Councillor Peter Main, who was installed as the city's first citizen in a centuries-old ceremony in the council chamber, said he was inspired to seek the office by Gordon Williams, his partner for 34 years. Councillor Main, a Liberal Democrat councillor for Brislington West for the past 14 years, has promised to do everything he could to protect and defend the office of Lord Mayor. He was referring to the fact that an elected mayor will be chosen to run the city in November. The post of Lord Mayor, which is a ceremonial one, will continue. He also promised to promote more diversity and to "defend and strengthen" the gay community in the city. Councillor Main said he wanted to continue the work of Councillor Geoff Gollop, who was the first Lord Mayor to communicate with people using social networking. He wants to continue his work with the wide range of religious communities in the city and wants to help the Hindu community find a sanctuary where they could scatter the ashes of their loved ones. The Jubilee Year ………..60 years ago
When a Princess climbed up to Treetops and came down a Queen Growing up in a Commonwealth country, The Queen has always been special to me; I guess this has passed down from my dad who proudly shared with all that his dad was honoured by the King with an MBE for his service to the community and his efforts to bring communities together. He was known to be very pious. So following events of the Queen has been kind of a life time for me and my siblings. The story of the young princess who went up to Treetops to share a quiet moment with her husband and came down a Queen has been played to me over and over again in school and that makes me proud that it was in a small remote town by the slopes of Mount Kenya that the Queen came to being. So putting this page together has been an excitement as well as a privilege to be part of the millions celebrating this great achievement with the world’s most loved monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. On February 6th in 1952, outside Nyeri in the forest of the Aberdare Mountains, did a youthful Princess Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philipp climb up the ladders into a treetop hideaway, to spend the night watching the game parade by the waterhole below. Little did she know, and not learn of it until the next afternoon, that during that night her father had passed away and the crown had passed to her, turning her from Princess to Queen.
Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh admiring the view from a bridge in the grounds of Sagana Lodge, their wedding present from the people of Kenya. On June 2nd 1953In the presence of more than 8,000 guests, including Prime Ministers and Heads of State from around the Commonwealth, Queen Elizabeth took the coronation oath to serve her people and to maintain the laws of God and was crowned at a coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey in London after being handed the four symbols of authority - the orb, the sceptre, the rod of mercy and the royal ring of sapphire and rubies - the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Geoffrey Fisher, placed St Edward's Crown on her head to complete the ceremony.
“For the first time in the history of the world,” wrote big-game hunter Jim Corbett in the Treetops logbook, “a young girl climbed into the tree as a princess and climbed down as a queen.” Treetops, founded in 1932, is Kenya’s oldest safari lodge, and Corbett was in residence when Princess Elizabeth learnt of the death of her father while she was staying in a treetop cabin there on an official visit in 1952. Her momentous visit put Treetops on the map. Overnight it became the world’s most famous tree house, and was the beginning of a royal love affair with Africa that has continued to this day. The lodge itself is a venerable affair, a wooden triple-decker ship of the forest beached on the edge of a floodlit waterhole in the mountainous Aberdare national park. No need to go jolting around in the bush when you stay at treetops. Instead the animals of the forest come to you – lured by a natural salt lick. Elephant, buffalo and bushbuck are regulars – but bring warm clothes. At 6,450ft the night air is cold. Treetops are an ideal destination for peace and tranquility.

A 60 year pictorial Elizabeth II Looking at a Monarch in a world that has mostly left Monarchy behind, yet 60 years down the line two thirds of the British assume the Monarchy will still be around in a century. Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; born 21 April 1926 is the constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states known as the Commonwealth realms, and head of the 54-member Commonwealth of Nations. She is also head of state of the Crown Dependencies. On her accession in 1952, she became Head of the Commonwealth and queen regnant of seven independent Commonwealth countries: the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan, and Ceylon. Between 1956 and 1992, the number of her realms varied as territories gained independence and some realms became republics. Today, in addition to the first four aforementioned countries, Elizabeth is Queen of Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, and Saint Kitts and Nevis. Her reign of 60 years is the second longest for a British monarch; only Queen Victoria has reigned longer (63 years 7 months). Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee is being celebrated during 2012. Elizabeth was born in London, and educated privately at home. Her father acceded to the throne as George VI in 1936 on the abdication of his brother Edward VIII. She began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, in which she served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In 1947, she married Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, with whom she has four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward. Her coronation service took place in 1953, and was the first to be televised. Since she was a small girl, she has known her destiny. Though shy, she regards being Queen as a vocation, a calling which cannot be evaded. In the next few pages we take you through a pictorial life of the small woman with a globally familiar face, a hundred-carat smile – when she chooses to turn it on – and 1,000 years of history at her back. She is a woman of faith who stands atop the Anglican Church and is called Defender of the Faith and Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The Queen takes her role as the fount of Anglican respectability very seriously, addressing the General Synod and talking regularly to its leading figures. It’s sometimes forgotten that she’s also a woman of deep Christian faith and has drawn great sustenance from her faith during difficult times in her reign.

The Queen is known for her love of animals. Horses were the Queen’s childhood obsession; breeding horses and racing them have amused the monarch throughout her 60-year reign. She kicked off her Diamond Jubilee celebrations by attending the Epsom Derby. As one of her favorite events on Britain’s horse-racing calendar, it was a fitting place for the start of the four-day national celebration of her 60 years on the throne.

