Background The Company was created in 1973. Ian McNee, current Managing Director, purchased the business in 1991. Ian is a time-served joiner with a keen eye for a quality product.

Ian McNee

Anne McNee, Ian’s wife and fellow Director, is fully involved with the Company and together they have expanded their interests in the construction business with the purchase of Storie (Argyll) Ltd., William Wallace & Son Ltd., Lawries Electrical and Osborne Skip Hire.

These companies now form and integral part of the company and complement the core business of Stewart McNee Ltd. McNee’s now has over 60 employees covering all trades, many of whom have been with the business since apprenticeship.

Sustainability From inception to the present day, a principle of steady, sustainable growth has been the watchword, ensuring that quality of craftsmanship and the ability to maintain a ‘hands on’ approach to management have been upheld, proof of which can be seen in a number of quality developments in the area. In addition to these developments, McNee’s have gained a formidable reputation for the design and construction of new homes on client’s sites as well as much admired extensions and renovations. The Company also work extensively and successfully in the commercial and public sector as main contractors or in partnership with other contractors, such as our partnership with Biwater on recent projects for Scottish Water in Oban, Rothesay and Helensburgh. We believe in sustainability and have a policy that applies to both the materials that we use and the community that we operate in. We work closely with our suppliers to ensure that all purchasing policies promote legal and sustainable forestry. Stewart McNee (Dunoon) Ltd had a turnover of £6.8m in 2008 and has been consistently profitable for the past 15 years.

Community Stewart McNee (Dunoon) Ltd is part of the local community and we strongly believe that our success has been in no small way due to our commitment to this community. Over 54%% of our turnover is spent in the Cowal area in the form of wages and with local suppliers. With almost all of our workforce living locally we play a vital role in the health of the local economy.

Cowal Games

Our support for the local community extends to sponsorship of the famous Cowal Highland Games, a number of youth football teams and the Cowal Hospice.

Training and Development Modern Apprenticeships in a variety of trades are offered each year to local youngsters. McNee’s were instrumental in the formation of the Argyll Construction Training Group, made up of around 50 local businesses and the CITB with the aim of developing a more skilled workforce.

Award to apprentice

Combined with on-the-job training McNee apprentices attend appropriate block release courses at college and have an enviable record of success.

Health and Safety Our Training Development Plan allows continuous monitoring of each employees individual needs in updating or learning new skills, and we have a Health and Safety Policy covering each site. Each of our employees have attended a CITB training course in Health and Safety. In addition, we have a contracted Health and Safety Consultancy to constantly monitor health and safety plans and risk assessments.

Quality We have a policy of employing ‘all trades’, thus reducing our dependency on sub-contactors and ensuring the highest quality of craftmanship. Where we do use sub-contactors for specialised areas such as blacksmiths, these businesses have worked with us for a number of years and are well aware of the standards we require. Our Sandbank workshop has benchhand joiners producing non-standard items to the quality standards we have set. Stewart McNee have won the Argyll and Bute Council Planning Design Award on three occasions:• Cammesview flats • South Hall Sawmill, and • 63 Shore Road, Innellan. Cammesview
