Mastroianni's lawyers at Thailand Bail. Earlier, Jeffery Stevens, a lawyer at Thailand Bail, representing both men, told The Guardian newspaper, they had hoped the court would reduce the already severe sentences. "We've done everything we can," Stevens said. "At the end of the day, Lance did plead guilty. We were not fighting the fact that he was guilty." A legal consultant for Mastroianni, Nathan Feeney, told The Guardian his client would have received a much lighter sentence if he had pleaded guilty but his previous lawyers had advised him not to. A spokesperson from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) told AAP it was providing consular assistance to an Australian man imprisoned in Thailand. According to DFAT reports there are 15 Australian prisoners held in Thailand, eight of whom face jail terms for drug related offenses. Reports said Mastroianni could qualify for a prison transfer application to Australia in six years.

Tourists dance to music during a full moon party on the beach in Koh Phangan, Thailand. Thousands gather each month on the night of the full moon in what many are calling the world's largest beach party on the tiny Koh Phangan Island 530 kilometers (330 miles) south of Bangkok.

HUGE MARIJUANA STASH ON GREEK SPEEDBOAT

G

reek authorities say they've seized nearly a tonne of marijuana on an inflatable speedboat that was abandoned after a chase in the west of the country. The coast guard says they pursued the 10-metre boat Monday, but the only man on board managed to beach the craft and escape on foot near the town of Messolonghi.

A coast guard statement Tuesday said a total 920 kilograms of marijuana was found packaged on the speedboat. It's unclear where the drugs had come from or where they were heading. Western Greece is on a major smuggling route for Albanian-grown marijuana headed for western Europe.

Teen punched trying to protect customer

A

teenager working at a KFC outlet in Melbourne has been punched in the face while shielding a customer from an assailant. The 16-year-old worker stood in front of the customer - also a 16-year-old boy - who had run back into the fast food outlet after being attacked on the street. The customer had just left the Greensborough KFC when he was pushed from behind by an unknown man about 10.30pm on Friday night. The attacker followed the teen who fled into the store and demanded he hand over

his mobile phone. He then jumped the counter and punched the KFC worker in the face in a bid to get to the teen. He wrestled with his first victim, snatched his phone and fled. The KFC worker sustained minor injuries. Police say the assaults could be linked to an attempted carjacking that happened nearby a few hours earlier. A woman was in her car when a man opened her front passenger side door and got into the car. She screamed and he fled after nearby motorists came to her aid.

Mixed reaction to new Apple iPhone

T

he features of the iPhone 7 have split the technology industry, impressing some, but leaving others feeling underwhelmed. Geoff Blaber from analyst firm CCS Insight said that Apple had arguably exceeded expectations with the 7 and 7 Plus. "In the context of a smartphone market that is firmly in an innovation drought, there's a strong argument that the iPhone 7 is more than an iterative update," he said. "Upgrades are all important to Apple and for consumers coming from an iPhone 5s or iPhone 6, the iPhone 7 will

feel like a considerable step up." However, smartphones expert Ernest Doku from comparison site uSwitch said the iPhone 7 would fail to grab the attention of many. "Despite being touted as a credible numbered sequel, it was difficult to escape the feeling that the iPhone 7 is very much an iterative device rather than the step change needed to allay concerns of falling fortunes," he said. "Having said that, the device nailed the key features consumers look for in a flagship smartphone, from an improved display and increased resilience to water and dust, to an improved

camera and better battery life. "Only time will tell if this is the model to help Apple to break away from Samsung, who is aggressively biting at their heels with a strong line-up in the Galaxy S7 and Edge." The controversial decision to remove the headphone jack from the two iPhones could also prove pivotal to the iPhone 7, it was claimed. "The removal of the headphone jack will be the spark for widespread innovation in accessories and a meaningful revenue opportunity for Apple," Mr Blaber said, also praising the

ony Interactive Entertainment, a division of Sony Corp, has unveiled two new versions of its PlayStation 4 Console in an effort to help Sony maintain its sales lead over Microsoft Corp and Nintendo Co Ltd. The PlayStation 4 Pro, which will launch November 10, will support higher resolution and more realistic imagery by enabling 4k resolution and higher dynamic range (HDR), said Andrew House, chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, at a PlayStation event in New York City on Tuesday announcing the new products. The console will cost $US399 ($A520). Additionally, the company unveiled a slimmer, lighter and more energy efficient version of its PlayStation 4 Console, which will come out September 15 and will cost $US299 ($A390). PlayStation Pro, whose code name is "Neo," will support Sony's virtual reality headset, due to launch in October. The PlayStation VR headset will go on sale in the United Sattes on October 13 with 50 titles available by

news that the 7 is water and dust resistant for the first time. "Twelve months from now, the removal of the headphone jack will be viewed as an Apple masterstroke," he added. "iPhones have had a poor reputation when it comes to accidental drops and water damage. "The IP67 rating on the iPhone 7 will be welcome news for careless owners and will doubtless hurt some of the numerous repair shops that have appeared on every high street."