Head of The Commonwealth Queen Elizabeth II On the 12th of May 2011 she became the second longest serving in British history, have reigned for 21,645 days, beating George III’s record. In September 2015 God willing if she is alive, she will outlast Queen Victoria’s record. As head of state, Queen Elizabeth is the living symbol of nations, above all that of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland – though another 15 besides, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and smaller countries, down to Tuvalu. She is not like most other constitutional monarchs. The British state has neither single written constitution nor any founding document. Her enthusiasm for the Commonwealth of Nations, which is not the private passion of many British politicians, has made her more interested in the lives of the new black and Asian Britons than one might expect. The Queen is Head of the Commonwealth, a title invented in 1949 to allow the newly independent republican India to keep its association with Britain. This involves a huge amount of travel, in addition to visiting her other realms and the diplomatic and trade-boosting visits. These visits involve a lot of planning and travel, endless changes of dresses and hats and, above all, a huge amount of listening, nodding and smiling and most trying of all, are the speeches. The Queen pays two outward State visits each year, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh. She also regularly tours her other realms and member countries of the Commonwealth. During her reign, The Queen has visited countries which no other British monarch has ever visited. Historic firsts have included the first State visits by a reigning monarch to China in 1986, Russia in October 1994, Brunei and Malaysia in 1998, and Korea in 1999. Another historic visit was a six-day State visit to South Africa in April 1995, the first since 1947 following the end of apartheid. Among recent visits by The Queen have been State visits to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in October 2006, and State visits to Slovenia and Slovakia in October 2008. The Queen paid a State visit to The United States of America to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement in May 2007. In March 2006 The Queen visited Australia and Singapore for the Commonwealth Games, and in 2007 The Queen was present at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Uganda.

Hafiz Zaheer Shabir
Hafiz Zaheer Shabir Awarded The Lord Mayor’s Medal 2012 for his community work.
Profile
Hafiz Zaheer Shabir is second in a family of five sisters & two brothers. Since childhood he has been assisting parents in correspondence and other utilities during his school days. He was educated in Bury & Coventry Darul Uloom that provided Islamic and mainstream secondary education. He returned to Bristol for A- Levels and as he begun to study A -Level law, his barrister tutor identified that there was a need of BME people in the legal profession and he felt that Zaheer would fit that role very well. His tutor, Vince Johns, was the first person to nurture him, although many assume that the legal profession is strict and boring, his tutor made studying law, interesting, exciting and fun. This was in the 90’s and Zaheer was the only Asian student in the group. He moved on to London to pursue his law completing his professional qualification at Bristol University. It was during the time of his degree course that the community begun to appreciate that it was of utmost importance to have an Asian specializing in law within the community.
Coupled with his family Islamic upbringing as his dad was one of the front liners in family values & religious affairs in the mosque, and his early secondary education at an Islamic school, his career in the legal field was what the local leaders wanted as they felt they had a trusted hand pursuing a very engaging career that would greatly benefit the community. During his University days he started getting clients with legal issues on regular basis that he resolved; this was a good learning experience giving him an insight of customer relations. On completion of University and having received his degree he started his own legal consultancy, Jamia consultancy based on St Mark’s Road in 1999. The likes of his father Haji Mohammed Shabir and his uncle Nisar Ahmed provided Zaheer with unfettered advice of how to engage with the wider community and at the same time remain level headed. Beyond this point it was for him to follow the advice given by his mentors, follow the principals of the legal profession, and follow the best endeavor in his upbringing and the complete guidance from his faith that enabled him focus on community aspirations and personal developments in his career. Zaheer's initial public office post involvement with the community started with the Bristol Jamia Mosque Committee Totterdown This helped him to focus on a very diverse nature of faith & community relations. He was engaging with Avon Fire Services, Bristol City Council Avon & Somerset Constabulary, City Councilors, wider community and faith groups in order to represent the best interest of his mosque whether at meetings, conferences or via telecommunication. When he looks back he confidently says” the opportunity of developing my skills of engagement, corresponding & resolving issues have generated skills that I am now able to apply city wide”. In apparel to all this is his legal profession where he has undergone annual professional course that not only kept him updated in law but progressing his skills and conduct required in the context of legal services. Some ten years later having grasped multi-layered community issues he has been at the forefront of a number of developments in the city of Bristol. He is one amongst the few who were behind the formation of Council of Bristol Mosque, formation & development of Building The Bridge, formation & development of the current Pakistan Association Bristol & has developed the Voice & Influence of BME people in Bristol.
Zaheer at a Council of Bristol Mosque Open Day, Left: Matloob, & Tayeb Khan, and Tahir Mehmood on his right. His biggest challenge has been balancing his professional services, community Liaisons and family life. Zaheer proudly says, “The beauty has been a rock solid support of my family who fully understands and appreciate that the best guidance is the religious aspect of being rewarded by the Almighty”. He adds on, “For our next generations to take on these challenges without fear or selfishness, in order to make the difference so as individuals, groups or communities we are able to understand and tolerate one another”.

We shouldn’t fear giving our time to voluntary projects as whatever you are engaged with will still increase your abilities, skills & confidence. In my personal experiences I’m seeing many talented and gifted young people and that is a celebration in itself, but to actually develop communities these young people should volunteer at mosque level, school level, so the next thinking phase is also adopted in a measured way. If I can do it so can you! Zaheer has been honoured with the Lord Mayors Medal on the 25th of April and was one of the chosen few invites at HM Queen’s Diamond Jubilee at Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen in recognition of community engagement & development work where he takes this opportunity to pay gratitude & say thank you to all his colleagues, family and well-wishers.

Serving The Community… Maliha Berridge… ………I remember…
When I first started working for the police, there were many within the Asian community, who did not approve of me working here especially as I am a Muslim. I was one on the first civilians to work at a front desk. This was an extremely challenging role, where I had to deal with a range of enquiries from members of the public from reporting crimes, visitors for people in police custody, giving advice and getting people to sign bail. The following years, I worked at Police Stations across Bristol and South Gloucestershire. I have had many varied and challenging roles but my most memorable times in the Force, were as a Special Constable working at Trinity Road. Where I worked in St Pauls, Easton and Barton Hill. There I began assisting victims who were from the Asian background and who had language difficulties. This allowed me great opportunities to assist on really serious cases, often attending Crown Court to assist victims. I then joined the Royal Port of Bristol Police. Again I was the only Asian female, working in an all male environment. My most memorable time there, was where I was selected to carry out guard duty on The Royal Yacht Britannia, whilst the Queen and Prince Phillip visited Bristol. As a token of their appreciation, we were invited on board the Yacht to have tea, as well as being shown around the Yacht. After this I was presented with a Gold Royal Marines Badge, which I will always treasure, as they are rarely given out.
I am a British born Muslim with Pakistani heritage I’ve worked for Avon and Somerset Police for 28 years and am the longest serving Asian female in the Force. I joined the Police as part of the Youth Training Scheme (YTS) in 1984 when I was just 15 years old. I worked within various police departments, with the possibility of securing a job at the end of the scheme, the following year if I performed well. I was initially placed within the Research and Development Unit, where I worked as an office assistant. I can still remember my first day, I was very nervous as I had never worked in an all male environment. The police officers all wore blue shirts then, with heavy police trousers, and tunics and they all seemed extremely tall to me and had very loud voices. I was the first Muslim female to work there. It was a real eye opener for the officers as well as for me. I quickly discovered how friendly the police actually were, and though there is always the odd person, with their own issues, it was nothing that couldn’t be sorted out. Gradually I became involved in helping officers to understand the various Asian communities, the complexities of varying faiths within and the many diverse cultures. The officers began to understand that Asians were not just Pakistani, but there were Sikhs, Hindus, Bangladeshi and many more. At the end of the year, I was offered permanent employment within the Force. I then went on to work as an Enquiry Officer, at the front desk at Trinity Road Police Station.
Gradually I became involved in helping officers to understand the various Asian communities, the complexities of varying faiths within and the many diverse cultures. The officers began to understand that Asians were not just Pakistani, but there were Sikhs, Hindus, Bangladeshi and many more. I am currently working as a Community Engagement Officer, specifically for the Asian communities throughout Avon and Somerset. In this role, I work with the hard to reach communities, building trust, and confidence between the individuals or groups, linking them in with the police. Often I deal with victims who haven’t reported crime to the police, either through fear, language barriers or because they don’t understand the process or what is available to them. During my time within the police, I have made many friends, both within and outside. I have never regretted working here. When I first started working for the police, there were many within the Asian community, who did not approve of me working here especially as I am a Muslim. I have had to face many challenges but I am extremely fortunate to have such a supportive family and to have gained the respect and trust of not only the police, but also the communities.

There are many occasions when I look back over my career, and wonder if I would have done anything differently and I can say, that I would have not.
I have received two commendations, with several letters of thanks, not only from the public, but from officers and other forces in assisting them with complex cases. Recently I was awarded the Outstanding Customer Service Award for the second consecutive year. I feel really humbled as it is wonderful to receive the award even once. There are many occasions when I look back over my career, and wonder if I would have done anything differently and I can say, that I would have not. I have been fortunate to be in a position where I can help others to have a good quality of life not just for themselves, but for their families as well. I am proud of my achievements whilst working for the police. I hope that I may continue my work, as I have always done, making many friends on the way. It's a partnership you form; it's a companion you choose, hopefully for the rest of your life. This is a relationship where you are there for each other. How we look at marriage is important. The way we view it and approach it determines how our life could end up being. In the sub-continent & its Diaspora we spend so much of our emotions, thoughts, time and money (that which we have, and that which we borrow), on the run up to a marriage. But do we actually 'spend' all this time, effort, money and emotion on the actual marriage? In fact, we concentrate all these resources not on our marriage but on our wedding day. "Bade dhoom dhaam se shaadi", (wedding galore & pomp) is probably one of the most common phrases in these communities. There's so much of emotion, thought, focus, all concentrated on the 'event': 'How will our son/daughter look on that one day?' 'How will society perceive us and their chosen partner?' 'What will they say about the wedding arrangements, food or clothes?' Now, this 'they' or that, are our friends, relatives and other people in society whom we are acquainted with, and whom we hope to invite. Most of our energy goes towards making this one day a success. Even the choice of spouse is often linked to the driving need to make the day perfect. Have not all of us heard these statements: 'Meri beti engineer se shaadi karegi', (my daughter is getting married to an engineer). We imagine that people admire such choices, and their admiration makes us happy and that is a fact our community are still stuck on who is who. The bitter truth is that 'they' are not going to spend the rest of their lives with the groom or the bride.
Sometimes we simply choose the 'khandaani, the family or the aura surrounding the family, and not the individual himself or herself. 'My son is marrying so-and-so's daughter', 'my daughter is marrying so-and-so's son'. We tend to focus not on the groom or the bride but on the label attached on him or her. There are other important aspects of marriage, not only what ‘They’ or people talk. After we've spent the bulk of our time worrying about others' perception of us, or deciding what to wear, discussing arrangements, menus, guest lists and even research on honeymoon destinations, this ends up as time spent on preparing for 'the day'. But how much time do we spend on the most critical decision - selecting the right life partner? Don't we want to know them as human beings and understand their nature and value system? Are we on the same wavelength? Is this the person with whom we want our child to spend the rest of my life? Instead of taking ample time to make this crucial decision, often, marriages are fixed after just one meeting. 'Chalo baat pakki ho gayi. Muh meetha karo.'(Alright, proposal accepted enjoy some sweets)
In India, Pakistan & Bangladesh most marriages are arranged. We check on the prospective groom's or bride's family, caste, home, education, income, even bank balance, appearance and of course complexion. But all these are purely superficial. Why don't we utilise this valuable time and effort in understanding the couple who we are about to spend (hopefully) the rest of their life together.
Should you agree to spend the rest of your life with someone just because he or she carries an attractive label such as IIT or MBBS or heaven know what? No, I do not think so, I believe shared interests, like-mindedness, companionship, shared sensibility, and sense of humour – should all matter? Do you wish you could spend all this valuable time selecting your spouse and less on designing that wedding outfit?
Most of these marriages are about glamour & showmanship. Don’t get me wrong, wedding preparations need to be carefully planned & organised including the attire of the day, but save yourself a lifetime of torture & misery by reasoning out with families and understanding your future partner before jumping on the bandwagon just because maybe you were too excited at the pomp & glamour that was being planned or worst still that your parents kind of convinced you the that he or she has some initials after his name and this is the honour we want in our household. It’s you who is getting married so you must have your say.