the end of the year, the company has said. Additionally, Sony will make an upgrade available that will enable all 40 million users of its PlayStation 4 console to upgrade to HDR, House said. Netflix Inc will launch a new app when the console launches with 600 hours of 4k content, including its hit crime series "Narcos," House said. Google's YouTube unit is also planning an app for PS 4 Pro, he said. Since the 2013 launch, Sony has sold more than 40 million units of the PlayStation 4 console, far outpacing Microsoft Corp's XBox One and Nintendo's Wii U. Sony has said the games business is set to be its biggest growth driver, helped by strong PS4 console sales, a rise in subscribers to its PlayStation network and the launch of its virtual reality headset. In the financial year through March 2017, Sony expects the gaming unit to account for 45 percent of its overall operating profit. Sony forecasts PS4 sales at 20 million units for this financial year, up from the previous year's 17.7 million units.

VIC TRIALS TECH TO VIC Drone Crash Leads STOP DRIVERS TEXTING To Chilly Rescue

T

echnology that could stop drivers from texting when they're behind the wheel is being trialled in Victoria. Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer recently revealed the technology was being piloted and claimed "if it works it will be fantastic". Mr Fryer was asked how the technology could stop drivers from texting but allow passengers to still send messages. "We are going through

some trials at the moment and are hoping to bring in some innovation," he told reporters in Melbourne. "We are not in a position to talk about that at this stage. "But when we are ready to talk about it we'll come out quite loud and proud and talk about it (then)." He said the world-first technology was being developed with input from trucking magnate Lindsay Fox and other industry experts.

A

man has been rescued after a late night dive off St Kilda pier, to save his fallen drone, left him so cold he couldn't climb out of the water. Around 2.45am police were called to rescue a 22-year-old man who had stripped-off and dived in after his drone which had plunged into the bay. The man got cramps

due to the icy water and couldn't climb back onto the pier. A passer-by and the man's friend managed to cobble together a makeshift rope out of clothing which he held onto until police rescued him. He was taken to hospital suffering from the cold while his drone remains lost in the bay.

OLDEST FOSSILS FOUND IN GREENLAND

This photo provided by Allen Nutman shows a rock with stromatolites, tiny layered structures from 3.7 billion years ago that are remnants of a community of ancient microbes. Scientists have found what they think is the oldest fossil on Earth, dating to a time when Earth's skies were orange and its oceans green. In a newly melted part of Greenland, Australian scientists found the leftover structure from microbes that lived on an ancient seafloor, according to a study in the Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, issue of the journal Nature.

T

he earliest fossil evidence of life on Earth has been found in rocks 3.7 billion years old in Greenland, raising the chances Mars also hosted life aeons ago. The experts recently announced they've found tiny humps, between one and 4 cm tall, in rocks at Isua in south-west Greenland that they said were fossilised groups of microbes similar to ones now found in seas from Bermuda to Australia. If confirmed as fossilised communities of bacteria known as stromatolites -

rather than a freak natural formation - the lumps would pre-date fossils found in Australia as the earliest evidence of life on Earth by 220 million years. "This indicates the Earth was no longer some sort of hell 3.7 billion years ago," lead author Allen Nutman, of the University of Wollongong, told Reuters of the findings that were published in the journal Nature. "It was a place where life could flourish." Earth formed about 4.6 billion years ago and the relative sophistication of

stromatolites indicated that life had evolved quickly after a bombardment by asteroids ended about four billion years ago. "Stromatolites contain billions of bacteria ... they're making the equivalent of apartment complexes," said Martin Van Kranendonk, a co-author at the University of New South Wales who identified the previously oldest fossils, dating from 3.48 billion years ago. At the time stromatolites started growing in gooey masses on a forgotten seabed, the Earth was

probably similar to Mars with liquid water at the surface, orbiting a sun that was 30 per cent dimmer than today, the scientists said. Those parallels could be a new spur to study whether Mars once had life, the authors said. "Suddenly, Mars may look even more promising than before as a potential abode for past life," Abigail Allwood, of the California Institute of Technology, wrote in a commentary in Nature. The Greenland find was made after a retreat of snow and ice exposed long-hidden rocks.