Donna Summer
A Tribute
PICTORIAL
FIVE-TIME GRAMMY AWARD of Blue to a WINNER blog. AND THE FIRST ARTISTE TO HAVE THREE CONSECUTIVE DOUBLE ALBUMS REACH NUMBER ONE ON THE US BILLBOARD CHART, DONNA SUMMER DEAD AT 63. Donna came to fame during the Disco era in the 1970s and was known for her hits Love To Love You and I Feel Love. Donna was born Donna Adrian Gaines in Boston Massachusetts and sang in church choirs. Summers married actor Helmuth Sommer in 1973 before giving birth to the couple's daughter Mimi later that year. Although the marriage crumbled in 1975, she kept an altered version of her ex's surname to use as her stage name. Donna's first big success came in 1975 with Love To Love You, which many radio stations refused to play because of the sexual moans and groans in the background. And in the 1980s she continued to produce hits including State Of Independence, She Works Hard For The Money and Unconditional Love and This Time I Know It’s for Real. Donna’s sound was a mix of genres, this helped her earn Grammy Awards in the dance, rock, R&B and inspirational categories. The star known as the Queen of Disco was a seventies icon inspiring many young musicians and DJ’s who had floors packed each time a Donna Summer hit was played. She has been battling lung cancer for long. Donna believed she contracted the illness by inhaling toxic particles after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in New York. She is survived by her husband, singer and producer Bruce Sudano, daughters, Brooklyn, Amanda, and Mimi from her previous marriage.

The middle class and the working class pour all their earnings and savings into the wedding. The other sad aspect in these communities is money-We spend a lot of money on the wedding day. The rich spend beyond measure - each competing with the other in extravagance. The middle class and the working class pour all their earnings and savings into the wedding. If you have money, please, by all means, decide how you want to spend it. But for those who are not wealthy, for whom every penny earned is precious, for whom a daughter's wedding means pouring everything they have earned or saved into it, marriage means breaking fixed deposits, selling assets and taking loans, yes, I know this sounds funny but it is the reality of our marriages
Instead of spending all that money on the wedding day, why not give it to the girl to start her new life? Instead of a lavish function, why not have a simple, affordable wedding, and if you are blessed with a fortune have a the glamour and pomp as it pleases the society you live in but remember the most important aspect of marriage is to guide the couple into choosing the right lifetime partner and invest more into their future than the pomp & trumpet blowing. Or for those that cannot afford to go overboard, do not borrow, do not stress simply have a sharbat wedding? I believe sharbat weddings are a great idea. Call as many people as you desire, serve them a soft drink and thank them for coming and blessing the newly-weds. Have fun. Enjoy the day. Make merry, but with simplicity, in this fast changing world it’s time to request parents to tone this extravagance down. It’s time to say, “I don't want a big function. Let me use the money for something important that helps my life. Let me use the money to invest in building the foundation for a happy married life." And for those in search of marriage or in the process of getting married do not let all your emotions focus only on 'that day'. What will happen on that day? What will people think and say? Will the day be memorable? You should also think ahead of the next 40 years of married life? Let's not barter one day of happiness for a lifetime of unhappiness. Our emotions need to be invested not in that one day, but in a lifetime.
I am totally opposed to dowry. It is not only a retrograde practice but also an illegal one. Think about it - can a relationship, built on the foundation of money and greed, be meaningful or beautiful? Should we not invest in our daughter's education instead of saving up for her dowry? We should make her so accomplished and independent that she is capable of crafting her own future and becoming the master of her own happiness. Then she won't need a greedy, useless groom to complete her life. Let her marry a person who respects her. Let her marry a man who she believes is worthy of her; whom she is happy to spend the rest of her life with Think about life ahead, not just that one day. Let's give marriage the importance it deserves in every sense - financial, emotional and mental. Let's give our time, emotions and energies to plan the years that lie ahead as we plan our wedding day. Therefore, the key is the person you have chosen as your life partner. He or she is the only element you should be thinking about. And take your time to make the decision. Understand, probe, check, go deep. The better you do this, the happier life is likely to be. Marry only when you are fully satisfied about the character and temperament of the person you are marrying.

The French Connection Robina Malik Our French connection is a fashionista on one of the busy high streets in Bristol, her brand Eurotrends sandwiched between two popular fast foods outlets, surrounded by local banks, ideally situated close to the Frenchay campus and by the massive Fishponds Park. Robina Malik is one the few Asian women who have stepped out of the box and retails a line that is international not Asian like the many Asian boutiques mushrooming all across the Asian populated areas. Always sleek & elegant, charming & charismatic one will never miss that niche of an outgoing fashion brand. Our first encounter with Robina was in November 2010 as we were searching for a fashion outlet of an Asian entrepreneur that has some difference. Driving past the High street her window display caught my eye and without hesitation, walked in and introduced myself and that first thing that struck me was her elegance & eloquent. I got straight to business; we were looking for something different for our Christmas cover girls for the magazine. Without much ado she was up by the rails after enquiring the sizes of our models, which I will not disclose here, and here we were looking at some stunning outfits. The rest was handled by her & the models giving our Christmas edition a stunning cover. Supporting the community, Robina at I have always wanted to do a Bristol Fashion Festival 2012. feature on enterprising Asian women who through sheer hard work & dedication have been consistent in the world of Fashion & Beauty. Robina Malik was our obvious choice, she has been at it at the same base for a staggering 13 years, what more could a writer ask then to be given an opportunity to have a sit down interview with a trendsetter. Q: Hi Robina, let’s start with you as a person. R: I am quite a boring person, upbringing was simple, strict upbringing, went to school as normal, St. George school, hated school, left at 16 to get into employment. I worked at the chocolate factory, found it boring, looked back and thought I should have studied. I planned to go on a course unfortunately dad passed in 1978 and mum said no, funnily I wanted to do policing, it was a 2 year course in London, back then with our traditions & customs I had to stay back, mum was only 36 when she lost dad. I was really disappointed promised myself that when I have children I will never stop them pursuing their dreams, though I do not blame mum for not letting me pursue my dreams, I now understand what she went through then. Q: How many of you are in the family? R: We are four; I am second in a family of three girls and a boy. Q: When did it all start? I mean Eurotrends. R: It started off as a joke, a friend and I were into clothes party, hopping from one household to another sampling and selling our trends and this was working pretty well for us. People kept on asking where our shop was and as we did not have one, we simply answered, “It’s in the process” knowing very well that was not the case. On day we were out for lunch as we drove along Fishponds High Street, we noticed this place up for sale, I called the agency pretending that I was interested, though I had no intentions of buying it, next I had a look at the premises and within six weeks the keys were in my hands, I believe to this day, it was meant to be. Q: So what next? R: The shop was mine, it now sank in, my friend was on hand to help out, so I said to myself, here I am finally with a shop to trade on. Q What next, how did you come up with this theme? R: To start with the name, simple, Euro from Europe & the clothes were trendy so we had Eurotrends and French because my then partner & I had business in Germany, Paris being one of our sources of the business, that’s how I got the French Connection. From the beginning I wanted to keep it different, I did not want to go to London to buy like everyone else, we live in society where we can have the best of both worlds so why not with trends. Q: when did you launch R: We opened on the 10th of February 1999, I guess just in time for Valentine Day, my initial plans were to trade for five years and pack up, it’s now 13 years and we are still here Q Are you enjoying it R: Yes I do, I have some great loyal customers that are what brings me joy, and would you like a cup of coffee.
MAST THE MAGAZINE DIAMOND EDITION 2012 © BIG Q UNLIMITED ENTERTAINMENT UK
I am not lucky, I am blessed, that my daughter is now married and I have a gorgeous grandson Q: That’s hospitable, using one of my common phrase, ‘nice, go on then’, where were we, how was business then? R: We were the only clothes shop in Fishponds so business was booming, shopping for new trends in Paris was every two weeks to meet our customers’ requirements. The demand to expand arose; we extended in 2005 and introduced a much wider range. It was about this time I was looking to opening outlets in the centre & Clifton but due to family commitments I shelved the project. Q: As a pioneer Asian fashionista on Fishponds Road, what was it like when the other fashion houses started mushrooming in the vicinity? R: My style is different, though being Asian I briefly did stock Asian trends, but I always wanted to be different and, yes I am Asian, I am proud to be a Pakistani, that does not mean I have to sale Asian clothes, so having other outlets who are into the Asian trend does not affect me, I kind of combine authentic jewellery with European clothes and it works. Q: You are one of the few best dressed Asian woman in Bristol, have you ever felt this? R: Personally I like to keep tidy at all times, irrespective, I’m not the kind that dresses up only for occasions, I feel one should look their best every time you step out, many friends and customers say, "You are glamorous and sleek”, I am humbled with such comments. I strongly believe any person in any field must practice what they preach. Q: Bristol Asians have in the recent month’s gone Fashion show crazy, what’s your view on this? R: Being there, done it, had a fantastic time, I am happy that others are following the trend. Q: Brilliant, so what’s Eurotrends up to now? R:We are thinking of expanding, I now have time on my hands, I am not lucky, I am blessed, that my daughter is now married and I have a gorgeous grandson, Subhaan, I love him to bits so it’s time to take Eurotrends to another level. Q: What’s this “another level”? R: This other level is about me this year, as I step into my big Five O, a bit of relaxing, enjoying the time as it is and looking forward to adding a new concept to the French Connection. Q: You have said that with great enthusiasm and joy, we wish you well on your Big FIVE O and look to this new concept. If I may do you have any hobbies? R: I love cooking, I do love cooking, not because I am forced, I do enjoy cooking; I also enjoy gardening now that I work at a slower pace. Q: What would you rather be if not a fashion outlet? R: Back in the day I wanted to be an Air Hostess, but with the little negative talk about the career and being a British Pakistani Muslim, I knew I couldn’t, so travelling the world seeing places. Q: If you had to rewind the clock would have done things differently? R: Rewind no, not at all, I’ve been happy with what I’ve got and achieved, ups and downs and all that goes with life-if I had to re-live my life, I would be cautious this time Live and learn. Q: Most people we feature are keen to tell us of their community involvement, I see you have not touched that part. R: I feel that I haven’t given enough time to the community but there’s always time, now that I can, I will step in and chip in where I can. Q: We were able to talk to one of your very close confidants Paul Izzo and this is what he had to say about you, “I have been fortunate to have known Robina for over 20yrs, meeting her you notice just how exquisite and engaging she is, having time for everyone whom she meets, it’s no wonder she is extremely successful and focused on her customers giving them what they want, she is very personable, that’s what old fashion service is, Robina Malik. Q: In a sentence please sum up what lies ahead for you. R: I am excited and really looking forward to my new challenge as I said earlier, ‘I am not lucky, I am blessed in every way, I know I can do it, Inshallah, BECAUSE I’M WORTH IT. Q: It’s been nice talking to you, I know it’s been a number of sit in sessions to get through this piece with you but it’s worth every moment and thank you for heaven knows the number of coffees I have had, bless you and wish you all the best in your future endeavors as we look forward to another milestone in the life of The French Connection.