ADELAIDE DRONE RACES A WORLD FIRST

D

rone racing has joined the ranks of scone baking as a hot contest at this year's Royal Adelaide Show, as the popularity of the flying machines continues to soar in Australia. Organisers of the Australian International Drone Championship say it will

be the first of its kind in the world to be watched by a crowd of thousands. Competitors will race "first person view" (FPV) drones, which travel at around 100 km/h and have a camera that lets the driver watch the race from the air on a headset or screen. Winners from nightly bouts during the show, which runs from September 2-11, will progress to later rounds to battle for $25,000 in prize money.

The Model Aeronautical Association of Australia (MAAA), which is helping run the races safely, says the sport is growing rapidly and is particarly attractive to young gamers. "It's very similar to what they do when they sit in their bedroom and fly whatever they fly on the computer," MAAA president Neil Tank said. "It's a computer game taken outside, they're flying this machine as if they're sitting in it." Adelaide FPV Racing Chairman Alan Boldock said his club launched in late 2015 and dozens of people are coming on board each month. He said lifelong friends had been born from the sport's geeky solidarity, with most members building their own drones instead of buying them fly-ready.

"There's that whole geeky statistics, 'I've got this motor, you've got that motor' thing. It's almost like Pokemon 'we're in a battle and mine's stronger'," he said. "People are looking for some kind of social group and this is providing that. Personally, I've made a whole new set of friends, who are instantly like minded. ""We've got people who are 55 who've just started flying, 12-year-olds who've just started flying, and fathers and sons who are both flying. Unfortunately it is very gender biased, it's mostly men." The Royal Adelaide Show has led the charge in establishing the championship, with chief John Rothwell describing it as the perfect mix of technology and rivalry. "The first show at 1840 in Adelaide was about

APPLE WARNS OF SCAMS WITH ITUNES CARDS A

pple is warning its US consumers about scam artists who pressure their victims into transferring money by purchasing iTunes gift cards after the fraudsters spin a bogus story about unpaid bills or a relative who needs bailing out of jail. Authorities have previously warned about similar scams involving pre-paid debit cards. But in recent months, the IRS and the Federal Trade Commission have said criminals are using the popular Apple gift cards as an easy, and difficult-to-trace, method of transferring cash. In a typical scheme, a con artist calls a victim and claims to be a tax officer, bill collector or a lawyer

representing a relative who's just been arrested. Victims are told to purchase several hundred dollars' worth of gift cards and then provide the 16-digit code from each card, usually over the phone. Fraudsters use the codes to redeem the value of the cards or even re-sell the numbers online. Apple posted a warning on its website on Friday, advising that iTunes cards should only be used for online purchases of digital music, books or apps, and not for transferring money. The company also said it's giving retailers tips on helping potential victims, often people buying cards in large quantities.

competition. People were boasting about how good they were at breeding their livestock or growing plants and it's the same with drones. Competition is in our blood," he said. "The show is reflecting what's actually happening in our community and technology is so much a part of it. "Very little has been done in this area to date. At the California State Fair last year they had drone competitions, but not in front of a large audience." Mr Boldock said the uniqueness of the competition does come with risks, as the mobile phones of the expected nightly crowd of at least 10,000 could interfere with the drone frequencies. "Nowhere in the world has anyone tried to do this in front of a massive audience. The frequency we're transmitting on is similar to wi-fi and that may cause interference," he

said. Mr Tank said while the Adelaide event was likely to boost the drone frenzy, he did wonder how the machines would be regulated in the long run. "I can see issues in the future if they are not

regulated to some extent, issues in relation to invasion of privacy," he said. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) regulates drone use but people just flying for fun don't need their permission if they play by the rules, including a

120-metre altitude limit and a requirement to keep the craft in sight. A CASA spokeswoman said tens of thousands of people use remotely piloted aircraft in Australia recreationally, but it's hard to gauge exactly how many machines there are.