Syed Rahat Ali Shah Our special feature is on a young photographer, who specializes in bridal, fashion, portraits portfolios & event photography. Syed Rahat Ali Shah is a regular at events in the South West though based in Birmingham. After making contacts on the net with our team I got to meet Rahat at the Bristol Fashion Festival held at The Hilton Bradley Stoke. In the little time between events we were able to talk to Rahat.
Q.Give us a brief about yourself. R. I belong to an art family my late grand uncle was the first set designer in the Pakistan film Industry, together with my late father they set up a set designing and art direction company in LahorePakistan, in 1970. My uncles were also photographers, they both passed on so I am the only member of our family still pursuing this family tradition. This has given me an incentive to strive and achieve my goal of my creativity so as to promote any upcoming talent. This is one of the main reasons why I am in such events. Q: When did all begin? R: My experience in this field extends over 10 years during which I have successfully handled a variety of projects that have produced spectacular outcomes with work on the digital and adobe equipment. I am also familiar with photo shop, adobe illustrator, fashion coordination, modeling, model making and nature photography. Much of my professional experience relates to projects on prestigious assignments in Doha, Qatar and Dubai. Q: Looking at some of your work, its stunning, what makes your photography tick? R: I am a Visualizer.I enhance the hidden features of a model with my style and quality of work. I always aim to present new & attractive concepts specialising in colour blend and expressions. Photography is an art, like music & drama; you have to have an artistic mind to come up with mind-blowing creations. Q: Besides catwalk photography & portraits that you seem to be concentrating on today what else do you do? R: I have done magazine covers, sign boards, ramp shows, fashion shoots for magazine, and in fact I am more into fashion & graphic photography than modeling and portraits. Q: Growing up, did you ever imagine you would follow family traditions of photography. R: Yes I did and it’s a dream come true. Q: I see you have come all the way from Birmingham and at 3am after a long close to 18 hour session you are still fresh and ready to go on. R: I am an industrious individual who has the ability to prioritize my work to meet client needs and ensure that I can achieve the best results. I am a good team player and can also work independently when necessary in order to meet deadlines on time, so for me going working this late is important as it gives me a head start over others in this competitive field. Q: This is a very competitive field and one has to kind of be really pushy to survive in this trade, qualities I do not see in you, how do you survive in this mad media world? R: I am a patient individual with good listening skills and handles assignments in a polite, sensitive and professional manner. If necessary I am always willing to accept further development and training to continually enhance my skills and this has helped me survive in this so-called mad media industry. Q: What are your future plans? R: I want to work hard & be a very good creative photographer. I would like to someday have a photography academy to help others. Q: What word of advice can you give young aspiring photographers? R: Photography is an exciting creative field, it will give you an opportunity to create and take pictures you never imagined you could and above all you will meet people of all walks of life, so go for it.

Supporting the community Bristol Children’s Home Trust Bristol Children’s Home Trust was established on August 22nd 2006. It is the only institution of its class between Rawalpindi and Lahore, providing all the necessities of life for orphans. The home is a reform oriented welfare organization of moderate and broad minded whose main aim is to provide shelter, food and education for those in dire need, without indulging in political, sectarian and regional prejudices and extremism. Its focus is the promotion of social welfare programmes, educational facilities, Islamic values and cultural traditions. The home is the brainchild of Naheed and Shabbir Hussein, local business entrepreneur that run Lickin Chicken franchise in Bristol. The dream of setting up a children’s home was born as the couple established their business, they set aside funds to assist widows in Pakistan. The two decided to build a home so as to give education and knowhow to the orphans so they too are equipped to assist their local communities. The need to establish a home became a reality after the 2005 Pakistan Earthquake in which we saw thousands suffering as the news and picture were flashed across screen worldwide. They had saved up close to £4000.00 then and as the appeal was broadcast on the local Radio Ramadhan Station, Naheed was the first person to call the studio and make her pledge of £4000 and her 9 year old son Haider had saved close to £1019 and the two went to the station and made a donation of £5019 towards the Pakistan Relief Appeal. The desire to build on a piece of land that the family had was burning now after this tragic disaster, funds were being set aside from the business and construction started with thoughts only of the affected and their well-being. This went on for a year with funds from their local business. In 12 months the construction was complete and took in the first group, these were three brothers who were orphaned by tragedies. Solely dependent on funds from the family business they increased the intake. The home started getting a lot of requests for taking children, a board was set up to assess each indivual case before admittance, to date the Home house 22 children, all boys. The children are all uniformed and looked after as a family under the care of an administrator and carer.

Once in operation they approached friends and business colleagues to assist. The first external donor was former Bristol City Council Councillor and local business man Abdul Raoof Malik of Pak Butchers,£1000,others being Arif Khan of Brunel Associates, £1500, South West Mini Buses pledge a £100 a month, Kashif of Cardiff, Hamza Poultry, Nisar of Big Savers, Javed of Lickin' Chicken', Anwar Mehmood all have a monthly sponsorship of £50. The team organizes various events in Bristol to raise funds and are currently looking to have more sponsors come on board so as to take in a further 15 children. All the children at the Home are educated in English schools, given private after school tuition classes at the home, taught Islamic knowledge and values and some of the children are now undertaking to memorize the Quran, a feat that very few in the Islamic world are able to achieve. Celebrity Bursts! DAZZLING RAI: BABY WEIGHT OR NOT AISHWARYA DAZZLES IN CANNES! Baby weight or not, the Bollywood actress, 38, looked every inch the Bollywood beauty in a gold embroidered sari and co-coordinating tailored jacket with Mandarin collar in Cannes. Its action time for Bollywood. RGV is back with Department starring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt and Rana Daggubati. The character Sarjeroa played by Mr. Bachchan represents a Machiavellian character.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan lived up to her title of 'the world's most beautiful woman' at the AmfAR gala at Cannes last night, just a week after critics slated her for not losing her baby weight fast enough The former Miss World, who is married to Abhishek Bachchan, the son of one of India's best-loved stars, gave birth to her first child, a daughter, in November last year. She found international fame in the Hollywood film Bride and Prejudice, and Julia Roberts billed her as the world's most beautiful woman. She may have been criticised in her native India for not losing her baby weight fast enough, but Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looked nothing short of dazzling at the AmfAR Cinema Against Aids gala in Cannes on My 25th.Indeed, if last night's appearance at Cannes is anything to go by, she has little to worry about. Nor is she short of support in her goal to prioritize her new daughter because she is 'The most beautiful woman in the world' The former Miss World has been lambasted following the publication of an unflattering photo, with critics suggesting that she should have already lost her baby weight.
A MOMENT OF PRIDE FOR BRAND ENGLAND-
DAVID BECKHAM
How many other sports icons get such a reception at the White House eclipsing Mr. President? I guess the whole wide world looks at David as our brand ambassador save for many of us who are British. The LA Galaxy skipper had his team the LA Galaxy was shown around the White House to congratulate them for winning the Major League Soccer Championship last season. Mr. Obama 50, and facing an election year, jokingly said, “‘He is tough. It is rare a man can be that tough on the field and also have his own line of underwear’.
GANGS OF WASSEYPUR-O WOMANIYA
SHOLAY 3D WILL BE A SUCCESS
Set for release in 3D on Independence Day this year, 37 years after its first run in cinema halls on the same day, Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay a 1975 blockbuster may bring its estranged scriptwriters, Salim Khan & Javed Akhtar together once again. Merchandising of popular characters Veeru & Gabbar will be part of the promotions preceding the August 15th release. The distributors expect the film to be released across 1000 screens in India & abroad.
Bizarre as it may sound, the latest song of Gangs of Wasseypur is called O Womaniya. The song, set in a rural setting, is both raw and rustic and rather comic. The music for Gangs of Wasseypur has been composed by Oye Lucky Lucky Oye music director Sneha Khanwalkar. The composer is known for making music from natural environment sounds. Gangs of Wasseypur was not only screened at the Cannes film festival but was also the longest-running entry at the fest. The film is a hard-hitting and graphic story about three generations of coal and scrap-trade mafia gangs in eastern India, obsessed with Hindi cinema. The film stars Piyush Mishra, Manoj Bajpai, Reema Sen and Tigmanshu Dhulia and is scheduled to release in India on June 22.

Africa’s Biggest Wildlife Spectacle!
WILDEBEEST MIGRATION IN THE LAND OF BIG GAME SAFARI-KENYA
Like eternity, the staccato of millions of hoof-beats goes on and on. Adrenaline levels are high and everything seems to be a rush against time. With all verbal communication seemingly waning off the thumping and galloping fill the air as millions of trooping wildebeest moving in an amazingly clockwise patterned motion are only concerned with one thing; crossing the great Mara river unscathed. Welcome the endless plains of east Africa that are the setting for this world’s greatest wildlife spectacle where over 1.5 million wildebeest accompanied by 191,000 elegant Zebras and witty Thomson’s Gazelles and thousands of Elands make a dash across the Mara in search of greener pasture. This spectacle takes place at a background of the vast champagne coloured hills of Kenya’s Masaai Mara stretching to the Serengeti plains a region relentlessly tracked by Africa’s great predators, prowling on the pilgrims who have to trek and cover well over 2898 kilometres each year in search of rain ripened grass. It is a migration of such complexity, scale, and marvel that even the great caribou in Canada's Arctic pale by comparison. Everything from the smallest and the most fragile to the largest soaring predators such as the lion king of the jungle paw and hoof their way.
This great wildebeest migration is regarded as one of the world's greatest natural wonder and the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet that is the single most breathtaking event in the animal kingdom. The ungulates follow an annual circular route around this entire ecosystem in an endless quest for fresh pastures and water. Usually the rumbling hooves of the wildebeest and the clouds of red dust they leave behind have become a symbol as well as a strong migratory instinct that defies crocodileinfested rivers, wild currents, and flocks of predators lying in wait.
Dating back to the early 1960s, this event begins with the calving season that is remarkably synchronized usually taking place between the months of January to March. This period is characterised by plenty of rain ripened grass available.
The ungulates running to save their precious life while on land and in water when crossing the waters of the Mara River that are ruled by the huge crocodiles brandishing razor sharp teeth, extremely strong jaws and a powerful tail that could send of a gazelle into a stupor. Adding pathos and drama to this breath taking event, a constellation of predators paw their way hoping to make a meal of the mass motion while a lioness stealthily follows after the heard in readiness to catch a meal for her cabs that are also eagerly honing their hunting skills chasing after the rather weak, famished and thirsty calves of the grazers. This great wildebeest migration is regarded as one of the world's greatest natural wonder and the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet that is the single most breathtaking event in the animal kingdom.
An estimated 500,000 calves are born during this time. Interestingly, the Wildebeest society is much more structured at this time. Groupings of pregnant cows, cows that have calved, groups of yearlings recently separated from their mothers and bachelor herds, which are usually excluded by the territorial bulls from the calving grounds, are seen. March to May the herds begin to sweep west and north towards the long grass plains and woodlands of the Serengeti's western corridor. Here the herd divides when some swing further west than others who head northwest to later meet again in the Masaai Mara. At this time, the long rains have started and the southern grass plains they leave behind are depleted of all food, so the herds must press on. Between June and July, the herd final push towards further north results in a massing along the banks of the swollen Mara River, producing one of the worlds truly most spectacular sights.