PHOTOS OF PHILAE ON COMET 'THRILLING'

T

he European Space Agency (ESA) says it now knows where its robotic lander Philae is on the comet 67P/ChuryumovGerasimenko. The agency said it had received images showing the lander stuck in a "dark crack." The images were sent back to Earth by a camera on the Rosetta probe after it flew within 2.7 kilometres of the surface of the comet. Until it received the pictures, ESA had been unsure of the precise location of the lander. Laurence O'Rourke, who co-ordinated the search for Philae, said in an ESA blog post he was "very excited and thrilled" to have the photo of Philae. Philae bounced after first touching down on the comet in November 2014, then ended up at a location named Abydos on the comet's smaller lobe. Having missed its intended

landing spot, Philae was left short of sunlight to charge its secondary batteries and after three days went into hibernation. It woke up and communicated briefly with Rosetta in June and July

2015 as the comet came closer to the Sun and more solar power was available. The ESA scientists were especially pleased to receive the photos, which were taken on Friday, because there is only a month left in the Rosetta mission. "This remarkable discovery comes at the end of a long, painstaking search," said Patrick Martin, ESA's Rosetta mission manager. "We were

beginning to think that Philae would remain lost forever. It is incredible we have captured this at the final hour." The photos clearly show the main body of the lander along with two of its three legs. The images also provide proof of Philae's orientation, making it clear why communicating with it was so difficult. Rosetta is scheduled to

descend to the comet's surface on September 30 to investigate the comet from close up, including the open pits, where scientists hope to find secrets of the body's interior structure.

NICOLE KIDMAN SAYS ADOPTING HELPED IN ROLE

N

icole Kidman says having her own adopted children helped her relate to her character in the new film Lion. The Australian actress, who has an adopted son and daughter with exhusband Tom Cruise, joined co-stars Dev Patel and Rooney Mara at the movie's world premiere in Toronto. The drama tells the real-life story of Saroo Brierley, who was adopted by an Australian couple after being separated from his family in India aged five, and then located his original home using Google Earth 25 years later. Kidman, who plays Brierley's adoptive mother, said she wanted to appear in the film because the story was "so powerful and true". "Obviously I have adopted children. It takes a village to raise children. The power of good

love, there's nothing like it, and where it comes from and how you get it. But the nurturing quality of good love is extraordinary," she said. "The power of somebody wanting to find home, I think, is just a wonderful, cinematic story." Kidman, 49, also has two biological daughters with her husband, singer Keith Urban.

DiCaprio debuts climate change documentary

H

ollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio says he rushed to release his upcoming climate change documentary Before the Flood ahead of November's US presidential elections to issue a clarion call to US voters in time to influence their decisions. "We wanted this film to come out before the next election because ... the United States is the largest contributor to this issue," DiCaprio said to the audience after the film's world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday. "We cannot afford, at this critical moment in time, to have leaders in office that

do not believe in the modern science of climate change," he added. The film follows the Oscarwinning DiCaprio and actorfilmmaker Fisher Stevens as they travel from Canada's oil sands to tiny Pacific islands, interviewing world leaders such as the Catholic Church's Pope Francis and US President Barack Obama, climate scientists and academics. DiCaprio's interview subjects discuss and document the negative impacts of industrialisation and increasing consumption on the health of the planet. "The fact that we are still debating any of this is just

utter insanity to me," DiCaprio said. The actor, who won an Oscar this year for playing a fur trapper battling nature's elements in The Revenant, was an executive producer on 2014 Oscarnominated documentary Virunga, about the threatened gorillas in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This year, he is an executive producer on Netflix documentary The Ivory Game, about Africa's illegal ivory trade, also making its debut at the Toronto film festival.

Before the Flood is out in New York and Los Angeles theatres on October 21 and airs on National Geographic Channel globally on Oct. 30.

NEW MICHAEL HUTCHENCE SONG SNIPPET DROPS

T

he final 11 seconds of a previously unreleased Michael Hutchence song called Kik It have been released online. The song will be the first single from the 15 previously unheard tracks Hutchence recorded shortly before he died that are set to be put out next year by Sydney businessman Ron Creevey and LA producer Danny Saber. "He (Hutchence) named it and this was his favourite song. Kik It is very rock," Creevey told AAP. "It's going to be the first single. We're still playing around with it and will release it between November and January." Creevey said the documentary he is producing about Hutchence's life will be finished by November. "We're nearly done, we've already filmed in four different countries," he said "We'll release it next year". The film includes shots of

the piano Hutchence played on during the band's massive concert at Wembley Stadium in 1991 and guitars of his that were in Zurich and still bear Hutchence's luggage tags. Creevey says they've also assembled some big names as talking heads for the documentary along with people who were working with Hutchence before he died. "By the time I'm finished, from an Australian perspective, I'll probably have the core of artists from that era talking about the impact he had on their life and the inspiration he had on them," he said. "When it comes to international artists they're as big as it gets." It will be released as a celebration of Hutchence's life next year as it will be 20 years since his death. "This is a story about how Michael lived and still everything I ever hear ...

relates to how Michael died," Creevey said. Meanwhile, INXS manager Chris "CM" Murphy also revealed he was making a documentary on Hutchence's life, announcing it a week after Creevey revealed his. Murphy is planning an onslaught of INXS projects over the next few years, including an INXS musical and an exhibition of the band's archives, in a deal between his company Petrol Records and Universal Music Group. Murphy was also involved in the creation of the Network Seven miniseries about INXS, Never Tear US Apart. But Creevey doesn't hold out much hope for this rival documentary. "I doubt very much Murphy will get a documentary up, I can't see any network in Australia backing it," he said. "Our documentary has got nothing to do with INXS, and Chris Murphy wasn't the

manager of Michael for four years before he passed away. So this is all about those last four years of Michael's life, and it's also a lot to do with, particularly, the last six months of his life." Creevey says the documentary and the music will be released for the benefit of Hutchence's daughter, Tiger Lily, who he says has seen some of the footage already. "It's footage of Michael enjoying himself, Tiger enjoying herself when they're young," he said. Creevey says he is flying to London next week to meet Tiger Lily and present her with some things that belonged to Hutchence. The Kik It snippet can be heard on Creevey's Facebook page but he won't be releasing the final version for a few months. "It's taken six months just to get this song right but it's been incredible," he said.

Meet Wishbone

All I want is a forever home full of love and cuddles, where I’m the only kitty in your world. I’m a sociable kitty and I’m super friendly. My favourite hobbies include lying around, eating, and having lots of pats. Sometimes I’ll work up the energy to rub up against your legs, but most of the time I’d prefer to bask in front of a window sill and wait for you to come to me. I’d like to be your one and only, so I need to be the only cat in my new home. RSPCA NO. 849525

MAN'S BEST FRIEND GIVEN AUSSIE CHANCE

A

Geelong man who adopted a stray dog he found on the side of a busy road in Greece has raised the thousands of dollars needed to bring her to Australia. Jacob Welsh found Chance lying in a pile of smashed glass and gave her a pat - and she's been by his side ever since.

But with his time in Greece coming to an end and attempts to find Chance a European home unsuccessful, "the sad reality of her going back on the streets" was all too real, Mr Welsh says. Fortunately, the bond will continue after a GoFundMe page to cover the cost of Chance's flights, vaccinations and quarantine smashed through the $3000 target within two days. "She will not spend another night on the street thanks to all the help we've received," Mr Welsh posted to Facebook on Tuesday. The money will give her "one last shot at having a good home", he said.

PETS “Snoopy” Pointer Cross / Cross Breed Male - 10 Months Old Hi there, my name is Snoopy and I’m outgoing and full of personality. I’m always on the go! I like to explore and investigate. My coat is easy to care for. I am too bouncy and excitable for a home with children. I’m bursting with energy and would love to be your jogging companion. Location: RSPCA Burwood East Phone: (03) 9224 2222

“Harley”

Before Mr Welsh had the opportunity to close the fundraiser about midnight on Tuesday, donations reached $5334. "At least you'll have an extra 2k to be able to get her some nice stuff," Beau Smith posted on the GoFundMe page.

BRINGING A DOG FROM GREECE TO AUSTRALIA • Process takes from seven months to two years. • At least six months prior to export to Australia, the dog must be microchipped, vaccinated for rabies and pass a blood test proving it is rabies-free • In the months before departure, the dog has to be treated for various infections and parasites including ticks and roundworm • Five days before the flight, the dog must pass a vet check • For at least 10 days after the flight, the dog must stay at a quarantine facility

orse-drawn carriages will remain a fixture of Melbourne's city streets until at least mid2017. Melbourne City Council has come under increasing pressure in recent years from animal welfare campaigners to scrap the carriages. The operator trading permits expiry date has been pushed back from February to June 2017 to allow for community consultation about the long-term arrangement for operators.