Kenyans don’t have to be taught the art of hospitality - they just carry on as usual.
At this time, the trekking has taken four months and the animals are in desperate need of water to drink and grass to graze. At this point many young ones die of exhaustion and thirst before reaching the Mara River. However many survive just only to find one huge obstacle on their way; swimming across the swelling crocodile infested Mara River.
Between July and October the wildebeest reside in the Masaai Mara, grazing the lush green grasses that the earlier rains encouraged. The mass of over two million animals cover the savannah and grasslands as far as the eye can see. Predation by leopard, lion and hyena at this time is great simply due to numbers. There are just so many prey animals around that the predators have to take advantage to feed their own young, a time of plenty for all. October to November is when the short rains begin to fall in the south and east Serengeti, so the herds start to leave the Masaai Mara, crossing the Mara River yet again, bringing all the same perils as before. They head slowly back to the Serengeti's eastern plains. By the time they arrive it will be February and the cycle is complete. Arrival at the calving grounds marks the end of this, and the start of the next year’s migration. In all 250,000 wildebeest die during this 12898 kilometre journey, the sick, the lame, old and very young, but the next calving will produce around 500,000 new calves who must take their chances along with the adults on the following 'Great Migration'. The land of this ‘Greatest Show on Earth’-Kenya Home to soaring plains, legendary Masaai Mara, secret coastal idylls and exotic colonial hideaways, Kenya is much more than a byword for the world’s greatest safari. Kenyans don’t have to be taught the art of hospitality - they just carry on as usual.
And with forty-two tribes comprising the colourful native blend it’s unique, magical and friendly people Kenya is also packed with surprises. Whether it’s a chance sighting of big game only fifteen minutes from the capital of Nairobi, or a thrillingly diverse cuisine which marries African, Arabic and Indian influences, there’s something to delight every visitor.
Kenyans are ready to welcome you to their land. Choosing Kenya holiday destinations Samburu’s endless blue skies beautifully contrast with the dust-red plains dotted with palm-fringed rivers provides the ultimate tranquil holiday getaway into the wild promising relaxation and a sure retreat from the hustle bustle of life. The journey to the Samburu is striking as it is awing. To get here you will cross the equator at Nanyuki and go to the northern hemisphere by passing the snow capped Mt. Kenya lying a strand the equator line and huge blue mountains serve as a back drop to this game reserve. The environment here is indeed enchanting. Elephant Bedroom tented camp nestled amidst the acacia groves along the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River and snugly shaded under the gargantuan branches of the acacia trees is a refreshingly modern camp, renowned for the luxurious beauty of its foreground landscape and the serene tranquility of its setting.
Elephants have developed a love for this camp and hence the name. They call in during the day and predominantly at night where they will keep you company as your snooze off thanks to the fact that their habitat has not been interfered with. The building of the bush camp has ensured that tourists keep as close to nature as possible and there is hardly any stone or concrete material used in erecting the 100 percent canvas tents. The guest tents measuring approximately 50sq. metres are furnished to offer luxurious comfort with a king size bed or two queen size beds, a dresser and lounging chair all made from distressed rose wood in classy African design. The river is the lifeline and nerve centre of this reserve. A game drive up and down along the wooded river banks opens one to a rich vegetation that effortless derive their life from the crocodile filled reaches of the river that is also home to a horde of other living creatures. Samburu National Reserve is endowed with vast flora and fauna and provides the perfect yet ideal features that make it right for the habitation of the sought after ‘big five’. The vast open grassland is lion-stalked and camouflage the ever ready to pounce king of the jungle where he comfortably scouts for a day’s meal while lazily ruling the plains.

Junior DJ Extra Ordinaire Junior has been an inspiration to many in the Ethnic Asian community. He was instrumental in training members of the Muslim community for the launch of the 1st Islamic Radio in the South West & South Wales; and Mast Mast FM which was later christened Radio Mast. Junior’s interest in Radio started at a very young age, accompanying his father to the National Broadcast Station. At the age of 9, Junior enrolled for music lessons playing the Saxophone, an instrument he cherishes and holds close to his heart. His first taste of the entertainment industry was when he accompanied his father to an award presentation evening celebrating the 1998 FIFA World Cup. He spent much time during school holidays and weekends assisting his dad, a celebrity Radio presenter on Kenya Broadcasting English Service on the Breakfast Show. He assisted in organizing the playlist as he was not given much to do On Air. This did not go down well with his mother who believed that he was too young for such a show as it had an early start, 4am for a 5am live transmission. Despite this reluctance his dad had a different story for his young son who showed a lot of talent at a young age, this was to groom him into top Radio presenter. Fate would have it as one morning his father who had travelled to another city for a performance was delayed on the motorway, this meant Junior had no alternative but to go “On Air” and kick start the Breakfast Show assisted by his elder sister who was then programme producer.
Presenting Breakfast Show on KBC Radio, Nairobi, Kenya.
Presenting Breakfast Show on Comm. FM, Bristol, seen with programme guest, Allan Parris.
Junior has been instrumental in setting up Radio Mast FM and was the one person who trained all new recruits that were given an opportunity to learn the art of Radio Broadcasting and presentation. It is important to note that none of the presenters that broadcast had any Radio or public speaking experience and I believe they all owe it to Junior’s expertise and patience in training the broadcasts wannabes.
He was an instant liking of the younger audience. Soon he featured more prominently on the Show and started getting invites for appearances. In 2004 he once again teamed up with his father to present the weekend Breakfast special for a community Radio, Comm. FM in Bristol. This was the first time he worked with a local community as at the main stream Radio Station he never got close to the local communities and at appearances he was quickly whisked out of venues after performances by his protective parents. This inspired him to join his dad and a young Sheikh to launch Radio Ramadhan Bristol, the 1st Islamic Radio in the South West & South Wales. Radio Ramadhan was an instant hit, informing, educating and entertaining the community with a difference, as Junior puts it, “The difference is that we are different from all the other Radio Ramadhans in the UK as we are diverse in our programming yet appealing to all communities and faiths.”

On The
Red Carpet
…and here come the fishtails on the Red Carpet at the world’s biggest fashion photo-opportunity, only the most showstopping, eye-popping glamour will do the Cannes film Festival, and this year some A-Listers took their inspiration from the sea. Showing off dresses featuring dramatic fishtail silhouette-figure hugging around the bodice, waist & hips and flared at the bottom from the knee, topped up with a flowing train. Jane Fonda, showing timeless elegance, may be 74, but she looks decades younger in her shimmering Atelier Versace bronze gown, which shows off her tiny waist.
Mermaid-style dresses, which were at their peak of popularity during the Hollywood golden era, began making a comeback at the Golden Globes in January, when a host of actresses including Reese Witherspoon and Rooney Mara turned up wearing the shape. During the 50’s it became the design that starleys including jayne mansfield and marilyn monroe chose when they wanted to showcase their curves with maximum impact. The mermaid style is a look wich oozes old-school glamour, and its comeback reflects the recent resurgence in demand for fashion which celebrates womn’s bodies. One will also want to take a glimpse at the ‘Leg Craze’ that Angelina Jolie brought to the Oscars. Bristol had its Red Carpet moments as seen in pictures on the left & right at Bristol Fashion Festival held at Hilton Bradley Stoke.