Looking for a new home “Zoe” Domestic Short Hair Cross Female - 1Yrs 6Mths Hi there, my name is Zoe and I can be a little shy to start with, but I’ll soon warm up to you. I’m a smoochy puss. I’d love to be your best friend. My coat is low maintenance. I would like to live in a mature family, as kids can be a bit overwhelming for me. I need to go to a home with no other pets. I am desexed. Location: RSPCA Burwood East Phone: (03) 9224 2222

“Luke” Greyhound Cross - Male 3 years I’m full of beans! I’m bursting with personality! I’m a sociable pooch. I don’t need a huge amount of grooming, but I’d enjoy a quick brush every few days. I am best suited to a home with older kids. I may be happy living with a friendly desexed dog. I like to keep in shape, so I enjoy daily walks. I am desexed. Location: RSPCA Burwood East Phone: (03) 9224 2222

“Wilbur”

Lop Eared Cross - Male 2Yrs 6Mths I am one friendly bunny. I enjoy a good pat. I’m very curious and like to explore and investigate. I would love to find a home with someone who is around a lot. My coat is easy to care for. I might be a little too energetic for children, but I’m perfect company for a house with adults. Local Classifieds 2017 Nissan GT-R Now On-Sale in Australia

T

he 2017 Nissan GT-R is now on-sale in Australia, heralding the most significant update to the R35 model since its initial Australian launch in 2009. The 2017 Nissan GT-R has been updated with an exciting new look both inside and out, as well as receiving major driving performance enhancements in key areas, which include a significantly reinforced chassis and more power from its twinturbocharged 3.8-litre 24-valve V6. The new GT-R is also more comfortable than ever before, with a new sense of elegance and civility that one would rarely find in such a high-performance super sports car. In all, these revisions represent the most significant changes made to the model since it global unveiling in 2007 and initial Australian launch in 2009. For the first time in Australia,

Nissan will offer a more circuit-focussed grade of GT-R, the Nissan GT-R Track Edition Engineered by NISMO. This grade is based on the Premium Edition, but with the addition of elements of both the Black Edition grade (no longer available in Australia) and Nissan GT-R NISMO. The Track Edition Engineered by NISMO is 5 kilograms lighter and has 10 millimetres wider front track width than the Premium Edition. It can also be identified by a badge on the centre console. Output for the GT-R’s awardwinning 3.8-litre V6 24-valve twin-turbocharged engine has been increased by 15 kilowatts compared to the previous MY15 model. It now delivers 419kW at 6800 rpm, thanks in part to an increase in boost pressure and an ignition-timing system that

is controlled at each individual cylinder - technology previously reserved for the GT-R NISMO. The new changes result in improved acceleration in the mid-range (3200 rpm and above) with maximum torque output available across a wider range of the powerband. Also like the GT-R NISMO, by more precisely controlling ignitiontiming at each cylinder, engine knock (imprecise detonation) has been significantly reduced while concurrently enhancing environmental performance through a cleaner, more efficient fuel burn. Dubbed the ‘VR38DETT’, the engine features plasma-sprayed bores (versus cast iron liners) for reduced friction, lighter weight,

enhanced cooling, superior power output and fuel efficiency. It also boasts a symmetrical independent intake and exhaust manifold system with twin highperformance turbochargers, a secondary air management system for improved cold-start emissions performance, a thermostatically controlled oilcooling system, an oil scavenger pump to maintain oil flowing to the turbochargers and a lateral wet and dry sump oiling system. Each engine is handassembled from beginning to end in a special clean room by meticulously trained ‘TAKUMI’ engine technicians. An aluminium plate is added to the front of each engine showing the name of these craftsman.

However Clarke has opted against the move in what will be his first full season in the commentary box. The 35-year-old is still yet to debut in the BBL, having turned his back on a contract to captain the Melbourne Stars for two seasons following his retirement from the sport after last year's Ashes series. He has since only played one match for Western Suburbs and as a marquee player in an inaugural Hong Kong T20 Blitz competition. He also announced his retirement from the international form of the ormer Australian captain will focus on his off-field career rather Twenty20 game upon taking up the Test captaincy at the start of 2011. WAWRINKA PLAYS DOWN 'BIG FIVE' INCLUSION

F

ollowing Stan Wawrinka's win at the US Open, it may finally be time to officially expand the 'Big Four' in men's tennis to the 'Big Five'. Since 2005, when Rafa Nadal won his first French Open crown, the Spaniard, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray have formed their own elite club, sweeping all but five of the grand slam titles. The 2009 US Open winner Juan Martin del Potro and 2014 champion Marin Cilic both interrupted the Big Four's dominance but only Wawrinka has repeatedly defied them. With his 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 7-5 6-3 victory over Djokovic on Sunday, Wawrinka captured his third major title, matching the haul of long-standing Big Four member Murray. The Swiss is only a

Wimbledon title shy of a career slam. Certainly Wawrinka gets Djokovic's vote for inclusion, having taken two of his three titles at the Serb's expense. "He deserves to be in the mix, no doubt about it," said Djokovic, who lost to the Swiss in the 2015 Roland Garros final. "Stan won three grand slams now and three different ones; (an) Olympic medal. "(He has) been around for so many years, and he plays best in the big matches." Wawrinka, who won his first major at the 2014 Australian Open, may be the ultimate big-game player in men's tennis. When he gets to championship match, the Swiss is money in the bank, winning his past 11 finals. Despite his latest victory and a growing resume,

Wawrinka insisted he was not in the same class as the Big Four and would not expect to join the club any time soon. "The Big Four, I'm really far from them," offered a humble Wawrinka. "Just look at the tournaments they won, how many years they have been there. "If you look, yes, I have three grand slams. How many Masters 1000 has Murray? They have been there (for) 10 years. "That's why I'm not there. I don't want to be there." Part of Wawrinka's modesty comes from a career in the shadow of elegant compatriot Federer. While Federer's style is polished and graceful, Wawrinka's is bullish and workmanlike by comparison, and his results as much a product of perseverance as skill.

DUSTIN MARTIN WINS ANOTHER AWARD D

ustin Martin continues to rack up AFL honours in a tumultuous year, winning his first best and fairest award at Richmond. A week after also making the All-Australian team for the first time, Martin beat last year's winner Alex Rance by one vote on Thursday night to win the Jack Dyer Medal. Martin has enjoyed his best season and is a Brownlow Medal contender behind strong favourite Patrick Dangerfield. But it has been tough off the field for the star Tigers midfielder. Last December, Martin was accused of threatening a

woman with a chopstick in a Melbourne restaurant. The Victorian Police and the AFL decided not to take any action. Martin apologised and the Tigers handed him a $5000 fine for being drunk in public. Also this year, Martin's father Shane was deported to New Zealand for links to the Rebels motorcycle gang. Richmond have given Martin time off during the season so he could visit his father. Martin, who rarely speaks in public, thanked the Tigers for their support after winning the Jack Dyer award. "I will keep this short and sweet, because you know I don't like to talk too much,"

Martin said. "I'd like to thank Peggy (O'Neal), the board and Brendon (Gale) for sticking by me. "I'm very blessed to have so many great people in my life and I'm very grateful for it." Martin also thanked assistant coaches Mark Williams, Greg Mellor and Ross Smith, who have all left Richmond. "'Choco' (Mark Williams), as every year, you've helped take my game to another level and I'm going to miss you around the club," Martin said. Also on Thursday night, coach Damien Hardwick strongly backed the current board as it faces a challenge

from the Focus on Football group. Club president Peggy O'Neal said it was vital that the Tigers stick together. O'Neal added that the club would release the findings of their football department review "very shortly".

FISHINGREPORT

S

pring has sprung, the weather is improving and the fish are getting quite an appetite. Species such as Southern Bluefin Tuna have continued feeding offshore from Flinders with quite a few hooked only to be lost in the 40 metre mark. It will be interesting to see if this continues as last year there were fish caught in October. Gummy sharks have been consistently on the prowl around the usual areas. Beach and boat alike have been productive with beaches such as Balnarring doing exceptionally well. It hasn’t been uncommon to bag out on 5-10+kg specimens. Salmon have also proved plentiful off beaches. Gunnamatta, Kilcunda have been some points of interest. Southern Bluefin Tuna: Recent events lately have been incredibly exciting for avid anglers. Instead of driving to places like Portland in which has access to the continental shelf, you can now launch from Hastings boat ramp and chase these pelagic species. The mass amount of bait fish, dolphins, seals and whales have been the major indicators as to what area you want to focus on. With the amount of Tuna caught being up around the 10 mark they may not stick around too much longer. However, it all depends on the bait. The Tuna will go where the food goes. These fish aren’t small either. The biggest weighed in around the 160kg mark with the second biggest not too far off weighing in around the 125kg mark. With that said these fish have some incredible bursts of power with enduring stamina.

Brought to you by:

Depending on the size, these fish won’t hesitate to keep fighting for up to 2 hours and even more (depending on your set up). So be prepared. Salmon and squid: Salmon have been a popular species to target at the moment as they have been spotted in large schools around Mornington and caught off beaches such as Gunnamatta. Recent catches have shown some quality fish. The smaller salmon provide a thrilling fight with nonstop head shakes and short runs, the bigger salmon run you up and down the beach, while doing anything and everything it can to shake your hook. Flicking metal slugs and bait have both been successful. However, Pilchards, Bluebait and live bait have been most successful. Squid have also been going well with hoods up to 40cm and weight up to 3kg in areas like Quail and Tyabb bank. Snapper: They have started to show up in the usual early season spots with some guys getting multiple captures of quality fish. This is only going to keep getting better as the water warms, best bait has been the usual Pilchards and Squid. Whiting: Gawaine Blake had a change of scenery and taste and donged the whiting in the southern end of Port Phillip Bay and reports .Slow tricky bite subtle anchor moves and small soft baits was the key Thank you and good luck next time you’re out on the water. UFC MELBOURNE R

edemption will be firmly on Luke Rockhold's mind when the former middleweight champion headlines UFC Melbourne in November. The American will fight 36-yearold Brazilian Jacare Souza at Rod Laver Arena with the winner likely to earn a title shot. And that may well be against Rockhold's conqueror back in June, Michael Bisping.

Rockhold, who hasn't fought since the Bisping beating in Las Vegas, downed Souza in a fiveround pre-UFC epic back in 2011. The tight victory earned him the

UFC FIGHT NIGHT MELBOURNE SUNDAY 27 NOVEMBER ROD LAVER ARENA

The Englishman knocked out Rockhold with a flurry of punches in UFC 199 to claim the title and will now face American Dan Henderson at UFC 204 in Manchester next month. The November 27 card in Australia comes a year after the last Melbourne event where Holly Holm knocked out Ronda Rousey to claim the women's bantamweight title. For Rockhold, 31, it's another visit to Australia. In 2014 he fought Bisping in Sydney and tapped out the man who eventually conquered him for the middleweight title. The victory was the third in a five-fight win streak that also saw him defeat Lyoto Machida before taking the title from the then undefeated Chris Weidman.

Strikeforce middleweight title. Souza, 36, is 6-1 since joining the UFC, with the only loss coming in a split decision to Cuban Yoel Romero. Souza has submitted three of his opponents since arriving in the UFC which should make for a nice mesh of styles with Rockhold who is known for his stand-up fighting. The UFC's middleweight division is currently one of the most competitive in the sport and also contains seventh-ranked Australian Rob Whittaker, who is riding a five-fight win streak and has designs on a title shot.

"We think if it's good enough for GWS down at Spotless, it's good enough for us down at Simonds," he told SEN Radio. The 2013 semi-final against the Dockers was only scheduled at Simonds Stadium because the MCG was unavailable and it was against a non-Victorian team. Cook said the redeveloped Simonds Stadium would be suitable for finals against any opposition except for bigdrawing Melbourne clubs such as Hawthorn and Collingwood. "I think we would still probably need to play them in Melbourne," he said. "But that's not an easy question to answer

our members who would say 'play it in Geelong's because it gives us the best chance of making a grand final'. "We don't think there's any excuse for us not to host a final if we deserve one and earn it." Former Western Bulldogs captain Brad Johnson pointed out what he believed were inconsistencies in the AFL's decision on Monday, referring to his club having to host Adelaide at the MCG in the first week of last year's finals. "Dogs didn't get Etihad against Adelaide last year for crowd, we had to go to MCG because it's the best venue in the state," he told RSN927.

CATS

WANT CONSISTENCY ON FINALS VENUES FOOTBALL

G

eelong chief executive Brian Cook says the Cats should be playing AFL home finals at Simonds Stadium from 2017 onwards. Cook has described the league's decision to

hold the September 24 preliminary final between Greater Western Sydney and either Hawthorn or the Western Bulldogs at the 24,000-capacity Spotless Stadium as a game-changer. Once the ongoing

redevelopment of Simonds Stadium is completed, the venue's capacity will increase to 36,000. The Cats will host the other preliminary final against either Sydney or Adelaide at the MCG.

Cook said Geelong's push to host more playoff matches at their home ground - as they did against Fremantle back in 2013 - had been strengthened.
